Gentlemen : If my first words were other than those of thanks for the high honor of being called to preside over the American Institute of Mining Engineers, I should do injustice alike to you and to my own sense of the obligation, under which I have been placed by your voluntary choice. When the position was first suggested to me, I resolutely declined to allow the use of my name, on the ground that, by training and occopation, I was not entitled to this honor, which, it then seemed to me, should be conferred only on a professional engineer. In fact, the history of the Institute, which had honored itself, as well as my distinguished predecessors, David Thomas, Rossiter W. Raymond, and Alexander L. Holley, by elevating then] to its highest office, seemed to indicate the line and the limit of safe precedent, in which I did not then see how I could be included. But my scruples were finally removed by the consideration that, as in the course of human industry, the pioneer, of whom Mr. Thomas was so marked a type, must precede the mining engineer, so fitly personified in Dr. Raymond, and be followed by the mechanical engineer, whose incarnation we behold in Mr. Holley; so all these must be supplemented by the man of affairs and finance, in order that "enterprises of great pith and moment" may be prosecuted to a successful issue. I felt, therefore, that I had no longer any right to resist your preference, or to deprive myself of what I must regard as the crowning honor of an active career. On an occasion like the present it seems appropriate to review the history in this country, during the last hundred years, of those industries which the Institute of Mining Engineers specially represents. There is much in the story with which other members of this body are more familiarly acquainted than myself; yet I fancy that to all of them, and not less to our distinguished and most heartily welcome gnests from abroad, a comprehensive outline of the progress of mining and metallurgy in the United States mill prove interesting. I ask your attention, therefore, to a condensed account of that subject, embracing a statement of the beginnings of the industry on our shores, of the notable events attending its increase, and of its present

Pressing of powdered metal parts is best done in the direction of the shortest extension of the piece, to avoid too great a loss of pressing force through internal iriction. As long as curved surfaces, re-cessej, or offsets occur only parallel to this shortest axis of pressure, no special difficulties arise: the cross sections, perpendicular to the pressure, do not vary, nor does the shape of the parts change during compression except for a gradually reduced thickness (Fig. IA). The problem becomes more dificult, however, when the curved surfaces or recesses are perpendicular to the shortest axis of the part (Fig. IB) Two processes for molding uniformly dense parts with complicated shapes from powdered metals are described in detail in this paper. Both can be employed successfully by those trained in the art. The first refers to curved parts; the second is especially adapted to parts having one or more recesses or steps. Both methods, as set forth here, are applied under the condition that presents the more difficult problem. For clarity, before description of the two practical methods, the variable factors in molding powdered metal parts will be reviewed, then an idealized procedure will be considered briefly. Variable Factors in Molding Powdered Metal Parts Compression Ratio Compression ratio is defined as the proportion of the final relative density of the compact to the apparent density of the powder. For iron powder of an apparent density of 3.0, for example, a compression ratio of 2 1/2:1 would be required to produce a compressed compact of 7.5 density; whereas for another iron powder having an apparent density of only 1.5, a compression ratio of 5:1 would be required to produce the same density. The lower the powder's apparent density, the greater must be the compression ratio for pressing compacts of high density.

INTRODUCTION THE deposition of metalliferous lode systems takes place at considerable depths and no one may observe the process. We see only the end results of the process and from these we seek to construct a theory that will account for them. Because there is an obvious relation between many lode systems and intrusive igneous masses, it is a natural inference that they have formed by fluids that were expelled from such masses. The metalliferous lode systems have been deposited by ascending thermal fluids that have risen mainly from great irregular bodies of intruding magmas which are called batholiths. Probably 95 per cent of such lode systems have formed in connection with acidic or "granitic" batholiths and probably less than 5 per cent have formed in connection with basic intrusives. The study of lode ores, therefore, should include the study of the intrusion and differentiation of the batholith. It was noted long ago1 that certain tin-bearing deposits are commonly associated with small stocks. That small stocks are cupolas of larger intrusive masses has generally been recognized. Butler,2 in his studies of the ore deposits of Utah, showed that the chief deposits in Utah are in and near the stocks; that is near the "apically truncated

