The quality of water for steam boilers is a serious question in Illinois, and has been the occasion of many investigations, undertaken either for the discovery of sources of a better supply, or for the purification of the supplies already at hand. LOCATION OF SUPPLIES. The sources of supply of which this paper treats lie along the right of way of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad Company, and form a nearly straight line from Chicago, Illinois, on Lake Michigan, to Burlington, Iowa, on the Mississippi River. The supplies consist of surface-, ground- and deep well-waters ; their locations are given in Fig. 1, which is adapted from a map of Illinois published by the Illinois Railroad Commissioners. The influence of the geological formation on the water-supply of Illinois is fully treated in an article in the Seventeenth Annual Report of the U. S. . EVEN before the arrival of Cortes in 1519, the history of Mexico was closely linked to that of its mineral production; the mining activities of the Aztecs being thus described by Clavigero, one of the early historians: In the mountains of Anahuac there abound in veins all kinds of metals, and infinite variety of other fossiliferous products. The Aztecs obtained gold from the countries of the Cohuijques, of the Mixtecas, of the Zapotecas and from various other places. They gathered that precious metal usually in grain, from the sands of the rivers, keeping a certain portion for the crown. They obtained silver from the mines of Taxco, of Tzumpango and others; however, this metal was not as esteemed by them as by other neighboring nations. They had two kinds of copper; one hard, which they used instead of iron to make sickles; lances and all kinds of rural and military instru-ments and another, soft, with which they made kettles, goblets and other receptacles. This metal abounds mainly in the province of Zacatula and in that of Cohuijques, which at present is in the kingdom of Michoacan. They obtained tin from the mines of Taxco and lead from those of Izmiquilpan, located in the country of the Otomies. From the tin they made money, and the lead, we know they sold in the market places, but we ignore the uses to which they applied it. They also had mines of iron in Tlaxcala, in Taxco and in other places; but they either had not discovered them, or did not know how to make use of the metal they contained. In Chilapa there were mines of mercury, and in other places there were mines of sulphur, alum, vitriol, cinnabar, cohre and of a white earth which they esteemed highly. As regards mercury and vitriol, we do not know of what use (they were to them; the other metals they used in paintings and dyes. There were then great abundance of amber and asphalt-bitu-men of Judea-on the coast of the seas and many cities of that territory paid tribute of one and the other to the kingdom of Mexico. They mounted the amber in gold, and it was only used as ornament and display by them. With the asphalt they made certain perfumes.

These impurities are perhaps the most important things in steel—especially steel made by the oxidation processes—the effect of which has not been at least approximately determined. By oxidation processes I mean the Bessemer and Siemens-Martin, during which the metalloids in the charge are removed by oxidation. It has been truly said that it is a clear advantage to have a new name for a new thing. To secure this and to economize space, let us adopt the name sonim (plural sonims) to designate the solid non-metallic impurities existing in steel or other metal. I would define a sonim as a solid non-metallic portion of matter existing as an impurity in metal. A piece of sand, brick, clay, or such material, imbedded in metal, would be considered as a foreign body, not as an impurity, and therefore not a sonim. The studies of sonims of which the results have been published hitherto, have been made chiefly or wholly on finished ar at least on cold steel, without much, if any, regard to the specific methods by which the steel was made. While many of the results so obtained are valuable, they give little help in determining the cause, effect, or cure of' the disease. It is not enough, in such a study, to know merely the commercial name of the process; for within the field of each process lies a great number of possible variations, each of which will yield a result differing in some respect from all others; and the control of sonims is particularly dependent on the metallurgical treatment of the metal, because of the inability of analytical chemistry to throw much light on their presence, condition, and effect, as they usually occur in conlmercial steels. The microscope aids more, perhaps, than chemistry in their study.

The Mississippi river was discovered by French explorers that came southwestward, by way of the Great Lakes, from eastern Canada. Vignan, Joliet, De Champlain, and others of the French pioneers in the first half of the seventeenth century, dreamed of a short cut to China by means of the great waterways they explored. In a geographical book published in London in 1726 by Daniel Coxe an account is given of "a new and curious discovery and relation betwixt the river Meschachebe [Mississippi] and the South Sea, which separates America from China, by means of several large rivers and lakes". Louis Joliet, a fur-trader, and Jacques Marquette, a Jesuit missionary, reached the Mississippi and paddled their canoes on its broad waters on June 17, 1673.* They descended the river as far as the entry of the Arkansas tributary, and then returned overland to Canada, being deterred from going farther south by reason of Indian hostility. Several years later Robert de La Salle, a French trader, starting from Quebec, went westward to Lake Michigan and thence to the Illinois river, which he and his comrades descended in their canoes to the junction with the Mississippi, and then followed it to the sea. They reached the Gulf of Mexico on April 9, 1682. Thus the great central waterway of North America was made known. These French-Canadian voyageurs, or boatmen, traded with the Indians for furs in the Upper Mississippi valley, and when in need of bullets they noticed the outcrops of lead ore, from which, probably in the last decade of the seventeenth

