An experimental study has been made to determine the optimum flooding pressures for four different oils. The oil formation volume factors ranged from 1.08 to 2.13, and solution gas-oil ratios ranged from about 200 cu ft/bbl to 2,250 cu ft/bbl. Viscosities ranged from 0.38 to 0.95 cp at the respective bubble points of the fluids and from 0.7 to 20 cp at atmospheric pressure. Water floods were conducted at various pressure levels from run to run. The recovery as a function of flooding pressure was found to be different for each fluid, with optimum gas saturations ranging from 7 up to 35 per cent. The data indicate that substantially higher recoveries may be obtained if water floods are conducted at an optimum pressure and that this optimum pressure is a function of fluid properties. The same core was used for all tests, and the reproduction of saturations for various runs indicates that wettability in the predominantly water-wet core did not change. INTRODUCTION A paper was presented by Bass and Crawford' which described an experimental study of the effects of flooding pressure and rate on oil recovery by water flooding. This work was conducted using high-pressure models operated in a manner similar to that of an actual reservoir, with gas saturations being obtained by a solution-gas-drive mechanism. They found that the greatest oil recovery was obtained for the system studied by flooding in the presence of a 5 to 7 per cent gas saturation. Another experimental study simulating field conditions was presented by Richardson and Perkins.' They used an unconsolidated sand pack containing kerosene-natural gas fluid and interstitial water. They flooded at various pressures and flooding rates. For their system it was found that the recovery was independent of the pressure level at which the water flood was performed. Kyte, et al," found that oil recovery by water flooding was increased as the free gas saturation at waterflood initiation was increased. However, after the initial gas saturation was increased above 15 per cent, the increase in oil recovery tended to level off. All of their runs were made at the same pressure using a light oil saturated with helium. The desired gas saturation was obtained by injecting helium into the core. Dyes' made calculations which showed that an optimum gas saturation of 12 to 14 per cent may result in an increase in oil recovery of 7 to 12 per cent over that obtained by flooding at the bubble-point pressure. Others have also found that the presence of a free gas saturation may increase the waterflood oil recovery. In each case shrinkage was small and changes in fluid properties with respect to pressure were small. A careful review of the literature reveals that at the present time there is a wide difference of opinion on the factors affecting waterflood recoveries. This diversity of opinion is probably due to the fact that very little research has been done which has taken into account the many variables existing in an actual field being water flooded. Since the literature contains little information on high-pressure waterflooding studies using various types of reservoir fluids, it was believed appropriate that such a study should be made. EQUIPMENT AND PROCEDURE All tests were made using the same consolidated sandstone core. Torpedo sandstone was used to turn a cylindrical core 13.5-in. long and with a 2.92-in. average diameter. The core had a porosity of 28 per cent and a permeability to brine of 146 md. This brine was made up by adding 20,000-ppm sodium chloride and 30,000-ppm sodium nitrite to distilled water. This was used as connate water and flooding water. No fresh water was ever brought in contact with the core, as tests showed the sandstone contained argillaceous material which swelled in the presence of fresh water and plugged the stone. The core was sealed in a section of 6-in. N-80 tubing with Woods metal filling the annulus. The core was mounted horizontally; an injection well was placed in the center of one end and a production well in the center of the other. Pressure control was maintained by placing a back-pressure regulator (upstream control) on the producing well. The "live" oil was stored in a separate bottle and water was injected into this bottle to displace the oil for saturating the core using a two-cylinder standard-proportioning pump. THE man who forgot to mail the letters his wife gave him was for once justified at Tulsa, for envelopes, scratch paper and tablecloths were all in demand and through the two days of the meeting of the Petroleum Division, pencils were busy everywhere sketching out diagrams, drawing curves, figuring, or just taking notes. Those attending took the serious papers seriously, and discussion was wide-ranging but pointed. Despite the highly technical character of the papers presented, the chairmen had never to call for discussion; it was only necessary to say the paper was open for it. Both days the meetings lasted until after five in the afternoon, and it was enthusiastically voted to advance the meeting hour on Friday, in order to give more time. In all, ten papers, abstracts of which appeared in MINING AND METALLURGY for October, and copies of all but two of which were available in print, were presented in the two days, and no more could have been handled to advantage in that time. All but one of these dealt with problems of production engineering. That, the opening paper, was a general review of demand, supply and price in 1928, by Campbell Osborn, in which he argued for the price control of production and showed how the economic conditions determined development. J. Elmer Thomas presented a carefully prepared review of the same data, but came to somewhat different conclusions as to trend, and J. E. Pogue pointed out that in recent years it has been the manufacturing rather than the producing industries that have been notably profitable. These and other discussions were too long to be reported here, but will be printed in full later.

During the 42-year period from 1930 to 1971, the mining industry utilized 3.65 million acres-only 0.16% of a total 2.27 billion acres of land-and reclaimed 1.46 mil- lion acres, or 40% of what it used. Which leaves, as still unreclaimed, 0.096% of the nation's total land mass.

Largely forgotten by today's environmentalists and mineralogists is a pioneer scientist of the nineteenth century named Ellen Swallow. Fortunately, the memory of her accomplishments has been resurrected by Robert Clarke in his biography, Ellen Swallow: The Woman Who Founded Ecology. Her direct contributions to the field of mining included authoring First Lessons in Minerals and an analysis of the rare mineral samarskite which indicated the presence of an insoluble residue; her findings led to the eventual discovery of samarium and gadolinium. While enjoying the distinction of being the first woman student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, she successfully isolated vanadium in an ore which other experts had examined without detecting the metal.