The word ".development," as used in connection with mining, is a rather general term and in most instances must be qualified or explained before the exact thought in the mind of the user is made clear. For instance, by the development of a mining district is often meant its entire facilities of mineral production, such as railroads, towns, mine plants, etc. In speaking of the development of a property its prospecting by test pits or diamond drill borings may be referred to; or it may be the mines, strip pits or quarries from which the coal, ore or rock is won. Rut, as a rule, when the development of an individual mine is spoken of the idea in mind is the system of underground workings by means of which the mineral is recovered and transported to the surface. It is this character of development that is considered here. The discussion will be confined to the ordinary room-and-pillar system of mining practically horizontal coal seams that is used in most bituminous coal mines in this country, and to only two phases of this subject; viz., what is properly included under the head of "Development" as it appears on the books of a coal company or the inventories of an examining engineer, and how its " value " should be determined by the accountant or engineer. No absolute rule or definite agreement covers these points, yet these questions are far more than academic. Development is often an important part of a mining company's assets, affecting the amount of its invested capital (and hence its rate of taxation under present Federal income tax laws) as well as the value of its total assets and the amounts chargeable to cost of coal and to depreciation. Mine Development Account Perhaps the majority of mine accountants will agree that the mine development account is that capital account which shows the extraordinary expenditures incurred in opening and expanding the underground workings of a mine until it has reached its normal production, the expenditures being those made for shafts, slopes, rock tunnels, drift mouths and such relatively permanent work; also payments over and above ordinary mining costs made for driving entries, air courses and break-through; for

A ferroalloy is defined as: "An alloy of iron with some element other than carbon used as a vehicle for introducing such an element into the manufacture of steel. The element may alloy with the steel by solution or, as the carbide, -neutralize the harmful impurities, by combining with them and separating from the steel as flux or slag before solidification."a The most commonly used ferroalloys are: ferromanganese, ferrochrome, ferrosilicon, ferrovanadium, ferromolybdenum, ferronickel, ferrotungsten, ferrocolumbium, and ferrophosphorus. Concern here is with the sources and markets of the major metallic alloying elements. The discussion is further restricted to those - ferroalloy ores, the principal use of which is in the production of steel. Phosphorus, silicon, and tungsten, for example, are ferroalloys of some economic significance, but other uses dwarf their alloying applications. Thus, this discussion will deal with the ores of managanese, chromium, nickel, molybdenum, vanadium, and columbium. As shown in Table 14.1B.1 ferroalloys serve to- facilitate processing and impart to the finished steel such characteristics as tensile strength, ductility, low-temperature impact, hardenability, high-temperature strength, corrosion resistance, toughness, and abrasion resistance. In the steel-making process, ferroalloys may be added in the charge, in the molten bath near the end of the finishing period, in the ladle, or in the molds. Timing of the addition depends on the effect of the addition on the temperature of the molten metal, the formation and elimination of reaction products, and the protection of subsequent additions from oxidation. MANGANESE General Approximately 95% of the manganese ore sold is consumed by the steel industry, either as ferromanganese or as manganese metal. Manganese is the universal alloy, without which good steel cannot be made. It serves as a scavenger, removing phosphorus, sulfur and, to a degree, oxygen from the melt. As an alloying material it makes steel hard, tough, and resistant to wear. Approximately 6 kg of manganese is required for every ton of common steel produced by United States steelmaking practice. The remaining 5 % of the manganese ore consumed consists of special or so-called "chemical" ores, including high-grade pyrolusite ores, electrochemically reactive "battery ores," and a number of special varieties, as well as those otherwise regarded as "metallurgical ores."

