Digital photogrammetry is revolutionising the task of geotechnical mapping of jointed rock masses and has greatly increased in popularity and sophistication in recent years. Modern commercially available digital photogrammetry software systems can provide geotechnical practitioners with a user friendly tool for rapid data acquisition. The data can be acquired remotely from large exposure areas, some of which may be otherwise out of reach due to restrictions on time, access or safety.Photogrammetry is a complimentary technology to discrete fracture network (DFN) modelling because it can provide the large, statistically significant, spatially located geotechnical data sets required to produce the most robust results. It also provides the flexibility to selectively map structures at a range of scales, depending on the focus of the DFN modelling.Integration of the interpreted rock structure data derived from photogrammetry with modern DFN modelling methods really advances the rock engineering process. The ability to generate 3D fracture models driven by the statistical structural data and conditioned to the features observed by the photogrammetry yields a synthetic rock mass on which improved design methods can be applied. The generation of multiple equi-probable conditioned DFN models allows the use of probabilistic methods for assessing kinematic stability, rock block size distribution as well as a range of other applications.CITATION:Rogers, S F and Booth, P W, 2014. Pipe umbrella support systems – also called canopy tube systems – have been used successfully for tunnelling in challenging ground conditions since the 1970s. Historically, the drilling unit was the limiting factor for pipe umbrella installations – less attention has been paid to pipe couplings and their influence on labour time and load-bearing capacity.This contribution investigates the influence of the type of pipe connection on the load bearing characteristics of a connected pipe and discusses associated influences on design calculations and installation performance. Standard thread connections reduce the effective cross-section and thereby load-bearing capacity in the connection area. To achieve design parameters, over-dimensioning of the un-weakened pipe section is the only way to overcome this limitation. Recently, two new, alternative connection types were designed and developed for connected pipe umbrella pipes. The first one is the nipple coupling, consisting of fitting with a threaded connection that is pressed and welded into the ends of standard tubes. The second type is the squeezed connection, which mechanically connects non-threaded pipe ends, achieved by force-fitted squeezing from the drill rig. Both coupling types have technical as well as operational advantages compared to the common thread couplings, which are the weakest point in the support system.In the following sections significant technical differences are explained, design values given and a site example presented to illustrate the operational advantages of the newly developed coupling?type.CITATION:Volkmann, G M, 2014. A testwork program aimed to improve the assaying of underground face samples established that for an Accelerated Cyanidation Extraction using the LeachWELLTM 60X catalyst, followed by an Aqua Regia finish (to quantify non-cyanide-extractable gold): ò Assay results (including the aqua regia finish) from a full set of samples from one underground face can be returned within four hours. ò The reagent dose to make the method simple and 'bullet-proof' is 8 gm LeachWELLTM 60X and 20 gm NaCN per 200 gm sample (30 per cent solids). Pulverising is to 90 per cent passing 75 micron (compared to the standard of 90 per cent passing 150 micron), and cyanidation is completed within one hour - however both might be further optimised. ò The LeachWELLTM/Aqua Regia results demonstrate that Fire Assays suffer from a significant nugget effect which makes the Fire Assay data relatively unreliable. ò Original costs, specific to Bannockburn (viz including an Aqua Regia finish), handling approximately 20 000 to 25 000 per annum is estimated to be $5.40, ie about one-third less than fire assaying. Optimising is further reducing these costs. It is estimated that the LeachWELLT"'/Aqua Regia assay procedure has reduced the probable error limits of any given assay of this ore from the range 0.74x to 1.36x for Fire Assay, to an appreciably smaller range of 0.90x to 1.11x. Thus for a cut-off grade of 1.60 g Au/t, samples with Fire Assays ranging up to 2.18 g Au/t have 25 per cent chance of being below cut-off, while samples with Fire Assays as low as 1.18 g Au/t have an equal chance of actually exceeding cut-off grade. This 1 g Au/t range in uncertainty is generally unacceptable for many practicalgrade/tonnage relationships. By contrast, using LeachWELLTM + Aqua Regia assays, the estimated corresponding limits are 1.44 g Au/t and 1.78 g Auk respectively - a far more tolerable 0.34 g Au/t range of uncertainty. Subsequent data has demonstrated that sufficient accuracy for grade control is achieved by Accelerated Cyanidation alone, further halving the cost of assays.

