Because of a widely recognized association between breccia pipes of one form or another and many important copper deposits, conditions under which breccia pipes develop have been of great scientific interest for many years. Since these phenomena first attracted attention, many theories have been advanced to explain their origin. This is not unexpected, since it is likely that they have been formed by and under a wide range of conditions. Moreover, the entire subject is confused by the fact that the term breccia pipe is applied to a wide variety of occurrences. To discuss any part of the subject intelligently, therefore, it is necessary to start with definitions of the terms used. In their discussion of the Toquepala deposit, Richard and Courtright have carefully defined the terms they have used in their presentation of a very logical geo- logical history of Toquepala breccias. This is a real contribution, as there is no reference in the literature known to the writer where the history of a series of breccia pipe epochs, confined essentially within one channelway, may be read with the degree of certainty that appears to be possible at Toquepala.

In substance, the international aspects of the petroleum industry, as these relate to the United States, are as follows: The domestic production is not keeping pace with the domestic demands; our best engineering talent warns us of the imminence of a decreased production by our oil wells, although more oil is needed; and the only practical source whence this increasing demand can be supplied for some time to come will be the foreign fields. Other nations have given thought to the future and, in recent years, have shown a tendency to adopt strong nationalistic policies regarding their petroleum resources, policies that hinder or prevent the exploitation of these resources by other nationals. In consequence, we find that, facing a probable shortage of the domestic supply, our nationals are excluded from foreign fields; and this in spite of the fact that foreign nationals have been permitted to enter into and exploit our own oil resources on an equality with American citizens and without hindrance or restrictions. This country has supplied the larger part of the petroleum consumed by the world and yet, with a failing supply imminent, it finds that those countries that, have been drawing upon our resources to supply their needs are showing a tendency to exclude us from their resources. In this way we shall be transferred from a position of dominence to one of dependence; and only by sufferance of those countries that are now seeking financial or political control of petroleum supplies, shall we be able to obtain the oil we will need. Impoetance of Petroleum Petroleum has become, during recent years, one of the essentials of our social and industrial life. All civilized countries recognize that the world is dependent on petroleum as on nothing else except textiles: foodstuffs, coal, and iron. Today, the tendency is toward an ever-increasing consumption of petroleum and its products as new and more efficient uses are found for them. THE zinc-lead mines of the Eagle-Picher Lead Co. are situated in the Tri-state district of Oklahoma-Missouri-Kansas. The company is operating, at the present time, seven mines in the brecciated deposits of the Picher, Okla., camp; two in the water-course ground of the Treece, Kans., camp; two in the open, boulder ground of the Crestline, Kans., camp; and one in the sheet ground of the Pierce City, Mo., camp. The accompanying map (Fig. 1) shows the relation of the rich narrow runs to the other ore-bodies of the district. The runs are designated by cross-hatching so as to distinguish them from narrow drifts that have been driven as prospect drifts or haulage drifts. Figs. 2, 3 and 4 are cross-sections showing the type of formation encountered in the operation of the drills. The Picher camp is in the brecciated type of deposit with some water-course ground encountered, usually near the edge of the deposit. These deposits are flat and fairly uniform so that they can be mined systematically. However, scattered between these deposits are narrow runs that are usually very rich. Up to the present time, most of the prospecting has been done from the surface with churn drills, supplemented with some prospect drifts in the ground, once the mine is opened up. Prospect drifts are expensive, do not give much information except the presence or absence of ore and are therefore not used to any great extent. In the early days of the camp only the larger deposits were found and mined, with an occasional narrow run which was drilled out more or less by sheer luck. Later, more of these narrow rich runs were found and mined, until today many of the properties that were formerly considered worked out are being leased and re-drilled. It is very evident that many of these narrow runs, which are often only 20 ft. wide, can easily be missed by drilling from the surface unless very close drilling is practiced. Discussion of the paper of PHILIP W. HENRY, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 97, January, 1915, pp. 23 to 30. C. ,E. GRUNSKY, JR., San Francisco, Cal. (communication to the Secret ary*).-The difference of opinion of engineers on the subject of depreciation is justified, to some, extent, by the many viewpoints from which such a subject can be considered when applied to properties of widely differing physical characteristics. Mr. Henry takes up the subject of depreciation as applied alone to oil properties, and in doing so makes a clear distinction between amortization and the repair or renewal requirement. After carefully reading the paper the purpose of its author in suggesting a "depreciation" reserve or fund to keep the property at a constant value does not seem clear. As shown by Mr. Henry, the depreciation element as compared with the operating expense per gallon of oil is very large because of the comparatively short life of the oil properties, and it is also evident that such a "depreciation" fund would in a short time contain a very large amount of money. It seems desirable and permissible in income-tax matters to take into account the depreciation of property and to separate from the income such money as is necessary to amortize the invested capital to an extent warranted by the depreciation. However, it does not seem either necessary or desirable to create a large fund which will in time approximate the entire invested capital and which may he invested by the directors, as Mr. Henry suggests, "in the property itself or in outside securities." This method seems cumberome and liable to offer in the reinvestment of such a fund temptations to a directorate that might show more devotion to its own interests than that of the stockholders. A reserve fund is very frequently desirable in mining and oil operations, but to keep up a fund of this magnitude or to reinvest it in outside securities does not seem desirable from a stockholders' standpoint. The. money withdrawn from the receipts to be placed in the depreciation fund (not including replacements and the drilling of new wells necessary to keep up the productiveness) should he returned to the stockholders of the company, not as dividends, but as an amortization of the invested capital.

