INDUSTRIAL specialization has rapidly created a demand for new and better alloys. A more thorough understanding of the requirements of specific industries and the discovery of processes by which it has been made possible to utilize certain metallic elements in larger quantities, together with greater purity in most virgin metals, has resulted in a great increase in the number and variety of alloys. This increase in the number of elements entering into non-ferrous alloy manufacture has increased the contamination in secondary metals, as received by the smelter. In order to successfully refine scrap of a much more complex nature it has been necessary for the smelter to install new equipment and to constantly search for new methods of refining as well as to improve the methods already in use. In some instances it is largely responsible for specialization in the secondary metal industry. It is usually necessary to remove the contaminating impurities in scrap or eliminate to a degree not objectionable, no matter how introduced. In order to know what metals or elements are of an objectionable nature, the smelter must make a study of the effect of single elements and combinations of elements on many of the physical and mechanical properties, such as strength, ductility, color, hardness, casting soundness, etc. The smelter of secondary metals must be able to utilize scrap materials of all kinds, for, sooner or later, most fabricated metal parts and the waste products formed during the process of manufacture find their way to the smelter. In addition, the smelter, in contracting for salvaged material from the producer, gets some undesirable and unusual materials. The value of secondary metals and the importance of their recovery has increased in recent years and it is no longer sufficient to recover the base metal only, such as copper from copper-bearing material, but it inessential that other elements present be recovered and converted into useful form.

THE rapidly increasing use of machinery for the mining of coal and operations incidental thereto has materially changed conditions from a safety standpoint. A few of the coal-producing states have recognized the need for specialized electrical equipment for use in mines and have introduced certain requirements in their State safety regulations, notably Pennsylvania. This paper discusses the principal problems involved in maintenance of such equipment. PERMISSIBLE: EQUIPMENT "Permissible" electrical equipment is equipment that has met certain prescribed standards for use in mines where hazardous conditions may occur and has been recommended by the U. S. Bureau of Mines. Such machinery is available on the market for most coal-mining operations--for instance, coal cutting, transportation, drilling, loading, working-place illumination, shot-firing and pumping. A notable exception is the trolley-reel gathering locomotive which, although its parts may be explosion-tested by the Bureau, has not been approved as permissible for the following reasons: I. The trailing cable is subjected to more severe service than on other equipment. 2. State regulations do not require that a working place be examined for methane before a locomotive enters it. 3. Even with two-conductor cable, imperfect or inadequate bonding may cause the emission of sparks at the wheels of the locomotive and at rail joints. 4. As the locomotive is equipped with a trolley pole, and as the trolley wire may be installed and used in unsafe territory in spite of rigid State regulations, a trolley-reel gathering locomotive is always a potential hazard. MAINTENANCE The proper procedure for maintenance of permissible equipment may be divided into three parts: (I) inspection, (2) actual maintenance and (3) changes or improvements to existing machines. To secure the fullest benefits through the use of permissible equipment it is necessary that all men involved understand the principles underlying the safety features of this equipment and realize the significance of defects, so that neglect and indifference in the maintenance thereof may be eliminated. Inspection From the standpoint of safety it is desirable no doubt to make a suitable inspection of permissible electrical equipment once a week, but the opening of every enclosed compartment at each inspection may do more harm than good. The openings to such compartments are closed with various types of covers very accurately machined, often made of the softer alloys to reduce weight, and fastened with a multitude of bolts, screws, washers, and other small parts. Frequent handling of these covers may cause sufficient damage to defeat their original purpose and intent.

