A eficiência operacional é um fator essencial para garantir a competitividade das empresas. O desafio é estudar os processos de forma a aumentar a sua produtividade sem necessidade de investimento, gerando valor as empresas. O equipamento estudado, a Linha de Inspeção é o gargalo na produção limitando a geração de produtos em volume ou qualidade. As etapas eleitas para estudo foram os setup’s das atividades de inicio (encaixe) e final (desencaixe) do processo, atividades não automatizadas, com maior intervenção humana que sofrem interferência direta dos tempos e métodos praticados pelos operadores. Utilizando o método dedutivo, tendo como ferramenta de apoio, a pesquisa bibliográfica para fundamentação teórica e realizadas observações de campo, determinou-se os melhores tempos para realização das atividades visando a sua otimização. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo modificar o método operacional nesta Linha de Inspeção visando o aumento da eficiência produtiva, aumentando a geração dos laminados à frio. O trabalho comprovou que a mudança do modo operacional proporciona um incremento de 8% na produção (1.800t/mes).

"FROM THE BEGINNING OF THE PIT, it was known that the surface mining method had a projected life of about ten years, and that the ore extended to depths recoverable only by underground mining. When serious consideration was given to underground mining in 1968, it was realized that tremendous advantages could be gained by starting the underground mine as early as• poss1ble. These included: 1. The availability of underground ore for grade control, which would become more difficult as the pit deepened. 2. The need to develop new systems, equipment and skills to take full advantage of the technological revolution in underground mining. 3. Early knowledge of rock behaviour through trial mining on a small scale prior to finalizing plans for major blocks. In addition, the pit would be available to guarantee the mill supply if problems were encountered. 4. With sufficient time and early mining experience a much better job could be done on all mine planning. Because ample reserves of economic underground ore were virtually assured, the desired underground mining capability became a function of two restraints: first, the time required to excavate and construct the permanent headframe, shaft and ore-handling facilities necessary to handle large volumes of stope ore; second, the time for lateral and stope development on at least one level which would normally follow shaft sinking. The decision made was to move immediately on the permanent hoisting installations and at the same time embark on the planned ramp from surface, which would allow much stope preparation to be completed prior to .bringing the shaft on stream. Both projects were placed on an urgent basis early in 196S' and the following decisions made shortly thereafter."

When selecting a method for monitoring crack growth in pipeline steel, the sensitivity or crack-size resolution plays a dominant role. Even though there are several visual and non-visual methods, the direct current potential drop (DCPD) method is very effective for monitoring crack growth because of its resolution. This method has been used for the past few decades and has gained increasingly wide acceptance in fracture research as one of the most accurate and efficient methods for monitoring the propagation of cracks. Furthermore, most R&D experience has proven that the electrical potential method can be used in most "aggressive" environments. For these reasons, the DCPD method was selected to design a testing machine to monitor corrosion fatigue crack growth. The use of finite-element modelling is shown to facilitate the application of the DCPD method for monitoring crack growth in steels. The 2D model calibration provided a good description of the test data and proved more accurate than the analytic Johnson's formula.

The Goro Nickel Project is situated in the Southern Province of New Caledonia. Inco Limited and Goro Nickel S.A. have developed a process that features the use of pyrohydrolysis to produce nickel oxide. The process treats a blend of laterites by Pressure Acid Leaching followed by solvent extraction of nickel and cobalt using Cyanex 301®. Purified nickel chloride solution is converted to high purity NiO product and 6M hydrochloric acid, which is recycled back to the SX circuit. In co-operation with Andritz AG, spray roaster and fluid-bed pyrohydrolysis technologies were examined for this purpose. Tests were conducted at the Andritz AG pilot plant in Vienna, Austria, and at Goro in larger scale installations. The latter served to establish process engineering design parameters for scale-up. Several process variables were investigated in both technologies and the off-gas characteristics were established. Fluid-bed pyrohydrolysis was selected for the Goro commercial plant, primarily because it produced a granular nickel oxide. The main focus of this paper is to outline the results obtained in pilot plant studies of liquid fueled fluid bed pyrohydrolysis for the Goro Project. "The slag fuming process has operated for close to 70 years to recover zinc from lead blast furnace slag. The process is normally carried out through the batch treatment of slag by submerged injection of coal and air. Within the bath the coal acts as both a reductant, to reduce Zno to zinc vapour, and a fuel, to maintain bath temperature during the endothermic reduction process. The partition of coal between the slag, combustion and bypass is dependent on factors such as bath depth and injection pressure. The option of continuous fuming has been pursued at the D. Blagoev smelter in Bulgaria using heavy fuel oil as reductant/fuel. There has, however, been little attempt at commercial continuous fuming with coal. This paper presents an analysis of a coal-based continuous slag fuming furnace. The data on the Plovdiv fumer is used as a reference point. Critical design criteria for continuous fuming include the slag feed rate, degree of coal combustion and furnace size. Mathematical modelling analysis suggests that continuous fuming with coal can achieve respectable zinc/coal ratios.IntroductionThe slag fuming process was developed in the early part of this century to recover zinc from non-ferrous smelting slags [1-3]. The majority of installed furnaces were put in place to fume zinc from lead blast furnace slag on a batch basis. In most cases coal is used to effect reduction of zinc oxide, but one furnace uses natural gas [4] and, in a curious twist, a continuous fumer was developed based on fuel oil [5].Given the general nature of blast furnace lead smelting, it is not surprising that slag fuming has remained a batch process, in spite of the advantages that could be gained by moving to continuous fuming. Blast furnaces are usually operated as relatively independent units, and tapping has traditionally been done into ladles. The presence of a crane aisle makes direct coupling of the blast furnace to a slag fumer difficult, especially in a retrofit situation. Furthermore, steady-state blast furnace operation is not easy to achieve. The size of these furnaces and the nature of their feed make it difficult to guarantee constant operation."

