The operation of gas-condensate fields is comparatively new and involves physical principles with which the industry was not prcviously familiar. It has been necessary to devise methods for testing gas-condensate wells and to correlate laboratory and field data. In this paper new methods are advanced for interpreting well G.P.M.† tests whereby dilution by dry gas can be estimated and information supplied on revaporization of condensates by dry gas. Inaccuracies in well test data are discussed. Changes in flow rates can cause changes in the G.P.M. of the effluent and it may take some time for a well to become stabilized after an important change in flow rate. Retrograde tests as usually conducted cannot be directly compared with field G.P.M. data, because the retrograde tests usually include solution gas in the condensates, which are reported On the cumulative basis whereas field data (G.P.M.) usually report pentaneS PlUS on a rate or instantaneous basis. Introduction Though long known to physicists, the phenomena Of retrograde condensation became known to the oil and gas industry Only in recent years, when deeper drilling disclosed that the behavior of vapors under changing pressures was different in high-pressure reservoirs than under the low-pressure operations with which the industry was familiar. These deep, high-pressure reservoirs in which condensation and vaporization behaved inversely to the accustomed manner became known as "gas-distillate," or preferably "gas-condensate" fields. Partly to prevent precipitation and retention of liquids in the reservoir, but still more to prevent the waste of residue gas, the operation known as "recycling," or preferably "cycling," was instituted, in which the residue gas is reinjected into the reservoir, thus maintaining pressure and driving the wet gas to the producing wells. For lack of field experience to serve as a guide, the industry had to assume that theory and laboratory experiments could accurately forecast retrograde behaviors in operating these gas-condensate fields, but it is obvious that these assumptions should be checked at the first opportunities against actual field experience. To make such checks, it is necessary to accumulate a large quantity of reliable field data, but experience has shown that it is difficult to obtain reliable field data and that the laboratory data as usually presented are not in directly comparable form. The problems of correlation involve the complex phase behavior on the one hand, and a knowledge of field data and a visualization of underground conditions on the other hand. This paper is an approach from field experience, The purposes of this article are to discuss the sources of uncertainty in the data and to present methods of analyzing, interpreting and correlating laboratory and field data. Data mostly from lower Gulf Coast fields are presented, from which some conclusions can be derived, but better data from more sources than those available to the writer will be required before satisfactory answers to many questions can be obtained. This paper is presented to stimulate the analysis and publication of data from other fields, the reexamination of field and laboratory methods, and the taking of more complete and reliable field tests. For these purposes, the writer presents some speculations that otherwise would not be appropriate.

The laboratory batch and continuous flotation pilot plant tests demonstrated the technical feasibility of recovering high grade mica concentrates from weathered mica pegmatite ores of Alabama and Georgia. The research indicated that combinations of anionic and cationic collectors may be used effectively for flotation of fine size mica from weathered pegmatite ores. In continuous tests, concentrates containing 98.5% mica were obtained from the Georgia pegmatite ore; the Alabama pegmatite ore concentrates contained 98.4% mica. The recoveries were 91 and 89% respectively. INTRODUCTION The principal uses of fine ground mica are as a filler in wallboard joint cement, as a filler and surface coating for roofing, as an ingredient in paints, and in oil well drilling mud. The mineral has other uses in the manufacture of rubber, wallpaper, plastics, welding rods, electric insulation, house insulation, and textiles, and as an annealing agent in metal treatment. In recent years, more than 99% of the domestic mica produced has been scrap and flake mica (mica which does not meet specifications for sheet mica and is used for producing fine ground mica). There has been a continued increase in mica production for several years, the 1963 production of scrap and flake mica totaling 117,251 tons.1 Ground mica is obtained primarily by crushing and milling pegmatites and schists. To a lesser extent, mica is produced as a byproduct of kaolin washing and feldspar and spodumene flotation operations. The processes used in recovering mica by crushing and milling pegmatites are generally simple, consisting of various combinations of alternate roll crushers and trommel screens that separate the mica and gangue at screen sizes coarser than 6-mesh. As these processes are designed to recover only coarse mica, high losses in the plant rejects are common. Large tonnages of tailings from the crushing and screening plants have been accumulated in a number of areas. Methods for treating such products were developed by the Bureau of Mines in 1941,2 but have not been generally applied. More recently, mica flotation research has been completed and published by