The Bureau of Mines conducted a series of ignition tests with two types of conical bits (plumb bob and pencil) used on continuous mining machines, to determine their ignition potential at various bit speeds, cut depths, and wear conditions. The tests were conducted using single bits mounted on a 34-in-diam drum in a Bureau ignition test facility. The bits impacted blocks of Berea sandstone in a 6.5 pet methane atmosphere at various bit speeds and cut depths. In a new condition, the plumb bob bits were considerably more incendive than the pencil bits, causing ignitions in 32 of 35 tests at 60 rpm, compared with ignitiolls in 2 of 22 tests for the pencil bits. The results from new bit testing also show that reduction of bit tip velocity to 180 fpm does not eliminate ignition potential. When subjected to progressive wear, bits of both types were more incendive when they were locked in place, unable to rotate, than when they were free to rotate.

(written discussion*).-In Mr. Burke Baker's description of the process of the American Briquet Co., he speaks only of the attractive features, but every process which uses a compound or emulsified binder has certain undesirable features which must be considered. In making an emulsion, the success of which depends upon the introduction of the various ingredients at certain fixed temperatures and the complete intermixing of a soluble solution with an oil which has absolutely no affinity for it, considerable difficulty is found in keeping the various factors in strict accordance with the formula. To serve its purpose properly or, in other words, to be right for easy mixing with the coal, it should be of a certain predetermined density. Among the controlling factors of this ate the proportion of moisture contained and the temperature of the oil when introduced. If the latter is higher than intended, a greater proportion of moisture will be evaporated than is proper, and if the oil is not sufficiently hot the process of emulsification is retarded. These various factors can be controlled with more or less certainty where working in a laboratory or in a small experimental way, but when it is attempted on a large commercial scale, certain obstacles not otherwise apparent are likely to be encountered.

THERE was an, extensive mining and industrial exploitation of Russia, about 20 years ago, by Belgian, French and British capitalists; but the results were discouraging. It is said that the Belgian and French public together lost approximately $400,000,000, chiefly in the coal and iron industry of southern Russia. This loss is largely accounted for by the fact that most of the companies were formed, as usual in " boom " times, to sell stock; and that thorough investigations were not made. In 1906, renewed interest was taken in Russian mines, especially in those of gold and copper, and a considerable literature is growing on this subject; but as yet I have seen no account of one of the large Russian mining estates. The following notes on such property, where the conditions are so different from those in the mining regions of the United States, should be of interest This inadequate and probably somewhat inaccurate account is made up, partly from my own notes made on the ground, in the summers of 1904 and 1905, and partly from a volume on the geology and resources of the estate issued several years ago, containing surface-and mine-maps, and from a pamphlet published in 1904, giving a general account of the condition and prospects of the property. This pamphlet includes a report made by Arthur L. Pearse, a member of this Institute, in 1899. Both these books are in Russian, and were prepared by the Bogoslovsk Mining Co., which owns and operates the property. Articles in many other languages have appeared dealing with various matters connected with the estate; but I know of no other general account of it. This paper presents an experimental study conducted to facilitate the use of RFID on construction job sites. The study focuses on deployment settings to provide data acquisition with higher accuracy for indoor location sensing. It provides extension to the state-of-the-art in this field as it addresses the impact of metal media proximity to RFID tags, the reasonable duration for data capturing, number of RFID tags employed and the distance between them. Low cost passive RFID tags were used in the experiments where each tag is used as a reference point with a known location. Five hundred and forty (514) experiments were conducted in lab environment using a 3m by 3m test bed that is dynamically rearranged to generate 15 test beds and a total of 67713 data sets were collected and analyzed. The collected data were captured from nine locations for each test bed at four time intervals. Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) was used as the main attribute for signal measurement to process the captured data. Results of the data analysis performed are studied under four main categories: duration, number of tags, locations of tags and metal interference. The best duration was found to be the 15 second in the test bed with the least number of tags; as the short amount of time to capture data did not allow creation of a lot of interference among the emitted signals. Within each test bed, errors occurred most at points where the received signals were not well distributed in a 360 degree vicinity of the data capturing point. It means that the center point of each test bed resulted in lowest errors and the points located on the extremities led to the highest errors. Finally, metal objects were found to have major impact on the accuracy of the captured data; to the level where reliable values for errors could not be calculated in the test beds attached to metal objects. In summary, the results of the experimental study and related findings are expected to provide guidelines to the users of RFID technology for localization in building construction.

