The production of petroleum in Canada is relatively small in proportion to the amount of oil consumed. Production figures are given in Tables 1 and 2, which show that the production in Alberta for 1934 was more than for the whole of Canada in 1933. The production of natural gas for Canada is shown in Table 3, In Turner Valley, the largest producing gas and oil field in Alberta, seven naphtha wells from the Paleozoic limestone and one crude oil well from Lower Cretaceous strata were completed during the year. The filtrate is subjected to electrolysis in a cell having an anode of crude lead and a cathode of refined lead under operating conditions to preferentially deposit bismuth on the cathode. The development of the model is described regarding the questions it was designed to address, model boundary, major sectors and actors, the availability of data, the copper life cycle, and major supply and demand dynamics. A base forecast is presented describing future supply, demand, capacity, prices, trade flows, scrap flows and capital expenditures from 1976-1990 for the major producing and consuming market economy blocs.

Improvement of drilling operations through the development of new, unconventional drill bits is a prime research target at Sandia Laboratories, Albuquerque, N.M. Sandia is currently focusing efforts on four new bit designs which its engineers believe may eventually improve penetration and reduce operating costs. The Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA) has budgeted $500,000 in support of this program to date. Two of the drill bits-one that chips rock with high voltage spark discharges, and another which fires small projectiles into the rock ahead of a regular roller bit-are designed to increase both penetration rates and downhole bit life.

ACTIVE drilling operations for oil were carried on during the summer of 1923 in various parts of, western Canada, particularly in Alberta. During the early part of the summer, interest centered in southern Alberta, in the Coutts area, just north of the producing Kevin-Sunburst field of Montana; but on Nov. 14 a strike of oil by British Petroleums Ltd. at its well near Wainwright, 120 mi. east of Edmonton, diverted public attention to a new field. According to present estimates, this well has a possible production of from 60 to 100 bbl. a day; the oil is 15° Be. with an asphaltic base and is obtained from a sand at the depth of 2019-2036 ft. The oil stands at 1700 ft. in the casing and there is sufficient gas pressure to cause it to flow when the well is opened. The oil horizon is in a sandstone in rocks of Colorado age. It is known that there is a terrace structure of which the western edge extends in a northwesterly direction from the vicinity of Hardisty to Viking, where it probably swings more to the north. At Viking a small dome-like structure on this terrace gives rise to an important gas field. Wainwright lies directly northeast of Hardisty. The exact structure in the Wainwright field is unknown. At Fabyan, 6 mi. northwest of Wainwright, the Imperial Oil Co.1 last year brought 1n a large gas well estimated at 14,000,000 cu. ft.; the escaping gas sprayed a small amount of heavy black oil over the derrick. The gas was obtained at a depth of 2727 ft., deeper drilling encountering a water sand. The results of drilling in the Wainwright field are encouraging for future development.

Remarkable as have been the direct results of Danks's puddler, there are some indirect and incidental results, which are well worthy of study for their intrinsic value and suggestiveness. The success of Danks's machine is due mainly to the nature of the lining and the manner in which it is attached to the walls of the revolving chamber. Herein lies Danks's merit and good fortune. Given such a lining, and the success of the machine, as far as puddling iron is concerned, could easily be predicted. Other important results have, however, been obtained with this machine, which, though clearly explicable, were, nevertheless, unanticipated. These are the increased yield of bar-iron over the pig-iron charged, and the elimination of phosphorus, which, though not absolutely complete, is yet more decided than in the case of hand-puddling. As regards the increased yield, this is merely what we have a right to expect if we consider the puddling process to consist in the oxida tion of the carbon and silicon of the pig by the oxygen of the oxide of iron. That this result is attained, nearly to the extent that the theory requires, in Danks's puddler, and has never been more than partially attained by the most careful experiments in band-puddling, points clearly to the fact that the contact of the molten pig-iron with the oxide of iron is much more intimate and complete in the one instance than in the other. The action of puddling in Danks's machine may be considered to be twofold: first, the removal of the carbon, silicon, and phospho rus of the pig, which is the primary object, and, second, the produc tion of wrought iron direct from the ore, which is entirely an inci dental result. Intelligent metallurgists were not long in recognizing in this latter result a fact of deeper import and greater value than the attainment of a perfect puddling process. A new method