FLOTATION has been so closely allied with the sulfide minerals and their early and associated oily reagents that the term "oil flotation" has erroneously been applied to the entire flotation process. Today, the term "chemical flotation" might be used to advantage. Flotation literature has dealt primarily with the removal of sulfides from non-sulfide gangues, and the separation of one sulfide from another. Now, the application of the process to the separation of nonsulfide minerals is coming to the fore; and from the standpoint of the number of commercial minerals involved, the flotation of nonsulfides offers the larger field. Here, soap or soap-forming substances, such as the fatty acids and their derivatives, are used; hence there may well be a subdivision of the chemical flotation process called "soap flotation." Early experimenters learned that it was easy to form a froth or foam that would carry a part or all of the ore charge over the lip of the flotation machine; but this could not be regarded as flotation because of the lack of selectivity. Doubtless soap was one of the first reagents tried, and doubtless it was rejected on account of its gangue-carrying properties. Now this same gangue-carrying ability makes soap an acceptable reagent, for we are dealing with that, which among sulfides, is considered "gan-gue." As in the flotation of sulfides, so in the flotation of nonsulfides, the selective flocculation of the mineral and the dispersion of the gangue are the first objectives. In fact, these two phenomena epitomize flotation. They depend upon the unlike surface properties of the respective miner-als; and as long as the components of an ore have unlike surface proper-ties, a separation is possible, at least in theory. Often in nonsulfide flotation it makes little difference which mineral floats and which is depressed; generally only a separation is sought.

The recent growth of a sentiment among cyanide-plant designers against the use of gravity-stamps for the crushing preliminary to cyanidation may be said to date from the almost simultaneous perfection of the ribbed tube-rnill liner and of the tall, air-agitation tank. The first step in the resulting change of practice mas the universal adoption of the tube-mill for fine-grinding and the use of coarse screening on the battery. This was the beginning of the surrender of supremacy by the gravity-stamp; since merely the single fact that it was a more economical machine for crushing fine had retained it in favor as conlpared with ball-mills, rolls, or steam-stamps. The surrender, however, is not yet complete.

Graphite is one .of the so-called minor nonmetals that have become of major importance during the present conflict. Requirements of the domestic industry for graphite are relatively small and uses have changed so greatly in the past 25 years that different types, with few exceptions, are more nearly interchangeable in use. However, the quality of the graphite required for crucibles is exacting and under present manufacturing practices only a small part of the world production can be utilized economically by this industry. Graphite, for the domestic crucible industry, was supplied almost entirely by imports from Madagascar and Ceylon before the present war. The quantity required has been increased by the war and the greatest demand is for Madagascar flake. The fall of France to Germany in 1941 and the Japanese expansion southward threatened our supply of crucible-grade graphite, therefore the domestic industry was revived to supplement imports and to act as insurance in the event of complete stoppage of imports. Two plants were constructed for the Government, one at Ashland, Alabama, called the Crucible Flake Graphite Co., operated by Haile Mines, Inc., and one near West Chester, Pennsylvania, operated by the Benjamin Franklin Flake Graphite Co. Loans were made by the Reconstruction Finance Corporation to the Alabama Flake Graphite Co. at Ashland, the Ceylon Graphite Co., at Goodwater, Ala., and the Southwestern Graphite Co., at Burnet, Texas. However, by the end of 1943 the import situation had improved and it was no longer necessary to continue Government assistance to mine and stock-pile the high-cost domestic material. Graphite is found in virtually every country of the world. Most occurrences are of no economic importance because of their poor quality, prohibitive mining and milling costs, inaccessibility, and poor location with reference to the industrial centers where graphite is used. The principal commercial deposits are found in Ceylon, Madagascar, Chosen (Korea), United States, U. S. S. R., Canada, Germany, and Mexico. Graphite is a typical international mineral in that it is utilized mainly in countries noted for industrial activities, whereas the two islands, Ceylon and Madagascar, which produce the major part of the world's high-grade graphite, are virtually devoid of any manufacturing establishments requiring its use. For many years, geologists have inferred a connection between the evolution of the earth's crust and ore deposition, a connection coming under the heading of metallogeny. In recent years the concept of metallogeny has assumed major importance in the exploration planning of Russian geologists in their quest for new mineral sources. As defined by Radkevich, metallogeny is "the science which studies the laws governing the distribution of ore deposits in the earth's crust." However, since it can be argued that metallogeny does not contain enough certitude to be classified as a "science," it would be more appropriately defined as the study of metallogenic provinces, and metallogenic epochs.