From depths of 400 - 600 m, coal is transported by a conveyor in a drift or a bulk winder in a shaft, whilst men and/or materials are transported by a slope hauler or a cage winder. Assessment of the effect of alternative combinations on the key cost factors - output, capital, labour cost and construction time - allows the optimum choice for particular circumstances, there being no uniform solution.

In the mining industry, crusher-related incidents have led to 15 reported deaths in Australia, New Zealand, and the USA between 1998 and 2007 (NSW Government Resources Regulator, 2024). The majority of these fatalities occurred during routine crusher maintenance tasks. A survey of quarry and mine site maintenance staff was completed to ascertain what they thought of such safety device to understand if beneficial and if so reasons if unused. Overall, findings show, staff perceived risks differently, cost, familiarity, device awareness and not front of mind, influenced adoption. This underscores the importance of asking the right questions involving maintenance and safety staff to lead to more proactive risk assessment.

Copper and gold mineralisation at Batu Hijau is directly related to quartz veining and wall rock alteration that developed in close spatial and temporal association with multiple tonalite porphyry intrusions. To its advantage with respect to the study and better understanding of the evolution of the porphyry system, Batu Hijau has comparatively minor late alteration and mineralisation overprints. This paper summarises results of detailed geological logging, petrographic studies and geochemical analyses of diamond drill cores from the deeper sections of the Batu Hijau porphyry system (ie its roots). Mineral processing plants have become large and complex, generally through progressive expansions. Addition of a pre-crushing stage to conventional Semi-Autogenous-Grinding (SAG) and ball mill - crushing (SABC) circuits has introduced a complex materials handling system coping with +200 mm particles. Application of High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGRs) and implementing hybrid comminution circuits (ie, HPGR-SAG mill) requires proactive control of the feed size distribution to each unit. Application of Vertical Tower Mills (VTMs) and other fine grinding equipment to achieve a finer grind size, while maintaining the throughput, requires splitting the feed evenly between parallel units. Many of the conventional comminution circuits (ie, staged crushing and screening followed by staged ball milling) must deal with the transition from open pit ore, which is generally altered and soft, to underground ore, which is intact and hard, requiring existing crushers to produce a finer product to unload the ball mills.This paper presents common process improvement opportunities which have been identified during a number plant process reviews conducted by the authors in Australian and international operations. The operation of comminution circuits to known and accepted standards, which is explained in this paper, could improve the performance of circuits by between 5 and 10 per cent, generally at no capital cost and often at a lower operating cost. The performance improvement can be realised as throughput increase, a finer product size, or reduced operating costs (ie, energy saving, low maintenance, less consumables).Process optimisation opportunities presented in this paper include: enhancing materials handling and storage to avoid segregation; standard operation of screens to reduce misplaced materials; proper feeding arrangement and control of crushers to increase their utilisation; preparing proper feed for SAG mills to reduce grind size; splitting the feed evenly between parallel equipment to improve utilisation, and controlling operation of classification units to improve energy utilisation.CITATION:Yahyaei, M and Powell, M S, 2018. In sizing of wet coal by the horizontal vibrating screen, screen openings to be used is much restricted, because coal is sticky and its bulk density is little. The electrically heated screen and other various types of screen had been tried to screen raw coal and coal as raw materials at a few mm. However, they failed to realize satisfactory results. On the other hand, fine sizing of coal is requested by many fields. For example, raw coal is desired to be screened at the fine rate, before being fed to the coal preparation control system in order to transport undersizes as unprepared coal particles and to reduce load in coal preparation waste water treatment system.1) Coals fed to the fluidized bed boiler also should be sized at a few mm. Regardless of many requests on fine sizing of coal, it seems that there are many cases to omit the basic screening process, because the screening is very difficult on a industrial scale. Size control as pretreatment of coal as raw materials is presented as one of the basic screening processes. In 1979, Kinki Industrial Co., Ltd. and Nippon Steel Corporation jointly succeeded in developing the vertical centrifugal screen. Closed -circuit crushing system by the use of this screen has operated actually at N.S.C, Hirbhata .Works, and realized the anticipated result. Consequently, this system has established the position as the most basic technology in the coal preparation. 2), 3), 4) This system has been also introduced to Nakayama Steel Works, Ltd. in 1982. This system termed the CPC (Coal Preparation Control) Process has been operated smoothly in both N.S.C. and Nakayama. Reported herein is the practical application of the vertical centrifugal screen termed V3-Separator. (V3 means vertical, versatile and vibration.)

