Tests carried out with both kaolin and silica slurries show that flocculants of the polyacrylamide type can be used to improve the thickening performance of hydrocyclones. This thickening improvement demonstrates that contrary to previously held theories, flocs can be formed which are capable of resisting the shear forces in a hydrocyclone. For the 1.25-in.-diam cyclone used, optimum thickening occurs when the flocculant solution is injected into the slurry stream at or near the feed inlet. Hydrocyclones offer many distinct advantages over gravity thickeners. These advantages include simplicity, low initial and operating costs, small space requirements, and flexibility of operation. In spite of these advantages hydrocyclones have not been widely used as thickeners. The main reason for their lack of application is that hydrocyclones are unable to efficiently remove semicolloidal particles (less than 5 microns) from the suspending solution. In gravity thickeners, the fine particles can be induced to form particle aggregates, or flocs, which have the settling characteristics of large particles. In the hydrocyclone, however, it was always assumed that the existence of shear would prevent the formation of flocs.1-3 Thus, if no floc structure is retained, the thickening hydrocyclone must be designed so that its separation size is below the size of the smallest particle to be recovered. To obtain a very small separation size requires the formation of very high centrifugal forces, which necessitates the use of small-diameter cyclones. Small hydrocyclones have, in turn, very low throughput capacities which render them impractical for many industrial thickening applications. Thus, if the effects of flocculation cannot be utilized, the usefulness of hydrocyclones as thickeners remains limited to pulps which contain no very fine particles. It is well established that most substances acquire a surface electric charge when brought into contact with an aqueous medium. The repulsive interactions between similarly charged particles act to prevent flocculation. One method of flocculating a dispersion is to neutralize the repulsive surface charges by the addition of an electrolyte. The reduction of the electrostatic surface charge (Zeta potential) then permits the universal van der Waals attractive forces to operate between the atoms of the various particles and form particle aggregates. The lime additions used by thickener operators promotes flocculation by this mechanism. A second method of flocculating a dispersion is by the addition of long-chain macromolecules. In this case flocculation is brought about by a bridging mechanism in which the molecules are adsorbed with part of their length on two or more particles, thus forming a molecular bridge between the particles.4,5 The molecules also form bridges between themselves when a single particle is bonded to several polymer molecules. The type of bonding between the flocculant molecule and the particle may be hydrogen bonding, chemical bonding, or electrolytic attraction.6 The flour and glue which are used as thickener additives are believed to promote flocculation in this manner. In the past decade synthetic long-chain polymers with extremely high flocculating capabilities have been developed. The flocs formed by these new polymeric flocculants are larger and more shear-resistant than those formed by the presence of electrolytes.7 The advent of these flocculants raises the question: Are the flocs formed by these synthetic polymers stable enough to resist the liquid shearing forces in a hydrocyclone? The investigations reported in this paper were carried out in order to provide some answers to this question. EXPERIMENTAL WORK For the bulk of the test work a 5% slurry of commercially available kaolin with an average particle size of 5 microns was used. An initial evaluation of the available flocculants was carried out to determine which flocculant formed the most shear-resistant flocs. A combination of the techniques used by Healy7 and Booth8 was used for this purpose. This initial study revealed that the neutral high-molecular weight polyacrylamides produced the most shear-resistant flocs. One of these flocculants, Separan MGL*, was selected and then used for all the hydrocyclone tests. The flocculant was dissolved in water and added to the hydrocyclone as a dilute solution.

VENTILATION of underground workings to fur-nish air of good quality to workers is now the accepted practice for all kinds of mining; but in coal mining it is also a requirement vital for safety to have systematic coursing of the air to all parts of a mine so that fire damp can be diluted and carried away. These two basic needs are recognized in the codes of every country or State where coal is mined, and each has its own system of ventilation requirements. With the same fundamental requirements, varying in degree but not in kind, the surprising thing is that these and other features of regulatory codes should vary so-wide-ly that their provisions on the same subject bear hardly any resemblance to one another. This was strikingly brought out in the paper given before this institute in 1926, on "State Coal-Mining Laws Concerning Ventila-tion1. The explanation ordinarily is that the geologic forma-tions and the mining conditions and methods differ in the various coal fields. Although that is true, in most countries and States the variations in the differ-ent mining districts within each country or state vary widely, and the respective codes must be made to apply by special provisions to meet the variations in thickness of coal, depth,. dip, character of roof, and presence or absence of gas. Evidently the great diversity in codes is due to the method of formulating them. Some are prepared by political commissions in which partisan interests are a factor; others originated in the early days of mining with meager outlines and were so amended by legisla-tive acts or administrative orders from year to year as to become complicated and ambiguous, and pro-visions in different parts of a single law are often contradictory. Such laws have therefore been difficult to interpret and to enforce adequately.

