The Mont Klahoyo magnetite deposit is located about 600 km northwest of Abidjan, Ivory Coast. During an exploration period ending in 1977 an international joint venture group investigated the deposit and proved reserves of 670 million tons grading 36% iron. The deposit, occurring at the northeast end of the Baoubly-Kiriao chain of Precambrian iron formations, is associated with amphibolites, pyroxenites and gneisses of the Liberian Shield. At Mont Klahoyo occur two separate iron formations of which the lower member is the ore body. This lower member consists of a highly metamorphosed - banded quartz-magnetite iron formation in which iron silicate bands alternate with beds of quartz-magnetite. mphibolite-pyroxenites and sillimanite-cordierite-garnet gneisses form hanging and footwall rocks. The iron formation has been folded into an elongated overturned "Z" shaped major drag fold with axes trending and plunging approximately northeast. Beds are vertical or dip steeply to the southeast. The ore zone has an average thickness of 130 m and outcrops intermittently over a distance of approximately 5.5 km. Based upon detailed studies of drill cores and the results of ore dressing test work, eight stratigraphic units, identified as K-1 to K-8, are recognizable in the iron formation. Four interbedded units are low grade silicate zones (silicate facies) with the remaining quartz-magnetite units (oxide facies) repre¬senting the important ore zones of the Mont Klahoyo deposit. The ore-bearing "K" units are subdivided further, based upon their specific lithologies, iron content and concentration characteristics, into eleven ore types. The identification of these ore types is considered particularly important to mine planning and flowsheet design. A cap of oxidized materials overlies the primary quartz-magnetite iron formation but no enrichment has occurred. It is proposed that the Mont Kalhoyo iron formations were deposited, possibly chemically, in a volcanic environment as a siliceous iron formation with volcanism providing the primary source of iron and silica. Metamorphism converted the siliceous iron formation to a relatively coarse-grained quartz-magnetite-silicate iron formation.

Reclamation costs were estimated for 20 coal surface mining operations in the Appalachian and Midwestern Coal Supply Districts (these two districts were divided into three multi-State regions). The cost data were obtained through onsite observations, interviews with mining company personnel, and the authors' cost estimating procedures. The cost data are presented in terms of dollars per acre, dollars per ton of coal produced, and dollars per cubic yard of overburden moved during backfilling. The reclamation process is divided-into three cost categories: Premining planning, backfilling, and revegetation. The average total reclamation costs for the three regions are $2.77 per ton of coal produced and $8,168 per acre. As the result of comparisons of reclamation costs by region, by mining method, by slope, and by size of operation, the most important reclamation cost difference is between area mining methods ($1.73 per ton) and contour mining methods ($3.81 per ton). The Federal Bureau of Mines conducted this study to determine as accurately as possible the actual costs involved with the reclamation of coal surface mined land done in conjunction with active mining operations.

