Queensland Alumina Limited (QAL) is the worldÆs largest producer of smelter grade alumina, located in Gladstone, Queensland, Australia. The plant employs evaporative cooling towers for waste heat rejection. Process water requirements include red mud residue disposal, steam venting to the atmosphere and Calcination feed moisture. Raw (untreated) water consumption in 2001 was 37 700 m3/d or 3.8 m3 per tonne of production. The Gladstone region experienced a water shortage in the period 2001 to 2003, resulting in progressive water restrictions. Industry operated under a ten per cent restriction from April 2002 and in November 2002 a 25 per cent restriction came in force. The maximum restriction level of 50 per cent was anticipated for the middle of 2003. Water restrictions of these magnitudes have the potential to result in significant production limitations, which would have major economic consequences for QALÆs owners, customers, suppliers and employees. Therefore it was imperative that measures be found to mitigate the impact of these restrictions. Furthermore, as one of the largest water users in the Gladstone region, QAL had an obligation to the community to minimise water usage as much as possible. A thorough analysis of water usage on site was conducted, focussing on all water streams leaving the plant. The philosophy used was that by minimising water outputs, the inputs would follow suit. Where possible, preference was given to solutions that provided lasting water savings. This occurs when the value of the water saving justifies the project cost, irrespective of water restrictions. By June 2002 an average water saving of 19 per cent was achieved, almost double the required saving. By end November 2002 further projects had increased the total water saving to 29 per cent, mainly through the re-use of GladstoneÆs municipal treated effluent as wash water. Further measures to reach the target of 50 per cent reduction were investigated. The evaporative cooling system was to be replaced with seawater cooling, using cooling towers to minimise the seawater pumping cost. Another benefit of this concept was the ability to dispose of the cooling tower bleed stream with the existing system for neutralised red mud disposal. This would avoid the need for an additional environmental outfall from the plant. In February 2003 the Gladstone region received over 500 mm of rain, which boosted water reserves to five years supply at forecast usage rates. This led to the lifting of all water restriction. As most of the implemented water savings measures are economically viable in the absence of water restrictions, raw water usage at QAL is still less than 75 per cent of pre-2002 levels.

Scrutiny of the whole explosives industry has increased as a result of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon on 11 September 2001 and the bombings in Indonesia, including the Bali bombings last year. This has been highlighted in specific press releases from governing bodies, like the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources û Western Australia, on the necessity of being in compliance with regulations for storage of explosives. As a result, audits by inspectors to assess compliance are to be expected. In a proactive move, DynoConsult has assisted several customers through benchmarking current practices, in order to identify any areas of non-compliance to the statutory requirements for explosive storage and security. This paper discusses the outcomes of supplier discussions and customer audits and highlights the implications for the industry.

Ferromanganese metasediments in the immediate vicinity of the Mid-Proterozoic Broken Hill Pb-Zn-Ag lodes, have undergone high grade (upper amphibolite facies) metamorphism,to form Mn-pyroxenoid (rhodonite,pyroxmangite) and garnet-rich lithologies. Such lithologies bear compositional (bulk rock,rare earth element)and morphological similarities to recent and ancient ferromanganese hydrothermal sediments of the Pacific.The non-metasomatic,stratiform garnetites are predominantly composed of magnesia-rich, calcium-poor almandine spessartine and quartz, which possess a bulk chemistry comparable to alumina-rich ferrommanganese oxide deposits of the Pacific. Such sediments are attributed to a mixed protolith comprised of clay and ferro-manganese oxides (mainly amorphous goethite with lesser todorockite-birnessite). Manganiferous pyroxenoid rocks are probably derived from alumina-poor ferromanganese cherts,similar to Japanese tetsusekiei.Rare earth element compositions ofBroken Hill garnetites are very similar to those of recent ferromanganese seafloor accumulations, suggestive of some genetic link.

Warkworth Mining has been successfully operating a large open cut coal mining operation in the Hunter Valley of NSW since 1981.The mine is a complexmulti seam operation and utalises both truck and shovel and draglinetechniques. Warkworth Coal Sales Ltd markets approximately 10 different coal types.Since the mines inceptionthe development of mine scheduling and planning has been an ongoing programme. Resource recovery and coal utalisation have been the driving factors with this development as we strive to achieve maximum revenue for the investment dollar.The principal aim of this paper is to discuss the scheduling methodology as it is utilised todayhighlighting the interaction in the development of the final coal products schedule.Whilst the system is notperfect it has evolved and operated successfully in these difficult economic times and offers a practical and achievable approach to resource optimisation.