Our shop started up in April of 1969, and during its 8th month of operation produced over 300,000 tons. Production continued to increase, and by January of 1970 tonnage rates significantly above 300,000 tons per month were being realized. Ours is a three vessel shop, producing 200 ton heats, with a normal grade breakdown indicating more than one half semi-killed carbon steel, with the balance distributed over rimmed and capped steel, alloy steel, killed carbon, and special killed drawing quality steel. The recent christening of a continuous billet caster has dictated that close to a quarter of our liquid steel be delivered to the caster.

This paper describes an experimental method for monitoring diesel-generated exhaust gas pollutants in a deadended drift to assess the effect of control approaches. Experiments were conducted to determine the relative merits of these ventilation configurations: no auxiliary ventilation, induction ventilation at the entrance to the drift, and ventilation of the dead-ended drift with positive displacement tubing. The drift used in this experimental work was approximately 32 m long and slightly downsloping, with an everage height and width of 2.4 and 8.6 m, respectively. For this drift, it was found that ventilation with positive displacement tubing provided the best removal of diesel-generate pollutants. Induction ventilation appeared to be the least effective of the three methods examined.

TAKING into consideration the present state of geologic knowledge and present economic status of the oil industry, we have attempted to outline the six principal districts in which oil occurs and new pools may be expected. The map, Fig. 1, also shows the location of the present productive pools-about 100 in number. The unshaded areas represent territory where drilling depths to known sands are prohibitive with present development and pumping methods, or such sands are absent or give promise of such small production that deep wildcat tests are unwarranted. They include, also, territory where the oil-source materials are absent or not of the right type; and where shales are insufficient in the stratigraphic section to prevent the escape of oil and gas. Some doubtful districts are also included, such as the Pecos Valley, where the percentage of rigid beds, sandstones and limestones may be too great; and the Nacogdoches oil field, where small shallow production is obtained but where deep or large production is unlikely. The map is not offered as final but in the hope that it may prevent the expenditure of large sums in attempted development of unlikely territory and as the warning that those who drill in the unshaded territory do so at great risk. Those who drill in such territory should have large sums available for pioneering and experimenting and only attempt it if they can well afford to lose the money expended. Search in the shaded or cross-hatched areas is hazardous enough and should only be undertaken after detailed geologic surveys. Out of a total area of 256,000 sq. mi., the oil and gas districts comprise about 80,000 sq. mi.; the territory embraced in these districts is shown in the shaded portions. This may ultimately be increased somewhat by the addition of some minor districts, but such additions will be offset by territory probably now included in the unshaded areas. The shaded areas probably contain 98 per cent. or more of the ultimate production of the state, despite the fact that they represent only 31 per cent. of the total area.

W. W. Mein: One of the most amusing things in Nevada City – I was born and was going to school there - was that my mother made overcoats for us, and because they were different from other boys’ overcoats, we’d hide them under a bridge and pick them up on the way home. I left Nevada City with my parents when I was about eleven years old, and moved to Oakland. This was caused by the closing down of the hydraulic mines and my father being send to the El Cayo mine in Venezuela, which was then one of the richest gold mines in the world. Hamilton Smith operated the hydraulic mines in California, and when they were closed down by the Sawyer decision, he was persuaded by the Rothschilds to go to London. There, together, they formed the London Exploration Co.

