Os mais importantes processos de redução de minério de ferro em fornos de cuba convivem, com maior ou menor intensidade, o problema de precipitação de carbono no interior de seus reatores. Para melhor conhecer os efeitos dos parâmetros operacionais desses processos sobre as cinéticas simultâneas de redução das pelotas de minério de ferro e de precipitação de carbono, foi definido um programa cooperativo entre a Samarco e o Grupo de Siderurgia da PUC-Rio. O presente trabalho é a parte 1 deste programa, que analisou o comportamento de pelotas RD nas temperaturas de 500, 700 e 900 °C, vazões de 60 e 90 NL/min e pressões de 1,2 e 2,5 atm, quando reagiram com os gases de topo e sopro típicos das regiões superiores (Zona de Redução-ZR) dos fornos de produção de ferro esponja (DRI). O tratamento dos resultados obtidos nos testes programados pelo método estatístico fatorial, permitiu identificar as cinéticas concorrentes e propor um modelo global baseado no principio da superposição. Finalmente, utilizando as curvas “Grau de Reação Global-GR versus tempo”, mostrou correlações plenamente compatíveis com os dados experimentais levantados e plena viabilidade de aplicação a outros processos de produção de ferro primário.

Foi implementado um modelo matemático transiente e tridimensional para prever os campos de temperatura e composição presentes no sólido e poça de fusão durante um processo de soldagem a arco. O modelo foi desenvolvido com base nas equações de conservação macroscópicas de calor, massa e espécies químicas, que foram solucionadas pelo método dos volumes finitos. Os resultados do modelo mostraram boa aderência com soluções analíticas. Foram apresentados os efeitos de mudança na velocidade e potência de soldagem na distribuição de temperatura obtida e no formato da poça de fusão para soldagem em uma chapa de liga Al-6,5%Cu.

O objetivo deste trabalho é apresentar as soluções implementadas para modernização e automação do laminador piloto do Instituto de Pesquisas Tecnológicas do Estado de São Paulo-IPT, importante ferramenta de pesquisa do seu Centro de Tecnologia em Metalurgia e Materiais. O IPT, em parceria com o Laboratório de Fenômenos de Superfície da EPUSP, tem trabalhado nas duas últimas décadas com o desenvolvimento de ligas resistentes a desgaste, principalmente para uso em cilindros de trabalho para laminação a quente. Com recursos provenientes de projeto co-financiado pelo BNDES e pela Gerdau, o laminador piloto e o forno de indução para aquecimento de placas foram reformados e modernizados, permitindo que a célula de laminação trabalhe de forma autônoma e que os dados de processo sejam continuamente registrados. Nesse projeto estão sendo conduzidos ensaios de laminação de longa duração para caracterizar e quantificar o dano progressivo imposto aos cilindros pela laminação a quente de placas de aço carbono sob condições controladas de temperatura e grau de deformação e de refrigeração dos cilindros. A modernização do laminador envolveu 3 etapas: reforma e automação do laminador e do forno de aquecimento; montagem do sistema de refrigeração dos cilindros e instrumentação dos cilindros de trabalho.

A geração de resíduos siderúrgicos é um problema que abrange dois cenários: o ambiental, no que diz respeito ao descarte de resíduos no meio ambiente e também tange o econômico, pois trata-se de material não reaproveitado que deve ser destinado a aterros industriais, gerando custos. Tendo isto em vista, a reciclagem desses possíveis coprodutos para a reutilização como matéria-prima do processo torna-se uma alternativa pertinente. Uma das formas de recuperação do pó de aciaria elétrica (PAE), resíduo abordado neste trabalho, é através da pelotização. Para o reaproveitamento de metais de interesse do pó foi utilizado um agente redutor, o coque de petróleo. No entanto, para formação das pelotas um aglomerante se faz necessário. Este, em associação com as partículas do óxido, tem como objetivo conferir resistência mecânica adequada às solicitações que o processo de fabricação do aço exige. Neste trabalho, são feitas considerações acerca do uso de seis composições diferentes de aglomerantes com o objetivo de avaliar o desempenho destes, através de ensaios de resistência a compressão, testes de queda e tamboramento. Como resultado, pode-se verificar o melhor desempenho da combinação da cal com cinza de casca de arroz.