The solubility of niobium carbide in y iron has been determined for the temperature range 1000" to 1300°C from the carbon content of a series of Fe-Nb alloys equilibrated with hydrogen-methane mixtures. The production of petroleum in Venezuela during 1931 was approximately 118,767,000 bbl., a decrease of 18,904,000 bbl., or 13.7 per cent, compared with the previous year. This is the first break in production, which has risen steadily since 1920, and is attributable to restriction of output and drilling operations, in harmony with lessened demand, rather than to any real decline in potential production. Venezuela ranked third among the world's producers, having lost second place to Russia. The Bolivar coastal fields, which were extended approximately 14 miles southward during the year, continued to supply most of the oil. La Concepcion, Los Manueles and Quiriquire all showed marked increases. A new field of light oil was discovered on the north coast near Puerto Cumarebo, State of Falcon. Exports declined 15.7 per cent, from 137,377,000 bbl. in 1930 to about 115,800,000 bbl. in 1931. Crude oil in storage at the end of the year amounted to 7,450,000 bbl., a decrease of 2,150,000 as compared with 1930. Tankage utilized is about 40 per cent of the available space. A drastic decline in drilling activity reduced the number of wells completed in producing areas from 401 in 1930 to 116 in 1931. Only three wells were drilled in the Lagunillas field proper, but, the amount of closed-in production and proven acreage gave assurance of a satisfactory potential output. Of the 1580 wells drilled to the close of 1931 in the producing areas of the Bolivar Coast, 631 were active and 853 were closed in; 96 had been abandoned. The status of the active wells at the end of 1931 was as follows: flowing, 331; pumping, 99; gas-air lift, 201. Producing wells closed in numbered 452; workovers, 8; totally inactive, 393. Lago Petroleum Corp. and Venezuela Gulf Oil Co. placed in operation the first units of their electric power plants, the former at Punta Gorda and the latter at Las Morochas, and are replacing steam power in their operations as rapidly as possible. Compressor stations were also installed for use in connection with air-gas lift operations. A considerable volume of gas was treated in gasoline extraction plants, the tail gas being recom-pressed and utilized together with natural high-pressure gas, for stimulation of production.

SINCE the publication of Prof. J. W. Richards's paper on The Schumacher Briquetting Process,2 this process has been in operation on a practical .scale in two plants in the United States, and a few notes on the results obtained may he of interest. An experimental plant, consisting of a toggle press and a hydraulic press, was installed at Johnstown, Pa., together with the necessary bins and other equipment, and an attempt was made to briquette a mixture of Mahoning fines and blast, furnace flue dust, in a ratio of 7 parts of ore to 3 parts of dust. The results were unsatisfactory, in that the briquettes made were not hard enough to stand the severe handling to which they were subjected in the various transferences necessary between the press and the furnace. The trouble was clue to several causes: First, the mechanical arrangement of the plant, which did not lend itself to a proper hardening and loading of the briquettes into the cars. Second, the irregular composition of the flue dust, as to both its lime and its fine coke contents. Third, the variability of the moisture content of the ore, and its viscosity when wet. Fourth, the ratio of fine ore to flue dust; that is, it was attempted to bind in too large a quantity of fine ore for the small amount of flue dust used. The first trouble could be overcome, and has been improved upon in the plant as it stands to-day. The second trouble was important, because of the small amount of dust used as a binder, and might have been easily removed by mixing the flue dust of the different furnaces, which, however, was never done. The third difficulty was more serious, but could have been partly solved, had it been possible to meet this along with the fourth difficulty, by decreasing the percentage of ore in the briquettes. It was proposed to do this, but it seems that the problem at the works in question is, primarily, to prepare Mahoning fines for reduction in the blast furnace, and only secondarily to use up the flue dust, and a solution along this line did not seem to be interesting.