the Bureau of Mines.3 These methods required complete removal of 150- to 200-mesh materials from the flotation feed with consequent fine mica losses. Later, the Bureau of. Mines investigated methods for-recovering fine size mica from pegmatite ores after desliming sufficiently to remove clay materials, but not so drastically as to remove the fine sands. This report summarizes the results of these studies. The process developed was effective on pegmatite ores from two locations and should be applicable to the commercial treatment of other mica-bearing pegmatite ores and fine rejects that have been accumulated at various mica-milling operations. DESCRIPTION OF ORES The ores used in the investigation were obtained from the Dixie Mines, Inc., Heflin, Alabama, and the Ruberoid Corporation, Hartwell, Georgia. The sample from Alabama contained muscovite and quartz, with a high percentage of clay, and minor amounts of biotite, kaolin, limonite and tourmaline. The mica in the ore was essentially all minus 4-mesh in size and was free of attached mineral grains. The Georgia sample contained muscovite and quartz, with minor amounts of biotite, kaolin, and limonite. The mica in the ore, which was essentially all minus 4-mesh, was liberated. Petrographic analyses of the two samples are given in Table I. THE ANIONIC-CATIONIC MICA FLOTATION METHOD Previous investigators2,3 have reported that complete desliming of mica ores at 150- to 200-mesh was required prior to flotation with cationic collectors to obtain satisfactory selective separation of the mica from the other mineral components. Numerous tests were made at the Tuscaloosa Metallurgy Research Center to determine if some reagent combination could be used to selectively float finer size mica without complete desliming. THERMAL expansion coefficients of a uranium were originally reported' on the basis of X-ray diffraction measurement of lattice constants at 25°, 300°, and 650°C. These data have been reproduced by Katz and Rabinowitch.' CuK radiation had been used in this work, with consequent crowding of the patterns. Considerable overlap of the back-reflection lines was observed as the temperature was raised. Subsequent reexamination of the data led to the conclusion that errors had resulted from failure to obtain unequivocal indexing of the high angle reflections at elevated temperatures. The measurements have been repeated, using FeK radiation, which provided sufficient dispersion to assure proper indexing of the reflections, at each temperature level. The unit cell dimensions were re-determined at ten temperatures, from 25" to 650°C. Schuch and Laquer easured the macroscopic contraction from room temperature down to —253°C, and reported a negative value from —210" to —253°C; they suggested the possibility of the occurrence of a phase change. In the present work, the lattice constants of uranium have been measured down to —253°C, to test this hypothesis. Filings were prepared from a single piece of pure uranium bar stock. They were carefully cleaned with a magnet and pickled in nitric acid to remove traces of iron from the file. They were then annealed at 600°C in a sealed evacuated silica tube. The annealed filings were pickled in strong nitric acid to remove any oxide layer, washed in water and alcohol, quickly dried, and sealed in evacuated thin-walled silica capillary tubes. If properly sealed, the sample could be heated to the a-ß transforination temperature without significant buildup of the diffraction pattern of oxide. The high temperature X-ray diffraction camera was modified from the design of Hume-Rothery and Reynolds.' The thermocouple used to record the specimen temperature was calibrated from lattice-constant measurements of a standard silver specimen, using the Hume-Rothery and Reynolds values for silver over the temperature range from 25" to 700°C. Temperatures were reproducible to 210°C. Temperatures to —210°C were attained by passing precooled gas over the sample. THE physical properties of oil-producing sands, such as grain size, porosity, and permeability, are becoming more and more important in petroleum production engineering as oil fields are being repressured and rejuvenated. A number of excellent papers have been published recently on all three of these properties. Faucher, Lewis and Barnes1 give a com-plete survey of the work done through 1932 and contribute also much information on sands that they themselves have examined. Muskat and Botset,2 Wykoff, Botset, Muskat and Reed,3 Hurst,4 and Muskat5 have contributed a great deal to the theory and actual measurement of flow of liquids and gases through porous media. Muskat and Botset have measured the permeabilities of different sands with gases and liquids. They find that the radial is always slightly under the linear permeability. However, in most of the previous experiments small samples of the sand were used, and the method of production of fluid or gas through the sands has not been very close to actual oil-field conditions. In addition, so far as the authors are aware, no measurements of linear and radial permeabilities have been made simultaneously under exactly the same conditions. The multiple permeability apparatus described here is a part of the equipment being acquired by this laboratory for thorough investigation of the physical properties of producing sands. It possesses certain advantages for comparative studies of liquid flow. Additional data and descriptions of other instruments will follow in papers to be written later on. The essential features of the permeability apparatus are as follows:

