O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar a TTDF do aço ASTM A36 com diferentes graus de encruamento após ensaios de impacto Charpy, sob diversas metodologias. Não se notaram diferenças no comportamento do material quando se avaliam os valores de TTDF obtidos pela medição da expansão lateral dos corpos de prova, nem considerando o valor da TTDF na qual o material apresenta 50% de fratura frágil, usando as metodologias de avaliação visual das faces de fratura dos corpos de prova, embora os valores sejam divergentes dos valores obtidos pelos métodos analíticos. A avaliação das faces de fratura dos corpos de prova por microscopia eletrônica de varredura permitiu visualizar que nas regiões onde visualmente considerou-se que havia apenas fratura frágil, também haviam regiões típicas de fratura dúctil. Conclui-se que a metodologia mais indicada é aquela que considera a TTDF como a temperatura na qual a energia absorvida é a média dos patamares superior e inferior, pois é um método simples, de fácil reprodutibilidade e que melhor refletiu a tendência de comportamento do material nos diferentes graus de encruamento estudados.

J. Askill and T. S. Lundy (Oak Ridge National Laboratory)—Moore has proposed a simple correlation between the activation energy for solute diffusion in fee metals and the atomic volume of the diffusing species using both tracer and chemical-diffusion data. The first point we wish to make is that it is wrong to attempt such correlations without separating the two types of data. Activation energies obtained using tracer techniques cannot, in general, be directly compared with those obtained from chemical-diffusion experiments. A knowledge of the variations of chemical potentials with composition is necessary and chemical-diffusion data must be corrected for such variations, even for dilute alloys, before a comparison is possible. Secondly, for nickel, iron, aluminum, and lead, Moore neglected a number of recently published works, e.g., Al26 and Mn54 in aluminum,46 cr51 in nickel,47 and Fe55 in iron.48 These and others should have been used. If one considers only the tracer diffusion data, there is left no simple correlation of the type proposed by Moore. For example, in the case of solute diffusion in aluminum the only reliable tracer data listed by Moore are for zinc and aluminum. The nickel, cobalt, and iron data of Agarwala49 are representative of near-surface diffusion-not bulk diffusion. In conclusion we suggest that for tracer diffusion data in these fee metals there is no justification for proposing any simple correlation of activation energy with atomic volume using the limited data that are presently available. R. H. Moore (author's reply)—The writer has proposed a simple correlation which is useful in estimating the internal consistency of diffusion data. The accuracy of the correlation is, of course, a function of the number of data available. Lundy and Askill take issue with the writer's decision to include data for the systems: nickel, iron, aluminum, and lead, taking the view that the data are insufficient to establish the correlation. The writer agrees that the data are insufficient and has cau- tioned the reader that the correlation is tentative in these instances. Inclusion of these systems is justified by the interesting trends the correlation reveals. For example, the distinction between interstitial and substitutional diffusion may be clearly established, Figs. 4 and 6, and the behavior of transition elements and nontransition elements is indicated to parallel the behavior illustrated by the silver and copper systems. Lundy and Askill have singled out the aluminum system for special criticism. The writer chose to discuss the data for diffusion of iron, nickel, and cobalt in aluminum in the terms used by the original authors9 and has included the comments of Balluffi.l0 The writer did not intend the reader to conclude that data for these elements should correlate with data for the nontransition elements as Lundy and Askill have evidently assumed. Iron, nickel, and cobalt form intermetallic compounds with aluminum, so the activity coefficients of these elements may be expected to deviate markedly from unity. This may account for the low frequency factors observed by Hirano.9 The nontransition elements, on the other hand, yield relatively simple phase diagrams with no evidence for intermetallic compound formation as in the case of iron, nickel, and cobalt. In dilute solution, Henry's law should be closely obeyed, the activity coefficients should not deviate markedly from unity, and the effect on the activation energy should not be large. The accuracy of the correlation applied to these systems will improve as the data is extended. It does not seem unreasonable to conclude that its extension should be encouraged.