The discovery of the Cuffley Lode at Mandalay Resources Costerfield Operations provided an opportunity to extend mine life via mining the offset depth extension of the previously worked Alison Mine. Access from the existing Augusta Mine placed the initial Cuffley underground workings at approximately 250 metres depth from surface. As the new orebody transitioned towards production, a secondary means of egress needed to be established. The depth of the initial capital development presented a challenge in establishing a secondary means of egress that could be confidently relied on. The availability of land to locate a surface shaft collar further reduced available options and geotechnical drilling further limited suitable shaft locations. Time limiting factors such as permitting and having a secondary means of egress in as soon as possible, further highlighted that an innovative secondary means of egress was needed. A consideration of using an emergency gig lowered by a suitable sized crane supplied by an external crane contractor was investigated and found to be a suitable outcome. This Emergency Gig was deployed via the Cuffley Return Air Raise. When trialled, the emergency gig was found to provide a reliable, repeatable extraction method with an acceptable level of risk. Issues discovered during such trials further improved the process to a point where this extraction method became the adopted secondary means of egress for additional lodes that existed at depth. When assessing possible methods of secondary means of egress, the use of a third-party crane and custom designed and fabricated emergency gig should not be discounted. Where a crane can be sourced within an acceptable timeframe, the emergency gig extraction method provides a reliable safe and cost-effective means of secondary means of egress, especially when multiple shafts are to be developed. Local laws may negate the ability to employ such a system, although it is believed with good communication and well-constructed risk assessments, this system can be safely deployed.

Glencore operates zinc concentrators at both Mount Isa and McArthur River. Both orebodies have a history of complexity and required the development of new technologies to maximise the value from these long-life assets. The Mount Isa orebodies were plagued since operations started in 1931 with complex mineral textures making separation challenging and many areas uneconomic. Examples are given in Figure 1 with different grain sizes from the same orebody in different areas. The McArthur River deposit, located in the Northern Territory, was discovered by Mount Isa Mines geologists in 1955 (Logan, Murray and Williams 1990). The extremely fine-grained nature of the ore was quickly recognised and the difficult separation of the minerals was soon obvious. The geographical, metallurgical and economic factors resulted in the orebody not being developed until the technologies for the mineral separation had been developed. The development of the IsaMill allowed for an economic mineral separation flowsheet to be developed and ore treatment commenced in May 1995 (Nihill, Stewart and Bowen 1998). Downhole survey uncertainties observed at various De Beers operations prompted an investigation into their possible effect on deposit shape and volume. An accurately surveyed artificial æboreholeÆ was constructed and different downhole survey instruments tested. In this way an empirically determined error range of 0.1 per cent to ten per cent was derived for downhole survey data. These survey errors were applied to an orebody model at an existing mine. Visualising the sphere of uncertainty associated with a borehole trace using a general mining package (GMP) gives an indication of possible volume variance. The resulting orebody maximum and minimum volume scenarios for three different depths (200 m, 500 m and 800 m) are presented. For certain instruments and borehole angles, the 3D positional error can be as high as 100 m at 1000 m down the hole. At depths below 200 m the resulting volume deviations can become significant for borehole survey errors exceeding 0.35 per cent. At 800 m depth the volume difference can approach 25 per cent. These figures assume that the error is compounded. The impact of these downhole survey errors is greatest for pipe-like orebodies such as porphyries and kimberlite pipes. Subhorizontal sill-like orebodies (and coal seams) will not be significantly affected by these errors. The impact of this type of survey error needs to be stated (and quantified) and is significant in JORC classification.