Ore beneficiation via grinding and flotation has traditionally been considered an art because, until recently, the beneficiation plants that operated effectively were those run by skillful personnel who had acquired an "eye" and a "feel" for the process. Today, thanks to technological developments of the past five to ten years, ore beneficiation can be tackled more scientifically. In properly chosen applications, two developments that can bring significant operational and control improvements to concentrating plants are: • X-ray fluorescent spectrometers-that continuously measure chemical composition of flotation process streams, and • Minicomputers-that are relatively inexpensive and highly reliable in data gathering and process control.

This study shows that statistics on the rate of coal dumping can measure the effectiveness of freeze conditioning agents. The use of appropriately indexed dumping intervals or interval logrithms provides a more sensitive indication of unloading problems than does a simple calculation of average loading time because of the abnormal form of the distribution of dumping intervals. The paper presents information that indicates suitably applied coal freeze conditioning agents are effective in reducing coal handling problems attributable to frozen coal. Graphs and figures show that the severity of coal freezing potential due to subfreezing temperatures is proportional to the exposure time and average departure of the temperature from the freezing point.

THE volumetric behavior of isobutane at temperatures below its critical temperature has been studied by several investigators. Seibert and Burrell1 measured the vapor pressure of isobutane from the ice point to the critical temperature. Dana and co-workers2 determined among other thermodynamic quantities the density of the saturated liquid and the saturated gas and the vapor pressure from approximately 0° to 130° F. Sage and Lacey3 studied a number of the thermodynamic properties of this hydrocarbon from 70° to 250° F. The specific volume in the gas and liquid region was determined at pressures up to 3000 lb. per sq. in. ? throughout this temperature interval. In addition, the vapor pressures were measured at 30° intervals. These data taken together serve to establish the thermodynamic behavior of isobutane at temperatures between 0° and 250° F. with reasonable accuracy. However, apparently there are no data available at the higher temperatures. For this reason an investigation of the volumetric behavior of isobutane at temperatures between 100° and 460° F. was carried out with apparatus that has been described in another paper (A.I.M.E. Tech. Pub. 1127).

This paper deals with the reinforcement of igneous rock slopes at three open pit iron ore trines in northern Canada. The pits involved utilize overall slope angles in excess of 60º with ultimate depths in the order of 250 m. Three case studies are described. The first concerns the reinforcement of a 300,000 Ton undercut rock wedge, approximately 70 m in height. This was accomplished using 20 cm diameter steel bales, installed in 25 cm diameter vertical holes, and a cement-sand grout. The second involves the reinforcement of a 40 m wide diabase dyke which had been continuously failing as the pit deepened. A unique form of rock reinforcement was used in that the entire mass of the undercut dyke was not pinned to the wall. Rather an interlocking effect between individual blocks within the dyke was relied upon. A third concerns the reinforcement of a berm which was undercut by the contact between the ore and waste. This reinforcement was also accomplished using a combination of steel bales, rods and cement grout.

When it was decided to erect these furnaces the company also decided to use the Cowper type of stoves. It was, however, desirable to improve upon the plan of the stoves then in operation, to avoid, if possible, some defects which had shown themselves in them. The stoves now in use at Furnaces " A," " B," and " C " are of the well-known type of Cowper stove, having a circular combustionchamber placed at one side of the stove, and a regencrator with crescent-shaped section, resting at the bottom oil cast-iron glatings, which are supported in turn by cast-iron girders, the products of combustion passing up the chamber, down through the flues of the regenerator, and thence to the chimney. The objection to this shape of stove, that the gases would not pass down the parts of regenerator lying beside and behind the combustion-chamber—the horns of the crescent, as it were,—did not apply to the newer form of stoves, with combustion-chamber having a straight wall next to the regenerator; but. there were other defects, the principal ones bring the small size of the openings through the regenerator and the material used for supporting it. The small passages (4" X 4") soon choked up, and when a part of them became entirely closed, not only was the effective heating surface greatly diminished, but as the remaining opening were not sufficient to absorb the heat

From the time of its emergence as an independent state until the late 1950's, the Republic of Ireland suffered from chronic unemployment, the lowest living standard in Northern Europe, and-most serious of all-an aggravated emigration problem which drained off most of its talented young people. In 1958, however, there was a drastic legislative reaction to these problems, and this in turn ignited the current mining boom in Ireland. Paving the Way to Prosperity In order to reverse the tide of emigration, the Irish government now realized, challenging domestic employment opportunities had to be increased and living standards had to be raised. It was also apparent that future industrial and economic growth in Ireland had to be based on producing goods for export. The home market could not sustain large-scale expansion, and consequently Ireland's chronic balance-of-payments deficit could best be minimized by producing export goods. These considerations, together with the limited amount of accumulated wealth in Ireland, combined to set the objectives of the country's First Program for Economic Expansion in 1958. The general objectives of this program were (1) to stimulate all segments of the economy, (2) to develop foreign trade and (3) to attract foreign capital.

Copper from Central Africa was well known to the Arab slave traders who depredated the country in the nineteenth century. By the 1870's slave raiding was so intense that the habits of the tribes were disrupted, and they no longer worked the copper deposits or made the crosses and bars of copper which had been their custom. In fact, the country had been greatly depopulated by the slave raiders. News of this horror was spread to the civilized world by missionaries and, in particular, by David Livingstone's writings. Whether to extend geographic knowledge, to suppress slavery or for national aggrandizement, the rush for African territory was on at the end of the nineteenth century. Cecil Rhodes at this time was established by his successes in diamonds and gold. He obtained the blessing of Lord Salisbury in 1889 to form the British South Africa Company under crown charter. His objectives were to occupy the lands north of the Zambezi for England and pay for development out of the country's mineral deposits. He planned to occupy the territory and close the gap to form an all-British route from the Cape to Cairo, one of his great dreams. With this master plan in mind he sent his agents into the field to make treaties with the tribes.
