THE EL TIGRE MINE is a highgrade silver and gold producer located in the northern part of Sonora, Mexico. It has been worked continuously since 1903, producing 50,000.000 oz. of silver and returning handsome dividends. During 1930 and 1931 falling silver prices compelled the Tigre company to make representations before the Department of Labor in Mexico City showing the necessity for drastic reductions in wages and personnel. The delays in obtaining permission from the Federal Labor Board to make these readjustments caused the company to suffer considerable financial loss during those years. After the reduction in operations was finally effected, the Sonora state government headed by Señor Francisco Elias (former Governor, now Secretary of Agriculture) and Señor Rodolfo Elias Calles (present Governor and eldest son of Señor Plutarco Elias Calles, recently Secretary of War and former President of Mexico) have cooperated with the company to make continued operation possible by revising downward certain state taxes that would have been a factor in forcing the closing of this mine. Also, permission to change our workmen over to another system of mining was essential to continued operation.

Preparation of pure scandium metal was accomplished by calcium reduction of the fluoride by two methods; a low-temperatzdre alloy process and direct reduction with subsequent distillation of the product. The following properties were determined: melting point: 1181OK; boiling point (calculated): 3000°K; lattice constants at 298°K (hexagonal lattice): a = 3.308 * 0.001 A, c = 5.267 * 0.003A; calculated density at 298°K, g per cm3: 2,990 + 0.007; electrical resistivity, ohm-cm: 299°K, 66.6 ± 0.2 x 10 -6; 373oK, 77.4 * 0.2 x 10 -6; thermal coefficient at 299°K, ohm-cm per deg: 5.4 X x; heat of sublimation at 298°K, kcal pel- mole: 80.79. The vapor pressure was determined as a function of temperature between 1505o and 1748°K, with the data fitted to a straight line shielding the equation: Log Pmm = -1.718 X 104/ToK + 8.298. SCANDIUM, element number 21, was first discovered by Nilson in 1879 and was recognized as the Ekaboron as predicted by Mendeleff. As it is in group III of the periodic table, the general properties are a little like aluminum and also resemble quite closely the properties of yttrium and the rare-earth metals, in both the metallic and ionic form. Although the earth's crust contains approximately 5 ppm of scandium (the element is as abundant as arsenic and twice as abundant as boron) it generally occurs so widely distributed that it has earned the reputation of being very rare. The one exception to this is the mineral thortveitite, which has been found in Madagascar (20 pct Sc2O3) and in Norway (35 pct Sc2O3). Scandium also occurs in small but distinct amounts in uranium and rare-earth ores; the recent larger scale processing of these materials has made some scandium available from these sources. As with other naturally-occurring monoisotopic elements (except Be), scandium contains an odd number of protons and an even number of neutrons. Scandium metal was first prepared by Fischer and coworkers1 in 1937 by electrolysis of scandium chloride in a molten eutectic mixture of lithium and potassium chlorides, using molten zinc as a cathode and collector of the scandium metal produced. The zinc was removed from the Zn-2 pct Sc alloy by vacuum distillation, leaving a product reported to be 94 to 98 pct Sc, with the main impurities being iron and silicon. They reported a melting point of 1400° C for this material. Scandium has also been prepared by the reduction of scandium chloride with potassium metal in a glass apparatus by Bommer and Hohmann in 1941,' resulting in a mixture of metal and potassium chloride; these workers did not isolate the metal proper, but the X-ray diffraction of the slag-metal mixture showed it to be hexagonal with a = 3.30A, c = 5.45A. petru3, 4 and coworkers have recently reported the preparation of the metal in a compact form by the reduction of either ScF3 or ScC13 with calcium metal and subsequent distillation of the product. This process probably yielded a metal of high purity, but they list no chemical analysis nor do they list any of the properties of their product. Previous related work in this Laboratory has been concerned with the production of yttrium and the rare-earth metals and the determination of their physical properties. Because of its similarity to these metals, scandium is being included in this study. PREPARATION OF SCANDIUM METAL The preparation of yttrium and the rare-earth metals may be accomplished by reduction of their fluorides with calcium metal in tantalum crucibles.5 This process leads to the introduction of tantalum (up to 0.5 pct) as an impurity in the higher melting rare earths, but since the tantalum occurs as dendrites, uncombined with the rare-earth metals, its presence is not objectionable in some cases. The preparation of scandium metal in this manner, however, was found to yield a product containing 2 to 5 pct Ta. To obtain a purer product, the following two methods were developed for the reduction of scandium fluoride with calcium metal: i) a low-temperature process utilizing zinc to form a low

