Experience and research have shown that an effective way to reduce structural damage from explosions is to provide adequate pressure-relief vents in the walls of equipment and buildings within which explosions might occur. In general, free or unrestricted openings represent the most efficient type of vent. However, in many manufacturing operations it is impractical to use free vents, and it becomes necessary to cover the openings with diaphragms or blow-out disks, hinged panels, or other devices, in order to give protection against weather changes, to prevent the efflux of dusts or vapors from equipment during normal operations, or for other reasons. A few data on the pressure-relieving capacities of hinged panels and a paper diaphragm were published in Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 3924, which covered the first phase of the dust-explosion venting study made by the Bureau. The present report describes recent experiments that were made to determine the relative effectiveness of an unrestricted vent and 22 types of closures, including various paper, cloth, and metal-foil diaphragms, hinged doors or panels, and several kinds of scored and unscored glass panes. The tests showed that many of the vent closures were effective in releasing the explosions rapidly during their incipient stage, so that the development of destructive pressures was prevented. Vents of this type should prove useful in safeguarding industrial equipment from severe explosion damage. The experiments disclosed that the venting capacities of the diaphragms are approximately inversely proportional to their static bursting strengths.

The Frémont test for measuring the energy consumed in breaking a notched bar of steel is not so well known in this country as it deserves to be. The test specimen used in this test is about # by 6 by about 16 in., notched with a hack saw on the lower side to cause the piece to break at a fixed point. A weight of 10 kg. falling 4 m., and provided with a knife or chisel which strikes the specimen, breaks the test piece by impact. The residual force in the falling weight after it has broken the specimen is recorded by a suitable device, and the difference between the total energy and the residual energy of the weight (in kilogrammeters) is the force consumed in breaking the specimen. An experience of several years with the Frémont testing machine has shown its great value in readily detecting brittleness not revealed by tensile testing or slow bending testing. In this paper it is proposed to discuss (1) the supersensitiveness of the test as applied to cast steel and (2) its value in revealing the effect of heat treatment under certain conditions. In testing coupons cut from castings heat treated by quenching and annealing, attention was drawn to the wide variations in the value of the Frémont test of specimens cut from different parts of the coupon. The latter was of the form and dimensions shown in Fig. 1, and Fremont test pieces were cut from two parts of this coupon, marked A and B in that figure. In this study, the effect of cations, Na+ and Mg2+, in saline water on copper flotation in the presence of calcium bentonite was investigated. It was found that as the concentration of NaCl was increased, the copper recovery initially decreased and then increased to above 99%, while the copper grade initially increased and then decreased. In contrast, as the concentration ofMgCl2 was increased, the copper recovery continuously increased, while the copper grade continuously decreased. The variation of copper recovery and grade was mainly attributed to the synergistic effect of pulp rheology and flotation solution chemistry. The underpinning mechanisms are the compressing electrical double layer and ion-exchange interaction between saline water and bentonite, which occur at the same time. Using salinewater slightly affected the pulp rheologywith a decrease in copper recovery at low NaCl concentration. Increasing the concentration of cations in saline water might even facilitate the flowing out of exchangeable cations, especially divalent cations, from the interlayer space of bentonite to the solution, resulting in the decrease of copper grade at high salt concentration.