This paper describes results of laboratory studies on recovery of dissolved uranium values from alkaline leach slurries of a medium-grade uranium ore from Gogi (Karnataka, India) using the resin-in-pulp (RIP) process. Besides anionic carbonate complex of uranium, the other major ionic constituents of the leach solution are CO32-, HCO3-, SO42- and MoO42-. The total dissolved solutes (TDS) are about 45 g/L. Various commercially available strong bases anionic resin-in-pulp (RIP) grade resins ? both macroporous and gel type, were studied with respect to their loading capacity. Parametric variation studies were then carried out with the short-listed resins. Results of the semi-continuous counter-current extraction and elution tests indicated extraction efficiency of about 98% and practically complete elution of the loaded uranium values with NaCl eluant using a gel type polystyrene based resin grafted with quaternary ammonium ion. A fim de se evitar os danos causados pela corrosão, cresce cada vez mais o uso do aço galvanizado. Durante o processo de galvanização a quente ou por eletrodeposição é gerado um resíduo sólido perigoso conhecido por lama galvânica cujo descarte se trata de um processo oneroso. Sendo assim, as principais rotas de gerenciamento desse resíduo foram levantadas no presente trabalho, visando contribuir com a economia e aumento da sustentabilidade desse setor industrial. Ultimamente a lama galvânica é considerada uma matéria-prima potencial por conter metais com valor comercial presentes em concentrações elevadas, e isso tem estimulado pesquisas de rotas de recuperação desses teores metálicos. Paralelamente, a fim de resolver o problema de gestão do resíduo, estudos buscam rotas alternativas de descarte que visem estabilizar os elementos tóxicos e reutilizar a lama como matéria-prima em outro processo industrial.

The concurrent observation of the phenomena of alkali-aggregate reaction and development of efficient dust collection systems on rotary kilns made mandatory the process modifications to produce low alkali cements. Such low alkali cements as were available prior to these recent changes were either the rare result of low alkali raw materials, the loss of alkalies with dust loss from the kiln stack, or in some instances by the use of CaC12 in the kiln feed to increase volitalization of the alkalies and their subsequent loss or discard with the normal dust emission from the kiln. The relative slowly soluble nature of natural occurring alkali minerals in cement raw materials as compared to the very soluble nature of the alkali salts as present in cement kiln reaction products, either in clinker or in dust emission led to the development of the water leaching system. Two distinctly different problems of leaching are created by the two major systems of portland cement production, the wet and dry processes. The wet process is characterized by moderate dust loads and concentration of soluble forms of alkali in the dust. Further the return of the leached dust slurry does not materially change the characteristics of kiln feed on reintroduction and subsequently does not materially influence kiln operation. The dry process differs in high levels of dust emission and the presence in the collected dust of large amounts of unreacted kiln feed with its sparingly soluble alkali minerals. In the dry process reintroduction of leached dust slurry changes the dry process to what may be classed as a damp process. This change results in some decrease in kiln capacity and creates conditions of operation which are uncommon to either the wet or dry process.