Gap electroluminescent diodes have been prepared by the vapor phase diffusion of zinc into n-Gap crystals which were grown from a gallium solution (10 wt pct Gap) doped with tellurium and Ga203. A marked improvement in the efficiency of the red electrolumines -cence has been achieved by heat treatment after diffusion. External quantum efficiencies of diodes annealed under optimum conditions are 0.2 to 0.6 pct at room temperature, or about 200 times higher than the efficiencies of diodes quenched after diffusion. The optimum dopant concentrations in the gallium melt from which the crystals were grown are 3to6 x at. pct Te and 4 to 8 x 10-2 mol pct Ga203. The efficient diodes are characterized by linearly graded junctions with an i-layer 0.1 to 0.2u thick. Annealing increases the emission intensity by a factor of 20 to 50 and decreases the current density to 1/3 to 1/8 that of quenched diodes at a given bias. The decrease in current is attributed to an annihilation of deep recombination centers in the depletion layer. The increase in emission intensity is interpreted in terms of an increase in lifetime of minority carriers and an increase in the relative intensity of red-to-infrared emission. The dependence of these quantities on the tellurium and oxygen doping levels is also discussed. A number of studies have been made of the red light emission from for ward-biased Gap diodes.' At room temperature this emission band is centered at 7OOO? with a spectral width of nearly 1000?. Low-tempera-ture photoluminescence indicates that this emission is due to either the radiative annihilation of an exciton bound to a pair of zinc and oxygen atoms substituting on nearest neighbor lattice sites2,3 or the radiative recombination of an electron bound to this Zn-O pair with a hole bound to an isolated zinc shallow acceptor.3 An emission band is also observed with a spectral peak at 9800?. This infrared emission has been shown to be due to the recombination of an electron trapped at an isolated oxygen deep donor with a hole trapped at an isolated zinc acceptor.4 The red emission from Gap diodes is fairly efficient at room temperature because the nearest neighbor Zn-0 pair forms a deep electron trap at 0.3 to 0.4 ev below the edge of the conduction band.2'4 In diodes grown by liquid epitaxy an external quantum efficiency of 2.1 x 10-2 (photon/electron) has been attained by heat treatment at relatively low temperatures.5 This heat treatment was found to increase the efficiency by a factor of 3 to 6. However, no detailed studies have-been reported on the effects of heat treatment. We can only cite Onton and Lorenz's work6 on the change ; in the relative intensity of red-to-infrared emission. Heat treatment has also been tried on junctions built in during growth, but contrary to expectations the efficiency decreased. In-diffusion is a simple and controllable method of fabricating p-n junctions. For Gap, zinc is generally used to form a p-type layer on n-type crystals. The emission efficiencies of in-diffused diodes are, however, extremely low in comparison with liquid epitaxial diodes.' Although efficiencies as high as 2 x 1O-3 have been reported, values from 10-6 to 10-4 are generally obtained by typical diffusion techniques. Out-diffused diodes are known to be a little more efficient than in-diffused diodes. Nevertheless, the quantum efficiency is at most 7 x 10- 3 and ordinarily of the order of 10-4.8 NO results have been reported on heat treatment of either in-diffused or out-diffused diodes. This paper reports a marked improvement in the efficiency of the red emission observed for in-dif-fused diodes as a result of heat treatment after diffusion. The method described reproducibly yields diodes with external quantum efficiencies of 2 to 6 x 10-3. The observed dependence of efficiency on annealing time and on doping level will be discussed in terms of the lifetime of minority carriers and the formation of Zn-O complex pairs. EXPERIMENTAL A) Diode Fabrication. The n-Gap crystals used in this study were grown from a saturated gallium solution by a slow cooling method.8 The Gap content in the gallium melt was fixed