Petrographic studies, assay records, and laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometer (LA-ICP-MS) analyses of major sulfides suggest nearly all of the gold at the Ernest Henry Cu-Au deposit occurs in the form of native gold or electrum (95-65 wt.% Au); sylvanite and dissolved gold in cobaltite, chalcopyrite, and pyrite make only minor contributions. LA-ICP-MS analyses of the gold contents of chalcopyrite gave from 8 to 139 ppb (mean = 56 ppb), more than an order of magnitude lower than those experimentally determined in chalcopyrite in equilibrium with native gold at the estimated mineralization temperatures (350°-450°C). Gold content is more variable in pyrite (1-400 ppb, mean = 77 ppb) and highest in narrow growth zones of a subordinate type of complexly zoned pyrite wherein it is associated with elevated As, Ag, Sn, Sb, Te, and Bi. Deposition of gold-electrum was closely associated with, but preceded some of the chalcopyrite deposition, as indicated by microtextures and lower bulk Au:Cu ratios in late-stage chalcopyrite-rich veins. Gold grains have maximum dimensions from <1 to 50 micrometers, and are heterogeneously distributed with most occurring in microscale clusters. Fifty-five out of 76 grains recorded in polished sections are in contact with both chalcopyrite and pyrite, and many of the rest are in sites where such a relationship could exist in the third dimension. The dominant textural sites are intergrowths with chalcopyrite in microveinlets cutting pyrite, and on faces of pyrite grains in contact with chalcopyrite. Scanning electron microscopy, electron microprobe analysis, and proton induced X-ray emission studies show that pyrite associated with gold includes complexly zoned, weakly zoned, arsenian, and arsenic-poor types. The textures are compatible with the possibility that most gold was deposited electrochemically as native metal on pyrite surfaces. The textural distribution of gold has important metallurgical implications given that the ore processing circuits at Ernest Henry and most other sulfide copper mines are designed to exclude pyrite (and arsenic) from concentrates.

"Placer Dome (CLA) operates the 90-year-old Dome Mine, in South Porcupine, Ontario.The milling operation currently processes 5 million tons of ore per year, from both the underground and Open pit mining operations, producing 320 000 ounces. The milling process is conventional crushing and grinding, with gold recovery by gravity followed by leach/CIP.Cyanide tailings are impounded in a large (325 ha) tailings area where cyanide is allowed to degrade naturally. Effluent is discharged seasonally during the summer and early fall months to maintain site water balance. Pond water is reclaimed for sole use within the mill process.In 1995, an Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) was constructed for the purpose of removing dissolved metals and suspended solids. In 1997, an INCO S02/Air cyanide destruction module was added.During this time period, the treated effluent often failed toxicity tests required by the Ontario MISA Regulation, even though effluent chemical parameters were below permit limits. Two studies identified ammonia as the toxicant to Rainbow Trout, and free copper as the toxicant to Daphnia magna.From a literature study, and contacts within the Ontario Mining Association, the use of chelation as a final end of pipe treatment step to render any remaining free copper and metal fractions biologically unavailable was considered. Lab and plant scale tests followed.During the 1999 ETP operating season, the addition of the chelant EDTA (ethylene-diamine-tetraacetic-acid) commenced. To date discharged effluent has passed all toxicity tests.The paper will review the effluent treatment history, current effluent treatment plant operation, and detail the use of EDTA for successful toxicity control.History of Tailings Deposition, and Effluent Treatment From 1910 to 1995Over it’s ninety years of operation, the Dome Mine milling circuit has changed from the original 1910 stamp-mill mercury plant, to today’s modem 14 000 ton per day automated gravity and Carbon in Pulp based plant.By the 19803, a modern mill was operating on mainly underground mined ore. The plant was operating at some 3 800 tons per day, using fairly conventional processing routes.The number 4 tailings dam was being used for tailing’s deposition.All effluent treatment was by natural degradation of cyanide. Discharge was from decanting type structures during the summer months only, maximizing the use of natural degradation no tailings effluent was recycled for Mill use."

