IN all special branches of the chemical and metallurgical industries, in which large electric furnaces became necessary for carrying out new processes or for the improvement of old ones, the development of the electric furnaces took place on much the same lines. The endeavors to make a success of a new idea brought forth many ingenious designs, which, however, almost without exception, furnished the proof that the safest and shortest way to practical success is the utmost simplicity of construction of the necessary apparatus. Our knowledge of the qualities of materials for building electric furnaces and of the constituents of the furnace-charges, especially their electric conductivity and their chemical affinity . towards one another at high temperatures, is still far from being complete, and from this fact we must conclude that the smaller the number of elements in the construction of a furnace, the fewer the number of unreliable factors both in the construction and in the operation of the electric furnace. This conclusion deserves special attention when an electric furnace for making steel has to be chosen from the constantly growing number of inventions, inasmuch as the chief con¬stituent of steel, the element iron, is a substance which in its liquid phase has so great an affinity fir those elements which are to be removed from the charge, that it is very difficult to comply with the following conditions: 1, to beat the refining-slag to the highest point of its chemical activity ; to prevent the iron from entering the slaw, or, where this cannot be done, to make it enter so that it finally appears in the end-product

IN an engineering fashion we have made an assay of the engineering profession, using as a. sample the engineers listed in "Who's Who in America" (1928-1929). We are aware that some will say it is an unfair sample; that it came from the best mine. This is readily admitted, with this qualification: that all engineers and architects by virtue of their training and experience have been freed of most of the dross to which mankind is heir. They are -a selected group to begin with, having all the potentialities those in the sample possess. We are also aware that some will say a part of those included in the sample are not engineers. Our answer to that criticism is this: An engineer is no less an engineer because for the time being he is president of a bank, a university, an opera company, or a hotel company. Moreover, he is no less an engineer because he is a governor of a commonwealth, a United States senator, a member of the Cabinet, or the President of the United States.

In this study tantalum carbide filaments of various compositions in the fcc region were prepared by heating a tantalum wire in a measured amount of hydrocarbon vapor. Such properties as tensile strength, transverse-rupture strength, microhard-ness, lattice parameter, electrical resistivity, and magnetic susceptibility were measured as a function of carbon content. Some of these properties showed a maximum or a minimum between a carbon-to-tantalum molar ratio of 0.80 and 0.85, the composition range at which the color changes from metallic gray to gold. The recent literature has shown that in the large homogeneity range for the fcc phase of the Ta-C system there is a marked variation for such properties as microhardness,' electrical resistivity, ' thermodynamic properties,z'3 lattice parameter and superconductivity. In addition to the technological interest of these variations within a single phase, important theoretical benefits may ensue from a continuous investigation of properties vs stoichiometry in tantalum carbide and other refractory defect compounds, for example the effect of the metal-metal distance and crystal structure upon bond formation and electronic structure. Whether there is a similar variation of the tensile strength is of practical importance. Of theoretical interest would be the knowledge of how the magnetic susceptibility varies with carbon composition. Both of these properties, as well as the transverse-rupture strength, were determined for tantalum carbide filaments in the fcc phase region. The lattice parameter, the electrical resistivity, and the microhardness were also investigated and compared with values appearing in the literature. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Material Preparation. Tantalum carbide specimens of various carbon content were prepared by statically carburizing high-purity tantalum filaments in measured quantities of pure hydrocarbon gas. The filaments, which were 10 mil in diameter and 20 or 40 cm long, were heated by their own resistance at temperatures from 1800" to 2200°C using alternating current in some cases and direct current in others. Tantalum wire from two sources was used. One had a reported purity of 99.96 wt pct Ta. The ingot from which this wire was drawn had been electron beam-melted as the final step in its purification. The reported purity of the other wire, which was prepared by a powder metallurgical process, was 99.88 wt pct Ta. The impurities of both tantalum sources are listed in Table I. Spec-trographic-grade toluene or research-grade propane was used as the source of carbon. The apparatus for the carburization of the filaments is shown schematically in Fig. 1. The system was evacuated to 1 x l0-' mm of Hg when using the electron beam-melted tantalum and to less than 1 p when using the less-pure tantalum. Neither the difference in the