Discussion of the paper of WALDEMAR LINDGREN and CLYDE P. Ross, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1916, and printed in Bulletin No. 106, October, 1915, pp. 2171 to 2190. WALDEMAR LINDGREN, Boston, Mass.-I happened to go down to Cuba rather unexpectedly in the winter of 1914, and spent a few very interesting days at Daiquiri and Mayari. To C. F. Rand and his associates I am greatly indebted for permission to visit the mines and for many courtesies received. A few months after that, I met Professor Kemp who informed me that he had just returned from a geological study of Daiquiri. We talked over what to do in a case like that. We both liked to publish our opinions, and so finally agreed to write two papers entirely separately, I not knowing any of Professor Kemp's conclusions,1 and vice versa. We were rather interested in seeing what would happen. Of course, as might be expected, we disagreed on some points; not, of course, that we ordinarily disagree, but simply because when two men work in the same field and with different ideas, probably they are apt to vary slightly in their conclusions. Some years ago A. C. Spencer went down there for the military interim government and published the results of his study. His view of the origin of the deposit differed from that of Professor Kemp and from mine. So here are three different results obtained by three different geologists. Such differences in opinion on obscure subjects sometimes tend to bring geology into disrepute. It is perhaps not surprising that different opinions have been expressed, for this occurrence of iron ore is one of the most difficult to explain that I have ever seen. MAX ROESLER, Great Neck, L. I.-I had the opportunity this summer of spending about two months down at the Juragua deposits, and studied them with the idea of writing a paper on them, which I hope will come out later. The interpretation of the occurrence at Ocania Mine is the thing which particularly struck me, in the last paper. At the Ocania Mine we may have these large blocks of limestone which have been utterly and entirely altered, to a remarkable extent.

This paper reports on the results of a fundamental investigation of the behavior of rock under impact of a chisel-shaped bit. Drop-tester studies were conducted with strain gauges attached to the rock and striking bit-edge. It was established that rock behaves viscoelastically. Little correlation was found to exist between the strain waveforms detected on the rock surface and in the bit; thus, strain-time curves obtained with transducers mounted on the bit cannot be used to explain the sequence of events in rock breakage. It is estimated that nearly 1 per cent of the total energy of the blow is expended in permanent deformation of the rock. The strain- energy distribution on a rock surface as a result of chisel impact, which follows a simple law, is presented graphically. Experiments also were conducted with gauges embedded in the rock vertically below the line of impact and at an angle of approximately 45' to the vertical. No essential difference was observed in the type of wave obtained with embedded gauges and with gauges on the surface, as may have been anticipated from theory. INTRODUCTION Through the ages great strides have been taken towards improvement of the various techniques applied in the breakage of rock. Indeed, numerous applications of the rock-failure process are an integral part of present-day industry, including oil well drilling. Yet, astonishingly, little is known regarding the behavior of rock under dynamic loading or the mechanism of rock failure. The value of impact loading studies from the point of view of drilling is evident, however, and requires little elaboration because impact of a chisel edge on rock forms the basic action constituting most common methods of drilling. RELATED STUDIES Impact studies of communition and fragmentation conducted by Fahrenwald, et a1,8 Poncelet,l7 Axelson, et a1,2 Piret,16 Hartman and pfleider,ll Charles and deBruyn,5 and others have been of considerable help in understanding rock-breakage phenomena. Further insight into the basic action of drilling and penetration has been obtained by the work of Irving,13 Cherkasov and Shlyapin,6 BOrcherdt,3 Shepherd,19 Shreiner and Pavlova,20 Drilling Research Inc.7 Hartman,10 Appl and Gatley1 and several other investigators. However, knowledge concerning the stresses and strains induced in the rock and bit during impact remains scant. Recent photoelastic studies by Tandanand and Hartman (1961. 1962)22, 23 have shed light on stress distributions and Fracturing produced in plastics by chisel-shaped bits. In the field of transient strain Pulses and their role in rock drilling, the only extensive work has been performed by Drilling Research Inc. (DRI). They attached strain gauges to the shank of a bit and conducted drop-tester studies, using a die-shaped bit to obtain force-time diagrams. Their work led to the conclusion that, for a given rock type, the first peak of force occurs at a fixed level regardless of the total energy in the system, provided it exceeds a certain minimum threshold level. Further, on this basis an explanation was offered for the sequence of events in crater formation as the result of a single blow on rock. PURPOSE OF PRESENT STUDY The investigations reported in this paper were conducted in a manner similar to the DRI approach, but with the objective of determining the strain distribution in the rock around the area of bit impact and, to a limited extent, the strain in the chisel-shaped bit itself. FEAST and famine-or, chronologically, famine and feast-have characterized the aluminum supply program during 1943. Fortunately for the war effort the famine phase is over and aluminum production is now in the happy position of being abundantly able to supply all the requirements of the armed services plus a monthly surplus which is building up a substantial stock pile as a reserve against any contingencies. But the present condition of oversupply cannot be attributed to the super-efficiency of the aluminum production program which was designed to take care of the over-all requirements of the war with little or no margin of safety. The present more than comfortable situation is due primarily to the fact that the armed services generally have not consumed anything approaching the amount of aluminum which their requirement estimates indicated.

