In examination of some cold-rolled copper and cupronickel that contained a little columbium, it was discovered that these alloys were unusually resistant to annealing. This effect was suficiently pronounced to warrant some investigation of the annealing characteristics of such compositions. Experimental Procedure The alloys were made from cathode copper, electrolytic nickel, and a special copper-columbium hardener alloy furnished by the Electro Metallurgical Corporation. This hardener alloy contained 10 per cent columbium, with tantalum, aluminum and iron as major impurities. The melting was carried out in a clay-graphite crucible in a high-frequency induction furnace! under a charcoal or electrode carbon cover. No deoxidizing additions were made. The 7-lb. copper heats were poured into a steel mold, hot-rolled to 1/4-in. thickness, and annealed for 56 hr. at 760°C.; the cupronickels were annealed I hr. at 815°C. The material was then cold-rolled to a 50 per cent reduction in thickness and annealing tests were carried out on this 1/8-in. hard-rolled strip. The company attempting to sell coal to large utility plants is faced with a confusing array of quality parameters and specifications which are often poorly understood by both the utility company and coal supplier. While these specifications are placed on the coal by the utility company, many of them originate with the boiler manufacturer who must guarantee that his product will perform satisfactorily on the design coal. A proper understanding of these parameters by both the coal supplier and utility company can lead to a better understanding of their mutual problem. This paper brings together most of the parameters in common use today and attempts to show what the parameters mean to the boiler designer, particularly in the area of boiler slagging and fouling.

The pits, which are assumed to be associated with dislocations, appear individually and as arrays delineating sub-boundaries, as seen in Fig. 1. THE formation of intermediate phases in the solid state reaction of titanium with silicon, germanium. and tin (of subgroup 4B in the periodic table) was the subject of a recent paper.' Further investigation of the system Ti-Sn revealed the presence of a new compound on the titanium-rich side of this phase diagram. Metallographic evidence indicated that this new phase was situated very close to 75 atomic pct Ti. The present work is concerned with the crystal structure of the intermediate phase Ti3Sn. Iodide-process titanium metal, furnished by the New Jersey Zinc Co., was used in this investigation. The metallic tin was received in powder form from Charles Hardy Inc., New York; its purity was 99.80 pct. The titanium rod was machined into small cups 1 cm in diam and about 1.5 cm in height. The tin powder was compacted, melted, and then placed in the titanium cups and alloyed by electric arc melting in a helium atmosphere. The alloys, weighing approximately 8 g, were sealed in evacuated quartz tubes and homogenized at 1030°C for 5 days. This isothermal heat treatment was terminated by a water quench from the soaking temperature. Filings of the alloyed pellets were sealed in evacuated quartz bulbs and quenched from 1030°C into liquid argon. A 14.32 cm Debye Scherrer X-ray camera was used for the powder diffraction study. The copper radiation was filtered. X-ray diffraction data for the compound Ti3Sn are given in Table I. The data were indexed on the basis of a hexagonal lattice. Good agreement between observed and calculated values of the square of the reciprocal interplanar spacings was obtained with the following expression: (1/d)2 = 0.03810 (h2 + hk + k2) + 0.04410 (l2) Unit cell parameters were calculated by the method of least squares from the reflections (20.3), (22.2), (40.1), and (42.1); ao = 5.916 & 0.004A, co = 4.764 ± 0.004A, and co/ao = 0.805. The relatively small size of the unit cell allowed the unambiguous indexing of most of the reflections from planes of large spacing. An inspection of the assigned indices (Table I) reveals the absence of (hk.l) reflections when 1 2n. A systematic absence of this type leads to the space group C 6/mmc or one of its subgroups. Assuming, for a first approximation, a linear increase in the density of titanium with the addition of tin, it follows that there are two stoichiometric molecules of Ti3Sn per unit cell. The density calculated from X-ray measurements is 5.194 g cm-'. At this point it became clear that Ti3Sn might be isomorphous with Mg3Cd. The 6 Ti and 2 Sn atoms were placed in the following positions of space group D4 6h, C 6/mmc: 6Tiin (h): X 2X 1/4; 22;; 1/4;Xx 1/4;x2x3/4; 2x x 3/4; x x 4; with x = 516 2 Sn in (c): 1/3 2/3 1/4; 2/3 1/3 3/4.