base vacuum, nor in the hydrocarbon gas, nor in the tantalum filaments resulted in any detectable difference in the properties studied in this work. However, only the carbides prepared from the higher-purity tantalum were used in the magnetic-susceptibility determinations. Once the base vacuum had been reached, the system was flushed with the hydrocarbon and re-evacuated. For any desired composition of the carbide, hydrocarbon gas was allowed to leak into a constant-volume flask to a predetermined pressure. These pressures were measured by a Cartesian diver-type mercury gage with a range from 0 to 20 mm and with a scale expanded to nine times. The hydrocarbon gas was allowed into the reaction tube and the filament was quickly raised to the reaction temperature. The slack in the filament due to thermal expansion was taken up by drawing out the movable electrode with a screw mechanism. The filaments were kept at temperature from a few minutes to 200 hr. In the majority of cases the heating time was 6 hr. The reaction tube was cooled by cascading water on its outer surface. VERY few studies of the aluminum-sodium system have been reported. Heycock and Neville1 were unable to detect any solubility of sodium in liquid aluminum. Mathewson2 prepared an equilibrium diagram consisting of two horizontal lines at the melting points of the two metals. He was unable to detect solubility at either end of the system. Scheuer3 first developed a method for the chemical determination of sodium in aluminum and then studied the solubility of sodium in liquid aluminum. His method involved heating aluminum with excess sodium under hydrogen until the two liquids were at equilibrium, chilling the melt, and analyzing the aluminum-rich layer. He reported the solubility to be 0.l0 pct sodium at 700°C, 0.115 pct at 750°C, and 0.128 pct at 800°C. This paper on the aluminum-sodium system is the twenty-first in a series from the Aluminum Research Laboratories describing equilibrium relations in aluminum alloy systems. MATERIALS The alloys for this investigation were prepared from electrolytically refined aluminum (99.99 pct) and sodium of reagent quality conforming to specifications of the American Chemical Society.4 Chemical analysis of the aluminum showed the following impurities: 0.002 pct Si, 0.002 pct Fe, 0.002 pct Cu, <0.001 pct Mn, 0.002 pct Mg and 0.001 pct Na. The sodium content of all alloys was determined by either chemical or spectrographic standard procedures5 No. IIA and No. SII respectively. DETERMINATION OF LIQUIDUS The boundary of the miscibility gap was determined by a modification of the method of Scheuer3 and of that used by Henry and Cordiano.6 As finally developed the method was as follows: A fused alumina crucible 25 mm id with 75 mm depth and 1.5 mm wall thickness was placed on the bottom of a container made from a 4-in. length of 1 ½ -in. iron pipe and pipe caps. The space around the sides of the crucible was filled with 40 mesh crystalline alundum. A charge of 60 g of aluminum and 10 to 15 g of sodium was placed in the crucible, the sodium first being trimmed and rinsed with iso-pentane to remove kerosene. The container was tightly capped, filled with argon (99.6 pct pure), and heated to the desired temperature (between 670 and 800°C). A positive pressure of argon (about 8 mm of mercury) was maintained through a small pipe to the upper cap. After soaking for from 2 to 5 hr, the container was quenched by directing a stream of water onto the base, so that solidification of the aluminum-rich layer was rapid and essentially unidirectional. THE methods that may be applied to the treatment of slurries and water, as these are related to practical coal-preparation problems, are concerned essentially with the movements of solids suspended in water. It is assumed that there are no fundamental differences between the principles involved in the treatment of coal slurries and the phenomena encountered in general mineral-dressing practice, and the latter are-presented in some detail. Basic principles are correlated with present practice for both the anthracite and the bituminous coal fields, and methods are discussed which are designed to utilize best all the material subjected to treatment and suggest a sound approach to the solution of problems relating to the return of clear water to process or to streams. In order to approach the practical phases of the subject with sufficient understanding of the basic principles, it is necessary to discuss two types of phenomena that are applicable. The first is flocculation and the second is sedimentation. Descriptive matter is given covering the various methods and types of equipment employed to conduct these operations, with emphasis on their application to water and coal-slurry treatment. DEFINITION OF TERMS Definitions of terms are consistent with modern developments, and conform, in general, with their usage in mineral-dressing practice. Because of variations in coal-preparation methods, it is impossible to define a rigid upper limit of particle size for a coal slurry or sludge which will apply generally. Limits vary somewhat with the particular treatment method employed at a given plant. For purposes of definition, this limit is chosen as the particle size for which preparation methods such as Chance comes and jigs are usually dispensed with, and other methods, such as the Hydro-tator, tables, and froth flotation, are employed. Generally the limit will be 10 to 6 mesh.

