A vital ingredient in ensuring that metals exploration companies, working in the developing countries of the Pacific Rim, support the development of national geologists is making such a learning program cost-effective. There is a wide spectrum of learning needed in the development of these explorationists: the technical and conceptual skills to carry out exploration efficiently, the professional and managerial skills to apply the exploration in the work situation, the personal attributes required to manage their exploration effectively, and a company organisation that allows them to learn and use these skills and attributes.

The Australian Centre for Minesite Rehabilitation Research (ACMRR) was established through a mining industry initiative to meet the need of industry, governments and the community for sustainable systems for land affected by exploration, mining and mineral processing activities. The Centre, which is a consortium of the major groups associated with mining rehabilitation research in Australia, has a focus on both strategic research and technology transfer and combines a wide range of multidisciplinary skills covering engineering and the physical and biological sciences. The paper briefly describes the goals, structure, expertise and research and technology transfer activities of the Centre. The major research program areas of waste rock dump and final void stability, acid mine drainage, tailings disposal, and remediation of ecosystem reconstruction are described in the context of national Priorities.

The company was formed in 1926 to exploit tin bearing veins adjacent to Aberfoyle Creek in north-east Tasmania. In 1928 a 923ft tunnel was driven to explore and develop the mine 150ft below surface. This put the company on a path to become Australia's second largest tin producer by the late 1960's. Recently, Aberfoyle Resources Limited completed a 1.1km tunnel to access the major Hellyer zinc, silver, lead orebody at 300m depth. Production at 1 million tonnes a year is likely, and will make the company a significant world supplier of zinc by the late 1980's. The intervening 20 year history of survival and diversification illustrates principles of mineral exploration which proved valid in the Australian context. The objective of exploration should be to develop mines which can survive rigorous competition and downturns in commodity prices. Such mines will be based on orebodies with many of the following characteristics described by Richards (1986).

Modern, research-based approaches to mineral exploration are essential to the future maintenance of the mineral industry. These need to fully utilise the rapidly expanding growth of understanding of the evolution of the earth's crust, and be properly integrated with advances in understanding of chemical and physical processes involved in ore formation. BMR has a major role to play in supporting the growth and utilisation of this research base, as well as maintaining the national geological and geophysical bases which are essential both to tactical and strategic interests of Australia and of its mineral industry. The objective development of data-process modelling is one target of such strategic research based on a more integrated approach to research by BMR, mineral companies, CSIRO and the universities with emphasis given to promoting positive feedback during research activities. Examples of the success of strategic research in Australia and overseas are noted in the Text.

Due to geographical location, AustraliaÆs economy and trading are closely related to Asia. With ChinaÆs increasing demand on resources and energy and Japan and KoreaÆs steady imports in these fields, AustraliaÆs mining industry is experiencing a so called æboomÆ period. Traditionally, engineers or skilled workers from South Africa, Britian or other parts of Europe moved to Australia for its mining industry. Now, more students from Asia are starting to choose mining engineering (similar choices include mining geology, metallurgy, geotechnical engineering and mining surveying) and expect to work in these fields. How does AustraliaÆs mining industry face such a situation? What kinds of challenges and opportunities do the mining industry and universities face? How do mining companies utilise these human resources? This paper concludes with an analysis of all these questions at an industrial level and some personal deduction as to the preferred course for international students.

Iron-reducing bacteria are able to couple the oxidation of an electron donor to the reduction of Fe(III) to Fe(II) under anaerobic conditions in the generation of cellular energy. Recent evidence suggests that these bacteria are phylogenetically diverse and widely distributed in nature. Our laboratory has isolated thermophilic, thermotolerant and mesophilic iron-reducing bacteria from numerous petroleum reservoirs with varying conditions, groundwaters of the Great Artesian Basin (GAB), and petroleum-contaminated soils. Some of these isolates have been identified as novel species and from genera such as Deferribacter, Bacillus, Alkaliphilus, Clostridium and Thermoanaerobacter. Further investigations have shown that these bacteria are metabolically diverse, not only capable of reducing different metal species but also able to use a range of organic compounds, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, for growth. Due to their abundance and metabolic capabilities, it is possible that iron-reducing bacteria may be important in microbially-enhanced oil recovery processes and in the bioremediation of contaminated soils and aquifers, particularly in anaerobic zones.