Haymont (2012) notes that in parts of Australia significant areas of mining disturbance cannot be relinquished. In Queensland it has been estimated that by 2010, just 0.3 per cent 507 ha of mining disturbance had been rehabilitated to the regulator’s satisfaction (Short, 2015).One reason for this poor record is the presence of inappropriate, unachievable or unmeasurable rehabilitation targets (Glenn et al, 2014; Butler, Anderson and Sexton, 2015). In the authors’ experience in Queensland many mature operations have licence conditions that hinder the achievement of sustainable outcomes or prevent successful validation of rehabilitation success. This creates a lack of certainty for industry and a lack of confidence in the community that the sector can deliver good rehabilitation outcomes (Short, 2015).This extended abstract presents a framework approach that has been applied at two contrasting operations. Without the changes presented, the goal of progressive rehabilitation certification, reduction in financial assurance (FA) and a path to surrender at these sites would have been impossible. The development and optimisation of mill discharge trommels, and specifically their screen panels, can be a neglected area in the complex operation of a minerals processing plant. Trommels are often seen as a ‘set and forget’ component of the circuit, even when significant improvements in design are possible. A redesigned trommel and panel arrangement has simplified and added flexibility to the plant shutdown schedule at Kirkland Lake Gold’s Fosterville Gold Mine in Central Victoria.Prior to the trommel redesign, the shutdown frequency was determined by the expected life of trommel panels at 14 weeks. Planning downtime around this item led to higher maintenance costs and wastage in other areas of the plant. This was particularly disruptive with respect to mill lining change-outs, which were forced out of sequence and often changed prematurely. Fosterville Gold engaged Metso Australia Limited to propose a new trommel design that would better suit the site. The new trommel was engineered to balance simplicity with performance, and incorporated the latest in Modular trommel design, modelling and Finite Elemental Analysis (FEA). Modular Panels and Spiral Segments achieve significantly longer life, and allow in-situ panel change outs, flexibility in spiral and dam positioning and an improvement in classification performance. Trommel panel life has significantly increased from 14 to 71 weeks in the trommel’s highest wearing zone. The new design has eliminated some risks to safety by reducing manual labour and lifting requirements during shutdowns. There is greater flexibility with respect to shutdown requirements. The site is no longer at the mercy of trommel panel lifespan, which allows for better optimisation of wear components in the circuit. CITATION:Pyke, J D, Katov, K and Ciutina, S T, 2018. "As real estate for new development in urban settings becomes scarce, commercial high rises are being constructed above open passenger rail tracks and vehicular roadways. Rail and roadway overbuilds are treated as tunnels requiring emergency ventilation systems for train or automobile and truck fires. The value of floor space in residential and office towers poses challenges to engineers responsible for designing fan rooms and shafts for tunnel ventilation systems within the towers. This paper describes a case study of the unique incorporation of tunnel ventilation fan plants in the overbuild structure of a passenger railyard and an adjacent roadway.INTRODUCTIONTunnel ventilation systems are required for passenger rail and transit (subway) tunnels by the NFPA 130 Standard for Fixed Guideway Transit and Passenger Rail Systems, and the NFPA 502 Standard for Road Tunnels, Bridges, and Other Limited Access Highways requires tunnel ventilation systems for vehicular (road) tunnels. Passenger rail and transit (subway) tunnels are typically ventilated with a series of shafts placed longitudinally along the tunnels to provide piston relief for normal train operations and emergency ventilation of train fires utilizing reversible axial flow fans. The shafts are incorporated in dedicated ventilation buildings that house the tunnel ventilation fans and starters, switchgear to power the fans and other equipment and systems in the building, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) to control fan operation with Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) software, and HVAC fans and ductwork to ventilate the spaces in the building. These ventilation buildings may also provide access to the tunnels below with ingress/egress stairs for use by first responders and firefighters entering the tunnels and train or transit system passengers exiting the tunnels in an emergency. To those concerned in attaining greater safety to life and incidentally to property in coal mining, the meeting of representatives of the national mine safety research organiza¬ tions of the principal coal-producing countries, which was called by the Safety in Mines Research Board of Great Britain at its experimental station near Buxton, should have deep significance. It is notable, first, because it meant the friendly cooperation of countries not many years ago engaged on either side in the great World War; and second, because of the remarkable degree of agreement in the essential fundamental factors and methods of attaining greater safety in coal mines when it is considered that the questions were approached by different paths and that the applications dealt with widely differing natural conditions and national points of view. Varying views, of course, were held as to the relative importance of certain factors, but the differences were of detail rather than of principle. When the meeting adjourned it was unanimously agreed that such meetings should be continued annually and that the greatest benefit was to be derived by close cooperation in the exchange of data. Belgium, France, Germany, Great Britain, and the United States were represented by one or several members of the respective national research organization. It is of interest to note that this research work in Belgium, France, and Germany is supported directly by na¬ tional organizations of mine operators or owners but placed under a scientist appointed by the respective Government, thus giving the work official standing. In Great Britain the work is carried on by a Government board, consisting of persons connected with the coal¬ mining industry or in mining research, appointed by the Secretary for Mines, to direct the work of research of the Mines Department. It does not, however, come under its inspection service. Its work is supported by a penny-a-ton tax on output of coal. In the United States the mine-safety research work is directly supported by the Federal Government.

