"The Wangjialing Coal Mine is the main colliery of the China Coal Huajin Energy Limited Liability Company. The average thickness of the coal seam in District 201 is 6.21 m. Fully mechanized longwall mining was used in this district. The ventilation roadway of panel 20102 was influenced by the retreat mining of the adjacent panel 20104. Therefore, large deformation and severe roof falls occurred in this roadway, seriously influencing the safety production of this coal mine. To support the roadway, cable truss was proposed to strengthen the reinforcement of this ventilation roadway. First, numerical simulation was used to optimize the reinforcement parameters, including the cable installation angle, cable length, and eccentric distance. Based on numerical simulation results, in-situ tests were conducted in the ventilation roadway of panel 20102 with the cable truss technology. In-situ monitoring results showed that the roof-to-floor convergence and the convergence of roadway on two sides were within the safety range. Furthermore, no apparent separations occurred in the roof. These indicate that based on the designed parameters, the cable truss system can effectively maintain the roadway stability under the severe influence of the adjacent longwall mining.INTRODUCTIONCable bolts are flexible tendons composed of multi steel wires, which are wound into a strand (Chen, Hagan, and Saydam, 2018). They were initially introduced in the hard rock mining industry in the 1960s. Later, they found rapid application in coal mines to maintain the stability of excavations (Wang et al., 2015).The standard cable bolt is composed of seven steel wires with a diameter of 15.2 mm. Laboratory and in-situ tests showed that there is a low bonding capacity between the standard cable bolt and the grout (Craig and Holden, 2014; Chen, Hagan, and Saydam, 2018). Then, modified cable bolts are developed based on the standard cable bolts. They are improved by changing the surface geometry of standard cable bolts, such as birdcaged cable bolts (Hutchins et al., 1990) or nutcaged cable bolts (Hyett et al., 1993). Further tests proved that modified cable bolts have better mechanical interlock and friction between the cable bolt and grout, leading to larger load transfer capacity of cable bolts.Although cable bolts have been used for many years, failure of the cable bolting system still occurs. A common failure mode is the damage of surrounding confining medium while the cable bolt is still hanging in the roof, which is caused by the bond failure of the cable/grout interface (Hutchinson and Diederichs, 1996). To prevent the cable bolting system from failing, the cable truss system is more widely used in mining engineering."

In the mathematical analysis of electrical networks, the electrical devices are often modeled using idealized network elements such as current sources, voltage sources, and resistors. An analogous approach is outlined here for the modeling of mine ventilation networks, which can be considered nonlinear resistive networks. The modeling technique proposed uses five basic (non-reducible) elements: the H element, the Q element, the D element, the R element, and the N element. These elements are characterized by their (a) pressure gain or loss, (b) air quantity, and (c) pressure-versus-quantity relationship, each of which may be known or unknown. In addition to the definition of the basic elements, the necessary conditions for which there exists a unique solution are discussed. This is performed using theoretical developments derived from electrical circuit theory and illustrated in example networks. The proposed procedures are useful in the solution and characterization of mine ventilation networks.

"Grinding has a marked effect on concentrator recovery and operating cost, and improved operation through automatic control can enhance plant performance. The correct application of automatic control can only be accomplished after the basic process variables and their effect on mill operation have been defined. This paper develops a control system for a closed circuit grinding system. Typical control systems, such as those for feed, water flow, level and circulating load, are discussed. A method of determining controllability, using the calculated reaction curve technique, is outlined. Various successful automatic grinding control applications are discussed and future possibilities are outlined. Although this paper primarily deals with closed wet grinding• circuits, the principles involved can be readily applied to other processes."

This paper presents arguments which show that a velocity seismograph should be used to measure building and ground vibrations produced by blasting . However , portable velocity seismographs suitable for this type of measurement are not commercially available . The paper describes how a velocity seismograph can be assembled from commercially available velocity gages , amplifiers , and recorders . Also , specifications are given which could be used in the design and manufacture of a portable velocity seismograph suitable for measuring vibrations from blasting .

The paper presents fascinating, in our opinion, observations on mechanism and course of processes occurring during bubble collision with hydrophobic and hydrophilic solid surface. Hydrophobicity of particle surface is a necessary condition for the particle attachment to bubble. We have observed that even in the case of such hydrophobic solid surface as Teflon, the bubble attachment didn't occur at first collision. In distilled water the bubble bounced a few times without attachment. Influence of a-terpineol and n¬pentanol on bubble local and terminal velocity and the phenomena occurring during bubble collisions with hydrophobic and hydrophilic solid surfaces was studied. Bubble collisions with the solid surfaces were monitored and recorded using the high-speed (1182 frames per second) camera. It was found that in distilled water the velocity variations of the "approach-bounce" cycles were identical for Teflon and glass. Four distinct "approach-bounce" cycles were detected both at Teflon and glass surfaces. Moreover, the amplitude and frequency of the velocity variations were identical on collisions with the hydrophobic (polished) and hydrophilic surface. There was no immediate three phase contact formation, with the hydrophobic Teflon surface, what we found really astonishing. Roughness of Teflon surface seems to be important parameter, which affects probability of the bubble attachment as a result of a presence of micro-and/or nano-bubbles at the surface. It was detected that the presence of the micro-bubble affected attachment of the colliding bubble even in distilled water. Presence of a small amount of a-terpineol or n-pentanol affects dramatically the bubble velocity, but their role in mechanism of the bubble attachment needs further study.

