The design of composite materials for wear resistant service aims at com- bining two or more materials in such a way as to achieve unique and useful properties not generally available in any single homogeneous material. Properties and applications are presented of what might be described as a new generation of wear resistant materials, namely, metallic and part- metallic composites suitable for use in the high abrasion/moderate impact environment encountered in the crushing and screening of ore. Significant cost performance benefit can result from the use of such materials and several specific case histories are discussed. Some promising new developments, utilis- inn white iron and rubber, as yet in the field testing stage, are reviewed. Further comments are offered foreshadow- ing new composite developments, as yet untried but which appear to h,uve merit.

PT Indo Muro Kencana (PT IMK) is a surface gold and silver mine located in Mt. Muro area, Central Kalimantan province, Indonesia. The mining operations of multiple open pits using combination of excavator and haul truck is operated. This operation is performed in two shifts in a day. The articulated dump truck (ADT) with capacity of 40 t and 60 t deliver ore to the mineral processing plant and discard waste material to the waste dump area. Overall, PT IMK’s mining operation department is consisting of two sections, namely mining operation section and drill and blast section. Firstly, mine operation section is responsible to manage loading, hauling, pit service (mine dewatering, earthwork, road maintenance) and mine operation engineering. Secondly, drill and blast section is in charge to manage drilling and blasting (blast engineering, blasting operation, explosive permit and magazine or explosive storage). Additionally, conventional blasting method (ore-waste blasting) with non-electric initiation system is used and sleep blasting is undertaken as bulk explosive is buried for maximum two days. The first purpose of this paper is to elucidate about role of mining engineer in mining operation department (mining operation engineer and D&B engineer). At this point, mining operation engineering practice (fleet management system, production control and mining manpower management) and also blasting daily practice will be elucidated. Daily blasting practice is consisting of surface blast design, explosive engineering, sleep blast practice and the concept of scaled depth of burial to ensure a safe work environment in blasting activity. Next, the second purpose of this paper is to explore workforce evolution and future skills for mining engineer in surface mining operation. Furthermore, strategy to advance future skills such as mining continuous improvement program, training and skills development for mining engineer (mining operation engineer and D&B engineer) in order to develop their skills is also discussed. It is expected that in the future, these future mining leaders will become new mining leader, for instance mining superintendents, D&B superintendents and mining managers. In conclusion, it is clear that awareness about workforce evolution, professional development, training, skills development, mining economics awareness and mining continuous improvement program are essentially required as professional development for mining engineer (mining operation engineer and D&B engineer), in order to be commercially competitive in their future career and in order to be adapted with future workforce evolution in mining.

The process of sampling blasthole cones utilising personnel to manually shovel material into sample bags is a long-standing industry accepted process. However, this method has several drawbacks, including the safety issues around having personnel performing manual sampling in a harsh environment and the variability involved in getting a human to repeatedly get a ‘shovel full of dirt’, and make it always representative. Geophysical blasthole sampling, or utilising a Downhole Assaying Tool (DHAT) has been tested and has now begun implementation at many iron ore sites throughout the Pilbara region, Western Australia. This method uses a geophysical tool to capture data within blastholes, and together with a semi-autonomous logging platform to minimise risks around manual handling, delivers a multielement proxy-assay which can be utilised by the mine geology team to accurately domain the orebodies. Logistically, the combination of a specially designed tool and semi-autonomous truck are the way forward for a safer and more data-robust blasthole sampling practice. The method utilises a neutrongenerating geophysical tool and linked elemental spectroscopy sensor, which measures the response of the material surrounding an open hole. This delivers results at submetre intervals. These results are then utilised, similar to blasthole sample results, to map out areas within the blast pattern that are ‘ore’, ‘waste’, or ‘other suitable grade’. This paper outlines a project that has been in ‘proof of concept’ at selected Fortescue sites over the last few years with testing of these tools carried out on reverse circulation (RC), diamond drill and blastholes. The method is now being implemented at operational hematite mine sites. Fundamentally, the method adds more than enough value to justify its implementation. The aim is that these learnings will enable the greater industry to adapt, implement and improve their mining practices. Ultimately, the outcome will be greater value in mining for the industry by having a larger volume of good quality data to make reliable decisions on material movements, minimising ore-loss and dilution, and maximising the value of our current and future orebodies.

