From a commercial standpoint, the only beryllium mineral warranting attention is beryl, 3Be.Al2O3.6SiO2, which is of fairly widespread occurrence. The chief deposits are in Brazil, Argentina, India, Canada and Portugal. When pure this contains about 14 per cent of beryllium oxide. The mineral richest in beryllium is phenacite, (BeO)2SiO2, or beryllium orth-osilicate, which contains 45.55 per cent beryllium oxide when pure, and if anyone is ever fortunate enough to discover a large deposit of it, it will revolutionize beryllium metallurgy. Gadoljnite, zBe0.Fe0.2Yz0~.zSi0~, is also often referred to as a beryllium mineral, though the occurrences are comparatively scant and it is of more interest as a source of yttrium than it is of beryllium. There has been a good deal of talk recently regarding some occurrences of helvite in the United States. Helvite is a complex manganese-iron beryllium silicate and, apart from difficulties that would arise in its treatment because of its compo-sition, the beryllium content of the known deposits is not high. Early Metallurgy The elemcnt beryllium was first isolated by L. N. Vauquelin in 1797.~ He crushed and heated beryl, having the idea that this heating made it more readily amenable to attack by chemicals, and then mixed the mineral with three times its weight of caustic potash and fused the mixture. The melt after cooling was dissolved in hydrochloric acid: dehydrated, and again taken up with hydrochloric acid and filtered to separate the silica. The filtrate was treated with an excess of potassium carbonate and the precipitate after draining was leached with a solution of caustic potash, which dissolved the alumina. The undissolved material was, in Vauquelin's own words, "une terre nouvelle." He dissolved the precipitate with nitric acid and evaporated it to dryness, took up with hydrochloric acid and threw the iron out with potassium hydrosulphide, though he found that to make a complete separation of the iron involved a second treatment. The solution, after throwing out of the iron, had a pronounced sweet taste, and though Vauquelin always speaks of working on "terre du beril" he suggests that the new element should be known as "glucine" (glucinum) from the Greek word for sweet, because of this outstanding property. Vauquelin did considerable work on the comparison of aluminum and beryllium, working out a separation of most of the aluminum based on its precipitation as alum. His work is reviewed at some length, since ordinarily his procedure is incorrectly stated. Iodine is a soft, lustrous, grayish-black nonmetallic element with a density of 4.9. It is the least active of the four members of the halogen family. The other members are, in order of increasing activity, bromine, chlorine, and fluorine. Iodine is a solid at ordinary temperatures, while bromine is a liquid and chlorine and fluorine are gases. Iodine melts at 113°C and volatilizes at 184.4°C to a blue-violet gas with an irritating odor. It occurs in nature only as iodates and iodides or other combined forms. It was discovered by Bernard Courtois in France in 1811, who noticed its presence as an unknown substance in crude soda ash obtained from burning seaweed. Gay-Lussac recognized it as a new element and named it iode, from the Greek word "ioeides or iodes" for violet color (MacMillan, 1970). The world production is not known with any great certainty, but it is probably between 25 and 35 million lb per year, of which about 30% is consumed in the United States. Geology and Mineralogy Iodine compounds occur as a minor constituent as a mineral in the Chilean nitrate deposits and in solution in brines and seawater. According to the US Geological Survey, it is the 47th most abundant element in the earth's crust. The minerals lautarite, Ca (I03)3 (calcium iodate), and dietzeite, Cat (103)2 (CrO4), (calcium iodate-chromate) are found in Chilean nitrate deposits which are located in Antofagasta and Tarapaca provinces on the eastern slope of the coast range in a desert area. Various brines contain iodine compounds. Seawater contains about 0.05 ppm of iodine and some seaweeds will extract and accumulate it up to 0.45% on a dry basis. Some coals in West Germany also contain iodine compounds. The known and potential sources of iodine reported in 1968 are given in Table 1. Table 2 lists estimated world iodine reserves. Iodine has been recovered from brines in Java, Indonesia, France, England, and the USSR. Iodine has also been recovered from seaweed in Ireland, Scotland, France, Japan, Norway, and the USSR. The indicated reserves and future resources of iodine are large but have never been adequately measured. Analysis Iodine as the free element can be detected by the characteristic blue color it gives to a starch solution. Quantitatively it is determined as the free element by titration with standard thiosulfate solutions using starch as an indicator. Colorimetric methods are also applicable. Markets and Prices Iodine and its compounds are generally marketed in the form of: iodine, crude; iodine, resublimed; calcium iodates; calcium iodide; potassium iodide, sodium iodide, and numerous organic compounds. Product Specifications Crude iodine, World market: 99-99.5% 12. Crude iodine, US produced, average: 99.8% 12. Crude iodine, USP XVII Specs: not less than 99.8% percent I2. Resublimed iodine is usually 99.9% and ACS specifications call for not over 0.005% total bromine and 0.020% nonvolatile materials (Anon., 1971). Prices, c.i.f. United States, for iodine have been steadily increasing from $1.18 per lb of crude in 1967 to $6.37-7.27 in January 1981 (Anon., 1981). In 1980 the price of iodine increased by 50%.