Twenty years ago, the standard voltage for stripping machines was 4160 v and few people even thought of using a higher voltage. It was adequate for the machines of the day, which seldom exceeded 2500 hp, and higher voltages were considered to be too expensive and even dangerous. Then, in 1956, a 4500-hp machine was placed in operation and it was determined, with some reluctance, that it should operate on 7200 v. The next step, to 14,400 v, was taken in 1964 and the latest, but perhaps not final, step was made in 1967, when voltage was increased to 25,000 v. Today, 4160 v is considered almost obsolete and 7200 v is generally considered standard. However, a few mines are using 14,400 v and some eight machines soon will be operating on 25 KV, indicating that the technical and safety problems have been solved and that there must be some merit to the higher voltages. Thus, it is logical to question, "How do I determine the best voltage for my operation?"

From the time of its beginning in the mid-19th century, the American barite industry has had its major development in the eastern and central states. Geologic and economic factors serve to maintain Arkansas, Missouri, and the Southern Appalachian states in the lead position. In earlier days, the major markets for barite were in paint, chemical, and glass manufacturing, and the favored deposits were those which were close to eastern industrial areas; furthermore, the eastern deposits were cheaply mined and required little or no beneficiation. In the last few decades, the use of barite as a weighting medium for muds in rotary oil well drilling has caused a great expansion in the industry, but the marketing picture is still centered outside of the western states-now on the Gulf Coast area where high pressures are common in oil wells. Low cost imported barite, readily available on the East Coast and Gulf Coast, has always been a major marketing factor in the industry. The major barite producing state is Arkansas, with the industry centering about the Magnet Cove area. Missouri ranks second, with production mainly from residual deposits. Several Southestern states are actively producing from residual deposits.

Forty-five years have passed since I discovered the extensive and remarkable diatom-earth beds at Monterey, California., and now I have the satisfaction of bringing to notice still another wonderful deposit in the heart of Arizona. The Monterey beds mere described at the Philadelphia Academy,* and specimens were sent to Prof. J. W. Bailey, West Point, N. Y., at that time the leading American authority upon such microscopic relics of organic life. The earth from both localities is snow-white and pulverulent. It rubs off' like soft chalk upon the fingers when handled, and has the general appearance of chalk. But, unlike the Monterey beds, these newly-discovered deposits consist largely of volcanic ash, through which the siliceous shells of the diatoms are distributed. These deposits are in the central portion of the San Pedro valley,† in the southeastern corner of Pinal county. The region of their greatest development is a few miles south of the mining town of Mammoth, on the east bank of the stream, and near Redington, some 40 m. N. of Benson, on the Southern Pacific railway. The altitude is about 2600 ft. above tide. This portion of the San Pedro valley lies between the high Catalina and Rincon ranges on the west and the Galiuro mts. on the east. Geological Relations. In his second report upon the Geology of Alabama, Prof. M. Tuomey calls attention to a rock occurring near Florence, in the Tennessee valley, the composition of which is as follows: Per cent. Carbonate of lime,.. .. .. ..16.41 Phosphate of lime,.. .. .. ..14.19 Peroxide of iron,.. .. .. .. .36 Quartz and other insoluble matters,. .. ..68.72 99.68 This rock was referred by Prof. Tuomey to the Carboniferous, because he found the Carboniferous limestones always resting conformably upon it, whilst both rest uncomformably upon the underlying Silurian or Devonian rocks. The recent discovery in Tennessee of phosphate-rock of this age (or approximately so) has stimulated the search in Alabama for similar rich material; but our search has been, up to this time, unrewarded by the finding in quantity of anything of better quality than the rock whose analysis is given above. It is, however, in high degree probable .that the rich phosphaterock of Tennessee will at some time be found to have its counterpart in Alabama. Materials of several kinds, containing a notable quantity of phosphoric acid, have been found in Alabama in both the Cretaceous and the Tertiary formations, and for our present purpose they may be most conveniently considered in their geological relations.