The rate of copper corrosion in liquid lead was studied as a function of flow rate and temperature in a closed isothermal loop system between 350" and 500°C. Kinetic data were interpreted with the Nernst-Brunner equation and the Chilton-Colbum mass transfer analogy to heat transfer. Over the range of temperatures and flow rates employed the solution rate constant varied from 2 x 10-3 to 20 x 10-3 cm per sec. The rate constant was found to vary with the 0.76 power of the Reynolds number in the range 7500 < Re < 40,000. The results of this investigation indicate that the Cu-Pb corrosion process is controlled largely by diffusion across a boundary layer. particularly at the higher temperatures. The effective boundary layer for diffusion is found to be approximately three to four times smaller than the momentum boundary layer. CORROSION by liquid metals has long been a problem during melting, static containment, and casting. Recently, considerable emphasis has been placed on the understanding of liquid metal corrosion mechanisms in an effort to prevent mass transfer and eventual failure in liquid metal heat exchangers and in liquid-metal-fueled nuclear reactors. The present investigation was conducted to determine the relationships which exist between corrosion kinetics and hydrodynamic conditions in an isothermal loop containing a simple liquid metal-solid metal corrosion system. The Cu-Pb system was chosen for its simplicity and ease in handling. Previous isothermal Cu-Pb corrosion studies1-3 have been conducted in both static and dynamic systems but not under conditions which allow easy "scale-up" to engineering systems, such as liquid metal heat exchangers. On the other hand, most liquid metal loops which have been used to evaluate mass transfer rates4 have been driven with temperature gradients under conditions of natural convection and unknown flow rates. The primary contributions of this research are twofold: 1) to evaluate the design of a simple isothermal loop corrosion system and 2) to investigate liquid metal corrosion behavior under well-defined hydrodynamic conditions. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL WORK The apparatus used to measure the Cu-Pb corrosion rates is shown schematically in Fig. 1. The loop system consisted of 1) a reservoir made of Type 316 stainless steel containing a centrifugal pump and 2) stainless-steel tubing containing a removable copper test section. The copper test section was OFHC hard-drawn tubing, 11.0 0.05 cm in length and 0.775 ±0.005 cm ID. A Type 316 stainless-steel venturi meter* was inserted in place of the copper test sec- tion in order to determine the lead velocity as a function of pump speed at each temperature. The Cu-Pb system was chosen for this study because the solubility of copper in liquid lead is large enough to measure accurately but small enough that the diameter of the copper tubing was not changed significantly by corrosion. There are no intermediate phases formed in the system, and the solid solubility of lead in copper is vanishingly small so that back-diffusion cannot occur. Molten lead (corroding grade; 99.94+ pct Pb, 0.0015 max pct Cu) was charged from an auxiliary melting furnace into the system under an argon cover to minimize oxidation. The lead was then maintained at constant temperature by a stirred molten salt bath in which the loop was immersed to a depth just above the lead level in the reservoir, Fig. 1. The total volume of lead in the system was 320 2 cu cm.