Este artigo apresenta um estudo das características metalúrgicas, geométricas e microestruturais da soldagem TIG autógena aplicada em chapas de um aço AISI 304, o processo autógeno tipo cordão sobre chapa foi utilizado com a finalidade avaliar o comportamento deste aço quando submetido a ciclos térmicos distintos. A soldagem foi automatizada, na posição plana, e realizada com controle de velocidade com a finalidade de regular a energia adicionada ao material soldado. As variáveis de entrada foram a velocidade da tocha de soldagem TIG, e a corrente setada na máquina de solda. Foram avaliados os efeitos da variação da energia de soldagem sobre as características metalúrgicas do processo, sobre as características geométricas (penetração e largura) do cordão se solda, microestrutura, espaçamento dendrítico e microdureza da seção transversal da junta soldada. Os resultados indicaram uma forte influência sobre a geometria da junta soldadas, aumento de 28,5% na largura, 59,6% na profundidade e 44,6% na área, além de alterações microestruturais, aumento de 100% na quantidade de ferrita d, 12% na microdureza e 51,69% no espaçamento das dendritas no metal de solda, Além disso observaram-se ausência de defeitos nos passes isolados sobre as chapas.

Electrical apparatus and circuits began to be used in mines about 50 years ago. A search of the literature on mining reveals that in 1882, umping was being done by electricity in some aines of England. One account tells of a small electric locomotive being used in 1882 "to drive eight corves loaded with coal" in a mine near Dresden. In an account of his visit to some English mines, en American in 1892 mentions that he saw underground electric signals, lights, pumps, hoists, and one revolving- cutter-bar 19wall mining machine,. Among the carl electrical installa- tions in the United States was an electric locomotive in the Lykens Valley Coal Co. mine at Lykens Valley, Pa., in 1887. In 1889 the Sperry electric coal digger was being tried out. Tarce mining machines were placed in the Prospect mine, East Palestine, Ohio, in 1890. An electrical pumping plant was put in oneration during 1892 in the Woodward mine of the Delaware, Lacka- rahma & Western Railroad Co. Thus we Almost coincident with the proposed use of this new servant in under- ground workings, came the thought of making it safe in gassy mines. find an account of a design for a protected stationary electric mine lamp proposed by Edison in 1831. Enclosed-type motors rere developed in the United States and shiped to English collieries about 1903. From those early beginnings there has been continuous progress until to-day one finds hundreds of pieces of specially designed electrical apparatus distributed in American coal mines and in mines of nearly all important coal-producing countries. Along with introduction of this equipment grew the idea of the necessi- ty of government aid, in standardization. With an increase of mining depth, a series of mining-induced hazards such as rockburst, coal and gas outburst, roof collapse, and water burst are getting more serious and more frequent. The intrinsic mechanism responsible for the occurrence of mining-induced hazards is the damage and unstable failure of rockmass or coal seam. The most distinct difference between deep and shallow levels is the so-called three ‘high’ (H3) conditions, i.e. high geo-stress, high fluid pressure and high geo-temperature. Therefore, the response of rock or coal to the deep mining operation is a phenomenon involving thermal (T), hydraulic (H), and mechanical (M) processes. Most importantly, mining excavation may vary the rock stress condition greatly, which may be a key factor to trigger the mining-induced hazards such as rockburst. In this regard, it is of great significance to clarify the damage and failure mechanism of rock and coal under coupled THM conditions, in order to clarify the rock failure mechanism responsible for the occurrence of mining-induced hazards. Thereafter, the mining-induced hazards cannot be predicted with confidence by considering each process independently. Of course, the requirement to include coupling of these processes depends on the specifics of the mining-induced hazards under consideration. For example, the water inrush is considered as a coupled hydro-mechanical (HM) process, in which the unstable failure of rockmass occurs under the combined contribution of geo-stress and water pressure. As for the coal mining at depth, in addition to high geo-stress and gas pressure in coal seam, the high geo-thermal condition that may greatly change the adsorption / desorption of gas and gas flow should be taken into account. Firstly, a general-purpose mathematical model for rock damage and failure process under coupled THM conditions is formulated based on damage mechanics principle, and it is solved by finite element method (FEM). In this model, the deformation and damage of rock, fluid flow and thermal transfer in rock would interact with each other, one process affects and initiation and progress of another. Then, the model is used to predict the mining-induced water outburst, where it is simulated as coupled hydro-mechanical (HM) problems. Based on the numerical simulation, the dimension of water-proof pillar is designed. Finally, the gas drainage from deep coal seam is numerically evaluated, where the coupled coal-gas interaction considering the effect of gas adsorption/desorption, gas flow in coal seam and geo-stress and geotemperature, is comprehensively taken into account. The proposed model could be used for clarifying the mechanism of mining-induced hazards in deep-level mining.