Discussion of the paper of John H. Hall, presented at the New York. Meeting, October, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 79, July, 1913, pp. 1247 to 1256. WILLIAM 'R. WEBSTER, Philadelphia, Pa.:-I would like to call ,attention to the fact that the results of the ordinary tension and bend tests do not always give us the information we want even if we figure out the amount of work done. You want a bending test of sufficient width and full thickness. In the case of eyebars, for instance, I have had experience with a 10- by 1-in. eyebar which gave perfectly good results in a full-size test of the finished bar. The 10- by 1.5-in. and 10- by 1.75-in. eyebars from the same heats-of steel were absolutely worthless in full-size tests. The narrow bending tests from all these bars gave good results. Bat after going into the matter fully, we found that if pieces about 3 in. wide and full thickness were used for the. cold bending tests, the heavier material would not stand this test, but failed. That is, in order to check the quality of the rolled bar you should have a wide piece of full thickness for cold bending, as the narrow pieces give misleading results. J. E. Y. :-I would like to ask if there have been any tests made to compare the results of Charpy tests with the true dynamic test similar .to the Wohler test, except that the piece is subjected to a tensile or compressive stress and to alternating stresses in addition, at the same time. This seems to me to approach more nearly than any other test to the conditions of actual service. where the piece is under a fixed initial stress plus a highly variable and often alternating stress. Some tests were made on this plan in England within a year or two. The test piece was Subjected to either a tensile or compressive stress of known amount and simultaneously to alternating stresses in addition. Such a. test as this gives information which we cannot get by a tensile test or even from the tensile strength multiplied by an. elongation. Such tests, however, are exceedingly tedious and require long periods of time in order to obtain valuable results. If material could be subjected to these dynamic tests and the same material to the. Charpy shock test, and if some reasonable qualitative relation could be established between the results of the two tests, then we could assume that the shock test, which is so simple and easy to make, was a measurably accurate test of the dynamic qualities of the material. It has been said that safety promotion passes through four stages--the band-playing, the machine-guarding, the protective equipment, and finally the educational stage; the last is the most important in the development of the safety program. It has been estimated that only 15 percent of accidents can be pre- vented by machine guarding and protective equipment; the other 85 percent must be stopped by the safety efforts of the individual workers and their supervisory officials, and one of the fundamentals of safety work is the education of workers to develop safety consciousness or safety mindedness. One way of educating men to think about safety is by the use of posters. Safety engineers at the Calumet 2 Hecla mines in Michigan have been conduct- ing a safety contest among the men by the use of posters of an unusual type in addition to those usually employed to illustrate bad practices and to display the number of days without a lost-time accident. The first requisite for the success of the safety poster is a good artist or draftsman; in the poster contest instituted at the Calumet & Hecla mines two sheets were prepared illustrating various conditions in the slope workings, including a large number of unsafe practices. The object of the contest was to get the men to think about safety through criticism of the unsafe conditions displayed on the posters. The following notice accom- panied the posters:

GRIM, CHAIRMAN-Has anyone a particularly fruitful point to make or question to ask on any of the papers that have been presented at the two sessions held on Monday and one held this morning? GENESIS OF ENDELLITE T. S. LOVERING-I think we are all a little bit embarrassed when we are asked if we have any particularly fruitful point for discussion; I just have a point. I believe that yesterday Bates said that he had found endellite in only hydrothermally altered rocks-he did not find it in sedimentary rocks-but this morning I heard Victor Allen say something about it as the normal product of weathering, and I am confused. My question concerns the genesis of endellite. I want to know whether endellite is found as a normal product of weathering. I understood from the paper by Bates that it was not a product of weathering and in the paper by Victor Allen* endellite was said to be a product of normal weathering. Did I misinterpret these two papers? T. F. BATES-I did not intend to state or imply that endellite is formed only under hydrothermal conditions. We have been studying the North Carolina deposits extensively and I feel that they illustrate very well the result of normal weathering processes acting on pegmatitic material. The resulting clay seems to be largely endellite or halloysite, almost to the exclusion of kaolinite. I may have misled you in the statement I made toward the end of my talk, to the effect that of all the kaolinic clays we have investigated with the electron microscope, we have not yet found halloysite or endellite in samples from clay deposits that are definitely sedimentary in origin. Visando garantir o nível de qualidade dos produtos e o controle do processamento do aço para atender aos requisitos dos clientes e das normas técnicas aplicáveis e manter-se competitivo no mercado de aços longos com redução contínua de custos, um dos grandes desafios das aciarias elétricas é promover o aumento do rendimento de suas ferro-ligas melhorando ao mesmo tempo os processos de desoxidação e dessulfuração, além da limpeza interna do banho. Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito da adição de carbureto de cálcio durante o vazamento das corridas do aço 1026-D nestas variáveis, através da análise estatística e termodinâmica de dados de corridas experimentais, com e sem adição de carbureto de cálcio. Foi demonstrado que a adição desse insumo melhora de forma significativa os parâmetros metalúrgicos de qualidade do material e reduz o custo de transformação para a fabricação desse produto através da redução do consumo de ferro-ligas.

