Since I have had the pleasure of watching the development of this process very closely, I feel that I ought to say a few words on the subject, although I cannot add much to what Mr. Roe has already said. I wish, however, to bear witness to the hard work, persistence and skill which have been exercised during the past two years, and which have so well deserved the success attained. Those of us who remember the history of the past efforts in this line, such as the rotary puddlers, in which also some of us had a part, can easily appreciate the problems involved, and may well be skeptical as to the outcome. Such, at least, was my frame of mind when the process first came under my notice. Now, after having seen every heat, but three, of the many made, it really seems to me that a process and plant for the mechanical puddling of iron has at last been developed which is practical, economical and successful. Of course I do not mean by this that either the process or the machines are developed to their highest point, technically or economically, but that, in my opinion, these goals are in plain view, and that the difficulties which remain are such as will be overcome by developing the skill of the operator through practice ;

BURKE BAKER, Philadelphia, Pa. (written discussion*).-The small briquetting plant of the American Briquet Co., at 25th Street and Washington Ave., Philadelphia, was built primarily as a demonstration plant. Its output per hour is 4 tons of 2-oz. briquets, which have been retailed in the, vicinity during the year the plant has been in operation. They have proved very acceptable for use in ranges, heaters and grates in-home, and in steam heating plants in apartment houses and hotels. They have not been sold for power purposes, although satisfactory tests have been made in. this field. Anthracite silt is used and is shipped direct from breaker or washery, the only preparation it receives being the removal f excess moisture by means of a Ruggles-Coles rotary dryer. Care is taken, however, to purchase silt containing less than 18 per cent. ash. The method is covered by U. S. Patent No. 941454, issued to Chas. E. Hite, and is known as the "emulsion process." The binder, which is the, basis of the patent, is composed. of 0.5 per cent. cornstarch or wheat flour; 1 per cent. asphaltum or hydrolene, and 6.5 per cent. water, on the weight of coal dust. It is prepared in a tank equipped with paddle agitators and heated by steam jets. The starch and water are first made into a paste by being brought to the boiling point with live steam; the melted asphaltum is then introduced and thoroughly beaten into the paste by the agitators. This rapid stirring breaks. the hot asphaltum into minute particles which are distributed through the paste, producing a smooth chemical emulsion. This emulsion, when dried, is not soluble in water. The binder is mixed with the dry coal dust in a horizontal paddle mixer, 8 per cent. binder to the weight of coal being used. FOR the first ten months of 1942, on which data are available at the time this is written, the coal-mining industry achieved a most creditable safety record, and ha1 figures for the year may show a record surpassing that of 1941 in which the industry reached the best accident rate in its history. The ten- month accident rate for both bituminous and anthracite mining in 1942 was 2.197 fatalities per million tons of coal mined, compared with a revised rate of 2.271 for the same months of 1941. The bituminous rate decreased from 2.139 in 1941 to 2.039 for ten months of this year, and the anthracite rate shows a reduction from 3.707 to 3.699 for the same period.