The Sumitomo Toyo Copper Smelter started operation in 1971, as an epoch-making smelter at which 9996 of the charged sulfur could be captured. In the past ten years, the amount of treated copper concentrate has-been increased from 1,300 l/ day to 1;900 t/ day by the extremely effective application of the oxygen enrichment for a flash smelting furnace and converter furnace. The sulfuric acid production capacity at the acid plant has also been increased up to 1,900 t/ day corresponding to the increase of copper concentrate smelting rate without installing an additional acid plant. Furthermore the sulfur fixed ratio is kept at a high level, more than 99.996. despite the SO. strength fluctuation of the wide range of 596 to 1396 which is attributed to the combination of flash smelting furnace and, P.S. converter. These -operational results at the? acid plant were achieved by several modifications. and two examples are briefly described as follows; (1) Converter modifications in order to cope with the high SO, strength -gas (2) Introduction of the anodically protection shell and tube type acid coolers In addition. the quality of sulfuric acid has been positively increased. For example, the concentration of iron and arsenic, which were the main Impurities in ?sulfuric acid, was successfully .reduced.

THE earliest mention of the sulphur deposits in what is now Culberson County, Texas, seems to be contained in "Explorations and Surveys for a Railroad Route from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean, United States War Department, 1853-54." Captain John Pope (he was not commissioned Captain until 1856) had charge of one of the divisions of the Survey. In his report on the geology of the route, William P. Blake noted the analysis of a greenish earthy powder from the bed of Delaware Creek, at the springs, which contained 18.28 per cent. of free sulphur. The report states: "From the chemical examination of the waters of the spring, by Dr. Booth, it appears that chloride of sodium is the principal solid ingredient, but considerable quantities of sulphide of sodium are present. * * * * * The waters from the springs examined by Dr. Booth were alkaline, but it is possible that some of the springs are acid; and in this case the precipitation of sulphur would ensue on the mixture of the acid waters with those charged with alkaline sulphurets and the origin of the deposits of sulphur would he thus explained." This is the first reference to the existence of sulphur in that region, the first mention of the character of the water found there and the first suggestion as to the' origin of the deposits. The possibility of the existence of acid waters was confirmed by E. M. Skeats, nearly 50 years later.1 In this publication, Skeats says that the water from the sulphur deposits in Section 11, Block 114,, Township 5, contains 79.08 grains of free sulphuric acid per gallon. This locality is about 13 miles (21 km.) south of Delaware Creek and about 35-miles (56 km.) east of the Delaware Springs. The next published reference to the existence of sulphur in Trans-Pecos Texas is in the First. Annual Report of the Geological Survey of Texas, 1889, page 226, where W. H. von Streeruwitz mentions that sulphur is found in that region, but gives no further information. In the

The stresses which initiate deformation processes in metals are fundamentally important in the study of the mechanical properties of metals. A point of inflection in the load-elongation curves obtained for single crystals' has been rather too readily interpreted as a true yield point, and the critical resolved shearing stress on the plane of slip taken as a material constant. Even early work showed that the stress at this point varies with rate of loading, but it has not been generally appreciated that creep tests under static loads alone are suited for determining the existence or nonexistence of a yield point.* It has now been shown by Miller that single crystals of zinc3 when loaded statically begin to yield at loads too small to measure; as a result there is no case now known, apart from that cited in the present paper, in which a true critical stress for yielding has been demonstrated for single crystals of metals. The case of iron has especial interest: the existence of an upper and lower yield point and of an elongation at the yield point in ordinary iron and steel marks this substance as unusual, though the effects have been found to a very minor degree in other metals and alloys. $ Most alloys do not show such marked phenomena when appreciable yielding begins, and accordingly modern practice is to speak of the yield strength of such materials, a stress read from the load-elongation curve after elongation has begun, rather than yield point. The special behavior of iron suggests that it is more likely that single crystals of iron should have a true yield point than other metals. The study of the mechanical properties of metals and alloys requires a determination of the crystallographic mechanism of deformation, wlletller deformation proceeds by slip, twinning, or cleavage, or a combination of these, and a determination of the stresses that induce these modes of deformation. The operating mine is dynamic, everchanging, and a continuous moving target. The only way to effectively manage such a creature is to be able to evaluate the cost of operation over short enough time periods that rapid effective controls can be implemented before loss can erode the marginal profits in todays market place. Such short term evaluations can provide the basis for the long range planning that can keep an operation healthy in the future. The spreadsheet programs on small computers (PC's) offer the possibility of such evaluation by accumulating data in a useable format, providing timely cost reporting and providing a tool for use in evaluating the day to day alternative choices of the real mining world.

