Although Venezuelan production attained a new peak in 1938, passing the 190 million barrel mark for the first time, there was a distinct flattening of the steep upward trend that marked 1937 and preceding years. The annual total of 190,231,780 bbl. was only 31/3 million barrels above the 1937 figure, an increase of slightly less than 2 per cent, which contrasts sharply with the 20 per cent increase of 1937 over 1936. As in the previous year, the Lake Maracaibo fields supplied approximately 73 per cent of the oil produced, Lagunillas remaining the largest single contributor in spite of a 17 million barrel decrease in its annual output. Tia Juana increased its percentage of the Venezuelan total from 14.1 per cent in 1937 to 23.4 per cent in 1938; La Rosa showed little change with 13.7 per cent; Quiriquire in eastern Venezuela was also little changed with 13.2 per cent; Mene Grande, the only other field of real importance, declined from 7.7 per cent of the total in 1937 to 6.6 per cent for 1938. Two new fields, Temblador and Bachaquero, began actively to ship oil during the year, and by November were averaging 7600 and 10,000 bbl. per day, respectively. The former is in eastern Venezuela, and the latter is the most southern of the proven Lake Maracaibo fields. (A map of Venezuela was published in Volume 127 of the Transactions.) Table 1 gives a complete résumé of Venezuelan production by fields for 1937 and 1938, and shows that 1,685,575,663 bbl. had been produced to Dec. 31, 1938. The percentage contributed by each of the principal fields to this total is shown in Table 3, as well as their trends over the past several years. From these data it is apparent that the Maracaibo Basin is the principal source of Venezuelan production, and will probably continue to hold this position for some years. At the year's end 2657 oil wells were producing, of which 2425 were in western and 232 in eastern Venezuela; 36 per cent were on natural flow, 57 ppr cent were pumping, and 7 per cent were on air or gas lift. Out of 523 wells drilled, 507 producers were completed in 1938, five less than in the previous year and nearly 100 less than in 1929. These

The first production on the Island of Trinidad was discovered 29 years ago; 13,275 acres were proved for oil and gas to the end of 1937, and 145,076,700 bbl. was produced from 2661 wells, or 10,928 bbl per acre. The production of oil in 1936 was 13,237,030 bbl. and in 1937 a new peak of 15,498,350 bbl. was reached. During November 1937, the daily average production was 43,350 bbl., or 35 bbl. per well, while the maximum gas production was 45 million cubic feet daily. Two hundred fifty wells were completed during 1937 and 15 abandoned. At the end of last year, 800 wells had been temporarily shut down, 1235 were producing oil and gas, and 2 were producing gas only. Six hundred seventy-nine dry wells had been drilled to the end of 1937. At the end of November 1937, the following oil-producing methods were in use: 395 wells flowing, 491 pumping, 97 on air-gas lift and 252 wells miscellaneous. There were no flooding operations. The oil is produced from the Miocene and Eocene and is of both asphalt and paraffin base. The gas produced averaged approximately 1050 B.t.u. per cu. ft. with 0.8 gal. of gasoline per 1000 cubic feet.