This study was undertaken on account of the lack of definite knowledge concerning the influence of bismuth on wire-bar copper, and the small elimination of bismuth from copper-matte during the smelting-operations. The early workers who studied the influence of bismuth on copper confined their investigations to malleability and ductility—two physical properties which are related to the others so intimately that their determination is of primary importance. Karsten and Levo1,² using bending- and mealleability-tests, seem to have been the first to take up the subject, and while their results are incomplete, they agree in the main with the later work of Hampe.3 The bending-tests used by the first investigators consisted in bending the specimen until it failed. The malleability-tests were made by beating the material to a knife-edge with a hammer. Hampe not only determined the percentage of bismuth which would cause red-shortness and cold-shortness of the alloy, together with other influences of bismuth on the malleability and ductility of copper, but also took up the influence of the bismuth protoxide, BiO, on copper, and of bismuth sesquioxide, Bi,O,, on the copper protoxide, CuO. Hampe's conclusioris of the influences of these two latter compounds of bismuth on copper are as follows : "If the protoxide of bismnth be alloyed with metallic copper, it is not changed to metallic bismuth, but remains mechanically distributed throughout the copper.

RAPID colorimetric estimation of the amount of transparent minerals has been applied success- fully to instream mill products at the cryolite flotation plant of the Pennsylvania Salt Mfg. Co., Natrona, Pa. Apparatus used was a Bausch & Lomb monochromatic colorimeter. The optical assembly of the colorimeter, shown in Fig. 1, passes light from a 6-v, 32-cp, prefocus incandescent lamp through two condensing lenses, a heat-absorbing filter, an aperture-control diaphragm, an interference filter, and a sample container. The light finally strikes a barrier-layer photocell and the output current of the photocell is measured by a galvanometer. The engraved index line of the collective lens, located between the lamp and the galvanometer, is imaged upon the transmission scale of the colorimeter by the galvanometer mirror. Reflected light from the galvanometer mirror, the position of which is determined by the output current of the photocell, enables reading of percent transmission throughout the mineral sample being tested. IN the exploration of a copper deposit by drilling, obvious advantages are to be gained from a distinction between primary and secondary ore.1 Perhaps the chief of these is the aid which such a distinction renders in determining where a given hole should stop. The copper assay, often a sufficient guide, cannot always be exclusively relied upon. Primary ores may extend downward indefinitely and may fluctuate in value independently of depth: if primary ores are consistently lean for a considerable vertical distance, there is little reason to expect that, still deeper, they will increase to the commercial grade; on the other hand, rich primary ores may persist uninterruptedly downward or may come in again below a lean interval. Secondary ores, however, have a comparatively limited vertical extent; in a large way enrichment decreases with depth and finally gives out. It follows then, that when a hole descends from profitable ore into ore of less than the commercial minimum, the practical significance of the situation depends upon whether this decrease results from a decrease in secondary enrichment or is a variation in primary content: if the copper of the ore passed through has been chiefly secondary, little is gained in the average case by extending the hole much below the point at which the commercial limit is reached; but, when copper is chiefly primary, due weight must be given to the possibility that, still deeper, the ore may again improve.