The solidus is usually the least satisfactorily determined portion of a phase diagram. Cooling curves, which succeed well with the liquidus, show the solidus inaccurately or not at all because of segregation which occurs during freezing. Heating curves of carefully homogenized alloys might be expected to indicate accurately the solidus, but they are seldom used. Dynamic methods involving heating or cooling are never completely satisfactory because of uncertainty as to whether equilibrium is attained. A static method in which the specimen may be allowed hours, days, or even weeks to attain equilibrium is to be preferred. In a static method a solid solution, for example, is first made thoroughly homogeneous, then heated to successively higher temperatures. After sufficient time at each temperature to assure equilibrium, some property is measured which should alter strikingly when melting begins. Microscopic examination can be used to detect the beginning of melting, but the method is tedious since the specimen must be quenched, sectioned, polished, and etched before each examination. Of all the physical properties which change on melting, electrical resistance is probably the most satisfactory to measure. The measurement may be made while the specimen is at temperature without damage to the specimen. It may be repeated indefinitely to ascertain when equilibrium has been achieved. Measurements may be made on a single specimen over the whole range of temperature. Most metals approximately double their resistance on melting. Since an accuracy of a few tenths of a percent is easy to achieve, the method is highly sensitive to the beginning of melting. In spite of these advantages, which have been perceived for a long time,l,2 a reasonable search of the literature has failed to reveal a single case in which the method has been satisfactorily applied in practice to the determination of solidus temperatures. The use of electrical resistance measurements appears to have been confined in practice to changes in the solid state. In the work described in the following pages we have applied the electrical resistance method to the solidus of the lead-tin system. We have found the method to be convenient, reproducible, and highly sensitive. We chose the lead-tin system because it leads to few technical difficulties. Furthermore, a number of determinations of solidus have been made in this system by various methods and results could be checked against them. However, all published results are not in good agreement with one another, so this work should help in determining the solidus more precisely. The Lead-tin Diagram Because of its commercial importance, there have been numerous investigations of the lead-tin diagram. The results of the most recent work on the solidus are indicated in Fig 7, as well as the results of the present work. The works of Honda and Abe3 and of Stockdale4 agree fairly well with each other and with the present work. Jeffery&apos;s5 data indicate the solidus to be about 50°C lower. Honda and Abe3 used differential thermal analysis on both heating and cooling cycles. Stockdale4 used the microscopic method and also differential heating curves. Stockdale&apos;s results were about 4" higher than those of Honda and Abe at low tin contents and lower at higher tin contents. These results also agree with those of Rosen-hain and Tucker.= Jeffery5 used electrical resistance measurements of the alloy as it was being heated or cooled. Apparently he did not attain equilibrium as his results are about 40°C lower than those of Stockdale4 or Honda and Abe.3 MATERIALS AND METHODS The lead and tin used were of high purity. They were supplied by the American Smelting and Refining Co., who gave the following analyses: Lead: silver, 0.0016 oz per ton; copper, 0.0008 pct; cadmium, 0.0007 pct; zinc, 0.0002 pct; arsenic, 0.0003 pct; antimony, 0.0002 pct; bismuth, 0.0005 pct; tin, 0.0001 pct; iron, 0.0020 pct; lead (by difference), 99.995 pct. Tin: antimony, 0.037 pct; arsenic, 0.020 pct; bismuth, 0.004 pct; cadmium, trace; copper, 0.025 pct; iron, 0.004 pct; lead, 0.020 pct; nickel and cobalt, 0.005 pct; silver, 0.0005 pct; sulphur, 0.005 pct; tin (by .-difference). 99.88 pct. One hundred grams of metal with the desired proportions of lead and tin was weighed out to the nearest one-tenth of a milligram. The mixture was placed in a silica crucible, covered with charcoal, and melted in a reducing atmosphere in a gas-fired furnace. The alloy was well stirred. Chemical analysis of two of the alloys checked closely with the weighed portions. The compositions of the remainder of the alloys were taken directly from the weighings, without chemical analysis.