INTRODUCTION Face haulage in underground mines and pit haulage in surface mines are the principal domains of rubber- tired haulage vehicles. In underground mines, cable- reeled or battery-operated shuttle cars and diesel-powered load-haul-dump vehicles are used; trucks are primarily used in surface mines. Although many concerns go into the selection of rubber-tired haulage vehicles, such as clearance and tire life, the most important factor from a mine-planning standpoint is the production capability of the vehicle in the mine environment. Therefore, this chapter will address this topic. UNDERGROUND FACE-HAULAGE VEHICLES The selection process for underground face-haulage vehicles is, in some respects, much simpler than that of the other haulage systems discussed to this point. It is simpler because these vehicles, which transfer the mined material from the face to the intermediate haul¬age system, are manufactured in various size ranges to cope with the confinement of underground opening widths and heights. However, since these vehicles oper¬ated in an intermittent fashion in conjunction with a constantly advancing face, the system's lack of perma¬nence and overall dynamic nature create a more diffi¬cult situation for predicting productivity. The emphasis in this section will be on prediction of productivity. There are three fundamental steps that must be taken to analyze the productivity potential of any face¬haulage system: l) Recognize the geologic (seam thickness, etc. ) and mining (opening widths, etc.) constraints that affect the velocity/clearance aspects of the haulage equipment, and select equipment from manufacturers' specifications with these con¬straints in mind. 2) Secure the elemental times of the face-haulage system. 3) Incorporate the elemental times into an accepta¬ble mine plan. By recognizing the geologic and mining constraints that affect the system layout, parameters, such as vehi¬cle payload, tonnage to be hauled per cut, and haulage distances, can easily be determined. Elemental times can be developed in two ways: 1) In an existing operation, a time study of the dynamic system can be conducted by placing three time-study engineers at the following static locations; (1) near the loading machine, (2) near the change-out point outby the face, and (3) near the dump. By synchronizing their watches and recording the actions of the haulage vehicles at these three locations, their time studies can be reduced to provide elemental times, such as vehicle tram rates (empty or loaded), vehicle discharge times, and loading rates. 2) In the absence of an existing operation, average values for the elemental times can be provided from other mines operating in similar condi¬tions, or by the manufacturers themselves.

INTRODUCTION For many tailings ponds, particularly those having substantial watershed areas, the control of pond water levels will be a major factor influencing the operation of the pond and the design and construction of the dam retaining the pond. This paper summarizes the basic factors affecting the control of water in tailings ponds, methods of water control, and methods of estimating the variables involved. The influences that pond water levels can have on the design, construction, and stability of tailings dams are explained in order to emphasize the importance of water control in the overall planning of mine tailings disposal systems. Two examples of pond water control planning conclude the paper. BASIC FACTORS The principal factors influencing the control of water in tailings ponds are illustrated on Fig. 1. Fig. 1 (a) shows the general disposition of the tailings solids and water in the pond; the solids settle from the slurry to form "slimes", deposits sloping down into the pond from the points of discharge; these slimes hold volumes of water in the voids between solid particles; water in excess of this "retained" water forms a pool of "free" water laying over the slimes deposits. In some cases, tailings solids (and water) go to the tailings dam for its construction. Fig. 1 (b) indicates those ways additional to tailings disposal in which the pond gains or loses water. These include surface and sub-surface runoff from the pond watershed, water reclaimed from the pond for ore processing, evaporation, and seepage. Seepage losses sometimes include water draining from tailings sand placed in the dam, but a portion of the total seepage flow is often collected and returned to the pond in order to avoid downstream pollution and to recover water for re-use. PRINCIPAL REQUIREMENTS In relation to the control of water in a tailings pond, the first requirement is usually to maintain a pool sufficiently large to ensure adequate clarification of the free water prior to its reclaim for use in the mill, or its discharge from the pond.

