The Isa Mine of Mount Isa Mines Limited produces 2.6 million tonnes of silver-lead-zinc ore annually from sub level open stopes of which approximately 40% comes from the narrow Racecourse orebodies below 15 level.Geologically the stoping environment is complicated by highly fissile shale hangingwalls and below 17 level by a high stress regime.The realization that major hangingwall failures and generally poor ground conditions could lead to serious dilution problems, and ultimately production shortfalls, prompted investigations into the use of low strength explosives.

Refractory gold concentrates often contain submicroscopic gold that is encapsulated within the crystal matrix of iron sulfide minerals, such as pyrite, pyrrhotite and arsenopyrite. To recover the gold, the host mineral must generally be broken down chemically by oxidative processes, such as roasting, pressure oxidation or bacterial leaching, which expose the gold for subsequent recovery by leaching in cyanide solution. The focus of attention in these pretreatment processes is usually the oxidation of the sulfides to elemental sulfur, sulfur dioxide gas or sulfate ions. Less attention is paid to the deportment of iron and the changes in its oxidation state, although this can have a profound effect on gold and silver liberation, as well as downstream operating costs. Iron sulfide minerals break down completely during pressure oxidation, and dissolve in the sulfuric acid solution that is gener-ated from oxidation of the sulfides. This dissolution liberates the tiny gold particles that were originally trapped in the sulfide crystals, and gold recovery during subsequent cyanidation is usually very high (>95%). Iron goes into solution in the oxidation process, initially as ferrous sulfate, but this compound is rapidly oxidized to ferric sulfate, which then hydrolyzes and reprecipitates. The form of the precipitate varies depending on the operating conditions in the autoclave and the presence of certain metal cations. When the acidity in the autoclave is quite low (<20 g/L H2SO4) and the temperature is high (>200°C), the formation of hematite is favored. When the acidity is high (>20 g/L H2SO4) and the temperature is relatively low (160 to 200°C), the formation of basic iron sulfate is favored. If the ore or the leach solution contains significant levels of certain cations (such as Na+, K+, NH4+, Ag+ or Pb2+) and the acidity is high (>20 g/L H2SO4), jarosite compounds are favored. Hematite is the desired iron product in the autoclave discharge, for both metallurgical and environmental reasons, but it is difficult to operate an autoclave under the conditions required for effective liberation of gold without converting some of the iron to basic iron sulfate and/or jarosite. These compounds fall into a category of iron compounds known generically as iron hydroxy sulfates, all of which can cause significant processing and environmental problems in the downstream gold process. This paper deals specifically with basic iron sulfate: the conditions under which it is formed in an autoclave, the problems that are caused by its presence in the feed to a cyanidation plant and possible remedial strategies that can be adopted, both in the autoclave and downstream.

"INTRODUCTIONThe primary function of the lung, i.e. gas exchange, occurs in peripheral units termed alveoli• Diagnosis of lung dysfunction ls therefore dependent on techniques to evaluate the status of the peripheral airways. Since these airways and alveoli are very small, it is difficult to determine directly how they function or how the function is changing due to disease. Yet this unde1·standing is critical to the design of instrumentation to detect early changes in lung function due to disease.An interesting hypothesis describing one aspect of small airway function has been proposed by Frazer (1) as gas trapping due to the formation of menisci in the airways. An additional study (2) proposes that the breaking and possibly the formation of these menisci could generate lung sounds, i.e. crackles. These lung sounds were recorded by placing a microphone at the trachea of an excised rat lung. The lung was degassed and then inflated and deflated. At points along the path of inflation, lung sounds were recorded. However, determination of the origin of the sounds was not attempted due to the difficulties induced by contacting the lung st1rface with a microphone.The purpose of this paper is to describe a non-contacting, whole field technique to monitor and describe the movements of the lung surface during inflation - deflation cycles.HOLOGRAPHIC INTERFEROMETRYHolographic interferometry is a full field, non-contacting and non-destructive technique that measures deformations of an object with a sensitivity in the order of the wavelength of light. A laser beam is split, with one beam reflected from an object and the other used as a reference beam. Both beams combine to produce a hologram of the object on a photographic plate. The process utilizes the concepts of interference, i.e. the two wave amplitudes will add at the points where the difference in optical path lengths over the exposure period is zero or a whole number of wavelengths and will subtract at other points."

