Industry-sponsored research at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre has produced models of high tension roll and electrostatic plate separators operating in mineral sands dry plants. The behaviour of mineral species has been characterised under a wide variety of operating conditions by extensive plant machine sampling and laboratory measurements. The effect of operating conditions on separator performance has been quantified by monitoring changes in the weight distribution of mineral species along the product splitter axis. The response of each mineral species has been modelled on a size-by-size basis using an average surface charge decay time and a variation in its surface properties. The models incorporate changes in machine, mineral and ambient conditions on the separation and predict all product flows, assays and size distributions. This paper outlines the structure of the models. These models are being implemented in JKSimSand, an user-friendly simulation software Package.

The application of conventional dust control systems in British Coal mines has considerably reduced the incidence of pneumoconiosis. A number of new techniques have been developed involving extraction close to the cutting heads of mining machines which will be capable of controlling airborne dust with the greater intensity of production necessary in the present economic climate.

Three cross sections, 200 m apart, display the distribution of indicator hydrothermal minerals across the Empire zone of the Golden Cross epithermal Au-Ag deposit, Waihi, New Zealand. These minerals are used to interpret the temperature and composition of hydrothermal fluids. The distribution of interstratified illite-montmorillonite and illite indicate that temperatures ranged from 140 to >220¦C, with temperatures above 220¦C predominating. The mineral assemblage of quartz-adularia-chlorite-illite-calcite-pyrite envelops the Empire vein system and stockwork, and reflects formation from an alkali chloride water whereas the mineral assemblage of replacement calcite-interstratified illite û montmorillonite-kaolinite forms a carapace and reflects formation from a CO2-rich steam-heated water. Alkali chloride waters appear responsible for the epithermal Au-Ag mineralisation.

Pellets were produced from carefully sized iron ore and silica sand fractions, under controlled moisture conditions, using a sealed balling drum. The strength of these pellets was measured as a function of moisture content and particle size. The results showed that the strength of the pellets could be adequately described by a model which equates the strength of the pellets with the negative pressure developed within the porous mass, provided that the particle size distribution was narrow and the mean particle size relatively large. The Pleistocene basanite-tephrite Rothenberg cone complex was built by an alter- nation of strombolian and phreatomagmatic phases of explosive eruption. Two main centres, on a one km long NNE-trending fissure, were active during its construction. The strombolian deposits from three discrete facies corresponding to the crater-fill and inner wall and outer wall environments on the cone. The outer wall facies consists of an alternation of 1. 'normal' coarse-grained, relatively well- sorted lapilli and bomb beds, and 2. finer-grained poorly-sorted lapilli beds. Evidence suggests that the former was pro- duced by open-vent lava fountaining, with balanced magma supply and discharge rates, and the latter are the products of eruptions during partial blockage of the vent, by collapse of wall-rock, and formation of a degassed crust on the magma. The resulting explosions there- fore ejected a mixture of fresh actively ves- iculating magma, older partially degassed lava and material recycled from the wall of the cones. The phreatomagmatic deposits are an alternation of moderately-sorted fall beds and thinner ash-rich pyroclastic surge and rain-flushed units. The clast populations are much more diverse than strombolian ones, including abundant wall rock fragments from 0-100 m depth. The juvenile (magmatic) particles range from highly vesicular scoria to dense 'bread-crusted' clasts, and contain abundant small wall rock inclusions. The phreatomagmatic phases are products of explosive interaction of small batches of magma with shallow groundwater. Vesiculation of this magma played a small but significant role throughout the fragmentation.

The feed preparation section of the Whyalla iron ore pellet plant includes a screening and crushing plant followed by dry grinding mills. Improvements in the efficiency of the vibrating screen and cone crusher have enabled screening plant throughput to be increased and product size to be decreased. This, in turn, has enabled improvements in the grinding mills' operation.