Environmentally assisted cracks in linepipe steels are initiated either as a result of stresses in combination with environmental effects, as in stress corrosion cracking (SCC), or as a result of trapped hydrogen in the steel, as in hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC). To understand better the mechanism of the crack initiation process, key metallurgical and environmental elements that can affect the cracking phenomena were investigated and are reviewed in this paper. The complexity of both cracking phenomena results from the dependence of SCC and HIC on multiple metallurgical, mechanical, and environmental parameters that may all influence both crack initiation and propagation; e.g., composition, microstructure and non-metallic inclusions in the steel, applied stress, water chemistry in the field, and ionic concentrations in the groundwater near the pipe surface to name a few for SCC. In addition, for HIC phenomena, one can add the concentration of H2S in the fluids transported in the pipe as well as concentration of CO2, pH, etc. In this paper, cracking of linepipe steels is analyzed critically, with particular attention to the crack initiation process. The paper is divided into two parts: The first part covers SCC and the second covers HIC.

As reservas de minério de ferro, apresentam tendências de menores teores de Fe, tornando maior a necessidade da redução da fração granulométrica inferior a 150µm, o que torna o processo viável tecnicamente por meio concentração. O método mais comum utilizado é a concentração através da flotação. Flotação é uma técnica de separação baseada na afinidade das espécies minerais com as moléculas de água. Na flotação reversa de minério de ferro, utilizam-se agentes que reforçam o caráter hidrofílico das partículas de Ferro, chamados de depressores. O mais comumente utilizado é o amido de milho em forma de solução, gelatinizado com a adição de soda cáustica. Dentro desse contexto e afim de aumentar o poder de gelatinização do depressor, foram realizados através do planejamento fatorial estatístico, ensaios de flotação em bancada, com diferentes concentrações iniciais e finais de amido de milho presente na solução e ainda a relação de amido/soda para avaliar o impacto sobre a recuperação metalúrgica da flotação, concluindo-se que recuperação metálica foram fortemente influenciados pela concentração inicial da solução de amido.

A key operation of any milling circuit is grinding. Over the last two decades, large diameter semiautogenous grinding (SAG) mills have become the preferred primary grinding mills. The drive systems became more complex as the size of the mills became larger, during which time operating and design experience for SAG mill accumulated. Considerable reliance is now placed in power electronics to provide flexibility in SAG mill operation to meet the demands of lower operating costs. Most earlier SAG mills were designed to operate at fixed speeds. Present day SAG mills can operate at a fixed speed or variable speed through the use of an ac synchronous motor or dc motor. This flexibility, however, comes with an increase in capital and operating costs. Since the capital and operating costs of a project directly affect the project's rate of return, the selection of a SAG mill and its drive system should depend, in part, on the impact that the extra cost makes on the project. This impact can be measured by performing an economic analysis based on net present cost (NPC) calculations. Although the NPC calculation is an important factor in the grinding mill selection, other factors, such as reliability of mill drives and power source, are important elements in the decision making process. This article examines how the NPC calculation, plus reliability and power source, influence SAG mill selection.

This is one of a series of reports prepared by the Federal Bureau of Mines on mining methods, performance, and costs at individual mines in the United States. The primary purpose of these papers is to promote development and conservation of our mineral resources by disseminating technological information on methods, practices, and results that may be applied to the engineering analysis and solution of mining problems. This report discusses the highly selective mining methods of the Jaquays Mining Corp. at the Regal asbestos mine, 45 road miles northeast of Globe, Ariz. The milling method at the Globe plant is discussed briefly, and the extraction ratios of the various grades of fiber are tabulated. The proposed flowsheet of a new mill under construction is shown.

This paper presents the TMT “3D TopScan” profilemeter, which is a Radar-based profilemeter that measures the total burden surface within a few seconds and on a continuous basis. This equipment is based on an electronically steered solid-state radar scanner, such that a very large amount of surface data is collected within short time intervals. These new electronically steered antenna systems are the key to meet the demands for both accuracy and speed. The TMT probe is installed at a fixed location at the top cone, such that it does not interfere with the charging, enabling a continuous measurement and a compact design.Blast furnace charging optimization can be achieved based on its measurement data. The burden surface is continuously measured every few seconds, enabling the blast furnace operator to detect any details including asymmetries or irregularities in the surface pattern. A variety of process analysis tools are available. Due to the continuous and fast measurement, the burden descent speed can be supervised without process interruption on an ongoing basis. More accurate process models (layer models) than ever are obtained which fully consider the unsymmetries.This technology, developed by TMT Tapping Measuring Technology, is successfully in operation at Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH at their blast furnace B. The probe and the data evaluation tools combine today’s technological capabilities in measurement technology with the practical requirements of blast furnace operation.