Além disso, na manufatura de certas peças, em especial as de geometria complexa, é fator crítico de sucesso a capacidade do material em absorver intensas deformações localizadas, tipicamente encontradas em operações de expansão de furo. O aço desenvolvido pela Usiminas é um produto laminado a frio, com revestimento eletrogalvanizado, da classe de 600 MPa de limite de resistência, com boas propriedades de flangeamento de bordas e de alongamento em tração. Neste trabalho, é apresentado o desenvolvimento deste aço. São descritas as suas principais características e os resultados de sua aplicação em uma peça de geometria complexa.

Linear meridional zones of bad roof conditions have been frequently encountered in producing collieries working the Permian age Lithgow seam in the western coalfield of New South Wales. The prediction of such zones ahead of mining is desirable for reasons of both safety and economics. In March, 1981, we carried out an experimental, three-component in-seam seismic survey at Invincible Colliery to discover whether such zones have any unambiguous seismic effect. The underground survey was the first of its kind to be attempted in an Australian mine. The data quality was excellent with the spectra broadband and clear. Polarisation analysis disclosed two modes: one compressional; the other shear horizontal. The SH model was clearly dispersive and well gound to the plane of the seam. Modal velocities decreased by up to 15% at the fracture-swarm site. There is a strong suggestion on the RLS maps obtained here that the distributed fault zone is acting as a composite scatterer of channel waves. The P-SV and SH wave tomograms obtained show, in a general way, the distribution of stress in the coal panel.

"This paper discusses the effects of magnetic field and internal radiation on the melt flow and solidification morphology during solidification processing of oxide crystals for optoelectronic and remote sensing applications. The numerical solution of the integral differential equation characterizing the internal radiation and the magnetohydrodynamic equations describing the magnetic and transport phenomena is obtained by applying the combined discontinuous and continuous finite element method. The results show that both internal radiation and an externally applied magnetic field can have important effects on the melt flow and solidification behavior during the melt processing of oxide materials.IntroductionOptical single crystals are widely used in optical and electronic devices. These crystals are often grown from high temperature oxide melts under strictly controlled conditions. As in the well-known single crystal growth processes for semiconductor wafers, thermal gradient in the melt is a major contributing fuctor to the oxide melt pool. Unlike the semiconductor single crystal growth processes, however, the oxide melt is semitransparent and internal thermal radiation plays an important role in redistributing the thermal energy in the melt pool. Our recent experience with pilot-scale plant measurements also shows that the oxide melt is electrically conducting, although its electrical conductivity is considered much lower than the liquid metal or semiconductor melt.The fact that the oxide melt is absorbing and emitting in the thermal radiation frequency range makes it difficult to study the thermal energy transport in the melt pool. This is because thermal radiation is governed by a hyperbolic differential equation, which is different from those describing the transport processes in liquids. Also, our understanding of how thermal radiation interacts with other transport mechanisms such as convection and conduction is rather limited at point in time, in particular in high temperature oxide melts for optical single crystal processing."

Plurigaussian simulation allows constructing lithofacies or rock type models that reproduce the contacts between facies in accordance with the geologist?s interpretation. Its implementation requires inferring the local facies proportions, but the uncertainty in the true proportions is not accounted for. The simpler model with constant facies proportions may not yield realistic results, due to the possibility of obtaining facies at locations where it is geologically unlikely to find them. This article presents a variation of the plurigaussian model, in which the facies proportions are represented by random fields. The realizations can be made conditional to soft geological informati onto account for local changes in the facies proportions. The model is illustrated via a case study of a porphyry copper deposit where four Gaussian random fields are simulated conditionally to drill hole data and to constraints on the probability of finding a given facies at specific locations (control points) in the deposit. Then the first two fields are truncated using the random thresholds defined by the last two, generating a three-facies model. The proposed random proportion model proves to be simple to use and to account for spatial variations of the geological characteristics and for the uncertainty in the facies proportions. O estudo do efeito do elemento de liga Zircônio, nos teores 0,15% e 0,22%, sobre a liga AL-0,05%Cu-[0,35-0,45]%Fe foi realizado com a finalidade de caracterizar o desempenho em cabos e fios para fins de transmissão e distribuição de energia elétrica. Dessa forma, foi adotada sequencia operacional a fim de caracterizar as estruturas apresentadas pelas ligas. O processo de solidificação foi realizado de modo unidirecional horizontal. Posteriormente os lingotes passaram pelos processos mecânicos de usinagem e laminação para obtenção de corpos de prova com quatro distintos diâmetros (2,7; 3,0; 3,8; 4,0) mm a fim de se ter amostras próximas das bitolas utilizadas nas indústrias de cabos elétricos. Todas as ligas foram caracterizadas termicamente [Análise Térmica], eletromecanicamente por meio do ensaio de tração [LRT] e condutividade elétrica [%IACS].