The underwriting of professional negligence has proved to be an evolving science. As with most insurance products coverage offered in the past was very broad but as legal precedent demonstrated to Insurers areas of unforeseen exposure policy documents per se have become more restrictive until today the insurance market through attrition have produced a basic policy structure with various purchasable extensions which together provide insuring professionals with coverage that has proved to be adequate for their needs. The basic policy provides indemnity and protection for fortuitous negligence. In a practical sense, however, professional indemnity policies are really a defence document in so far as policy holders are relying upon the expertise of Insurers to protect them in the event that a claim is made upon them. Whether damages are awarded is in many respects a secondary consideration, the most important factor is to ensure that policy holders are protected in terms of the legal defence mechanism. By way of illustration we are currently in the process of defending a large professional firm which purchased from us a policy with a limit of indemnity of $10M. The case has been running in a Supreme Court now for 14 months and the defence costs which we have incurred on their behalf are rising close to $8M as I put pen to paper. Defence costs of that magnitude would in effect terminally cripple all but the very largest professional operations in Australia. In more recent times coverage has been provided in Australia for breaches of the Trade Practices Act and similar legislation enacted in various States. No-one really appreciated the comprehensive impact which the Trade Practices Act would have on commerce in Australia. Most professionals thought that indeed they would be exempt from prosecution under this Act. The passage of time has clearly indicated that this is not the case and we have found that it is much more difficult to defend a claim involving breaches of the Trade Practices Act than it would be to defend a claim for breach of tortuous liability.

Updating the openpit vehicle transportation network has the problem of being time consuming and low precision. To address this problem, a high-precision road network model construction method for unmanned vehicles in openpit mines is proposed. This method can be divided into two steps. In the first step, an improved deep learning image processing model named DeepLabv3+C (DeepLabv3+Concat) is presented, and the road information extracted by the DeepLabv3+C network is used to construct a three-dimensional model of the openpit mine road network. In the second step, aiming at the time-consuming problem of unmanned vehicles meeting in openpit mines, a vehicle meeting strategy is proposed. This strategy is used to guide the navigation of unmanned vehicles in openpit mines. At the end of the study, vehicle running simulation was carried out on the road network model using Unity, a 3D visualization simulation software. The high-precision unmanned road network model of openpit mines studied in this work can further promote the construction and development of smart mines by acting as a high-precision map for unmanned vehicles.

Observations made from laboratory analysis of samples of fine-grained argillaceous materials (shales) subjected to various changes in moisture content have been correlated to loss of strength in the rock material. This reaction to a change in in-situ conditions (subsequent to mining) at a mine site combined with the observed relationships of surface-disturbing subsidence features at locations where the predominant overburden material is fine-grained, provides a predictive tool for the subsidence engineer.