Consideration of the processing plant operational envelope is a key factor in production scheduling,and therefore mine planning, for any mining operation. In many cases hard-wired or regressionbased tonnage-grade-recovery relationships are used as mine planning constraints and as a means of valuing the system output. In extensions of this type of approach, various regressions can be used to describe throughput limits, based on a number of global metallurgical parameters.The ultimate position for the optimisation of a mine plan and production schedule is to have a full process plant model running as an integrated part of the mine planning exercise. A plant model suitable for this needs to have all the required sensitivities to input parameters such asfragmentation, grade, mineralogy, strength and hardness. The model then needs to convert these to performance measures for the plant, which include recovery, throughput, product size distributions, energy consumption, water use and operating cost.In this paper an approach is outlined that takes this view and then goes beyond it to provide a full, time-based bottleneck identifi cation and valuation tool.Using such an approach it becomes possible to run mine plans and production schedules in windows of days, weeks, months and over the life-of-mine with a time-enabled process model acting as the active constraint. In this way virtual bottlenecks can be identifi ed for various mine plans and schedules well ahead of time. The new Bunker Hill slag-treatment plant, designed ior, a capacity of 300 to 400 tons of hot slag per day, was "blown in" April 5, 1943. In the ensuing I5-months period, 157,530 tons of slag was processed, with an average recovery of over go per cent of the zinc and practically all of the lead contained. In addition to this high metal recovery, utilization of the waste heat in the gas and fume venting, the process has enabled the generation of 231,376 tons of steam at 250-lb, gauge. Over the first six months opcration the volume of slag treated averaged somewhat under 300 tons per day. Reclaimed dump slag made up only about 1 5 per cent of the plant feed. In October 1943, preparations for the smelting of additional tonnages of dump slag were completed and the plant capacity was increased to an average of about 420 tons of slag per day. During the nine-months interval since that date, monthly averages of 450 toils per operating day have been maintained several times. The new plant (Fig. I) is constructed in close proximity to blast-furnace operations. The fuming furnace and other necessary equipment are housed in an eastward extension of the existing blast-furnace building. Beyond this housed extension the dust-laden gas is conveyed about the perimeter of a large rectangle formed by the flues, cooling towers and baghouses. The course of a 10-ft. balloon flue, which transports the fuming furnace gas, describes the west and south perimeters. This flue connects with a set of cooling towers located at the southeast comer. The flue and cooling-tower system serving the deleading kiln constitute the north side and the two baghouses, serving the kiln and furnace operations, -border the east side. From these baghouses the several discharge gas flows are come biped and conveyed in to the rectangle, being vented to atmosphere by means of a fan through a centrally located zoo-ft. brick stack. In general, the plant design and operation follow quite closely that dictated by experience gained in years of slag-fuming practice by the Anaconda Copper Mining Go., at East Helena, Mont., and the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Co. of Canada, Ltd., at Trail, B.C., and more recently by the International Smelting and Refining Co. at Toocle, Utah. : Fuming operations at the East Helena and the Tooele plants are more or less identical. Trail practice differs chiefly in the methods employed for the storage of the hot feed slag and in the methods utilized for the handling and cooling of the fuming furnace gas. The new Bunker Hill fuming plant closely follows Trail procedure in the treatment of the furnace discharge gas while East Hclcna methods have been adopted for the storage of feed slag.

The Tom, East and West zone, stratiform Zn-Pb-Ag deposits at Macmillan Pass, Yukon, Canada were discovered by Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co Ltd prospectors in 1951. Further exploration, including two phases of underground exploration produced an HBM&S calculated reserve of 9.28 Mt of 7.5 per cent Pb, 6.2 per cent Zn and 69.4 g/T Ag for these zones. Cominco Ltd optioned the property in 1988. Deep, surface drilling extended the West and Southeast zones downward 200 - 300 m, indicating an additional potential resource of several million tonnes of good grade. The magnitude of the controlling syndepositional setting suggests that mineralisation continues to greater depth but with increased drilling and possibly mining costs. The 30 x 60 km Macmillan Fold belt trends WNW across the NW Selwyn Basin and Cordilleran trend. Within the fold belt, the Central Block - a complex, rift controlled basin of Devonian siliciclastics, hosts seven zones of Pb-Zn-Ag mineralisation clustered about four hydrothermal centres. The centres, distributed over 24 km, are coincident with small syndepositionally active structural sub-basins. The Tom deposits, in one such sub-basin, are localised by a third order structure consisting of two palaeobathymetric troughs flanking a syndepositional horst. This structure caused drastic facies and thickness changes over 600 metres of strata and focussed the venting of hydrothermal fluids through permeable conglomerates in the horst and its flanking growth faults. Mineral facies are zoned, with Pb-Ag contents rapidly diminishing outward from the vent resulting in restricted areas of high grade Pb-Zn-Ag-Ba ore within more extensive, sub-economic, Ba-Zn mineralisation. Widespread iron carbonate alteration of the footwall and high Si, B and Zn values in the hangingwall 'fingerprint' the deposit and along with the distinct facies variations provide aids to exploring the Tom and like deposits.