The steel industry continues to explore and demonstrate technologies that decrease its greenhouse gas emissions, especially in blast furnace ironmaking where alternate operating conditions will be required. As the furnace has been optimised over many years, it is approaching the minimum fuel rate possible with coke and Pulverised Coal Injection (PCI). Alternative operating conditions are therefore required to further decrease greenhouse gas emissions. Because of this, hydrogen has been proposed as a reducing agent in the blast furnace. Injection of hydrogen through the tuyeres was assessed using a comprehensive 2D blast furnace global model. The model was calibrated to a blast furnace operating with PCI as a base case and various approaches to hydrogen injection assessed, with a particular focus on displacing PCI. The maximum hydrogen injection rate of 19.5 kg H2 per tonne of hot metal was predicted, limited by decreases in the raceway adiabatic flame temperature and top gas temperature. Internal blast furnace conditions, such as gas composition and reduction degree were also predicted. Holistic analysis was performed to estimate the effectiveness of hydrogen injection on reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Based on these results, the changes in blast furnace operation and emissions under hydrogen injection are discussed.

The Xitieshan lead-zinc deposit is located in the north margin of the Qaidam Basin, Qinghai Province, China. It is one of the largest massive sulfide deposits in China and is supposed to be of the sedimentation-exhalation (SEDEX) type. Based on the main ore mineral and sulfur isotopic compositions in sulfides found in the wall rock, the S of the deposit is considered to originate from the mantle, but the fluid potentially mixed with sea water during the hydrothermal circulation exchange. The study of lead isotopes shows that the metallogenic material is characterised by the mixture of orogenic and upper crust sources. The lead isotopic signature of the wall rock is similar to that of the ore, which shows synsedimentary characteristics. According to the composition of the rubidium and strontium isotopic signature, the value of 87Sr/86Sr is lower than the average value of that in the crustal rock, which is larger than that of the mantle. Hence, the metallogenic materials of this deposit mainly originate from the crust, which is related to materials of volcanic rocks activation and migration of the deep hot circulating water. The process of the metallogenic fluid circulation shows continuous interaction with crustal material and lead to continuous enrichment of the ore forming fluids. From the study of the fluid inclusion microthermometry of the ore and the associated minerals combined with the C, H-O, Si isotopes, it is believed that the metallogenic fluid is mainly coming from the mantle or the deep magma chambers. The rising deep fluid then mixes with the sea water. The carbon dioxide escaping and mixing with sea water during the hydrothermal exhalation process leads to the rapid precipitation of the hydrothermal fluid to deposit metal. That is proposed as the principal formation mechanism of the Xitieshan deposit. Magnetite ores can be used to produce very high-grade concentrates that are suitable feed for the direct reduction process route but the high sulfur content of some concentrates can cause substantial environmental issues. Processing of high sulfur magnetite ore is therefore increasingly problematic for the industry. Generally, the industry demands a concentrate with <0.05 per cent sulfur and <2 per cent silica. This paper reports the outcomes of a study to produce a concentrate with the requisite low sulfur content from a sulfur-rich magnetite ore. The main findings may be summarised as follows: if the sulfur is present in magnetite as nonmagnetic pyrrhotite or pyrite, it can be beneficiated using magnetic separation and hence, monoclinic pyrrhotite is magnetic and is magnetically recovered with magnetite leading to a concentrate that is too high in sulfur. X-ray diffraction and QEMSCAN analyses revealed that the magnetite concentrate was liberated at P80 30 microns and was associated with maghemite, pyrrhotite (magnetic), carbonates and hematite with very low amounts of chalcopyrite, sphalerite and arsenopyrite. Sulfur removal using flotation was the first stage of investigation and this required flash flotation in the grinding stage followed by column flotation of the initial concentrate to generate the final concentrate. At the same time, it was observed that oxidation of the pyrrhotite had a negative effect on its flotation requiring copper sulfate to activate it. Bioleaching and concentrate leaching were also considered and achieved over 90 per cent sulfur removal but were deemed unsuitable owing to the production of highly reactive wastes and high CAPEX. Reference is made to a number of operating magnetite producers and how they manage the sulfur in feed.