In this paper the reactions which may lead to particle hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity as a function of grinding environment-are reviewed. The results of pulp chemical investigations related to a Cu-Pb-Zn ore on a pilot plant scale and laboratory tests with a Pb-Zn ore to evaluate the effect of some inhibitors on grinding/flotation are presented. The flotation recoveries of the ores treated by conventional and autogenous grinding methods show only a marginal difference and the results favour autogenous grinding. Iron originating from several sources manifests in the form of insoluble hydroxy complexes in the pulps. Such metal hydroxy complexes are hydrophilic and coat the mineral surfaces indiscriminately. On the other hand, selectivity is a problem for pulps ground by autogenous milling. Some corrosion inhibitors used in the laboratory grinding/flotation tests on a Pb-Zn ore showed maximum reduction in the wear of the grinding media ranging from 25 - 36 per cent, depending on the type and concentration of the inhibitor.

Examination of wastes aimed at evaluation of their usefulness for utilisation needs applying modern chemical testing methods. The XRD-XRF-ICP-GC/MS set of test methods constitutes an integrated testing system enabling ecochemical examination of wastes. As far as the problem of time-consuming operations is concerned, the offered system fits in a market-oriented field of activity of accredited chemical laboratories. Within a reasonable period of time, it allows to obtain information about mineralogical and chemical properties of wastes. It provides full range of information beginning from mineral composition (XRD) through chemical composition including the number of elements and organic compounds (XRF-ICP-GC/MS) up to the contents relating to the amounts of ingredients, both organic and inorganic in the leaching tests (ICP-GC/MS). The XRD-XRF-ICP-GC/MS testing system proves to be of particular importance in obtaining reliable results enabling to perform precise assessment (from ecochemical point of view) of wastes to evaluate their usefulness for utilisation in building materials, in civil engineering and reclamation works.

The Nagambie heap leach gold mine commenced production of gold in September, 1989. The mine,120km north of Melbourne in Victoria, Australia, was developed by Perseverance Mining Cor- poration Ltd, a junior Australian mining company, with no other operating mines. Gold production to December 31, 1990 was 47,621 oz. The mine is now producing at the rate of about 45,000 oz per year. As of February 28, 1991, resources at the mine are 5.1 million tonnes measured, at 0.65g/t Au while reserves were 1.65 million tonnes at 0.86g/t Au of proven, heap leach ore, plus 0.37 million tonnes at 0.40g/t Au, of dump leach ore. Metallurgical recoveries expected are 80 per cent for the heap ore and 60 per cent for the dump ore. Perseverance Mining Corporation was listed on the Australian Stock Exchange on April 2, 1987, after a capital raising in March that year. At this time the company's issued capital was 4 million ordinary 25ó shares, 3 million of which were issued to the public to raise $0.75 million.

Bridging of production stopes in narrow vein gold deposits contributes to significant financial losses and production delays. Bridging is caused when underbreak in the stope production blast occurs, resulting in less than the designed stope blast volume breaking out during blasting. Jundee Operations in the Northern Goldfields of Western Australia extracts ore from its expansive narrow vein orebodies utilising longhole open stoping. In 2006 it experienced bridging in ten panels, or 8.77 per cent of all panels, as well as multiple bridging in 30 per cent of these bridged panels. The Jundee orebodies are west dipping with the bridged panels dipping between 44¦ and 62¦. This paper examines some solutions from the drill and blast design perspective to minimise bridging occurrences. It was found that the then current drill patterns and number of holes were adequate from a longhole stope design perspective. However, changes to the blasting design, specifically modifications to the blast delay initiation sequencing, primer positioning and blasthole dump combined with timely stope surveying and back analysis, were implemented with the aim of preventing bridging in this narrow vein operation.

Improvements in electron optics, field emission gun design, and X-ray detector technology have led to the development of a new class of microanalysis tools. By combining multiple wavelength dispersive (WD) spectrometers, spectral energy dispersive (ED) spectrometers and cathodoluminescence (CL) data sets, a wealth of information can be collected during routine electron beam mapping and analysis. In this paper, data collection on a field emission electron microprobe equipped with five wavelength dispersive, two silicon drift energy dispersive X-ray spectrometers and a wavelength dispersive linear array optical spectrometer has been automated with the optical, electron and X-ray signals being collected in parallel. To analyse the large hyperspectral data sets we have implemented an autoclustering strategy that can be used to produce a quantitative chemical phase map. The cathodoluminescence spectra can be deconvoluted to produce peak intensity maps, which are then converted into elemental speciation images with quantitative sensitivity down to parts per million levels. Both methods are illustrated using typical mineral processing examples, firstly a Ni-laterite sample is investigated with the fine-scale distribution of Ni examined in detail. Secondly, a scheelite sample with rare earth zoning in mapped and rare earth levels quantified.