ZnxHg1-xTe and GUPxAS1-x crystals have been grown from solution by a traveling heater method (THM). In a floating zone type fashion a solution zone sandwich of liquidus composition is made to migrate through feed material of solidus composition by a slow-speed movement of <0.25 mm per hr of the total charge through a stationary radiation or rf heater. ZnxHg1-xTe of composition 0 < x < 0.3 and GUPxAS1-x of composition 0.5 < x < 0.7 have thus been grown from their solution in liquid tellurium and gallium, respectively. A simplified analysis of heat and material transport is given. In this method, Proper adjustment of the temperature distribution along the liquid solution zone axis eliminates instability of the crystal growth front and constitutional supercooling. 1) ZnxHg1—xTe: The solid-solution telluride was grown in sealed quartz tubes at a temperature of 500 to 650°C. For first Preparations mechanical mixtures SINGLE crystals of solid solutions of III-V and II-VI compounds have been grown by various techniques from the melt, from the gaseous phase, or from solutions in of ZnTe and HgTe were used. X-ray determinations showed the resulting crystals to be homogeneous throughout their entire length, except for the end sections. The homogeneity is greatly improved by reusing the ingots obtained from first Preparations as feed material in subsequent crystal growth runs. Ingots of up to 4.5 cm have thus been obtained. 2) GaPxAs1-x: Crystals were grown in a EN crucible at a temperature of 1050°C. For first Preparation a mechanical mixture of Gap and GaAs was cemented together by a minimum amount of liquid gallium through "wet" grinding of Gap and GaAs crystals in the liquid metal and subsequent exuding of excess gallium by compacting of the charge in the EN crucible. Electron microprobe measurements using P-Ka and As-Ka radiation showed uniformity over a length of 0.4 cm. Properties of the various Preparations are described. liquid metals.&apos;-&apos; Their growth from the melt by passing a liquid zone of pseudobinary liquidus composition through a solid rod of solidus composition is generally a convenient method of growth of single crystals of solid solutions of homogeneous composition. THE primary recrystallization texture in cold-rolled silicon iron, which is the matrix texture for developing the Goss texture or the cube-on-edge texture by secondary recrystallization at temperatures near 900°C,1-5,21 has not been adequately described. Thus from the present available information, it is not possible to explain satisfactorily both the grain-growth selectivity of the matrix and the often observed magnetic torque curve, which itself provides some information on the texture. Also lacking is information on the special annealing texture that develops in this material when the annealing temperature is 1200°C or higher and the rate of rise to temperature is extremely rapid. From the work of May and Turnbull5 and from unpublished work, it was known that isothermal annealing near 1200°C tends to reduce the extent of secondary recrystallization and that a much weaker cube-on-edge texture results if appreciable normal grain growth replaces secondary recrystallization. Koh and Dunn6,7 have obtained additional information on complex primary recrystallization textures from further studies made after normal grain growth. In these instances the initial textures were retained during normal grain growth. A similar result reasonably could be expected in the present study except for the presence of a grain growth ihibitor1-5,8,9.21 and its tendency to allow only a few grains to grow. However, any information on the orientations of grains in the special annealing texture, even if far from representative of the initial matrix texture, would provide useful information on the nature of the matrix texture. In the present texture study the method of Newkirk and Bruce,10 which is based on the methods of Geisler" and Schwartz, 12 is used to obtain a complete (110) pole figure of the primary recrystallization texture. The high-temperature annealing texture is determined simply from the orientations of a large number of selected grains. The kinetic nature of the process that produces the annealing texture is treated elsewhere13 and it is shown that a form of secondary recrystallization with a very high rate of nucleation occurs during rapid annealing at high temperatures. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Commercial 0.014-in. cold-rolled silicon iron strip (3.16 wt pct Si), prepared by two stages of cold rolling with an intermediate short anneal, was given a decarburizing 3-min anneal at 800°C. Me-tallographic studies indicated complete recrystallization. Short-time anneals at 900° C and at higher temperatures proved that secondary recrystallization had not begun at 800°C, in fact, the short additional anneals were still in the induction period of secondary recrystallization. A rapid rise to an annealing temperature of 1260°C (2300°F) was obtained in a BaC12and NaCl fused salt bath. The structures that resulted from anneals in the range 12- to 1000-sec duration were relatively finegrained, even though the growth was a form of exaggerated grain growth13 or secondary recrystallization with a high nucleation frequency.