AT present, no theories exist which allow prediction of the effect of alloying additions on the thermoelectric properties of metals. Nevertheless, Battelle and others1 have observed that, at high temperatures, the peak thermal electromotive-force output (relative to a platinum standard) occurs with metals in Group VI of the Periodic Chart. The authors suspected that this peak was associated with the fact that maximum electronic bond stability is achieved with these metals which have six bonding electrons per atom. On the basis of current electron-concentration theory for transition metals and alloys:' it was surmised that the addition of valency electrons to metals of Groups IV and V (accomplished by the addition of metals from Groups VI, VII, or VIII) should progressively increase the thermoelectric-power output of the resulting alloys until an alloy composition is reached at which the number of valency electrons per atom is six. A further increase in the ratio of valency electrons per atom should then decrease the thermoelectric power. Plastic deformation of the germanium adjacent to the re-growth material has been observed after alloying single crystal germanium with tin. Of several solder alloys investigated, plastic deformution was observed only in the germanium samples in contact with a tin-doped regrowth material. Dislocations were observed to move on a viewed (111) plane following thermal cycling of tin-doped regrowth material on germanium. OBSERVATION of germanium samples to which solder had been fused indicated that plastic deformation, as evidenced by slip arrays of dislocation etch pits, occurred during the fusion of the solder alloy, Figs. 1, 2. The samples had been prepared by placing the solder in contact with the germanium and heating the assembly to approximately 575"C, followed by cooling to room temperature. During this process, the solder first melts, and then as the temperature is further increased, dissolves a portion of the germanium with which it is in contact. I have been requested to sketch the iron resources of the State of Colorado, with reference both to existing, i.e., working mines, and to prospects more or less developed, but not contributing anything as yet to actual shipments. I should mention, though disliking apologies, that there is one region of the State which I believe to be important, and which has been assigned to me (with reference to its iron-deposits particularly) in the field-work of the present year for the School of Mines, which has not been systematically explored, and whose data are not in such shape as to enable me to give them in this paper. The region in question is Pitkin county and part of the adjoining country. Regarding the geological positions of the veins or deposits, they are sufficiently varied. In Boulder county there is a well-defined vein of titaniferous magnetite in ancient granite or gneiss, while in Park county there may be seen a deposit now under construction, as will later be described; when finished it will belong, let us say, to the post-quaternary. Between these, in Cambrian, Silurian, and Lower Carboniferous formations, are various deposits, and even the

The following is a brief description of the cost accounts in effect at the mines of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. The accompanying chart, Table I., shows the distribution of labor, materials, and redistributable accounts to the various operating and repair accounts. OperatiNG. Development. Owing to the fact that every mine has its peculiarities in formation and methods, the question of arriving at what charges should be included under the head of " Development" is one that has occasioned considerable thought and comment, and in the cost sheet of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. this account has been sub-divided to show the expenses of breaking ground, tramming, timbering, shaft sinking, up-raising, and cutting stations and skip chutes. It has always been the policy of the company to charge the entire cost of this work to operations monthly, whether the mines are producing or not, also the cost of the opening up of new mines; and only surface construction and additions are charged to capital, excepting original machinery installed for operating pumping plants. Explanations of the charges to the various sub-accounts follow : Breaking Ground.—Work performed in driving cross-cuts from the station, or cross-cuts from the drifts, and diamond-drill work, for the purpose of discovering or developing ore bodies. Tramming.—Cost of tramming waste produced by cross-cuts mentioned above. When waste is hoisted to another level to be used for filling, the charge to this account stops at the station, and when hoisted to surface the charge includes tramming from the collar of the shaft to the dump. Timbering.—Cost of timbering the cross-cuts mentioned above includes the cost of handling and framing such timbers, but does not include the wages of station tenders and top carmen.