The Iron Prince orebody occurs within the Lower Middleback Jaspilite Horizon of the Middleback Group and consists of hematite within host rocks of jaspilites and schists. The ore was probably the product of leaching of silica from jaspilites and replacement by iron, concentrations occurring in suitable structural traps. The narrowness and the presence of extensive dolerite amphibolite dykes within the orebody make it essential to operate a grade control programme in advance of the faces. Information from drilling is drawn up on bench plans, step plans and impurity overlays, and these serve both in day to day production planning and in long term planning. Mining is done selectively by open-pit methods and blending conducted by keeping at least three faces of different grades of ore open at any one time. No stock piles of ore are kept for blending, but contact ore, contaminated ore and enriched material are dumped for later beneficiation.

The problem of determining oxygen levels in liquid steel to aid in deoxidation control has received general attention for a number of years. Work in this direction started at the B.H.P. Central Research Laboratories early in 1967 with an evaluation of sampling techniques followed by vacuum fusion analysis to determine the oxygen content of the samples (1). It was found that these techniques had a number of drawbacks if they were to be used for deoxidation control. The method of analysis was rather too slow to allow effective control and measured total oxygen level rather than dissolved oxygen. Furthermore, the results were found to be very variable due to slag entrainment in the samples. Attention therefore turned to the galvanic cell method using a solid oxygen ion conductive electrolyte such as cubic stabilised zirconia. The ionic conductivity properties of electrolytes such as (ZrO2) 85 (CaO).15 had been studied by a number of investigators and had already been applied to the measurement of oxygen activity in gases, in lower melting metals such as copper, lead, tin, silver, alkali metals and indeed the first studies in steel had been made (2,3). Since then the results of a number of studies in the development of an expendable oxygen probe for steel have been reported (4-9).

At Newmont’s Jundee Operation, exploration and resource geologists collaborated to produce an open pit resource model. Using a variety of modelling and estimation techniques but no new data, an uneconomic underground target was converted into a potentially economic open pit evaluation. During an industry downturn, it is more important than ever to efficiently share expertise, ideas and resources to problem solve and produce meaningful project outcomes. The two departments brought together different methods and ideas, and the process showed that certain methods worked better than others in different situations, thus the appropriate method was applied to each part of the evaluation. The results were used to create new procedures and improved lithology modelling and resource model estimations. Adaptability of the geology departments and collaboration such as this are key to ongoing improvements and future mine life at Jundee.CITATION:Dudgeon, K, Paradis, J and Topping, M, 2014. The presence of moderate to high concentrations of colloidal clays in coal preparation plant waters can cause serious operating and economic problems for a coal company. Among the host of possible problems are the following: 1) Poor separation of clays in the plant thickener, resulting in: a) Increased ash in the clean coal. b) Increased specific gravity of the wash water and decreased coal recoveries at the desired quality. c) Increased thickener operating costs in trying to overcome the problem. 2) Decreased solid concentrations in the thickener underflow and increased pumping requirements to meet solids withdrawal requirements.

UNDER sulfur in coal, is usually understood that form of sulfur which is combined with iron and known as pyrite. It occurs in the form of halls, lenses, nodules, continuous layers, thin sheets, or flakes, both in horizontal planes and vertical cleavage fissures. But pyrites also occur as very fine microscopic particles, or nodules, disseminated through the compact coal. This form has had but very little consideration. Finally, there is sulfur in coal in an amicroscopic form (not visible with an ordinary microscope), probably combined with the organic matter that exists -in tile coal. This form has had considerable attention from a scientific standpoint, but has probably not been recognized enough on the economic side. One or the other, or both, of these two latter forms may comprise the larger part of the sulfur content of coal, especially after it has been washed or otherwise prepared for use.

Activated carbon particles obtained from a number of Australian CIP operations were examined with an optical and a scanning electron micro- scope and an electron microprobe. External surfaces, and polished sec- tions through individual particles, were examined with special reference to materials on the surface and to calcium and gold distributions. Photographs are presented of surface contamination of the particles by salts precipitated from the pulp such as calcium carbonate (calcite), calcium sulphate (gypsum), and a magnesium salt; ore minerals such as quartz, hematite, pyrite, arsenopyrite, pentlandite, and various alumino- silicates; and other substances such as grinding media and a fungus. Calcite was very abundant but the other materials were less common. Contamination in the interior of carbon particles was almost exclu- sively calcium carbonate, and extensive contamination extended to the centre of some particles. A possible mechanism for the formation of cal- cium carbonate inside the carbon particles is noted. Gold X-ray dot maps of sections through carbon particles indicated that gold was distributed throughout coconut shell carbons and that although gold was more concentrated near the outer surfaces of extruded peat carbon particles, it was also present to depths of at least 500 ¦m.