The contribution of the mining industry to the global economy has reached (and gone beyond) $1,800 billion in recent years that necessitates (more than before) the need to ensure workability, viability, health, and safety of mine sites and workers to meet the ever-increasing global demand for mineral resources. Amongst the many challenges facing the excavation industries, rockburst and spalling failures in deep mines in hard and brittle rock formations are yet happening that are still deemed as unsolved problems. During unconfined compressive testing of brittle rocks, microcracks initiate at approximately 0.3–0.5 of the peak strength (which is commonly known as the Crack Initiation stress level) mainly in the direction of the major principal stress, then grow unstably and coalesce to form macro fractures at approximately 0.7–0.8 of the peak load at a so-called Crack Damage stress threshold. From a stress-strain perspective, the crack damage stress threshold () is associated with the reversal point of the volumetric strain, which is also proved to be strongly affected by the intermediate principal stress. This paper extends the previous studies on the impact of true triaxial loading conditions on the CD stress level in high porosity rocks, and introduce a new Crack Mode-Changing Stress (CMCS) defined as the minimum principal stress required to change rock fracturing from splitting to a sliding failure mode. A large number of experiments on sandstone specimens were carried out at different true triaxial loading conditions and the effect of principal stresses on the CI and CD as well as CMCS were studied. The results show that not only the intermediate principal stress, but also the minor principal stress can significantly affect the CD and CMCS thresholds.

Aparelhos eletroeletrônicos como computadores e televisões são constituídos por telas de cristal líquido, que ao se tornarem obsoletos são classificados como resíduos, e dispostos em aterros sanitários. Entretanto, na composição das telas de cristal líquido há metais de valor agregado, como o índio (In). Com a fundamentação no processo de reciclagem de telas de LCD, este estudo propõe a recuperação e quantificação desse metal que é encontrado na forma de ITO (óxido de índio e estanho). Para tal feito, foram empregadas rotas hidrometalúrgicas, tendo como principal etapa a lixiviação. Como parâmetros de controle, os ensaios de extração sólido-líquido foram realizados em temperaturas que variam de 50 a 80°C. Com isso, foi obtido resultado de extração do índio em cerca de 60% em massa, nas condições de 60°C e após 4 horas de lixiviação.

Fault-slip bursts induced by mining activities can result in severe damage to nearby mine development. In general, engineers designing rock support in burst-prone mines not only need to consider stress redistribution resulting from excavation, but also dynamic loading that results from seismic waves generated by large mininginduced fault-slip events. In this study, we simulated dynamic waves in sedimentary rock from a blasting source and from a mining-induced-seismicity source using a Universal Distinct Element Code (UDEC) model with discrete fracture networks (DFNs). Our purpose was to investigate the stability of openings and the adequacy of existing support systems at an underground limestone mine in South Korea. A baseline model with only static loading was also simulated, which verified observed stability under such conditions. The results indicate that the current support system of shotcrete lining is likely to work well under dynamic loading caused by blasting. However, when the dynamic source was a far-field fault-slip event, the dynamic loading exceeded the support capacity of the shotcrete lining. Thus, if a mine is operating in ground with an elevated risk of mininginduced fault slip, mine engineers should consider seismic wave propagation and ground motion distribution from a remote, mining-induced fault-slip event to determine a suitable support design.