AMERICAN pioneers first discovered "commercial" salt in western New York State. Geologists gave the classically correct name of Salina to the salt bearing strata of New York. Rock salt occurs in rocks of approximately the same age and stratigraphic position as New York's Salina "group", to the south and southwest, in western Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio and northwestern West Virginia. Sodium chloride and associated salts occur in brines throughout much of the same area as the rock salt. Brines also are found in areas well beyond the margins of that under which the rock salt lies, especially to the west in Ohio and to the south in West Virginia. The occurrence of the brines in the same area as the rock salt is almost always coincidental rather than indicative of a physical association.

The current outlook for financing new copper production is not very encouraging. At a time when companies are slogging through a protracted period of low prices as well as having to accept lower profits due to more stringent tax and royalty schedules, banks are beginning to require companies to take a greater equity interest in new projects. Mineral resource financing, including copper, seems to have lost much of its appeal to the lending institutions, and loans of any kind to many of the developing countries -from which over half of new copper capacity could be expected to come-are being examined much more critically than they were in the late 1960's and early 1970's.

AT the annual meeting of the Institute 2 years ago, a paper,1 " Requirements of Refractories for Open Hearths," was presented by F. W. Davis and G. A. Bole of the U. S. Bureau of Mines. In a brief foreword, D. A. Lyon stated that the paper was not to report the results obtained but rather to present an outline to serve as a basis for discussion. The essential parts of an open-hearth furnace were described and the conditions under which they operate. Some constructive discussion followed the reading of the paper. One of the first fellowship investigations undertaken by the Bureau of Mines in 1924 under the cooperative agreement with Carnegie Institute of Technology, through the Metallurgical Advisory Board, was to determine service conditions of open-hearth refractories. The present paper gives the results of this work which was done in the Pittsburgh district and was in charge of the authors. Material contributions in the form of data were contributed by E. N. Bauer, J. W. Campbell, G. H. Pfeiffer and A. Grodner, Carnegie Institute of Technology research fellows. The study covered 18 mos.

Proven and developed oil reserves, and productive capacity increased during 1943 in the fieids of the Rocky Mountain region. Oil production during the year was nearly 45 million barrels, or slightly less than in 1942. The rate of production at the start of 1944 was slightly less than at the start of 1943. Pipe-line projects scheduled for completion during 1944 should permit a substantial increase in the rate of production. Wildcat exploration was more extensive in Montana during 1943 than in other states in the region. The results of wildcat drilling were unsatisfactory, although new oil fields were discovered on the Gebo, Little Buffalo Basin and Steamboat Butte structures of Wyoming, the Gage anticline of Montana, and the Clark Lake structure of Colorado. The area of the structures on which the discovery wells were drilled is known to be considerable, but further drilling is required to determine the importance of these fields. The most important increase in proven reserves resulted from the drilling to newly discovered deeper producing formations in the Elk Basin and other fields of the Big Horn Basin area of northern Wyoming. Lack of a market and unfavorable prices for heavy black oils had prevented complete exploration of favorable areas in the Rocky Mountain region for many years. In particular, the effect on further exploitation of the Big Horn Basin area had been quite serious. The increased demands for all oils created by the war and an increase in price in February 1943, combined later with Government approval of construction of pipe lines from the Big Horn Basin area to the Billings and the Casper districts, provided a basis for undertaking a drilling program. The important additions to reserves were made by drilling in previously discovered fields. The newly discovered fields resulted from drilling on favorable structures which had been known for several years. A continuation of the favorable results obtained during 1943 seems possible only if further testing of the newly discovered fields is satisfactory and if drilling on less favorable known structures or geophysical prospects results in the discovery of new fields. The amount of drilling in the Rocky Mountain states of Colorado, Montana and Wyoming, was about the same during 1943 as .in 1942. However, owing to the fact that a number of wells of large potential production were completed in the Elk Basin field, the total initial production of the prodicing wells was- nearly twice as great for 1943 as for 1942. Explorational activity at the end of 1943 seemed to be directed to geophysical methods, which are required to discover structures hidden beneath the rocks of Tertiary age in the Powder River and other large sedimentary basins. Is the value of rock sealant on radon control destroyed by changes in barometric pressure? While an article by Dr. Gerald Schroeder in the June 1977 issue of MINING ENGINEERING suggests this, it should be noted this is not necessarily true as the ensuing discussion reveals. Before analyzing the data leading to Dr. Schroeder's conclusions, some comments on their source are needed. The figures were collected during a 1973 US Bureau of Mines test of radon barrier coatings in the Dakota uranium mine near Grants, N.M. Results of that test were reported by Franklin, et al 3,4 in 1975. The mine is essentially dry and ore occurrence is within a lightly cemented, porous medium-to coarse-grained sandstone of high permeability and radon emanation rate.