The rates of growth of pearlite in high-purity Fe-C alloys have been measured as a function of the transformation temperature. These and other data have been correlated in terms of a derived rate equation. Activation energies for the growth were found to be 24,200 cal per mol of austenite for the 0.78 pct C alloy and 27,600 cal per mol for the 0.93 pct C alloy. Theoretical implications are discussed. AN excellent review of the the theoretical and experimental studies on the mechanism and kinetics of the eutectoid reaction has been presented recently by Mehl and Dube.' They have pointed out that these investigations have followed two lines of approach: 1—experimental studies and derivations of expressions for the overall transformation characteristics, and 2—derivation of expressions for the nucleation and growth rates in terms of fundamental processes. Investigations of the latter type have been concerned for the most part with the nature of the growth at the austenite-pearlite interface in plain carbon and alloy eutectoid steels. They discuss two theories of the rate of growth of pearlite from aus-tenite—those of Brandt and of Zener. Both derive rate equations which are based on the assumption that carbon diffusion is the controlling mechanism. Mehl and Dube,' Zener,2 and Brandts. " have attempted to calculate growth rates by use of these equations together with thermodynamic and diffusion data. The results are encouraging, but agreement is not so good as to constitute verification of the theories. Furthermore, it Is not clear how these equations are to be used to study the effect of alloying elements which apparently exert little influence on carbon diffusion, but markedly decrease growth rates. It is not clear whether or not the addition to iron of an alloying element which does not diffuse during transformation can alter the rate of growth of body-centered from face-centered cubic iron. William H. BLAUVELT, Anaconda, Mont.: Mr. Stetefeldt's comparison of the producer-plants at Aspen, Colorado, and Park City, Utah, is of special interest at this time, when the attention of all western metallurgists is so forcibly drawn to the necessity of reducing expenses and losses. The fact that wood was used at Park City before gas was introduced, for firing the Stetefeldt furnace and dryer, offered an excellent opportunity for showing the economies resulting from the adoption of gas in place of wood, as well as a comparison between the two gas-plants. Some time ago Mr. Stetefeldt contributed an article to one of the technical journals, in which the economy obtained by the substitution of gas for wood at this plant was shown quite in detail. I regret not being able to quote from his article at length, but, remember that the total saving effected would pay for the producer-plant in about one month. This is a striking instance of the advantages to be secured by the adoption of the best methods of using fuel in our metallurgical works. In comparing the figures from the Park City and Aspen plants, the difference of over 20 per cent. in the fuel used in the Stetefeldt furnaces, seems remarkable, even considering the larger amount of sulphur in the Aspen ore, and the greater rapidity with which it was roasted. It would be interesting to have Mr. Stetefeldt's, opinion as to the cause of so great a difference. The inferior economy of the revolving dryers at Park City might be overcome by lengthening them, or so arranging a second one above

Silicon, unfortunately, is not in the same category as some other metals with respect to the absolute value of the highest purity material prepared. Tucker, in England, and Becket, in this country have developed procedures for the purification of silicon, and Becket's process has made industrially available silicon of a purity of 99.8 per cent or better. However, even the term "silicon metal" may be a paradox to some people, although not more so than the term "amorphous" as applied to silicon. These terms come from commerce, and "metal" is used to distinguish industrially high-purity silicon from ferrosilicon, silicon-aluminum, and other high-silicon alloys. Alloys of iron and silicon with 95 per cent Si or less are known as ferrosilicon, with a designation of silicon content where necessary, arid the term "silicon metal" is invariably applied to the grades containing 96 per cent Si and higher. The Becket method of purification was referred to in a monograph on the Alloys of Iron and Silicon, and the Tucker procedure was described in some detail in that publication.' In order to get silicon of still higher purity, a sample, prepared by the Becket method, analyzing 99.84 per cent Si, 0.020 Fe, 0.016 Al, 0.005 Ca, 0.025 C, 0.033 per cent 02, 0.006 H2, 0.006 N2, and 0.001 per cent Mn, was crushed to pass a 100-mesh sieve and further purified by a modification of Tucker's procedure. This modification differs from Tucker's method in that after treatment the 100-mesh alloy was centrifuged to remove the last traces of acid. Our directly determined analysis of this purified sample shows: Si, 99.952 per cent; Fe, 0.009; Al, 0.012; Ca, 0.003; C, 0.006; or 99.982 per cent. Silicon by difference equals 99.97 per cent. The variation between silicon by difference and silicon as directly determined is important. Although Tucker mentions the amount of insoluble matter in commercial silicon both before and after his treatment, he does not mention the existence of carbon in the alloy; nevertheless, he