Underground metalliferous mining methods often result in the formation of vertical openings to facilitate the extraction of orebodies. These development and production techniques can result in the creation of vertical open voids, which include stopes, orepasses, ventilation raises and other excavations. There are risks associated with the use of mobile plant in the vicinity of these voids, especially during backfilling and when bunds are constructed at the edge of a stope or void. These voids can present unacceptable risks if not adequately managed.

The sizing and classification circuits at the Mt. Newman Beneficiation Plant have performed satisfactorily. Investigations have been aimed at solving minor problems and achieving small' improvements. Emphasis has been placed on cost reduction rather than metallurgical performance. It has been found that some circuits will give better performance with the sieve bends removed. 1.0 BACKGROUND Mt. Newman. Mining operates a major iron ore mine in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Rainfall is sparse (average 250 mm/year). Current mining is all above the water table. What rain there is tends to run off quickly instead of soaking in. The total operation produces about 30 Mt/ year of saleable product. Most of this product comes from high grade crushing plants where ore from the quarries is simply crushed and conveyed to product stockpiles. About 3 Mt/ year comes from the Beneficiation Plant.

Overcoring is a common technique to measure in situ rock stress using the concept of stress relief. The strains measured during overcoring are used to calculate the stress tensor assuming continuous, homogeneous, isotropic and linear elastic behaviour. This approach does not recognise any effect of the thickness of the rock annulus produced during overcoring instead assuming that the stresses are entirely a function of the difference in strain between the start of the overcoring and the end with no regard to the transient strains produced. Three-dimensional numerical modelling was used to simulate the overcoring process and investigate the impact of core diameter on the transient stresses and strains during overcoring. This study showed that in thicker core, maximum transient axial stresses and strains occur when the drill bit approaches the measuring point and greater tensile axial stresses were produced when the annulus was thinner. The mining industry was one of the first to be directly regulated by legislation in the 19th century when British public opinion was mobilised by reformers seeking social change. In the next wave of mining safety legislation, account was taken of technological advances in the industry, but again, the amendments were in large measure driven by public expectations following a series of disastrous mining accidents with great loss of life. The result was the prescriptive and detailed type of regulation that has, to a great extent, remained with and become a way of life in the mining industry of today. In 1970, the then British Government appointed Lord Robens, a former Chairman of the National Coal Board, to head a Committee of Inquiry to consider the arrangements then in place for preserving the safety and health of people at work and to consider and make recommendations on the need for change in the legislation governing such matters. The result was the 1972 report Safety and Health at Work which, in turn, resulted in the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 (UK). This Act, which embodied the now familiar concepts of consultation with the workforce on matters relating to health and safety and the statutory application of the previously existing Common Law concept of the duty of care, became the model for much occupational health and safety legislation in many places around the world, including the various States of Australia. As a result of the `Robens style' of legislation, the regulators of the mining industry have had the opportunity to become less prescriptive and to introduce an `enabling' style in their statutes. This has not always been welcomed by the industry which has, to some extent, missed the comfort of knowing exactly what is required of it in order to ensure compliance with the legislation while appreciating the `self-regulatory' opportunities that the new style of regulation offered.

Christmas Island "C"-grade phosphate consists essentially of the minerals crandallite and millisite. Although containing over 25% P205, this material is not suitable for the manufacture of water-soluble phosphate fertilizers by conventional processes, because of its high iron and aluminium content Cover 25% total R203). In order to produce a water-soluble fertilizer from such material it is necessary to separate the iron and aluminium from the phosphate, which must report in a product acceptable as a fertilizer. Several processes were studied in detail. The first used ion exchange for dissolution and separation and yielded diammonium phosphate; processing costs were high compared with conven- tional processes based on apatite. The latter processes have basically simple flowsheets and cost of processing is low when compared with the costs of the raw materials. The need to separate iron and aluminium from the phosphate introduces additional complexity into the treatment of the C-grade material. The higher processing costs might be justified, however, if alumina could be produced as a byproduct. Two proposed processes have been developed in which: 1. hydrochloric acid is used for dissolution, and solvent extrac- tion for the separation of ferric chloride from phosphoric acid. Aluminium chloride is precipitated and hydrolysed to recover alumina and hydrochloric acid. 2. sulphuric acid is used for dissolution and aluminium is crystallized as ammonium alum. The phosphate is produced as an ammonium phosphate-sulphate fertilizer. High purity alumina can be obtained by treatment of the recrystallized alum. The technology of these processes is described, and their broad economics discussed briefly.\