"PURPOSE OF REPORTThe safety and efficacy of permissible storage—battery gathering locomotives are becoming recognized more and more in coal mines. The great mobility of this type of haulage equipment is due to the fact that no trolley wire and bonding of rails are needed; hence wherever there is track and adequate ventilation to dilute properly any dangerous gases, the storage—battery gathering locomotive may go. As coal near the outcrop or the surface is mined out, coal farther from the outcrop or deeper in the ground must be mined, and gassiness of the coal bed often increases under these conditions. The use of electrical equip¬ment capable of giving off arcs or sparks while operating near or at the coal faces constitutes a serious explosion hazard. Often, it is uneconomical or impracticable to use animal haulage, and locomotives must be employed. The operator should consider the safest and most economical unit; permissible equipment is the answer to this problem, and storage—battery locomotives are the only permissible electric haulage units.A comparison of permissible storage—battery locomotives with cable—reel locomotives of the latest enclosed ""explosion—tested"" type has been made at the Keystone No. 1 mine of the Houston Collieries Co., at Keys one, W. The importance of mine ventilation to health and safety in both coal and metalliferous mines has been long recognised. The primary and secondary ventilation systems in most metalliferous mines incur 50 per cent or more of the total mine electrical power consumption and frequently about 10 per cent of total underground mine operating costs. The requirements for ventilation-related horizontal and vertical development, fans and cooling have a significant impact on mine capital costs and also on mine schedules and start-up times and hence cash flows. There are increasing pressures on regulators and miners to reduce airborne contaminants such as diesel particulatematter, nitrogen dioxide and heat (wet bulb temperatures), and significant pressures to reducegreenhouse gases such as fugitive methane emissions from coalmines and the carbon dioxide footprint of both coal and metalliferous mines. Many previously Australian miners are now globaloperators and have extensive overseas mining operations where local ventilation standards and expertise may not be consistent with Australian practices. The role of the site ventilation officer is also changing with strict new requirements for the statutory position being introduced into Queensland metalliferous mines and the potential for this to become more widespread. Recent regulator and parliamentary review committees have identified systematic shortcomings in mine ventilation compliance, and statutory certificates in both Queensland and NSW now require continuing professional development to maintain currency. Public and investor support for mining are also increasingly contingent on safe, healthy and environmentally responsible practices and the standards for these are frequently tightening. Good ventilation design and operating practices that are consistently well executed therefore contribute significantly not only to a safe and healthy mine but also to a productive and cost-effective operation and the ongoing social licence to operate. There are a variety of ways of providing technical design and oversight into a mine’s ventilation systems; this paper explores some current trends in ventilation standards and statutory requirements, as well as ways to support and develop mine ventilation staff for both domestic and international operations and also the emerging senior technical roles of Group/Principal/Corporate mine ventilation engineer.

The project team was tasked with the design and installation of a deep foundation system to support an expansion to a power generating station in Glenrock WY. Cast-in-place piles installed by a fixed mast drilling platform were assessed to be the most efficient foundation system for the subgrade conditions and range of design loads for the project. It was determined that conventional augered, cast-in-place piles could not be installed to the required pile toe elevations. Subsurface materials consisted of interbedded coarse- and fine-grained soils to about 23 ft to 30 ft depth below the ground surface, underlain by carbonaceous shale (claystone) with interbedded sandstone. The overburden materials varied from very soft to medium stiff and loose to dense. The claystone was typically foliated and very weak to weak whereas the sandstone was typically massive and very weak to weak. The site characterization consisted of a variety of field and laboratory programs including soil borings with Standard Penetration Tests, pressure-meter testing, and geophysical testing. A load test program was performed involving the compressive, lateral, and tensile testing of piles ranging from 14-in to 24-in diameter. Compression test piles were instrumented with vibrating wire strain gages. The paper includes a discussion of the regional and local geologic and geotechnical parameters, particularly the results of the various in situ and laboratory test programs. The selected foundation system is introduced. Load test results are then presented along with analysis and discussion of these results with regard to performance of the piles in the claystone.