"The McClean Lake operation is located in the Eastern Shore of the Athabasca Basin in northern Saskatchewan some 700-air kilometers north of Saskatoon. It is operated by Cogema Resources Inc., the major share holder of the joint venture consisting of Cogema Resources Inc., Denison Mines Limited and OURD, a consortium of Japanese utilities.The JEB mill is the first uranium mill to be constructed and licensed in North America within the last 15 years. The mill uses conventional uranium unit process but employs innovative techniques unique to the JEB mill.This paper presents brief descriptions of the various unit processes, the innovations and the commissioning strategies developed to achieve the designed production capacity in the shortest possible time.INTRODUCTIONThe McClean Lake ore body was discovered in 1979, followed by the discovery of the JEB ore body in 1982. From 1985 to 1990, a cluster of deposits named Sue A, Sue B and Sue C were discovered. Environmental Impact Assessment (EIS) of the McClean Lake project began in 1990 under a joint federal-provincial process. Following the public hearings in 1993, the governments gave approval to proceed with the construction of the project, subject to fulfilling licensing requirements.The McClean Lake ores are located in the uranium-rich geological region of Saskatchewan known as the Athabasca Basin, 700 air kilometers north of Saskatoon. The JEB mill is located near the mined out JEB open pit that is now used as the tailing depository.The approved mill has a production capacity of 6,000,000 pounds of U3O8 annually and is capable and licensed to process JEB, Sue A, Sue B, Sue C, McClean Lake, and Midwest Lake deposits. Although the EIS has been approved, Mining of the Midwest Lake deposit has not been approved at this time."

The mining industry has come to rely on imaging devices to monitor and record all kinds of activities. We use them to measure, improve the process, ensure security, increase production and automate machinery. Cameras can be installed in locations most people wouldn?t want to live and be our ?eyes? to record the events at that location. This paper discusses digital imaging, the equipment, methods, techniques and information that can be learned from digital devices used in mining operations. The guy who said ?a picture is worth a thousand words? probably understated it. Images are the perfect way to document conditions before, after and even during mining activities. Today?s wide choice of cameras, camcorders and other digital devices allow us to record most activities and events. The technology is advancing at a high rate. Digital cameras and camcorders are marvels of technology with high resolution optics, compact size, automatic time and date stamp, great battery life, shutters to freeze motion and computers to auto focus and eliminate jitter (image stabilization). Add to this the economical price and ease of use and everyone in this industry should be aware of the possibilities.

The backfill system at Cleveland Potash?s Boulby Mine places waste filter cake underground in the form of a high concentration slurry in worked out areas of the mine reducing the mine?s environmental impact. The backfill system delivers slurry approximately 1100 m down the mine and up to 11 000 m horizontally underground. The Boulby backfill system is unique in that the placed backfill waste is not used for the usual purposes such as support, pillar extraction or reducing ventilation requirements. It was specifically implemented for environmental reasons. This influenced the design and resulted in some unique features of the system. A previous paper (Wilkins et al., 2004) described the design and commissioning of the backfill system. This paper describes the operational experience with the backfill system and backfill placement since commissioning in May 2003 and looks at lessons that can be applied in other backfill designs.

The Red Lake Mine is located approximately 600 km northwest of Thunder Bay. This 545 tpd (600 tons/day) underground narrow vein gold operation is set to produce in excess of 14.8 tonnes (475,000 ounces) in 2001 at a cash operating cost below 75 U$/oz. The high-grade nature of this deposit (>55 g/t or >1.6 opt) coupled with its complex geological environment and relatively deep location dictated the choice of a very selective primary mining method, Mechanized Overhand Cut and Fill. In addition to geological challenges, mine design issues such as material handling, ground stability and requirements for yieldable ground support are also discussed in this paper.

"Control of fugitive dust has become increasingly important in the mining industry both from a health and safety and environmental standpoint. Mining operations in particular have required improved fugitive dust control due to recent lowering of the allowable airborne silica concentration to which workers can be exposed. Experience has now proven that the implementation of a surfactant based chemical dust suppression system can enhance existing mechanical dust control methods resulting in much more efficient control of fugitive dust.The Porcupine Joint Venture (Dome Mine) utilizes dry secondary crushing and screening that makes it particularly prone to fugitive dust emissions. A variety of potential dust control systems were evaluated and this led to the installation of a surfactant based water spray system to augment the existing mechanical dust collection systems.A great deal was learned through the implementation of this system. This paper describes the entire process, from testing, system design and installation, through optimization and standardization of operation. In addition a variety of problems were identified, and innovative solutions were provided. Also, the metallurgical impacts on down stream processing are highlighted. Finally, a full discussion of overall results including a discussion of the relationship between silica and total dust concentrations is included."