Mineral flotation is the most used process to selectively separate particles of one or more minerals of interest. The process uses natural or induced hydrophobicity to collect particles on the surface of rising bubbles through collisions and formation of bubble-particle aggregates. Flotation machines must keep particles in suspension and well distributed, while at the same time, disperse a mass of air into a population of small bubbles. The efficiency of the separation depends primarily on the characteristics of the bubble population generated in the machine and its distribution and flow throughout its volume. The formation and separation of bubble-particle aggregates create two zones, with strong interactions between them, and with markedly different hydrodynamics conditions. A model describing two-phase hydrodynamics of the continuous and dispersed phases (frother solutions and bubbles, respectively), moving along the whole unit, is proposed. Bubble populations are characterized at the formation stage including the effect of the presence of frothers. Flow through the aggregates formation zone, where bubbles move freely and are closely spherical, is modeled using drift-flux analysis. In the aggregates separation zone, bubbles initially pack maintaining a water layer thick enough to prevent capillary forces to affect their shape. As water drainage proceeds, bubbles deform, capillary channels form, and a network of channels with a diameter size distribution develops; channels become narrower (permeability is reduced) as the distance from the interface increases. Froth hydrodynamics is characterized using models originally developed to describe unsaturated flow through porous solid particle beds. Effects of hydrostatic pressure are considered.

The emerging importance of pneumatic conveying systems for bulk materials is becoming recognized by more persons responsible for materials management as consultants, at the corporate level and at the plant level. They have learned that the economic advantages of a pneumatic system are frequently decisive when compared to alternate methods. Included in these advantages are relative simplicity, ease of installation, flexibility, ease of maintenance, cleanliness, safety and ease of automation to the degree desired. In general, installed costs favor a pneumatic system when compared to competing mechanical systems if the transporting distances are long or to and from many points. In addition, supplemental use such as cooling, heating, or drying may supply the incremental value required to justify its selection. (1). The main disadvantages of a pneumatic system is the greater horsepower required per unit weight of material conveyed and material limits in abrasiveness and density. In addition, there is a tendency to increase material breakage at changes of direction and at any obstruction such as the imperfect butting of one, piece of pipe to another in the conveying line. Classification of the material at the discharge may also cause problems in dusting and segregation. Materials weighing less than 4 pounds per cubic foot tend to cause feeding and collecting problems although they can be conveyed easily. Material between 4 and 20 pounds per cubic foot can be handled with less problems but flow rate is hard to predict. The 20 to 60 pounds per cubic foot range offers best results; whereas, over 60 pounds per cubic foot, materials tend to drop out of the air stream and settle in the pipe line unless careful provisions are made to prevent it. The design of coal-mine layouts is based on the knowledge of a broad range of geological and geotechnical parameters, which must be determined from a sequence of exploration programs. It follows that any weaknesses in selecting, determining, interpreting or utilizing these data are inevitably reflected into the mine-planning process. In this paper, the main methods of exploration are reviewed and evaluated with the emphasis on acquisition, interpretation and storage of variables pertaining to mine-design. Some common problems are highlighted and recommendations are given for improving the utilization of data and optimizing coal-mine design procedures.

I must tell you at the outset that I come to this conference deeply disturbed at the 'role of Government in international dealings in mineral and energy resources'. I am disturbed by- the confusion that now passes for policy. I am disturbed by the short- range view of critical problems taken by a majority of Governments. I am equally disturbed by the even shorter range of view taken by a growing army of industries. Many of them clamour for Governments to solve their problems in a specific way, with little regard for any other sector but their own-and with even less regard for the fact that every time a Government takes over some of their responsibilities they surrender some of their freedom. I would not say that longer range views don't exist. But I would say that they don't prevail at the present time. Instead, we are seeing the constant development of many policies for individual problems which don't tackle the fundamental causes. We must get back to basics without delay.