THE first press was installed in June, 1910, and the second in March,1911. They produce 1,000 briquettes per hour, weighing 5 kg. (11.05 1b.) each, under a pressure of about 400 kg. per square centimeter (5,689.2 lb. per square inch). The chloride of magnesium is received from the potash mines at Hanover in tank cars in approximately a 35 per cent. solution. The quantity of solution added to the flue dust varies between 2 and 3 per cent., so that the briquettes contain about 1 per cent of MgCl2. To fresh dust as much as 10 per cent. of coke breeze may be added and bri¬quettes made that still have a crushing strength of from 25 to 30 kg. (377 to 426.6 lb. per square inch) after 36 hr., and 45 kg. (639.9 lb. per square inch) after six days. After having treated 140,000 tons of the material, the reports of the blast furnaces show that the briquettes improved the action of a furnace and produced less dust than did Minette ore. As much as 35 per cent. of briquettes is added to the furnace charge without bad effects on operations. The presence of chlorine did not produce any corrosion in the furnace, downtakes or other piping. The presence of a certain amount of chlorine in the dust reduces the amount of chloride of magnesium which it is necessary to add for briquetting.

Western Pennsylvania and for Illinois in 1922.2 The result, representing slightly over 928;000,000 net tons, is shown in Table 1. Some of the companies furnishing data were unable to segregate the timber into classes of use but for those who did, Table 2 shows the board feet of posts and cross bars used per ton of coal mined and the, percentage of the total timber consumed that was used in roof support. The importance of grain size and its control in wrought brass needs no lengthy discussion, since specifications so often make exact control imperative. Aids to this control are therefore of interest. The effect of a number of different elements on the grain growth of brass under various conditions of annealing has been reported in the technical literature. In particular, a paper by Cook and Miller1 a few years ago, with the discussion that followed, gave valuable information on the effects of iron, phosphorus, manganese, aluminum, aluminum plus nickel, and aluminum plus silicon. Price12 in his discussion of that paper, added a description of some commercial brasses that exhibited a grain-refining effect owing to the presence of 2 per cent A1 and 1 per cent Ni. Gibson and Doss3 have recently given data on the effect of iron on annealing high brass. No comprehensive study, however, has been given to the effect of additions of chromium. It has been the purpose of this investigation to determine the effect of adding various amounts of chromium to a plain cartridge brass, particularly in regard to the effect on grain growth in various annealing treatments after cold-working. Prepakation of Alloys Alloys of high-purity brass of 68.5 Cu, 31.5 Zn composition were made containing from 0 to 0.17 per cent Cr. These were produced in induction furnaces, using unlined graphite crucibles to hold the charge. The melts were cast into rectangular chill molds giving ingots about % by 3 by 10 in. in size.

Arthur Jarman, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia (communication to the Secretary*):—All designs for modern metallurgical and chemical laboratories should provide each student&apos;s desk with a hood or cupboard for the removal of fumes, but I doubt the advisability of placing air-baths and similar apparatus close to the hot plate. It seems to me that unless the draft be exceptionally strong the fumes from ordinary wet assay work will corrode the iron-work of the fittings, in which case the baths would have to be removed to a general desk in order to lighten the work of the laboratory attendant. Since the laboratory described by Mr. White has been in use for two years, I should like to ask if any inconvenience has resulted from this corrosion. If not, it is certainly an important improvement to have the air-baths and similar apparatus placed on the student&apos;s desk. The hoods described by Mr. White are supplied with a good draft by means of a fan, which gives them a great advantage

