UNQUESTIONABLY, manufactured gas will stage a comeback of such huge proportions as to dwarf its previous history. Timing will depend on two things: the diminishing supply of natural gas and the perfecting of processes for large-scale production of high-Btu gas from, coal. What the timing will be, and how soon the new era will begin for manufactured gas, no one knows. It may be just around the corner and it may be several years, but it is certain to come. It will depend on economic changes, and any major world upheaval might accelerate it tremendously. Supplemental gas for pipelines will come no doubt from two sources at least: (1) synthetic-fuel plants of the coal-chemical group, which produce chemicals and liquid fuels with a tail gas high in methane as a by-product; and (2) large-scale gasification plants, which will produce high-Btu gas entirely or as a major product with chemicals and liquid fuels as by-products. There is important activity at the present time, in the development of new processes and the improvement of those now in existence. The first large-scale gasification plants of the second category probably will be strategically located in the coal fields on or near the long-distance transmission gas lines, and these plants probably will operate jointly with large natural gas storage fields. Inasmuch as virtually all the major gas-transmission lines cross one or more coal fields, such locations will not be difficult to find. It will be a practical necessity to produce a high-Btu gas -that is, 750 to 1000 Btu-in order to maintain the capacity of the main transmission lines and local city distribution systems and further to eliminate the problem of appliance changeovers in the cities. If gasification plants on a medium or smaller scale prove to be economical, local gas utilities no doubt will consider .the construction of such plants to supplement their supply of natural gas. If low-temperature distillation processes like those now being developed by the Pittsburgh Consolidation Coal Co. are successful, and there is reason to believe that they will be, utilities that supply both gas and electricity to communities would find this method particularly attractive, as they could burn the char product directly under power boilers, thereby minimizing thermal

THE Pittsburgh seam in eastern Ohio has an average thickness of 5 ft and lies almost level Immediately above it is a layer of draw slate about 12 in thick, which normally has little structural strength, and is pulled down or allowed to fall as mining progresses Above the slate is a, variable thickness of roof coal, which in places will stand for the life of the working section and sometimes for the life of a secondary haulage entry The thickness of this roof coal varies from zero to 24 in In general, however, it does not provide a satisfactory roof, and usually is supported or pulled down About it is a mass of shale, soapstone and clay, of quite variable thickness, usually running from 5 to 8 ft and above this is a stratum of hard blue limestone, which provides a permanent roof Where entries are to be used for less than five years, the roof usually can be supported by wood or steel crossbars, but if they are to be used for a longer time, roof support is a serious problem All the roof material below the limestone disintegrates when exposed to air or moisture, and in a few years falls out between and over the crossbars Where this material is removed for a considerable height above the coal, the ribs scale and thus contribute to a further collapse of the roof As the height of the entry increases, cost of timbering is greatly increased, a problem that always is encountered where old entries are recovered or repaired METHODS During the last six years the Hanna Coal Co has used gunite for roof protection in mine entries Two general methods of guniting are practiced The first consists of the application of a I-in coating of unreinforced material This application does not provide any appreciable structural strength, and serves principally to protect the strata from exposure to air and moisture With the other method a coat at least 2 in thick is applied and provided with suitable reinforcing, which provides a structural strength proportional to the thickness of the coat and the reinforcing used The first method is adopted as a general practice, modified only where additional support is required "Gunite" is a mixture of cement, sand and water * The cement and sand are thoroughly mixed and screened before being fed into the hopper of a cement gun After the hopper lid is closed, compressed air is applied to force this dry mixture through the hose line to the nozzle, where the quantity of water needed to effect the proper hydration of the cement is added The coating is dense, and stronger than poured concrete

THE differentiation of, oxidized forms of lead from lead sulphide in complex products by chemical analysis is of considerable importance to certain mining and metallurgical companies. A method for the separation of "oxide" lead, (non-sulphide), from sulphide lead, based on the solubility of the former and virtual insolubility of the latter in concentrated ammonium acetate solution, has been employed for many years in the industry.1,2 Unfortunately this solvent, while satisfactory for lead sulphate and carbonate, is without action on lead phosphates or vanadates, with the result that at Rhodesia Broken Hill Development Co. where these latter minerals are present, they have counted as sulphides when using this procedure. For the control of operations in the new concentrator it became necessary to have a closer check on sulphide lead than could be obtained by the only current method of differentiating this constituent from oxidized lead. For some time this problem has engaged our attention, and after a large number of solvents had been tried, the following procedure was evolved. Like all methods depending on selective solution in a complex material, it will not give 100 pct separation into oxide and sulphide