This paper is based on the formula that the petroleum industry is sick—find the cause, eliminate it, and the industry will get well. There is perhaps no difference of opinion that the cause is overproduction, actual or potential. But that, again, is a result rather than a cause. The problem is to study the influences that serve to keep production and consumption out of balance. Production control is a popular theme and a natural one at this time when the whole world is unstable; but production control in its popular sense means little more than the application of emergency measures while danger threatens. Economists differ as to the effectiveness of these, most of which are designed to alleviate and not to cure, but we assume there are none who question the wisdom of promoting conditions under which economic forces are permitted to operate freely in bringing about stable conditions. The petroleum industry suffers from two classes of economic ills that serve to promote overproduction; namely, those which are common to all industries and those which are peculiar to this industry. It is of the latter I wish to speak. Strange to say, government is responsible in large part for this latter class of ills that affect the petroleum industry and we are coming to recognize that only through the assistance of government can they be corrected. Instability of the petroleunl industry, in so far as human agency was involved, had its inception in 1875 when a Pennsylvania jurist, called upon to make a decision for which there was no precedent and fancying he noted some resemblance between the so-called fugitive nature of oil and gas and that of wild game, made mention of that resemblance. Other courts being impressed by the analogy enlarged upon it, and gradually fixed upon oil and gas a legal status in certain important respects similar to that of wild game. Although later the courts abandoned this analogy, certain practices that developed out of that early concept have continued to this day and are largely responsible for the industry's present plight. The transfer of kinetic energy of translation into other forms of energy by impact is a fundamental process in most crushing and grinding operations. During and after the impact process the original source energy may be accounted for in any of the following possible forms: 1) Kinetic energy of translation of both the impacted and impacting objects. 2) Kinetic energy of vibration of the components of the impact system. 3) Potential energy as strain energy of the components of the system or in the form of residual stresses. 4) Heat generated by internal friction during plastic deformation or during damping of elastic waves. 5) New surface energy of fractured materials. At any instant during the impact process only the strain energy of the components of the system can contribute directly to the brittle fracture process. If fracture is the desired result, as in comminution, it would seem advantageous to choose or arrange the conditions of impact so that a maximum amount of the original kinetic energy could be converted to strain energy at some moment during a single impact. The present work deals with determination of these desirable conditions for a simple case of impact and application of the principles involved to general cases of impact.

A KNOWLEDGE of the fundamental principles of locating, sampling, testing and evaluating materials is essential in prospecting for mineral aggregates. In this discussion, mineral aggregates will be considered sand, gravel, crushed stone and slag that are used as materials of con-struction. The quantity of mineral aggregates produced in the United States during the year 1935 for such purposes was roughly 165,000,000 tons, about 60 per cent of which was sand and gravel, 37 per cent crushed stone and 3 per cent crushed slag. The total value of this material was approximately $100,000,000. It is apparent therefore that the prospect-ing for suitable mineral aggregates is of considerable economic importance. In prospecting for mineral aggregates, the methods employed are the same whether the organization is large or small. In the large organiza-tion there may be available geologists for locating sources of supply, a land acquisition department to arrange for the necessary options or permits, engineers to do the sampling, a laboratory for testing, and a board of consulting materials engineers to make the final selection. Even small organizations must follow the same general procedure, though the respon-sibility for the selection of aggregates may rest with one man, who may or may not be an engineer, but who must depend entirely upon his own judgment.

THE BEGINNING of a large enterprise is often as in- significant as a lump of leaven hidden in a bowl of meal or a handful of mustard seed that the wind blows across a field. In 1950 the company known today as the Phelps Dodge Corporation had nearly thirty-two thousand stockholders, paid salaries and wages of about fifty million dollars to some thirteen thousand persons, produced nearly four hundred and ninety million pounds of copper, and possessed net current assets of approximately one hundred and six million dollars. For the origin of this great business, one must go back approximately a hundred and fifty years to an obscure saddle-making shop in the small town of Hart- ford, Connecticut. Anson Greene Phelps, proprietor of the shop and master saddler in his own right, was born in 1781-the year of the Battle of Yorktown, the surrender of Cornwallis, and the close of the Revolutionary War Anson's forebears had come to America in the great Puritan migration that left fields, shops, pulpits, and hearthstones in the reign of Charles the First to transplant the strong, tough roots of their race, culture, and institutions in the New World.