The movement of hydrogen in two-phase Zircaloy-2 under the influence of a thermal gradient was studied in specimens of cylindrical geometry. A gross displacement of hydrogen toward the cooler regions of the specimen was observed with consequent copious precipitation of 6-ztrconium (ZrH) there. The kinetics of the diffusion are analyzed and discussed. X HE temperature-gradient redistribution of hydrogen in a-Zircaloy-2 has been treated both theoretically and experimentally Hydrogen moves toward the cold side of the temperature gradient until a steady state has been established; tendency for further hydrogen movement because of temperature differences is nullified by the tendency to move in the reverse direction because of the concentration gradient. The steady state condition is described by the equation in which iV is the concentration of hydrogen at a point in the specimen corresponding to absolute temperature T, R is the gas constant,k is a constant of integration, and Q is a parameter called the heat of transport, characteristic Of the particular system. The value of Q has been determined for hydrogen in Zircaloy-2 by several investigators, using Eq. [11. There is considerable variation in the results, the cause of which has not been resolved; reported values lie in the range 3 to 6 kcal per mole. The physical situation for two-phase thermal migration is much more complex. The -phase boundary for the solubility of hydrogen in Zircaloy-2 ranges from a concentration of 25 ppm at 200°C to a maximum of about 600 ppm at 550°C.4a Thus, if the concentration of hydrogen in Zircaloy-2 is sufficiently great (>600 ppm), the specimen will be entirely two-phase, consisting of a matrix of a-Zircaloy-2 surrounding particles of zirconium hydride. At time zero, with a temperature gradient imposed, the relative amounts of hydride and a-phase in each infinite-simally thin isothermal section of the specimen can be determined from the phase diagram by the lever rule. Moreover, the concentration of hydrogen in the matrix phase varies from point to point, following the a solubility line. Over most of this temperature range (<450°C) 6 phase, Fig. 3, has a constant concentration.5 The diffusion rate toward the cold side should be governed by 1) the slope of the a solubility line and 2) the temperature gradient, The extra complication of two-phase thermal diffusion lies in the fact that migration of hydrogen would leave the a-phase concentration gradient unaffected, since it is fixed at any temperature only by the solubility; gross concentration changes would reflect only the relative amounts of matrix and hydride, which could vary continuously at every point. Problems caused by water discharge from surface mine ventilation shafts can be significant and are usually unforseen. The discharged water is often hyper-saline or acidic and can cause environmental degradation over a wide radius. It can also lead to recurring power pole fires and primary fan breakdowns. A range of solutions to the water discharge problem has been implemented in many Australian mines. In most cases the solutions have been ad hoc, with the overall cost and effectiveness varying tremendously. This paper reviews and contrasts the practicality and effectiveness of the various available remedial options.

The development of slurries of coal and water as a boiler fuel replacing No. 6 fuel oil has been actively pursued at the Atlantic Research Corporation since 1976. Funding for this effort has been provided by the U.S. Department of Energy, the Electric Power Research Institute, and by corporate funds. The name ARC-COALTM has been selected for these slurries. Stable coal-water slurries with bone-dry coal loadings between 62% and 77% have been prepared, evaluated rheologically, and successfully burned in an experimental furnace without the assistance of other fuels. The advantages and properties of these slurries, including combustion results, are reviewed. Also discussed is the pilot line used for processing barrel quantities of fuel and a pilot plant capable of processing 600 bbl/day, currently being designed.

surgimento de fases intermetálicas em aços é matéria de grande interesse devido ao caráter nocivo que elas podem conferir às propriedades mecânicas do material. No presente trabalho, foi estudado o efeito do surgimento da fase sigma em um aço inoxidável duplex através de modelamento numérico-computacional. A microestrutura duplex foi obtida via simulação, sendo, então utilizada como matriz para a nucleação e crescimento da fase sigma, também via simulação. O método do Cone Causal foi utilizado para o desenvolvimento da microestrutura e os resultados foram comparados com a metodologia da cinética formal de JMAK para fins de validação do modelo. Os resultados da simulação permitem obter, através da Regra das Misturas, predições sobre as propriedades mecânicas do material, no caso, o limite de resistência à tração, que foi comparado com os dados encontrados na literatura. Foi possível constatar o aumento do limite de resistência à tração para maiores frações volumétricas de sigma, o que traz como resultado a diminuição da ductilidade para o aço.