While I was engaged in the preparation of a catalogue or list of mineral localities of the United States, east of the one hundredth meridian, for the U. S. Geological Survey, the thought occurred to me that an arrangement or classification of the iron-ore districts of the eastern part of our country according to their geological horizons would be an interesting topic for a paper, and would furnish a basis upon which to arrange many facts brought out by the constant development of our iron-mining districts. Examination showed that characteristic cleavage step patterns are observed on the cleavage surfaces of undeformed, slipped, bent, twinned, compressed, and indented zinc crystals; and the effect of temperature is discussed. Dimples were seen to produce cleavage steps in a treelike pattern in otherwise undeformed crystals. The steps seem to originate when cracks intersect screw dislocations. IT has been known for a long time that the path of fracture in polycrystals may be discontinuous (see Jaffe, Reed, and Mannl for review). Recently, Kies, Sullivan, and Irwin2 have proposed, and given evidence, that crack propagation is discontinuous within individual crystals as well. Other evidence has been given by Low.' When discontinuous cracks within a crystal join together to make a macrocrack, the lamellae between each set of two cracks are torn somewhere, forming small cliffs. These cliffs appear as lines when the cleavage surface is observed microscopically.4,5 The lines have been called vein, tree, and riverlike markings by various authors, and they have sometimes been mistaken for fissures. The descriptive term cleavage steps is used in this paper. Cleavage steps vary in height over a wide range of values, from molecular dimensionsG to lor. and larger. Kies, Sullivan, and Irwin,2 as well as George,' have shown that the gross cleavage step patterns for plastics, polycrystalline metals, and for mono-crystals are sometimes similar. Thus, they depend mostly on the mechanical variables that prevail during cleavage and are relatively insensitive to the structure of the material. For example, parabolic markings2,7,8 sometimes result when cracks open up ahead of, and not coplanar with, the main crack front. If the advance crack has the same velocity as the main crack, their intersection line is a parabola, otherwise it is a hyperbola or an ellipse. The patterns are strongly affected by differences in crack velocities. This results in chevron patterns which point to the place of origin of the main crack. It is the purpose of this paper to demonstrate the existence of a mechanism of cleavage step formation which is a continuous rather than a discontinuous process. Also, certain characteristic step patterns are described, and the strong effect of temperature is shown. The specimens were zinc monocrystals (grown from 99.999+ pct pure metal). These were cleaved at room temperature and at — 196°C. Results and Discussion Cleavage step patterns are highly variable from point to point on a given specimen, as well as from one specimen to another. Although the patterns shown in the photographs are typical, they have been selected for graphic illustration. Figs. la and lb compare undeformed crystals that were cleaved at —196 °C and room temperature, respectively. Cleavage at room temperature (Fig. lb) resulted in a higher density of high steps (dark black lines) and enhanced the visibility of the fine background markings. Deformation by simple slip caused no marked change in the step patterns until the glide strain reached about 1.0. But, as Fig. lc shows, the density of high cleavage steps was greatly increased by large glide strains. Corrugations lying perpendicular to the slip direction may also be seen in Fig. lc. These are caused by deformation bands. The cleavage resistance of the crystal of Fig. lc was very high compared to undeformed crystals (estimated by the force on a needle required for cleavage). Striking and varied cleavage step patterns were observed on bent crystals. Two characteristic patterns that were observed on crystals bent at 25°C, and cleaved by reverse bending at —196°C, are shown in Figs. 2a and 2b. The first, Fig. 2a, consists of V-shaped lines similar to the parabolas of other materials2,7 Fig. 2b shows a pattern that is the equivalent of Fig. la, consisting of faint background lines with a few higher step markings. Cleavage of bent crystals at room temperature resulted in Figs. 2c and 2d. Now, the cleavage step lines show a strong tendency to follow one of two perpendicular paths. In Fig. 2c (bent once), many of the cleavage step components that lie parallel to the bend axis are assembled into irregular lines. In Fig. 2d (bent twice), the cleavage steps again tend to consist of two perpendicular components, but neither of the components is assembled into lines. Also, the step density is higher.