to 10 wt pct corresponding to a growth temperature of about 1100 Tellurium was chosen as the n-type dopant and added to the melt in concentrations ranging from 0.001 to 0.06 at. pct. Oxygen was added in the form of Ga2O3, whose concentration was varied from 0.004 to 0.2 mol pct. The resulting crystals were platelets with well-developed (111) surfaces. Typical electrical properties were Hall mobilities of 130 to 30 sq cm per v-sec and carrier concentrations of 1016 to 10" cm-3 at room temperature. Diodes prepared from crystals with relatively low doping levels, in which u = 130 to 100 sq cm per v-sec and n = 0.6 to 6 x 1017 Cm-3, were examined in detail. The p-n junctions were produced in these n-Gap crystals by the diffusion of zinc from the vapor phase by the following procedure. The platelets were carefully lapped on both sides to a thickness of 150 to 200 u while maintaining the (111) orientation. After being etched in hot aqua regia, the crystals together with the zinc were sealed in an evacuated 12 mm ID quartz ampoule 20 cm long. THE Salt Creek Oil Field of Wyoming occupies a unique position among the major oil fields of this country. Many years before the beginning of actual production in this area, in 1911, it had attracted country-wide attention as a district holding oil possi¬bilities. Even foreign capital, mainly French and Belgian, had sought out this district as having oil values and spent many thousands of dollars 'in an effort to acquire property rights' in this field which was very largely located on the public domain. Owing to inadequate laws governing the acquisition of oil lands on the Federal domain and a careless practice having grown up among oil land locators of that time, a complicated title situation quickly developed in Salt Creek. This condition of uncertain titles together with the isolation of the field from industrial centers were doubtless the two most potent factors in retarding its early development. After actual production began in 1911 governmental regulations, suits between the government, and the locator, disputed ownerships between locators and claim and counterclaim continued to retard the field's development. It is believed that the title situation in the Salt Creek Field, where potential values of such magnitudes were involved, was responsible more than any other factor for the ultimate passage of the government leasing act in 1920 affecting all oil lands on the Federal domain.

I. INTRODUCTION. THE application of the camera as an adjunct to topographic mapping began practically with its invention, and it has been employed with varying success since that time. With the exception of the camera to be described, the plate-camera has been universally used in this work, thus giving a projection of the area photographed on a flat surface. From such projections or photographs, by the rules of geometry and of perspective, points defining topographic features and seen from at least two camera-stations may be projected upon a ground-plane-the map.1 In 1904 I employed the plate-camera for this purpose in Alaska, but found that the labor necessary to plot the maps, even in a general way, was long and tedious. In 1905 a small Eastman panoramic camera was fitted with spirit-levels, a sightalidade and a transparent scale, introduced inside the camera to register the degree-points in the sky-line of the film-negative; also, arrows to indicate the horizon-line. This was, on the whole, successful; but the details in the topography were not brought out in the views with sufficient clearness, and the photographs were too small. These difficulties were overcome by obtaining a larger and more carefully constructed instrument, which was satisfactorily employed in the field during the year 1906. Oxidized cobalt powder is known to have a magnetic hysteresis loop which is asymmetric with respect to the magnetization axis. The experiment described herein shows that the orientation relationship between the basal plane of hexagonal cobalt and the oxide which forms upon it at 400°C is {111}ux//{100.1 }co <110>ux//<11.O> This orientation relationship allows a magnetic interaction between the antiferromagnetic oxide and the ferromagnetic substrate which could account for the offset hysteresis loop. Oxidized nickel powder has a symmetrical hysteresis loop and so is apparently not influenced by any magnetic interaction between metal and oxide. The orientation of the oxide (cubic) was found to be identical with that of the nickel substrate when the oxide forms on a polished surface parallel with {111} Ni. IN 1956 W. H. Meiklejohn and C. P. Bean discovered that fine particles of cobalt which had been prepared in a certain way have a magnetic hysteresis loop which in a strong field is asymmetric relative to the magnetization axis.