A study of dispersion strengthening in TD-Nickel (nickel plus 2 vol pct Tho2) was conducted employing microstrain techniques at ambient room temperature. It was found that optimum strength was due primarily to the incorporation of stored energy developed by a variety of thermal-mechanical treatments. The relatively low strength of the recrys-tallized condition implies that the dispersed particles themselves offer only token resistance to deformation. The development of resistance to large-scale recovery or recrystallization at temperatures near the melting point requires a more extensive sequence of strain-anneal cycles than does the development of optimum strength. A micro-Bauschinger effect was observed which appears to be related to the lattice resistance to the movement of free dislocations. The effect was nearly identical to that in pure nickel indicating that the presence of the dispersed phase and considerably increased dislocation density (stored energy) only alters the number or effectiveness of barriers. THE early stages of deformation of engineering materials can be conveniently studied by utilizing strain-gage techniques which permit resolution of strains less than 5 X 10-7 in. per in. for testing in four-point bending (Carnahan and white1). The present investigation, part of a continuing study on the very early stages of deformation, was designed to reveal the true role of a dispersed phase in promoting high strength in a commercially available dispersion-strengthened alloy. Although this technique has been used for some time to study microdeformation in pure metals and alloys, it has just recently received attention as a means of investigating dispersion strengthening. Studying the very early stages of deformation in alloys which depend upon a finely dispersed inert phase for strength may prove to be a very important method for a better understanding of these materials. It is essential to obtain considerable clarification of actual dislocation movement and the kinds of deformation barriers which exist before optimum properties can be designed into this type of material with any degree of confidence. Considerable research on a variety of dispersion-strengthened materials has resulted in two different schools of thought regarding the strengthening mechanism. One faction2-4 favors the idea that the particles themselves resist the motion of dislocations. The criterion for yielding is the fracture of the dispersed second-phase particles due to an array of piled-up dislocations. Other invesfigators5-a have shown that particles are effective primarily by allowing a greater buildup of stored energy or dislocation density through thermal-mechanical treatments in the composite than the pure matrix material. The particles themselves, then, are not exclusive obstacles, but the complex network of particles, dislocation tangles, subboundaries, and grain boundaries are strength determining. The development of such a complex dislocation network in SAP has been studied recently in some detail by Goodrich and Ansell. The ability of dispersion-strengthened alloys to resist softening or recrystallization is also of considerable importance; however, the criteria for maximum stability may not necessarily be those for maximum strength. In this study, in addition to the evaluation of the microstrain properties of TD-Nickel, it is felt that considerable clarification of the true dependence of strength and stability on the dispersed phase is shown. I) MATERIAL AND PROCEDURE TD-Nickel is a dispersion-strengthened alloy developed by the E. I. DuPont de Nemours Co., which contains 2 vol pct thoria (Tho2) in a pure-nickel matrix. The average ThO2 particle size is approximately 0.1 p and the interparticle spacing is less than 1 u. The material was supplied by DuPont in two conditions: hot-extruded bar stock, and stress-relieved cold-rolled sheet 0.025 in. in thickness. The bar was extruded at 2200°F from a cold-pressed and sintered billet. The sheet stock was prepared from the extruded material by a process involving ten or more 50-pct cold reductions by rolling with intermediate anneals at 1800° to 