reports silicon by difference. THE discussion of production control at the Insti-tute's annual meeting was profitable in that it started some thinking. One pertinent question there raised was how the opening of new mines, whose now unneeded output would inevitably react on prices, could be postponed until the market was ready to ab-sorb their output. In transportation some restraint is being exercised on building new and unneeded fa-cilities, but in production no general solution of the problem has been offered. Yet in a special field of new development of increasing importance a quick and easy solution has been suggested. I refer to the leasing of mineral deposits on the public domain. The report of the United States Coal Commission says: "In its possession of approximately 60,000,000 acres of public coal lands the Federal Government has its own responsibility in restraining overdevelopment. The Department of the Interior, which has control of these lands under the leasing law, construes the law as giving the department no discretionary right to refuse applications for leases regularly made by qualified citizens or corporations for coal deposits on the pub-lic domain. It presumes, that the applicant believes there is a need for an additional coal mine in his local-ity and expects to find a market for the coal produced. Overdevelopment, however, is a fact in the West as well as in the East, and wherever present involves needless investment and excessive costs of operation. Plainly, the leasing law should be so amended as to give the executive department full discretion in its approval of the opening of a new coal mine on the, public domain, making that approval contingent on the showing that the new mine would serve the in-terest of the consuming public." A similar view of the Federal Government's re-sponsibility in restraining overdevelopment of its oil lands has been presented by the Federal Oil Conser-vation Board. The leasing law vests little or no dis-cretion in the Secretary of the Interior, who must grant a lease to a qualified applicant regardless of any obvious country-wide condition of surplus produc-tion. This wide-open invitation to exploit and dissi-pate the people's own oil resources could be restricted by simple legislation, although as remarked by the board, such a legislative remedy for a plain economic ailment "does not evoke popular support when its purpose is avowedly to put the brakes on development of natural resources."

This report is the accumulation of eight years of experience on only one small phase in the business of oil production. It is not intended as a final report but rather as a progress report dealing with the internal corrosion of oil field dehydrating tanks. The corrosion of dehydrating tanks continues to be a problem in the production of crude oil. The deterioration hy corrosion of these tanks falls into three general classifications: (1) Atmospheric corrosion of exterior areas, (2) corrosion of the underside of deck and the rafters and top area of the upper row of staves in that part of the tank which is known as the vapor space, and (3) corrosion of the bottom and shell areas, and the steam coils which are normally immersed in water and thus exposed to the corrosive action of the water. Atmospheric corrosion is primarily a paint problem, and has been omitted in this discussion. The corrosion in the vapor space, in this company's experience, which has been of great concern only in one area. has also been omitted in this discussion. The third, and most troublesome type of corrosion, and the one with which this report deals, is that which occurs in the water-exposed areas of dehydrating tanks, and, to a lesser degree. in some stock tanks. The operating temperature of these waters varies from 80°F to 160°F and the salt counts run from a few thousand to as high as 25.000 parts per million. Corrosion in these tanks occurs in three forms: (1) pits, (2) ringworm type of attack along the vertical and horizontal bolt seams, and (3) as a general attack, spread over a wide area. Steam Coils In dehydrating tanks, our experience has been that the steam coils are the first to show signs of corrosion, and then the shell and bottom areas. This action is not uniform throughout this company's operations. Some installations have coil troubles with very little tank trouble, and some show just the opposite. But in the majority of cases the coils are the more seriously corroded areas. This may be partly due to the fact that we have tried by periodic application to keep a protective coating on the interior areas of the tanks, and some protection has been afforded by these coatings. Through the years several types of hot and cold coatings have been tried with many various methods of cleaning the steel, ranging from use of cleaning solvents to hot and cold Oakite washes, as well as sandblasting. Although experience has shown that a longer life expectancy of a coating is possible after a very thorough steel cleaning job, it has still been necessary to recoat these tanks at least every two or three years. Until a few years ago, vertical spiral steam coil bundles were installed when the tanks were originally erected. When these coils needed replacement, in some cases within 18 months, it was necessary to remove a couple of shell staves to accomplish this task. This required a down time period of several days and was often very inconvenient to the production operations