A sustained eight-year major research effort has been undertaken in South Africa to develop integrated passive water treatment systems for the sustainable removal of sulfates, while simultaneously addressing the removal of metals and acidity. The research effort addressed the problem both at a fundamental science level and at the more empirical pilot plant level. Whereas there are numerous anaerobic sulfate reducing reactors in operation on mine waters that remove some sulfate together with metals and acidity, these are typically plagued by low sulfate removal efficiency and gradual reductions in overall reactor efficiency with time. The South African research effort has focused on understanding the fundamental microbiological and biochemical reactions that occur in anaerobic reactors filled with lignocellulosic material and subjected to high sulfate water. Hypotheses have been developed that differentiate the reactions occurring in such a reactor into groups that should be individually optimised and these hypotheses have been verified through rigorous laboratory and pilot scale studies. The results of this research are incorporated into a patented multi-stage integrated passive treatment system that is capable of sustained high rate removal of sulfates, metals and acidity.

INTRODUCTIONDuring the past few years there has been considerable interest in developing the so-called direct reduction processes for treating iron oxides. The various methods proposed were recently reviewed by Scortecci and Palazzi (1960).In particular the application of fluidized bed techniques received considerable attention and, on first examination, this seems to be the ideal method 'of dealing with fine iron oxides. Several difficulties (e.g. product agglomeration) require the method to be investigated further before its potentialities can be fully assessed.PROPOSED FLUIDIZED BED REDUCTION PROCESSESBrassert and De Jahn (1951) were among the earliest to suggest the use of fluidized beds for the reduction of iron ore to metallic iron. Their patent was followed by many others proposing similar concepts, mainly from Lewis (1955), Ogorzaly (19.56), Shipley (1956), Agarwal (1960'), Osborn (1958), Texaco Development Corporation (1956) and Stelling (1957).The H-iron process (Squires and J ohnson, 1957; Lubker and Bruland, 1960) is the only scheme that has been an economic success. Cyanidation tests by bottle agitation were conducted on an oxidized lead-silver ore containing approximately 12% Pb and 500 g/t Ag. Over 60% of the silver was leached when the ore was ground to 100% passing 0.15mm, whereas 50-60% of the silver was leached when the ore was only ground to 100% passing 0.5mm. Slurry handling and dewatering at the fine grind size were very difficult due to the high clay content of the ore, however this problem was greatly reduced at the coar- ser grind size. The silver recovery at the fine grind size was very dependent on cyanide solution strength with stronger cyanide sol- utions (containing more than 0.1% NaCN) re- sulting in lower solution silver contents. This was thought to be due to the precipi- tation of leached silver by zinc, which was also leached from the ore by the higher cyanide levels. There was a critical zinc level in solution of approximately 1000ppm, above which the silver recovery fell markedly. Cyanide and lime consumptions for this ore were high (typically 5 kg/t and 40 kg/t respectively), hence the processing of this particular ore by cyanide leaching is un- economic at current silver prices.

This subject of paramount importance in many modern plants employed in the extraction of gold from ores by cyanidation, involves several considerations.With the old-type "slimes decantation" process, using several tanks of large dimension, installed at high capital cost, it was frequently possible to obtain good settlement over a protracted period, but the disability of indifferent response to subsequent filtration and washing of the residual pulp, after decantation of the supernatant pregnant solution, was often present.In modern cyanidation practice, the tendency is to reduce capital expenditure by continuous processing of the ore pulp in a plant of less volume, but capable of handling more tonnage through-put and yielding, coincidently, less residual dissolved gold in the final pulp residues.INHIBITORY FACTORS.These involve a study of the effect of the circuit water or solution employed in milling and treatment, the amount of "primary" slime occurring in the ore broken underground, the constitution of the "walls" underground, the inherent occurrence of colloidal slime in partially decomposed ore, and the presence of kaolinised and ferruginous clayey structures carrying payable infiltrations of gold values, to mention some of the troubles encountered in practice. Aquatic macroinvertebrates have been used as a monitoring tool for many years. They are ubiquitous and occupy a central role in the ecology of rivers. They are a key link in the aquatic food chain, forming a pathway between primary producers (such as algae and macrophytes) and predators (such as fish, platypus and birds), and some are sensitive to flow conditions, water quality and habitat condition. They are not very mobile and are good indicators of local impacts. As most aquatic macroinvertebrates are benthic, they are better able to integrate effects of changes in water quality, and habitat condition and structure. Their diversity is crucial to the maintenance of a balanced, functioning and healthy river ecosystem. Thus, data on benthic macroinvertebrate community structures can be used for predicting potential impact, assessing the extent of damage and for gauging recovery from damage. Over the past eight years, State agencies throughout Australia, through the National River Health Program have developed models (AusRivAS) to assess river health using macroinvertebrate communities. The Queensland Department of Natural Resources and Mines has sampled both macroinvertebrates and water quality throughout Queensland, including areas affected by mine discharges. This paper will assess results obtained from sampling in the Mt Morgan area to illustrate the usefulness of this method of river health assessment.