The M2 Upgrade Project involved widening 15 km of the existing M2 Motorway, which is a key route in Sydney’s road network. The Norfolk Twin Tunnels in North Epping convey traffic over a 460 m length of the motorway. The project involved widening the twin tunnels to provide a third lane and breakdown lane in each direction.The widening of the tunnels was fundamentally different to other ‘greenfield’ tunnel projects in that the operation of the tunnel was maintained throughout construction, with motorway traffic permitted close to the excavation faces on a daily basis. The widened works had to integrate with the existing tunnel support, construction details, and mechanical and electrical infrastructure.The existing tunnel afforded the opportunity to review existing ground conditions in the tunnel. Exposures were mapped within the tunnel, and key design parameters were back-analysed from the original monitoring data to provide increased confidence in the assessed impact from the widening works.Traffic capacity of the tunnels was maintained by detailed staging of the works, and included the ability to reopen the tunnels at short notice.A permit to tunnel system was developed to manage the risks associated with re-opening the tunnel to traffic. A comprehensive suite of instrumentation was maintained to provide reliable monitoring data to support this process. Emphasis on the robustness and reliability of tunnel instrumentation provided increased confidence in the adequacy of the tunnel support being installed. The engineering properties of soils and tailings often exhibit significant anisotropy. One area where this has been well documents is undrained shear strength. Materials sheared in directions close to the principal stress direction in situ, i.e. triaxial compression, typically exhibit higher undrained strengths than those sheared in other directions such as simple shear. Importantly, along the most common critical failure surfaces relevant to tailings stability, whether primarily through tailings or a critical foundation layer, saturated materials are generally much closer to the simple shear loading direction than triaxial compression. Therefore, testing undrained shear strength of tailings or foundation soils in triaxial compression is likely to result in overestimation of the relevant strengths for design. Although these issues have repeatedly documented in the geotechnical literature for over three decades, they are not appreciated sufficiently across our industry. In an attempt to address and highlight these issues, a review is carried out of historical reference to the importance of simple shear loading. Attention is then drawn to the techniques applied in three recent post-failure investigations, where simple shear testing was applied. For any resource evaluation program, the collection and processing of representative samples for assaying is critical. Sampling, sample preparation and assay protocols must be designed to suit the style of orebody in question. The a priori need is for the characterisation of mineralisation type(s) and domain definition. The proportion and size of gold particles has a direct impact on the effectiveness of sampling protocols employed. Mineralogical studies focusing on gold particle deportment, size and distribution are required. Key issues are the presence of gold particle clustering and proportion of coarse versus fine gold. High-resolution X-ray computed tomography (HRXCT) is a radiographic technique that produces high-resolution 3D computerised models of in situ objects based on density distribution. The ævirtualÆ specimens are made up of voxels, the 3D equivalent of pixels each assigned a grey value based on X-ray absorption. This paper presents the results of recent research on the imaging of in situ particles in coarse gold-bearing ore samples from the Nalunaq mine, southern Greenland. The samples used were previously well-characterised through mineralogical and metallurgical testing, and serve to test the HRXCT methodology. The Beta Hunt orebody is situated on the south western limb of the Kambalda dome. It is one of the nickel occurrences in the area which fall into the category of æKambalda Style OrebodiesÆ. These orebodies are renowned as being continuous uniformly mineralised ribbons of nickel sulfide mineralisation. Interestingly, Beta Hunt does not conform to this notion of continuity and uniformity and is in fact highly irregular in its ore distribution due largely to the influence of post depositional structure. In an attempt to understand the ore distribution at delineation stage rather than development stage a detailed footwall topography model is created using all available drilling data. To augment this drilling data, the routine use of downhole EM and borehole radar has been introduced to provide data beyond the confines of the drill core to enhance the geological interpretation of the footwall topography and the distribution of the mineralisation. The implementation of a detailed footwall model and the use of downhole geophysics has proved to be very effective in resolving the orebody complexity issues. Ongoing development of the methods used will continue to refine the interpretation of the geology to enable more efficient extraction of the orebody.