ARTHUR JARMAN, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia' (communication to the Secretary*): Some remarks upon. Dr. Ledoux's interesting paper from one who has not visited America may, I hope, be of interest to members. It appears to me that there is considerable difference between the training of the American and of the British mining engineer. Not that the subjects are different, but rather in the way in which they are handled, the illustrations being, as far as possible, mining in character. Colloquial instruction is unknown in English curricula, but could be introduced with advantage. Students here assure me that an hour of conversation is of tar more use to them than an hour of the best lecturing. In England a school-year of 6 or 7 months would be considered very short indeed; but Americans do not consider it so, for the reason that the rest of the year is mostly spent in acquiring practical acquaintance with their subjects in works or in the field, and the shorter courses, when coupled with this large amount of outside expe¬rience, produce an essentially practical-minded engineer, who is also more of a business man; whereas the English system, though excellent from a scholastic point of view, produces the theoretical rather than the practical man. British schools are waking up, however, and the practical aspect of the engineer's training is receiving greater consideration. Once launched upon his career, the American engineer is immediately called upon to exercise his self-reliance and ingenuity, if he is to retain the confidence of his employers; but what can we say of English directors? In how many cases is the engineer allowed to guide the destinies of his company? The binding of the boshes and inwalls of blast furnaces has always been an expensive piece of work. When the old stone stack was replaced by the iron shell, the brickwork was kept at a thickness of five feet or more. These five-foot walls were still too thick, and the practice now is to have as thin walls as possible and to have a free circulation of air about the brickwork of the furnace. The " basket," or lattice-work biuding, accomplishes this object, but it is expensive, m to first cost, and, if any change in the diameter of a furnace has to be made, it necessitates an alteration of the binding or of the thickness of the walls.

J. STEVENS*—The authors state that the contamination in the metal was due mostly to the ladle refractories. Did the contamination vary with different brands of refractories or different qualities in the ladle ? C. B. POST (authors' reply)—That would be expected. In our shop we have used a grade of firebrick which is fairly standard. We do use high refractory nozzles to combat this erosion and high refractory sleeves, but there is such a problem when you get a skull in a ladle you just cannot use these high refractory bricks; you rip out the whole ladle getting the skull cleaned up. The acid bricks form a glass, and you can pull the skull out when you do get them. I believe you might find variations among the different refractories depending on how much silicon is in the brick. This determines how much silica is going into the interface between the steel and the brick. Our brick is about 35 pet alumina and 65 pet silica. With a brick of 35 pet alumina in the slag patches new calculations would have to be made. R. PARDEE*—Where can you draw the line in determining the refractories as being a silica refractory ? C. B. POST—More silica than about 50 pet. I think perhaps that is generally the criterion. The brick we use is a good high grade fire brick. T. S. WASHBURN*--With reference to the higher silicon that is recommended as a result of this investigation, is it contemplated that the specified range would be raised to 0.40-0.60 pet silicon, or possibly 0.50-1.00 pet silicon? These higher silicon ranges would affect the physical properties of the steel and consequently there might be some complications with respect to educating the consumers to 'accept this revision of the conventional analysis. Peche1bronn.—So far Pechelbronn is the only producing district. Figures are given in Table 2 covering the main features of the field, but these figures call for the following remarks: First, Pechelbronn should not' be considered as a single unit, it appears, but as a succession of small oil fields, each of which is affected by very variable conditions. Consequently, certain figures concerning production per acre, production per acre-foot, pressure conditions and thicknesses of oil sands would be so misleading that they have been omitted here. Second, as regards production methods, attention is drawn especially to the fact that 42 per cent of the oil is extracted by the use of shafts and galleries and the remainder by pumping wells. Exploitation, formerly confined to Oligocene sands, has been extended recently to Jurassic and Triassic oil-bearing formations. Gabian.—This small oil field, discovered in 1924, is almost exhausted. Exploitation to date is restricted to three wells. There were no drilling activities in 1933. Exploration.—During 1933, two exploration holes have been started in France. The first, in the vicinity of Lavelanet (Ariége) on the Dreuille anticline, has reached the depth of 2400 ft,.; the second, in the Autun Permian Basin, is drilling at 1300 feet. Northern Africa Morocco.—Drilling operations have been on a large scale in Morocco. In the Gharb district (Souk el Arba area), the deepest well was abandoned in 1933 at 7014 ft. Small irregular productive horizons were encountered in the Miocene at shallow depth, oil and gas showing in the Eocene, but no commercial oil field has been discovered. In the Djebel Tselfat, near Petitjean, a small production of oil was obtained from a Jurassic horizon. In the meantime deeper formations are being explored and a new structure in the vicinity is being tested. In Eastern Morocco, a well is drilling near Taza. Production in Morocco, about 2400 bbl., has not been listed on Table 2, owing to its origin—exploration wells.