RECENT work on grain growth in high purity aluminum and in a solid solution type alloy of aluminum and magnesium&apos; showed that the isothermal increase of the average grain diameter D with time follows the equation [D = K(to + A)-Eq I] Here [to] is that portion of the total annealing time [t], which is available for grain growth, i.e. the annealing time less the time necessary for complete recrystallization. The parameters A and n depend only on the temperature. A has the dimension of time, and is usually of the same order of magnitude as the time for recrystallization: R. In some instances R may be substituted for A in Eq I. This is the case for example at long periods of annealing or at high temperatures, where both A and R become small in comparison with t. In such instances Eq I is simplified to [D-K-tnEq2] For high purity aluminum the exponent n increases in the ratio of about 1 to 5 in the temperature range of 350° to 600°C. 70-30 brass has been long known to exhibit grain growth of the continuous type, such as occurs in pure metals. For this reason, it was of interest to determine whether grain growth in brass also follows Eq I and 2 as it does in aluminum. Isothermal grain growth data for 70-30 brass were published in recent years by R. S. French2 and by H. L. Walker3 Fig I shows a log D vs. log t plot of French&apos;s data, together with the 500, 600 and 100°C data by Walker for 42.8 pct reduction by rolling. In such a log D vs. log t plot Eq 2 corresponds to a straight line with a slope of n. As seen in Fig I, the data of French and the 600°C data of Walker can be represented by straight lines. However, the 500 and 700°C data of Walker give curved lines and the average slope of his 500°C line is very different from the slope of the line representing French&apos;s data for the same temperature. Furthermore the curvature of the 700°C line suggests a tendency for grain growth to stop after 8 hr. If confirmed, this would constitute a definite deviation from Eq 2, not explainable on the basis of the specimen thickness effect found in high purity aluminum.1 Walker&apos;s specimens were 0.125 in., i.e. 3.18 mm thick, while the deviation occurs at a grain size of approximately 0.4 mm. A further point of divergence arose recently, when J. E. Burke suggested4 on the basis of Walker&apos;s data, that, instead of Eq 2, grain growth in 70-30 brass follows the equation [D-D. =K• t,Eq3] Here D, is the grain size as recrystallized at the temperature in question. Although it was possible to show5 that, for pure aluminum, for which isothermal grain growth has been carefully investigated, Eq 3 is incompatible with the experimental facts, the situation remained somewhat obscure with respect to 70-30 brass. Diante disto este mercado sempre procura um aumento na resistência dos componentes das unidades evaporadoras. Neste contexto as aletas, que são feitas utilizando folha de alumínio com revestimento epóxi orgânico dourado, tem papel de grande importância. O presente trabalho visa entender os mecanismos de corrosão da folha nos principais fatores, tais quais, liga, têmpera e revestimento em relação a resistência a corrosão em áreas litorâneas. Os materiais escolhidos foram as ligas 8006 e 8079, na tempera O e com revestimentos base Epóxi e Poliéster. As amostras foram ensaiadas no laboratório utilizando ensaios de corrosão salina e acida que simulam as condições encontradas.

As more and more mining operations around the world either switch to, or trial, electronic initiation systems, the breadth of knowledge and experience regarding their effective application has widened considerably.In South America, for example, there is a strong perception that in order to achieve the finest possible fragmentation, very short electronic delays must be used between successive holes within a row. Limited field studies involving measurement of fragmentation have been conducted to support that paradigm and there are few long term studies which have been strongly supported by measurements of productivity either in the pit, in the plant, or in the leaching pads.On the other hand, some well documented studies have been conducted in North America, showing not only the impact of delay timing on fragmentation but also the effect on semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill productivity over extended periods of in excess of 12 months. To date, those studies suggest that optimum timing is considerably longer than the times commonly used in South America.This paper explores the current knowledge of the effects of delay timing on issues ranging from size distribution to vibration impacts in pit walls, to vibration and overpressure impacts in surrounding communities. It also explores how fragmentation modelling can be adapted to reflect fragmentation trends that have been reported in various technical conferences around the world.

Para a produção de peças e componentes automobilísticos, a utilização de ensaios não destrutivos é de grande importância, tanto para a detecção de defeitos como para a estimativa de propriedades físicas e mecânicas. Este estudo tem como objetivo avaliar dois métodos de ensaios não destrutivos (frequência de ressonância e ultrassom) através da determinação do módulo de elasticidade e do amortecimento de vibrações, em ferros fundidos vermiculares de classe FV 450. Estas técnicas também foram avaliadas para identificar a presença de microporosidades de contração na solidificação. Verificou-se que estas metodologias permitem estimar valores de módulo de elasticidade com bastante precisão, superior à obtida com ensaios de tração. Comprovou-se ainda que a capacidade de amortecimento de vibrações, avaliada pela taxa de atenuação da oscilação, é sensível à presença de interfaces na microestrutura do material, bem como à presença de pequenas porosidades.