The careful work of Gross and Zimmerleyl has established the fact that the energy actually used in grinding is proportional to the new surface produced. This confirmation of Rittinger's law was made by crushing quartz in a frictionless drop-weight machine and determining the surface of the quartz by its rate of solution in hydrofluoric acid. The details of this procedure have been described adequately elsewhere and need not be repeated here. The resultant data furnish the only available basis for comparing accurately the efficiency of grinding machines. This method is so cumbersome experimentally that it has been little used. As an alternative all sorts of approximations have been proposed. The best of these is complete size analysis by sieving and elutria-tion. Such procedure is very lengthy and difficult to carry out accurately. Furthermore, any sizing method becomes very inaccurate for determining surface with very fine sizes where the ratio of surface to volume becomes very large. To avoid the lengthy and difficult technique of elutriation it has been proposed to estimate the size distribution below 200 mesh from various probability formulas. Such a procedure is at best an engineering approximation; at worst it is a mere guess. Some time ago Dr. V. H. Gottschalk2 found that the coercive forces of magnetite powders were directly proportional to the surface area, regardless of size distribution. It was at once apparent that this furnished a method for determining grinding efficiency quickly and accurately. The only requirement was a single determination of the relation between the work input of the Gross-Zimmerley drop-weight machine and the coercive force of the resultant crushed magnetite. INTRODUCTION THIS investigation of bismuth-selenium alloys was made in an attempt to find a suitable material for use in thermoelectric generators. These devices are simply thermocouple circuits designed for the efficient production of electrical energy from thermal energy, which may in turn be derived directly from solar radiation or from the combustion of fuels. The requirements of a material for use in a thermoelectric generator are obviously quite different from those of a material used in a temperature-measuring thermocouple. Naturally, for power generating purposes, the thermoelectric power (voltage produced per degree difference in temperature between the junctions) must be as high as possible. Furthermore, in order to obtain reasonably high power outputs, the materials used in the generator must have an electrical conductivity which is as high as possible. Finally, in order to minimize heat lost by conduction to the cold junction, the thermal conductivity must be as low as possible. The relation between these several factors and the efficiency of conversion of thermal into electrical energy-the thermoelectric efficiency-has been discussed by Telkes1 in a recent review of the subject. She gives the thermoelectric efficiency as: [ ] For many materials, some of the desired properties (for example, high electrical and low thermal conductivity) are almost mutually exclusive; the problem thus becomes one of finding a material which has the optimum combination of properties. BISMUTH-SELENIUM ALLOYS Work on the equilibrium diagram of the bismuth-selenium alloys has been reviewed by Hanson,2 who gives the diagram reproduced in Fig I. There are two intermediate phases in this system, BiSe and Bi2Se3. The existence of an alpha and beta modification of BiSe has not been demonstrated satisfactorily and the writer found no evidence of it in the present work. The Appalachian system contains the largest area of all known Carboniferous coal-fields. Beginning near the north line dividing Pennsylvania and New York, it extends southwest through West Virginia, southeastern Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee and terminates in Alabama—a distance of about 950 miles. The northeastern part of this field will be considered in this paper. The general dips of the measures are toward a trough about parallel to the Ohio river, from the Allegheny mountains and ridges on the west. The Potonlac field is an exception; the dip in this case being northeast, the folding to the east of the Allegheny mountains in Pennsylvania being of a greater degree and diminishing southwestward. The cause of the general dip to the west of the mountains seems to be the westward movement of the thrust east of the mountains, with the large Nittany fold including other folds to the east of the escarpment, raising the mountains high above the coal-fields to the west, making a general slope toward the Ohio river southwest, and crossing waves of anticlinals west ward. The synclinals contain the coals, while in many cases on the top of the folds or anticlinals some of the veins (or, in some cases, all) are eroded. The Coal-Measures of this field are generally divided into three principal divisions, known as the Upper, the Barren, and the Lower Coal-Measures, but there is a tendency to divide them into five groups, which is more convenient. Beginning at the bottom, the first would be the Conglomerate ; second, the Lower Coal-Measures; third, the Barren; fourth, the Upper Coal-Measures, and fifth, the Upper Barren or Permian Measures.

