Mercury is the latest ecological disaster. It was believed to be no pollution problem because it is heavier than water and expected to fall to the bottom of streams. But the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found that mercury in a dozen states and several Canadian provinces was being ingested by fish. A Deadly Dose First to sound the alarm was Canada when a graduate student's research revealed that mercury contamination in Lake St. Clair had reached 1.4 pmm. which is almost three times the 0.5 ppm the FDA's allowable maximum.

INITIAL development of the south orebody at San Manuel is being carried out from the No. 1 and No. 2 shafts. The haulage and grizzly levels are being driven to develop the upper one third of the massive hydrothermally altered and fractured monzonite orebody. This first haulage level has been placed at the 1475-ft level with a grizzly level 60 ft above. The grizzly level will be connected to all service shafts so that men and supplies can come down to the grizzly level and go to working places without congesting the haulage level. These connections are also a vital part of the ventilation plan. The haulage level is being advanced along the north and south fringes of the orebody and connections are being driven to the three shafts now under construction. The No. 1 and No. 2 shafts will serve the development work with supplies, skip hoisting, and ventilation at each shaft and the two shafts are connected on both the grizzly and haulage level.

EMPEROR GOLD MINES Vatukoula, Fiji 1974 Operating Data to July 1 ORE DESCRIPTION: Ore bodies occur in basalt and associated ash beds overlain by andesite tuffs and sediments. The basalt in much of the ore mined is weathered with alteration of olivine to serpentine and iron oxides, and augite to chorite. The most important host minerals for gold are the tellurides sylvanite and hessite. Next in importance the sulphide s, pyrite, marcasite and arseno-pyrite. A small amount of free gold also occurs. Chalcopyrite, sphalerite, tetrahedrite, bornite, galena and native tellurium are present in small quantities. TYPE OF MINE: Underground and open pit ORE HAULAGE TO MILL: 3.5 ton bottom dump skips from underground. 7 ton trucks from open pit. CAPACITY IN TONS/24 HRS: 1345 short tons ASSAY HEADS (1973): 0.232 oz Au per ton, 0.357 oz Te per ton PRODUCTS: Gold Bullion (400 oz bars) Metallic Tellurium (1 2 lb bars ) RECOVERIES: AU 86.2% Te 88.0% ORE GRINDABILITY: 9.25 Kwh/T TOTAL POWER: 25.7 Kwh/T WATER: Pumped 112 mile to a 318, 000 gallon head tank. Consumption: 2 140 gal per ton, no reclaimed water used. TAILINGS: Pumped 2 /3 mile through 8" pipe. Uphill sections are steel. Downhill sections are fibro asbestos.

Literature on the electrolysis of aluminum from cryolite melts and on the structure of these melts is surveyed critically. Data on density, freezing point, and other properties are reviewed. Theories of the electrolysis are examined in the light of these data. Two theories are presented which account equally well for the observations. * * * * In the early days, the process was thought of as a simple one. The actual mechanisms must be tremendously more complex. This paper is devoted to a rather narrow part of the whole subject, namely, what ions are present in the bath, and by what mechanism the current is carried.