THE SPREAD OF PAPERS HAS BEEN 15 PERCENT EACH ON GEOLOGY AND THE MINERAL RESOURCES, WITH 25 PERCENT ON LAND USE AND ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS. In order to correctly predict the performance of beneficiation processes, such as hydrocycloning or ultrasonic treatment of iron ore fines, it is important to understand possible changes in size distribution, mineral composition and textural peculiarities. During beneficiation processes, iron ore can be subjected to various physical actions which may result in changes in size distribution. In the case of soft or friable ores, attritioning and/or deagglomeration may have a significant effect on both separation performance and product stream specifications. Optical image analysis tools, which give statistical information on a particle by particle basis, can help in better understanding the response of the ores to these processes. An experimental study has been conducted to investigate the response of a haematitic-goethitic iron ore to a combination of stirring and ultrasonic treatment. The effect of stirring and ultrasonic treatment on the size and mineral distribution has been quantified using image analysis and automatic ore texture classification. This approach has been applied to several size coarse fractions of the initial feed and product. The results show that, following treatment, the mass proportion of ore texture classes which contained higher amounts of ochreous goethite and kaolinite had significantly decreased compared with that in the feed, while the proportion of texture classes where haematite was the major mineral had increased. Liberation analysis also showed a significant increase in the proportion of particles with more than 95 per cent haematite and vitreous goethite.

"In project evaluation there are two matters of keen interest to non-executive directors: the process by which an investment recommendation is reached, as well as the investment itself, as presented. It is sometimes mistakenly believed that Boards of directors are interested only in the result. That is not so. The process by which project evaluations are derived and socialised with the Board is as important as the result, sometimes more so.Setting aside the gloomy predictions of the doomsayers and looking through short-term volatility in supply and demand, the overall availability of mineral resources more often than not exceeds demand. There are in reality more development projects in prospect at any one time than are needed to meet the market. Only the fittest will prosper, although some others may survive.Optimism springs eternal in the mining industry and every project promoter, executive or entrepreneur has a convincing project development case. Some will create value for shareholders, but the historical evidence suggests that many will fail to meet the expectations set in their evaluation.Boards of directors make the final decision to invest, or not, in a new mine. Knowledge is power, and on that basis the balance of power favours management. Management has the facts (or in some cases, what passes for fact) and the passion to invest. The non-executives have the power of approval – yes or no – but before making a decision directors must demonstrate due diligence, the essential precursor to project approval.Management has a vital part to play in facilitating that due diligence process and in encouraging the independent thought processes of the Board. A closed approach by management fosters a negative, risk-averse attitude on the part of the Board. One that encourages an understanding of the rigour of the project evaluation process and the robustness of the result will allow directors to understand better the implications of their decision.CITATION:Knight, R, 2016. To the south and west of Broken Hill lies the Thackaringa silver-lead district, about 25 miles, and is the locality really of the first silver find in the country long before Broken Hill, the geological fomations of which it much resembles. The Iocks and their structure are identical, except that in this area they are  more irregularly foliated and apparently much more faulted and expose in places quick successions of complete anticlines and synclines, even in a single lease. Saddles of ore respectively are found coinciding with the flexures of the rock but many minor veins otherwise and branches exist and make connections which render the whole a mining problem. It follows then that the surface.of the ground after some denudation in dotted with croppings of all the series, and in such a confusing way that the actual strike of a vein may be even confounded with the dip and readily mistaken for it at a few places. The main character of the outcrops are those usual in the district consisting almost wholly of argentiferous and silicious ironstone, sometimes gossan, which at a depth in a few feet changes to a gangue of very silicious carbonate of iron (crystallised), which occurrence is uniform through this district.The exploration of the lodes has not been extensive as it has not been well understood. Shallow shafts and drives have comprised nearly all the mining at present, which is evident on first sight by the numerous shafts and small excavations dotted 'about, as in an alluvial field. The depth of exploration underground in one place had gone several hundreds of feet, never more than 150 feet vertical from the surface in depth and irregular. The undulations of the most continuous work in this direction is such that it presents at different places successively either a tunnel, shaft, underlay winze, level, or Tise, and is on ore all the time, and where the rocks are faulted (which occurs as much as 30 feet and more) these changes are very abrupt, but for working on are suitably connected by the management.