Industrial injury occurrences are an ongoing concern for Mine Operators. Along with the personal suffering of injured workers comes an increase in compensation and productivity costs. Growing recognition of repetitive stress and bodily injuries, accompanied by recent studies, validates the assumption that a relationship exists between ergonomic injuries and machine design. Intuitively, there is a belief that an ergonomically designed machine will reduce repetitive stress injuries through design and education however; quantifying this belief has been a challenge for Mine Operators. Sandvik Tamrock has undertaken a project aimed at developing a business model to assist in quantifying the benefits of ergonomic intervention. This model focuses on distinguishing and quantifying this method of intervention to allow for a better evaluation of the machine. For simplicity, the project initially focused on the Face Drill Jumbos. The target of the project was three fold: !" Recognition of the cost drivers for compensation; ergonomic injuries !" Identification of the relationship between ergonomic machine design, and the decrease of the negative effects associated with the cost drivers !" Systematic prioritization for ?prevention by design? The project findings substantiate the expected reduction in injuries and compensation claims. Based on all ergonomic intervention studies conducted, each case showed a reduction in compensation cost; through prevention by design, one can reduce the amount of potential risk. The paper addresses the resources and methodology used, along with the findings and its relevance to the issues that face the Mining industry.

Contour banks and waterways are standard soil conservation measures to assist farmers reduce the impact of gully erosion on sloping cropping land by reducing the slope length to the interval between the banks. The Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) developed by the USA Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service in 1930s predicts the long-term average annual soil loss (A).The equation is the product of the rainfall erosivity factor (R), the soil erodibility factor (K), the topographic factors of slope length and angle (L and S) and the cropping management factors (C and P). Contour banks reduce the slope length (L) only.Contour banks are a constructed earth embankment, incorporating a channel on the upslope side, typically traversing a slope on or close to the contour to control and/or prevent the erosion of that slope. The banks are also referred to as graded banks, terraces, or bunds (DSITI 2015). Contour banks are either broad based or narrow based. Broad based banks allow the passage of the machinery over the banks whilst narrow based bank batters are too steep preventing the passage of machinery. Waterways are a stable, longitudinally sloping water disposal area of sufficient capacity used to discharge surplus runoff from the contour bank and to allow it to flow to a lower level without causing erosion (DSITI 2015).The mining industry must decide what the role for contour banks and waterways is in each operation’s rehabilitation and closure plan.CITATION:Merritt, J L, 2018. This report on oil and gas development in Mississippi covers the period from Jan. I, 1944, to Dec. 31, 1944: Salt Domes During the year six salt domes were drilled for sulphur, but no commercial sulphur deposits were found. One salt dome, the Bruinsburg, in Claiborne County, has produced gas- at 935 to 940 ft&apos; in Moody&apos;s Branch marl. The Stringer salt dome in Smith County and the Ruth salt dome in Lincoln County both had a slight showing of heavy oil. Other salt domes have been dry. In addition to the Bruinsburg dome, the Allen salt dome, in Copiah County, and the Richton salt dome, in Perry County, were discovered in 1944; also the Sumrall dome, in Covington County. New Oil Fields Baxtemille Oil Field.—The Baxterville oil field was discoveredby the Gulf Refining Co, in sec. 7, T. I N., R. 16 W., Lamar County. At the end of the year this field had one oil well, with two active operations. Production for 1944 was 1047 bbl. of oil. GwinvilLe Field.—Gwinville field was discovered by S. W. Richardson, in sec. 24, T. 9 N., R. 19 W., Jefferson Davis County. This discovery well was a gas-distillate well, the oil being crystal clear. At the end of 1944 there were two gas wells and one oil well in the field. The oil well is approximately 2 1/2-miles from the gas- distillate wells. Gas production was 55,801 M cu. ft. and the distillate production was 2644 barrels. Heidelberg Oil Field.— The Gulf Refining Co. discovered the Heidelberg field in sec. 30, T. I N., R. 13 E., Jasper County, in January 1944. This field has by far exceeded the other 1943 and 1944 discoveries, having approximately 56 oil wells, 7 dry holes, and 10 active wells at the end of the year. Production to Jan. I, 1945 was 1,441,192 bbl. of oil. Mallalieu Oil Field.—The california Company discovered the Mallalieu oil field in set. 10, T. 7 N., R. 8 E,, Licoln. County. At the end of the year there was one well in the field with three active operations. Production was 32,303 bbl. of oil. Old Oil Fields Brookhaven Oil Field, in Lincoln County, has one oil well, which produced 2590 bbl. of oil during 1944. CarY Oil Field, Sharkey County1 has only one producing well, which produced 11,818 bbl- of oil during the Year- In Cranfield Oil Field, dams County, II oil wells and two gas-distillate wells were drilled in 1944 and there were five active wells on Dee. 31, 1944- The total production for the Year was 5251422 bbl-of oil. This Bureau of Mines report describes the preparation of phosphoric acid directly from phosphate ore, without prior beneficiation, in a small-scale, continuous process research unit, as part of an effort to improve minerals and metals recovery from domestic resources while minimizing environmental effects. Three phosphate-matrix samples, ranging in grade from 18.2 pct P20S5to 11.9 pct P205, were dry-fed at a rate of 1.82 kg/hr (4 lb/hr) to a continuous-circuit, 12-liter, single-tank digester to yield phosphoric acid and byproduct gypsum filter cake. Comparison with earlier data shows that a significantly improved filtration rate was attained in a single-tank reactor compared with that attained in a five-tank reactor train processing the same ore. Iron and aluminum impurities in the product phosphoric acid averaged about 60 pct higher than amounts reported in commercially prepared, concentrate-derived acid. All gypsum filter cakes prepared had a firm, sandy texture, rendering them physically suitable for stacking or landfill use. Introduction of dry attritioning and air classification approximately doubled the attainable filtration rate when the dry-beneficiated product was digested. In air classification, there was a 12-to 14-pct P205 loss. Depending on the technique used and the matrix grade, overall P205 recovery ranged from about 72 to 89 pct.