Builders have been very familiar with iron since ancient times, but because of its weathering characteristics it was relegated to use as a fastening material in unexposed places and bronze became the popular metal for exposed applications. It is of interest that iron nails buried deeply about A.D. 87 at a Roman fortress and carefully covered with clean beaten earth under conditions practically excluding oxygen were found to be almost unrusted 1870 years later. (1) Today, weathering steels, which contain less than 2% of alloying additions, can be used in exposed situations without protection and without experiencing continuous wastage. As we all know the steady access of atmospheric oxygen to the surface of plain steel causes continuous corrosion. Weathering steels, on the other hand, due to their alloying additions develop their own impervious surface layer which limits the access of atmospheric oxygen and effectively limits corrosion. Table 1 shows the chemical composition of a plain carbon steel and a typical weathering steel. Fig. 1 shows what we refer to as direct corrosion - time curves in which corrosion loss is plotted against time of exposure in an strial environment. The weathering steel has a high rate initially which then decreases steadily for about three years, as the stable rust film builds up. This is followed by a practically linear relation where the very low corrosion rate, according to one school (2), is due to a blocking of the rust pores by insoluble complex salts formed from interaction of the oxidation products of the separate alloying elements. The start of the linear region represents a total corrosion loss of only about 2 thousandths of an inch.

In North Vietnam, large ductile shear zones are observed along the Red river fault and the Dienbien fault. Left-lateral sense of the Red river shear zone is related to the direction of shortening E-W. NE dipping foliation planes is subvertical. Stretching lineation is subhorizontal ( 25¦). Left-lateral slip observed in the Oligocene Yansun granites demonstrates the major tectonic phase in Neogene, The stress field established from microfaults observed in triassic limestones, Oligocene granites and Neogene Conglomerates. Measurements of striations on fault mirors are used for calculating the stress tensor and for separating tectonic phases. Two tectonic phases in tertiary are separated : first tectonic phase related to the compressive direction E-W corresponds to the major tectonic phase represented by NW left-lateral shear zone. Second phase having the compressive direction N-S associated with the right-lateral movement of the Red-river fault zone opening of the Eastern sea and the Red-river and the Red-river delta is associated with the left-lateral movement along the Red-river.

The electrolytic recovery of metals from solution requires an understanding of the characteristics of the particular system employed, and the current efficiency and morphology of the deposit are influenced by such factors as cell design, metal ion and supporting ion concentration, acid concentration, temperature, impurity levels and cell design. The electrolytic deposition of both cadmium and silver present individual difficulties, and special cell designs are used for each of these metals. It was found that cadmium deposition was plate-like at lower cadmium concentrations, and at higher current densities. The presence of zinc in the electrolyte promoted nodular growth. Current efficiency remained high even at 50C in contrast to published information. Silver deposition morphology was relatively unaffected by changes in silver concentration, pH and current density. Current efficiency was reduced as temperature was increased.

Polymetallic hydrothermal veins of the Western Cascades are hosted in propylitically altered Tertiary volcanics of calc-alkaline affinity and (or) in nearby, altered, and compositionally similar plutons. Ores from shallow and now abandoned mines produced mostly gold and were considered to be of epithermal origin. However, recent discovery of breccia and porphyry types of Cu-Mo mineralisation and other data suggest that the deposits of this terrane vary systematically both regionally, south to north, and locally, high to low altitudes. The evidence includes changes in (1) size, composition, and complexity of plutons, (2) types of mineral deposits; (3) assemblages of alteration and ore minerals; (4) trace metal geochemistry of host rocks; and (5) fluid inclusion and sulphur isotope data. They collectively imply a consanguineous origin of vein, breccia, and disseminated-veinlet types of mineralisation by magmatic hydrothermal processes.