DURING recent months, the acute shortage of steel scrap has necessitated the use of higher percentages of hot metal in the open-hearth charge. With these higher percentages, the sulphur content of hot metal has become an increasingly important factor in the control of the quality of steel. Thus, the blast-furnace operator is faced with a demand not only for more output but for a higher quality of product. More than go per cent of the sulphur charged into the blast furnace is contained in the coke. With the tremendously increased demand, the trend of coke quality has been toward higher sulphur, higher and more variable ash, and poorer physical characteristics. This has been brought about by less selective coal mining, increased production rates in coke plants and resumption of operations of many beehive ovens. In a single month last year, one blast-furnace plant in the Pittsburgh district operated with coke obtained from 52 sources. The effect of variability and quantity of coke ash on blast-furnace operation is well known. The improved results obtained with furnaces operating on coke made from washed coals compared with results on coke made from raw coals is ample proof of the effectiveness of low and uniform ash. Coal-washing plants, however, require a large capital expenditure, and are impractical for most of the large number of small producers, whose operations are confined chiefly to periods of abnormally high demand. Furthermore, not all coals are physically adaptable to washing. PRINCIPLES OF IRON DESULPHURIZATION IN FURNACE Although investigations of the blast-furnace process have not clearly revealed the detailed mechanism of iron desulphurization within the furnace, they have been sufficiently extensive to permit a postulation of the following general principles: I. Iron, in its travel from furnace top to hearth, continues to pick up sulphur until it has reached tuyere level. The zone of iron desulphurization is relatively narrow, being confined to a vertical distance extending approximately from tuyere level to the iron-slag interface in the hearth.1 2. Combustion of coke is confined to spherical zones extending approximately 40 in. from the nose of each tuyere.2 Coke ash is released as the coke burns in these combustion areas. 3. With a constant amount of sulphur in the charge, the sulphur content of the metal product is a function of hearth temperature, final slag analysis, slag viscosity, and slag volume. Both hearth temperature and slag analysis affect slag viscosity. For a slag of constant analysis, viscosity always decreases with an increase in temperature;

THE stratigraphical geology of the vicinity of Buffalo has always been of great interest on account of its bearing on the origin and history of the Niagara-river gorge, between the Falls and Lake Ontario. Recently, however, the character and thickness of the strata which underlie Buffalo have acquired more practical and economic importance on account of their relation to the possible occurrence of natural gas in commercial quantity near the Niagara river. In a paper presented at the Duluth meeting (l887), on " Petroleum and Natural Gas in New york State" (Trans., xvi., 906), I gave a brief description of the four wells which had been drilled by the Buffalo Cement Company between 1883 and that time. One of these wells is 1305 fret deep; and, at the time that my paper was finally revised for the Transactions (June, 1888), it was still an open question whether the drill in this well had reached the Niagara limestone, or had penetrated the Medina sandstones and shales, which latter are boldly exposed in a number of localities in the district, hut more particularly along the Niagara river in the vicinity of Lewiston and Qneenstown. The difficulty in this geological question at Buffalo has lain in the fact that no reliable determination could be made of the thickness of the strata included between the Corniferous limestone, immediately below which the drilling of the Buffalo gas-wells was commenced, and the Niagara limestone. On the other hand, the strata included between the latter limestone and the middle portion of the Medina sandstones and shales, have been minutely measured and studied in the Niagara gorge below the Falls by many American and European geologists. The first reliable section of these strata was constructed by Professor Eaton, and published in 1824 in his report on the Geological and Agricultural Survey of the District adjoining the Erie Canal. This section, extending from Lake Erie to Lewiston, is complete, with the exception that no thickness is given to the Salina or Onoudaga salt group,

PROF. HENRY Louis, of Armstrong College, Newcastle-on-Tyne, England, a distinguished member of this Institute and other technical societies, has recently sent to the Institution of Mining Engineers, and to the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, in Great Britain, a communication, the substance of which is as follows Prof. Louis calls attention to the absence of any recognized English term for the definite description of a frequent phenomenon-namely, the oblique position of an ore-body in the plane in which it. lies. In this connection, Prof. Louis says that in America the term " pitch " has been occasionally applied to this relation, and proposes that, in the literature of ore-deposits, it shall be hereafter restricted to this particular meaning, the angle of the pitch, like that of the dip, being always measured from the horizontal, and the dip being always taken at right angles to the strike, while the pitch is taken on the plane of the dip, in the direction of the strike. Thus, for example, in a vein or bed striking N-S., and dipping, say, 45° E., there might be an ore-body, the axis of which pitched northward, at an angle of 45° below the horizontal line, as measured on the plane of the inclosing vein or bed. If the term " pitch " had this universally recognized meaning, the situation could be simply and perfectly expressed by its use, in connection with the general data of strike and clip. As Prof. Louis says ?This suggestion has a certain practical value, and is not merely academic. Every mining engineer of practical experience in such types of ore-deposit will have met with cases, in which a vertical shaft has been sunk with the object of cutting the deposit, but has missed it, because the dip alone has been taken into account, while the pitch has been overlooked." He adds the acute observation that such an oversight is much likelier to occur with regard to a condition not definitely desig-