= Many of the grains were large enough for an X-ray study using a 5-mil X-ray beam. A transmission Laue Camera and an optical-mechanical stage for moving the grains into the X-ray beam were used. A total of 325 grains were X-rayed in this manner and the grain orientations determined. Complete (110) pole figures were obtained for the primary recrystallization texture using CoKa radiation at 30 kv in the back-reflection range, such as (220) for (110) poles, as described recently by Newkirk and Bruce.10 The low voltage serves to reduce the spurious white radiation to a minimum. A filter of 0.001-inch iron foil was located in front of the detector slit for transmission and in front of the beam slit for back reflection. A new and improved specimen holder extended the useful tilting angle range for transmission to 70 deg instead of 60 deg as previously reported.&apos; A torque magnetometer was used to obtain the magnetic torque curves for a number of l-in. diam disk specimens. With only one certain exception coal was never used by the Indians, before white men came to America, for any purpose except as an ornament or for paint. Within the past few years it has been discovered that the Hopi Indians in Navajo County, Arizona, used lignite for burning pottery, about 1000 A. D., as dated by tree rings. They were able to obtain a clear color in their ware that could not be obtained with brushwood fires. The coal was mined by hammers from outcrop openings, some of which can still be seen, and the tools used have been found in them.1 (See also p. 376.) Small figurines made of splint or cannel coal have been found at various localities in western New York, in Ohio and possibly other places, evidently made for ornaments. There is no reason to think they are of any greater age, if as old, as that mentioned above. Some crushed coal was used by the Indians as a black pigment in painting themselves, but apparently the eastern Indians never used coal for any other purposes. Some think that several tribes of Indians in the Northwest, along the Missouri, used coal as fuel, the basis being a statement attributed to Radisson about 1660. In the Jesuit Relations of 1659-1660 it was stated that Radisson anti Groseilliers had just returned from a visit to Lake Superior and beyond. "In the country of the Poualak, which means &apos;warriors&apos; they say `as wood is scanty in supply and small in size in their country, nature has taught them to make fire with coal from the earth (charbon de terre) and to cover their cabins with skins.&apos;"2 This statement was only hearsay with the good fathers, and the reputation for veracity of the two explorers is not of the best, and it is extremely probable that instead of coal they used turf, dry grass or buffalo chips. In fact in Radisson&apos;s Voyages&apos; he does not mention coal at all in his account of the third voyage, when he was supposed to have seen it used. His accounts of his travels are badly mixed, and he and his companions were much better travellers than narrators. None of the early travellers up the Missouri River saw any evidence even then that the Indians were familiar with the use of coal. In the writer&apos;s opinion it is unlikely that coal was used as stated by the Jesuits.

The subject article appears in the February, 1978, edition of Mining Engineering, and on page 190 carries the statement, "As most operators know, in a Water-Only cyclone, ability to adjust the vortex finder is quite important due to the sensitivity of this type of operations to variance in feed conditions and having to take them apart to make this adjustment is always a nuisance." Our experience as a manufacturer and supplier of Water Only cyclones does not agree with the above statement, and we offer the following brief discussion. Our company finds that the sensitivity of the Water-Only cyclone is a function of the fineness of the coal being washed, with the sensitivity to vortex finder length being greatest for coals coarser than 3/4-in. and virtually insensitive to raw coal finer than 1 mm. For coals finer than 1 mm, we find that we can use the shortest standard vortex finder in either our 10- or 15- in. Water Only cyclone without exception. For coals 5/8-in. x 1 mm ceramic vortex finders of fixed length have been satisfactory in all cases following an initial testing period in which the length was determined. Coals coarser that 5/8-in. are more sensitive to the vortex finder length, and two installations handling coals coarser than 1-in. continued to experiment with vortex finders of various lengths long after the initial startup period. For coals of all sizes, final adjustment of product quality has been achieved by determining the optimum size of apex orifice, which is accessible and readily changed, if necessary. Comments above assume no unusual change in the coal being washed or the required quality of clean coal.