Numerous laboratory tests and field measurements conducted by different persons have indicated that most mine rocks behave viscoelastically rather than elastically. Hence, for an accurate and realistic design of underground structure, the time factor should be taken into account, and the theory of viscoelasticity can be used. By considering the time factor, the time-safe-strength may be used for economical design instead of liberal safety factors with design based on the elasticity theory. The deflection and moment distributions on an elastic roof slab resting on elastic pillars have already been studied.l In this chapter, the stress- strain analysis for a viscoelastic mine roof resting on pillars of the same material or on supports of different material is first considered theoretically. Viscoelastic solutions for deflections, moments, and shears are de- rived from the elastic plate theory on the basis of the elastic-viscoelastic correspondence principle. The Laplace transformation technique is employed as the operational method in the mathematical treatment. The roof slab materials are represented by four different rheological models and four different loading histories are considered. The method of finite difference equations is employed for solving the partial differential equations, using FORTRAN programs to calculate roof deflections, moments, and shears. Numerical examples are given for one of the four models under two of the four loading histories with regular and staggered pillar patterns. The results are discussed in terms of the variance with time of deflections, moments, and shears as well as their variation in space due to the dimensions and configuration of the structure system. INTRODUCTION FEW mineral deposits have in recent years attracted such general and Widespread attention as the Brazilian iron-ore deposits, due mainly to the quantities of rich ore occurring here, in contrast to the ever-decreasing grade of ores shipped from many large producing iron-ore districts of the world. The general average grade of the iron ores shipped from the Lake Superior district' has decreased to approximately 50 per cent., natural, in recent years. The Rubio ore of Bilbao, Spain,2 in 1890 averaged 55.5 per cent. metallic iron, dried; in 1902, 52.8 per cent., While at the present time a large proportion of the ores shipped from Bilbao are obtained by reworking the old dumps. In northern Sweden, where large magnetite deposits have only in recent years been extensively developed, selective mining is even now necessary in order to obtain high-grade Bessemer ores. During the last two years the iron ores of Chile have attracted much attention on account of the activities of the Bethlehem Steel Co. and others in the Chilean iron-ore region. Many of these ores are of good grade, yielding 67 and even 68 per cent. metallic iron, but judging from the Writer's observations in this region a large proportion of them Will be found to he of non-Bessemer grade. The most important variety of iron ore in Brazil is hard, dense to specular hematite, occurring in Minas Geraes. INTRODUCTION Numerous deposits of lead and zinc sulfides, often accompanied by barite and fluorite, occur in carbonate host rocks throughout central and eastern United States. So similar are the deposits in broad general characteristics that they long have been classified as Mississippi Valley type. They differ widely, however, in details such as metal ratios, age of host rock, type of ore-bearing structure, and probable time of mineralization. The theories developed to explain the source and transport of the metals are many and are known to all. The deposits have been termed telethermal on the basis of their presumably shallow occurrence and the attempt to relate the metals to the classic hydro- thermal sequence. 1t is now recognized that deposits of this type can occur at any depth; the only depth limitation is thickness of the sedimentary section. Ideas on the source of the metals also have changed, A rapidly growing body of evidence suggests that the metals were brought by concentrated brines from nearby sedimentary basins. The hypothesis preferred today by many geologists postulates that the metals were deposited during the course of normal sedimentation in depositional basins of miogeosynclinal or orthogeosynclinal type. At some time after deposition of the sediments, the metals were carried out of the basins by migrating brines; the brines moved laterally and upward into structurally high areas; they entered any reservoir-like structure, either primary or secondary in origin, that happened to be available; in this reservoir, possibly in a sulfur-rich environment, the metals were precipitated as ore minerals.