portions. Because of the ease of oxidation of galena this is almost an impossibility. Our procedure will, however, give a recovery of 99-100 pct of the oxidized lead, contaminated with very small quantities of lead sulphide, and a corresponding recovery of 97-98 pct of the sulphide lead. The procedure is simple and reproducible, and gives results quite satisfactory for routine control purposes. EXPERIMENTAL For this work standard samples of the following pure lead minerals were obtained from Broken Hill, Northern Rhodesia. These were hand-picked specimens, and were carefully ground to - 200 mesh. Since it was realized that a fair-sized sample would be necessary for this work to thoroughly test the large number of procedures we had in mind, a compromise had to be effected between a few grams of very pure minerals and a large sample of lower grade material. For this work the presence of gangue was not deleterious, so long as the oxide lead minerals did not contain lead sulphide, and vice versa. Table I shows the lead minerals used, and their total lead content, both theoretical and actual. Apart from the pyromorphite the minerals are seen by analysis to be quite pure. I HAVE been asked to discuss "What Can be Done to Revive the Mining Industry," particularly from the standpoint of the copper industry. It is impossible to consider this problem, if in fact there can be one, from an isolated position. The mining industry is but a part, although a very important one, of that exceedingly complicated machine characterized as commerce, which comprises within its operation and functions the-multitudinous activities that, combined, make up the sum total of the production, manufacture, distribution, sale and utilization of goods and products resulting from the agrarian, industrial and commercial effort of mankind. We survey a world today with its disturbed mass of humanity permeated with discontent, passions loosened by brutal combat not yet brought under control, class hatreds aroused, national prejudices in a state of stimu-lated excitement, governments for the most part enfeebled, some destroyed to their foundations, with fragile structures raised in place of those that seemed enduring, and which have disappeared. A burden of indebtedness incurred in defiance of all economic law exists, to meet the exactions of which, levies of taxation that constitute a grievous burden upon effort and industry are exacted by the needs of those nations that are most favored, while printing presses are busy manufacturing currency that either has, or approaches, a negative value among those less favored. This picture, while not pleasant, is one that should be looked at squarely and carefully appraised in estimating the immediate future. For four years the world marshalled, and exerted without stint, its combined endurance, vitality and resource in an effort of destruction, which violated no less the orderly working of physical and economic laws than it did the conventions of social and civic relations. To have imagined that without travail the orderly processes that governed the relations of mankind could at once be reestablished and begin functioning, was, as has been demonstrated, fallacious; perhaps no more so than the error that is committed today by those opportunists who fail to take cogni-zance of basic conditions which must be remedied be-fore the world can resume its progress to a universally prosperous and satisfactory condition. Please do not gather from this somewhat unpleasant recital that I regard the future with gloomy foreboding or entertain pessimistic doubts, for, emphatically, I do not.

This is part of a research project in the Metals Research Laboratory of Carnegie Institute of Technology, sponsored by the Carnegie-Illinois Steel Corporation. In organizing our program it became apparent that the problem of analyzing molten steel for hydrogen must be divided into two parts: (I) the correct analysis of a given sample, and (2) the correct sampling of the bath. Emphasis has been placed upon these divisions in the order named because methods of sampling cannot be evaluated until a satisfactory method of analysis is available. Vacuum fusion was selected from the list of possible analytical methods because it seemed to us to offer the best possibilities for giving rapid, accurate results on solid steel samples. A number of objections have been raised against this method as usually practiced. We have sought to meet some of these by proper design of the apparatus. Experiments will be described which show that others are not valid. In the conventional apparatus the sample is held under high vacuum for a period of several hours before it is actually analyzed and one might expect considerable hydrogen to escape during this period. We have provided a means of introducing the sample to the vacuum just before analysis. Another difficulty has been that the entire apparatus has been designed primarily for the purpose of analyzing for oxygen, which constitutes upward of go per cent of the total gases evolved from the sample The volume and pressure measurements have therefore been insensitive to the relatively small amounts of hydrogen present. This difficulty obviously can be taken into account in any apparatus designed especially for the amounts of hydrogen expected. Analysis in Vacuum-fusion Apparatus A number of experiments were carried out to determine the importance of several factors that have been stated as possible sources of error or uncertainty in vacuum-fusion analysis for hydrogen; namely, that hot graphite will absorb some of the gases, that metal vapor will cause discrepancies, and that low results may be obtained as a result of the water vapor (produced by the oxidation of the hydrogen) dissolving in the butyl phthalate of the manometer, or that the blanks obtained from the apparatus are so great as to make the method inaccurate. The experiments also checked on the accuracy and feasibility of using differential freezing as a method of gas analysis in a vacuum-fusion apparatus.