This paper examines a successful project implemented by BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) and the Polymathian team at Deswik, aimed at enhancing short-term scheduling processes to reduce vessel turn times in the BMA Central Queensland coal value chain. The project’s objective was to digitalise the planning process to enable planners to make data-driven insights to improve the profitability of the value chain. The strategy involved developing a digital mining system that incorporates data storage, cloud computing, and the ability to meet the integration needs of both internal and external business systems. This was complemented by a sophisticated, optimisation-based, decision-support tool to enhance the planning teams’ ability to make timely and effective decisions.

Sinter plants currently have to use many types of ores with different properties due to the great demand for iron ores, which was driven by the massive growth in Chinese iron and steel industry. On the other hand, the development of iron ore mines is limited and the quality of iron ores is in a tendency of deterioration. Therefore, the quick evaluation of iron ores has become more important for a stable sintering operation. In addition to such a background, the CO2 gas emission should be decreased from sinter plants according to the Kyoto Protocol on reduction in greenhouse gases. The present paper first describes the methods for testing the metallurgical properties of iron ores, which use a small volume of sample mainly focusing on magnetite ore that is effective for reducing CO2 and NOx emissions from sinter plants. The sintering properties of ores are evaluated separately according to each stage in sintering process, that is: heating stage before melt formation, primary melt formation in adhering fines layer of pseudo-particles, and assimilation of nucleus ore particle with calcium-ferrite system melts.Next, the application of the tests to the blending ores is introduced showing examples of the studies on the effective usage of the magnetite ores with Marra Mamba type ores.

The use of water covers is a globally-applied method for minimising acid rock drainage (ARD) and metal leaching. Although the subaqueous disposal of potentially acid-generating materials has been shown to effectively limit ARD, under certain scenarios, metal remobilisation can occur at circum-neutral pH. The following paper presents data from four case studies in which metal mobility from submerged mine waste resulted in degradation to water quality in the overlying water cover. Subcentimetre resolution profiling of dissolved constituents across the tailings-water interface (dialysis arrays), in conjunction with mineralogical information, were used to elucidate the controls governing metal mobility. The data illustrate four pathways of metal remobilisation, including: the release of zinc via the oxidative remineralisation of metal-rich organics at the tailings-water interface; enhanced remobilisation of arsenic as a result of anthropogenic eutrophication; the release of copper resulting from the pH-driven dissolution of treatment sludges; and the release of radium from uranium mill tailings due to the dissolution of radiobarite [(Ra,Ba)SO4] by sulfate-reducing bacteria. The results highlight the conclusion that the chemical stability of submerged tailings reflects both: the solid-phase characteristics of the tailings material; and the physical, chemical and biological characteristics of the depositional environment. In particular, the data illustrate that rigorous characterisation of both the waste solids and receiving environment must be performed in order to assess their compatibility. The results have relevance to the management of tailings repositories including constructed impoundments, pit lakes and natural lakes.

Lihir Gold Mine is situated in a dormant volcanic caldera on a small island off PNG. Not æextinctÆ but dormant. Current ground temperatures are up to 150 degrees Celsius with active geysers in the workings of the mine, pools of boiling ground water adjacent to low-grade dumps and hydrogen sulphide gas emissions. It is a unique mining environment by world standards. This paper will deal with the following issues encountered and managed by the operation:blasting in hot and reactive ground; management of sulphide gas emissions; disposal at sea of all mining waste rock; one dear to all Australian minerÆs hearts û dealing with landowner groups; and unusual human resource issues.