Through the stress synthesis of many examples of macrostructure in the middle of China, it can be concluded that in the middle of Chinesetectonics there are two compression-torsion-forces, one of which ( from NW to SE ) came from the northwest side of Aerjinshan abyssal and giant fault("F1A", see Fig.7,8,9 ); the other (from S to N ) came from the south side of the north piedmontal fault of Kunlunshan-the south piedmontal fault of Qinlingshan ("F2K-F2Q", see Fig-7,829 ).Owing to the two compression torsion forces a new special type of structure named rotation-apart structure occurred from Chaidamu basin to Hebai, Henan, Anhui plain,from Caledonian movement, Hercynian movement,Yenshan movement to Himalayan movement, step by step In the north of Qilianshan during the late Caledonian movement: during the Hercynian movement it extended into a vast area including the Chaidamu basin and Eerduosi basin; during the Yenshan movement it spread over the whole area of Helanshan,Eerduosi basin and Hebai , Henan, Anhui plain. In the period of Himalayan movement all these structures revived .The rotation-apart structure controlled the distribution of all mineral deposits and also were the mineralizing structures.The relation between these rotation-apart structure and earthquakes is very close.

Open pit operators are facing a number of challenges in the area of blasting and blasting processes, such as wall control, quality of fragmentation, explosives consumption and vibration. Remaining financially viable is one of the most significant objectives for mining professionals as they work through the blasting challenges within the mining chain of processes. This objective is such a significant challenge, primarily due to the high consumption of materials and the direct consequences on the downstream processes in the mining work flow, including loading, hauling, crushing, milling and mineral concentration. This paper reviews and discusses a technique to achieve this objective, namely air-decking. The performance in a number of mines around the world is reviewed focusing on the economic contributions of air-deck blasting. Various scenarios are investigated and simulated, covering both conventional and air-deck blasting, using JKSimblast software. The scenarios explore a range of issues and found that optimum results could be achieved with a minimum amount of explosives. The results obtained from the simulations were verified with blasts at Rixs Creek Coal Mine, Australia. Based on the verification results the simulations were then modified to more accurately model the actual conditions and parameters on site and to ensure that the models derived meet the production and control requirements at the mine site. Ultimately, overall analysis and comparisons were applied to the outcomes of the conventional and air-decking blasts revealing a reduction in material consumption of around 25 per cent with consequential savings and up to a 30 per cent reduction in ground vibration.CITATION:Abdalla, M A, Laing, T and Hagan, P, 2012. PasmincoÆs Century Concentrator in North West Queensland commenced operations in November 1999. The nameplate production capacity of 500 000 tpa of zinc metal production in concentrate was achieved in August 2002. Completion of the production ramp up was successful due to the culmination of a number of initiatives throughout 2001 and 2002. Mine to mill interaction to understand and eliminate head grade related bottlenecks affecting Concentrator production and reduce feed variation. Grinding circuit process development û operating and process control strategies to improve stability and reduce grind size to support zinc recovery. Pumping upgrades to control spillage in ultrafine zinc flotation Low density zinc flotation strategy û to improve silica-sphalerite separation to improve zinc recovery while maintaining acceptable silica in final concentrate. Flotation circuit process development û froth crowders, froth cameras and reagent control strategies to improve primary zinc flotation performance. Review and implementation of longer campaigns between planned shutdowns to improve availability. Team reorganisation û to improve setting and implementation of metallurgical strategies. This paper describes these initiatives and their contribution in achieving the production target. It also notes the ball mill motor failures that delayed the successful achievement of the ramp up, and CenturyÆs response to minimise the production impact. The paper also outlines the capital improvement program that was implemented to improve zinc recovery to design 82.5 per cent recovery once the production rate had been achieved.

The general structural features and the principal mineral relationships of the Black Star ore body, Mount Isa, Queensland, have been described in several previously published papers. But particular reference may be made to the work of Grondijs and Schouten, whose examination of over 200 polished sections revealed some remarkable features in the process of ore deposition. The observations by the present authors are based upon the study of a smaller &#183;set of specimens complementary to those examined by Grondijs and Schouten and are intended to elaborate certain aspects of the mineral relationships, more particularly those affecting the ore-dressing processes.The work described applies to the primary sulphide ore only, and to the present milling practice of fine-grinding and selective flotation.GEOLOGICAL FEATURESThe Black Star is one of several economic mineral concentrations in the Mount Isa series of thinly bedded carbonaceous shales, which are considered to be of preCambrian age. The nlineralization is apparently connected with pegmatite intrustions located within some miles of the ore bodies, and has been Gontrolled in the main by major folding of the shales and by a shear system which follows approximately the strike and dip of the beds. To finalise the arrangement and details of the headframe to be erected over the new No. 3 Shaft, the haulage and winding equipment requirements were first determined, then tentative designs were prepared to cover the needs of general shaft servicing work for men and materials, mullock and ore handling, and the probable requirements of a breaker station to be built adjacent to the headframe, which would provide for the crushing of the run-of-mine ore down to a size which would be suitable for feeding on to the concentrating mill.