"Pouring deep foundations by the tremie pipe method is nowadays such a common process that it has becomes an unspecified practice. Means and methods are almost entirely at the contactor’s discretion. A variety of practices are permitted and seldom associated with the discovery of abnormalities and areas of random defects in concrete. This writer wishes to call the attention of stakeholders to the initiation details of the tremie pour operation.KEYWORDSINTRODUCTIONThe advent of slurry as a means of shoring an excavation of relatively small cross section but of possibly great depth has become part of state of the art in foundations construction, with the substitution of said slurry by concrete to provide the structural end product element through the use of tremie pipes. In appearance, there is nothing more simple than pouring concrete into a tremie pipe through a hopper after the basic work has been done i.e. the excavation or drilling, the cleaning of the slurry, the placement of the reinforcing cage, then the tremie concrete pour is almost a reward for a successful achievement. Force of habit has removed the awareness on the process fundamentals for initiating the pour; a variety of practices used call for a review and a reassessment as a means of reducing construction defects that may result from flawed practices, and and especially we are pouring deeper holes. This writer intends to address this issue focusing both on the drilled shaft and the diaphragm wall industries.TREMIE PIPES AND HOPPERSA tremie pipe diameter needs to be sufficiently large to allow the rapid descent of concrete with a minimum of friction loss and avoiding possible bridging in relation to aggregate size. Impervious joints between pipe sections are essential to prevent slurry “raining” over the concrete which can cause concrete segregation pockets and possibly plug the pipe with damaging consequences. That tremie pipes be long enough to reach the bottom may be self-evident but poorly written specifications can be erratic on that subject and seldom specific in terms of inches. A standard pipe of 10 inches is well accepted throughout the foundations industry; double O rings and spline joints are common and function well if properly maintained. However the practice to cover the joint with the ineffable duct tape indicates that all is not always well with this detail. Also, spline cables may shear in case of very long tremie pipes causing the separation of the tremie pipe requiring a restart in midstream with another probable source of inter mixing of concrete and slurry with subsequent defects."
