AT the session on mine ventilation on Oct. 8, 1926, held in connection with the. autumn Institute meeting at Pittsburgh, there was considerable dis-cussion of the use of auxiliary fans in coal-mine ven-tilation, and before adjourning the following resolu-tion was passed: "Resolved, that we, as a Committee, in consideration of the increasing and widespread use of auxiliary fans iii coal mines deplore the fact that they are often used without adequate knowledge of their limitations and dangers."

BRITISH success in extracting significant quantities of germanium from gas works flue dusts has been one of the prime forces in promoting similar research in the United States. Pittsburgh Consolidation Coal Co. and Pennsylvania Coal & Coke Co. are two of the larger U. S. firms with germanium from flue dust research programs. British interest in germanium started in 1933 when V. M. Goldschmidt reported that some coals from the Yard Seam of Northumberland and Durham contained 30 to 50 ppm of germanium.

In our mixture at Musconetcong Iron Works we have an exceedingly hard, dense, magnetic ore, which contains some iron pyrites. The sulphur runs from 0.5 to 1.5 per cent. To prepare this ore better for the furnace, and with a view of making a softer iron, we tried roasting the ore in a Gjers kiln. When it worked well, the improvement in the iron was very perceptible ; but the ore was continually sintering and forming scaffolds across the bosh of the kiln.

The oil and gas industries in Montana continued through the year of 1937 with but little change. No new fields were discovered, and production of old fields did not vary greatly. No outstanding wildcat wells were drilled. Perhaps most notable were extensions in the western part of the Kevin-Sunburst field. Acid treatment of wells in the Kevin and Pondera fields continued with gratifying results.

The 112th Meeting of the Institute, and the Annual Business Meeting, will be held at the Headquarters of the Institute in New York City, Feb. 14 to 17, 1916. D. R. Lyons (Republic Steel Corp., Cleveland)— Some tests using wet tables conducted by an operating company to determine the effect of table-water density on the quality of the washed coal should be of interest. The only variable during the testing period was the percentage of solids in the table water. Table operating data are shown in Table XV. The ash content of the washed coal remained constant or nearly so, as the percentage of solids varied while the sulphur content of the washed coal decreased as the percentage of solids increased.