The original power-plant of the Standard Company has been described* by Mr. T. H. Leggett, late president and manager of the company; but since the presentation of his paper considerable additions have been made, which will be found interesting because of the engineering features involved and of the attainment of a high degree of flexibility with the inflexible, two-wire, alternating system of electrical transmission. Although these additions have been completed during the last year, they constitute, to a large extent, only the carrying out of plans that belonged to the original conception of the installation. The regular operation of the water-power through the winter proved very difficult; there was a considerable length of ditch to be kept open, and, as the stream is small and any freezing night may stop the whole flow of water, there was the .additional trouble of having no reserve to draw upon. The rule for the winter is, that after a night of hard frost water begins to move in the canon before noon on all but the coldest days. To obviate the nuisance of the anchor-ice, and to make available all of the water, a dam of sufficient height to impound several days' run of water has been built across the canon, 3875 feet above the power-house, and provided with pressurepipe well below the surface. In place of the 1571 feet of pipeline from penstock to power-house, there has been substituted a line 3875 feet long to bring water direct from the dam. The dam is of logs, cribbed up in squares of about 12 feet, ballasted with earth and rock and sheathed on the water-face with 3-inch plank.

In searching for an explanation for the obvious difference between the copper and the brass type of rolling texture, it is common practice to look for correlations with other properties. For example, there are obvious differences between copper and brass in the critical resolved shear stress, the extent of easy glide or stage I, and the amount of "overshooting)) during single-crystal deformation.' Also, the slip lines in copper are fine and wavy while those in brass are more coarse and better described as slip bands.' Since neutron irradiation is known to make these properties in copper change in such a way as to resemble brass,2'3 an excellent test for these possible correlations is to see whether neutron irradiation produces a corresponding change in the texture, i.e., whether irradiated copper develops a brass-type rolling texture. The experiment would also answer the more important question of whether or not lattice defects like those introduced by neutron irradiation have any effect on the development of rolling textures in fcc metals. Experimental studies using conventional X-ray pole figure techniques are inconvenient because the X-ray detection system must be modified to discriminate against the radioactivity which is induced in the specimen by the necessarily long exposure to neutrons. THE gas-lift method of flowing oil from wells is the outstanding feature of petroleum technology today. Its forerunner, the air lift, was used successfully first, in the Baku fields of Russia, in 1899, and later in the Gulf Coast fields of Texas and Louisiana and the Kern River field of California. It is still used to a limited extent in certain oil fields. The use of compressed natural gas for lifting oil from wells has supplanted the air-lift method in a measure in those fields where a sufficient quantity of gas accompanies the oil to make the gas lift possible, or where natural gas is plentiful and inexpensive. We find therefore in California, that, natural gas is used at practically every well where a gaseous medium is employed to flow the oil. The use of natural gas has many advantages over that of air. It is possible to recover and save the gasoline from the gas that accompanied the oil to the surface. This gasoline would be wasted if air were used as the lifting medium. Also, certain proportions of air and gas form an explosive mixture that cannot be handled safely by compressors. Another advantage that gas has over air is that gas under pressure is more soluble in oil. Gas in solution in oil reduces the viscosity of the oil that is being produced and causes it to flow more readily through the. tubing and flow lines. The gas lift has made it possible to recover many thousands of barrels of oil from deep wells in California that could not have been produced otherwise. It would not have been economical, had it been mechanically possible to produce such wells as the world's deepest producing oil well (Miley Athen's No. 6, Rosecranz field, California) by any other method of pumping known today. At this well, production is obtained from between 7305 and 7591 ft. and 11 months after completion of the well, production was being maintained on the gas lift it approximately 2000 bbl. a month. The crookedness of the hole, or its diameter and depth will not prevent the successful application of gas-lift pumping when other conditions are favorable.