&apos; The cobalt powder exhibited this unusual magnetic property only after it had been oxidized in air or oxygen; it lost the shifted hysteresis loop when the oxide was reduced in hydrogen. X-ray and neutron diffraction&apos; experiments showed the presence of cobaltous oxide (COO) and hexagonal cobalt in samples exhibiting the biased hysteresis loop and specifically showed no indication of any other compound with the exception of mercuric oxide.* The magnetic hysteresis loop becomes symmetrical above the Nee1 temperature (paramagnetic state) of COO. Therefore, it was concluded that the anomalous magnetic behavior is associated with the influence of cobaltous oxide upon the metallic cobalt. It has been proposed that crystallographic coherency may exist between the cobalt and a plane of some antiferromagnetic material which has unbalanced spin distribution and sufficient magnetic anisotropy to hold its spin in the direction which existed when the specimen was cooled. COO has these properties. Therefore, Roth&apos; has suggested that cobaltous oxide may form with a {111} plane parallel and coherent with the basal plane of the hexagonal cobalt metal and proposed that, as consequence of the antiferromagnetic interaction between COO and the underlying cobalt, the magnetization direction in oxidized fine Co particles may be ro-lated from the easy c-direction.2 Such a relationship, he proposed, would explain the observed magnetic effect in oxidized cobalt powder. The main purpose of this study was to determine the orientation relationship, if any, between the basal plane of cobalt and the oxide which forms upon it. Attempts to produce a film of COO which was strong enough to be handled were not successful. However we did succeed in making a film of CoCo2O, which was strong enough to be removed from the cobalt substrate and mounted on an electron-microscope grid. Because of the close structural similarity of COO and CoCo2O, we believe the orientation relation found for CoCo2O, on cobalt probably also holds for COO on cobalt. The epitaxial relationship of NiO and Ni also was investigated. To date no shifted hysteresis loop has been observed with nickel powder. However, the similarity of atomic array in cobalt and nickel leads to the prediction that a {111} of NiO may be parallel with a (111} of nickel. Experimental Method Cobalt-Cobalt Oxide—A coarse-grained specimen of a (hexagonal) cobalt was prepared by allowing a large crystal of fee cobalt to transform slowly at 400°C. The crystal was then cut to expose a surface parallel with the basal plane. A back reflection Laue X-ray photograph showed that the 00.1 plane was within 2" of the cut surface. The surface was mechanically polished and then electro polished in 85 pet orthophosphoric acid after which the crystal was held for 30 min at 400°C in air. During this heat-treatment the surface darkened slightly due to the oxide film which formed. The film was not thick enough to give an X-ray diffraction pattern, even by a glancing-angle technique. Glancing-angle electron diffraction was not possible either, owing to the interference of the electron beam with the high magnetic fields which exist at the 00.1 surface of the cobalt. However, it was possible to make an electron-diffraction photograph of the oxide film by stripping it from the cobalt substrate using the method described later. By maintaining reference marks carefully, it was possible to preserve the orientation relationship between the stripped film and the substrate on which it was formed. The oxidized surface of the crystal was first covered with a 1 pet solution of collodion (cellulose nitrate) in amyl acetate. When the film was dry, small rectangles were scored on the surface with a needle point. The specimen was then repolished

IN spite of the war and the preoccupation of many physical metallurgists with work on secret or confidential problems, definite progress was made during 1944 in our understanding of the behavior of steel and of the effect of alloying elements. During the first two years of the war there was much concern over the possible unavailability of certain alloying elements; this period saw the development of the N.E. (National Emergency) steels. However, the measures taken eased the alloy situation and currently, highly practical problems under study are the graphitization of low-carbon steel and weld-cracking, while investigations of more theoretical interest have concerned hardenability, isothermal reactions, the effect of hydrogen and the interpretation of the notched-bar impact test.