THE past twenty-five years has been a period of unparalleled improvement in all lines of mining and metallurgical equipment, but probably none has undergone greater refinement and development than the vacuum filter. Beginning a quarter of a century ago, there has been steady advancement in the art of vacu-um filtration until today its use has become virtually standard practice for dewatering throughout the entire metallurgical industry as well as in important parts of the chemical and industrial processing fields. The credit for the first successful application of vacuum filtration 'at the Consolidated Mercury mines in Utah in 1902 undoubtedly belongs to George Moore. There, it is said, his filter reduced the loss of gold in the slime and sand from $1.25 to 40c. per ton. Successful applications were subsequently made by Mr. Moore at the Liberty Bell mines, Telluride, Colo., the Lundberg, Dorr &Wilson mill at Terry, S. D., and elsewhere. E. L. Oliver is generally credited with, having done the most to work out the necessary continuity of op-eration exemplified in the well-known continuous vacu-um filter which bears his name. Others made improve-ments also, but in my opinion all the new ideas advanced in recent years are modifications of the fundamental principles originated by the two pioneers, Moore and Oliver. Considerable interest has been shown recently in the new type of continuous internal-type vacuum filter which is associated with my own name1. In response to frequent inquiries regarding it and the steps which led up to its invention, I am giving herewith a brief account of the early history of this development and some of the more important installations which have been made during the last year or so. A. M. Nicholas (now deceased), an Australian engi-neer, conceived the idea, several years ago, of manu-facturing a continuous vacuum filter with the filter medium applied upon the inside of the drum, as con-trasted with existing drum filters in which the medium is applied externally. Nicholas recognized that a ma-chine of this type would be simpler than one with a tank and would overcome some of the difficulties en-countered with tank filters on certain classes of pulps, and he appreciated the value of having filtration take place in the same direction as the gravitational settle-ment of the solid particles in the pulp, the pulp being retained within the drum instead of being held against the outside surface. The ease of starting up after a shut down was likewise realized by Nicholas. It was tried in the United States, but was not entirely success-ful primarily due to mechanical defects.

The following tests were made, during 1889, for the Susquehanna Coal Company, to determine the relative efficiency of several styles of mine-car wheels in use at their collieries at Nanticoke, Pa. The wheels experimented upon may be divided into two classes: The "old style" (Figs. 1 and 2), which are oiled at every trip; and the "new style" (Figs. 3, 4, and 5), which require oiling about once in two to four months. Fig. 1 shows a section of a plain cast wheel, with patent annular oil-chamber. This is held in position on the axle by a square, split cotter-pin. Fig. 2 is a similar wheel, with a patent cast bushing, which is readily replaced when worn. The lubrication is effected by a simple oil-hole, but the oil is delivered a little inside of the gaugeline of the wheel, where it is most needed. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are sections of a " new style " patented, self-oiling wheel. In this, the outer end is cast closed, and the wheel is fastened to the axle by a spring cotter-pin passed through one of the plugged holes. Dirt is prevented from entering the open end by a cap, with faced end and packing-ring, fitting over the end of the hub. The lubricant is introduced into the oil-chamber through one of the plugged holes in the hub. INVESTIGATION of the nickel-rich end of the Ni-Zr system has been prompted by an interest in the effect of small amounts of zirconium in high temperature alloys. Hansenl presents a hypothetical diagram based on the work of Allibone and Sykes,2 who investigated the system up to 44 atomic pct (55 wt pct) Zr by metallographic means. Since the alloys they used were melted in Alundum crucibles they were probably contaminated with appreciable amounts of aluminum. They found two compounds which they called Ni3Zr and Ni4Zr. Hayes, Roberson, and Paasche3 identified a compound NiZr (50 atomic pct Zr) with a melting point of 1470°C. Such a high melting compound is not compatible with the observation of Allibone and Sykes2 hat a eutectic is formed near 50 atomic pct. The alloys containing up to 60 atomic pct Zr were melted in an inert atmosphere in a noncon-sumable electrode arc furnace. Analysis of most of the alloys indicated negligible loss of zirconium. The alloys were examined in the as-cast condition and also after annealing for 6 hr at 1175°C (or 1000°C for the alloys between 25 atomic pct and 45 atomic pct). Metallographic specimens were etched using mixtures of HF-HNO3-H2O or acetic acid- HN0,-H,O. The specimens for the solidus determinations were wrapped in molybdenum foil and sealed in evacuated quartz tubes. Specimens to be heated above 1300°C were enclosed in zirconia tubes inside the quartz to prevent reaction with molybdenum. The solidus determinations were carried out by heating the specimens at various temperatures for a few minutes and then examining the interior structure metallographically to determine at what temperature melting began. The 150 mesh powders for X-ray analysis were annealed in an evacuated quartz tube for 2 hr at 540 °C to remove cold work. Alloys with 22.5 atomic pct Zr and 44.4 atomic pct Zr required annealing at 700 °C for complete recovery. The grains of both of these alloys were soft and rather ductile. Both Debye-Scherrer film patterns and spectrometer traces were made for each alloy using filtered copper radiation. Results and Discussion The presence of a substantial amount of second phase in an alloy with 1.1 atomic pct Zr indicated that the solid solubility of zirconium in nickel is somewhat less than 1 atomic pct. The a0 value for the face-centered-cubic matrix in the same alloy was equal to that of pure nickel, so that the solubility must be very small. This observation is as expected from the large atom size difference. Annealed specimens of alloys with 15.0, 16.7, 22.5, 28.6, 44.4, and 59.4 atomic pct Zr showed. micro-structures that were essentially single phase. When