In April 2013, Rio Tinto Kennecott Copper’s (RTKC) Bingham Canyon mine experienced what is arguably the world’s largest ever in-pit slope failure. The failure initiated along a major, continuous, low-strength bedding fault, named the Manefay bed, and comprised approximately 145Mtonnes of rock and waste dump material. Initial East wall slope deformations were detected some months prior to catastrophic slope collapse by RTKC’s slope monitoring systems. However, the failure mechanism was different to that which had historically been experienced in the prior more-than-100 years of open pit mining. Failure occurred as two separate events, the initial one likely consisting of a frictional failure of rock materials along the Manefay bed itself, before a second phase of failure occurred, which included a large mass of old rail dump material. The combination of these events led to a much larger failure run-out than had been anticipated by the RTKC team which led to loss of, and damage to, mining equipment and infrastructure as well as significant interruption to mining activities. Due to the diligent monitoring of the slopes no safety impacts were experienced at the mine, and as such the details and learnings from this failure can readily be shared with the broader mining and geotechnical industries to avoid similar recurrences elsewhere. The importance of reducing the moisture content of fine coal, the nature of the retained water and the means of its removal are discussed. A statistical technique, using a balanced block design, was used to isolate the significant factors determining water content of a coal filter cake, The most significant factor was particle size distribution. A simplex evolutionary operation (evop) was used to determine the optimal quantities of additives required to produce the lowest moisture content for a selected coal size. For this optimum condition (18.6 lb xÇ20 per 100 lb dry coal), additions of 0.045 lb magnesium ion, 0.0026 lb separan A.P. 30, and 0.098 lb aerosol O.T., per 100 lb dry coal were required. The work illustrated the uses of statistical evop technique for the determination of optimal conditions in industrial research projects.

Copper sulfate is traditionally used to activate various types of sulfide minerals. The list of users includes Falconbridge Sudbury operations, where copper sulfate solution is added to the pyrrhotite/pentlandite middlings at the scavenging stage. Results from some batch tests reported in the literature suggested that copper activation is helpful for the improvement of pentlandite recovery, especially in the difficult to float fine particle range. Any improvement in pentlandite recovery is important since it is the main nickel bearing sulfide mineral. The impact of copper sulfate for this function has been investigated. Since the focus of current investigation was the flotation behaviour of minerals at the scavenger stage, rougher flotation was kept as constant as possible at two different weight recoveries, namely 13.2 per cent and 15.5 per cent that is relevant to industrial practice. Samples taken during batch testing were extracted using DETA and flotation products from selected tests were analysed to determine the recovery by size behaviour in relation to the use of copper sulfate. Results provide significant evidence that the addition of copper sulfate to these middlings does not yield greater nickel recovery, either on an overall or specific particle size basis. It is concluded that copper sulfate is wasted in the process and that self activation behaviour of the ore at a slightly reduced pH is sufficiently significant to maintain the scavenger recovery of pyrrhotite and pentlandite at desirable levels. Results obtained from limited circuit trials have shown supporting evidence for this conclusion.

The ore reserves of the Frieda porphyry copper prospect in Papua New Guinea have been estimated using kriging and an alternative method. Only very erratic variograms could be obtained from the raw data and thus it can be expected that kriging variances will be unrel- iable. The frequency distributions of the two sets of estimates show expected differences and the resulting mineable reserves show similar expected differences. More drilling and the use of disjunctive kriging are needed to produce reliable estim- Ates.

API Management Pty Ltd (API) is currently developing the West Pilbara Iron Project (the ‘Project’). The Project is a substantial greenfi elds mining and infrastructure development proposed for the west Pilbara region of Western Australia. The Project will establish API as a new and independent supplier of direct shipped iron ore. API manages the Australian Premium Iron Joint Venture (APIJV) on behalf of joint venture participants Aquila Resources Ltd and American Metals and Coal International Inc. The APIJV was formed in February 2005 with the objective of developing a long-term iron ore export operation in the west Pilbara region.Development of Stage 1 comprises a 30 million tonne per annum (Mt/a) channel iron deposit (CID) operation scheduled to commence in the second half of 2014 subject to approvals. JORC compliant CID resources total nearly 700 million tonnes and the Stage 1 mining area comprises eight iron ore deposits located between 30 km and 85 km south of Pannawonica. Run-of-mine ore from the eight deposits is transported to a central processing facility for crushing, screening and blending into a sinter fines product, which API has named West Pilbara Fines or WPF. Construction of a 282 km main line heavy haulage railway from the Stage 1 mining area to the proposed greenfields multi-user port at Anketell Point near Wickham, is capable of accommodating large Capesize bulk carriers and providing export facilities for other third parties. Capital investment in the order of $A6 billion includes essential support infrastructure including power, water, accommodation, roads and an airport at the mine.A feasibility study for the development of the Stage 1 mine, rail and port infrastructure has been completed along with environmental surveys of the mine, rail and port areas with Public Environmental Reviews (PERs) for each submitted for public review by end 2010. Consultation and cooperation with various stakeholders of the Project areas, and early engagement with traditional owners of the respective areas has commenced. Various sampling and metallurgical characterisation programs combined with independent institute and steel mill based testing have confirmed the positive sintering characteristics of WPF ore, which is higher in alumina (3.37 per cent) than typical Pilbara ores. *This is an abstract only.
