EXPERIMENTAL work on liquefaction of coal was taken up by the Bureau of Mines in 1936 when it became evident that a prudent policy from the national point of view should include preparation for the time when gradual exhaustion of petroleum resources would require supplementing the growing demand for motor fuel with gasoline and diesel oil from coal. At that time (1936) certain foreign nations that had no home sources of petroleum, especially Germany, England, and Japan, were conducting active research and at least two of them were producing liquid fuel from coal on a commercial scale. Germany was reported to have an annual producing capacity of 800,000 metric tons of gasoline per year, and England had just put into operation the Billingham plant of Imperial Chemical Industries for the hydrogenation of bituminous coal and tar by the Bergius-.I.G. process. The annual capacity of this plant was about 150,000 long tons of gasoline per annum (3500 bbl. per day). With these developments taking place in foreign countries, it seemed important to undertake a long-range program of fundamental research in this country to establish a sound groundwork for the evaluation of foreign work on synthetic liquid fuels and at the same time to obtain data on the oil yields and operating difficulties using various kinds of American coals and lignite to the hydrogenation process. The results of such research would be useful in determining the yields and quality of liquid products obtainable from various coals so that American industry would be in position to select the most suitable coals and make rapid progress in establishing this new industry when the commercial need should arise. It was hoped, also, that progress in a better understanding of the chemistry of coal hydrogenation would reduce the cost of the process materially. To carry out this program, a small continuous unit capable of hydrogenating 100 lb. of coal in 24 hr. was installed at the Central Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines at Pittsburgh, Pa. Small steel autoclaves or bombs of 0.3 gal. (1.2 liters) capacity also were used for batch-hydrogenation experiments in the study of the chemical fundamentals of the process. Much valuable assistance was obtained in planning the experimental program and designing the equipment from the Fuel Research Station of Great Britain and the Fuel Laboratories of the Mines Department of Canada, where such investigations had been in progress for several years. Seven formulas commonly used to evaluate industrial screening efficiency are investigated to determine if they are suitable for calculating the efficiency of rectangular-hole screens. Six formulas were found to be limited in application to square-hole screens. The seventh, although acceptable for evaluating rectangular-hole as well as square-hole screening efficiency, was found to be unwieldy. A new formula is developed based on the concept of misplaced sizes. This proposed formula permits the single step determination of efficiency and is applicable to all types of screening applications.

The installation of the Gayley dry-air process appealed specially to the management of the Warwick Iron & Steel Go., for the reason that for fifteen years records had been kept at the works of the company, showing the amount of water entering the furnace in the form of aqueous vapor, and careful observations had been made of its effect upon the working of the furnace. Some years had proved much worse in their effect than others, on account, not only of excessive moisture, but also of great variation in the moisture from day to day, and sometimes within a few hours. It had been found impossible to make a satisfactory percentage of high-silicon foundry-iron in summer, even on high fuel; and for some years the endeavor had been made so to arrange the sales that, during July and August, only a small percentage of the iron produced would be required to carry more than 2 per cent. of silicon. Our larger furnace, running on basic iron, year after year, produced in February a tonnage 20 per cent. higher than in August, 011 a much lower fuel-consumption, while, at the same time, the summer months were marked by " messes," tuyeres closed by slips, and other irregularities, constituting serious additional business losses. It will be easily understood, therefore, that the records made at the Isabella furnace after the installation of the dry blast in 1904 possessed special interest, and were closely watched by us. On the basis of our own experience, we argued that if the moisture could be kept low, and also uniform, the cost of installation would be more than justified. The Blackbird mine is owned by Calera Mining Co., subsidiary of Howe Sound Co. The mine is located in the Salmon National Forest, Lemhi County, Idaho, about 22 miles west of Salmon and 220 miles north of Pocatello. The thought of producing cobalt from a prospect that offered excellent opportunities stimulated everyone connected with this project. But as time went on, it was found that every phase of the development presented unusual difficulties.