Up to a certain limit, the increase of pressure on the diamond-drill increases the rate of progress in drilling. That limit is set by the resistance of the diamonds to compression; and beyond it, the destruction of the stones will involve an economic loss, both in time and in money. It is, therefore, important to all diamond-drillers to know what is the resistance mentioned. In Europe, operators usually follow an empirical rule, which directs the maintenance of a pressure, on the area of the bottom of the drilling-tool, of 12 kg. per sq. em. For the tools in ordinary use, this is equivalent to 1 kg. per sq. mm. of the diamonds set in the tool. So far as I know, American drillers are using pressures as high as 50 to 60 kg. per sq. em. of the total area of the drill, and the consumption of diamonds (on Denny's authority, 0.2 carat per meter bored) is greater in America than in Europe. But the reason for this diffrence may be the comparatively larger size of the diamonds commonly used by American drillers. With the assistance of my friend, the late S. Woisslaw, who was the pioneer of diamond-drilling in Russia, I selected from his stock a number of black diamonds, which I subjected in my laboratory to compression-tests, To prepare regular cubes for such tests, as is generally done with other stones, would have been not only costly, but, what is more important, practically useless. I therefore determined, in order to assimilate as nearly as possible the conditions of actual use, to place each sample between a hard plate (corresponding to the rock) and a softer plate (corresponding to the bottom of the tool), into which it would be pressed during the test.

` LAWRENCE ADDICKS, New York, N. Y.-We have really two competitive processes for the production of electrolytic zinc. In the process used at Great Falls, the ore is roasted and the calcines leached, leaving a residue which has to be smelted; in the other method, the ore is burned, the zinc and lead fumed off, and the condensed fumes are leached. I do not think that we can yet come to any decision as to which is the better way to attack the problem. Of course if we roast first and then leach, various substances remain in the calcines which may consume sulphuric acid; whereas if we do the burning first, we obtain simply the zinc and lead oxides, with considerable sulphate, in the fume, and there is no shortage of acid. It also depends partly on the complexity of the ore. The one that Mr. Hall is treating and the ore they are treating at Great Falls are not quite alike, but I think they are sufficiently similar to make a comparison of the two methods, working in competition, on different parts of the country, very interesting. C. E. SCHWARTZ, Miami, Okla.-Mr. Hall states that the Joplin conditions are not suitable for the manufacture of electrolytic zinc. When we speak of Joplin ore in general, we consider, of course, a 60-per cent: concentrate with comparatively low iron, but if a low-grade concentrate could be made from tailings and so-called chats, then the problem would be quite different. A Joplin ore is comparatively simple to treat electrolytically, and I believe the electrolytic process would open a field for the treatment of such ores as would not be ordinarily smeltable; that is,

A theoretical analysis of the austenite-martensite transformation is presented which predicts the habit plane, orientation relationships, and macroscopic distortions from a knowledge only of the crystal structures of the initial and final phases. THIS paper presents a new theory of the formation of martensite. This theory makes possible the calculation of the austenite planes on which the martensite plates form, the orientation relationship between the austenite and martensite crystal axes, and the macroscopic distortions which are observed. The only input data needed are the crystal structures and lattice parameters of the austenite and martensite. Considerable effort has been devoted over the past thirty years to the development of an understanding of the crystallographic features of martensite reactions. Much of this work has been done on steels and iron-nickel alloys, for which a great deal of data has been accumulated concerning the shape and orientation of the martensite plates, the relative orientations of the austenite and martensite crystal axes, and the observable distortions which result from transformation. These observations are reviewed in refs. 1, 2, and 3. The first major step toward an understanding of these phenomena was made in 1924 by Bain,' who showed that the a body-centered cubic structure can be produced from the 7 face-centered cubic structure by a contraction of about 17 pct in the direction of one of the austenite cube axes and an expansion of 12 pct in all directions perpendicular to it. Since that time, most of the efforts at further interpretation have been made by investigators who have worked from the phenomenological data, incorporating some of the information from the lattice properties, and have sought an analysis into likely deformations which would produce the observed results."