A combined process of segregation roasting-flota-tion or magnetic separation was developed to recover nickel from lateritic iron ores and oxidized nickel ores. An ore was mixed with a halide, such as sodium or calcium chloride, and a solid reductant, and roasted, whereby the nickel content was segregated out as discrete metallic particles. Either by magnetic separation, or by flotation using a sulfhydryl collector together with a heavy metal salt as an activator, the metallic nickel could be concentrated, Effects of such variables as the types and amounts of the halide and solid reductant addition and of the roasting conditions were extensively investigated. The concentration results on several types of ores from Japan, the Philippines, and New Caledonia are presented. Laterite is a residual product of rock decay in tropical and subtropical regions, and consists mainly of hydrated oxides of iron and alumina. Those derived from serpentine sometimes become enriched in nickel, cobalt, and chromium contents. Oxidized nickel ores are of the similar origin, but their nickel as well as silica contents are higher due to gamierite-type silicates. Apparently, nickel enrichment is more pronounced in the transition region between the surface layer of iron laterite and the underlying serpentine. Iron laterites often contain over 50% iron, and their reserve is reported to exceed 22 billion tons, corresponding approximately to 20% of the world iron ore reserve.1 It is readily apparent, therefore, why the iron laterites have attracted much attention of the steel industry as a potential source of iron ores. Numerous attempts to remove nickel and chromium as byproducts, have been reported in literature.' Worldwide discoveries of high-grade iron ore deposits in recent years have inevitably lessened the interests in iron laterites. However, in view of the tremendous potential for their gross value and supplies of nickel, cobalt, chromium, and alumina along with iron, the problem remains as a challenge. Much of the chromium in laterites is present in the form of relatively coarse particles of chromite, and various classification methods have successfully been applied for its removal.2,3 The nickel, however, is intimately associated with limonite, and ordinary concentration techniques are totally ineffective. Much attention has, therefore, been given to hydro-metallurgical or pyrometallurgical means. Yet, all the known processes appear to have limitations either economically or for the use of products as iron raw materials due to a high residual content of nickel. Some attempts have been made to pre-roast laterites or oxidized nickel ores, particularly with sulfidizing agents, and to remove nickel either by magnetic separation,' or by flotation.4 It is apparent that any such concentration process would require grain growth of nickel during roasting for effective separation. Oxidized copper ores are reported to be concentrated by the segregation roasting-flotation process,5 in which the ores are roasted with a chloridizing agent and a carbonaceous reductant in order to promote the growth of metallic copper through repeated cycles of copper chloride volatilization and its reduction on the solid reductant surfaces. Examination of a vapor pressure-temperature diagram of various metal chlorides indicates that a separation of nickel from iron may be effected by a similar process. In fact, the segregation roasting of laterites was reported to increase the extraction of nickel by the ammonia leach process, as compared to the ordinary reduction roasting.6 In the present article some of the preliminary experimental results of the segregation roasting, followed by either flotation or magnetic separation, on laterites and oxidized nickel ores are reported. The effects of various parameters in the roasting as well as in the concentration steps are discussed. At the Tenth International Geological Congress, Mexico, 1906, Waldemar Lindgren presented "The Relation of Ore Deposition to Physical Conditions." Retrospect ranks it as the outstanding offering at that Session and as the most fundamental contribution up to that date on the philosophy of ore deposition. Elaborating thereon in his text-book "Mineral Deposits," Lindgren analyzed ore-forming processes under conditions prevailing from great depth up to surface; explained the nature of deposition in each environment; and developed a comprehensive genetic ore classification, which brought wide acceptance and enriching contributions by many. Since Lindgren's latest edition (1933), have come wealths of material relevant to ore genesis, particularly through amazing renaissance and proliferation throughout science. Current publication regarding ores now emanates largely from a generation caught in pressures of the breathless modern tempo, which tempts scant reflection upon earlier truths. Consequently, today's thrilling output contains not a few offerings that need challenge because supplanting interrelationship and system by what seems, collectively, an assemblage of strange, ad hoc and often self-contradictory concepts. From these latter some merit may eventuate but at the probable cost of present confusion and delayed progress. The following pages, naming numerous post-Lindgren advances, record the conviction, held by many, that Lindgren's philosophy, progressively improved, remains the soundest approach to understanding ore genesis.