The authors' company has recently undertaken a development programme aimed at exploring the relationships between the variables of greatest importance in the design of mixer-settlers for metallurgical solvent extraction applications. Such applications vary from relatively small scale plants treating copper mine waters, nickel containing effluents, etc., where the total flowrates may be of the order of a few hundreds of gallons per minute, to very large scale plants treating several thousands of gallons per minute of leach liquors containing copper, uranium or other metals. This paper outlines the physical and mechanical factors which must be taken into account when designing mixer-settler systems for large scam. solvent extraction plants. The performance of the equipment will also be dependent upon the chemistry of the system, including the kinetics and thermodynamics of the ion exchange reaction itself, the effect of impurities flocculants, surfactants, temperature, etc., but these will not be dealt with here. Much of the laboratory work has been carried out using copper containing solutions and either LIX 64* or LIX 64N* as the solvent dissolved in various grades of kerosene. For simplicity, all the graphs and tables of results which are presented and discussed here will refer to the LIX-copper system, although the conclusions will in many cases be generally applicable to other systems also. The LIX-copper process is now sufficiently well known to obviate the need for a full description, however, an outline flowsheet of the process is shown in Figure 1. The ultimate objective of a laboratory programme for a particular extraction application is to provide data upon which a mixer-settler system can be designed to handle a given throughput of leach liquor and extract from this liquor the maximum quantity of metal for the minimum cost. A practical an interactive model to describe the operation of a flotation bank of mechanical cells was developed based on the hydrodynamic and metallurgical characterization of large industrial flotation cells. Thus, the mineral grade and recovery, as well as the stream properties along the flotation bank can be described in terms of the operating variables. The model was built considering the flotation bank as a distributed system, so the solution for the water and solids mass balances, per size classes, for each single cell, are sequentially solved. Also, each cell was described by two distinct zones, the collection zone characterized by the flotation rate constant and the froth zone characterized by the froth recovery. The mineral feed was described in terms of the mineral species and particle size classes, using a rectangular flotation rate constant distribution. Also, the effect of changing the actual operating variables (air flowrate, pulp level, pulp density, pulp flowrate, etc.) on the mineral collection process, in the collection (pulp) zone, was considered downstream along the bank. The froth recovery of floatable mineral has been estimated by measuring the mass flowrate of particles entering the froth by true flotation together with the concentrate mass flowrate (ton/h). The mass flowrate of collected particles at the pulp/froth interface level was calculated from direct measurement of bubble load (ton/m3) and gas flowrate (m3/h). Flotation recovery is mainly related to the froth depth and air flowrate. All parameters considered in the model have been adjusted from direct measurements in plant site. Also, the effects of other operating variables such as reagents dosage, top of froth grade, or froth discharge velocity are presently under study. This procedure has been tested using data from industrial rougher operations consisting of flotation banks with 5 cells to 9 cells in series, and different cell sizes, such as 45m3, 130m3, 160m3 and 250m3. Thus, it has been shown that the model approach is a powerful tool for flotation cells diagnosis, operation and development of new control strategies, as well as, to evaluate the effect that de-sign and operating variables have upon the collection and froth zones performance in large flotation cells.

With copper at its host depressed price in several years, producers are looking at every opportunity to cut costs in order to continue operating. Some of the measures that have been applied by different companies include reduction in manpower, high grading, and in some cases partial shutdowns. The most beneficial cost cutting measure implemented by Southern Peru Copper Corporation was to steepen the slope of the final pit limit from a conservative 37 degrees to an average of 48 degrees. By doing so, substantial cash outlays were saved. Southern Peru Copper Corporation (SPCC) operates two open pit copper mines and concentrators in the southern part of Peru, about 150 kilometers from the Chilean bordar. The Toquepala Mine went into production in 1960 and the Cuajone Mine in 1976. Both mines use shovel, truck and train operations. The trains, which haul ore to the crusher or waste to the dumps, are loaded either directly by shovels or by a transfer system. The Toquepala Concentrator treats an average of 43,000 tons per day and the Cuajone Concentrator an average of 55,000 tons per day. Concentrates are shipped via a 200 kilometer railroad to the port city of Ilo where the SPCC smelter is located. The annual production in the smelter from both mines is 290,000 tons of blister copper.

Ausmelt Technology was selected by Bindura Nickel Corporation (BNC) as the basis for a new copper circuit to process nickel plant copper leach residue to blister, anode and finally cathode copper and recover PGM values at the Bindura Smelter Refinery (BSR). The process selected, based on Ausmelt Technology to smelt and convert the residue to matte and blister copper and produce a discard slag, is novel incorporating smelting, converting and slag reduction process steps in a single Ausmelt vessel. The process demands a high quality blister copper product with low levels of arsenic and nickel. This paper reviews the project and the initial operational results to the end of 1997 of the Ausmelt Top Submerged Lancing (TSL) smelter and discusses the implications for the wider TSL converter market.