THE martensitic transformation occurring at cryogenic temperatures in the bcc ß-phase Cu-Zn binary alloys has been discussed in a number of publication~.1-3 Addition of a second solute element to the binary Cu-Zn alloys enables the ternary martensitic phase to be stable at temperatures above room temperature, and the variation of the MS temperature with third element content has been determined recently4 for a series of Cu-Zn based alloys in which either the zinc content or the electron concentration was maintained at a constant value. The present paper describes some characteristic growth features of martensite observed in ternary alloys. New equipment for seabed sampling, presently at the prototype stage, operates on the principle of diamond core drilling with wire line core barrels and is designed to drill cores from the seabed at depths down to 200 m with a continuous recovery of cores from an attendant vessel. The machine operates on the seabed by remote control from a console on the vessel. Neither installation nor operation requires the use of divers. Principal Applications Principal areas of application for the drill which is dubbed Maricor include investigation drilling in the continental shelf, mapping geological conditions before large drilling platforms are installed and exploring proposed undersea tunnel routes.

The primary purpose of the Institute is to advance the technologic and engineering arts embraced by it through inter- change of knowledge. This can best be done by the presentation and discussion of technical papers by its members. Short practical papers are especially welcome. An author should always satisfy himself that his material is of a quality that will be a credit to him and to the Institute. The preparation of a good paper frequently leads to a reorientation of the author's thoughts, and publication contributes much to the professional standing of the author. Members are urged to submit papers presenting the results of their work. Attention to the following suggestions will greatly further the prompt and efficient handling of manuscripts.

In the development of the Sirosmelt tin smelting process the need has arisen to understand and predict the problems likely to be encountered in optimal furnace operation on larger scales and over wide ranges of operating parameters. To study these parameters in detail with existing pilot plants and production scale plants is prohibitive in terms of cost, time and limitations of furnace design. The Sirosmelt computer model, SMELT, has been developed to simulate the process and to study a range of metallurgical parameters. The model's robust basic form has allowed adaption to a variety of needs. It is now being used to generate data on optimum operating conditions for a commercial scale plant and for operator training.

WE are now assembled in this hall for the eighteenth lecture in honor of the memory of our greatest American metallurgist, Henry Marion Howe. Many of his most intimate contemporaries, led, as was fitting, by Professor Sauveur, have described his vital accomplishments in three fields: as a leader in technical industrial development; in theoretical research; and finally as a teacher and source of inspiration for nearly two generations of students. In 1914 Professor Howe had retired from active teaching, but maintained his laboratory at Columbia University under the care of Arthur G. Levy, with whom he published many of the papers that later were incorporated into his last book, "The Metallography of Steel and Cast Iron." My position at the time was that of personal assistant to Professor Campbell-no pay, no duties, but the great privilege of preparing specimens, taking pictures and attending to some of the current consulting work. Whenever possible, I visited Howe's laboratory to chat with Levy and gather ideas about the wonderful field of metallography-in which I was a rank amateur, rescued by the quiet enthusiasm of Donald Smith of Princeton from an instructorship in civil engineering. Levy let me act as a fly on the wall during the Professor's occasional visits. Busy as he was, Professor Howe took the time and trouble to encourage my interest, as he had done for hundreds of others. He told me how he went about gathering his own information speculating as to causes, considering experiments, and verifying his conclusions. I ventured to mention some tests I had run on the irregular stretching of wires of different metals. He read the small volume I had prepared of ill-assorted facts and fancies and remarked: "Nobody cares for your theories or the history of your tests. Describe what you found as briefly as possible and perhaps I can help you to publish." Curiously enough, among my discards were some autographically recorded load-versus-electrical-resistance measurements. Taken with inadequate knowledge and equipment, these curves did not reproduce consistently, but if the relationship between strain and resistance had then been explored, the latest type of strain gauge might have been in useful service for the past 25 years. Professor Howe was a gifted teacher, perhaps because he was primarily an ardent and assiduous student. His own eagerness to learn and his willingness to revise and extend his opinions constantly encouraged those of his environment to be diligent and painstaking in the pursuit of knowledge. In honoring his memory, I also wish to bring to mind the kindly, humorous and quiet Levy, and join his name again, as it was for too brief a space in the past, with that of many-sided Henry Marion Howe. THE COMMITTEE on Production Control of the Institute has accomplished little or nothing tangible during the last year. For this the chairman must accept responsibility and whatever praise or blame goes with it. However, we have all had plenty of opportunity to observe the results obtained by various producing groups in their attempts to regulate production to meet demand dur¬ing the last few years. It would be putting it mildly to say that these have not been such as to inspire confidence in the methods pursued. The present plight of the wheat, cotton, coffee and sugar growers; the oil, copper, lead, zinc and tin producers, to name a few of the unfortunates, suggests a common cause perhaps beyond their control. There is a growing tendency to question as outmoded the theories of laissez faire economics, with its laws of competition, supply and demand, with price as the automatic regulator. The position is maintained that something new should be substituted because these laws no longer work. Many solutions are offered, ranging in the world at large from the planned economy of Russia, with the profit element removed, to the military controlled economy of Fascism, and in our own country from voluntary curtailment to martial law. But one hardly feels driven by any irresistible logic to put his finger on any one of these proposals, and to say this is the one in which I believe. On turning to one's neighbors, one is still more confused by the realization that this intellectual uncertainty is wide-spread. Isolation or cooperation, protection or free trade, the gold standard, bimetallism or managed currencies, de¬flation or inflation, all have their proponents in whose eyes one or the other of these slogans will afford the panacea for all our ills.