THE progress of metallurgical practice and the demands made by the engineering industry on our foundries and mills have made the crystalline structure of metals a subject of far more than academic interest. Metals and alloys are made up of crystals. Even if we accept the view, so ably maintained by some metallurgists, that the crystals are separated from one another by an amorphous layer, it remains true that all but a very minute fraction of any metallic mass is crystalline. The conditions which affect the growth of crystals are therefore of importance in metallurgy. It is not only castings whose properties depend on the arrangement of their crystals, for the more we learn of the behavior of forged, rolled and drawn metals, the more certain it becomes that it is profoundly influenced by the size and arrangement of the crystals in the original ingot, deter- mining a structure which may persist in a modified form through a long series of mechanical operations and annealings. This is mainly due to the concentration of much of the impurities in the last portions of the liquid to freeze, so that the boundaries between single crystals or groups of crystals are marked out by a zone of segregated material, differing in properties from the mass, and offering a barrier to diffusion and equalization of composition throughout the whole. The importance of this fact has been fully recognized by steel manufacturers, who have to deal with ingots which are sometimes very large, and are cast at a high temperature, containing impurities which have a marked effect on the properties even when present in very small quantity. For this reason the Iron and Steel Institute has set up a committee to examine the whole question of the heterogeneity of steel ingots,(l)f and a report has been issued, containing an account of the structure of 16 ingots, ranging in weight from 15 cwt. to 172 tons, each of which was sectioned and examined by chemical analysis and by etching. A valuable body of data concerning segregation has thus been collected. The work of the committee is being prosecuted with great activity, and at the same time researches are in progress to determine the physical

President Raymond called the meeting to order, and introduced Mr. Abram S. Hewitt, who welcomed the Institute to New York. President Raymond, in behalf of the Institute, replied. The President then read the following report of the Council for the past year. The Council respectfully report that the American Institute of Mining Engineers has held four meetings-at Wilkes-Barre, Bethlehem, Troy, and Philadelphia, respectively-all of which have been well attended, and socially and professionally most successful. The proceedings of these meetings having been published in the Engineering and Mining Journal, and sent to all members and associates, are sufficiently well known. Forty-four papers, by twenty-six authors, have been read. These papers embrace s wide range of subjects, and prove the practical character of the proceedings of the Institute. The finances are in a satisfactory condition. By the report of the Treasurer it appears that $1290.10 have been received, $519.90 expended, and that $770.20 now remains in the treasury exclusive of fees for 1872. This fund, it is hoped, will be so increased by voluntary subscriptions as to enable us before long to issue s volume of our most important transactions in a permanent form. The Council has made a favorable arrangement with the Scientific Publishing Company, publishing the Engineering and Mining Journal, by which that journal became the organ of the Institute for the first publication of the proceedings, papers, and notices to members. This arrangement it is proposed to continue through the present year unless the Institute shall otherwise direct. It is not intended to supersede the publication of an annual or occasional volume, but to maintain an interest in the Institute, and to serve the convenience of members while our funds do not permit s more ambitious publication.