The mechanism of the oxidation of high-purity copper has been studied at temperatures from 500° to 981°C employing gravimetric, high-temperature microscopic and inert marker techniques. An investigation of the adhesion of copper oxides was also made. The oxidation of copper is found to be parabolic at all temperatures. It is concluded that the controlling mechanism is the outward diffusion of CU+ ions through the Cu2O layer, but the mechanism of diffusion is modified by the state of compressive stress in the oxide layer at the oxidation temperature. At temperatures below the transition from elastic to plastic behavior of Cu2O the growth stresses reach a value sufficiently high to cause CuO whiskers to be extruded. The extrusion of whiskers results in the injection of a large number of vacancies into the CuO. The Cu20 layer grows by the advance of the CuzO/CuO interface into vacancy-rich CuO. Since there is an adequate supply of non -thermally created vacancies, the activation energy for oxidation is that required to move the Cu+ ion through the appropriate saddle point to a neighboring vacancy, which has been determined to be 20,000 cal per mole. At temperatures at which the Cu20 can deform plastically the stresses are never high enough to cause whiskers to form. thus vacancies must be supplied by themal activation and as a result the activation energy increases to 40.000 cal per mole. ALTHOUGH extensive studies of the oxidation kinetics of pure copper have been made in the past. the mechanism has received relatively little attention. As a result, certain features of the kinetic data have not been satisfactorily explained' For example, several workers1,2 have reported that the activation energy for oxidation in the range from 500° to 700° C was about 20,000 cal per mole whereas that above

UNDER the caption "fault," geologists intend to include all mass movements of solid rocks over adjacent rock masses. When these are studied long after their origin, however, circumstances make it possible to recognize as "fault" only formations showing clear evidence of actual movement of one side with' respect to the other. Necessarily the chief evidence consists of the offset of a vein, bed, or other key structure. Planes of movement parallel to the bedding; or nearly so, are recognized with difficulty or are overlooked and hence many important faults are wholly unrecorded. Indeed, among standard American references on structural geology, one alone emphasizes the importance of bedding-plane movements and that' one only briefly1. For some time the writer, cognizant of this difficulty, has paid special attention to such movements, both as observed in the field and as recorded in the literature. It is believed that enough data are now at hand to justify a short-discussion. Its purposes are fivefold. It is desired first to briefly classify and describe at least the more common kinds of bedding-plane faults, and second, to examine the causes and manner of their formation, at least in instances where the subject has not yet been well covered by other investigators. Third, certain by-products of bedding-plane movements are of such conspicuous importance to the economic geologist and mining engineer as to merit mention. Fourth, concrete illustrations should be placed before the reader in order to lend reality and to furnish a basis of comparison with his experience; such illustrations will necessarily be scattered through the text of this paper. They' are only in part from the writer's own field observations. The fifth and prime objective of this paper is to direct attention to the great importance of movements on the bedding planes, in the hope that the recognition of such movements and their significance may simplify mining problems.

A procedure whereby the completeness of search is calculated by using the area of influence of exploratory drill holes or samples is extended to allow for errors of recognition. The size, shape, and orientation of potential targets are mapped in a probabilistic sense on the array of drill holes or samples. The method can be used either to determine how well explored are the subregions within a previously drilled or sampled area, or to test proposed alternative search strategies. Examples of the use of the method demonstrate the complexity of sequential search when the areas of influence of drill holes or samples overlap.

The composition of steel and the theory of its heat treatment have been so ably discussed elsewhere that it is unnecessary to go into the subject here. The purpose of this paper is to describe briefly the method of treating drill steel at the Copper Range mines, giving some of the troubles encountered and the manner in which they were overcome or corrected. To study the matter properly, it was necessary to devise a system of records that would show the actual underground performance of the drills. To illustrate this system, the records of the Champion mine are used, as it is at this mine that most of the work along these lines has been done. Reports from each drill machine are made daily by the shop and mine, and tables compiled from these reports show the footage drilled, steel broken, drills received and sent out at the shop, drills sharpened, and bits cut off. These data show what each machine or party is doing and whether the miners' supply of drills is kept up to date. There have been times when the supply of drills has been short and time lost by the miner in looking for drills. The daily records show the number and condition of drills on hand at all times. Under the old method of sharpening, the drills were heated in a coke furnace, the proper degree of heat being judged by color. Then they were sharpened in a machine, reheated in a second coke furnace where the proper heat was again determined by color, and quenched in water. While this method was fairly successful in the hands of a careful workman and for the solid steel used in the old piston drill machine, the introduction of the faster water machine, using hollow steel, produced changes both underground and in the shop. Much more was expected of the hollow-steel and hammer-type machine, with its improved method of rotation, but troubles due to breakage, burnt bits, uneven tempering, etc., at once appeared.