"Although diamond mining is a relative newcomer to the Canadian mining industry, with the first diamond mine coming on stream in 1998, Canada is already a significant producer of high quality diamonds. This paper will review diamond production trends and highlight some of the projects currently under development, which have the potential to enhance Canada’s role as a significant diamond producer.Diamond recovery plants generally incorporate well-established mineral processing and recovery techniques, with issues such as product security, cut-off sizes, and diamond preservation becoming important considerations when developing process flowsheets. A diamond processing plant must achieve three key objectives, namely:• Liberation of the diamonds from the host rock;• Separation of the heavy minerals, which include the diamonds, from the host rock;• Recovery of the diamonds from the heavy mineral concentrates.Processing technologies and equipment commonly utilized in diamond processing plants will be reviewed and some of the significant issues associated with each option briefly discussed.Typical process flowsheets will be presented.Finally, an overview of De Beers’ Victor diamond project, located in northern Ontario, will be provided. This potentially significant diamond producer is currently at a pre-feasibility stage of development.DIAMONDS IN CANADAWorld Diamond ProductionCommercial diamond mining commenced in earnest with the discovery of the Kimberley diamondfields in South Africa in the late 1800s, and this resulted in a dramatic increase in the supply of diamonds. As can be seen from figure 1, world diamond production, mainly from South Africa, Angola, Congo, and Namibia, remained relatively constant through the early 1900s until the development of the large Russian kimberlite pipes in the 1950s. Production increased again in the 1960s and 70s with the development of the Botswana mines, but the most significant increase in global production came from the Argyle mine in Australia, which came on stream in 1983 and produced a peak of almost 43 million carats in 1994, representing approximately 40% of the world market. Production from Argyle has since fallen-off as grades have declined and the strip ratio has increased with the deepening of the open pit."

"Galmoy Mine, owned by Arcon Mines Limited, has operated since 1997, and is one of three operating lead/zinc mines in Ireland. Changes in ore type starting in mid 2002 created challenges to metallurgical operations at Galmoy. This resulted in unacceptable lead and zinc flotation performance, which prompted initiation of a formal plant review and a subsequent stabilization programme. This involved a structured review of operational practices, development of a new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) which in turn led to significant changes in process control equipment needs in conjunction with extension of zinc flotation cell residence time.This paper will describe the metallurgy of the Galmoy operation. Reasons for the poor metallurgy experienced in 2002 will be described, as well as the solutions identified to overcome these problems. By the second quarter of 2003, these solutions had been implemented and recoveries had risen to record levels.INTRODUCTIONGeneralGalmoy Concentrator is located in County Kilkenny (Refer to Figure 1 below) and was constructed during 1996 and commissioned in 1997.The concentrator at Galmoy had been designed initially to treat 650,000 tonnes per annum of primarily CW ore type. The main mineral of economic significance was sphalerite (Typically 10 to 11% Zn) with some minor galena (0.7%Pb) in a dolomite (Magnesium Carbonate) host rock.The only other competing sulphide mineral was pyrite (Circa 3 to 5% Fe in Mill Feed. This CW ore type predominated the first 6 years of production, but in August 2002, the ore mineralogy changed due to significantly higher levels of pyrite rich G ore body being blended in with CW ore."

"The nickel ores of Sudbury contain substantial amounts of the gangue mineral pyrrhotite (Fe7S&) which causes certain diflculties in the milling of these ores. This paper proposes a process called “magnetoflotation” as an effective means of dealing with pyrrhotite. The method reduces the pyrrhotite content of concentrates by applying a magneticjield on the path product as it leaves the flotation cell.Successful performance of magnetoflotation requires the optimization of several variables. In this study, three of the variables (air flowrate, collector concentration, pother concentration) were investigated by Box- Wilson experimental design, and others (magnet speed, grind size, pulp density, flotation time) were examined individually. The process was tested on a Falconbridge nickel ore, assaying 1.92% Ni, and under the best operating conditions, a concentrate was obtained with 13.56% Ni grade and 74.32% recovery in a single step. Further improvements to grade and recovery were possible by cleaning and scavenging. The same ore was also tested with conventional methods for comparison, and results indicated that magnetoflotation performed better.INTRODUCTION“Magnetoflotation” refers to the process of carrying out magnetic separation and flotation simultaneously within the same device, and is intended to prevent magnetic minerals from reporting to the froth products while non-magnetic minerals are being floated. Typical cases where this method might be beneficial include the processing of magnetite and nickel ores. Its use on magnetite ores has been reported elsewhere [Yalcin, 1992; Yalcin, 19931. This paper describes its application to nickel ores, more specifically to the nickel ore of Falconbridge Limited in Sudbury."