IN the western mines, the boss, engineer, geologist, or nipper in making rounds have a password which usually guarantees safe entrance to a working place from below the working miner. Most men won't climb a raise or enter a stope from below where a miner is working until they have shouted "nothin' down" and heard those words shouted back by the miners above. "Nothin' down" is a safety pledge as necessary and as binding as the truce flag to the soldier. It implies mutual confidence that work will be suspended until the person below has come abreast of the workers; and also confidence that the miner who replies "nothin' down" is reasonably sure the place is safe to enter. Like truce flags which are not infallible, so is this password subject to human errors or unexpected falls of rock, tools, or timber. Everyone knows these unavoidable hazards, but what is important to the exposed man is that in that precise moment of time when he has heard the reassurance of "nothin' down," he knows that safety is uppermost in the minds of the men above him. With such assurance we would go anywhere and so would most mining men. If that period of safety consciousness, procured by the utterance of two words, could be multiplied to equal the hours in the working day, there would not be any accidents but those by "the act of God." It is the aim of every safety program to make safety as natural as breathing. That is the reason for the posters, the conferences, instruction periods, safety engineers, and the inspections. But none of these are as effective as one accident, which keeps men on their toes for weeks to come. This is not the price we want to pay for safety consciousness. This Annual Review number of Mining Engineering is full of talk about production. Production for defense, production for profit. In this tremendous surge of industrial might . to make this nation and our very families safe S from the predatory forces abroad in the world today; let us not lose sight of the fact that the . safety of our manpower is more precious than any commodity. Production without safety is detrimental to the national interest, to that of the company, and to the individual. If the words "nothin' down" can give us the best human guarantee of safety, for however brief a time, let us adopt them at least in principle as our slogan in 1952. Production for preservation in '52 - but NOTHIN' DOWN!

ONE of the more pressing problems faced by the coal industry today is the development of adequate means for meeting conservation laws, particularly those involving stream pollution, in various parts of the country. Discharge of dirty coal washery water into streams and rivers is almost universally frowned upon. Many states have enacted laws carrying heavy fines to curb the practice. The Prins stream-cleaner is one of the latest machines to enter the market. It is closely related to the cyclone thickener in principle. Eleven stream-cleaners are currently operating, ranging in size from 4 to 16 in. diam. In more recent installations the water enters directly in line and on a tangent with the impeller. The impeller consists of a vertical shaft up through a packing gland and bearings, and a V-belt pulley. The lower part is a tubing fastened to the shaft above, extending through the water intake compartment and provided with six vertical flat bars welded to the tubing. Portholes are situated in the upper end of the tubing, immediately below the point where shaft and tubing join together. The portholes are placed so that they are in open communication with the upper compartment of the stream-cleaner from which the processed water is discharged. The impeller is motor driven with a wide range vari-pitch drive employed between motor and impeller. The motor is mounted vertically, and the mounting provided with a vertical hinge allowing for needed adjustment of the wide range vari-pitch drive. The dirty coal washery water entering the machine under 20 lb psi pressure, flows from the compartment above the impeller, between the impeller blades, and is whirled around in the vertical section of the impeller enclosure. The speed of the impeller supplies centrifugal force and velocity required for separating suspended solids from water. The lower part of the machine consists of a cone, whose action is similar to other machines of the same type. The underflow discharge orifice is a cold rolled steel block machined to correspond with the cone angle and allows insertion of steel tubes of different diam. On 16 in. machines a 1 ¾ in. ID vertical discharge pipe is used. Provision is made for attaching a curved section of the same diam to the vertical pipe, to which, in turn, different lengths of horizontal pipe can be connected. Curved Pipe Advantageous It has been found that a curved pipe offers resistance to discharged material flow. In addition, the rotary motion of the underflow can be easily arrested in a curved pipe. Impeller speed of the 16 in. diam machine is provided from 400 to 800 rpm. A speed of about 474 rpm is suitable for maintenance of a constant underflow in coal slurry. In one installation 5x ¼ in. coal is cleaned in a Jeffrey Baum type washer at a 225 tons per hr rate. Washer installation is of the conventional type and a drag type sludge tank is used for water clarification purposes. Capacity of the water system, including the Baum washer, is about 40,000 gal. Before placing the stream-cleaner in operation, it was necessary to flush out the entire system every five days of two shift operations. The only time the system is drained now is for repair work on the sludge conveyor or the rig. The suction line of the stream-cleaner pump terminates in a number of small branch lines located at a depth of about 4 ft above the sludge conveyor. Each branch line extends the full width of the tank and is provided with four intake ports, each one with a funnel shaped inlet projecting downward. The arrangement provides an extensive pick-up area, for dirty water, and the inlets are arranged for a low rim velocity, preventing the taking in of coarse particles. The funnels are also arranged to extend up or down in the tank. They are set to pick up -60 mesh material exclusively.' The material is a high ash and high sulphur product and thus has to be disposed in the refuse conveyor. The underflow of the stream-cleaner is discharged on top of the washery refuse which is carried in a drag type horizontal conveyor, discharging into another refuse conveyor inclined at 30º with a short horizontal loading section. Some Disadvantages The impeller inherits certain disadvantages because of the nature of its construction. Additional moving parts make it subject to wear and maintenance costs. The advantage of being able to maintain a constant speed, however, to produce desired water velocity in the machine outweighs the drawbacks. Better separation between water and solids can be obtained by regulating time of residence of water through adjustment of valves in the intake and discharge lines. The amount of fines encountered during plant operation will vary because of higher or lower moisture in coal passing over fine coal vibrating screens. Even the amount of fines picked up by underground loading machines will be inconstant. Consequently, the percentage of solids will vary in water to be processed. The velocity in the feedlines to the slurry thickeners will fluctuate, with the required water velocity lacking. Another advantage advanced for the machine is its ability to operate on 15 to 25 lb line pressures at the water intake, reducing pump power required and pump maintenance.

