O presente trabalho teve por finalidade analisar as tensões residuais, através da técnica de difração de raios-X, em amostras de cobre submetidas à laminação em temperatura ambiente. Foram obtidos e comparados os resultados de um software comercial com um software projetado pelos autores. O comportamento das tensões principais das amostras laminadas foi comparado com o resultado do material no estado recozido. Uma tendência de aumento de tração trativa no interior da amostra foi identificada. Os resultados obtidos seguiram um comportamento dentro do previsto pela bibliografia e os dois softwares utilizados acusaram valores similares, ratificando a aplicabilidade do método de difração assim como a funcionalidade do software desenvolvido.

"IntroductionThe Bienfait Mine is operated by Bienfait Coal Company Ltd., one of the Luscar Limited group of companies. Situated 5 km southeast of the town of Bienfait, Saskatchewan, it can produce 2.0 million tonnes of lignite annually in addition to 158,000 tonnes of char from a carbonization plant located on the property. Geology The economically mineable coal seams of the Estevan area are found in the Ravenscrag Formation. The lignite-bearing sands, silts and clays were deposited in Early Tertiary age, in an inland sea centred in the Williston Basin of North Dakota. The top of the Ravenscrag is an erosional surface, overlain by Tertiary or Quarternary sands and gravels or glacial till. The regional structure is a gently plunging syncline which dips to the southeast at about 0.3 degrees. There are minor undulations in the Bienfait area which are due to differential subsidence during deposition. Sporadic faulting is probably a result of glacial pressures, and preglacial and glacial channels are responsible for washout zones and the abrupt irregular subcrop found in the area. There are two economic coal seams in the Bienfait area, an uppe; seam locally known as the Roche Percee, and a lower seam, the Estevan. Both seams have been extensively mined since lignite mining began in the area in the late 1800s. The Roche Percee remains only in a small portion of the Bienfait Mine and comprises a very minor portion of the reserves. It averages 1.74 m thick under 8.1 m of overburden. The till rests on top of the Roche Percee and due to weathering the seam is generally of poorer quality. The Estevan seam comprises the majority of reserves at Bienfait. The main seam which is being worked on consists of an upper bench averaging 2.75 m, a carbonaceous parting of 0.21 m, and a lower bench of 0.92 m. Overburden depth above this seam varies from 21.0 m to 38.0 m."

Large-scale methane releases in dual salt mines have resulted in ignitions and mine fatalities as recently as 1979. Several past studies have implied that hazardous methane occurrences in U.S. salt domes are distributed neither uniformly nor randomly, but are geologically controlled and potentially predictable. A first step by the Bureau of Mines in addressing the problem of methane in deal salt mines required development of a new test to determine volumes of gases in solid salt samples. This report considers the results achieved when 80 deal salt samples were tested for gas content by dissolution in a controlled atmosphere chamber. Criteria were organized to delineate salt types based on geological occurrence. Outburst samples range from 0.014 to 7.4 cm3 CH4/100 g NaCl, anomalous salt samples from 0.0027 to 2.6 cm3 CH4/100 g NaCl, and normal salts from less than 0.0003 to 0.31 cm3 CH4/100 g NaCl. The presence of higher hydrocarbons was most common in samples containing larger quan¬tities of methane. The presence of higher hydrocarbons appears to be useful in detecting methane hazards where some methane may be lost before gas content testing. An exploratory rotary and/or core drilling program, dissolution testing for gas content, and up-to-date geologic mine napping could allow a mine operator to assess methane hazards in dual salt.

The effects of P2OS or Na2O addition on the reaction rate of CO2 dissociation on the surface of FexO-base molten oxides was investigated at I 773K by isotope exchange method 1-6. The rate constant decreased with increasing P2Os content of molten oxides and the residual rate constant was observed at high P2OS content. On the other hand, the rate constant increased with increasing Na20 content for FexO-SiO2 melts, The rate constant was evaluated by the composition of oxides and the rate controlling step of CO2 dissociation was discussed.

A Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional (CSN) gera diversos resíduos metálicos de diferentes granulometrias que não podem ser utilizadas na rota natural da produção do aço. Este trabalho tem como objetivo descrever o pioneirismo do desenvolvimento e a implantação de melhorias no sistema de adição em carros torpedos que permitiram a utilização nobre de resíduos ricos em ferro, demonstrando a viabilidade técnica assim como a viabilidade econômica. A redução do consumo de energia é outro argumento para reciclagem de resíduos, neste contexto a CSN tem aumentado o interesse pela reciclagem devido a necessidade de diminuição de consumos energéticos e da consciência ambiental. O processo desenvolvido demonstrou a viabilidade da utilização de metálicos de pequena granulometria pela adição em carros torpedo, aumentando a oferta de ferro gusa líquido para os convertedores da CSN.

Increased mineral consumption and environmental concern have caused much interest in potential damage and annoyance from ground vibration and airblast produced by production blasting in surface mines and quarries. Ground vibrations are traditionally blamed for "shaking the house to its foundations," but often the airblast is responsible, particularly when the distances from mine to structure are large. Simultaneous measurements of ground vibrations, structure vibrations, and indoor and outdoor noise from blasting are being used by the Bureau of Mines to determine the relative importance of the ground and airborne blast energy in shaking the structure and making windows, dishes, etc., rattle.

It is known that compressive strength and tensile strength of rocks vary significantly with specimen size. Rocks are composed of crystals and grains in a fabric that includes flaws such as microcracks, grain boundaries and pores. As the likelihood of including severer flaws becomes greater for a larger specimen, the strengths are small. On the other hand, the size effect in the fracture toughness of rocks has not been made clear until now because there are few studies focused on it. In this paper, Semi- Circular Bend (SCB) test was performed using Kimachi sandstone with various specimen sizes. A shape of the specimen is a semi-circular disc with an artificial notch. The specimens were prepared with various thickness t and radius r as the following two groups; t was changed from 10 to 37.5 mm with r = 37.5 mm in the specimen of group (a), and r was changed from 12.5 to 150 mm with t/r = 0.8 in the specimen of group (b). As a result, there was no significant change in the fracture toughness with different t. On the other hand, the fracture toughness increased with increasing r and converged on a certain constant value in a range larger than approximately 70 mm of r. Consequently it was clear that the size effect in the fracture toughness of the sandstone exists.

O objetivo deste trabalho é analisar a influência da solução aquosa com 0,03% de Álcool Polivinílico (PVA) como meio de resfriamento para o aço carbono SAE 1045, comparando-se os resultados de microestrutura e dureza do aço SAE 1045 como recebido e após tratamento térmico de têmpera nos meios de resfriamento: água, óleo e salmoura.

WHEN 1 was assigned by the Director of the United States Bureau of Mines to present a paper at this annual meeting of the Mining Society of Nova Scotia, 1 was grateful, honoured, and elated to realize finally a life-long desire to see your beautiful land and visit with you who have the good fortune to live and work here. Naturally, in preparing for this important event, 1 wanted to give you something of special interest within the limits of the subject so I chose an area dose to my heart -the operation of our Federal coal mine inspection service, which has, as its fundamental purpose, the prevention of accidents in and around ?Coal mines. In 1957 the United States had 10,879 active coal mines scattered throughout 28 States and the Territory of Alaska. The production of coal for the year was about 515,472,000 tons, including 2.5,472,000 tons of anthracite and 490,000,000 tons of bituminous coal and Hgnite. Anthracite is mined principally in a comparatively small area of one State. AU the 28 States and the Territory produce bituminons coal and/or lignite. The beds mined range from 18 inches to more than 100 feet in thickness and from the horizontal to the perpendicular.

Esse trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar os fenômenos termoplásticos de carvões coqueificáveis e sua relação com o tamanho de partícula. Para isso, dois carvões americanos e um de origem nacional foram amostrados, caracterizados e separados em três tamanhos de partículas. Após a preparação das matérias-primas, ensaios termogravimétricos, de dilatometria e plastometria foram realizados a partir dos diferentes tamanhos de partícula. Os ensaios termoplásticos mostraram que o carvão nacional apresentou propriedades plásticas extremamente desenvolvidas e que a granulometria não afeta essas propriedades. No entanto, para os carvões americanos de alto e médio volátil diferenças importantes foram observadas, que indicam uma redução das propriedades termoplásticas com a diminuição do tamanho de partícula.