Underground coal mines in Australia have embraced the use of various inertisation techniques both proactively and reactively. The use of such techniques can have a significant influence on ratios and trends used to monitor the status of the underground environment. Whilst control strategies should never be ignored in favour of preserving the integrity of ratios, the influence and significance of the changes likely to be seen should be anticipated and understood for reliable interpretation of the situation. Much of our knowledge of the behaviour of underground coal dust explosions has been derived from less than full-scale experimental explosions in facilities as small as 0.25 m diameter pipes. Although a substantial body of research has been undertaken in larger galleries approaching the size of full-scale modern mine roadways, there are still questions regarding the scaling of results to full-sized roadways in modern coalmines. Questions also surround the issue of comparing or scaling results between smooth and rough walled galleries, round and rectangular galleries and galleries with differing wall thermal properties due to different materials of construction.This paper will examine the influence of gallery size, cross-section area and wall roughness and thermal properties upon the characteristics of a coal dust explosion. Mining geologists utilise many technologies to map, sample, measure, model and plan before and during the mining process. Predicted ore quality rarely corresponds with feed quality determined by process operators. Objectively measuring conveyed material quality accurately in real time avoids disagreements over mined ore quality and generates opportunities to improve mill feed quality.This paper discusses the well proven PGNAA (prompt gamma neutron activation analysis) technology used in the GEOSCAN-M elemental analyser that is ideally suited to measuring composition of primary crushed conveyed material in real time. Representative, continuous, fully penetrative measurements are unaffected by particle size, belt speed, mineralogy, dust or layering on the conveyor. Material can be directed to processes or stockpiles by utilising measurement increments of typically one to five minutes and then activating diverters to direct increments to the correct location. Waste, low-grade or deleterious material can be rejected to waste dumps or stockpiled for later processing. Material meeting a product specification can bypass unnecessary processing. Paybacks in weeks have been achieved for such applications. Process operators are able to control the blend of ores fed into the mill to improve processing performance and use measurements for ore reconciliation and metal accounting. Utilising the technology to upgrade ore quality after mining and before processing is beneficial in improving plant economics.The technology has been successfully utilised in base metals, ferrous metals and industrial minerals. Mining geologists can determine ore quality being produced in real time and modify the ore quality prior to milling. Ore feed quality measurements are also used by process operators in optimising plant performance. The elemental content can help identify geometallurgical domains as well as other major changes in quality, which may affect processing. The Cadjebut Mine is located 80 km southeast of Fitzroy Crossing. Cadjebut is owned 58 per cent by BHP Minerals and 42 per cent by Billiton Australia. Cadjebut is a &apos;Mississippi Valley Type&apos; (MVT) deposit. Minerals present are sphalerite, galena and marcasite in a sedimentary host of dolomite and siltstone. The ore contains few deleterious impurities and no silver. The mill was commissioned in the first half of 1988 at a rate of 320 000 tonnes per annum. An expansion in the latter half of 1989 has since increased production to 550 000 tonnes per annum. The initial geological resource at the commencement of mining was 3.8 million tonnes at 13.5 per cent Zn and 4.4 per cent Pb. There is sufficient ore left to sustain operations to 1995 at a grade of 11.2 per cent Zn and 3.9 per cent Pb. The ore from underground is stockpiled on the surface via a drift conveyor and from the stockpile is fed into a grinding circuit consisting of a SAG and ball mill. Cyclone overflow at a Pgp of 90 pm gravitates to the flotation circuit. Lead and zinc are sequentially floated to produce an 80 per cent Pb grade at 90 per cent recovery and a 61 - 62 per cent Zn grade at 96 per cent recovery. The concentrates are thickened and filtered before being trucked to the port of Wyndham 600 km away. From Wyndham the concentrates are shipped to smelters in Asia, Europe and Australia.