of the leases. This problem was considered on the basis that the coils were expendable, and thus. to eliminate any unnecessary down time when changing coils, the vertical spiral coils were discarded in favor of horizontal flat coils which could be taken in and out of the tanks by way of the cleanout openings, and put together with unions. This made a fairly easily replaceable and repairable coil. But it was still very much of a nuisance when repairs were necessary. Efforts to increase the useful life of the dehydrating tanks led to the adoption of galvanized tanks at an increased initial cost. The zinc coating was depended upon for protection and no other protective coatings were applied. In July, 1944. during the development of a new lease, a 3-ring 1,500 bbl, black iron water tank was converted into a dehydrating tank with steam coils to handle the new production. This tank was coated inside with a cold, brushed-on coating, for protection against corrosion. After approximately 18 months of service, holes developed in the tank and the steam coils. The tank was emptied and cleaned for repairs. The coils were so badly pitted that it was felt advisable to replace them. Coating Becomes Loose Inspection of the tank showed the protective coating to be still in place but loose, and numerous blisters were in evidence. A closer inspection showed that the interior of this tank was so badly pitted under the coating that any further attempt to use the tank was inadvisable. This tank was therefore discarded and a new galvanized tank ordered and set up at considerable expense and inconvenience. In April, 1946, another dehydrating tank installation was made on an adjoining lease. This installation consisted of a 1,500 bbl. 3-ring galvanized tank with two sets of flat steam coils 12 in. and 24 in. up from the bottom. In September, 1947. seventeen months after installation. salt showed up in the boiler feed water. When the dehydrating tank was opened and cleaned, the steam coils were found to be badly pitted — several holes having penetrated through the wall of the pipe. New coils were installed.

For the purposes of this paper, the boundaries of China and Siberia will be taken as they stood about 1907. Except in the Caspian region, it is doubtful if all the oil ever produced in these countries would equal one day's flow of a good Texas well. Considering the vastness of the regions and the variety of strata, it seems strange that these two countries should have made so small a showing in the petroleum industry. No doubt the condition is caused partly by lack of prospecting and of modern methods of development; in larger measure, however, it is evidently because of unfavorable geological conditions over nearly all of east-central and northern Asia. China The known oil occurrences in China are very few. For many years, perhaps a barrel a day has been obtained by primitive methods from wells near the city of Yenchang in the northwestern province of Shensi. A like amount was obtained from wells bored for salt water in the vicinity of Kiating in southwestern Szechwan. The little oil was separated from salt water by allowing it to stand in jars. The salt wells yield also considerable natural gas, which is used to evaporate the salt and also for domestic purposes. There is evidence that wells were bored in this part of China before the third century. It is said that more than 1200 wells have been sunk in that district to depths of 1600 to 2000 ft. (485 to 610 m.) in connection with the salt industry. The scarcity of petroleum in China may be ascribed to three general geologic conditions: First, China contains practically no marine sediments of Mesozoic or Cenozoic age; second, the Paleozoic sediments are not for the most part of the types that generally contribute petroleum; third, the rocks of nearly all ages have been strongly folded, faulted, and more or less intruded by igneous rocks in all parts of China except certain areas in the west and northwest. The mountainous eastern peninsula of Shantung and the similar district of Liaotung in Manchuria to the northeast have the general

It is often desirable to work an old mine that has not been in operation for some time arid that is filled with water. This is especially true in Nova Scotia, where no great depth has yet been reached in any of the mines. The following is a description of a self-dumping water-tank which was used by me at Tangier, for draining a mine, and which did the work of a large pump, while the original cost is merely nominal, in comparison with the price of a pump. The tank, A, Pig. 1, is 1 1/3 by 3 feet and 4 feet high, inside measurement, made of 2-inch stuff and securely bound with iron. There are two clacks in the bottom which open as the tank is lowered into the water, and which close and hold the water as the tank is raised. THE expression "unit process " comes up with increasing frequency in discussions among metallurgists and mineral engineers, especially among those concerned with training the next generation. The unit process approach characterizes a significant advance along the road from metallurgy as an empirical art to metallurgy as a branch of engineering. The purposes of this paper are to define and list the unit processes in specific terms, to indicate the scientific and engineering principles basic to all the unit processes, and finally to show how these ideas have been applied to a reorganization of instruction in chemical