Computer programs are described which help the metallurgist to process sample data from a plant survey; to carry out simple mass balance calculations; to present the results of circuit and equipment performance in convenient form; and to simulate the circuit response to changing operating conditions. The uses and limitations of these programs are explained by following through a case study of the sulphide flotation circuit at Cleveland Tin Ltd. The circuit was sampled, the data analysed, and some process inefficiencies established. Simulation calculations were then made to provide information on which to base decisions regarding possible circuit changes aimed at improving performance.

This work describes preliminary laboratory testwork to study the relative leaching response to cyanidation and thiourea leaching of an oxidised low grade gold ore. The potential of an alternative lixiviant like thiourea to commercial processing of mine dumps is discussed by specific reference to selected case histories. The effect of various types of solid carbonaceOlls reductants on the rate of fuming of zinc from lead blast furnace slag was investigated at I250°C.The results of the laboratory experiments indicated that the rate of removal of zinc from slag depended primarily on the volatile matter contents of the reduclants. The effects of fixed carbon, moisture and ash contents were less significant.

Previous methods for the assessment of the explosive potential of gas mixtures have required the plotting of apeexplosibility diagram. These became cumbersome if a large -number of assessments of various sampling locations over a period of time wererequired. This may make the approach of a dangerous situation more difficult to predict. With the aid of a programmable calculator, a new method for the rapid assessment of the explosibility of coal mine sample gases has been developed. This method does not require that an explosibility diagram be drawn to indicate the explosive status of a gas mixture. Simple Cartesian co-ordinates representing the explosive potential of,mixtures are obtained, which may readily be plotted to show changes with time.

The fluorite/oleate system has been studied extensively since the begin- nings of flotation research. The well-defined relatively simple crystal structure of fluorite and its ionic bonding make it a model system for study. Our understanding of fluorite/ oleate flotation chemistry continues to grow but as yet remains incomplete. Besides a review of our understanding of this system, recent findings are presented in this paper, and new research horizons are identified.

The Lower Palaeozoic Woolomin Association is composed of chert and jasper (often radiolarian), siliceous argillite, the mafic volcanics with associated hyaloclastites, and occasional greywacke and limestone lenses. Several "Cyprus-type", conformable pyritic copper (+/- zinc and cobalt} sulphide lenses are spatially related to individual mafic volcanic units and manganiferous chert and/or jasper. The Association has been interpreted to represent an oceanic crustal remnant generated either in an island arc environment (Herbert, 1981) or at a divergent plate boundary (Scheibner and Glen, 1972; Leitch, 1974a, 1975) later to be obducted, or tectonically emplaced, into continental crust; the adjacent Peel Fault was considered to be the palaeo-obduction zone (Scheibner and Glen, 1972) and the associated alpine-type mafic/ultramafic complex, an ophiolite (Crook and Felton,1975).

Highly weathered ground, limited collar options and the need to achieve a desired outcome at the lowest possible cost led to the need to adopt a construction approach that had no established design methodology. The newest ventilation shaft at Mandalay Resources’ Costerfield Operations had to be established to a depth of 30 m through poor ground best described as ‘sticky swelling clay’, some of which was contained within an old backfilled pit.The ability to excavate a traditional presink was not possible due to limited space and the introduction of men into the shaft was to be avoided due to the associated safety risks and corresponding increase in cost. Piling in conjunction with raise boring and remote fibrecrete application was identified as a possible solution that could achieve the desired outcome at an acceptable level of risk.Construction of the piles was challenging and required continual refinement until an acceptable level of productivity could be achieved. Limitations on concrete delivery was taken into consideration to ensure hole stand-up time was acceptable and re-drills were not required. The adoption of a set process from alignment, drilling, concrete placement and testing ensured the desired design was achieved. Mine operators should consider the use of piling as a method of shaft stabilisation for the portion of raise bored shaft that passes through the weathered zone.The importance of quality control and attention to detail through the entire shaft construction process cannot be underestimated as issues such as insufficient geotechnical investigation, pile and pilot hole deviation, concrete and fibrecrete quality, as well as delays in the application of fibrecrete can place the success of the project at risk.This paper outlines key learnings from a client’s perspective with regards to the concept, planning, design, execution and completion of a 3.1 m diameter raise bore shaft through both weathered and highly structured ground at the Augusta Mine.CITATION:Green, S and Austerberry, R, 2014. The Tugun Bypass Tunnel in Gold Coast, Australia was constructed using diaphragm walls with the top-down cut-and-cover method to allow simultaneous construction of an airport runway extension above the tunnel, whilst excavation of the tunnel continued underneath. The tunnel was built in an environment of high groundwater table and deep deposits of alluvial and estuarine soils with the toes of the walls founded in soil deposits. There was a potential risk for differential settlements to occur between the diaphragm wall panels, caused by the runway fill placed over the tunnel roof during excavation. Dewatering within the diaphragm walls was required to facilitate the construction of the tunnel. The tunnel was also built in an area where environmental considerations were of great importance. Three-dimensional numerical modelling was undertaken to predict the differential settlements of the tunnel with considerations of varying subsurface profile, staged excavation and dewatering, non- uniform surface loading and complex soil-structure interaction. Field instrumentation and monitoring was implemented to confirm numerical predictions.