Most Newfoundland. mineral deposits can be clearly classified as within rocks formed either as accreting plate margins (ophiolitic pyrite-chalcopyrite massive sulfides such as Betts Cove, Whalesback, York Harbour, chromite at Lewis Hills, and asbestos at Baie Verte), at consuming plate margins (Kuroko-type polymetallic massive sulfides such as Buchans and Pilleys Island, porphyry-type Mo-Cu at Rencontre, fluorite at St. Lawrence), or within plates (zinc deposits at Daniels Harbour, sedimentary iron ores at Wabana, manganese in Conception Bay.) As these metallogenic patterns can be convincingly extrapolated southward into the Appalachians and northward to the Caledonides, they provide an important means of eliminating and selecting areas for particular exploration targets. Sonic criteria are described for the recognition of these environments of differing economic potential.

Reserves of potash are more than adequate to meet future world demand for this primary fertilizer nutrient. The bulk of both reserves and current production is located in only a few countries. Recent attention has focused on potential development of smaller reserves to supply local markets in developing areas of the world. However, most new capacity in the next decade will be built in countries with large current production and reserves. The paper reviews current and future projects that will add to the world supply of potash.

O trabalho visa apresentar dois tipos de equipamentos para medição on-line de camada de óleo em superfícies de chapas e placas. O equipamento é denominado SOLID® (Surface Oil Layer Inline Determination) e tem como aplicação típica laminadores, processadores de tiras e qualquer outro tipo de linha onde algum tipo de óleo ou cera é aplicado na superfície do material. O equipamento realiza medição on-line com o material em produção e determina a camada de óleo ou cera em toda a largura e comprimento do material, permitindo ao cliente monitorar com precisão a aplicação deste produto.

With the activities of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Division geared chiefly to problems directly connected with the war effort , the emphasis of the work under oil and gas development and production was to make engineering studies of selected reservoirs for the Petroleum Administration for War , to determine the extractable quantities of components in them, and to study the characteristics of these components for use in the manufacture of aviation gasoline and other products . The needs of the Petroleum Administration for War and the operators for specific data from gas - condensate fields were fulfilled , and , in addition , engineering data along lines of a forward - looking program of research on reservoir behavior were collected , which should be of great value in the postwar period . It is planned to publish many of these data as soon as conditions permit . The work of the Secondary Recovery Section had as its objectives in- . creasing the rate of production of crude petroleum and , which is more important , preventing the premature abandonment of wells in " stripper " and marginal According to the National Survey of Stripper Wells by the National Stripper Well Association in cooperation with the Interstate Oil Compact Commission , a total of 67,460 stripper wells was abandoned from January 1 , 1935 , to July 1 , 1942 , inclusive , with an estimated loss in proved reserves of approximately 216 million barrels . This survey also indicates that over 1.2 billion barrels of oil would be recovered by primary production from more than 290,000 stripper wells then in operation , and an additional 2.5 billion barrels of oil could be recovered from them by secondary production methods . The work of the Chemistry and Refining Section was oriented towards the optimum utilization of crude oils in the manufacture of aviation fuels for spark-ignition and jet - propulsion engines . The work involved intensive studies of superfractionation , hydrocarbon analysis , and the engine testing of fuels . Particular attention was given to the effect of sulfur compounds in the crude oils and in the fuels made from them . The research on thermodynamics is concerned with the experimental determination of precise and accurate values of the fundamental thermodynamic constants of pure hydrocarbons and related compounds . The data obtained in these investigations will be utilized for devising and improving chemical processes in which petroleum hydrocarbons are the raw materials . Without such data , much time and expensive material and equipment may be wasted in attempts to obtain reactions under conditions that the laws of thermodynamics rule out of consideration . Thermodynamic data are useful and required in the petroleum industry for calculations of heat balances in the design of furnaces , fractionating towers , and heat- transfer equipment . It is of utmost importance , also , to know the heat requirements of cracking and other chemical reactions so that heat may be supplied or dissipated in the proper proportions . These needs for thermodynamic data are being recognized more and more by petroleum -refining engineers . The responsibility for the production of helium for the Navy , the Army , other governmental agencies and non-Federal users is vested in the Bureau of Mines by an Act of Congress ( 50 Stat . 885 ; 50 U.S.c. 161-166 ) . The Helium Subdivision of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Division continued to meet all demands for helium .