2000°F. Test specimens used in this study were prepared in the form of rectangular parallelepipeds measuring 0.375 by 1.375 in. in thicknesses ranging from 0.025 to 0.040 in. Continuing the increase in production of crude oil and condensate started in 1937, the oil fields of South Arkansas reached a 13-year peak with 26,570,704 bbl. for the year 1942. The stability of the production branch of the industry in the area is demonstrated by Fig. I, which reflects the fact that although the number of producing wells in the state has declined from 3280 in 1931 to 2957 at the end of 1942, total production has continuously increased since the beginning of 1937. This is because all fields discovered since Jan. I, 1937, have observed spacing patterns up to one well to each 160 surface acres, the dual completion of wells where there is more than one producing horizon Eight new pools were brought into production in South Arkansas during 1942 (Fig. 2) They increased the state&apos;s crude oil and condensate reserve by 121,000,000 bbl., bringing the total recoverable reserve figure to 450,000,000 bbl. (Table 3) as of Jan. I, 1943. Abandonment of wells in the stripper areas of the state increased by 32 per cent over the preceding year, there having been 142 wells permanently abandoned in 1942. For economic reasons 279 wells were temporarily shut down as of Dec. 31, 1942. A price increase may start these wells to pumping again and also be the incentive toward the commencing of several secondary recovery projects in the fields discovered between 1922 and 1937. The hydrotator coal-cleaning process was developed as an economic necessity to meet the ever-increasing demand for an inexpensive method of cleaning coal down to the sizes ordinarily referred to as "dust." As the most urgent demand seemed to be in the anthracite field, all experimental work has been conducted in that territory during the past two years, with the exception of a few months during the strike of 1925-26, when some experiments were performed in the Alabama bituminous fields. The first commercial plant was constructed at the Middle Creek Colliery of the Philadelphia & Reading Coal & Iron Co.,. Pottsville, Pa. This plant is now operating. Application The field of application of the process is: 1. Cleaning anthracite fines, ordinarily described as "slush" or "silt." Slush contains all sizes from 3/32 in. down to and including I(dust." (Anthracite passing a 3/32-in. mesh is also referred to as No. 2 Barley and No. 4 Buckwheat.) 2. Cleaning sizes too fine for recovery by other methods. 3. Removal of coal from sand circulated in the Chance sand-flotation process. 4. Cleaning of bituminous sizes from % in. down to "dust." 5. As equipment for the performance of the froth flotation process. 6. Other separating, extraction and washing processes which may be considered outside the realm of coal cleaning. Principle of Operation Fig. 1 shows the method of classification practiced under the Hydrotator patent.&apos; In coal cleaning the machines are operated as "hindered settling" classifiers, the flow of solids and liquids being so controlled that the units may be combined in series.

Mainland China, with one-fourth of the world&apos;s population and one-tenth of its coal production, can no longer be ignored as a considerable force on the world energy scene. In terms of annual productivity, China&apos;s 300 million tons of coal rank third behind the Soviet Union with 655 million and the United States 557 million (1968 Minerals Yearbook. USBM). When viewed from another angle, 1967 figures show that increased productivity from all coal-producing continents, with the exception of North America, was led by Chinese-dominated Asia with a 19% gain. Not unpredictably though, China, on a per capita basis, is closer to the bottom of the list among members of the industrial community. Despite its misspent youth, and despite the set- backs caused by the Big Leap Forward of the late 50&apos;s and the Cultural Revolution of the late 60&apos;S, the People&apos;s Republic has managed to make some impressive strides in developing its coal industry over the past twenty years.