Approximately two years ago the authors obtained data that indicated that initial precipitation could not be detected by change of lattice parameter in the aluminum-rich aluminum-magnesium alloys. Some of these data were first published in a brief note in Mining and Metallurgy'. Cast specimens were used at that time and they showed initial precipitation relatively sooner than sheet material of the same composition. For this reason a more thorough investigation has been carried out using a homogenized aluminum-magnesium sheet corltairling approximately 10 per cent magnesium. Materials.—The aluminum used in the preparation of the aluminum-magnesium alloy was of high purity, containing less than 0.01 per cent each of iron, silicon and copper. The magnesium was high-purity sublimed magnesium. Preparation of Alloy.—Approximately 4 kg. of the aluminunl was melted in a plumbago crucible in an electric furnace and the magnesium was added. The melt was thoroughly stirred with a graphite rod and fluxed with chlorine gas before casting. The alloy was cast in the form of a sheet ingot in a cold iron tilting mold (approximately 200 by 165 by 40 mm.) and into small chill-cast slabs for chemical analysis (75 by 40 by 5 mm.). The chemical analyses were made upon drillings from the analysis slabs. The analytical methods were those described in "Chemical Analysis of Aluminum," published by the Aluminum Company of America. The composition of the alloy was found to be: magnesium 10.30, silicon 0.013, iron 0.008 and copper 0.005 per cent. In order to insure homogeneity the alloy was given two intermediate anneals at 430' C. for a total time of 36 hr. The ingot was hot-rolled

A description is given of a double heat treatment of 60-40 brass. Photomicrographs are included to show the changes that take place in the microstructure on reheating the water-quenched specimens. A wide variation in the mechanical properties may be obtained by the described heat-treatment method. ON SEVERAL occasions, when 60-40 brass is first obtained in the beta condition by quenching at about 825° C. and is then reheated, the writers have noticed that recrystallization will take place in the form of twin crystals at the grain boundaries of the original beta crystals. It was, therefore, thought that interesting results would be obtained if this twinning process was studied further, especially as to the temperature at which it first occurs. The material used in the investigation was a bar of extruded muntz metal, 1/2 in. in diameter, and of the following composition: Copper, 60.21 per cent.; zinc, 39.73 per cent.; lead, trace; iron, trace; tin, nil. Specimens I in. in length were sawed from this bar and a hole was drilled into the side of each specimen until it reached the center, and the tip of a platinum-platinum rhodium thermocouple was inserted. A small Hoskins' resistance-type electric furnace was used for heating the specimens. The specimens were first heated at 840°C. for 2 hr. and then quenched in cold water, in order to get the material entirely in the beta state. In every case, in the reheating process, the furnace was brought to the desired temperature before the specimen was introduced. The time occupied in preheating was from 20 to 30 min. By sawing back 1/4 in. on each side of the hole, two parts were obtained from each specimen

THIS investigation was undertaken to determine, if possible, the relation between static and dynamic tensile tests as measured by the work required to break test specimens slowly, in a tensile testing machine, and rapidly, by means of a falling weight. A preliminary investigation was made to determine the time required to attain equilibrium within the equilibrium cell for this system. Experimental and smoothed data are presented for the solubility of ethane in water for temperatures of 100°, 160°, 220°, 280" and 340 °F at pressures to 10.000 psia. The minimum solubility phenomenon disappears at 10,000 psia within this temperature range. INTRODUCTION .is a continuation of the investigation of the behavior of hydrocarbon-water systems, the experimental data on the solubility of ethane in water have been extended to 10,000 psia. Although extensive pole figure studies have been reported by Brick1 and others2,3 showing preferred orientations in rolled and annealed 70-30 alpha brass, and by Hermann and Sachs4 in 70-30 alpha brass cups, comparatively little information has been published on textures in drawn 70-30 alpha brass tubes. Crampton5 reported a (110) , [111] texture in drawn brass tubes based on selected individual X ray photograms following the method of Norton and Hiller,6 but the extent and ease of developing this texture and the annealing texture have not been reported and pole figures of these structures were not found in the literature. The present investigation was further stimulated by the possible influence of textures on the mercury stress-corrosion cracking of brass tubes. According to Snoek,7 iron-nickel alloy sheet with a strong cubic texture was more resistant to corrosion