- "11 but the three most recent papers on the subject have already been reviewed in some detail." Machlin and Cohenl0 measured the components of the distortion matrix and verified that the habit plane is a plane of zero distortion and rotation for the (259) case. They showed that the measured distortion matrix, when applied to the parent lattice, does not yield the product lattice and hence some inhomogeneous distortion must occur. Frank,u working from the lattice properties and taking some clues from the observations, considered the correspondence of close-packed rows and planes in the austenite and martensite. He predicted substantially the observed lattice relationship and habit plane for certain steels which have a (225) habit. Geisler12 suggested that there is a natural tendency for the habit plane to be a (111) and postulated certain slip processes to account for the fact that the experimentally observed habit plane is irrational and deviates from the assumed one. The present work differs from previous treatments of martensite formation in that it permits calculation of all the major manifestations of the process. Habit plane indices, orientation relationships, and observable distortions are all calculated from a knowledge of the crystal structures of the initial and final phases alone. The calculations contain no adjustable parameters. The agreement found between calculated results and the observations reported in the literature constitutes powerful evidence in favor of the mechanism of martensite formation proposed. The theory is applicable to systems other than steel (as is discussed later in this paper) which exhibit a diffusionless phase change but because of the wide-spread interest in the austenite-martensite transformation, particular attention will be given to the iron-base alloys. For other systems which undergo a similar face-centered cubic to face-centered tetragonal transformation, the mathematical treatment is identical with that presented here. Hence the theory successfully describes the transformation in the indium-thallium alloy.'" Homogeneous Transformation to Martensite The distortion which any homogeneously transforming volume of austenite undergoes in order to become martensite is shown in Fig. 1, as was first suggested by Bain.' (This distortion will hereafter be referred to as the "Bain distortion.") This specification of a contraction along one cube axis ;ombined with an expansion in all directions perpendicular to this axis describes what is properly called the "pure" distortion associated with this transformation. The distinction between a "pure" and an "impure" distortion plays an important part in the discussion which follows. A "pure" distortion is characterized by the existence of at least one set of orthogonal axes fixed in the body which are not rotated by the distortion. (These are called the "principal axes" of the distortion.) No such set of axes exists in the case of an "impure" distortion. On the other hand, an impure distortion can always be represented as the result of a pure distortion combined with the rotation of the specimen as a rigid body. Although cresylic acids have been standard frothers in flotation for many years, there has been little discussion of their nature in the metallurgical literature. Aside from references in the patent literature, the paper by Landolt, Hill, and Lowyl in 1930, which resented a study of the frothing and collecting properties of some of the constituents of crude cresylic acids, represents the only contribution of this type. The close froth control required in the delicate selective separations of present-day flotation operations have required the flotation metallurgist to choose his frothers with care, and have caused him to require of the manufacturer a closely controlled, uniform product. A background of knowledge of the chemical composition and physical and chemical properties of the frothers, by which their action may be correlated, should aid in selecting frothers for particular flotation requirements. Further, the recent almost complete replacement in flotation of coal-tar cresylic acids by those derived from petroleum makes it especially desirable to review the flotation behavior of the acids from the old and the new sources. In view of these facts the Milling Methods Committee of the A.I.M.E. suggested to the Oronite Chemical Co. of San Francisco the preparation of a paper on the subject, and this paper has accordingly been prepared as a contribution by the California Research Corporation, the research affiliate of the Oronite Chemical Co. The discussion is from the following aspects: (I) constitution and properties; (2) sources; (3) comparison of coal-tar and petroleum cresylic acids; (4) characteristics as frothers, with particular reference to the effect of the substitution of petroleum acids for coal-tar acids. Constitution and Properties Cresylic acids are commonly regarded as mixtures of orthocresol, metacresol and paracresol. This was, indeed, the former meaning of the term, but in recent years it has been loosely applied to any mixture of alkyl phenols boiling above 190°C.; that is, excluding only phenol itself. This means that cresylic acids, as they are known today, may consist of mixtures, not only of the three isomeric cresols, but of six xylenols and of a variety of higher boiling homologues. Generically the constituents of cresylic acids are alkyl phenols, and they are often so designated in the literature to avoid the more indefinite term, "cresylic acids." They form an homologous series starting with phenol, which has the familiar benzene ring, with an hydroxyl group in place of one of the hydrogen atoms. The series of alkyl phenols is formed by the substitution of alkyl side chains, such as methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl, etc., for hydrogen atoms of the benzene ring of phenol. Some