ALTHOUGH nearly 10 pct of the total tonnage of coal produced annually within the United States is handled by bulk freighters on the Great Lakes, very little of the detail connected with it has been published other than occasional newspaper stories and publication of tonnage statistics. Of the total tonnage floated on the Lakes each year some 10,000,000 is stored and distributed from the port of Duluth Superior, at the western end of Lake Superior commonly known as the Head of the Lakes. This port has the largest single area concentration of coal docks in the world. Since this area contains the largest ore docks, the largest movable material handling bridge, the largest and highest grain elevator and the largest coal briquetting plant in the world, it is entirely fitting and proper that here also should be located the largest coal dock and what we believe to be the worlds largest clam shell. Of the sixteen coal docks operated by ten companies, five are owned and operated by the North Western-Hanna Fuel Co. which has two docks on the Superior, Wis. water-front and three docks in Duluth, Minn. It is with these five docks that we are primarily concerned. GENERAL HISTORY In the summer of 1871 a small sailing vessel entered the harbor of Duluth Superior with the first commercial coal cargo. All the coal brought up that first year did not amount to more than 3000 tons. During the year 1877 the first dock equipped for handling coal was built in Duluth. Coal receipts increased to 52,785 tons in 1879 the first year for which an official record was kept. Since then the volume of water-borne coal to the Head of the Lakes steadily increased to a maximum of 12,688,321 tons in the year 1923. This tonnage was nearly equalled in the year 1927 and the next highest tonnage recent year was in 1946 when 10,105,703 tons were unloaded. The average annual bring-up over a ten year period 1938 to 1947 was 8,605,231 tons. Approximately 30 pct of the coal unloaded at the Head of the Lakes is handled over the docks of the North Western-Hanna Fuel Co. Competition of other fuels coupled with expansion of coal fields in the mid-west have held coal receipts for Duluth-Superior at a relatively constant figure during the last eight years although the total tonnage of coal floated on the Great Lakes has more than doubled in the past 25 years. Electrolytic production of cadmium at the Great Falls plant started in the first part of the year 1925. Prior to that time, an experimental unit had been in operation for a few months during the year 1922. At present the plant is the largest producer of cadmium, not only in the United States but in the world. Electrolytic cadmium is characterized by its very low content of impurities. The main impurities, which are lead, copper, zinc and iron, do not aggregate more than 0.05 per cent., leaving a cadmium content better than 99.95 per cent. The consumption of cadmium has increased rapidly since the war, with the growing use in the plating industry. Cadmium plating has come into prominence because of its connection with the automobile and radio industries. As a protective coating, a deposit of cadmium is superior to zinc. Cadmium is also used extensively in alloys. Important among these is the alloy with copper used in telephone and trolley wire. In proportion of 0.5 to 1.2 per cent., cadmium adds materially to the strength and wearing qualities. Practically all commercial zinc concentrates contain a small amount of cadmium. In the electrolytic zinc process, the cadmium that is dissolved in the regular leaching operation is removed from solution with metallic zinc, generally added in the form of zinc dust. This precipitate also contains the copper taken into solution and the excess of zinc dust, which is required in order to insure a complete removal of all impurities. The precipitate is treated by a separate process to recover the copper, cadmium and excess zinc. In order to make the metals more soluble and to render insoluble such impurities as iron, arsenic and antimony, the precipitate is roasted. The roasting is carried out in gas-fired McDougall furnaces, with a roasting temperature of about 700&apos; C. The roasted residue is leached with dilute sulfuric acid, spent electrolyte from the zinc electrolyzing, containing 10 to 12 per cent. free H2S04. There are comparatively few accurate data on the melting-or the freezing-point temperature of metallurgical slags, or on related physical phenomena, such as fluidity near the melting-point, specific heat, latent heat, etc. With the exception of the work of H. 0. Hofman,&apos; and some older work by R. Akerman, P. Gredt, and H. M. Howe, no information is available that is of direct interest to the metallurgist. Hofman&apos;s valuable work is the only one that refers to slags produced in the metallurgy of copper and lead. The classic work of J. H. L. Vogt,2 who views slags from the standpoint of physical mixtures (solutions in which the entities are minerals), has opened up a new field in the study of slags, and has placed the investigation of such properties as melting-temperatures, etc., on