Dahl and Pawlek1 found that electrolytic copper develops extremely coarse grains at 1000°C after about 90 pct reduction by rolling. This coarsening occurs only under conditions of penultimate grain size, deformation, and alloying which lead to the "cube" recrystallization texture.l,2,3,5 The peculiar angular shapes and straight grain boundaries of the coarse grains were noted by several investigator.1,4,5 On the other hand, coarsening in Fe-containing aluminum or in AI-Mn alloys8 does not depend on a "cube" (or any well developed) recrystallization texture. It is true that increasing deformation by rolling, and, therefore, an increasingly well developed re-crystallization texture, are associated with decreasing incubation periods of coarsening.6-7-8 Nevertheless, coarsening readily develops in aluminum even after only 30 pct reduction by rolling, where the recrystallization texture is very weak.6,8 Also, coarsening was observed by Jeffries9 many years ago in sintered thoriated tungsten, which presumably has no preferred orientation. In all these cases coarsening is associated with grain growth inhibition by a dispersed second phase.8,9 The annealing temperature has to be suficiently high to overcome the inhibition at a few locations. But if it is too high, growth starts at many points, and the resulting grain size becomes much smaller.9 Normally, the coarse grains are more or less equiaxed, and the boundaries have a typical ragged appearance.6.8 Cook and Macquarie4 demonstrated that, in addition to the texture-dependent coarsening previously found at 1000°C,l electrolytic tough pitch copper may also coarsen at 800°C after 50 pct reduction by cross rolling. The coarse grains formed under such conditions have rounded shapes and ragged boundaries, like those in aluminum. When the annealing temperature is higher, the tendency for their formation decreases. All these observations suggest that the coarsening at 800°C is associated with inhibition by a second phase. Actually, coarsening at 800°C after 50 pct reduction by cross rolling was observed only in tough pitch copper,4 which contains Cu2O particles. On the other hand, the texture-dependent 1000°C coarsening occurs in both tough pitch and oxygen-free copper;4 it does not appear to depend on the presence of a dispersed second phase. However, the interpretation of the 800°C coarsening in Cu after 50 pct rolling as an inhibition-dependent process, similar to the coarsening in A1-Mn alloys, is somewhat weakened by the fact that this coarsening was reported4 to occur only after cross rolling, and not after straight rolling. It was, therefore, decided to re-examine this question. A 1 in. diam electrolytic tough pitch copper rod, No. 2 hard drawn, was annealed for 20 min at 700°C, rolled to 0.5 in., annealed 10 min at 700°C, and straight rolled to 0.064 in. It was then given a penultimate anneal of 20 min at 500°C and it was cut into four sections, which were given final reductions by straight rolling as follows: A 30 pct reduction of area B 50 pct reduction of area C 70 pct reduction of area D 90 pct reduction of area Specimens cut from the four sections were finally annealed at 800°C in an oxidizing atmosphere. Strip A remained fine grained up to 10 hr, but the specimen annealed 12 hr consisted of only 2 large grains. Strip B had a few scattered large (1/2 to 3/4 mm) grains after 1 min, although the balance of the specimen consisted of fine grains of about 0.02 mm. After 5 min there were several 10 to 15 mm grains present, and after 1 hr strip B was completely coarsened. The coarse grains had the same characteristics (see Fig 1) as those obtained by Cook and Macquarie at 800°C after cross rolling. Strip C had several grains of 0.05 to 1 mm after 1 min, but it was still largely fine grained after 12 hr. After 48 hr it consisted entirely of grains of about 0.5 to 4 mm, with an extraordinarily large number of twin bands. Strip D remained com- pletely fine grained after 4 hr at 800°C. These results indicate that, in the deformation range of 30 to 70 pct reduction, the incubation period for coarsening as well as the rate of growth and the final size of the coarse grains decreases with increasing deformation. Personal gain seems to be the most powerful incentive to economic progress. One of my first exposures to this phenomenon was the comparison between company stopes and leaser&apos;s stopes in a vein gold mine. The company stopes were 4 to 6 ft wide, whereas the leaser&apos;s stopes were so narrow that in some places one could not turn around. The company leased only that ground it felt was marginal to mine with day&apos;s- pay miners, but by skillful, careful and energetic mining, the leasers managed in most cases to make money for themselves and the company. The Hurting Truth This capitalist system, which puts a premium on successful risk taking, is under attack. Not that it hasn&apos;t been under attack all along. What hurts and angers us at this time is that the attack comes from the children of the system-its youth. Such blasphemy should, of course, be eradicated, root and branch. Or should it? Are we hurt in part because some of the things they say are true?