than a randomly oriented sheet. Crampton5 reported that single crystals of 70-30 alpha brass drawn into tubes did not crack after 24 hr in a standard mer-curous nitrate test. Edmunds12 found that single crystals of 70-30 alpha brass did not crack in a standard mercurous nitrate test but did crack when subjected to ammoniacal vapor. Wasserman11 reported a similar failure of a single crystal of brass in ammonia. A tube with a strong texture might approach single crystal behavior and tend to resist mercury cracking if the differences in orientation between adjacent grains were sufficiently slight. Preparation OF Specimens Crampton's5 tubes drawn 28 pct reduction in area developed a slight degree of preferred orientation while in tubes drawn 48 pct it was more marked. Based on this information, in order to obtain specimens with markedly different degrees of preferred orientation but with the same final draw, two sets of 70-30 alpha brass tubes were made following the mill schedules shown in Table I. The final draw involved a large reduction in outside diameter, and a ratio of reduction in area to reduction in outside diameter similar to that reported by Crampton,5, 10 to cause mercury cracking of brass tubes. The brass contained 71.31 pct copper, 0.01 pct lead, 0.01 pct iron and zinc by difference. Determination of Pole Figures A 6-in. length from each tube was rotated rapidly by an electric stirrer in 25 pct nitric acid until the gauge was reduced to 0.003-0.005 in. The tubes were carefully cut longitudinally and the walls gently flattened. They were further etched in 25 pet nitric acid to 0.0015 in. thickness and (111) pole figures were determined using copper K-alpha radiation in the manner described by Brick.' (communication to the Secretary*):—Mr. Blake's recent paper upon this topic undoubtedly partly explains the rationale of a part of the known facts bearing upon discolorat'ion and encrustation of rocks. His quotation from Humboldt, with reference to certain South American examples, may be questioned in the light of further facts, which do not appear to bear out the great traveler's theory of causation. There is no available evidence that the waters of the tropical rivers referred to by Professor Blake contain dissolved organic matter in the varying proportions required to demonstrate Humboldt's guess, nor do the concomitant facts in any manner bear out the hypothesis that the blackening in one case and its absence in the other may, perhaps, be traced to differences in the chemical reactions of the respective waters. Careful consideration of Professor Blake's illustrations, in connection with numerous personal observations extending over widely-scattered areas, convinces me that elements of

OPENING of numerous stripping operations in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and other districts, particularly outside the Middle West and Southwest where the large-scale stripping mines predominate, holds the limelight for the year 1940. Several factors are responsible for this expansion. One is the scarcity of untested and undeveloped properties in this central field. Another has been the development of earth-moving and preparation equipment suitable for these smaller tonnage tracts. Draglines of the Walker type, small long-range .hovels, and large-capacity tractor- drawn scrapers have to be considered. Wash boxes, designed for light tonnages, costing a few thousand dollars, have made their contribution.

CURRENT production of petroleum on such a vast scale presents many interesting problems- the solutions of which are important not only to those directly interested in the business, but to the nation as a whole. The industry is relatively young. Until the discovers of the Lucas gusher at Spindletop in 1901 petroleum production had not exceeded 60,000,000 bbl. per year compared with 1,100,000,000 bbl. in 1936. In 36 years then, the modern oil business, production, transportation, refining, and marketing has developed. I will first present a brief history. of oil production as a background for consideration of the present situation.

Sparry dolomite from all of the operating mines in the Viburnum Trend of Southeast Missouri have been found by cathodoluminescence microscopy to reveal a systematic pattern of banding resulting from a growth zoning within individual dolomite rhombs. Four principal bands have been recognized throughout the entire Trend and each of the major bands contain even finer internal banding. Minor bands a few microns in width can be correlated in specimens collected ten's of kilometers apart along the trend. The first three principal dolomite bands decrease from south to north. This feature, together with the fact that the white sparry dolomite crystals decrease in abundance from south to north in the Trend, suggests that a major source for the fluids was from the south. The application of cathodoluminescence microscopy to crystalline dolomite demonstrates a strong correlation between ore grade and the intensity of internal banding and dissolution textures.