MOTT and Hainesl have summarized the available techniques for the examination of aluminum and some anisotropic metals under polarized light. Many of these techniques are rather complicated and cumbersome. This note presents a simplified procedure for using polarized light to obtain information about the crystallographic orientation of any particular grain in a magnesium alloy. Since other hexagonal metals are more anisotropic than magnesium, similar methods might well be applied to them. Ernst and Laves2 produced a double-refracting layer on magnesium alloy specimens by SuCCeSSiVe etches in solutions of perchloric acid in alcohol, magnesium perchlorate in perchloric acid and alcohol, and calcium and magnesium carbonates in water. They examined their specimens under polarized light and were able to determine the direction of the hexagonal axis in any particular grain from a measurement of the extinction behavior of that grain. The disadvantages of their technique were the complexity of the etching procedure and the explosive hazard of the perchloric acid-alcohol solutions. Results equivalent to those of Ernst and Laves were obtained in this investigation after etching specimens for 6 to 8 sec in an acetic picral solution containing 100 parts 6 pct picral, 10 parts distilled water and. 5 parts acetic acid. The iron ores of Canada have attracted more or less attention in this country for a number of years ; and having had an opportunity this past summer to examine some of them, especially the magnetic ores, I have thought it might be of sufficient interest to the members of the Institute to put on record some of my observations. The region examined contains, for the most part, only the rocks of the Laurentian system. Much of it was originally covered with a dense growth of pine, which interfered with successful prospecting for ores. However, after the best of the timber had been cut off, fire generally got into the bush and cleared it up pretty well. This, besides making travelling about easier, exposed large surfaces of rock, and rendered the work of the prospector far more liable to be rewarded with success, while removing many of its hardships. The general appearance and productiveness of the land have, however, been far from improved by this process. It would be difficult to find a more desolate-appearing country than some of these pine woods after fire has been through them. The country examined may be, for convenience, divided into two

Among the various studies made by the Coal Fact Finding Commission, appointed by President Warren G. Harding in 1922 to investigate all phases of the coal-mining industry in the United States and to report to Congress, was one concerning the amount and nature of losses in mining bituminous coal in the eastern part of the United States. This study was carried on under the direction of the U. S. Bureau of Mines. The writer was appointed field engineer to investigate the problem in Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Some 400 mines were studied in these three states and conclusions were drawn from many sources of data. The summary report written by George S. Rice and J. W. Paul states that "the field reports indicate that the recovery in Ohio will remain about as at present, except in the Belmont district; whereas in Pennsylvania it will gradually improve, and in West Virginia it will improve rapidly." Since 1922, the writer has been interested in gathering material to substantiate or contradict these prophecies. Nature of Coal Losses There are six general causes of losses of coal in mining: (1) coal left on the roof and bottom; (2) coal lost in room, entry and panel pillars; (3) coal lost in oil-well or gas-well pillars; (4) coal lost under buildings, railroads and boundaries; (5) coal lost in handling and prepayation, underground and surface; (6) coal lost by rolls, thin or dirty areas and under streams. Local economic aspects that dominate the type of mining conditions determine to some extent whether certain losses are avoidable or unavoidable. In general, however, unavoidable losses include coal lost in the protection of buildings, streams, railroads, restricted properties and around oil and gas wells. Barrier pillars and other safety pillars are unavoidable losses as long as their size does not exceed the minimum for adequate safety. Natural physical conditions beyond human control, such as rock faults, clay veins, partings and binders, bad top and bottom, rolls and horsebacks, cause unavoidable losses. Unavoidable losses