This mine, known also as the A very Mine, is situated on Petite Anse Island, Iberia Parish, Louisiana. The island is about four miles from Vermillion Bay, an arm of the Gulf of Mexico, and is one of four islands or hills surrounded by the sea-marsh, as shown in the accompanying map. (Fig. 1.) A fifth, Joe Jefferson's Island, or hill, is some distance from the sea-marsh. These five islands: Belle Isle, Cote Blanche,Grand Cote, Petite Anse and Jefferson, appear to be the tops of submerged hills, and occupy a line having nearly a northwest trend. To the north are a series of hillocks that extend at intervals to the hills of Northern Louisiana, which in turn appear to run into the Ozarks of Arkansas. New Mexico established an annual record by producing 38,897,741 bbl. of oil during 1940. This was approximately 6 per cent greater than the 1939 production of 36,746,840 bbl. The daily average produc-tion was 106,569 bbl. New Mexico retained its position as the seventh oil-producing state. The recommendations of the United States Bureau of Mines were followed by the Oil Conservation Commission in setting the monthly state allowable. At the beginning of the year the average top allowable for each qc-acre unit was 40 bbl. and at the close of the year it was 36 bbl. Remedial work by the operators has been extremely beneficial and satisfactory in reducing the gas-oil ratios in various fields. Gas formerly blown into the air is now being processed by numerous casinghead plants. The Oil Conservation Commission, with the full cooperation of the Proration Office and operators, has taken bottom-hole pressure surveys and has done considerable remedial work in various fields. Two new oil fields and one gas field were discovered in New Mexico during 1940. Numerous extensions to the existing fields were made. Some of these were definitely wildcats in the same townships designated as fields and some, although called extensions, were more than 3 miles from production. Lea County continued to be the largest oil-producing county in the state, with a production of 33,976,394 bbl. It had the largest number of completions during 1940, with 303 oil wells, 9 gas wells and 13 dry holes—a total of 325 wells. Eddy County was the next most active county, with 239 completions, of which 163 were oil wells, 8 gas wells and 68 dry holes. It produced 4,405,158 bbl. of oil during the year. The increased activity in Eddy County and the completion of a large number of producing oil wells have created a transportation problem that can be solved only by additional pipe-line facilities. During the year Eddy County was unable to produce 1,500,000 bbl. of its allowable oil, because there was no pipe-line outlet. There were 601 wells completed in New Mexico in 1940, of which 478 were oil wells, 22 gas wells and IOI dry holes. This was a decline of approximately 9.5 per cent in the number of completions compared with 1939, when 659 wells were drilled. Southeastern New Mexico Lea County.—The largest producing field in Lea County was the Monument field, with 6,894,475 bbl.; followed by Eunice with 6,559,348 bbl. and Vacuum with 4,743,065 bbl. THE history of fundamental research in mining is not one of which the profession can be particularly proud. It has been one of the slowest industries in applying the fundamental sciences to the solution of many of its more difficult problems. True, many of the processes are not adaptable to laboratory techniques, and much of the work must, of necessity, be done in the field. It is for this reason that the mining executive seldom has been conscious of the value of research on a laboratory scale on problems pertaining strictly to mining. Most of them, however, fostered much testing in the allied fields of ore dressing and metallurgy.

TRINIDAD, which has never been. seriously consid-ered as a large oil producer, has recently taken a new lease on its oil life through active development work being carried on by a newly organized American company that has been conspicuously successful in the short time in which it has operated on the island. From an oil operator's point of view Trinidad pos-sesses numerous natural advantages which are not found in any other oil producing country. The climate, while tropical, is healthy. The nights are always cool. Deep-water shipping ports in protected waters are available within short pipe-line distance from the pro-ducing fields. The distance from Trinidad to the At-lantic seaboard of the United States is less than from the Gulf Coast or from Mexico. The labor supply is abundant and can be had at reasonable rates. The island enjoys a good, stable government under British rule and is traversed by a net-work of excellent govern-ment roads. From a production standpoint the fields being de-veloped by Trinidad Oil Fields, Inc., the company re-ferred to above, present interesting problems which are being successfully solved. The oil sands are extremely fine; some of them having over 50 per cent passing 100- mesh screen and, with the exception of the Palo Seco field, the sands are loose, with shale-breaks and shale capping and with rock pressures running up to 600 lb. per square inch. Rotary drilling is universal, as the formations encountered are soft Tertiary shales, clays, sandy shales and sands, with occasional sandstone and lime shells, which are easily drilled with the rotary. As high as 600 ft. of hole in 24 hr. has been made in some of this company's wells. Production is at present obtained at depths ranging from 500 to 2500 ft. but further development will probably result in deeper pro-duction being obtained. The oil being produced ranges from 21 deg. to 37 deg. Bé gravity and is all asphaltic base oil.