INTRODUCTION Pneumatic conveyance systems provide for material placement at high compaction rates in confined spaces. This method of conveyance provides proper roof support and ground stabilization important to underground mining activities. Today underground mining activities are conducted far differently than those of our ancestors, in that the reclamation process is the final step in any mining activity. Responsible mine owners are constantly seeking innovative methods to assist them in their reclamation procedures. During the last few years, particular attention has been paid to previously mined areas, as many of these abandoned areas lay open, imposing a constant threat to humans and animals. Considerable attention is being directed to applying proper methods for the filling and sealing of underground slopes, drifts, tunnels, and adits, because today we are experiencing the effects of past mining activities such as subsidence, acid mine water run-off, buring refuse piles, and underground mine fires. Furthermore humans and animals who have ventured into abandoned mine openings have died from exposure, suffocating gases, and mine collapse. This paper explains the method of pneumatically filling and sealing these openings and underground works by means of employing pneumatic equipment and proper backfill material together, thus achieving high material compaction and thereby providing the complete filling of the voids and alleviation of the mentioned dangers. NEUMATIC SYSTEMS The use of air to transport material is widely used; however, conveying abrasive material (e., rock, earth, and cement) requires certain pneumatic transport systems designed to handle the abrasiveness as well as the size of these materials. The Eby pneumatic transport sys tem, known as a Mobile Stower, in mounted on a 42-foot trailer pulled by a Kenwor th tractor. This arrangement allows for quick mobilization and project set-up. The pneumatic system, composed of several components assembled together, produces the volume and pressure of air required to transport the material. Knowledge of elevation, ambient temperature, and material composition at the locations to be backfilled play a big part in the design and useage of the pneumatic system. In this particular system design, material is placed by a front-end loader into an eight (8)-yard hopper which is located over a belt conveyor. The conveyor transports the material up to an air lock feeder, which is the metering devise used to feed the material into the Tee Injector located directly below. Air is supplied by a positive displacement blower which, in this instance, delivers up to 4400 CFM's of air at 8 to 12 PSI. Horse power requirements to drive the blower are met with the useage of either a diesel engine or an electric motor. A diesel engine enables the Mobile Stower to operate in remote areas. As the air flows through the upstream air piping, it passes through the Tee Injector and picks up the material and conveys it through the material conveyance pipe, (referred to as down-stream pipe), and out the placement nozzle. Depending upon material composition and the amount of tonnage to be moved, either mild carbon steel pipe or specially heat- treated hardened pipe is used for the material conveyance line. The entire pneumatic system is controlled from the operator's console. With the aid of instrumentation, only one person is required to operate the system. DURING recent years thermal drying of fine coal has increased at a tremendous rate, but very little discussion of the several excellent units has found its way into print. This is particularly true for operating and maintenance costs, and the operator who is faced with his first fine coal drying installation must depend chiefly on hearsay when trying to determine what his drying costs will be. This article presents the maintenance and operating costs for the seven drying units now installed in preparation plants of Pittsburgh Consolidation Coal Co. and lists other cost information that should be obtained before any particular drying unit is selected.