IN the paper on the development of the flotation process at Broken Hill (Australia) prepared by the Broken Hill Branch of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and published in its Proceedings for 1930 (N. S. 80), it is stated that the concentration of ores by flotation has been established on a commercial basis in Australia since 1904 and that differential flotation was practiced at Broken Hill in 1912. Since then, progress in flotation practice throughout the world has been rapid, and during recent years the knowledge of the reactions between comparatively modern so-called chemical promoters or collecting agents and the mineral surfaces has been broadened by the published accounts off many investigators, particularly those working in American universities. Because of the benefits the Australian mining industry has derived from the flotation process, it was felt that the industry should take some part in the efforts that are being made to extend the knowledge of the principles on which the flotation process is based. Accordingly, early in 1930, three Broken Hill mining companies-the Broken Hill South, the North Broken Hill, and the Zinc Corporation-together with the Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia, Ltd., and the Mount Lyell Mining & Railway Co., established a laboratory in the chemistry department of the University of Melbourne for the purpose of investigating the principles underlying flotation. Subsequently, the Burma Corporation, Ltd., expressed a desire to cooperate. The two authors are directly employed and controlled by these six organizations, and the cost of the investigation is divided equally among them. The research has been carried out under the general direction and in close cooperation with Harry Hey, chief metallurgist for the Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia, Ltd., and the authors desire to place on record their indebtedness to him for his ever willing help and constructive criticism.

Flotation of rutile with N-benzoyl-N-phenyl-hydroxyhmine (N-BPHA) has been investkated. Initially, floatability tests were performed in a Hallimond tube. The results indicated that rutile was floatable at pH 2-4 with N-BPHA concentration between 2 x 10-3 mol/L and 2 x 10-2 mol/L. Selectivity against hematite was recognized when operating at pH values below 2. Following the hypothesis of the formation of a surface chelate between N-BPHA and titanium ion, this compound was precipitated from a solution of Ti (SO4)2 to which N-BPHA was added. I. R. spectrometry of the rutile before and after treatment with N-BPHA solution confirmed the presence of this compound on the rutile surface. Adsorption isotherm and kinetics were determined by analyzing N-BPHA in solution with an U. V. technique. A hypothesis on the way N-BPHA is adsorbed on rutile is presented.

Location, Topography, and Climate The Burro Mountains are located in the southwestern part of New Mexico, in Grant county. The group is made up of two distinct mountain masses, known as the Little Burros and the Big Burros, the former lying about 6 miles southwest of Silver City, and the latter about 9 miles farther in the same direction. They are separated by the valley of the Mangas River, a tributary of the Gila, and a stream only in name, except after a heavy downpour of rain. The Little Burros attain an elevation of 6,625 ft. above sea level, and the Big Burros 8,054 ft., with the surrounding country averaging about 6,000 ft. To the south of these mountains stretches the desert plain, while to the north are the more frequent elevations of the mountainous country.

Professor Lincoln sought the assistance of the Nevada Mine Operators&apos; Association, whose Executive Committee constituted itself a Committee on Organization, and authority for the establishment of a Nevada Section to include the entire State was secured from the Board of Directors of the Institute. The formal installation took place at 10 A.M. on May 18, Mr. William L. Saunders officiating. The Honorable Emmet D.. Boyle, Governor of Nevada (and a member of the Nevada Section), made the address of welcome. INTRODUCTION In early 1979 Jim Walter Resources, Inc. (JWR) of Brookwood, Alabama approached TMCI Construction, Inc (TMCI) to make a proposal on a program that involved the sinking of up to 10 ventilation shafts of approximately 6.7 m (22 ft) diameter and ranging in depth from 500 to 700 m (1650 to 2300 ft) for the JWR coal mines in Alabama. At this time TMCI was already constructing the first spiral underground bunker (capacity 2000 tons) in North America for the JWR organization at their No. 4 mine in Alabama. The TMCI proposal was based on the use of the mos modern large diameter shaft boring machine rather than sinking the shafts using the conventional drill blast-muck