A FORM of apparatus for volumetric determinations which shall possess the features requisite for the constant use of potassium permanganate, is a very desirable fixture in a well-appointed laboratory. Expedients to economize time and insure accuracy are generously employed for various other reagents, while the permanganate seems to have been consigned to the use of an ordinary burette, and a black bottle of the standardized solution. But the introduction of new, methods dependent on the permanganate, and the urgency of technical requirements where it has long been indispensable, require a revision of practice more scientific and convenient. The apparatus designed by the writer for the laboratory of the Thomas Iron Company at Hokendauqua, Pa., is so simply contrived and works with such entire satisfaction that a description of it may be of use. It may be prefaced that the characteristics of a suitable device offer some mechanical difficulties when combined in a continuous appliance. The burette, B (50 C.C. to 1/10 c.c.), shown in Fig. 1, consists of the graduated tube proper and an arm, E, fused to it below the 50 c.c. mark. At its top are rubber connections with the blast-aspirator, shown in the cut (Fig. 2) of the front view. By means of an extra stopcock, D, connection through E is established with the reservoir F. It is perhaps not widely realized that extraction and saturation processes carried out on oil well core samples alter the properties of these samples to varying degrees. On the other hand it is felt by some that quick-freezing of core samples increases their permeability and porosity significantly. Accordingly, laboratory tests were carried out on 49 pairs of horizontally adjacent samples in order to differentiate between the effect of quick-freezing per se on permeability and porosity of the samples, as distinguished from the effect of the identical saturation treatment on permeability and porosity of the companion samples. Also, additional field data were obtained on comparison of frozen vs unfrozen companion samples. LABORATORY INVESTIGATION OF FREEZING us SATURATION EFFECTS Procedure The samples used in these tests were two-cm cubes cut in horizontally adjacent pairs from cores from eight Gulf Coast and Mid-Continent wells, which cores had not previously been frozen. These samples were extracted with carbon tetrachloride, dried, and air permeabilities run in the conventional manner. They were then evacuated and saturated with brine of 25,000 ppm sodium chloride content, and porosities determined by gain in weight. The samples were partially desaturated by evaporation down to an average brine saturation of 68 per cent. One sample from each pair was quick-frozen by covering with dry ice after wrapping in a single layer of paper, and allowed to remain frozen for about two hours; the companion sample from each pair was not frozen. After thawing the frozen sample, all samples were immersed in tap water overnight in order to leach out most of the brine. Air permeabilities were re-run, and the samples were again saturated with brine to determine a second porosity value. For purposes of averaging of data, the samples were grouped according to four permeability ranges, from 0 to 10, 10 to 100, 100 to 1,000, and 1,000 to 3,840 md. Average permeability and porosity changes for the frozen vs the unfrozen adjacent samples are shown in Table 1. Discussion As may be seen from Table 1, the averages of the per cent permeability increases for the quick-frozen samples ranged from 3.8 to 12.9 per cent among the four permeability groups. The average changes among the four groups of unfrozen companion samples ranged from a decrease of 0.2 per cent to an increase of 9.3 per cent. There was no particular correlation of these changes with magnitude of permeability; however, the increase for each group of frozen samples paralleled the increase for the corresponding unfrozen samples. The differences between the two sets of values are believed to be a valid indication of the effect of the quick-freezing in itself, since the treatment of the two samples in each pair was identical except for freezing. The permeability changes which are strictly the result of the quick-freezing are shown in the sixth column of Table 1. These range from a decrease of 0.9 per cent to an increase of 4.0 per cent; the overall weighted average is 1.2 per cent, as compared to an average increase of 6.8 per cent caused by the saturation treatment of the samples not frozen. The average porosity changes are in general smaller than the changes in permeability, and range from a decrease of 2.3 per cent to an increase of 3.3 per cent. The overall weighted average change ascribed to the quick-freezing is 1.0 per cent of porosity. Many factors can contribute to the changes in permeability and porosity observed when subjecting cores to the simple processes used in these tests. Such are: hydration and swelling of clay, adsorption of ions, changes in surface structure and wettability, expansion and compression effects due to ice formation, shrinking and cracking, leaching of salts and colloids, displacement of particles resulting in either blocking or enlarging of pore openings. Whatever particular mechanisms are involved. however, it is apparent not only from this study but also from other investigations in the literature' not directly concerned with quick-freezing, that the effects produced by commonly used extraction, saturation and drying techniques may be of considerable magnitude The results of this study indicate that for the particular samples and techniques used, such effects are of the order of five to six times the effect of quick-freezing. insofar as changes in permeability are concerned. It may be argued that these samples might not include extremely shaly material where the effect of freezing upon permeability may be much greater. However, had such material been available for these tests, it would undoubtedly have been very susceptible also to alteration by the extraction and saturation treatment used. To investigate this point further, the individual sample data were re-grouped according to the magnitude of the average per cent permeability increases for the pairs of samples, irrespective of permeability. The exploration of deposits of the metals will never become an exact science. There will always be an element of uncertainty in prospecting and developing mines. In countries where the surface has been closely scrutinized, most of the deposits whose outcrops contain valuable metals have probably been discovered. Many metalliferous deposits, however, are normally so much altered at the surface that the true significance of their outcrops is likely to be obscured. If a deposit is not exposed, its presence may become known by some one of its characteristics that is different in kind or in degree from a similar feature of the associated rock. Thus, a deposit that is not exposed may be discovered because of its magnetic property. So few minerals are strongly magnetic that the value of magnetic surveys is limited, but the dip needle has nevertheless proved of great aid in locating magnetic belts, and these in some regions are associated with workable iron ores. The Cuyuna Iron Range of Minnesota, which does not exhibit any outcrop of iron ore, was discovered by drilling "areas of attraction" that are due to belts of magnetic rocks associated with the iron ores. In some regions the use of the dip needle is justified, even if it does no more than reveal the strike of the rocks, since a knowledge of the latter enables the driller to locate and point his holes to advantage. The measures of gravity by the use of the pendulum are so accurate, or the limit of error is so small, that one might detect the presence of a concealed tabular deposit approximately at the surface, 34 ft. (10.36 m.) thick, having a density double that of the surrounding rocks. However, not many deposits have a density twice that of ordinary rocks and a thickness as great as 34 ft.; if they lie a short distance below the surface the density or the thickness must be even greater. Consequently, there is not much hope of sufficiently developing the gravity method of detecting deposits of heavy ores to make it of practical value. If the limit of error could be reduced to about one-tenth the present factor, and if the rather tedious and painstaking methods of determining gravity that are now in use could be simplified, the method would promise some degree

