Deposits of ferromanganese crust containing cobalt and nickel occur on the seafloor in the Pacific Ocean near the Hawaiian Islands and Johnston Atoll. This paper describes developmental flotation metallurgy to separate crust from its associated substrate gangue. Important variables in ferromanganese crust flotation include reagent type, aeration rate, conditioning time and agitation intensity, pH, temperature, water type, and feed size distribution. Flotation in seawater of minus 600 ~m (-28 mesh) material assaying 6.2% Mn, 0.2% Co, and 0.13% Ni with diesel fuel-crude tall oil-sulfonate collectors produces concentrates assaying 15% Mn, 0.6% Co, and 0.3% Ni with recoveries of 89-95% while removing 62% of the feed weight.

"To minimise mine shaft maintenance over the long-term, some potash mine shaft sinking projects have required the provision of a continuous fully welded waterproof steel liner over a substantial depth to achieve zero water ingress. This brings many challenges, including the implementation of a bottom-up construction sequence incorporating extensive waterproof welding and how to ensure the integrity of the welded liner when subject to substantial temperature fluctuations that are likely to occur with a composite steel-concrete liner placed within an artificially frozen shaft excavation. This paper highlights the key challenges and discusses multiple mitigation measures including vertical shaft movement joints and a combined structural-thermal analysis approach. INTRODUCTION Whilst the application of combined steel and concrete shaft liners using a fully welded steel liner is not new and has been used in several previous projects, most notably at Lanigan (Storck, 1968 & Roesner, 1980), recently the need to provide a continuously welded steel waterproof liner for over 800 m length of shaft for a potash mine has been considered. The need for a fully continuous welded steel liner arises from the perceived benefits of providing a fully dry shaft environment to; increase the life expectancy of the shaft; reduce routine maintenance particularly combatting salt accretion and minimising wash down practices; and improve long-term ground stability by preventing salt dissolution. Whereas previous projects have employed discontinuous sections of steel liner, when a fully continuous liner is employed longitudinal shaft strains from thermal changes result in significant deformations that must be either explicitly accommodated or resisted. Note, these thermal vertical expansion forces are more than capable of lifting the shaft collar and head frame structures should they be fixed in place. Typically, shafts are designed to resist vertical forces (collar loads and self-weight) by creating mechanical interlock with the adjacent ground. In competent rock this occurs incrementally with the construction of the shaft liner, and occasional hitch/crib structures are constructed as intermediate foundations to guarantee the transfer of vertical forces at distinct horizons. Usually this means cribs are constructed at first rock head, above the station level, and at the sump, although sometimes additional cribs are formed when entering and exiting weak strata or when a change in shaft liner construction is required."

Stobie Mine, decades old, is the first of its mines to change from labour-intensive to automationassisted techniques. The communications system installed at the mine and the ability to remotely control underground equipment from surface is reviewed (Poole et al., 1996, 1997). It discusses some of the experiences and processes required to further the concept to consolidate the operation of multiple machines under a single operator. It considers the communications systems requirements and their focuses, particularly on the development of systems for the tele-operation of LHDs and drilling machines from surface."

During World War II, when the curtailment of imports led to an unprecedented demand for domestically produced mica, beryl, and other pegmatitic minerals, the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey entered upon a program designed to expedite the production of these minerals from the Black Hills area of South Dakota. The program involved mapping, sampling and drilling many pegmatite dikes found in the southern portion of the area and beneficiation tests in the field and in the Bureau of Mines laboratories at Rapid. City, S. Dak., Rolla, Mo., Salt Lake City, Utah, and College Park, Md. This paper describes the mode of occurrence and the sampling and beneficiation tests on one dike, the Helen Beryl pegmatite, which was investigated as part of the general pegmatite study in South Dakota. Investigation of the Helen Beryl Pegmatite by the Bureau began in August 1943 and was terminated in April 1944. During this period the Bureau took a series of bulk samples from pits for beneficiation tests, drove an adit through the center of the dike to obtain feed for a bulk-sampling plant operation, and finally drilled a series of long holes to sample the deposit further. Geologists of the Federal Geological Survey mapped the deposit and the faces of all excavations and logged drill holes from sludge samples recovered from long-hole drilling.