The high costs and environmental problems associated with making iron and steel in the United states is driving the development of new technologies to replace the blast furnace. A prototype reactor incorporating rocket technology was designed and built. This rapid rate reactor was operated successfully and consistently made iron metal. Minus 32s-mesh magnetite particles could be reduced to iron metal in less than 50 ms in a high temperature flow through reactor. Iron product was recovered inside the reactor and in a downstream cyclonic separator. The results of typical operation and how parametric changes affected the reduction of iron ore concentrates are discussed.

A passive acoustic emission (AE) monitoring system has been developed and trialled on two M10000 IsaMillsTM. The analyser detects AE stress waves generated by grinding media impacts with the mill liner during mill operation. Locally propagating stress waves can be detected on the exterior liner surface using strategically mounted broadband accelerometers.The analyser has been developed into a robust commercial prototype system, and has been designed, installed and commissioned with Xstrata Technology at two mineral processing plants.A six-month field trial showed large-scale variation in AE power signature with process conditions. Analysis of the enveloped AE power output demonstrated a strong correlation with mill process conditions – more specifically grinding media relative loading, feed pulp density, feed volumetric flow rate and feed type.Placement of accelerometers along the length of the mill body provided key information on the grinding media relative deportment. The enveloped AE power detected by the mill body, discharge pipe and bearing housing sensors all captured information strongly correlated with mill operating parameters and process state.The prototype analyser demonstrates suitability as a long-term online tool for stirred mill performance monitoring, and potentially for optimisation and control, in beneficiation plants.CITATION:Jackson, C A, Spencer, S J, Masters, J, Sharp, V, McEwan, A, Rainey, S, Catanzano, A, Roberts, G and Millen, M, 2014. The wide range of potential feed materials, process steps, and products in metallurgical facilities means that standard equipment might not be available to adequately meet the project technical and economic needs. Custom designed equipment should be considered only after rigorous research precludes purchasing standard equipment. However, the decision to use custom equipment introduces a new element of risk into the project. To manage the risk, custom equipment design should be developed through the same front end loading (FEL) phases as project development. If more than incremental development of custom equipment is required, appropriate test work or pilot trials are required to test key uncertainties. Important activities during custom equipment design include maintaining clearly defined performance objectives, conducting appropriate reviews, carefully crafting commercial and intellectual property agreements with design and fabrication partners, and assembling a multidisciplinary team with sufficient development expertise.

This research project which took place at Brunswick Mining and Smelting's Brunswick mine, was undertaken to assess the ability of new diesel engine technology to meet current and anticipated underground worker exposure limits to diesel exhaust contaminants. Concentrations of CO, CO2 NO, NO2 SO2 and respirable combustible dust (RCD) were measured in a remote mine area where a haulage truck was operating under simulated duty cycles. The 26 ton haulage truck was equipped with a 300 hp, electronically controlled engine. Fresh air was supplied to the area as per the MSHA certification document for this particular engine. Results showed that while the vehicle operated in a normal and realistic duty cycle, the concentrations of contaminants remained well below the ACGIH guidelines for the threshold limit values (TLV)for exposure. While operating at 630/0 of maximum horsepower (26 tons of ore in the dump), the time-weighted average exhaust gases concentrations (CO, CO2 NO, NO2 and SO2) never exceeded 150/0 of their respective TL Vs. ReD concentrations in this instance were measured at 0.59 mg/mJ or 39.30/0 of the exposure limit suggested by the Canadian ad hoc Diesel Committee. The Air Quality Index was 1.55 or 520/0 of the maximum suggested value for exposure.