THE work described in this paper was carried out under the sponsorship of the Foreign Economics Administration and in cooperation with the Departamento Nacionál da Produção Mineral, Rio de Janeiro. The project was undertaken to obtain complete data on the variations in washability of coal to be used for coke manufacture in the steel industry and to determine the economy of preliminary hand-sorting operations. The coal-producing industry of Brazil is in that pioneering stage in which operat¬ing practices and methods are just being developed. Increased wartime demand for fuel, coincident with a drastic curtailment of foreign supplies due to lack of shipping facilities, has put a tremendous pressure on the national industry to furnish more coal. Under this incentive, production facilities are being expanded and new methods of operation are being tested. Such changes are being developed both by improvement of existing methods that originated in the field and by adaptation and modification of methods introduced from the United States and Europe. These mining condi¬tions and mining practices in Brazil are typical of what the American mining engineer will find in many instances when he goes pioneering into the developing coal fields of the Southern Hemisphere. The producing coal fields of Brazil are all in the southern states of that country. The coal measures are in a band roughly paralleling the coast and extending in a generally southwesterly direction from northern São Paulo through the states of Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul to near the Uruguayan border in the vicinity of Bajé. The accompanying map1 (Fig. I shows the general location of these fields and also the principal routes of movement of both national and imported coal in a late pre-war year (1940). 12.3-1. Reporting. NEED. It seems almost unnecessary to comment on the need for reporting research and development results and activities, and yet much of the difficulty and misunderstanding surrounding a Research and Development (R&D) group results from poor or nonexistent reporting. Certainly no evaluation can be made without reports of results or plans. It is as important to report accurately and fully for the department's own use as it is for external use. Research unreported might as well be considered research undone. This section will discuss, in part, the need for reporting, the general types of reports which may be generated to satisfy the need, and finally, the evaluation of a project as judged by various commonly used standards. PURPOSE. Some specific observations might be appropriate concerning the reporting of R&D results. The requirements and background of the group receiving the report must be considered. A particular report is usually directed towards the background of a particular group, such as ((technical," "operational," "financial," or "marketing." It is essential that the emphasis and coverage be geared to the training of people receiving the report. It should be obvious that the financial department will be less interested in the technical details of the process and more interested in the capital funds and tax implications involved in the project. Operating personnel will be greatly interested in the effects of a new method on mining plans, and so on. This does not mean that the reporting in any way should slight pertinent details, nor should a patronizing attitude be assumed by the writer. However, it is essential that the needs of the reader be recognized. For reports that might have large and varied distribution, it is often feasible to group, either as sections or appendixes, the special details and information of interest only to certain functions within the organization. IN 1882, Peckham put forward a provisional hypothesis to account .or the distillation of petroleum.1 He did not formally state the hypothesis, but in a discussion of facts drawn from many fields he made it clear that he regarded petroleum, and especially the petroleum of the Pennsylvania fields, as a "fractional distillate produced under high pressure and consequently at a comparatively high temperature.?2 He quotes James Hall on the geology of the Appalachians and says:3 It is not necessary here to discuss the nature or origin of metamorphic action. It is sufficient for our purpose to know that from the upper Silurian to the close of the Carboniferous periods the currents of the primeval ocean were transporting sediments, sorting them into gravel, sand, and clay, forming gravel bars and great sand beds beneath the riffles and clay banks in still water, burying vast accumulations of sea weeds and sea animals far beneath the surface. The alteration, due to the combined action of heat, steam, and pressure, of the formations of the Appalachian system from Point Gaspe in Canada to Lookout mountain in Tennessee, involving the Carboniferous and earlier strata, distorting and folding them, and converting the coal into anthracite and the clays into schists along their eastern border, could not have ceased to act westward along an arbitrary line, but must have gradually died out farther and farther from the surface (source?). The great beds of shale and limestone containing fucoids, animal remains, and even indigenous petroleum must have been invaded by this heat action to a greater or less degree, and that "chronic evaporation" of Prof. Lesley must have been the inevitable consequence. From an investigation of the relations between coal and petroleum, White has" more recently concluded as follows: (1) Petroleum is a product generated in the course of the geodynamic alteration of deposits of organic debris of certain types buried in the sedimentary strata. (2) The quantity and characters of the oils generated are determined by: (a) the composition of the organic deposit at the beginning of its dynamo-chemical alteration; (b) by the stage in the progress of the dynamo-chemical alteration of the organic substances; (c) by the elimination, under certain conditions, of the heavier and more' viscous hydrocarbons through filtration incident to migration.