Vários resíduos gerados nos processo siderúrgico são fonte de ferro e podem ser reciclados e reintegrados de volta ao ciclo produtivo do ferro. Exemplos incluem pós de coletores e despoeiramento, carepas e lamas. Estes materiais são geralmente classificados como rejeitos e são descartados em aterros a um alto custo, mas adquirem um valor significante quando reciclados e reutilizados apropriadamente. O presente estudo consiste em demostrar a viabilidade da utilização destes resíduos em um processo de mini sinterização, plantas de sinterização produzindo até 1 milhão de toneladas por ano. O produto obtido apresenta propriedades químicas e físicas adequadas para carregamento direto no alto-forno, para utilização como nucleante na sinterização, ou como refrigerante no convertedor. O balanço do zinco e dos álcalis é de extrema importância para viabilizar um sínter final com qualidade requerida e será analisado neste estudo. Conclui-se que a utilização dos resíduos citados é economicamente viável e o estudo de caso apresentado neste trabalho comprova o benefício com retorno significativo.

El sistema presentado en este artículo actúa como un digestor al transformar las moléculas de carbono y otras sustancias en compuestos menos contaminantes. Se utilizó una mezcla de cianuro disuelto en agua como muestra de ensayo —procedente de aguas de una mina—, que se sometió al componente radiante de plasma, y se estudió la energía generada actuando sobre la purificación y transformación de las muestras.

"In this paper, an alternative beneficiation process was developed to recover nickel minerals from low-grade weathered ores. The studied sample, 0.3% Ni grade, is essentially composed of nickel sulfides (pyrrhotite and pentlandite); magnetite and silicates (mostly talc and amphibolites) are the primary gangue minerals. The particle size distribution was controlled using a grinding operation to avoid producing an excess of fine particles by overgrinding. The sample underwent a grinding step for the fine degree of liberation. The slimes (-20 ?m) were removed via two desliming stages in hydrocyclones (diameters of 1.5" and 2"); the ground material, which was classified in a range of (-150+20) ?m, was processed by column flotation in three different stages: rougher flotation for magnesium silicates, rougher flotation for sulfides, and cleaner flotation for sulfides, using pilot flotation columns (2" and 6" in diameter and 20 ft high). The goal of using the preliminary magnesium silicate flotation step was to remove hydrophobic minerals (mostly talc) that would float naturally with the sulfides, which would decrease the Ni grade in the concentrate, as well as to reduce the MgO content because this compound is considered harmful in metallurgical processes when a grade greater than 9% is used. The final concentrate obtained in the cleaner flotation step reached up to 2% Ni and 7.0% MgO. The global and flotation recoveries in the process were approximately 30% and 60%, respectively, due to the losses of Ni during the desliming process. Despite this low global recovery, the adopted beneficiation process can be considered an interesting alternative to produce nickel concentrate from tailings or waste materials."

The demand for phosphate will continue into the future, because phosphate is currently irreplaceable as a plant nutrient and in many chemical applications. Phosphate is not recycled, so the supply must be replenished through a process of mining and purification. Numerous microbial isolates. obtained from the environment were screened find those which demonstrated the greatest promise of solubilizing PO4 from the ore of interest. Screening was accomplished in a step wise manner an agar plate bioassay, shake flask studies, and semi continuous growth conditions. It was found that with the proper conditions of nutrient supply and solution pH; the bacteria and. fungus used in the semicontinuous process were able to solubilize in excess of 80% of an Idaho rock phosphate ore (RP) within nine days. A significant amount of solubilization occurred within the first six days. There was a &apos;reasonable correlation between the occurrence of soluble Ca and PO.4 during the processing of the RP thus providing evidence that the RP was being disintegrated by the organisms. In all cases, HPLC analysis of the solutions in which PO4 had been. extracted from RP showed that organic acids, which have been implicated as the mechanism of solubilization, were present.

Pillar design is the first line of defense against rock falls—the greatest single safety hazard faced by underground coal miners in the United States and abroad. To help advance the state of the art in this fundamental mining science, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health organized the Second International Workshop on Coal Pillar Mechanics and Design. The workshop was held in Vail, CO, on June 6,1999, in association with the 37th U.S. Rock Mechanics Symposium. The proceedings include 15 papers from leading ground control specialists in the United States, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, and the Republic of South Africa. The papers address the entire range of issues associated with coal pillars and have a decidedly practical flavor. Topics include numerical modeling, empirical design formulas based on case histories, field measurements, and post failure mechanics.