The characteristics and causes of the spoil pile failures at the Goonyella Mine are described, and research results from investigations of spoil pile instability are discussed. Some effects on spoil stability of the development of deep strip mining projects are considered and recommendations are made for relevant research.

Based on twenty years of experiences of applying computers in mine water engineering in Hungary, a program package was developed for home utilization and for other users abroad as well. This program package has been adapted to the CAD System of Coal Mining of COMECON countries. The main features of the "mine water subsystem" in the CAD System of Coal Mining and short descriptions of the key programs of the package are presented in this paper. Foreword The serious water problems of Hungarian mining pressed and/or stimulated its professionals to apply computers for supporting their problem-solutions. The first trials of these computer applications in mine water engineering were dated from the sixties. Owing to its twenty years of experiences in computer appli- cations in mine water engineering the Central Institute for the Development of Mining in Hungary was requested to work out the "Subsystem of Mine Water" for the Computer Aided Design System ('CAD) of Coal Mines in COMECON countries. This paper gives a brief presentation on the main features of this "subsystem"with reference to significant components.

Studies of the morphology of seamounts within the Hawaiian, Line Islands, Gilbert and Phoenix Seamount groups indicate that the morphology and size distribution of seamounts vary significantly from one seamount group to another. The Line Islands group appears to be the most complicated of all the groups studied thus far. This group is complicated by reactivation of volcanism, which has superimposed volcanics on sedimentary rocks. These seamounts display abundant volcanic features on their summits. Seamounts within the Hawaiian seamount chain display a marked absence of volcanic features due to the . presence of thick carbonate caps. Reef platforms and sealevel benches are very common on these seamounts but are absent from seamounts in most other seamount chains in the central Pacific. Slope angles vary regionally between seamount groups. The minimum slopes are found on Necker Ridge in the central Pacific basin. The maximum slopes are found on ridge-crest seamounts. Roughness increases proportionally with mean slope angle.

The paper describes a method of making quantitative mineralogical measurements on many of the major lead/zinc orebodies in Australia. The work was done using QEM*SEM. It was found that a relationship betwen phase-specific surface area and particle size, when plotted in a suitable way, gave a straight line with slope related to the grain size of the mineral in question. The method provides an excellent way of differen- tiating between minerals in existing orebodies and, consequently, an easy way to establish a comparison between a new prospect or orezone and current operations.

Roadheader tunnelling machines have been used in Australia by both mining companies and contractors involved in the mining and con- struction industries since the early 1970's. They have both advantages and limitations, and this paper discusses machine excavation from the point of view of a contractor who has both reaped the benefits and suffered the conse- quences of using roadheaders. The paper also includes brief descriptions of three projects tackled by roadheader, all the projects being Declines.