M. A. Hanna is investigating a nickel prospect near Riddle, Ore. Drilling is under way and a prospect shaft is being put down to obtain samples for metallurgical test work. The deposit is favorably situated for open pit mining. The property had been drilled previously by the USGS and by Freeport Sulphur Co. A $75,000 laboratory pilot plant will begin operations this year to determine if economic beneficiation of a deposit of low grade iron ore, being examined by M. A. Hanna in the Iron River, Mich., district, is possible. Three miles east of Randville 2560 acres of land have been acquired, and drilled, over the last 2 years. The ore is reported to be 34 pat Fe.

This paper describes an improved acidizing technique which has been applied in acidizing gas wells in the La Gloria Field. Wells acidized in this manner exhibited a much greater increase in deliverahility than wells acidized in the conventional manner. The acid is injected into the well in small slugs separated by a small volume of high pressure gas. The acid and gas are displaced from the tuhing by high pressure gas to reduce the hydrostatic head on the well when the acid is recovered from the well. The well is opened for production as soon as the acid and gas are displaced. This procedure permits a very rapid recovery of the acid which results in large increases in the deliverability of the gas wells. It has been found advantageous in the acidization of gas injection wells to inject the high pressure gas directly after the acid without backflowing the acid out of the well. This practice has made it possible to inject the gas in the injection wells of this field with a much lower pressure differential. This reduces the horsepower required to inject the gas and also decrease:, the number of injection wells required per reservoir. INTRODUCTION The results obtained by acidizing gas wells ill the La Gloria Field have varied considerably in the past. For this reason. a planned study of the acidizing procedure was undertaken in order to obtain more consistent results. The Frio Sands of the La Gloria Field are rather permeable and it was not necessary to acidize many of the wells when they were originally completed. At the completion of an eight-year cycling program in several of the gas reservoirs, it became necessary to recomplete many wells in other reservoirs. It was found that the opan Flow potential of the wells recompleted in different sands was not as large as wells that were originally completted in that reservoir. A study of the drilling records of several of these wells indicated that the sands had originally been subjected to considerable hydrostatic drilling fluid overload while the well was being drilled to the deeper sands of the field. It is indicated that during this eight-year period, the drilling mud and water that were lost into the formation when the well was being drilled had formed a relatively impermeable Eone around the well bore. This impermeable zone around the well bore made it very difficult to obtain high deliverability wells when the original wells are recompleted in other zones. Muskat' has shown that in uniformly permeable and porous formations a zone of partial plugging one ft in radius around the well would drastically decrease the productivity of the well. The analysis for this problem shows that the production capacity of a well is very sensitive to the value of the permeability of the zone immediately surrounding the well bore. This is to be expected in view of the highly localized character of the pressure drop in a radial flow system about the well center. A short time ago I paid a visit to the alluvial gold fields on the tributaries of the Chaudiere River in Beauce County, Quebec, in company with A. 0. Dufresne, late manager of the Champs d'or Rigaud-Veaudreuil, and now assistant to the Superintendent of Mines of the Province of Quebec. As the conditions under which the gold occurs in this district are not very generally known, and present some interesting features, a brief description of these conditions, and a consideration of the causes which gave rise to them, may be of interest to other mining engineers. During the latter half of last century the country was visited by many mining engineers and geologists, and many references to it may be found in the reports of the Geological Survey of Canada between 1848 and 1911. The most important of these are by J. A. Dresser and J. Keele and the late Robert Chalmers. The Department of Colonization and Mines of the Province of Quebec also published a report with map on the district by J. Obalski. From the earliest times the valley of the Chaudiere River formed one of the main avenues of approach to the St. Lawrence in the vicinity of Quebec from the country to the south as far as the seaboard of the States of Maine and Massachusetts. The Indians had a well-known trail along the banks of the stream, and armed troops and foraging parties constantly moved backward and forward along it between Quebec and New England in those insecure times before the ceding of Canada to Great Britain. Even yet the natural advantages of this old military route are recognized, and the government of the Province of Quebec has now under construction along it a magnificent highway from Quebec to the International Boundary Line, which is to form part of a through highway from that city to Boston. The land along the valley is naturally well suited for agriculture, and about the end of the eighteenth and the beginning of the nineteenth centuries farmers began to go back from the St. Lawrence, and to occupy the higher lands along the upper portions of the Chaudiere Valley. This settlement has gone on until now the country is peopled with a prosperous agricultural population.