THIS is the third paper in a series on the diffusion of zinc in alpha brass.1 At the time of the first-paper it was accepted that diffusion in a substitutional type of solid solution depended upon an equal interchange of solute and solvent atoms across the diffusion interface (or past a given lattice reference point). Discrepancies in the size of the areas under the diffusion curves on each side of the interface, if observed, were explained on some other basis than the fact that the solute atoms might cross the diffusion interface without an equal number of solvent atoms diffusing across the interface in the opposite direction. The second paper presented evidence indicating that zinc atoms in alpha brass diffuse across the interface more rapidly in one direction than the copper atoms diffuse across the interface in the opposite direction. This phenomenon forced the interface to move in the opposite direction of the diffusion of zinc atoms to provide space for the additional zinc atoms dissolved in the alpha brass. That the interface and columnar grain structure on one side would remain intact during this mass movement was not expected; however, it is gratifying that they did. While the evidence was sufficiently satisfying to the author, it was decided that additional experiments were in order to prove that zinc diffuses more rapidly than copper in alpha brass. It is the purpose of this paper to present the results of these experiments. PROCEDURE A bar of 70-30 wrought brass was selected, to avoid the relatively large volume change in going from beta to alpha brass as in the previous investigation. A bar 7 in. (18-cm.)* long and about ¾ in. (1.9 cm.) wide was surface ground and polished with abrasive paper on plate glass to 0.4184 ± .0002 in. (1.0625 ± 0.0005 cm.) thick. Six 0.005-in. (0.013-cm.) diameter molybdenum wires, chosen because of their very low solubility in copper and alpha brass, were stretched lengthwise along each of the two plane surfaces. Glass tubes placed at right angles to the wires every ½ in. held the wires tightly against the brass. The sample was then emersed in an acid copper sulphate plating bath and electroplated to a depth of about 0.020 in. (0.050 cm.) copper on all sides. The published phase diagrams for the copper-zirconium system1,2 indicate that the solid solubility of zirconium in copper is not accurately known. Studies made on relatively impure alloys by Pogodin, Shumova, and Kugucheva3 yielded a maximum solubility value of 1 wt pct Zr at the eutectic temperature. Allibone and sykes5 reported that an as-cast 0.2 wt pct Zr alloy is single phase at room temperature. Limited results obtained by Raub and Enge14 indicated that zirconium solubility in copper is less than 0.13 wt pct Zr at 940°C. Tn 1960, on the basis of a microstructural examination of several copper-rich Cu-Zr alloys, saarivirta6 placed the maximum solubility of zirconium in copper at 0.15 wt pct at the eutectic temperature, 980°C. The present note describes results obtained during a re-investigation of the Cu-Zr system for the purpose of accurately establishing the solidus and solvus curves and the eutectic temperature in copper-rich alloys. High-purity copper (99.99 pet) and zirconium (99.64 pet) consolidated reactor grade sponge were used to prepare several alloys, containing up to 2 wt pct Zr, by induction melting in graphite crucibles in vacuum and chill casting into a split steel mold. The melting procedure consisted of first melting the copper charge and then adding the bulk zirconium wrapped in pure copper foil. Chemical analyses were made of both the cold-rolled alloy ingots after homogenization at 925°C for 450 hr in evacuated quartz capsules and of small specimens which had been used in the phase diagram studies. 'The carbon content of each alloy was also determined and was found to be less than 0.001 wt pct in every case. Metallographic and electrical resistivity measurements were used as the primary methods for this investigation, although some thermal analysis studies were also performed. Heat treatments of all the alloys were carried out with the specimens wrapped in molybdenum or alloy foil (of the same composition as the specimen) and sealed in quartz tubes either in vacuum or under a purified helium atmosphere. Following high-temperature anneals for long periods of time, slight depletion of zirconium from the specimen surface was observed. Therefore, careful preparation of samples for microscopic examination and chemical analysis of the samples themselves was necessary to check the composition of samples used in determining phase boundaries. Points on the solvus curve were determined on quenched specimens by both isothermal reaction after solution heat treatment at 950°C for 8 hr and by isothermal annealing of alloy specimens at successively higher temperatures for times ranging from 24 to 500 hr. THE Bureau of Mines has been charged by Congress to investigate processes for the production of alumina from low-grade bauxite, alunite, and clay. As one part of the program, an investigation of the application of ore-dressing methods to improve the grade of high-silica bauxite is in progress at the Mississippi Valley Experiment Station at Rolla, Mo. This paper summarizes data obtained so far and presents detailed results of tests on four typical samples. MINERALOGY OF BAUXITE The name bauxite originally was used to designate the dihydrous aluminum oxide (A1203.2H20). The designation has been retained, although the existence of a specific mineral of such composition has been disproved. The term is now applied to ores of aluminum consisting of various mixtures of the minerals gibbsite (A1203.3H20), diaspore (A1203.H20), and boehmite (A1203.H20). The predominant hydrous aluminum oxide in most American bauxite, however, is gibbsite. In some instances bauxite may be amorphous mixtures of the hydrous aluminum oxides that approximate the composition of dihydrous aluminum oxide (A1203.2H20). The proposed name for this material is cliachite. Gibbsite and boehmite, the trihydrate and monohydrate, are soluble in a solution of sodium hydroxide at elevated temperature and