Judging from the list of papers to be presented over the next three days, the Symposium promises to provide a most valuable addition to our existing knowledge base in what is now an extremely active area of R&D investigations. Whilst we have obviously come a long way since Sir Henry Bessemer's pioneering experiments of the mid-19th century, there is still much for us to learn.Most importantly, the Symposium offers a further opportunity to acknowledge the many significant technical contributions made in this field by the Organising Committee's special guest, Professor Howard Worner - one of this country's most respected research leaders.When first approached to give this talk I had two areas of concern. Firstly, I was not entirely clear just what injection metallurgy was meant to cover. How should the overall scope of this particular subject be defined?My second concern related to Howard Worner himself - a man for whom I have the highest personal regard and who, in fact, played a most influential role in respect of shaping my own career. Having already spoken about Howard's achievements on earlier occasions, I wondered what I could sensibly add.Notwithstanding these personal reservations, I am delighted to be here with you this morning. If my thoughts on the meaning and scope of injection metallurgy appear to be slightly off-course, and if Howard should perhaps recognise some repetition in my remarks, then I hope I can be forgiven."

Os minérios limoníticos de níquel apresentam na sua composição metais como ferro, níquel e cobalto, sendo o primeiro o elemento majoritário. A presença majoritária de ferro prejudica a separação dos demais metais que possuem interesse comercial. Para remoção do ferro, técnicas hidrometalúrgicas são usadas. A extração por solventes é uma técnica com foco na separação seletiva de metais. Neste trabalho, foi preparada uma solução sintética baseada nas concentrações dos metais presentes na lixiviação de um minério limonítico de níquel. A solução foi colocada em contato com o extratante Cyanex 272. Este extratante é conhecido pela sua seletividade ao ferro em valores de pH próximos a 2,0. As amostras foram analisadas utilizando a técnica de Espectroscopia de Fluorescência de Raios X por Energia Dispersiva (EDX). Após concluídos os ensaios foi encontrado que durante a extração do ferro, o cobalto foi coextraído junto, mesmo em pHs entre 0,5 e 2,0, indicando que a presença do ferro altera o comportamento do cobalto.

The importance of semikilled steel as a high tonnage grade has long been recognized. The increasing severity of the applications for which semikilled steel is used makes it desirable to obtain further information regarding the features of open hearth practice and ingot structure that can affect steel performance in subsequent rolling and fabricating operations. Accordingly, an investigation is being carried out studying the structure of various types of semikilled steel ingots. This paper reviews some of the observations made and information gathered in this investigation. By definition, semikilled steel may be considered to include all nonrimming steels in which the natural shrinkage occurring during ingot solidification is offset to an appreciable degree by gas formation. Accordingly, this type of steel includes the entire range intermediate between rimmed and fully killed steel. The resultant ingot structures range from those of steels that have been capped to suppress a weak rimming action to those steels that have been killed in the furnace or ladle to the extent that no mold deoxidizer is required. A survey reported to the 1946 -AIME Open Hearth Conference&apos; reviewed the practices being used at 28 major plants for the deoxidation of semikilled steel. It was found that most plants divide the deoxidizing additions between the ladle and the mold—many of the plants adding only minor amounts of deoxidizer to the bath or none at all. Silicon, aluminum and titanium were the only elements used for ladle and mold deoxidation. Mold deoxidizers were added as capping additions or as uniformly fed additions. Several practices were reported in which the steel was deoxidized in the ladle to the extent that little or no mold deoxidation was needed. No reference was made to grades capped by using special mold designs or special closures over the top of molds. .Accordingly, specific examples of this type of practice will not be considered in this paper. It appeared from this survey of deoxidation practice that semikilled steel can be divided into three types, namely, capped semikilled, in which aluminum is added near the end of pour or after shut-off, intermediate semikilled steels, in which aluminum is fed uniformly throughout the pour, and semikilled steels requiring no mold deoxidation. In an attempt to cover the ingot structures obtained by the range of practices reported in the preceding survey, three series of experimental heats were made using increasing amounts of aluminum, silicon and titanium for ladle deoxidizers. The ladle deoxidizers were added as stick aluminum, 50 pct ferrosilicon and 20 pct ferrotitanium (4 pct carbon), respectively. Two methods of studying ingot structures were used. Ingots were removed from production, burned longitudinally and machined to allow observation of the central pipe and coarse blowholes.