Extensive beds of rock salt occur in New York, Michigan, Kansas, and Texas. Wells are drilled through the beds, cased, and equipped with a suspended center tube. By circulating water through such a well, the soluble saline is dissolved and a brine produced. Operation of a well results ordinarily in the formation of an inverted conical cavity in the saline, inasmuch as the dissolving action of the fresh water is more rapid at the top of the bed than at the bottom. Under continued operations, the side wall of the cavity becomes so flat that a blanket of mud is deposited thereon and if the bed is overlain with shale or a soft rock caving follows. Three methods of operating wells have been employed—the "Tully plan," "the Detroit plan," and "the Trump plan." Both the Tully plan and the Detroit plan involve the formation of the aforesaid conical cavity with constant caving of shale above and deposition of mud on the side wall; the Trump plan was developed to avoid both these circumstances and thus materially prolong the life of a well. Details of the three plans follow. The Tully Plan In the Tully plan, the water passes down the annular space between the casing and the center tube, the brine rising in the center tube (Figs. I and 2). An inverted conical cavity is formed, the side wall of which relatively soon becomes so flat that it is blanketed by mud and impurities from the rock salt; this blanket limits dissolving action to the perimeter of the base of the cone, situated at the top of the saline bed. Caving of the overlying strata follows, and the total production of brine from the well is comparatively small. The Detroit Plan In the Detroit plan, the water passes down the center tube, the brine rising in the annular space between the center tube and casing (Figs. I and 2). Initially, this flow forms a pear-shaped cavity in the bottom of the salt bed, but this cavity soon changes in shape to that of an inverted cone, as under the Tully plan, with the attendant disadvantages inherent in that plan. INTRODUCED in 1946 to serve a need in power-plant operation, closed-circuit TV has been used by well over 200 organizations in approximately 25 different industries. Known as industrial television, or simply ITV, it can be described as a private system wherein the television signal is restricted in distribution, usually by confinement within coaxial cable that directly connects the TV camera to one or several monitors, Figs. 1, 2. The picture is continuous and transmission is instantaneous, permitting an observer to see an operation that may be too distant, too inaccessible, or too dangerous to be viewed directly. Destructive testing or the machining of high explosives can now be conducted hundreds of feet away by personnel who still have close control through the eyes of the TV camera. It is also possible for one man to control operations formerly requiring the co-ordinated efforts of several workers. For example, at a large midwestern cement plant conveyance of limestone from primary crusher to raw mill and loading into five storage bins once necessitated the work of two men, one having little to do but prevent spilling of material by manually moving the tripper on the belt conveyor as occasion required. TV cameras mounted on the tripper now provide bin level indication to the conveyor operator at the crusher position so he is able to control the entire loading operation remotely, Fig. 3. By means of a switch, the picture from either camera is alternately available on a single viewer, or monitor, Fig. 4. Each camera is mounted on the tripper by means of a simple adjustable support and looks down into the bin, which is identified by the number of cross members on the vertical rod. Each associated power unit is located on a platform above the camera, Fig. 5. This centralized control by means of TV often has produced superior results, and in many instances saving in operating costs has been sufficient to write off equipment costs within six months to a year. Where a key portion of a process may be enclosed or otherwise inaccessible, TV again reduces the likelihood of mistakes and permits closer control by making available to the operator valuable information he might otherwise never possess. An example of this can be found at a strip mine where the coal seam lies 50 ft or more below the overburden, which is removed by a large wheel shovel. From his centrally located position the shove1 operator was unable to judge accurately to what extent the wheel buckets engaged the earth. His chief indication of efficiency was the amount of overburden on the belt conveyor as it passed his control point 75 ft from the wheel. Now, two television cameras mounted on the tip of the boom permit the operator to view the wheel from each side and provide him with a close-up view of the buckets so that he can take immediate and continuous advantage of their capacity, quickly compensating for ground irregularities and avoiding obstructions, Fig. 6. While the word television conjures up visions