a rational basis. The recent work of A. L. Day, E. T. Allen, and W. I?. White, of the Carnegie Institution, at Washington, and of European investigators3 on certain systems of silicate minerals confirms the value of the investigation of silicate series from this standpoint, and it is my aim to apply this method to metallurgical slags, in order to gain exact data of value in metallurgy. The work recorded in the present paper is the result of an investigation of reverberatory-furnace slags made for a Western smelting company to determine exactly the influence of change in composition, within comparatively narrow limits, on the melting-point. For a general discussion concerning the mineralogical character of slags and the principles on which this investigation is based, reference should be made to other work: for the subject is too large to be stated in this paper, except very briefly in the following outline:

Conventional laboratory core analysis tests on samples of two limestone reservoir rocks indicate that about 20 per cent of PV is in dead-end pores. These tests (electric logging formation factor, mercury injection capillary pressure and miscible displacement) were carried out on 1/4-in. diameter test plugs. Test results show a clear dilference between these samples and sandstone or homogeneous limestone reservoir rock. Although the amount of dead-end pore space can be only roughly estimated, the presence of such pore space seems clearly indicated. Pressure transient studies also show presence of deadend PV. Although they do not give quantitative results, pressure transient data yield a reasonable estimate of the size of the neck connecting dead-end pores to the main flow channels. INTRODUCTION Equations conventionally used to describe reservoir flow behavior contain the implicit assumption that all connected pore spaces contributed to both porosity and permeability. Several authors3-7 have pointed out the changes in pressure transient behavior and in electric log interpretation that may result if this assumption is incorrect and, instead, dead-end or cul-de-sac pores are present. There is a need for laboratory tests that can detect presence of dead-end pores in core samples. With such information on hand the petroleum engineer can make more rational use of the mathematical tools now available for analysis of reservoir flow behavior. This paper describes laboratory studies designed to detect and, if possible, give a quantitative measure of dead-end PV in laboratory-size core plugs. Three reservoir rocks were used, two of which were limestones suspected of having deadend pore spaces and a well-known sandstone, used as a comparison standard, in which there is believed to be little or no dead-end pore space. All the studies were designed to measure the natural dead-end PV; i.e., the pore space which is dead-ended because of rock structure. During multiphase flow in a rock without dead-end pores, some parts of one of the phases can become surrounded by the other, thereby giving (for certain flow behavior) an effective dead-end pV8,9. Self-diffusion in zinc has been used as an instrument for comparison of the absorption and sectioning techniques as a means of studying diffusion. Single crystal as well as poly-crystal samples were used asanda the temperature range of diffusion extended from 200° to 415°C. For temperatures above 200°C, the data indicate that the results obtained from the absorption technique agree with those obtained from the sectioning technique. The effect on the values of the diffusion coefficient of electroplating vs evaporation as a means of applying the tracer was investigated and no significant difference observed. It was found that an excess or deficiency of tracer did not materially affect the results obtained from the sectioning technique, but invariably caused errors with the absorption technique. NEARLY all self-diffusion experiments and many alloy diffusion experiments have employed radioisotopes as the instrument for following the diffusion. Of the various techniques in which radioisotopes are applicable, the two most widely used are the sectioning and absorption techniques. In the former, the diffusion coefficient is obtained from a curve of log concentration vs the square of the mean penetration depth. In the latter, the diffusion coefficient is calculated from a knowledge of the decrease in activity at the surface after diffusion. In spite of the importance of knowing the reliability of the diffusion data and the widespread use of these two techniques, they had not been directly compared experimentally on the same samples. Thus, such a comparison was worthwhile. The specific system chosen for this comparison was the self-diffusion of zinc, since the metal was readily obtainable in high purity, single crystals were easily grown, and the anisotropic features of the diffusion added an additional factor of interest to the comparison. Self-diffusion in both single and polycrystals was investigated, since the possibility existed that grain boundaries and grain boundary diffusion might