The algorithms employed by the commercial tools are either heuristic algorithm or iterative optimisation of a subsystem. This often results in a suboptimal schedule. In this paper, the author presents a new scheduling algorithm that incorporates with a novel stockpile configuration system, an improved algorithm on multiple processes and a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) global optimisation model. It can simultaneously optimise stockpiles, blending, multiple processes as well as multiple mines. In addition, it allows the user to interact with the solution to adjust the solution to be practical and desirable.CITATION:Ren, Y, 2013. A nuclear meter based on measurement of prompt capture gamma rays is being developed for monitoring the sulfur content of coal streams. Equipment has been built to measure sulfur rapidly, and methods have been devised to compensate for changes in moisture, ash, and bulk density of coal flowing through a bin. Pilot plant tests of the system with various additives to different coals show a precision and accuracy of 0.02 percent sulfur and 0.04 percent sulfur, respectively. Based on these results, a hardwired meter has been fabricated for testing in a commercial coal preparation plant.

Introduction The greatest single advance in rock drilling practice since the advent of percussion drills was the introduction of tungsten carbide tipped rock drill?bits. The evolution of rock drills has been a long and highly diversified effort which has culminated in the highly refined ?drilling machines we know today, but because of the spectacular possibilities shown by ?detachable bits, and especially those with tungsten carbide inserts, there is little doubt that the cutting face of .the drilling unit has in recent days stolen the spotlight of rock drilling research and commanded the major attention of the rock drilling fraternity. "Solid" Steels Until about twenty years ago, all rock was drilled with a one-piece rod with a bit forged on one end. In the early years of the art of rock drilling, there was tried every conceivable pattern of :bit from the single-edge chisel to elaborate geometric 'designs. In the end, it was found that a 4-point bit with two sharpened cutting edges crossing each other at right angles would serve best for most rock drilling requirements. For some years thereafter, the main concern of drill manufacturers was .to obtain the best possible steel for drill rods. This was not accomplished as easily as might be thought. The cutting end had to be such that it could be hardened sufficiently to do its work without premature dulling and yet not so brittle as to shatter under the multiple impacts.

A new technology of bacterial leaching by means of the Thiobacillus ferrooxidance bacteria is proposed. The equations of reactions that describe of the first and the second stage of bacterial leaching of sulfide raw materials containing non-ferrous metals are given. The theory is analyzed and the technology of processing of some complicated substandard concentrate containing copper and zinc is proposed. The main technological operations including a two-stage bacterial leaching and stages of copper and zinc recovery in the form of marketable product are described. The results of the experimental validation of the main technological parameters of the first stage are given. The main possibilities of a more complete zinc and copper recovery at the second stage of bacterial leaching are discussed in comparison with single-stage leaching process.

"Abstract - The Mount Fronsac North volcanogenic massive sulfide deposit is the most recently discovered massive sulfide body in the Bathurst Mining Camp. The deposit occurs within a sequence of intercalated fine-grained felsic tuff and sedimentary rocks (Little Falls member), at the top of the Nepisiguit Falls Formation. Aphyric to sparsely feldspar-phyric rhyolite and related volcanic rocks of the Flat Landing Brook Formation overlie the host sequence. The massive and semimassive parts of the deposit have a north-south strike length of 525 m and a dip of ~45°E; the deposit is continuous downdip for 600 m, and thickness varies from 2 to 20 m. The deposit contains an estimated geologic resource of 14 Mt of low-grade, semimassive (>60%) to locally massive sulfides, and includes a high-grade zone of 1.26 Mt grading 7.65% Zn, 2.18% Pb, 0.14% Cu, 40.3 g/t Ag, and 0.40 g/t Au. The semimassive to massive sulfide intersections occur in an envelope of quartz-sericite±chlorite schist, which is interpreted to be intensely deformed felsic tuff. This sequence has a maximum thickness of 140 m and contains significant (up to 50%) fine- to coarse-grained disseminated pyrite. The pyritic envelope has a strike length of 900 m and extends over 1000 m downdip. Massive sulfides are found throughout this alteration envelope, but more commonly occur at or near the upper contact. The significance of the discovery of this deposit is that it represents a near surface discovery of a large tonnage sulfide body in a mature mining camp, one in which the possibility of discovery of a new shallow deposit had been all but discounted. This opens the possibility for future discoveries in this part of the Bathurst Mining Camp. Le gisement est situé dans une séquence de tufs felsiques à grains fins interlités de roches sédimentaires (membre de Little Falls, au sommet de la Formation de Nepisiguit Falls. La partie massive et la semimassive s’étendent du nord au sud sur 525 m et ont un pendage de ~45°E; le gisement est continu sur 600 m en angle de chute et son épaisseur varie de 2 à 20 m. Le gisement contient une ressource géologique évaluée à 14 Mt de sulfures semimassifs (>60%) localement massifs à basse teneur, incluant une zone à haute teneur de 1.26 Mt titrant 7.65% Zn, 2.18% Pb, 0.14% Cu, 40.3 g/t Ag, et 0.40 g/t Au. Des sulfures massifs sont trouvés partout à l’intérieur de cette enveloppe d’altération, mais ils sont plus fréquents près du contact supérieur. L’importance de cette découverte tient à ce qu’elle est un exemple d’un gisement à fort tonnage nouvellement découvert à une faible profondeur dans un camp minier mature, i.e., un camp ou l’on ne croyait plus qu’il était possible de trouver un gisement près de la surface. Ceci ouvre la porte à la possibilité d’autres découvertes dans cette partie du Camp Minier de Bathurst."