Butte mining district contains extensive manganese vein deposits forming a peripheral zone. Oxidation in the veins studied usually extends to a depth of about 75 ft. Secondary minerals formed by oxidation were found to be ramsdellite—always accompanied by intermixed pyrolusite—and cryptomelane. Enrichment of the gossan is accomplished by reduction of weight upon oxidation; theoretical enrichment is 32.2 pct. Additional enrichment is caused by leaching of soluble minerals, particularly calcium and magnesium carbonates. BUTTE mining district contains extensive manganese vein deposits in the outer zone, surrounding the copper and zinc deposits and corresponding to the well known silver zone. This article describes the mineralogy of the manganese veins, the oxidation and enrichment processes, and the use of this information in prospecting. Information was derived from a study of the Emma, Star West, Tzarena, and Norwich mines, selected as representative of the district. Vein exposures at these mines were mapped, studied, and sampled on the outcrops and throughout the oxidized zone. Specimens were cut and polished for minera-graphic examination, identification, and textural studies. Knowledge of the manganese oxide minerals is scanty, previous information having been rendered obsolete by publication of the first correctly identified list of manganese oxide minerals by Fleischer and Richmond in 1943. Positive identification of the manganese oxides is possible only by X-ray analysis. Identifications for this study were made by the author with a Phillip's Diffractometer at the Montana School of Mines and confirmed by Lester Zeihen of The Anaconda Co., using a Norelco X-ray camera. It was necessiary to re-evaluate some X-ray data, as published patterns of several manganese oxides proved to be of mixtures, mostly showing pyrolusite as a contaminant. Perhaps the most useful information on oxidation and enrichment of manganese is presented in recent books by Goldschmidt1 and Rankama and Sahama.2 While their hypotheses are not conclusively proved, all laboratory and field evidence has served to substantiate them. This information was very useful in this study. Mineralogy: The primary minerals of the manganese veins are chiefly rhodochrosite and quartz. Rhodonite is abundant in the northern part of the district and in places has been found to comprise over a third of the vein matter. A variable but generally small amount of sulfides may be present, principally pyrite and silver minerals. Sphalerite is progressively more abundant near the zinc zone. Rhodochrosite is believed to form complete iso-morphous series with siderite, ankerite, and calcite. Some variation into these compositions is common, and the intermediate forms are termed manganosid-erite, manganankerite, and rnanganocalcite. Much of the rhodochrosite is remarkably pure. Other manganese minerals in the district include huebner-ite, alabandite, and helvite. Ramsdellite (MnO2, orthorhnmbic) is the principal manganese oxide mineral, comprising perhaps two-thirds of the total oxides. It is dull to iron black, and generally massive or platy in structure. A prominent platy cleavage is the only distinguishing megascopic characteristic. Pyrolusite (MnO2, tetragonal) is next most abundant to ramsdellite, with which it is usually intimately mixed. The luster is often brighter or more metallic than in ramsdellite, and needle-like crystals are diagnostic. Pyrolusite is common in small cavities formed by oxidation of pyrite grains. It is relatively abundant in zones of high limonite content. Cryptomelane (KMnO16 tetragonal ?) is rare in the outcrop, but becomes more abundant with depth. At depths of several hundred feet it is the principal oxide. Although its appearance varies, a blue-black flinty luster and blocky to conchoidal fracture are most common. A potassium flame test will identify this mineral. Hardness of all three oxides varies from 2 to 6. The three are quite commonly intermixed, and their textures can vary greatly. The commonest textures are massive or colloform, representative of colloidal deposition, or vuggy and boxwork textures, formed by partial leaching and oxidation in place. A box-work of either ramsdellite or chalcedony is formed after rhodochrosite rhombs and is indicative of ore shoots in this district. Some replacement of both quartz and the granitic wallrock by ramsdellite has been noted, but most of the oxide was deposited as a fissure filling by fine particles. No trace of manganite, hausmannite, braunite, or manganosite was found. No minerals of the psilome-lane group were detected besides cryptomelane. Amorphous MnO, was found at several spots. A specimen of oxide coated with yellow barite crystals was amorphous and not psilomelane (BaMn9O18. 