A simple technique has been developed which reveals glide dislocations in zone-refined aluminum as etch pits. The technique has been tested quantitatively by making dislocation counts on aluminum single crystals deformed in pure bending. The method has the advantage of being insensitive to the orientation of the surface under examination. A number of etchants which will reveal dislocations in annealed aluminum have been reported.&apos;-&apos; These etchants apparently depend on decoration of the dislocations by an impurity (probably iron) and cannot, therefore, be used to reveal fresh glide dislocations. In addition, it is unlikely that screw dislocations will be etched because of their small attraction for impurity atoms. Amelinckx6 has reported that glide dislocations located along slip traces can be revealed by fluo-rated aqua regia. This work indicated that dislocations themselves, irrespective of decoration by impurity atoms, are responsible for the etch pits. However, as a result of additional etching experiments, Wyon and Marchin7 concluded that dislocations alone are not sufficient to explain the localization of etch pits on slip lines in aluminum using chemical etch-pitting techniques. In addition, their results show that glide dislocations are revealed only on surfaces approximately parallel to a (100) axis and that not all slip systems are attacked. These observations have been confirmed by the present authors. The technique described in this article is insensitive to the orientation of the surface, and reveals dislocations on all glide systems. Fig. 1 shows a deformed region in the neighborhood of a scratch. Dislocations can be seen along three slip traces. In the present work, single crystals of zone-refined aluminum are polished for from 2 to 5 min in a chemical polishing reagent held at 100°C, as described by Herenguel and second:&apos; H2Sol 60 pct H3PO4 30 pct HNO3 10 pet The samples are then coated with a thin oxide film by annealing in air at 450°C for 1 hr and cooling in the furnace. After deformation, dislocation etch pits are developed by immersing the specimen in the same polishing solution which is now held at a temperature of 50°C. The formation of small hydrogen bubbles indicates that etching has occurred. The sample is immediately removed from the solution. Prolonged etching results in enlargement of the pits and, in regions of high dislocation density, the overlapping and loss of resolution of individual pits. It is the experience of the authors that contact with iron will ruinously contaminate the reagent. With careful etching, dislocations separated by half a micron can be resolved optically and the method has been shown to be sufficiently sensitive to reveal dislocations produced during the pre-easy glide region of deformation, Fig. 2. A few examples of glide-dislocation configurations, as revealed by this technique, are shown in Figs. 1 to 4.

IN discussing the problem of abnormal magnetic polarization, C. A. Heiland1? emphasized the unfortunate fact that our knowledge of the geological and physical conditions relating to such occurrences is very limited and that a more detailed insight into their physical causes would be extremely valuable for interpreting measured anomalies. He also pointed out that to arrive at quantitative physical formulas that would express the conditions that cause abnormal polarization many more occurrences of the kind would have to be recorded. The first part of this paper is a contribution to such descriptions.

An improved method of logging formation density has been developed in which the formation is bombarded with a collimuted beam of gamma rays. By means of a scintillation detector and pulse height discriminator, the gamma-ray energy band is accepted and recorded which corresponds to deepest penetration into the formation. Laboratory tests on a field tool revealed no borehole diameter effect for smooth holes and no effect of formation chemistry, except insofar as chemistry affects density. In extensive field tests, the density log has exhibited satisfactory agree-ment with core measurements and has correlated accurately with other logs. INTRODUCTION This paper describes an improved method of logging formation density by means of back-scattered gamma rays to penetrate the formation together with energy discrimination to select only that energy (or frequency) range corresponding to deepest penetration into the forma- tion. This method of density logging was developed at the La Habra laboratory of California Research Corp.* Field instruments have been built and tested by McCullough Tool Co. and commercial service has begun in some areas. All of the data discussed here were obtained for the original field tool. The density log can be a valuable adjunct to existing logs because of its use in determining porosity quantitatively. It is useful also in connection with seismic and gravity surveys where formation density information is of interest. PHYSICAL PRINCIPLES The intensity, I, of a beam of gamma rays after traversing a distance, x, in an absorbing medium is given by I = loe -ax where I, is the intensity of the beam entering the medium and a the attenuation constant or macroscopic cross section of the medium for gamma-ray absorption. The macroscopic cross section depends on the number and types of atoms per unit volume and the gamma-ray energy. In brief, it is the sum of the atomic cross sections of all atoms per cubic centimeter. The density of the material is the sum of the masses of all atoms per cubic centimeter. Thus, the density and the macroscopic cross section for gam-ma-ray absorption vary in propor- tion to the number of atoms per cubic centimeter. The density of the material increases, of course, if the atomic masses increase without a change in the number of atoms per cubic centimeter. When the density increases in this latter way, the macroscopic cross section increases also, but disproportionately. This results from the fact that part of the gamma-ray absorption arises from the photoelectric effect and the pair-production effect**, which are proportional to the sixth and to the second power, respectively, of the atomic number of the absorber. The remainder of the absorption results from the Compton effect, and is directly proportional to the atomic number. The gamma rays that undergo Compton scattering are not immediately absorbed. Since these rays are scattered in all directions, a fraction will emerge from the face of the medium at which they entered. If a gamma-ray shield is placed between the source and detector, most gamma rays reaching the detector will be those scattered out of the medium. The intensity will depend on absorption and scattering in the medium, and so indicates the density of the medium. For gamma rays for which Compton scattering prevails, the intensity