The constantly increasing consumption of Portland cement in the State makes the above subject of particular interest at this time. The increasing demand is due to the rapid settling of the country and the fact that new uses are being found frequently for the above named commercial article. The industry is one that is bound to grow as the population increases, and this being the case it may be well at this time to consider briefly the matter of the chemical and physical composition of proper raw materials. A cement mixture is one that contains approximately 75 per cent, carbonate of lime, 15 per cent. silica, and 5 to 7 per cent. alumina and iron oxides; the other elements being magnesium carbonate and mall quantities of the rarer elements generally associated with limestone deposits. It can be readily seen from the above composition that it is possible to build up this mixture from a number of different materials. First.—A rock high in carbonate of lime can be mixed with clay or shale in such proportions as to bring about the desired composition ; the chief difficulty in the building up of such a mixture is that it is hard to find a clay or shale in which the silica-alumina ratio lies between 4 to 1 and 3 to 1 and at the same time shows physical characteristics which will make certain its adaptability to the practical manufacture of Portland cement. Very often clays or shales are found which are right chemically but contain large quantities of grit or free silica. Such clays or shale must be ground to extreme fineness in the mixture in order to make the silica and alumina combine with the lime when the mixture is burned. On the other hand, clays or hales are often found that have the proper physical characteristics but in which the amount of alumina is too great. Second.—A mixture can be built up of different limestones some of which run above the 75 per cent. requirement and others below;

In the Jackson gas field six wells were drilled and production was obtained in each instance, but none of these wells increased the area from which the gas is produced. Outside the Jackson gas field nine wells were drilled, of which details are given in the accompanying table. The seeming lack of activity in Mississippi belied what was actually happening, for a great many geophysical crews of the major companies were active in all parts of the state. There were approximately 65 structures mapped and for the most part these have been leased. It is believed that 1939 will see an increase in wildcatting over a large part of the state.

From our previous work (Gardner, Aissa, and Verghese, 1982) on determining the residence time distribution of ball mi 11s from radiotracer data taken in closed-circuit operation without interruption of the process, it occurred to us that the data taken for this purpose also contained information on the breakage rates of all the sizes present. It is the purpose of the present work to evaluate methods to obtain breakage rates from this data. A numerical solution for the impulse injection and subsequent detection of radiotracer in a closed-circuit linear comminution process is developed and used with typical breakage parameters, residence time distribution, and classifier functions to study and evaluate these methods.

A major problem whose importance touches the entire underdeveloped world is how to reconcile the demands of nationalism with the requirements of the international economy. Chile's copper industry presents a study of how one such accommodation has been slowly, if precariously, evolved. The dependence of a low-income country on the international economy presents, on the one hand, opportunities for speeding up the rate of development and, on the other, imposes a set of constraints on national behavior. Nationalism may be indispensable in motivating low-income countries to bear the economic costs and absorb the social changes involved in modernization, but it may also inhibit the acceleration of economic growth by its failure to come to terms with the international economy. Nationalism is a two-edged sword. An outstanding feature of Chile's economy since the mid-1920s has been its considerable dependence on the export of a single primary commodity- copper. Moreover, the affiliates of two US.-owned firms-the Anaconda Co. and the Kennecott Copper Corp.-have dominated Chile's copper industry, a fact which from time to time has posed conflict between that nation's long-range economic opportunities and more immediate political realities.

The regular activities of the Insti¬tute are financed mainly by income derived from members' dues, from advertising in MINING AND METALLURGY, and from the sale of publications to the public. In addition, collateral activities and special projects are financed each year by means of income from endowed funds controlled and administered by the Institute. In the aggregate, the principal sums of these endowments amount to more than $530,000. An active effort is being made to in¬crease the endowment funds of the Institute through a standing committee, of which H. T. Hamilton is chairman, and of which the other members are: W. H. Aldridge, George D. Barron, Cleveland E. Dodge, D. C. Jackling, Henry Krumb and J. V. W. Reynders. This committee feels that there exists a tremendous opportunity for the Institute to be of ever-growing service to the public, to the mineral industries, and to the profession. It welcomes suggestions as to names of men of means who are vitally interested in the mineral industries, and to whom the opportunity to make a contribution or bequest might appeal favorably if presented in the proper light by the committee.