2H2O). Voids formed by the leaching of sphalerite were coated with cryptomelane, not hetaerolite (ZnMn2O4) as might be expected. THE native methods of mining and milling gold-ores in Korea may not present any specially new features, but are chiefly interesting as primitive practices, still followed at the present day. In mining where the rock is hard, wood is piled up near the face of the tunnel or drift and then set on fire. The fire bums for twenty-four hours, after which, three or four days are given for the rocks to cool, before the miners go in and extract the loosened material. The only tools in use are a hammer, a steel gad about five inches long, and a flat spoon-shaped basket. The pay-streak or chute is closely followed, and in places the workings are very small and intricate. Rock not yielding more than $6 per ton is not extracted. The manner of opening a mine is to begin on the outcrop, where the rock pays, sink a shaft or run a tunnel on the vein, and follow the pay-streak and more easily worked ore. When this is exhausted, or the influx of water interferes, the opening is abandoned and operations are begun again at a new spot on the outcrop. The place usually selected is as high up on the mountain as possible, and in no instance is advantage taken of the topography by running a cross-tunnel to tap the vein. The ore is brought in baskets to the surface, and there placed in sacks, holding about 150 1bs. each, and taken to be crushed. The rock is first crushed between two stones, as shown in Fig. 1. The upper stone is oval and rounded on the bottom, so that it can be readily rocked on the under stone. Two pieces of wood, used for handles, are placed, one on each side, in grooves in the upper stone, and held in position by means of straw rope. The lower stone is not smooth on top, but exhibits three elevations running lengthwise, with shallow depressions between them. The middle elevation acts as a fulcrum on which the upper stone may be rocked. From two to ten men, according to the weight and size of the stone used, are employed in rocking. With four men, from 300 to 350 lbs. of rock can be crushed per day, the stone making 50 complete oscillations per minute. The men squat on each side of the stone and move it to and fro by means of the wooden handles. The ore is fed, in pieces up to the size of an egg or even larger, by one of the men. MR. NEILSON was born Aug. 12, 1842, at Philadelphia, Pa., where he died Dec. 30, 1906. His business career began with his graduation, in the class of 1862, from the Polytechnic College of the State of Pennsylvania. For a short time after graduation he was instructor in mathematics at the college, and then became associated with Messrs. Booth & Garrett, chemists, of his native city: In 1867 he was sent to the Adirondack mountains to care for mining interests of the late Jay Cooke, and spent about three years there, operating the forges at Elizabethtown, Essex county, N. Y. He also prepared an interesting monograph on Catalan forges and their operations. In 1868 he published a chart showing the material progress of the United States, and the cost of certain staple products during a series of years, which is believed to be the first of its kind issued in this country. In 1870 he made a trip to the Pacific Coast, prior to entering the service of the Pennsylvania Steel Company. In 1871, when the Logan Iron & Steel Co., of Burnham, Pa., failed, Mr. Neilson was appointed receiver, re-organized the company, became' its General Manager, and spent more than four years in this work. In the meantime, he became interested in the Freedom forge of the same place, and, with Mr. Wm. Burnham and Mr. Milton Brosius, laid the foundations for what is now the Standard Steel Works. From Jan. 1, 1877, to April 1, 1890, he was General Manager of these works, and closely associated with the Baldwin Locomotive Works. In 1878 he was in charge of the first consignment of Baldwin locomotives to Europe, which, with a picked crew of men from Baldwin's, he took to Eydtkennen, Russia, and placed in service. LISTED among strategic and critical minerals for stockpiling, mica is an important raw material in electronic and electrical equipment industries. Each year large quantities are consumed in the manufacture of television and radio tubes, radar sets, generators, transformers, electric toasters, and irons. Crude mica, which comes from the mine in crystals or in rough books of various shapes and sizes, is known as run-of-mine or book mica. Structural imperfections, impurities, rough edges, and defective laminae are removed by cobbing, rifting, and trimming to produce a marketable block mica or film mica.' After the rough books have been hand-cobbed to remove adhering rock, dirt, and crushed or defective mica they are rifted, or split. In the U.S. a straight-bladed knife is generally used for rifting. Products of this operation are classed broadly as untrimmed sheet mica and scrap. Sheet mica is any relatively flat piece sufficiently free from physical defects to be cut or stamped into specified shapes for industrial use. Sheet mica is classed as block, film, and splittings. Block mica is not less than 0.007 in. thick with a minimum usable area of 1 sq in. Film mica is split from the better qualities of block mica to groups of specified thickness ranging from 