This paper presents a resume of the likely profitable mining areas in New Zealand. It covers the main "minerals" - gold, coal, oil and gas, ironsands, silica sands, clays, lump silica, perlite, sulphur and limestone.The potential mining projects are depicted on a map of New Zealand together with the associated works involved in hydro-electric and geothermal power development requirement for industries such as aluminium, nickel ferro-silicon or silicon carbide production.The political need for mining development to relieve unemployment and reverse emigration is stressed. A case is made for exploration and development assistance by government in labour re-training, energy supply and transportation, if the tremendous losses through lack of use of human and industrial resources are to be rapidly reduced. These losses are currently estimated at $10,000,000,000 per year.The need for protection of the sanctity of contract and security of tenure of all mining operations is touched on briefly as is the need for a reasonably balanced view on conservation. However as both of these are more properly covered in papers on the legal and environmental aspects of the mining climate they are presented here only as they affect the economy of the mining operation.Finally there is a brief comment on the mining climate in New Zealand relative to Australia and South Pacific mining operations.

Os cilindros de laminação sempre foram ferramentas utilizadas para estudos e desenvolvimentos técnicos em laminadores, uma vez que uma instabilidade em seu consumo pode indicar alterações ou problemas no processo. Especificamente nos laminadores de tiras a frio a instabilidade representada pelo aumento no consumo dos cilindros de trabalho indica alterações no processo, na matéria-prima ou até mesmo na qualidade do próprio cilindro. Na Laminação a Frio de Cubatão já foram realizados diversos trabalhos com foco na redução de consumo de cilindros, por se tratar de um insumo de custo elevado e influência direta na qualidade do material produzido. Com o mercado consumidor de aços planos cada vez mais exigente, foi necessário desenvolver novas qualidades de aço com resistências elevadas, espessuras menores e tolerâncias dimensionais mais restritas. Para atingir este nível de exigência tornou-se necessário o investimento em equipamentos modernos, e, sobretudo, promover alterações nos processos de fabricação para a sua adequação. São estas alterações que visam atender tais exigências que podem contribuir para o aumento do consumo de cilindros. Este trabalho tem como objetivo identificar as principais causas relacionadas ao aumento do consumo dos cilindros e buscar soluções para sua estabilização.

An airborne dust cloud is an ensemble of particles of varied size, density, shape and states of aggregation. An understanding and quantifying of the dispersion and deposition of the dust generated in mines is essential to the development of measures for reducing worker exposure to dust. In coal mining, the major portion of the dust is generated during the cutting of coal using either a shearer or a continuous miner. The major phenomenon affecting ambient concentration is the deposition of dust. Particle deposition may take place due to the effect of gravitational, inertial, electrostatic, and thermal forces, and mechanisms such as Brownian and eddy diffusion, and inertial impaction. The three major mechanisms of deposition in turbulent flow in mines are diffusion (Brownian and eddy), sedimentation and inertial impaction. The mechanisms determining particle deposition are size dependent.

]The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and the harbors on the James River routinely use precast concrete piles founded in the Yorktown formation to support bridges and other coastal structures. However, axial pile resistances for large diameter piles in this area have been historically overestimated on past projects. This may be due to a common assumption that very large unit end bearing resistance will be developed for a large diameter displacement pile that is driven a significant depth. This assumption is integrated in the Nordlund (1963; 1979) method which is commonly used to estimate axial pile resistance for bridge foundations. A static and dynamic pile load testing program was implemented as part of the Hampton Roads Bridge and Tunnel Expansion project in Norfolk, VA in the James River. A primary objective of this program was to calibrate an axial resistance calculation method against the measured load test results. A method developed by Eslami and Fellenius (1997) that uses CPTu data directly was effective at calibrating to the measured load test results, and allowed for clearer interpretation of the unit resistance values than indirect, semi-empirical methods that require interpretation of soil friction angle and undrained shear strength.

Due to the high pressures involved in the hydroforming process, friction and lubrication play an important role and can affect formability of the material. Tubes of A1Mg3.5Mn aluminum alloy, of 76.2 mm (3 inch) outside diameter and 2-mm thickness were considered in this study. Three kinds of lubricants, Al070, Hydrodraw711 and water, were applied to the tubes and tubes were hydroformed to burst in a square shape die cavity. The key process parameters were recorded during the tests. An in-house Gurson-Tvergaard-Needleman (GTN) damage-based material model, implemented in LS-DYNA, was used to model the process and predict the formability of this material. The applied axial loads and internal pressures recorded during the tests were used in the computations. The effect of different types of elements (solid and shell) with different constitutive models (von Mises and GTN models) in predicting the strain distribution is studied. The GTN damage-based material showed a good ability to capture necking and displacement histories in this process. Both predicted and measured results showed that the lubricant with lower coefficient of friction can effectively increase the comer expansion.