The activities of zinc in liquid Zn-A1 alloys in the temperature range of 1000' to 1160°K were determined by means of the isopiestic technique. The results are in reasonable agreement with the previous values determined by the radioactive tracer dew point method. Slightly negative excess entropies of mixing were found. The measured activities suggest that the a function for these alloys is not a constant, as has frequently been assumed, but is better represented by two straight line segments of different slopes. THE thermodynamic data of Al-Z alloys have been the subject of investigation by many authors. However, in the recent compilation of such data by Hult-gren et al.,5 the conclusion is reached that none of the previous measurements are reliable or consistent with each other. Since then two new sets of measurements have been reported,2, 8 both laying claim to good accuracies, yet showing very significant disagreement in the measured activity coefficients of zinc in Zn-A1 alloys and in the magnitude and sign of the excess entropies of mixing. Information on the thermodynamics of the system is of particular interest for interpreting results of the Bureau of Mines research on refining of zinc by distillation of die cast scrap. The present study was undertaken as an independent check on the recent values obtained from dew point measurements 8 and electromotive force measurements.' The isopiestic method, first introduced by Herasy-menko,' was chosen because it is one of the few thermodynamic techniques which, in principle at least, is carried out under perfect equilibrium conditions. The disadvantage of the method is that data are obtained at various random compositions and temperatures, which makes the interpretation somewhat cumbersome. The random errors arising from temperature gradients and fluctuations appear to be comparable to those of other techniques, as evidenced by the magnitude of the estimated uncertainties in the calculated integral thermodynamic quantities. An advantage of the method is that each run provides a relatively large amount of data; thus, it is less time consuming than those methods where samples of each composition must be measured individually. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The activities of zinc in liquid Zn-A1 alloys were measured by the isopiestic method which uses the principle of the tendency toward equilibrium of a series of samples at various temperatures under an imposed vapor pressure of the more volatile component (i.e., zinc, in this case). The basic apparatus is shown in Fig. 1. The small graphite crucibles that contained the metal samples were 15 mm ID and 13 mm deep with approximately 3 mm wall thickness. Each crucible was notched at the top and bottom to allow easy passage of vapor from one to another. At the beginning of an experiment each crucible was weighed on an analytical balance. Zinc and aluminum of spectrographic purity (99.999 pct) were then weighed into the crucibles. The amounts of each metal added were such that initial compositions varied above and below equilibrium values. One crucible contained only pure zinc. After weighing, the crucibles were stacked with the pure zinc on the bottom (corresponding to the lowest temperature in the furnace) and richest aluminum alloys at the top. The entire stack of crucibles was then placed in the silica glass container "E" which was then sealed under vacuum. Sixteen to twenty calibrated Chromel-Alumel thermocouples were attached by wire along the length of the silica tube, one or more adjacent to each sample.