0.0012 to 0.004 in. Splittings are sheets with maximum thickness of 0.0012 in. and minimum usable area of 3/4 sq in. As virtually no mica splittings are produced in the U.S., they will not be discussed in this report. Small, low quality block is subdivided as punch and washer. Punch mica is thumb-trimmed material large enough to yield a circular disk of at least 11/2 in. diam for stained quality mica and 1 1/4 to 2 in. for clear quality. Poorer lots, often referred to as washer mica, are also included in the general term punch mica. Trimming, the next step in processing sheet mica, removes broken and ragged edges, loose scales, and other major imperfections. Trimming may be done with a knife, sickle, shears, or fingers. In the U.S. it is usually done with a 3-in. linoleum knife to obtain a bevel-edged cut. If ragged edges are broken off with the thumb and fingers, the mica is called thumb-trimmed. WILLIS,* Bisbee, Ariz.-(written discussion?).-The consensus of the discussion of the paper of Dr. Lanza indicates that the physical examination, while it is probably a good thing, is fought by the workingman, and that, because of this fact, it has been proved unsuccessful. The physical examination standing alone is worth but little, and could easily be made a subject both of ridicule and dissension unless the company having such examination shows its own good faith in promoting a thoroughly better health program. It is easily seen why a workman would resent his employer expecting him to be physically fit, if at the same time the employer provides un-healthful, unsanitary, working conditions, or if the town in which the employees are expected to live is dirty and unkempt. One mocks the other. The employer cannot say, "You must remain healthy so that I can get by with unhealthy conditions." But if working- conditions are as good as can be obtained to keep men well, the employer can ask his men to be in a healthy condition. A State examination and standard would have many difficulties, owing to the fact that a man would pass or would not pass the standard set, thus eliminating the discretion on the part of the employer in placing men whose physical condition might well permit working in one place and not another. Any physical examination that is run for the purpose of eliminating the physically unfit is unjust, both to the worker and to the nation as a whole; a State examination would make a distinct dividing line, whereas examination by the employer is conducted with a vision of the positions available. The workman's opposition to the physical examination comes from the fact that he has been taught to believe that it is an interference in his personal affairs, that he can be clean or dirty as he chooses, that he can he healthy or unhealthy, and that it is nobody's business but his own. The war has taught us, however, that the individual is no longer the unit and that all such propositions must be based on the greatest good for the greatest number.

For over 200 years meerschaum has been a significant item of trade between the Near East and countries to the west. Best-known for its use in making smoking pipes and cigar and cigarette holders, it is also used in making a variety of decorative and ornamental items. It is easily carved, and is given an attractive, lustrous finish by rubbing. No published specifications are known, but compact form, purity, uniform whiteness or light color, and uniform, porous texture appear to be requisites. Fig. la shows the appearance of a piece of crude meerschaum from Turkey; [Fig. lb a carved item; and Fig. lc, d, and e] show the fibrous and porous texture as revealed by the scanning electron microscope. Neither a major industrial mineral nor a precious stone, meerschaum nevertheless holds a record of long-and continuing-association with art and personal affairs of man. It is also a mineral to which modern methods of exploration and production probably could be profitably applied. An interesting account of the preparation and use of meerschaum in the early part of this century is given by Sterrett (1907). Geology and Mining Mineralogy Meerschaum is recognized now to be the compact variety of sepiolite, the claylike variety of which is one of the minerals included in the chapter on clays. The word "meerschaum," from the German meaning "sea foam," was in earlier times used synonymously with "sepiolite," a word of Greek origin suggestive of the resemblance of the compact variety-then the only variety known-to cuttlefish bone. At one time "meerschaum" was used as the commercial name, and "sepiolite" for the scientific name. However, to think of meerschaum as the name by which sepiolite is known commercially is no longer valid, in view of the recent emergence of the earthy variety as a competitor of bentonite and other clay materials. Present tendency is to restrict the term "meerschaum" to the compact variety, and to use the term "sepiolite" as a more general name to include both the compact and earthy varieties. This is the terminology followed in this publication.