Prior to use of this model siphon finisher, the only means of evaluating metallurgical performance of the siphon finisher was by pilot plant studies. These are costly and require large quantities of material. A model siphon finisher and a test procedure which permits the evaluation of siphon finisher metallurgical performance has been developed. Metallurgical results between the model siphon finisher and pilot plant or commercial units show fairly good correlation. The upgrading of magnetic taconite concentrates by hydraulic concentration has been practiced for several years. In the 1940's, Braund1 used a multistage upflow classifier to upgrade magnetized magnetic concentrates. In present taconite plants, the SiphonSizer, marketed by Dorr-Oliver, Inc., has been particularly suitable for upgrading magnetic concentrates. When the hydraulic SiphonSizer is used to upgrade the concentrates in the finishing portion of the overall flowscheme, the unit will be called a siphon finisher to distinguish this application from classification. Prior to this work the only means of evaluating the metallurgical performance of the siphon finisher was by pilot plant studies which are costly and require large quantities of material. Therefore, it was desirable to develop a model siphon finisher and a test procedure which would simulate siphon finisher performance and require only small samples of material. This model would permit the evaluation of small samples such as drill core samples and be useful in evaluation of commercial siphon finisher design and performance. THE SIPHON FINISHER The siphon finisher, as shown in Fig. 1, is a tank equipped with a system of water jets which distribute the hydraulic water uniformly across the bottom of the vessel with an energy release for agitation in the teeter bed. The feed to the siphon finisher is intre duced through a feed well in the center of the unit. The silica and middling particles overflow a peripheral weir into the overflow launder. The magnetite fraction is discharged by a siphon or a modulated discharge valve. The oil industry in the Soviet Union closed the 1929-1930 operating year fulfilling its assigned program. During this period of time, however, no basic improvements were noted within the industry. A careful study of the conditions indicates that disorganization in most branches increased continually; that supply and transportation problems are approaching a state of breakdown; that labor problems become increasingly difficult and that the estimates for 1931-1933 period are too large. The production of all Russian fields increased by 27,200,000 bbl., as compared with the 1928-1929 operating year, while the next year's program anticipates a further increase of 46,000,000 bbl., and the 1933 plans call for an amazing total of 330,000,000 bbl., or over 150 per cent, more than the production of the operating year that has just closed. Table 1 shows petroleum production in Russia by individual areas and fields from 1916, and furnishes estimates for the three coming years, which constitute the balance of the Five-year plan. A brief analysis of Table 1 will show that the Soviet Planning Commission anticipates that the fully developed fields of the Apsheron-Baku will double their production by 1933, .as compared with 1929-1930, and that the old Grozny fields, which are already showing a tendency to decline, will increase their output from 44,110,000 bbl. in 1929-1930 to 68,000,000 bbl. in 1933. Furthermore, in 1933 new fields are slated to produce not less than 100,000,000 bbl., a figure which even under most favorable conditions in Russia would be hard to achieve. Of course, Russia could develop such production, because the country is not lacking in the prospective reserves, but the transportation in the country today (as in the past.) is in such poor shape that neither the supply of a gigantic oil industry nor the movement of its products is within the realm of possibility. Table 1 shows the future estimated crude oil production as required by the Five-year plan, and also as reasonably estimated by the author, taking into account natural declines in old fields, slow development of new areas and the deficiency of the transport. The method of seismic reflection prospecting has many times been compared to sound ranging, a process that became familiar to many during the World War. According to this very simple theory, the dynamite goes off and sends out a compression wave, which meets a reflecting horizon and returns to the surface, where it is recorded and the elapsed time of its travel in the earth accurately determined. Computations are then made on the general theory that the longer the elapsed time, the greater the depth of the reflecting bed. While this serves to give an idea of the fundamental basis of the process, it suggests a simplicity that does not exist in the life history of the various waves set up by a dynamite explosion in the earth. To begin with, a seismic wave in the earth does not obey the same simple laws of propagation that apply to a sound wave in the air. The property of strength in shear possessed by solids introduces a factor that sets such waves apart from the ordinary air waves. Also, the transmission charactcristics of the earth vary widely from place to place, and a fairly accurate knowledge of the space relationships of these variations is necessary if the final results are to be understood.