Barcelona Metro Line 9 (Line 9) is an essential infrastructure, improving the transversal transport in Barcelona by connecting the greater part of the currently existing radial lines. The purpose of Line 9 is to create a peripheral line surrounding the city of 1.6 million people (metropolitan area exceeds five million), and includes 52 stations, of which a total of 32 are deep shafts and 19 transfer stations in a densely populated area with several geographical constraints.The tunnel has an inner diameter of 10.90 m, bored with an earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machine (TBM) in soil sections with precast concrete lining type universal ring and segments 40 cm thick.A single tunnel solution was adopted, driven by functionality and costs savings. The internal tunnel section is divided into two levels to allow for one way rail transit including the platforms in each station on each level in order to optimise the space created by the TBM excavation and comply with the operational needs. The division in two areas of the tunnel was carried out through the construction of a horizontal slab resting on the tunnel segments with a constant thickness of 40 cm at the central part of the slab and supporting side walls.CITATION:Justa Cámara, R and Pinillos Lorenzana, L M, 2014. As the worldÆs population and global standard of living increase, the role of metals in the economy will not diminish in the 21st century, despite substitution and dematerialisation trends. Industrial Ecology is an emerging science that attempts to bring together physical, biological and social scientists and develop the tools for good management of the planet in the long run. In engineering terms, Industrial Ecology is defined as the reconfiguring of industrial activities with full knowledge of their environmental consequences. Production and use of materials must take into account the needs of both market and environment. Dispersive uses of metals will be phased out, as is being done with lead in gasoline, and post-use recovery of materials and energy will increase. This will result in an advantage for metallurgical processes that can use as feed materials concentrates as well as metal scrap and waste streams, such as bath smelting processes and slag resistance electric furnaces. The paper also discusses how metal extraction technologies, developed in the 20th century to provide essential materials to humanity, can be applied for the benefit of both mankind and environment in the 21st century.

In 1984 a new Regional Geological Mapping Program (RGMP) was commenced by the Geological Survey of Queensland (GSQ); the new program was in response to the withdrawal of the Bureau of Mineral Resources from regional mapping. Areas for mapping were selected in northern and south-eastern Queensland on the basis of potential for mineral discoveries, level of company interest, inaccuracies in the first edition mapping and interests of other organisations (government and universities) in joint projects.Geological provinces of particular interest in northern Queensland are the Hodgkinson Basin, parts of the Georgetown Inlier not covered by earlier BMR-GSQ mapping, Broken River Embayment, Burdekin Basin, Lolworth-Ravenswood Block, Campwyn Block and Anakie Inlier. The 1:250,000 sheets covering these areas of interest are shown in Figure 1 including those already completed, those in progress and those planned for future investigation.A flow chart showing the various phases for RGMP projects is shown in Figure 2. Data collection has two facets: (i) field recording and (ii) office work including air photo interpretation, study of company reports, literature research, petrography and various laboratory studies. Two main strands of information collected are represented by a data base and compilation sheets. Compilation sheets are generally at 1:25,000 scale and are available for purchase. The current data base is very fragmentary and can be accessed only by direct contact with the relevant geologist or via written reports. A more accessible field data base is in the process of being introduced this year; this field data base (REGMAP) is based on standardised data recording and computer storage.

ATTENTION has recently been directed to the subject of dust production and methods of allaying same in the Broken Hill mines, so that the time would seem opportune for the local branch of the Institute to discuss certain features of an important phase of the health question in connection with underground work. Tests conducted in the Broken Hill South mine and at other mines at Broken Hill have shown that the ordinary operatioils of mining, such as boring, blasting, and shovelling, may be accompanied by the production of considerable dust unless water is judiciously used.In South Africa·dust particles under 5 microns size are regarded as dangerous, becailse they are so small as to be invisible to the naked eye, and wm esc'ape the protections set up by nature in the nose and throat, and thus may be inhaled in large quantity. A micron is 1 25000th part of an inch. This paper contains an account of the work done on the Broken Hill South mine chiefly, though some tests were done on other local mines.An acknowledgment is due to Mr. T. A. This paper outlines the manner in which legislative control for tunnelling and allied operations has evolved, detailing Victorian experience. It examines the concept of mine managers as it relates to the industry and attemps to illustrate its benefits. The Victorian experience in relation to fatal and serious accidents is examined in detail, particularly in the allied art of trenching and examines the Krings system of trench lining support which is hoped will catalyse an increase of engineering expertise in this area. The paper concludes by demonstrating that safety awareness is not incompatible with production efficiency or economic viability.