Desde o final da década de 90, com o desenvolvimento de novos parâmetros industriais para a fabricação de produtos eletroeletrônicos criou-se o conceito de obsolescência programada. Como consequência deste comportamento mercadológico e novos parâmetros de consumo, o volume de resíduos de equipamentos eletroeletrônicos gerado pelo descarte indiscriminado de produtos ainda em condições de uso tem atingido patamares alarmantes, tornando-se assim um grave problema ambiental. Com a Política Nacional de Resíduos Sólidos, estudos sobre a logística reversa dos resíduos provenientes de equipamentos eletroeletrônicos revelam-se promissores devido à presença de metais com alto valor de mercado, o que viabiliza economicamente os processos de reciclagem destes resíduos. Quando se trata da recuperação de metais e de reagentes, as rotas envolvendo etapas hidrometalúrgicas oferecem um grande benefício em relação às soluções existentes devido à não liberação de gases tóxicos durante o processo. No entanto, para a recuperação de cobre e alguns metais nobres as rotas hidrometalúrgicas tradicionais têm-se mostrado ineficientes devido à presença de ferro nos resíduos. Por esta razão, este trabalho tem como objetivo realizar estudo cinético da lixiviação de ferro de forma seletiva para a recuperação de outros metais. Foi analisado o processo de lixiviação em ácido sulfúrico na concentração de 2M, variando tempo e temperatura, com o intuito de avaliar a extração seletiva do ferro e viabilizando assim os processos subsequentes de recuperação de cobre e metais nobres através de extração sólido-líquido ou líquido-líquido. Os resultados apontam para extrações de ferro em solução de ácido com índices de pureza acima de 95%.

"Moorhouse is founded on what at the time of construction were the deepest base grouted piles ever installed in London, specifically designed to accommodate settlement from the proposed development of Crossrail. This paper describes design and construction issues associated with this project with special emphasis on the construction aspects of installing these piles in a heavily congested site in Central London.INTRODUCTIONConstruction of the deepest base grouted bored piles in a congested site in Central London in 2002 posed a number of design and construction problems. To add to the complication, the new structure's footprint is within the safeguarded zone of the proposed new cross London rail link, Crossrail. Therefore the piles were required to be designed to allow for the effects of construction of the proposed Crossrail's tunnels and a new station at Moorgate. The design and construction issues associated with this project are described in this paper and methods used to address such issues are presented.MOORHOUSE DEVELOPMENTThe new nineteen storey high Moorhouse building was commissioned by Moor House Limited Partnership and will form another new Central London landmark building by the British architect Foster and Partners. Two of the four facades feature complex geometry to fulfill the city's planning requirements. The building is a steel frame structure stabilised by a reinforced concrete core. Floor plates span between the core and the perimeter with two rows of internal columns.The complex geometry of the superstructure requires a diagonal ""bandolier"" to transfer floor loads to certain perimeter columns. Another salient feature of the superstructure is the ribs that are provided to act as sloping columns to carry the loads down to the foundations."

Laboratory experiments were conducted to determine the responses of a prototype smoke detector and a commercially available photoelectric smoke detector to smoke particles generated from various combustion sources. The prototype smoke detector combines optical scattering measurements with ionization chamber measurements in order to reduce/eliminate nuisance alarms due to the presence of airborne dusts or diesel exhaust particles. The commercially available smoke detector is designed for use in harsh environments where airborne dust represents a major problem due to both nuisance alarms and detector contamination. In the experiments, the responses of the two detectors were measured when exposed to smoke particles from the exhaust of a diesel engine and from a variety of fire sources, including wood, coal, styrene butadiene rubber, and No. 2 diesel fuel. For the solid fuels, data were obtained for both smoldering and flaming combustions. This report describes the experiments, their results, and the use of these results as they apply to early-warning fire sensors capable of the rapid and reliable detection of fires in atmospheres that may or may not be contaminated by either airborne dust or the products produced from diesel engines.