"A Stack Melter has been installed and is currently operating at Lexington Die Casting. The Stack Melter consists of a 1 meter (3 foot) diameter refractory tube, 2 meters (7 feet) high. Specification ingots are continuously fed to the top of the melter and piled to nearly the top. A burner fires through the scrap which melts the lower portion and preheats the upper portion. As the lower portion is melted, it is drawn out and the upper preheated scrap falls to a lower level where it in tum melts. The molten metal is fed to one of two holding furnaces for eventual delivery to a casting machine.The Stack Melter's energy use is approximately 2900 joules/g (1,250 Btu/lbm), resulting in an overall energy savings of about 58%. This energy savings is brought about primarily because the flue gases preheat the scrap and the flue gas temperature is dropped to well under 528°C (1000°F)."

On May 14, 2011 a chimney blast took place in Vienna, Austria. The blasting operation was part of the demolition works at a former railway fabrication. The demolition works on this ground were done under the leadership of the Austrian construction and demolition company PORR. In agreement with the civil organizations which were involved, the commander of the Regional Military Command of Vienna, Brigadier general Dr. Karl SCHMIDSEDER ordered a reserve force engineer company to demolish the chimney. The concrete planning of the chimney blasting was done by specialist Markus SEWALD who belongs to the HEERESTRUPPENSCHULE (combined armed force school) of the Austrian armed forces.

"Raman spectroscopy is used to quantify the extent of disorder in the carbonaceous matter associated with preg-robbing ores. Previous studies of Goldstrike ores showed that the height and width of the peaks for the “D” (disordered) and “G” (graphite) bands, the so-called “Raman ratio” had a strong correlation to the preg-robbing value (PRV) measured for various ore samples. A brief literature review on Raman spectroscopy as it applies to preg-robbing ores is presented. Further, recent studies, presented here, have shown no correlation between the Raman ratio and the PRV for a wide variety of ores. This suggests that the extent of organic carbon crystal disorder is not the main factor in determining preg-robbing characteristics.INTRODUCTION Preg-robbing may arise from natural carbonaceous materials in the ore. Several mechanisms have been proposed in the past decades including a physical sorption process by the carbonaceous matter, or via the reduction of aurocyanide at the mineral surface (Abotsi & Osseoasare, 1986; Afenya, Osseoasare, & Abotsi, 1983; Tan, Feng, Lukey, & Van Deventer, 2005). Nevertheless, the mechanisms of preg-robbing remain poorly understood. Understanding the nature of the preg-robber is of practical importance for the selection of a suitable treatment process. Fine carbon particles in the ore have been recognized as preg-robbers due to their similarity to the activated carbon used in the carbon in leach (CIL) or carbon in pulp (CIP) processes. Previous research has illustrated that the activated carbon (also referred to as amorphous carbon in some literature) has a much higher absorption ability than pure graphite with high crystallinity (Adams & Burger, 1998). Adams et al (Adams, Swaney, Friedl & Wagner 1996) concluded that carbonaceous matter is largely responsible for the overall preg-robbing capacity of a given ore. However, the mechanism of carbon preg-robbing was still not clear mostly due to the complexity of amorphous carbon and its behavior in different solution matrices, and at different pH and temperature (Adams, 1990, 1993)."

Field-based research was conducted to investigate the performance of field portable X-ray fluorescence (FPXRF) in the analysis of reverse circulation (RC) drill chips in iron ore exploration. For years, FPXRF has been considered unsuitable for iron ore exploration due to the limitations of the elements it is capable of analysing for, in particular its inability to measure light elements (Mg, Al, Si, P, S). With the advent of the use of silicon drift detectors (SDD) in FPXRF, light elements are now measurable elements. However, doubt over the appropriate use of this new technology still exists due to the absence of reliable comparative field data. These doubts concerned the ability of the FPXRF data to correlate strongly with the laboratory assay of the same samples. It was believed that inconsistent grain size and other variables not being controlled would contribute greatly to this perceived unreliability.We tested RC chip samples on-site in the Pilbara, with the portable Thermo Scientific Niton XL3t X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyser for a range of elements including Fe, Mn, Al, Si and S and then compared the results with laboratory assay data. A strong correlation indicates that the FPXRF results are reliable. Furthermore, to show the effect of simple sample preparation, we also analysed pulps of the same samples in the same way.The correlations were good for all of the elements of interest for the RC chip samples (R2 values between 0.82 and 0.9), and excellent for the pulps (R2 values between 0.89 and 1). The results also showed a direct correlation between sample preparation and improved quality of results with the FPXRF. This indicates that FPXRF can produce data from unprepared RC chips for Al and Si that, when compared with laboratory assays, is reliable for a field application in drilling and grade control.