Several methods of analyzing pressure build-up data in wells have been presented by various authors. This paper reviews the theory and method of D. R. Horner and presents example calculations performed on data obtained by testing several different types of wells. These calculations include, (1) graphical estimation of final static pressure, (2) determination of the productive capacity of the pay away from the well bore and. (3) the degree to which the formation adjacent to the well bore has been damaged by completion or other causes. The methods of testing and precautions which should be taken to assure the best data possible are discussed. Limitations and reliability of calculated results are also treated. INTRODUCTION Pressure testing of wells is generally limited to the determination of producing and static mean formation pressures. The so-called "static" pressure determination.. along with PVT, electric log and production data, enable the reservoir engineer to determine, within reasonable limits, the drive mechanism of the reservoir and in some cases. the amount of edge water encroachment. Producing pressure tests enable calculation of productivity indices and allow the engineer to plan the systematic production of a pool for optimum conservation of suhsurface energy. The radial flow formula advanced by Muskat' has been based on the assumption of incompressible radial fluid flow. It has been known that reservoir fluids do not behave in an ideally incompressible manner. For example, incompressible flow theory indicates a simple logarithmic relationship between the difference of the instantaneous and static well pressures when plotted against time. 'The latter stages of this type of plot of pressure build-up data generally show a marked devia-, tion from the earlier straight line trend. which deviation may be shown to be due to the compressible flow of fluids toward the well bore. Shut-in times of 24, 48. 72. or at most 96 hours are currently in wide use for determining so-called "static" reservoir pressure. Due to the continuation of compressible flow of fluids into the well bore long after this arbitrarily taken shut-in time, the determination of static pressures has almost invariably resulted in lower than equilibrium values. Materials balance calculations made early in the life of a reservoir often result in a calculated reserve which later observations prove to be too low. Failure to obtain reliable "static" reservoir pressures within the prescribed 24 or 48-hour build-up period has undoubtedly been a major factor in obtaining these low estimates. Comparison of theoretical and actual productivity performance has indicated that formation damage and not being able to attain true static pressures have been partially responsible for the observed discrepancies. Research into the theory of compressible flow behavior has resulted in methods of applying these theories to the testing of wells. Application of the developed theories to pressure build-up performance indicates that in many cases the following can be estimated. 1. The static reservoir pressure. 2. The in-place effective formation permeability away from the well bore. 3. The degree or extent by which the formation has been damaged adjacent to the well bore, either through completion methods or subsequent damage due to fluid entry. REVIEW OF THEORY Horner2 has shown that the pressure build-up within a "point source" well is approximated by the following formula: Equation (1) is the approximate "point source" solution to the radial compressible flow equation advanced by Muskat. The solution assumes the following: 1. A point source well is producing at constant rate from the center of an infinite reservoir with a constant pressure at its external boundary. 2. The fluid flowing is present in one phase only. 3. The compressibility and absolute viscosity of the fluid remain essentially constant over the range of temperature and pressure variation encountered. 4. The well i.; shut-in at the sand face arid there is 110 after production into the well bore. 5. The formation permeability is homogeneous in the direction of flow. From Equation (1) it can be seen that if an ideal well were shut-in while producing from a reservoir under the conditions assumed, the pressure build-up would be a logarithmic func-

For the purpose of developing combinations of higher strength and conductivity than are obtainable by heat treatment alone in the age-hardening copper alloys, an investigation has been made of the effects of combinations of heat treatment and strain hardening on the properties in question. The investigation was limited to a study of the alloys containing nickel and silicon; nickel, silicon and cadmium; and cobalt and silicon. The experiments made in the course of the study are described in this paper in three groups: 1. The effect of hard drawing subsequent to heat treatment on the mechanical and electrical properties of the alloys. 2. The effect of low-temperature aging on the properties of heat-treated and hard-drawn alloys. 3. The effect of strain on the rate of aging of quenched nickel-silicon-copper alloys.

During the past 15 years, rock mass structural properties have become acknowledged as the focal point for rock slope design. Re- search into the methods for measuring and incorporating structure into the design effort has taken many directions and has produced a variety of useful techniques. Among the findings at Kennecott has been the realization that structure-controlled instability can be categorized as regressive or progressive depending on the relative geometries of slope and structure and on the strength characteristics of the structures. It was further identified that a failure condition can initiate as regressive and in time become progressive should external stimuli increase or structure characteristics be altered due to extensive displacements. The transition point has been shown to be a useful indicator of the expectable collapse time. This paper defines three fundamental failure types as dictated by structure and offers discussion on the practical value of such a classification to slope design and failure control. Several prominent examples of failures typifying the categories of structure- controlled instability are discussed. An application of f allure prediction based on the regressive-to-progressive transition point is described.