The cams at present universally used in stamp mills lift the tappets with an involute form of curve, to which the surface of the tappet is always tangent; moreover, the line of contact between tappet and cam, if produced, would pass through the center of the stem. This is no doubt a desirable feature, but the writer has long believed that it would be much more desirable if the cam were to pick up the stamp without shock, and gradually increase the upward velocity of the stamp throughout its upward movement. The involute form of cam attempts to impart instantly a considerable upward velocity to the stamp, starting it from a state of rest, and the result is a destructive blow, a great deal of noise, and much wear and vibration. The writer has developed a form of cam which will lift the stamp pith a motion similar to that of the piston of an engine between the end and middle of its stroke; in other words, harmonic motion, from the woint of zero to maximum velocity. The curve will give this ideal motion only when the stamp is set for the exact drop for which the cam was designed, but the improved cam will not be as bad as the involute cam until the drop is reduced one-half. In other words, if a cam is designed for a 6-in. drop, it will be some improvement over the usual form of cam until the drop is only 3 in. Any cam, whatever its form, must of course lift the stamp in the same number of degrees of revolution; therefore, with this new form, since the stamp starts more slowly on its upward course, it must end up by going faster, the average speed being the same as with the involute cam. The stamp, after it is no longer in contact with the cam, keeps on going up a certain distance, which is easily calculated. It is therefore possible to hang up a stamp without a cam stick, if the fingers are not more than + in. longer than necessary to hold the tappet above, the cam. With this design of cam the surface of the tappet is not tangent to the surface of the cam throughout the lift. The income of the Institute is derived from dues, subscriptions to Mining and Metallurgy and sale of publications. These sources are fortunately supplemented by the interest from invested funds now amounting to over $500,000, a considerable portion constituting endowments for especial purposes. Aside from the medal funds the principal endowments are the James Douglas Fund for support of the Library, the Rocky Mountain Fund and the Seeley W. Mudd Memorial Fund. The income from the two last named is available for the support of research and a variety of other purposes, It is allocated by the Board of Directors upon recommendation of standing committees in each case. An active effort is being made to increase the endowments of the Institute, it being felt that unusual opportunities exist for research and public and professional service through the organization and at a minimum of expense. J. V. W. Reynders is chairman of the Endowment Committee. Seeley W. Mudd Memorial Fund THE Seeley W. Mudd Memorial Fund, consisting of $100,000, was given the Institute in 1929 by the family of Colonel Mudd who had served the Institute as Director, Vice-president and on many important committees. His long career of distinguished professional and public service is fittingly commemorated by this fund. The income is available for support of research and other special purposes. In view of Colonel Mudd's life work with the nonferrous metals and his keen interest in the younger men of the profession it is purposed to apply the fund particularly to the benefit of these two. Control of income is exercised by the Board of Directors on recommendation of a Committee consisting of the President and Secretary, ex officiis, together with three others selected by the Board. The Committee consists at present of the following members: W. H. Bassett, President; H. Foster Bain, Secretary; Harvey S. Mudd serving until October, 1931; Edgar Rickard serving till October, 1932; George Otis Smith serving until October, 1933. On recommendation of this Committee the Board has authorized as a first project the preparation of a series of small books designed especially to be helpful to the Junior Members. These are now being written and it is hoped will be available for distribution in 1931. The list includes: A Brief History of American Mining, by T. A. Rickard; Mining Costs, Why and What, by Arthur Notman; Introduction to Mineral Economics, by H. Foster Bain and T. T. Read; Choice of Methods—A Record of Experience in Making Decisions, with chapters by W. H. Bassett, F. W. Bradley, E. DeGolyer, Howard N. Eavenson, A. B. Parsons, J. V. W. Reynders, L. D. A. J. Shaler—I should like to congratulate the authors on the presentation of this paper, which we have been awaiting a long time. The view they have taken of the sintering process, namely that voids are comparable to particles of a second phase capable of dissolving to a slight extent in the metal phase, is an interesting but dangerous one. Pines has given a first-order solution of the problem and Has predicted a decrease in the concentration of pores near the surface. The authors of the present paper have experimentally demonstrated the second-order effects, that is, the diffusion of the space phase between voids of different sizes, and also the movement of atoms from highly curved parts of a void to less curved regions of the same void. I have recently calculated the rate of vapor-phase transport within odd-shaped pores in copper at 850 °C and found that probably at that temperature volume flow is the more rapid shape-changing mechanism. The authors of the present paper have found that at 1000°C, vapor-phase transport is dominant. There is no disagreement here, I think. The dominant phenomenon can easily be different in different temperature ranges and with different pore shapes: I used a cylinder going to a sphere, not a tricuspid going to a "triple cuspidor." But there is some danger in the other art of the explanation, that is, in the study of the diffusion of vacancies from a pore to its neighbors and to the outside. A vacancy is very different in dimension from an atom. When it moves, it carries a field of elastic strain. This has to be taken into account. A concentration gradient of vacancies can cause them to diffuse. But in the absence of such a gradient, they can be made to diffuse by a field of stress. What happens in some of our experiments, and it is most noticeable in the shrinkage of synthetic cylindrical pores, like the tubes we have been working with, may be broken down into the following steps. (1) The presence of a surface establishes a vacancy concentration gradient, as Dr. Kuczynski and the present authors have shown. (2) Vacancies then diffuse in order to decrease this gradient. (3) In so doing, they cause an elastic field to be built up in such a direction as to oppose the diffusion, so that it slows down until it reaches a steady-state rate. (4) The steady-state flow is due to the fact that the surface tension acting on curved surfaces applies a stress to the system which itself mechanically causes vacancy diffusion. What I have said is that the diffusive types of flow of the authors and of Dr. Kuczynski are transient phenomena which soon stop if the pores are large. We are then left with a mechanical problem only, and our researches have not yet disclosed just what the mechanism of flow is; it may be a slip process, or it may take place by a vacancy diffusion of the type Nabarro has de-