The paper presents an analyzer and the method for the continuous determination of weight percentage of ore grains with diameter smaller than 75 µm in mineral slurries. The method is based upon the measurement of characteristic x-rays of copper excited by primary radiation of two different energies 16.5 keV and 60 keV from Pu238 and Am241 sources respectively. Additionally the backscattered primary radiation is measured in order to correct the variations of the solids content in the slurry. Since the particle size distribution of slurry can be described by the Rosin-Rammler formula, some calculations have been carried out in order to evaluate the influence of distribution parameters upon the results of the measurements of weight percentage U75 of particles smaller than 75 µm. The influence of solids content and of the copper concentration variation on the results has been also evaluated.1 It resulted from the calculations that the ratio rl/rz, where rl and r2 are the relative intensities of copper characteristic x-rays excited with 16.5 keV and 60 keV photons respectively does not depend on the copper content within the range 1 % to 4% of copper and is slightly dependent on the solids weight fraction and its chemical composition. The change of the dispersion parameter of the Rosin- Rammler distribution from 0.5 to 0.9 results in a change of value of U75 of approximately 3.0%. The results of calculations have been confirmed by the results of laboratory experiments. Therefore, a prototype of industrial analyzer for continuous determination of weight percentage of particles smaller than 75 µm has been designed and made. Its schematic drawing is shown in [Fig. 1]. Slurry is flowing down through steel flow-cell of the length equal to approx. 2 m. In the center, two XRF measuring heads (1) and (2) are located. Each of the heads comprises a rigid waterproof cover (3) with the mylar window (4), in which a proportional counter of resolution 15% for 6.4 keV is mounted with a preamplifier (5). D, MICHAELSON*-The method of determining the efficacy of a separation described in this paper, gives the metallurgist a most useful guide for keeping his ship on an even keel When the ore Waves vary from placid seas to high breakers. Now that such a method of evaluating metallurgical efficiency has been developed and proven practical, it Would seem logical to introduce the next, and more final, factor of Economic Efficiency. I choose to define this term as the percentage ratio of net return from milling to the theoretical maximum net return. The actual operating cost subtracted from the actual mill return represents the net actual amount received for the material treated. Experienced operators of most plants Would ordinarily have enough data on hand to estimate a theoretical milling cost per ton, based on labor, power, supplies and maintenance When operating at maximum tonnage With minimum trouble and under ideal ore conditions. When this theoretical estimated cost is subtracted from the theoretical maximum ore return (calculated by Pallanch's method) the resulting figure is the maximum theoretical net amount the mill operator could hope to realize in processing the ore. The percentage ratio of these sums, of actual to theoretical, is the economic efficiency of the operations. This economic efficiency, if determined on the basis of a fixed market price for metal and similarly fixed base rates for labor, power and supplies, Will reflect the effect of changes in milling practice, labor efficiency and equipment condition. When computations made on the basis of actual current rates for labor, power and supplies are compared With similar actual figures for past periods they will show forcefully how energetic our hunt must be to develop man saving controls, more effective metallurgy, and better equipment to maintain profitable operations. Such computations also offer a simple means of determining how much more labor, supplies and power can be put into the mill operation to obtain an increase in metallurgical recovery at a profit.