In attempting to study precipitation from a tetragonal lattice, using solid solutione of bismuth in tin, it was found that although a Widmanstätten pattern is observed1,4 only a qualitative analysis of the orientation relationships is possible, because of the unusual structural changes that accompany the precipitation process. Microscopical Studies Alloys were made from Chempur tin (Standard samples 42b and 426, National Bureau of Standards), and bismuth (Kahl-baum C.P.) by melting weighed quantities together under palm oil, stirring well, and castilig in a heated graphite mold. The polishing and etching techniques employed largely govern the visibility of the structural changes. The preliminary surfacing operations were similar to those recommended by Villela and Bergekoff,5 through Behr-Manning 3/0 abrasive papers, lubricated by a solution of paraffin in kerosene. A rough metallographic polish was next given, using a thin cotton cloth charged with relevigated alumina (maximum particle size of about 4µ) and soap solution; repeated etching and polishing served to remove disturbed metal. For high-power examination better preparation was necessary. It was found that on such soft metals the threads of the fabric, rather than the abrasive, cause most of the scratching. Cotton outing flannel, which had been brushed so that the nap lay down, was fairly satisfactory, but a heavy grade of silk velvet (not the noncrushable kind) was found to be better, especially after some use. A better procedure was as follows: The metal lap was warmed slightly, and a 4-in. circle of woolen broadcloth was cemented to its center by a thin film of melted paraffin. The broadcloth was then moistened with water, and a 30 to 40 per cent solution of sodium hydroxide heated to about 50°C. was poured over it, allowed to stand for I to 2 min. and then washed off. It was neither necessary nor desirable to remove all the sodium hydroxide from the cloth, since its etching action aided in the removal of the flowed layer from the sample. The cloth was then charged with a paste of the relevigated alumina in water. Since this lap did not remove deep scratches, it was necessary previously to polish the specimen on some material such as the silk velvet. The sodium hydroxide softens and partly gelatinizes the woolen lap covering, permitting a scratch-free polish, but its action continues, and the cloth deterioratcs after about 24 hr. This is not serious, because a new lap can be prepared in about 5 min., and only small pieces of cloth are used. Etching with a strongly acid solution of ferric chloride was found satisfactory for removing the flowed layer. For the final etching, the most satisfactory reagent was that of Tafls,7 the formula for which is: FeC13.6H2O, 2 grams; HC1, 5 c.c.; H2O, 30 c.c.; C2H5OH (95 per cent), 60 C.C. The 1806 zone is part of a Au-rich volcanogenic massive sulfide deposit at the Rambler Camp on the Baie \/erte Peninsula, northwestern Newfoundland, and is characterized by high Au grades (3.97 g/t), relatively low Cu and Zn grades (0.60 wt% Cu, 1.17 wt% Zn), and moderate Ag grades (27.83 g/t) at ca. 0.37 Mt ore. Gold and Ag occur as electrum and different Ag varieties including Ag-Hg ± Au alloys, miargyrite, and pyrargyrite that occur often in close proximity to electrum. Additionally, Ag-, As-, Sb-, and Sn-bearing sulfosalts are frequently observed and usually close to electrum. These textural relations strongly favor a syngenetic/magmatic origin for the 1806 zone, despite having a metamorphic overprint.

One of the latest applications of the Outokumpu Flash Smelting Technology is the direct smelting ,of nickel concentrates to metallised low-iron nickel mattes. Compared to the conventional nickel smelting, the new DON process needs a lower number of smelting vessels resulting in considerable economic and environmental benefits. Fundamentals of smelting nickel concentrates in one stage to low-iron mattes are presented. Properties of nickel. smelting slags with an emphasis of the slag fluidity at high MgO-levels are also discussed. Conditions prevailing in DON mattes at high oxidation degrees are presented as well as their influence on the behaviour of such mattes in the settler and on tapping the furnace. Distributions of elements in the direct smelting are presented and compared with the conventional process. A further comparison is made with pilot-plant data and the industrial scale.