produce different effects for the different techniques. Also, the effects of electroplating vs evaporation as a means of applying the radioactive tracer, and the effects of applying an excess or deficiency of tracer material were studied. The general experimental procedures and the mathematical analyses of both techniques have been described previously in some detail, and only those points essential to an understanding of the present work will be discussed here. The mathematical analysis of the sectioning data requires only a knowledge of the solution of Fick&apos;s equation. where C,, is the initial concentration, C is the concentration at depth x, D is the diffusion coefficient, and p is the absorption coefficient of the solvent metal for the radiation from the solute. Having obtained F from the experiment, the value of z can be read from a plot of F vs In z, and D can then be calculated if is known. The necessity of knowing the absorption coefficient causes most of the criticism of the absorption technique. It is very difficult to measure accurately under the conditions existing in the diffusion experiment, but it is absolutely necessary, as will be indicated briefly later. Portions of this problem have been discussed in detail elsewhere." The difficulties involved in the measurement of the absorption coefficient arise from three principle factors: the physical characteristics of the absorber, the geometry, and complex radiation spectra. The undercooling associated with the nucleation of the secondary phase from the liquid by the solid primary phase was studied in sixty binary alloys by means of a hot-stage microscope. It was found that in a system of a and ß, a usually nucleates ß at low undercoolings, but ß does not nucleate a, except possibly at undercoolings approaching homogeneous nucleation. This behavior can be explained in terms of relative interfacial energies and shows that crystallographic disregistry is only a minor factor in heterogeneous nucleation from metallic liquids. PREVIOUS experimental work1-6 on nucleation of solids from liquids has shown that normally nucleation is heterogeneous, and that small solid particles present in the liquid are responsible for the nucleation. These experiments and the theory that has evolved from them have made apparent that there is a "characteristic undercooling" associated with the nucleation of the solid from a given liquid by a given impurity. Little is known, however, about the chemical and structural relationships between the nucleating agent and nucleated solid that control the effectiveness of the nucleating agent in catalyzing the nucleation, as measured by the required undercooling. A review of the literature has yielded seventeen undercoolingsL-6 for the nucleation of solid from liquid metals by "known" nucleating agents. All values come from experiments in which the metal studied was divided into a number of particles (10 to 300 pin diam.) much larger than the number of extraneous impurity particles so as to obtain a large number of particles free of foreign nucleating catalysts. Known nucleating agents are then introduced by coating the droplets with particles or a thin film of the catalyst. Six of the seventeen undercooling values referred to cases where, for various reasons, the identity of the nucleating species was not at all certain. Another six cases involved nucleating agents with a crystal structure that was not known. Four other cases involved undercoolings listed as greater than or equal to undercoolings which were very likely those for homogeneous nucleation. One investigation3 involved adding to droplets powdered oxides, carbides, and so forth that were doubtlessly covered with adsorbed oxide or nitride films. The highly variable nature of these films resulted in highly variable undercooling (as was also found in preliminary work in this investigation). It is apparent that the information on heterogeneous nucleation in liquid metals is too limited to give rise to any definite conclusions on the nature of the catalytic process. MUCH has been written and many prophecies made on the subject of plastics as a replacement for metal, and the extent to which these materials will compete with each other for peace- time markets. (Metal is used in a broad sense to include all types.) But although certain synthetic resin materials have made considerable headway in war production, this change to plastics can hardly be regarded as a serious threat to the mining and metallurgical industries. Even today, the total yearly tonnage of plastic materials is approximately only 1 per cent of that of steel, and only a small fraction of this might be considered as actually replacing steel. However, these figures must not be taken as indicating that the importance of plastics in fields hitherto considered exclusively the territory of metals is negligible-far from it. Considering the comparatively minute tonnage of plastics now being produced in comparison to the output of metals, the number of applications where plastics have augmented or aided the sale of metals is considerable.