Based on metallographic and X-ray data probable equilibrium conditions from 1340" to 2400°F are presented for the composition range investigated. These are correlated with investigations of Takei and Kuo. Provision is made for existence of Mo, C and (Fe, Mo)2,C, carbides heretofore omitted in diagrams in this composition range. These carbides and (Fe, Mo),C, in equilibrium with ferrite and austenite, restrict the austenite and austenite + ferrite fields to lower carbon contents and higher temperatures than in the Fe-C system. OK groups of steel of different molybdenum content, but with approximately the same carbon variation in each group, Table I, were studied. The alloys were melted in an acid-lined 30-lb high-frequency induction furnace, and the ingots forged to l-in. rounds, which were then ground to 0.75-in. diam. To minimize chemical segregations a short length of each bar was given a high-temperature heat treatment as listed in Table I. Specimens 0.062 to 0.125-in. thick were thereafter cut from the homogenized bars for heat treatment to determine phase changes in the alloy. Heat treatments were performed in either a lead bath or muffle-type electric furnace, depending upon the temperature required. Maximum temperature variation was * 2" F in the lead bath and * 5"F up to 1900°F and +8"F above 1900°F in the electric furnace. Adequate protection of the specimen from the oxidizing atmosphere in the electric furnace was obtained by sealing the specimen in either a pyrex or a silica capsule which was evacuated or not as circumstances required. For austenitizing followed by quenching to an isothermal temperature, the specimen was placed in a closed-end refractory tube the mouth of which, extending beyond the furnace, was connected to a vacuum pump. The specimen could be withdrawn from this tube and quenched as desired. IDENTIFICATION OF PHASES The principal method of identification of phases was metallographic examination conducted on surfaces well removed from exposure to lead or atmosphere effects during heat treatment. Hardness measurements (Dph/lOkg) were also made on these surfaces. The etching reagents used and their effects are listed in Table II. Martensite and ferrite were readily recognized by their customary appearance after etching with saturated picral or 1 pct nital. The presence of liquid at high temperature was indicated by curved interfaces characteristic of boundaries between solid and melt, by intergranular pools of dendritic areas in a carbide matrix, and by a black network coincident with austenite grain boundaries. Examples of these structures are shown in Figs. l(a) and (0). The types of carbide which were attacked by the electrolytic chromic acid etch and the alkaline KMnO, etch, Table 11, were identified by X-ray analyses of extracted carbides of five alloys. Carbide residue was obtained from a metallographic specimen by etching the specimen for 24 hr in hydrochloric-picric acid in alcohol (grain-size reagent), after which the carbides, standing in relief, were scraped from the surface of the specimen and mounted on a glass slide. Diffraction patterns were obtained with a Philips spectrometer using iron-filtered cobalt radiation. Figs. 2, 3, 4, and 5 illustrate typical etching behaviors with chromic acid and alkaline KMnO,. Chromic acid attacked Mo,C as shown in Figs. 2(a) and (b)-but not (Fe, Mo),C, Fig. 3(b). Alkaline KMnO, attacked (Fe, Mo),C, Fig. 3(c), and also attacked M0,C. In accordance with these behaviors, a typical differentiation of coexisting Mo,C and (Fe, Mo),~ is shown in Figs. 4(a) and (b). The carbide (Fe, Mo),,C, could not be obtained free of other coexisting carbides for etching experiments. Plans to bring the Geco Mines property in Manitouwadge, Ont., into production began in 1954. At that time over 12 million tons of copper-zinc ore were indicated in a zone 2700 ft long. A concentrating plant was built to handle 3300 tpd of ore and a production shaft was sunk about 1500 ft. MINE LAYOUT Vertical attitude, width, rake, and competent country rock of a 4-million ton orebody west of the main diabase dike suggested a system of blasthole stopes, undercut with scram drifts connected by a transfer raise system to a crusher on the 1250-ft level and this system was employed. A 42-in. conveyor on this level transfers the ore about 1200 ft to a loading pocket at the No. 1 shaft. The system has a number of advantages: 1) Cost of tramming is eliminated. 2) Rate of extraction from any stope is controlled only by the scraping capacity of the scram. 3) Rate of extraction from the stoping area can be very rapid. Fast extraction makes it possible to cut mining costs for the following reasons: The number of stopes actively producing is kept to an economical minimum; the operating area is concentrated-manpower can be used more effectively; and active life of the stoping block is short, making ground support problems simpler and less costly.