IN the sections, Figures 1, 2, and 3, are shown three crucibles that have been applied to substantially the same furnace, all the conditions having been the same except a variation of one foot of bosh, and a slight variation in the angle of the same. The bosh of No. 3 was originally the same as No. 2, the additional foot in diameter being the result of three months&apos; cutting. THE Cassidy Colliery operated by the Granby Consolidated Mining, Smelting & Power Co., Ltd., is situated about 9 miles in a southerly direction from the city of Nanaimo on Vancouver Island. The coal seam worked, which is called the Douglas bed, outcrops in the western part of the property, clipping easteyrl, and is opened by a slope 7 by 14 ft. in the clear, and is timbered by 12 to 14-in. framed sets of timber, 4 ft. center to center. A separate manway provides for a traveling road and at the same time forms an intake airway. The general average of the dip of the seam at Cassidy is 18°, and varies in thickness from 1 to 25 ft., averaging about 8 ft. The main slopes follow straight down the dip a distance of 4545 ft. At the bottom of the main slope two rock tunnels were driven a distance of 1500 ft. to the south, cutting through a fault, and opening up an area in the same seam which is known as No. 7 South Section. The coal is found in this section at a vertical depth of 1560 ft., and is very soft and friable. The immediate roof is a strong, sandy shale overlain by massive sandstone while the floor is a light-colored shale, hard when freshly exposed. It does not soften materially oil exposure. In the folding of the coal measures a great thrust caused a movement along the coal seam as indicated by the slickensided nature of the coal. The floor has buckled and this has rolled and squeezed the coal-so that with rare exceptions it shows no normal bedding but curved slip planes, which frequently start at right angles to the floor, curving upward and then in the direction of the dip. As such planes are slickensided it is probable that there is a coating of clay which is more or less impervious to gas.

The relation between gases and metals has been a subject of increasingly active investigation during the past years, principally devoted to the study of metal-hydrogen systems. It has been found that hydrogen is soluble in most molten metals to an appreciable extent and somewhat soluble in most solid metals.l,2 In every known case there is a sudden decrease in solubility at the melting point. Thus a freezing mass of metal containing hydrogen in excess of the solid solubility must in some way expel that excess during the freezing process. This leads to internal blowholes, and such effects as pinhole porosity. Gas trapped in metal that is to be fabricated by a working process such as extrusion or rolling may be the cause of blisters. For some cases, notably in copper and iron alloys, the presence of hydrogen can lead to extreme embrittle-ment of the metal. The aluminum-casting industry has long recognized the importance of hydrogen in its techniques. Excess gas in molten aluminum alloys often leads to the formation of "pinhole porosity" in the solid casting.= To prevent this hydrogen pickup it is necessary to avoid overheating the melt and to protect it from such sources of hydrogen as water. In spite of all precautions, it is sometimes necessary to extract hydrogen from the melt just before pouring by bubbling with a gas such as chlorine or nitrogen. Reccntly it has been found that somewhat similar effects are possible with magnesium alloys, in that the presence of hydrogen can induce or aggravate micro-p~rosity.4-6 This paper is primarily concerned with a presentation of some facts concerning the solubility of hydrogen in magnesium and its alloys, with some discussion of the significance of these facts in a practical sense. In any study of gas-metal systems it is important to bear in mind a clear distinction between adsorption on surfaces and absorption within the lattice.&apos; Considerable attention has been directed toward determining whether hydrogen is truly soluble in any solid metal, or whether the gas extracted from a sample was present at surfaces (external and internal) only.7 Most present day evidence supports the idea of true solution in addition to adsorption. A second important factor when dealing with gas solubility is the dependence of such solubility on external pressure. For diatomic gases such as H², solubility in both liquid and solid metals apparently is proportional to the square root of the pressure, indicating a breakdown to a monatomic gas before diffusion into the lattice.= For true equilibrium values of solubility, therefore, the pressure at the the surface must be constant and, preferably, known. In any study of gas-metal systems it is important to bear in mind a clear distinction between adsorption on surfaces and absorption within the lattice.&apos; Considerable attention has been directed toward determining whether hydrogen is truly soluble in any solid metal, or whether the gas extracted from a sample was present at surfaces (external and internal) only.7 Most present day evidence supports the idea of true solution in addition to adsorption. A second important factor when dealing with gas solubility is the dependence of such solubility on external pressure. For diatomic gases such as H², solubility in both liquid and solid metals apparently is proportional to the square root of the pressure, indicating a breakdown to a monatomic gas before diffusion into the lattice.