SEVERAL recent determinations of the melting S point of pure chromium have been reported which give values of 1845°C1; 1895°C,² 1930°C,³ 1860°C,' and 1890°C.5 because of this wide spread of values, it appeared desirable to make one additional attempt to obtain a more accurate, reliable figure. bloom and Grantx recently reported a phase transformation in chromium:.--- it was desired to check this, too, in the course of checking the melting point. To accomplish this, a much higher purity chromium was required. Electrolytic chromium containing about 0.5 pct 0 was crushed to a finer size and was then annealed in highly purified, dried hydrogen at 1375°C for 100 hr. This treatment produced chromium with about 0.008 pct 0, 0.002 pct N, and negligible carbon. The balance of the impurities was 0.3 pct Fe, 0.03 pct Si, 0.004 pct S, and less than 0.001 pct Mo. This chromium was melted in a stabilized zirconia crucible under pre-purified argon, using induction heating. Temperature measurements were made with annealed wolfram-molybdenum thermocouples and a Leeds and Northrup Speedomax Recording Potentiometer. The thermocouples were annealed for 1 min in hydrogen at a temperature of about 2400°C. Each leg of the thermocouple was immersed in an ice-water mixture using mechanical connectors to the lead wires. The thermocouple tip was immersed in the molten chromium in a zirconia protection tube which introduces an error of about 3°C as a temperature drop through the walls of the tube. The weight of chromium was about 183 g. The dimensions of the melt in the crucible were about 1.25 in. diam x 2 in. high. The tip of the thermocouple was held about ½ in. from the bottom of the crucible. Two new thermocouples were used with the above set-up giving the results shown in Table I. Since this chromium is purer than that used by Greenaway, Johnstone and McQuillan,' by Carlile et al.,4 and other investigators,²,3 it is believed to be the more accurate. Thermocouple aging effects which are believed responsible for the high value of 1930°C³ were avoided in this work. This value of 1903°C is correct to about ±10°C. The right hand column lists the temperature of the a ? ß transformation on heating and the ß ? a on cooling.3 A sample curve is shown in Fig. 1. The value so determined is 1840°C + 15°C. O material em estudo consistiu em um aço inoxidável austenítico 201LN, na forma de chapa com aproximadamente 5,00 mm de espessura na condição laminada a quente. As etapas de processamento adotadas neste estudo consistiram em laminação a temperatura ambiente e pré-resfriamento em salmoura, com o objetivo de avaliar a formação de martensita e evolução da resistência mecânica do material. As técnicas de caracterização utilizadas foram macro Dureza Rockwell C (HRC), Ferritoscopia e Difração de Raios-X (DRX). Os resultados preliminares mostraram que tanto a fração volumétrica de martensita formada, como a dureza, foram maiores nas amostras submetidas a maiores percentuais de redução e pré-resfriamento em salmoura.

"The size distribution of coal mine dust is one of its most important characteristics because the particle size is known to govern the region of deposition of dust within the human respiratory tract. In addition, dust characteristics, particle settling rate, transportability of the dust and the efficiency of dust control measures are all affected by the particle size. As a result, particle size distribution of the airborne dust in a coal mine is a fundamental property that impacts on the health of underground workers.This paper deals with some basic findings on the size distribution of cool mine dust based upon the results of data collection in six underground coal mines using continuous miners. All airborne dust sampling was performed on development sections using eight stage cascade impactors and permissible 2. O l / min pumps. Samplers locations were fixed in the sections with respect to the continuous miner and roofbolter or with respect to the intake and return airways • Sampling times varied from 45 minutes to 6 hours , depending upon the dust concentration. The first topic of analysis was the test to determine whether the commonly used lognonnal distribution is valid when applied to airborne coal mine dust. Secondly, the conventional method of representing the· distribution using two parameters, the geometric mean and the geometric standard deviation, is questioned. Since almost all size data were found to show some degree of bimodality, the two parameter lognonnal distribution may not represent the total airborne coal mine dust size , quite adequately. Bimodal lognonnal distribution was tested to be a good approximation in the case with two modes in the size distribution.The final topic discussed in this paper is the 'locational variation of the airborne dust size distributions within the continuous mining section. The size distributions varied considerably at the different sampling locations with the continuous miner and roofbolter producing the coarser distributions. Fine size modes in the range of 2 to 4µ m including mostly respirable dust particles were present in almost all samples • Second dust generating sources such as the shuttle car movement were found to be major causes of high respirable dust concentrations in some cases ."