Since 1911, when J. L. Dunn first used compressed air for repressuring depleted oil sands in southeast Ohio, the rejuvenation of many depleted oil fields has been directly due to repressuring by means of air or gas. Developments in repressuring in recent years have resulted in its successful use in the early life of some deep, high-pressure oil fields, conserving the natural gas dissolved in and associated with the oil by returning it to the producing oil sand after it has been compressed above the existing rock pressure of the reservoir. One of the most successful operations of this type is that of the Humble Oil & Refining Co., on the DeWalt salt dome at Sugarland, Texas. I quote from a personal communication with reference to this field: "Structurally, the field is dome-shaped, having a closure of approximately 350 ft. Production comes from a sandy shale interbedded with a clean sand and lying over a cap rock which is about 3400 ft. deep on top of the structure." A feature of the operation of this field is the production of the required amount of oil with the minimum of gas production. Wells on top of the dome have high gas-oil ratios, while those down structure have lower ratios, depending upon the distance of the well from the peak. To date, it has been possible to produce the oil needed from the wells circling the dome above the water zone and below the gas zone, and in this manner the average gas-oil ratio has been kept low. The gas from all separators is turned into a gas system which serves the entire field. From this system, all drilling rigs and utilities requiring gas for a fuel draw their requirements, and the remainder of the gas (about two-thirds of the production) is delivered to a compressor plant which boosts the pressure until it can be returned to the sand at the top of the dome where the rock pressure is 1400 lb, per square inch. "The Sugarland wells produce through 2-in. tubing with a 3/8-in. choke in one wing of the well-head manifold. The pressure builds up as high as 1300 lb, per square inch on the casing while on the tubing it varies from 0 to 900 lb. per square inch, depending upon the amount of gas produced with the oil."

Dry room equipment at Donora Zinc Works is of the design which prevailed at the time the plant was built in 1915. It consists of 11 adjoining rooms, each being 99 ft long, 11 ft wide, and 7 ft high and having a capacity for 1040 retorts. Heat is supplied by steam coils beneath the slatted wood floor and by warm air ducts at the ceiling. Drying practice is about the same as that generally followed in the industry except that, under normal zinc furnace operations, the maximum drying time is 45 days. During certain seasons of the year the drying process was seriously affected by varying weather conditions which frequently resulted in a scrap loss of 5 to 7 pct. Because of these unfavorable conditions, which caused uneven drying and strains in the retorts, increased retort failures in the zinc furnaces were recorded. Regulation of temperature and humidity under all conditions appeared to be the logical solution of this problem. Controlled drying had been developed for a number of ceramic products and investigation of several such drying processes in this area revealed favorable results. Along with control of drying conditions and the attendant decrease in scrap losses, plant operators also reported a material reduction in drying time. Another factor affecting the decision to proceed with this development was the drastic change in market conditions for retort clay. Curtailment of shipments from the chief source of supply made it necessary to proceed with blending of other available clays, but quality of these clays was questionable for adequate retort life in the 24 hr furnace cycle. Rapid furnace testing of new mixtures was desirable but impossible with the prolonged drying schedule. Therefore development of a controlled drying process for zinc re- torts offered the solution to the problem of rapid testing of retort mixtures. Description of Process and Equipment The freshly extruded retort is cylindrical in shape, 58 in. long, 9 in. id and has 1 1/8 in. side walls. One end is closed and approximately 2 in. thick. The moisture content of this "green" retort is about 17 pct which means a necessary removal of 30 lb of water per retort. Retorts are set on the slatted floor of the dry room with the closed end down. The controlled drying process depends upon the circulation of a large volume of conditioned air at low velocity. On the map of Europe the shield-shaped area included in the boundaries of Rumania appears too small to constitute a very important factor in the wold's oil production. The country has a total area of 122,000 square miles of territory, about one-fifth of 1 per cent. of the world's surface, from which about 21/2 per cent. of the world's oil was produced in 1929. This