ABOUT three years ago at a coal mining institute meeting, it was predicted that mechanical load-ing underground would progress faster than either the electric coal-cutting machines or electric loco-motives had in previous years. This prediction has proved correct so far. In 1925 over 6,000,000 tons of,coal was loaded mechanically underground in the United States and it is estimated that the 1926 tonnage will reach 10,000,000. The use of electric mining machines and locomotives .has prepared the way for quick results. Most coal mines are now equipped with electric power and have a competent staff who understands its use. In spite of this advantage the introduction of the loading machines brings many new problems. Im-proved and concentrated transportation; doing the drilling, shooting, tracklaying and face timbering with company men instead of the former tonnage men; doing the work on the new basis in an economical and efficient manner; altering or modifying mining systems where necessary to further improve the work and reduce oper-ating costs; improving the percentage of lump coal and reducing the slack content where desirable; improving the cleaning of the coal and obtaining a more dependable .and uniform output are a few of the problems that must be met. Each of the different types of loaders now on the market has its particular advantages and disadvantages for a given mining condition. Even with the same mining conditions one type will work well under one ;system of handling, whereas another may favor another system or mining method.

Phosphorus is essential to all life processes and therefore to the existence of man. In this role, there are no substitutes for phosphorus. In a commercial sense, phosphorus and its compounds are important to our entire economy, both in agricultural and in nonagricultural applications. The world&apos;s phosphate requirements are met by mining phosphate rock. Two general types of phosphate ore deposits are commercially important-igneous and sedimentary. Igneous deposits generally are more difficult and more expensive to mine than sedimentary deposits and are of importance mainly in the USSR, North Vietnam, and South Africa. Approximately 15% of current world production comes from these deposits. Over 80% of world production is from the pellet sedimentary deposits of Florida, North Africa, and elsewhere. Guano, the second type of sedimentary deposit, is produced in South America but is declining in world importance. Production Production of phosphate rock was reported in 31 countries during 1972. However, about 80% of world output is produced in three countries: the United States, the USSR, and Morocco (Table 15.2A.1). Throughout the past 20 years, between 75% and 80% of world output has been produced by these three leading countries. Between 1948 and 1972 world production increased at an average rate of 10% per year, from 21.5 to 103.9 million tons. Growth was quite steady at 6% per year through 1963, but in the 5 years from 1963 to 1968 production increased 11 1/2% per year. Since 1968 production has increased about 91/2 % annually. Since 1948 several new phosphate mining ventures have been developed in Senegal, Togo, Israel, and North Vietnam. In the same period, only one important phosphate deposit, on Makatea Island, has been mined out and closed. A number of other phosphate mining ventures are in various stages of planning and development. The most important new venture in phosphate mining is in the Spanish Sahara. New mining capacity is expected also in Syria, and serious investigation is in progress in Peru, India, Turkey, and Australia. Major expansion of existing operations is expected in Morocco, Russia, Tunisia, Israel, and Jordan. Consumption Historical data on world consumption of phosphate rock are not available in detail, but world consumption of phosphate has closely paralleled world production in the past two decades.