Commercially, celestite (SrSO,) is the only significant strontium mineral. Among other strontium-bearing minerals, only strontianite (SrCO,) occurs commonly; however, it is not an item of commerce. The principal production of celestite is in England, Mexico, and Spain. New production is now coming on stream in Canada. Consumption is mainly in the United States. Lesser quantities are consumed in Japan and Europe. Main uses are for the manufacture of strontium carbonate and nitrate. The carbonate is used in glass for TV tube face plates and in ferrites for magnets. The nitrate is used in pyrotechnics to which it imparts a characteristic brilliant red color, mainly in safety flares. Minor amounts of strontium compounds are used in electrolytic zinc manufacturing and very small quantities in greases, ceramics, soaps, alloys, and pharmaceuticals. Specifications and Prices Typical celestite specifications for the carbonate and nitrate markets are as follows: [ ] Celestite currently shipped from Mexico for carbonate manufacture tends to be slightly better than these industry specifications, assaying about 92-93% SrSO, with less than 1% BaSO, but it is generally below the 95% minimum required for nitrate production. Contract prices for celestite are approximately $32-34 per st at U.S. Port of Entry in 50 to 60-ton carload lots for Mexican material. Spot prices are generally reported as low as $20 per st but are for minor volumes. A recent sale of surplus from the U.S. stockpiles, announced by the General Service Administration (GSA), was 4005 st sold to Du Pont for $140- 455 or $35.07 per st. British celestite, ground, washed, and graded, 95% SrSO, bulk, ex- works, 240 mesh, is quoted at £ 28.75 per mt in British trade journals, and a recent figure quoted for crushed lump material was $36.00 per st f.0.b. vessel Bristol Channel port (1973). Specifications of manufactured carbonate made from celestite and sold in two grades, one to the glass industry, the other to the electronic industry for ferrites, are given in [Table 1]

THE problem of strata control has of necessity been prominent in mining, and accounts of individual experience and research abound in the literature of most mining countries. Organized research began in Britain by the formation of a committee, upon the recommendation of the Safety in Mines Research Board in 1923, to investigate methods of reducing accidents from falls of roof in coal mines. This committee examined current practice in supporting underground workings in the principal coal fields, and its findings have been published in the Board's publications. Toward the end of these investigations it was suggested by the Chief Inspector of Mines that committees of the several mining institutes be formed to examine the problem in their respective districts. The formation of these committees marked a new phase in research on strata control. The work, though being done in the separate coal fields, followed a scheme outlined by the Chief Mining Engineer of the Research Board, and was coordi¬nated by his office. FACTORS INVOLVED The subject is being considered in Britain from two aspects: I. To provide, by supports, means to prevent falls of fractured ground. 2. To develop methods whereby the strata can be maintained in the least broken condition and thus make falls less likely. The first aspect is the one that will most likely lead to immediate results from the accident standpoint. It depends largely upon the assimilation of already acquired knowledge regarding the proper¬ties of supports and their correct applica¬tion. The second aspect is perhaps more fundamental, and involves also the proper¬ties of the strata and their behavior under the influence of the forces induced by mining. The problem involves many natural factors that cannot be controlled, such as depth, inclination and thickness of seam and nature of the rocks. Other factors, which may be considered to a certain extent controllable, cannot be varied readily and with sufficient fre¬quency to facilitate easy investigation; some of these are: rate of advance of the working face, length of face, direction of the face with regard to cleat and inclination, system and arrangements of rock packing behind longwall faces. In any given case the very many factors present have a mutual influence upon the effects produced in the mine. For example, a study of the effects of rate of advance cannot be done without considering the effects of other factors such as nature of strata, direction of face and quality and arrangement of supports.