relatively small area also constitutes one of the known billion-barrel reserves of the world. Oil has been found in various localities in the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains, extending more than 100 miles in length at their base. It is rather unusual that, while the extent of prospective territory seems to be large, the area of the commercially productive pools is comparatively small. Oil accumulation in Rumania is closely associated with salt stocks. Shows of oil are encountered from the Pliocene down to the Cretaceous. Most of the production, however, comes from the Pliocene, the chief producing sands of which are the Dacic and the Meotic, although some oil is produced from the Levantic and the Pontic. The Meotic as a source of oil was known for many years, but the intensive output from this sand series is a comparatively recent development and accounts in a big measure for the steady increase in Rumanian production. In the early part of the summer of 1929 the Astra-Romano (Royal Dutch) completed a well at Moreni in what is thought by some to be a fourth Meotic sand (a new sand series) at a depth of 5200 ft. with an initial production of 2000 bbl. a day of 41" gravity oil. The development of this new horizon has been somewhat retarded by the disastrous fire which occurred at Romano-Americana's well No. 160 in Moreni, but its discovery adds materially to the future life of the Moreni area, one of the country's oldest fields. Rumania's production for 1929 is estimated at 35,556,000 bbl., a daily average of 97,400 bbl. This compares with the total of 31,542,000 bbl. for the previous year, a daily average of 86,180 bbl., or an increase of 12.73 per cent. Rumania now occupies seventh position in the world's oil picture, it having been replaced as the sixth in importance by the Dutch East Indies in 1929. Table 1 shows a comparison of production by districts and fields.

THE death, on May 6, 1908, of Dr. Hermann Wedding, Privy Mining Councilor of the Kingdom of Prussia, and Professor of the Metallurgy of Iron and Steel at the Royal Mining Academy of Berlin, was a loss keenly felt by the whole metallurgical world. Not alone in his native land, but also in foreign countries did he enjoy an esteem of which the title of honorary membership in the American Institute of Mining Engineers, the United States Association of Charcoal Iron-Workers, and the (British) Iron and Steel Institute bears eloquent testimony. Hermann Wedding was born March 9, 1834, in Berlin. At the suggestion of Dr. C. J. B. Karsten, the veteran father of Prussian metallurgy and author of the first German text-book of the metallurgy of iron, lie turned his attention, after gradu¬ating from the gymnasium, to mining and metallurgy. In 1853, he began a practical course at the Malapane iron-works, in Upper Silesia. Subsequently, he studied at the Berlin Mining Academy, and received from the University in 1859 the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. A journey which be made to England, somewhat later, led to his undertaking a German translation, with revision and additions, of John Percy's classic treatise on the metallurgy of iron and steel, the publication of which, in successive installments, stretched through many years. In 1863, lie published, as a thesis in connection with his "Assessor's examination," an essay, entitled The Results of the Bessemer Process for the Production of Steel, and Its Prospects for the Rhenish and Westphalian Iron and Steel Industry, which revealed such ability and knowledge as to secure for him a call to the chair of metallurgy in the Berlin Mining Academy.

The article unfortunately has some serious flaws negating the usefulness of the paper. The authors claim that kriging (linear kriging) is superior to other methods such as polygon. This is not the case. The deterministic methods (referring to polygon, ID, IDS, etc.) should not be compared with the statistical methods (linear kriging, disjunctive kriging, etc.) because they differ not only in their assumptions, but also their tools used in estimation. Thus, they give different results. By comparing the results of deterministic methods and linear kriging, the authors conclude that polygon, IDS, and linear kriging give an average thickness close to the value obtained from realizations. Besides, they argue that linear kriging gives less variance than the others [(fig. 2)]. The first conclusion is expected, due to the well-known central limit theorem. The second is the result of the statistical properties of different estimators. Thus, the comparison presented in the paper is rather meaningless because the authors have failed to follow basic statistical procedures. The numerical results of different approaches to an estimation problem cannot be generalized. In conclusion, the paper is not a meaningful contribution, and sadly, quite erroneous.