A crescente demanda por energia elétrica nas aeronaves modernas pode ser constatada pelo aumento da potência elétrica gerada a bordo, como exemplo o Boeing 787 produz 1000kVA, 200V trifásico, 400Hz variável contra 240kVA, 200V trifásico, 400Hz fixo produzido pelo Airbus A330, apesar de possuírem aproximadamente as mesmas dimensões. Devido à necessidade de redução de massa de transformadores, a frequência utilizada na geração de eletricidade na aeronave é de 400Hz o que acaba produzindo um aumento das perdas em núcleos de FeSi destes transformadores, principalmente pelo aumento das correntes parasitas no núcleo. Transformadores elétricos com núcleos de ligas amorfas a base de Fe vêm apresentando redução de até 70% das perdas no núcleo quando operados em 50Hz ou 60Hz. Assim, esse estudo visa discutir as vantagens e desvantagens do uso de transformadores elétricos com núcleos de ligas amorfas a base de Fe em aeronaves. Os resultados mostram que, com o desenvolvimento de novas ligas, tal utilização mostra-se viável devido a uma redução de peso de tais transformadores.

Em coquerias, o período compreendido entre o início de operação até a desativação devido final de vida útil é relativamente longo. Torna-se tarefa muito difícil determinar-se o tempo exato de desativação por degradação uma vez que as coquerias possuem muitos fornos tipo batelada e o grau individual de degradação varia de acordo com as condições operacionais e método de preservação aplicados. Apesar dos cuidados adotados na operação e manutenção das coquerias, torna-se inevitável um desgaste inexorável em suas estruturas com o passar dos anos, com progressivo decréscimo na capacidade eficaz de produção até a sua paralisação. Tendo em vista o elevado custo envolvido na construção de novas coquerias, torna-se prioridade para as siderúrgicas prolongarem ao máximo a vida útil das baterias existentes, adotando o tipo de reparo adequado a cada fase da vida da bateria. O presente trabalho tem o objetivo de descrever os tipos de reparo em baterias de coque disponíveis, visando restaurar as estruturas e recuperar a capacidade produtiva das coquerias, respeitando as normas ambientais vigentes.

"High performance production under challenging geological conditions is a product of several parameters. Main factors are the technical equipment and the knowledge in processing. The design and the support system of maingates must also be taken into consideration. The extraction of seams in German underground hard coal mines of RAG in a range of heights between approximately 1.1 and 4.0 m ( 4 and 13 ft) is done by plow and shearer technology. A complete system for quality management of production is required. The process examination of processes begins with procurement of the equipment. Education and training of the engineers and specialists, as well as for the miners are requirements for success as well.This report gives an overview of RAG measures for achieving high performance. Starting with examination of the processes accompanying procurement of equipment, the following important elements are described. Standards in education and training, technical design and elements of automated processing using stateof- the-art in control systems are critical to this system.The application of automation plays a decisive role in modem coal mines. The latest development in German coal mines is the fully-automated shearer system for longwalls. This helps to enhance safety, particularly in difficult ground conditions, by removing the shearer and shield operators from the immediate mining activity.INTRODUCTIONLongwall mining in carboniferous strata in Germany faces various challenges. Different longwall systems are used to mine up to 24 seams, each with a thickness between 1.1 m (3.6 ft) and 4.0 m (13 ft). High stresses due to a depth of up to 1,400 m (4,593 ft) requiring pillars between the panels, require special systems for roadway development, roadway support and reinforcemen.t as well as for longwall advance operations. Two main types of equipment for extraction are shearer and plow systems. While shearers are utilized for seam thicknesses above approximately 1.8 m (6 ft), plow systems can be used for smaller seam thicknesses between 1.8 m (6 ft) and approximately 1.0 m (3 ft)."

O algaraviz é uma parte importante do sistema de sopro de um Alto-Forno, utilizado para direcionar o sopro e combustíveis injetados para a ventaneira, por conseguinte o interior do forno. O algaraviz consiste em uma caraça metálica revestida de material refratário com resistência ao calor e uma camada de isolante térmico entre o refratário e a carcaça. Falhas em serviço de algaravizes costumam a gerar grandes danos materiais, financeiros e com grande risco à vida dos operadores, por isso o controle e inspeção da integridade estrutural e térmica dos algaravizes é de suma importância. A inspeção nos algaravizes é realizada a fim de se detectar precocemente pontos quentes que são indicativos de falhas estruturais no algaraviz. Portanto este artigo foi feito um modelo numérico de transferência de calor, a fim de se averiguar as condições do algaraviz, de forma a verificar se o algaraviz em condições normais de operação mantem as condições térmicas. O modelo revelou resultados satisfatórios de forma que em comparação com resultados de inspeções em peças em operação se obteve um erro de cerca de 8%.