The new 30 MVA slag cleaning furnace at Waterval Smelter, Rustenburg Platinum, South Africa, has been in operation since 10 March 2003. The furnace design and operation face a number of challenges including a wide variety of feed materials and resulting bath conditions. Furnace feed varies in combinations of granulated Waterval Ausmelt Converter Slag (WACS), hot fed Peirce-Smith converter slag, concentrate and reverts. Coke is added as reductant. The resulting slag composition varies considerably and regularly. For the case feeding WACS an almost pure fayalitic slag (60%+ FeO, 30%+ SiO2) with a very low viscosity results. Due to the widely varying slag conditions, including a superheated fayalitic slag with high fluidity, a robust sidewall design is required adjacent to the slag bath. For this reason the furnace sidewall is equipped with Pyromet's MAXICOOL® high intensity copper cooling system. The design and installation of the copper coolers as well as tap holes are discussed. To cope with the variation in bath conditions and high slag superheat (350°C when tapped at 1650°C), the copper coolers are capable of removing peak sidewall heat fluxes above 500 kW/m2. Feedback is included on the performance of the Pyromet MAXICOO® copper cooling system for the first two years of operation. The paper further includes an overview on the design and performance of the tap holes, furnace shell, furnace roof and copper slag spouts.

The paper describes the development of components in an lntegrated Furnace Control system for shielded-arc smelting focusing on operation and crucible integrity enhancement. The paper reviews the mechanisms of power, feed and energy input and losses into the shielded-arc smelting process and describes the furnace control system module development and integration to tailor the process. The ultimate success of a furnace control system application is transfer of knowledge, training, and operational support during furnace start-up and ramp-up phases and a model for how this has been achieved is discussed. The control modules of a shielded-arc laterite smelting furnace are described in detail including measured results and screen captures from application in a laterite smelting furnace. This paper focuses on developments in Integrated Furnace Controls tailored to shielded-arc laterite smelting but development of common furnace control modules for improved crucible and tapping operation integrity applied to other furnace processes, including immersed-arc smelting, is also covered. "THE GOLD MINING REGION of Timmins - Val d'Or, astride the Ontario-Quebec border, has long suffered the effects of rising costs during the period when the U.S. price of gold was fixed at $35 per ounce. The federal government, through such assistance programs as that set up under the Emergency Gold Mining Assistance Act (E.G.M.A. ) in 1948, has subsidized the gold mining communities of Canada for a total of over $300 million to March 31, 1972. Of this, the Timmins - Val d'Or ""gold belt"" has received more than twothirds, almost $220 million. In spite of these continuous subsidies, only 12 gold mines are still producing in the Timmins - Val d'Or belt, whereas 71 mines have received subsidies for some period since 1948. The vital question is how the communities previously supported principally by the mining of gold will survive in the long run, as many of the older mines either are already depleted or are quickly becoming so. With the rising price of gold on the 'free market in recent months, prospects look a little brighter for the time being. Even with the increased official price of U.S. $38, which made the maximum government subsidized price about $48 per ounce, gold mines have not sold any gold to the government since January 1972 and some stopped doing so months before that. The populace of the region has not been enthusiastic about relocation nor about extensive retraining programs in the past and probably will not be in the future. So, when the remaining gold mines become depleted, the old problems of community depression will remain."

The development of a design-and-construct tunnelling project in Australia from its concept to its construction requires designs to be prepared and reviewed at several distinct stages prior to documenting ‘for construction’. On recent projects the post-tender stages have been variously called 30 per cent—70 per cent—100 per cent; or concept–substantial–final; or system definition–preliminary–critical. The design is reviewed at each stage by the designer’s internal reviewer, the contractor and its independent advisor(s), the owner and its independent advisor(s), the project’s independent certifier, proof engineers and often third-party stakeholders and their advisors. Documentation for each stage often dominates the design effort, at times distracting from design. This paper presents the authors’ experience of this design-and-review process. Comparisons of design budget and actual design spend and design program implications are presented. It is postulated that a subtle change has occurred in our industry that has diminished the value of the design dollar. Is there a better process? During the 1980 decade, the rapid price increase for flake graphite has generated a high degree of interest for the discovery and the development of alternate occidental sources of supply in response to fluctuations in quality and availability from current producers. Alike many industrial minerals, graphite draws its complexity not only from its mineralogy and unique properties but also from the very large spectrum of industrial applications each calling for specific quality criterion. As new high technology uses are being developed, more rigid specifications will apply. Discovered during the latter part of 1988 by Mazarin inc., some 30 Km South of Fermont near the Quebec-Labrador border, the Lac Knife deposit was quickly identified as one of the world major long term alternate source of stable supply for this mineral. This paper also reviews the status of the project development as of late 1991, while updating previous papers published by Industrial Minerals1990 and Mining Magazine 1990.