metallurgy. UNIT OPERATIONS AND UNIT PROCESSES Metals are extracted from ores and other raw materials by stepwise procedures. In general, each metallic element is extracted by a different procedure. For many of the metals there is a choice of several flowsheets. However, the procedures all have steps in common. In fact, the many different flowsheets are all made up of a relatively small number of steps which are combined in different groups and sequences. For example, crushing, screening, roasting, sintering, melting, and gaseous reduction are steps which each appear in the flowsheets for extracting the majority of the metals. The individual steps or flowsheet units can be designated as unit operations or unit processes. These terms are well established in the field of chemical engineering, as the American Institute of Chemical Engineers' definition of chemical engineering shows: " Chemical engineering is that branch of engineering concerned with the development and application of manufacturing processes in which chemical or certain physical changes of materials are involved. These processes may usually be resolved into a coordinated series of unit physical operations and unit chemical processes. The work of the chemical engineer is concerned primarily with the design, construction, and operation of equipment and plants in which these unit operations and processes are applied. Chemistry, physics, and mathematics are the underlying sciences of chemical engineering, and economics its guide in practice."1a In this definition, the distinction between unit operations and unit processes is that the unit operations are physical while the unit processes are chemical. Table I gives a list of the principal unit operations and unit processes of chemical engineering, taken from Shreve. lb Table 2 lists the principal unit operations and unit processes used for metal extraction. The division between unit operations and unit processes is similar to the chemical engineers' distinction and also corresponds approximately to the division of labor between mineral dressing and chemical metallurgy which has been customary in the past. It is often desirable to perform fatigue studies at relatively high strains and at low strain rates. A low-cost fatigue machine has been constructed for this purpose which has proven quite versatile. This machine is based on the principle of repeated bending of a strip sample over a shaped mandrel. A photograph of a group of fatigue tests in progress is shown in Fig. 1. The test sample is held in place between two shaped mandrels having a flat at their base to grip the sample firmly. A cam-driven loading frame is used to bend the sample alternately over each mandrel. The sample slides freely in this frame and is held in place by a light spring to accommodate increases in sample length. The pivot point for the loading frame is selected so as to minimize movement at the loading point during operation. The number of cycles to failure is recorded by a rachet counter which is kept in operation by a series electrical connection through the sample and is operated by the drive cam. The maximum strain imposed at the sample surface on bending from one mandrel to the other is readily calculated from the relationship, where t is the sample thickness and r is the radius of curvature of the mandrels. The rate of straining can be controlled by control of the cam speed. The device as shown in Fig. 1 is set up to run six samples at ambient temperature. A much larger number of samples can be run at one time without difficulty. ALSO-, by slight realignment of the components the mandrel unit can be enclosed in a separate chamber permitting control of test temperature and environment. This permits a variety of fatigue and corrosion fatigue problems to be studied.

D. B. DOWLING,* Ottawa, Ont.-I do not propose to start any argument, but really there is a comeback to what Mr. Coste says.1 Geography is probably not geology, but geology is geography. You cannot regard structure as geography on the surface, but it is geology as soon as you get under the surface. In Canada, it is quite true that they went too close to the Rocky Mountains. When boring in the foothills, as Mr. Coste says, they were too close to the mountains where they got into a faulted area, and if there had been storage, it probably would have lost a good deal of the oil. The situation in the Calgary field is one that might be interpreted in many ways, but in front f the foothills there is a very deep syncline. The gas and oil that is recovered on the edge of the, foothills is of such a nature that we must assume that it is not the pure crude oil. It seems to be somewhat refined, or a condensation product. The solution, or at least the argument that appeals to me, is that as the deeper part of that basin is, say, 6000 ft. below sea level, there must have been some breaking up of the oil on account of pressure and of the heat, and we are getting gas, traveling up toward the surface in the foothills; and as it comes up, it probably condenses again, and is caught in folds on the edge of the syncline so that we have a natural condensing machine there. The oil is not found on the eastern side of the folds, it is found on the western side. On the eastern side and on the summit there is a little light oil, gasoline, we will say, blowing into the well once in a while; now that looks like a natural condensation of the gas and a storage behind the summit.