technique. The proposal was made based o: the experiences by the parent company, Thyssen Schachtbau, which has been using this type of machin in Germany for shaft boring since 1971. As a result of the TMCI proposal JWR issued a purchase order to TMCI for the construction of four 6.7 m (22 ft) diameter, concrete lined, unfurnished ventilation shafts ranging in depth from 500 to 700 (1650 to 2300 ft). An order was thus placed with WIRTH Machinen- and Bohrgeraete Fabrik GmbH, in Germany for the manufacture of a model 650/850 E/Sch "Schachtbohrmaschine" (Vertical Shaft Borer = V-mole which arrived on site in Alabama in early 1981. The first V-mole GSB 450/500 was introduced in Germany in 1971 and was capable of enlarging in one step a pre-drilled 1.2 m (4 ft) pilot hole to 4.5 - 5.0 m (14.7 - 16.4 ft). This machine has sunk 9 staple shafts and deepened one surface shaft for a total of 2360 m (7740 ft) of shafts. On the last shaft boring operation in 1978 the machine was converted as an experiment to drill without a pilot hol using a hydraulic pumping system to remove the cutting debris. A second generation machine, the SB VI 500/650, was introduced in 1977 for enlarging the pilot hole to a range of 5.0 - 6.5 m (16.4 - 21.3 ft) diameter. This machine is still in operation and has already drilled well over 2000 m (6500 ft) of shaft. The third generation of V-mole, the SB VII 650/85( for diameters from 6.5 to 8.5 m (21.3 to 27.9 ft) was: commissioned in May 1980 and has been used for two surface shaft deepenings totalling 606 m (1990 ft) with another scheduled for 1982. The main advantages favouring the use of such V-moles were identified as: 1) A reduction in manpower to the crew required in a conventional shaft sinking operation. 2) A considerable reduction in time to complete a shaft compared to conventional techniques. 3) The use of the V-mole eliminates many of the hazards encountered in conventional sinking. Based on the successful performance of the first three V-moles in Germany, Thyssen Schachtbau decided to employ this principle abroad. In 1980 a second machine of the third generation was built and is now operated by TMCI Construction, Inc. in Alabama. The first shaft was completed at the end of 1981 and this paper describes the method of operation including some unique aspects not attempted on prior V-mole operations and some of the statistics arising out of the experiences during the first shaft boring operation. THE NO. 7 MINE FAN SHAFT SITE Jim Walter Resources, Inc. was formed in 1970 to exploit the coal field in Alabama on the southern tip of the Appalachian coal field. The coal reserves amount to around 650 million tons of mainly good quality coking coal of which about 350 million tons are to be extracted over the next 30 years. Shaft sinking and preparatory work began in 1972, and at present 6 mines are producing around 5.4 million t.p.a. Annual production is to expand to 10 million t.p.a. as soon as possible, and the ventilation shafts to be sunk by TMCI play a vital role towards attaining this goal. The first shaft site is located at the No.7 mine, near Brookwood, Alabama. The actual location of the shaft relative to the production shafts is shown on the mine plan (Fig. 1), which also shows the room-and-pillar extraction system used at present. The mine plan further shows the conveyor route used for the muck removal. The geological survey showed that the strata consisted of horizontal layers of mainly sandstone, sandy shale and shale interspersed with several coal seams. The seam being extracted at the No. 7 mine is a combined seam made up of the Blue Creek and Mary Lee seams at a depth of 513 m (1682 ft) and having an average seam thickness of about 2 m (6 ft). At the beginning of September 1980 the surface site preparation and pre-grouting work was completed by JWR, and TMCI was able to commence with Stage I of the shaft sinking program - the drilling of the pilot hole.

An IBM/XT microcomputer with 10 MB hard disk storage, together with automatic sensing capability of truck movements at several key locations in the pit, formed the core of this automatic truck dispatching system. System software is written primarily in MICROSOFT FORTRAN with supporting subroutines in MACRO assembly language. The software is designed to automatically monitor truck movement throughout the pit, to make heuristic assignments based on expected shovel availability and truck travel times, and to record production statistics. It is currently dimensioned to handle 50 trucks, 10 shovels, 10 dump sites, and three material types. Due to the lack of funds to purchase the necessary communications hardware, the work related to the automatic sensing of truck movements has not been performed to date. Otherwise, the system is fully operational on a realtime mode.