pressure, whereas diaspore is practically insoluble. The solubility of these two minerals is the basis of the Bayer process of alumina extraction. All bauxites contain certain impurities, the commonest of which, in the order of their importance, are: silica, principally as a constituent of kaolinite, and to a lesser extent as quartz; iron, as hematite, limonite, and siderite; and titanium, as ilmenite, rutile and leucoxene. Minor impurities are zircon, cobalt and nickel. Bauxite is produced commercially in Arkansas, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia and Tennessee, but the most important deposits in the United States are in Arkansas, in the vicinity of Little Rock. There is no field of human thought or endeavor which does not owe much to the past. Yet, surrounded by the prodigious scientific and technological achievements of our day, it is all too easy to forget the extent to which we have stood on the shoulders of giants. The coking industry of the United States is now a little more than one hundred years old. As with the American nation itself, the earliest beginnings of the industry owe a great deal to British influences, and its development owes much to those influences of continental Europe. No serious contribution to the history of coking in the United States can be written, therefore, which does not mention the work of the pioneers of the Old World. It is believed that the use of metallurgical coke dates back to antiquity. The fact that certain coals would soften under the influence of heat to yield a porous solid was known to the ancients of China and India, where a very crude coking operation was carried out by simply setting fire to piles of coal. After active combustion had started, turf or wet straw was used to seal off the pile. The coke obtained was used to forge iron and steel implements and weapons. Perhaps the earliest reference to the coking phenomenon is to be found in the writings of Theophrastus, pupil of Aristotle. In his History of Stones, which was written in or about the year 371 B.C., there appears the following observation. "But the Lipara stone empties itself, as it were, in burning and becomes like the pumice, changing at once both its colour and density; for before burning it is black, smooth and compact.... Certain stones there are about Tetras, in Sicily, which is over against Lipara, which empty themselves in the same manner in the fire." The first comparatively modern reference to coke is to be found in a recommendation for carbonization made in 1584 by Julius, Duke of Braunschweig-Luneberg, owner of the Hohenbuchen mine in the Harz district of Germany. In 1587, Sir Francis Willoughby of. Wollaton, England wrote: "There are twenty rooks broughte into charcoal and laid up in store." A rook of coal was equivalent to some 25 tons, and the coking would probably have been carried out in a manner similar, to that used for the production of charcoal. In 1589, Thomas Proctor attempted to carbonize coal, and in the year 1590 an English patent was granted to John Thornborough, Dean of York, in order that he might "purify pit coal and free it of its offensive smell". IN Bessemer-steel practice, air is blow, through a bath of iron, or projected strongly upon its surface to burn out silicon, manganese, and carbon. Toward the end of the blow, when the iron is not protected. from oxidation by these elements and the excess of air becomes great, there is oxidation of the iron. In open-hearth practice, the same difficulty is experienced with dissolved gas and oxides in the product, though not to as great or severe a degree as in the Bessemer process because the oxidizing conditions grow less severe as the end of the heat is approached, and if the bath is allowed to boil for a time it undoubtedly frees itself from a large part of the gas and oxides which have been absorbed in the earlier part of the process. Basic open-hearth steel is usually assumed to contain a larger proportion of oxides than acid open-hearth steel, but it may be said that all steel, Bessemer and open-hearth, contains more or less oxide of iron dissolved in the fluid metal at the end of the "blow" or "heat." That certain metals are solvents for their respective oxides has been shown, in the case of copper, by Heyn, and, in the case of iron, by Law. It is indicated that the solubility of iron oxide in iron increases with the purity and temperature of the metal. This confirms what is observed and known by operating men, and these observations may be summarized as follows: 1. Cast irons is rarely subject to oxidation, as is logical from its composition. 2. Normal steel, unless deoxidizers are added, contains blow holes. 3. Steel known to be oxidized is full of blow holes. 4. The addition of deoxidizers prevents, to a greater or less degree, the formation of blow holes in normal steel. Kearns (R., Pa.) introduced a bill in Congress along lines suggested by the National Society of Professional Engineers, to amend the Taft-Hartley Act to permit scientific, technical, and professional groups to discuss wages, hours, and working conditions with management-with the protection and support of the federal law. The article reports that the bill is opposed by a loosely knit group of professional and technical unions, the Engineers & Scientists of America. This group wants Taft-Hartley amended to make it an unfair labor practice for employers to discuss collective bargaining matters with professional organizations.

A decision was made by the management of International Salt Co. in 1960 to eliminate all waste products which were entering the waters of Lake Seneca. This was to be accomplished by the injection of waste slurries into an abandoned brine cavity. The effluent from the cavity was to be treated and used for the manufacture of salt or disposed by deep well injection into the Cherry Valley limestone. After several years of research and design, a construction permit was granted by the state of New York; the injection, recovery, and disposal wells were constructed and after a public hearing an operational permit was issued. A summary of the operational results of the system is given.