THE use of cadmium as a base for bearing metals is one of the most interesting recent developments in this field. It has caused a strong demand for cadmium and a marked rise in its price. It appeared to the authors, therefore, that the situation might be relieved for users if accept-able substitutes could be developed. A preliminary investigation has revealed that to some extent mercury may be substituted for cadmium. Whether its use is justified cannot be stated at this time. Most of the authors' work has indicated that the addition of mercury to alloys of cadmium and nickel detracts from their desirable physical properties; but this work has not been extended to cover service tests, which might reveal that the addition of low percent-ages of mercury to the cadmium-base alloys would improve their per-formance. It is suggested that at high temperatures both sulfur and iron combine with oxygen. Iron may precipitate at the high temperatures as the oxides of iron, and sulfur also in combination with oxygen as the low solubility sulfates of barium, strontium, calcium, and potassium (alunite). At lower temperature the precipitation results from change of sulfate sulfur to sulfide sulfur, and the iron precipitates as the sulfide.

This paper reviews transportation trends in large base metal open-pit mines in recent years. Particular attention is paid to the unprecedented increases in the cost of oil and its effect on operating costs. Fuel conservation and measures to improve trucking efficiency are considered. The paper also discusses viable alternatives for reducing or eliminating the use of trucks. Various advantages and disadvantages of using conveyors to transport shot rock from the mine are reviewed. The paper concludes with some observations on current policies and trends primarily aimed at mitigating the high cost of energy.

SHORTLY after the middle of the nineteenth century, the invention of the regenerative open-hearth furnace and the development of the Bes-semer process stimulated a, rate of steel production whose magnitude created an unprecedented demand for pig iron. Revolutionary improvements in furnace design, auxiliary equipment, and operating technique enabled the blast furnace to keep abreast of the constantly increasing requirements of the steel mill. The development of improved blowing equipment, more adequate facilities for material handling, and particularly the general use of anthracite and coke to replace the physically weaker charcoal, led to a rapid expansion in both the height and volume of furnaces. Beyond a doubt,, however, the greatest single factor in blast-furnace improvement at this time was the use of the higher blast temperatures made available by the replacement of the recuperative iron pipe stoves by the regenerative Cowper brick stove. The increased blast tempera-ture not only resulted in greater output but also reduced fuel consumption far more than could be explained by the additional heat content of the blast. The progress of iron manufacturing was thus largely mechanical and thermal. Little attention was given tile chemistry of the process until the publication of the investigations of Sir Lowthian Bell.1 Bell's pains-taking experiments and investigations gave to the blast-furnace man his first real scientific conception of blast-furnace chemistry. Bell's recog-nition of the dual function of the carbon, the technical importance of reversible reactions and chemical equilibria, and his conception of the degree of oxidation of the carbon as shown by the analysis of the outgoing gases as a criterion of furnace efficiency, laid the foundation upon which has since been erected the structure of blast-furnace theory.