"This paper demonstrates the selection of grinding circuit technology for a number of recent projects including discussion of the key drivers and the role of energy efficiency. Decreasing head grades combined with a strong and sustained increase in operating costs has forced miners to examine increased project size, increased equipment capacity and efficiency improvements in order to reduce their unit operating costs and improve overall project economics. Comminution energy consumption, safety and capital cost considerations play a critical role in the success of projects. This paper presents some key guidelines for a successful and cost effective comminution circuit design and includes a case study on three projects, outlining the issues and the drivers which led to the ultimate circuit selection and the critical role that energy efficiency played.IntroductionComminution circuits for minerals processing are selected based on their suitability and efficiency in reducing run-of-mine ore to the desired feed size for the downstream process. The input material (ore) properties and downstream process requirements are the key determinants and there are standard approaches for each circumstance.The minerals processing industry has been a fast adaptor of efficiency improvements based on increasing capacity of equipment (e.g. trucks, crushers, mills, pumps) but less successful in adapting radically new technologies that disrupt incumbent flowsheets or processes.The installed power of grinding mills has increased linearly over the past 25 years (Meka & Lane, 2010) and pumps and classification equipment have kept pace. The autogenous grinding (AG) and semi- autogenous grinding (SAG) mills displaced stage crushing as a dominant method of coarse rock breakage in many applications causing crusher manufactures to increase the capacity of cone crushers to meet the competitive demand.Examples of new comminution technology in the 20th and 21st centuries are the development and adoption of cyclone classification in the 1940s (Newtech, 2016), AG milling in the late 1950s, vertical grinding mills in the 1980s, high pressure grinding rolls (HPGRs) also in the 1980s and ultrafine milling technology in the 1990s (Meka & Lane, 2010)."

"Comparative tests of the conventional Turam survey configuration and an alternative configuration called the Tx-parallel configuration were conducted at the McClean uranium deposit in northern Saskatchewan. Both configurations detected the known conductors at the site but the alternative configuration demonstrated its particular effectiveness in the reconnaissance role. This effectiveness results from the fact that the length of Tx-parallel traversesis controlled only by the length ofthe transmitter and not by its power. In addition, the field strength along a Tx-parallel traverse is uniform unless the traverse approaches the end of the transmitter. This freedom from a strong gradient of the primary field along a Tx-parallel traverse eliminates the gradient-induced anomaly shifts which are common in conventional Turam operations. The locations of each of the McClean conductors, that were obtained from the Tx-parallel profiles, werein better agreement with the locations known from drilling than were the locations obtained from the conventional profiles. However, the conventional profiles gave better estimates of the conductance of the targets.The results obtained over the McClean conductors indicate that current gathering has a strong influence on Tx-parallel results with consequent unpredictable influence on depth and conductance estimates. However, the depth estimates obtained from the Tx-parallel data appear to be in good agreement with the known depth of the McClean south conductor. The Txparallel results provide shallow estimates of the depth of the McClean north conductor which suggest that the fracture zone above the graphitic conductor is a significant conductor as was also suggested by earlier VLF surveys.Comparison with the wide range of published geophysical test surveys for the McClean site showed that apart from the work required to lay the transmitter, the Tx-parallel mode of operation of a Turam exploration system is operationally very similar to a moving source Slingram type of survey. At the McClean test site, it provided the same depth of exploration as a conventionally deployed fixed loop transmitter."

"The development of Galfan, a new generation 95% zinc-5% aluminum-mischmetal alloy coating for steel, offers opportunities for greater fabrication flexibility and upgraded corrosion performance in automotive applications. The formability of Galfan is equivalent to that of electrogalvanized steel, based on laboratory tests and automotive component fabrication. Corrosion resistance of Galfan exceeds that of hot dip and electrogalvanized, including performance in automotive industry tests. Automotive production applications for deep drawn and stamped components in France and Germany are based on the ability to meet dual performance requirements for upgraded formability and corrosion resistance. The first U.S. Galfan application was on 1985 model Ford cars and light trucks for transmission oil cooler lines which has now expanded into a number of power steering tubing uses. IntroductionContinuing requirements for improved vehicle performance coupled with the ever present need for reduced cost have spawned the development of a number of new coated steel products. Among this new generation of coated steels is Gaifan™, a 95070 zinc-Solo aluminum-mischmetal hot dip alloy coating. Galfan exhibits particular promise for automotive use based on broad fabrication advantages and upgraded product performance(I ),The unique characteristic of Galfan is the key combination of greatly improved formability with much longer corrosion life. Galfan provides significantly better formability than any other hot dip coating. Testing shows that formability is limited primarily by the steel substrate to which the Galfan coating is applied. Galfan exhibits excellent resistance to flaking and microcracking during commercial forming operations. The result is the elimination of unnoticed damage to the coating which would show up later as premature rusting on the finished product."