MR. JORALEMON'S dispassionate discussion of this subject in TECHNICAL PUBLICATION 340 of the Institute shows clearly some of the failures and successes of geology in the discovery of ore deposits. He forces us to recognize, with humility, that chance has played a greater part than geology in the recent discovery of several great copper deposits. I think, however, he wrongly ascribes to unexpected or chance discovery some deposits that were found as a direct result of geological investigation. I refer to the Rhodesian copper deposits,, particularly Roan Antelope and Mufulira, both mentioned by him as having been found by chance. Also,. I think Mr. Joralemon's paper, inadvertently, does not- give the proper credit for the early recognition of the possibilities of these deposits. I feel sure that Mr. Joralemon and the gentlemen given credit by him will welcome any further information on this subject that will throw light on what will some day- be of. historical interest and importance. Consequently, I should like to set forth some additional data that throw light on who should receive the most credit, and' to indicate that, in my opinion, sound. geological reasoning and not chance is to be, credited for the development of the. Roan Antelope and Muf ulira mines.

The Pittsburgh bed, lying at the base of the Monongahela series, is probably the most famous bituminous coal bed in the world; famous not only for the product yielded in mining, but also as a key horizon in the search for oil and gas. It is the most important coal bed in northern West Virginia from the standpoint of extent, thickness and regularity. The general section is shown in Fig. 1. Roof Strata The strata that superimpose any coal bed vary more than the coal itself, and the Pittsburgh bed is an excellent example of 'this fact. Obviously, there were several changes during the period of deposition of this overlying material. Locally, sandstone occurs above and in contact with the coal. Sometimes a shale, or a clayey shale, rests on the bed and is often overlain by sandstone. Throughout the greater portion of northern West Virginia, however, the basal member of the immediate roof is a black or gray clay, which is usually slickensided. This material is called "draw-slate" by the miner. The color is due to the carbonaceous matter and the slickenside is the result of pressure, or movement, which may have come during or subsequent to its consolidation. This part of the roof requires especial consideration, because it is not self-supporting after the coal has been removed from beneath. The roof coal, 8 to 24 in. thick, is left directly below the draw-slate to support it and also to protect the clay from changes in temperature and moisture in the air, thereby preventing disintegration. The clay or draw-slate quickly changes its physical character when exposed, and falls if it is not adequately supported. Timbers alone are not effective in holding up this material, because it softens, crumbles and falls around the supports. Timbers hold up only the material that is directly over the posts and crossbars. SOUTH of Havana, there is a geanticline that extends from Madruga to Bejucal. The older formations outcrop in the. east and gradually go under until in the Bejucal region the entire geological column lies below the surface, with the Nazareno formation at the top. The well we are now drilling is located at the deepest part of the section. I think there is a good chance to obtain oil, for the conditions are like those in the Santa Maria field in California. In both places asphalt occurs in the upper shales in the form of dikes that break through the older formations. The drilling in the Santa Maria field was brought about by the evidence offered by the asphalt deposit, which overlaid the oilfields. Detailed geologic work in both fields discloses pretty well defined domes with minor faults. Between Madruga and Bejucal, the San Francisco formation has come, to the surface in a dome and still farther east there are other domes near the base of the formation in which the Madruga chalk is the surface rock. The Bejucal dome was selected for drilling because, it gave the greatest evidence of petroleum in the form of asphalt and because it offered three chances of striking oil in the three possible oil horizons below the top of the Nazareno formation. The hole is now 2600 ft. deep and has shown considerable gas and some oil. The lowest gas sand will probably yield from 2,000,000 to 3,000,000 cu. ft. per day. Very heavy mud has been used in drilling this hole and this has held back gas and oil indications.