RECENT announcement of further restrictions on gasoline consumption in the Mid-West and Southwest has focused public attention on current discussions of an oil scarcity. Conflicting arguments are advanced on the one hand that we have plenty of oil and will not need to restrict consumption as soon as transportation facilities are adequate, and on the other hand that a great impending shortage will require most drastic reductions in civilian consumption in order to provide adequate supplies for military purposes. Data can be presented to support both views, the result being that the public is confused and uncertain of where the truth lies. For a nation with about half of the known crude-oil reserves of the world and two thirds of the total production it seems almost incredible to the layman that any shortage can exist. Those familiar with estimates of future demand. however. show increasing concern regarding our ability to meet military demands without further restrictions in civilian use or wasteful production from our remaining reserves. Only by considering such facts as are available and can be made public can a true appraisal be made of whether or not we are faced with a shortage that will amount to a crisis in crude oil.

During World War II the Pocos de Caldas bauxite deposits of Minas Gerais in Brazil yielded some 60,000 tons. Since then they have maintained a small but almost continuous production. Known for many years, the deposits have been reconnoitered by a number of geologists,1-4 but no dimensional study has been possible because there have not been enough exposures to show clearly the depth, bedrock, and habit of occurrence. The deposits are somewhat unorthodox in their occurrence mainly on steep slopes of mountainous terrain. Although the parent rocks are a sequence of alkalic intrusions that bauxitize readily under the proper conditions, bauxitization has not been the dominant weathering process in the area. It is limited to certain localities where important volumes of bauxite have formed by laterization of several rock types, each yielding a distinctive type of bauxite. Bauxitization may be observed in several stages and in both direct and indirect cycles of formation. The deposits are unique in being of demonstrably recent age, so that the conditions under which the bauxite formed are essentially those of the present time. The bauxitization sequence is postulated in Fig. 1.

Operation of the phosphate flotation plant at the Peace valley mine of the International Minerals and Chemical Corporation, Florida, began in the summer of 1942. Since that time several changes have been made in the flowsheet, with resultant increases in metallurgical results. Three flowsheets, together with the comparative plant results, are given in this paper, together with a discussion of the desliming circuit used for preliminary washing of the flotation feed. Fig. I lists the essential units in the original flowsheet at the Peace Valley plant. The figures for tonnage and grade are average for a period of two months. Mineral Separation Airflow cells are used for both the fatty acid and the amine float. Three immediate difficulties presented themselves in the use of this flow sheet: I. Floating a maximum amount of phosphate in the rougher section to give good recovery sent a low-grade concentrate to the silica float, resulting in high costs for amine reagent in that section.

REVOLING slime-tables with stationary sprays and oscillating brushes have for many years been a favorite apparatus used for working slimes in German dressing-works, often displacing Rittinger tables and the many variations of Cornish buddles. The difficulty of building these tables larger than 5 1/2 meters (17 feet) in diameter, increasing the cost and making them unwieldy, rendered it necessary also to concentrate the slimes in several operations, because the travel over so short a length of hearth would not suffice for close concentration. A preliminary sizing is effected in a system of spitzkasten. Herr C. Linkenbach, general manager of the Ems Lead and Silver Works, Germany, devised a buddle, in 1878, which has since worked well and found much favor in Germany, and has been in one instance copied here, at Colorado Springs, without any credit having been given to the original inventor. Linkenbach's plan has been to reverse the functions of the table and the washing apparatus of the old German revolving table. He makes the tables stationary and rotates the washing apparatus,, thus enabling him to save in power, and, within certain limits, to increase the dimensions of the table, without in any way affecting its durability or materially increasing its cost.