= For true equilibrium values of solubility, therefore, the pressure at the the surface must be constant and, preferably, known. CAREFUL- sampling and good judgment as to probable recoveries are important factors in estimates of ore reserves, based on prospecting drilling results, but other factors are equally as important and may be more misleading and perhaps disastrous if not properly interpreted. Some of these are: 1. The case where no, ore is shown in the "sludgings," when, as a matter of fact, the drill has passed through a thick sheet of ore which has been broken up and washed away into open crevices. In numerous cases, later mining operations have shown that this has happened. This condition may be discovered by shooting the drill .hole at the point where the open crevices occur, but shooting should not be done until after the drill hole is completed, because the resulting shattered formation may salt the drill hole at lower levels. 2. The case where rich cuttings are shown for a thickness of 20 or 30 ft., when ore was encountered in only the first sludging. Owing to soft or loose formation, the ore from the first sludging has salted the lower sludgings. The presence of large pieces of ore and a similar ratio between zinc and iron assays in the lower sludgings frequently indicate this condition. In the lower sludgings, the presence of oxidized ore in unaltered limestone sometimes shows this condition. 3. The case where the drill hole shows a considerable thickness of ore; but owing to the presence of a vertical sheet of ore, perhaps not more than 1 in. thick, at the place where the drill hole is located, the good assays resulting might be misleading. If this condition is suspected, the drilling of several more holes within a distance of 10 or 15, ft. will usually show it.

A formulation is Presented and solutions are given for the problem of transient heat conduction in a sphere that undergoes a spatially uniform radiative heat exchange with its environment. The solutions were obtained by the numerical integration of the appropriate Partial differential equation and are Presented in a graphical form by Plotting a dimensionless average temperature against the Fourier number with the radiation number as a paranreter, for various initial sphere and environment temperatures. In addition to these numerical results asymptotic analytical solutions are also given. PROBLEMS involving the transient heating or cooling of droplets and particles frequently arise and are of importance in metallurgical operations. Spray refining, vacuum degassing, high-temperature gas-solid reaction systems, and pebble heaters are but few of the numerous examples that may be quoted. The practical interest in these problems from a design or operational point of view is to evaluate the change in the particle temperature with the time given its physical properties, initial temperature, and that of the environment. At the high temperatures encountered the principal mode of heat transfer between the particles and their environment is by thermal radiation; in case of vacuum degassing due to the very low thermal conductivity of the gas space the convec-tive components are negligible and radiation is the only heat transfer mechanism. Although much work has been done on transient heat conduction problems, the special class mentioned here, in which thermal radiation is specified at the bounding surface, received little attention to date. One contributory factor to this situation may be the nonlinearity of the radiation term in temperature, which in general precludes the use of analytical techniques and requires numerical or analog solution of the appropriate differential equations. In fact the only solutions of general nature that are available at present pertain to semi-infinite media and slabs.&apos;-3 The work on which the paper reports forms part of a program aimed at the theoretical and experimental study of transient radiative heat exchange between particles and their environment. The purpose of the present paper is to develop a formulation and solutions to the problem of transient heat conduction in a sphere that undergoes a spatially uniform radiative heat exchange with its surroundings. The solutions, obtained by the numerical integration of the appropriate differential equations, will be presented graphically, by plotting dimensionless parame- ters covering the range of variables relevant to metallurgical interests, thus affording a ready reference for design calculations. In addition to these results, approximate analytical solutions are also given which represent asymptotes, corresponding to extreme values of the variables mentioned. FORMULATION Consider a spherical particle of radius, a, initially at uniform temperature, Ti (T measured on the absolute scale), having a thermal conductivity, k, density, , specific heat, C, and thermal diffusivity, a. At time = 0 let this particle be exposed to an environment which is at a temperature T, and subsequently let there be a purely radiative heat exchange between the particle and the environment resulting in a spatially uniform heat flux at the surface. If in addition to the above we make the assumptions that the sphere is a gray body radiator, homogeneous, isotropic, and opaque, and that the physical properties are independent of temperature, conservation of heat in the sphere may be written as follows: The boundary condition contained in Eq. [3] states that the initial temperature of the sphere is considered uniform, equalling Ti, whereas Eq. [4] is readily obtained from symmetry considerations. Eq.