"A computerized cost estimating program developed with the use of the Lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheet program has produced dramatic savings in preparing estimates for operating costs, equipment fleet size and manpower requirements for underground mines.The program is used by Dynatec to support its consulting engineering projects, particularly feasibility studies. The &apos;first principles&apos; approach is used to prepare detailed estimates under direct labour and supplies categories and maintenance costs for each mining operation . "Inco Limited has operated aluminum mine shaft conveyances since 1968. Aluminum conveyances are used where the hoisting in system requires lightweight conveyances to maintain the hoist rope safety factors and mine hoist rope pulls as dictated by government regulations. Inco Ltd. currently has 20 skips (including spares) operating in the Ontario Division mines. The main problems encountered are with galvanic corrosion between dissimilar metals and metal fatigue. This paper will highlight some of the problems encountered and illustrate methods utilized to overcome the problems and improve the conveyances performance.IntroductionAluminum mine shaft conveyances have been in use at Inco Limited&apos;s various Sudbury district mines since 1968. All of the conveyances currently in use are skips used for hoisting mine ore and rock. Inco had an aluminum quick change Kimberley-type skip and cage in operation at its Totten Mine in the early 1970s, but this mine is no longer in operation and no further comment will be made.The primary reason why aluminum conveyances are chosen over conventional steel conveyances is because of their light weight. Typically an aluminum conveyance will weigh about 60% to 70% of a steel conveyance of similar design. The lighter weight conveyances will allow higher payloads to be used and still maintain the statutory hoist rope factors of safety. It must be remembered that increasing the payload will increase the power required to raise the load and the hoist will have to have the necessary horsepower for the increased payload or the system will be overloaded.The front dump (Rola-chute) skips are of the bail-less design, i.e. the box structure also supports the load and has the shaft guide shoes attached directly to the side of the box structure. The Copper Cliff North Mine and South Mine skips have a joint in the centre of the conveyance and are installed in the shaft in two sections and connected with pins. This feature allows very long (42 ft) skips to be used in areas where a one-piece bail-type conveyance could not be installed. It is not practical to make sectionalized bail-type conveyances"

"Introduction It has long been recognized by the hot-dip galvanizing industry that the characteristics of the galvanized coating can be influenced significantly by steel and pro cessing variables. Probably the variable of most concern to galvan izers today is steel chemistry. More specifically, the problem is the excessive reactivity of continuously-cast, silicon-bearing steels. In the past, structural steels processed by general galvanizers were in the low-to-medium ca rbon category and contained silicon at either low impurity levels (as with rimmed steels), or less than approximately 0.10% (as with semi-killed steels). The structures of the coatings produced on such steels are characterized by dense, compact layers of delta and zeta iron-zinc alloy phases and a distinct outer layer of eta zinc, which usually imparts a bright shiny appearance to the coating. The presence of silicon in steel, above the so-called semi-killed levels, is known to cause marked stru ctural changes in galvanized coatings. Such coatings are characterized by a relatively thin delta layer, a thick , coarse zeta layer and frequently an absence of the eta layer. The eta phase, comprising zinc which is carried out of the bath during withdrawal of the work, can be consumed by the continuation of the coating reactions until its temperature drops to the solidification point. This results in a dull grey and often mottled surface instead of the usually bright metallic appearance. These galvanized coatings are usually much thicker than coating specifications requ ire and they are usually more brittle and have poor adhesion to the steel. "This paper will describe how cultivator shanks are made in one company and how the manufacturing was studied with a view to increasing product consistency and reducing manufacturing cost. The product: which is used extensively in the agriculture industry, was analyzed to determine which geometric parameters optimized its design and whether there was justification for the great variety of styles and shapes that are available in the market. Finally, an extensive series of field trials were undertaken which showed that it is advantageous to the manufacturer to be better aware of the loads and forces that his product is subjected to by another industry.IntroductionStelco maintains a Research Group for its Western Region operations headquartered in Edmonton, Alberta. Because of the small staff, a location that is isolated with respect to its Burlington, Ontario centre and a diverse set of processes and products, a university relationship has developed which may be different from that which would be developed at a larger integrated Steel Works. This paper outlines the type of cooperative studies carried out by Stelco Inc. in Edmonton and the University of Alberta. .To meet the research needs covering a wide variety of steelmaking processes and steel products produced in Edmonton would require more staff and equipment than the sales volume in the West justifies. The gap is filled by cooperation with university personnel. This cooperation has provided these benefits to Stelco Inc.:• access to specialized test equipment and a trained staff to operate it; and• assistance from experts in the areas of product testing and problem solving.Moreover, the close proximity of the university to the plant allows frequent meetings and ensures that practical solutions are developed and implemented. A good example of the ongoing university I industry relationship developed is the joint work on improving cultivator shanks."