By 1968, Cyprus Pima was milling 34.5 kt /d (38,000 tpd) of copper ore using a conventional flowsheet consisting of three stages of crushing, rod milk and ball, mills. A 13.6 kt /d (15,000 tpd) expansion was put onstream late in 1971 using primary crushing, semiautogenous milk, and ball mills. Identical ore is treated in both concentrators. This paper shows the weight and life of each liner for each crusher and each mill over a four year period from 1974-1977. Media consumption is shown for the same period and a comparison is made between the two reduction methods.

The coal-measures of George's Creek coal-region, in Maryland, lie in a comparatively flat synclinal basin, about 4 miles wide. The dip of the measures is, in places near the edge of the basin, as much as 20 feet in 100. The Pittsburgh seam, known locally as the " Big Vein," is the only seam worked at the present time. Ocean No. 3, one of the large mines of the Consolidation Coal Company, has its opening on the outcrop of the Pittsburgh seam, in a ravine which cuts into this seam to such an extent as to bring this opening to within a mile of the axis of the basin. After working all the coal to the rise of this point, the mine was further developed by extending a slope down the dip of the seam, making such an angle with the line of greatest dip as to give a grade varying from 1 to 10 per cent., down which the empty cars carry a rope from a single-drum winding-engine. The coal was worked from each side of this slope in successive Iifts during its progress. From the top of the slope, for a distance of 4000 feet to the fourth lift, the " make " of water is drained by gravity through a heading into the adjoining mine. Below this point the water was pumped into this same heading, at the fourth lift, from which point, as before mentioned, it flowed by gravity.

(communication to the Secretary): I have read with much pleasure the interesting and valuable paper by Mr. Kunz, and hope that the following brief notes, gathered a few years ago, while a resident in Mexico City, may help to elucidate the subjcct: Turquoise.—This was known to the Aztecs as Xihuitl. Santiago Ramirez states that they found it in the Cerro Xicohtzonc, close to Atzcapatzalco, a suburb of the City of Mexico (compare page 59). Opal.—This was known to the ancient Mexicans, for they named it mezcuitlatt (compare page 63). Jade.—Under this was iucluded a third mineral, prehnite, not mentioned by Mr. Kunz. According to James D. Dana, part of the "jade " of China is prehnite; and Humboldt informs us, in his work on New Spain, that the same species of jade is known in some parts of Mexico as mahagua (majagua ?). The same writer says, in his Views of the Cordilleras, that the Aztec name Tecpatl included flint, hornstone, and green jade; and finally, in his Travels in South America," he discusses the nature of the ancient amazon-stones, and declares them to have been made out of a jade resembling " compact feldspar," one of the constituents of the gabbro verde di Corsica. IIence those stones were probably composed of nephrite. According to Humboldt, the form given to them most frequently is that of the Babylomian cylinder, longitudinally perforated, and loaded with inscriptions and figures. They were also cut by the natives into very thin plates, perforated at the center, suspended by a thread, and worn as amulets. According to the historian Clavijero, the specific name given by the Aztecs to the nephritic stone (jadeite) was Quitzalitztli,

The mineralogy of the solids contained in the black-water effluent from coal preparation plants has been investigated. Samples were obtained from 13 locations, representing major coal seam in the Appalachian, mid-continent, and western regions of the United States. On the average, the samples were found to contain 60% carbonaceous material with the balance as mineral matter. The mineral fractions from all of the samples from the eastern half of the United States were found to be remarkably similar, consisting of over 50% illitic clays; about 10-15% each of kaolinite, calcite, and quartz; and lesser amounts of chlorite and pyrite. The western samples were somewhat different, generally containing significant quantities of montmorillonite clay. Flotation may be wed to recover additional clean coal contained in the black-water discharge.