Determining moisture content and rate of flow of a solid product make measurement and control of dryers unusually difficult. This paper de-scribes a method of accomplishing this with readily made air-temperature measurements. The system can cope with changes in feed moisture and feed rate. It does not measure solids temperature. The system's application to several typical rotary dryers is described, and control schemes using feedforward techniques are explained.

The Geita Gold Mine is located 80 km southwest of the town of Mwanza in the north-west of Tanzania and is 100 per cent owned by AngloGold Ashanti Limited. Open pit mining commenced at Geita in 2000. In 2011, the operation produced 494 000 oz at a cash cost of US$536/oz. This is a significant improvement from 2008, when 264 000 oz were produced at a cash cost of US$742/oz.A period of relatively poor operating performance at Geita was recorded over the period from 2006 to 2009. A period known at Geita as æthe turnaroundÆ commenced in 2009, and has been remarkable to say the least. Over the last couple of years the mine has embarked on a journey, which saw various interventions and initiatives. Among the key initiatives were Project ONE (which focuses on business process framework, systems for people and safety transformation), asset integrity, fatigue management and contract mining of satellite pits.Since the commencement of the turnaround at Geita, gold production has matched market guidance. The mine has returned to positive cash flow on the basis of strong performance on cash management, improved production and increased gold price.This paper explains some of the details of the mine operationsÆ improvements, how they were implemented, their relative contributions to improved mining performance and the path ahead to best practice. The Cadia Mine is located 25kms South West of Orange in the central west of New South Wales (NSW), Australia (Figure 1). Orange is a major regional centre with a population of 35,000 people. Cadia has a history of mining and exploration dating back to 1851 and shortly after the first Australian gold rush at Ophir, north of Orange. Newcrest Mining commenced an exploration program at Cadia Hill in 1992. This identified a substantial zone of copper and gold mineralization. Subsequent resource definition drilling defined an orebody with a mineable reserve of 200 million tonnes of ore with an average gold grade of 0.74g/t and 0.17\ copper. A full feasibility study commenced in 1994, approvals to proceed with development were granted in September 1996 and the processing plant was commissioned in July 1998. The project came in on budget at A$440 million and on time, 24 months from design to construction. The estimated operating cost at the time of commissioning was A$8.85/t of mill feed.

The Denali Prospect (147° 08' 20" W, 63° 08' 50" N) is located on the south flank of the Alaska Range in the Clearwater Mountains in south central Alaska. (See Figure 1). The mineralization was discovered in 1963 and surface explora¬tion began the following summer. Surface trenching and diamond drilling were used to locate and sample the mineralized zones. In 1969, an adit totalling approximately 1400 feet was completed. In 1970, a -15% grade decline approximately 1800 feet long was completed. Further diamond drilling was done along with both underground programs. Although much work remains to be done to properly evaluate the prospect, results from all the work to date are quite encouraging. This paper will consider the geology of the prospect and the surrounding area, some- aspects of the geochemistry of the sulfides, and the origin of the sulfide deposits. This paper includes data from this writer's Ph. D. dissertation, "Geology and Geochemistry of the Denali Prospect, Clearwater Mountains Alaska" from the University of Alaska and subsequent work.

The cost of transporting mineral raw materials and products will receive greater attention in the next 10-20 years because raw material sources and markets are changing. Today, shipping costs may equal 20%-80% of the landed or delivered cost of raw materials and products. Companies are learning that total costs are what count to the company and customers. Transportation has historically been priced at "What the traffic would bear" and little real effort has been made to analyze the shippers problem and provide them with effective and low cost transportation. This climate existed in both ocean and rail transport. The shiplines and railroads did not understand the shipper's problems and few shippers understood transportation and how to buy it. Recently more consideration has been given to the advantages between the American Merchant Marine- American Flag and Foreign flag vessels. The discussions held focused on what action is desirable to encourage American flag operations. Based on extensive studies made by both A. E. Gibson, Maritime Administrator and R. J. Blackwell, Deputy Maritime Administrator, the resulting statistics show that the potential for ocean transport is as follows: U. S. Foreign trade is estimated at 620 million long tons annually in the early 1980's. It was 418 million tons in 1968. In 1968 only 6.4% of the U.S. ocean borne trade was carried on American Flag vessels. About 50 million tons of early 1980's trade will go ill container ships. That leaves over 500 million tons to go as bulk or "neo-bulk" cargo.