of highly complex and intricate apparatus such as that employed in modern TV studios and transmitting stations, the term industrial television should indicate compact, straightforward equipment. Most present-day ITV systems contain fewer than 25 tubes including camera and picture tubes. The average home television receiver alone requires at least that many tubes. Equipment like that illustrated in Fig. 1 contains only 17 tubes, of which 3 are in the camera. It can operate continuously and dependably, without protection, in any temperature from 0" to 150°F. It consumes less current than a toaster and weighs under 140 lb. Camera and monitor may be separated by 1500 to 2000 ft and by greater distance with additional amplification. This equipment is designed to withstand vibrations up to 21/16 in. and will operate successfully under more severe conditions of vibration and heat when suitable enclosures are provided. Any number of cameras may be switched to a single monitor, and any number of monitors, within reason, used simultaneously. Two types of applications in the mining industry have already been described. A third under serious consideration by several organizations will make use of ITV for remote observation of conveyor transfer points at copper concentrating plants so that evidence of belt breakdown and plugging of transfer chutes can be spotted immediately and costly overflow of material avoided. Silicon dioxide films have been prepared on silicon wafers by the oxidation of SiH, near 400°C. Results previously reported by Goldsmith and Kern7 have been qualitatively corrobovated using a system of different geometry, and significantly greater deposition rates have been achieved. The deposition rate is independent of thickness and nearly independent of the O2/SiH, ratio over a wide range; however, the rate is strongly temperature-dependent. The structure of the deposit depends upon the cleanliness of the substrate, and the electrical field strength of the deposited oxide depends upon the nature of the electrodes. MULTILEVEL interconnects in integrated circuits using aluminum metallization require an insulator that can be deposited at low temperature. Because the A1-Si eutectic is only 577°C, the maximum deposition temperature must be below about 500°C to prevent reaction of the aluminum with the silicon and with other materials in the integrated circuit. Many methods of depositing insulating films of SiO, and other dielectrics have been reported'-6 but the technique described by Goldsmith and Kern7 offers the simplest method of preparing SiO, films. The technique involves the reaction of SiH, and 0, to form SiO, films in the 300" to 500°C temperature range. Previous work using this gas system has been reported8 and the initial development work at Philco Microelectronics was done at the East Coast R&D Laboratories. 9 This paper corroborates some of the results of Goldsmith and Kern,7 shows that much higher deposition rates can be obtained than previously reported, and presents some observations on the structure of deposited SiO, films. EXPERIMENTAL CONDITIONS Fig. 1 is a schematic drawing of the apparatus used in this study. It differs from that of Goldsmith and Kern in that 1) the gases are mixed before they enter the reaction chamber, 2) there is no fritted glass diffuser, and 3) the wafers are stationary during deposition. The control thermocouple was in a well located 0.06-in. from the substrate, and three gas supplies were used: 1 pct SiH4 in N 2, O 2, and N 2. Water vapor must be excluded from the plumbing to prevent the formation of colloidal SiO, and the SiH4 must be diluted with an inert gas because SiH4-0, mixtures are extremely flammable above about 4 pct SiH The wafer temperature was determined by attaching a thermocouple to a test wafer and the temperature was maintained to +5 C. The conditions used in this investigation are listed in Table I. The temperature range was chosen for compatibility with the A1-Si system. The volume ratio of 0, to SiH4 is the actual volume of 0, delivered to that of SiH4, taking into account the initial dilution of the SiH4. This ratio, which was used by Goldsmith and Kern,7 is a useful indicator of the experimental conditions. The active/inactive ratio is the ratio of the volume of active gases, SiH4 and O2, delivered to the volume of dilution gas. The active/inactive ratio is an important parameter to specify for deposition rate determinations since it determines the amounts of reactants that arrive at the sample per unit time. Fairly high dilution ratios were necessary to achieve uniform deposits of SiO,. Most of the process characterizations were performed on the polished (111) face of 3 to 5 ohm-cm, n-type silicon wafers which were 0.009 in. thick; but the data approximately apply to deposition of SiO, on thin films of aluminum. It is difficult to obtain accurate deposition rate data over aluminum films because of coarsening the aluminum surface during exposure to 300" to 400°C. The deposited SiO, film fol-