WITH gold at $35 for the last four years, almost double the old figure, and 'an unlimited market, there is perhaps more activity in the mining and milling of that metal than in that of any other of the widely distributed ores. Despite threats from Russia, the Rand district is still dominant. In South Africa in 1936, 48,200,000 tons of gold ore was crushed after sorting out about 10 per cent of that mined. The pounding of 5914 trusty stamps on the 60 mi. of Rand reefs is noteworthy. At the end of 1935, 466 tube mills were operating on the Rand, the popular size being 6 1/2 by 20 ft. The grinding medium normally consists of ore pebbles picked from the ore but recently a composite load of 3-in. steel balls and pebbles has found favor for added capacity, a ratio of 2.5 tons of pebbles to one ton of halls being maintained. The total ore fed to the mills is only about 0.14 ton per hp.-hr. Such a slow rate 'of feed cannot help but result in overgrinding. Ball mills, 9 by 8 ft., some of which have come from Canada, are now being tried. Stamps have been ousted from all new flow sheets, but the old stamp mills are continually renovated and kept on duty as they are at the Homestake in the United States. Half of the world's gold and silver ores is still crushed by stamps, a few of which are single, dropping in individual mortars.'

PREFERRED orientation studies by Harris of rolled uranium rods indicated that hot rolling to a small reduction of area caused the (010) planes to become strongly oriented and the (110) planes weakly oriented perpendicular to the rolling direc- tion. The relative intensities of these two fiber texture components were reversed upon rolling to higher reductions of area. Cold rolling caused the (010) planes to become strongly aligned and the (130) planes weakly aligned perpendicularly to the rolling direction. The present investigation was undertaken to explore in more detail the effect on the rolling texture of variables, such as the penultimate condition, the final rolling temperature and reduction of area. In addition, the recrystallization texture of rolled uranium rods was also investigated.

INTERNAL The year 1976 was another outstanding year in the operation of the Institute and in the success of its varied activities. Total AIME membership reached 59,773 for a gain of. 6.4 percent. Total revenue increased to $5,111,2 10, up 22.4 percent, and balance sheet assets increased to $8,479,612, up 12.2 percent from the previous year. AIME and its constituent units conducted 30 technical meetings during the year, and attendance was up at most of them. Publications issued by the Constituent Societies continued a healthy growth. During the year 9 new local Sections were established, and at the end of the year the Institute had 150 Sections, with 19 of them overseas. Details on all of these operations are on pages 2 and 3 of this report.

In recent years there has been interest displayed in the precipitation phenomena occurring in austenitic alloys based on the binary Fe-Ni system.1'2 Previous communications have been extended covering the kinetics of clustering in the Fe-Ni-Ti system and the effect of cluster size on subsequent mechanical properties.3'4 To a great extent the question of coherency, which has a dominant role in determining the mechanical properties, is dictated by the degree of misfit between the precipitate and matrix. Thus, the change in lattice parameter of the matrix with composition is an important variable that should be examined. The lattice parameter, ao, of austenite was determined for Fe-29.75 Ni-1 to 6 Ti and Fe-27 Ni-1 to 10 Ti alloys in this study. The alloys used in this investigation were melted in a vacuum induction furnace from a starting stock of plast iron (99.95), electrolytic nickel (99.9), and ti- tanium sheet (99.5) in a MgO crucible. The alloy compositions in atomic percent are given in Table I and their relative position in the Fe-Ni-Ti ternary is indicated in Fig. 1. The chemical analyses were taken from the homogenized bulk materials treated in a manner related earlier.3 A diamond file was used to obtain powder from the bulk.