Microstructure of CaO-SiO2-based glassy samples with various Al2O3 contents were examined quantitatively by Raman spectroscopy and 27Al MAS NMR (magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance). Sequence of multiple cluster models of aluminosilicate system modified with Ca2+ and Na+ cations have been designed, and Raman spectra simulation were carried out after geometric optimisation by quantum chemistry (QC) ab initio calculation. The functional relationship between Raman scattering cross-section (RSCS) and stress index of silicon-oxygen tetrahedron (SIT) for aluminosilicates was established, which was applied to the calibration of experimental Raman spectra. Some five-fold coordinated aluminium (AlV, around 5 per cent) and less than 2 per cent sixfold coordinated aluminium (AlVI) were detected by 27Al MAS NMR, while most of aluminium remained in tetrahedral sites (AlIV). The hyperfine quantitative results of Raman spectroscopy and NMR showed a gradually production of AlIV with addition of Al2O3, along with the significant adjustment of Qi species distribution, in which Q1, Q2 reduced and fully polymerised Q4 increased while Q3 showed a non-monotonic variation and obtained the maximum at Al2O3 = 18 mol per cent. Furthermore, the effects of aluminium to bridging oxygen bond types (T-Ob, T = Si, Al) and the degree of polymerisation were also discussed in detail. The evolution of microstructure and its correlation with the viscosity of CaO-SiO2 based melts, incorporating various Al2O3 additives, have been investigated by employing in situ high temperature Raman spectroscopy at 1823 K and viscosity model. These structural features related to composition are essential theoretic foundation to understand their properties. The average Qi evolution culminates in an overall enhancement of the degree of polymerisation. Viscosity was determined utilising a rigorously selected viscosity model, elucidating a consistent upward trajectory as Al2O3 content is incrementally added. Furthermore, a quantitative analysis of the relationship between viscosity and structure was conducted based on the average number of non-bridging oxygen per network-forming tetrahedron (NBO/T). It provides valuable insights for examining and predicting viscosity behaviour of aluminosilicate systems.

This paper is one of many reporting various aspects of the Bureau of Mines program initiated in August 1939 by passage of the Strategic Minerals Act J the scope of which was greatly expanded by subsequent legislation. In its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. The occurrence of chromite in the Knik Valley near Palmer, Alaska, was brought to the attention of the Bureau of Mines in September 1941 by George Johnson, of Anchorage. At that time a preliminary investigation was made by Robert S. Sanford, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines. The area was investigated on June 4 and 5, 1943, by Henry R. Joesting and Leo H. Saarela, engineers of the Territorial Department of Mines. In August 1942, a second chromite occurrence, the Highway deposit, in the Knik Valley, was reported to the Territorial Department of Mines by John E. Ryan of Anchorage.

"A world famous Wintersport resort in the Alpine planned to build a parking garage for more than 600 cars and busses situated between a torrent, a district road and the village.A nearly 200 m long building giving place for 6 parking levels and a maintenance level for busses and trucks is situated alongside a hill causing excavation height between 20 and 25 meters, which had to be secured. Due to restrictions – neighbours did not allow the client to drill anchors for retention – we designed a solution combining micropiles, strand anchors, shotcrete and nails as permanent earth retention not exceeding the space of 7 meters provided by the local street. Soil conditions were as challenging - reaching from backfill to moraine with boulders of more than 20 m³ volume – as the construction period of total 12 months for the whole project, which was opened mid of November 2015.The innovative solution outperformed the client´s project from the technical and commercial aspect and helped the contractor to save time and money.The design process with its difficulties as well as erection process is described in the following paper."

By means of the T6 treatment, the measurement of creep curves and microstructure observation, the influence of T6 heat treatment on the microstructure and creep properties of Ti-6Al-4V alloy is investigated. Results show that the microstructure of the forged alloy consists of the banded-like a phase and networks b phase. After sub-temperture T6 treated, the microstructure of alloy consist of the block a phase and ?networks basket? structure. Under the conditions of the applied stress of 575 MPa at 4000C, the forged alloy displays a lower creep lifetimes, after T6 treated the creep lifetimes of the alloy is enhanced to 548 h from 66 h, which is attributed to the formation of the network basket structure in which the needle-like phase are dispersedly distributed. As creep goes on, the denser dislocations in the a phase are concentrated to occur the dynamic recrystallization for refining grain. which is a main reason of the alloy displaying a better creep lifetimes and plasticity. Thereinto, the creep mechanism of the forged alloy is thought to be the slip of the straight <a> and <a+c> dislocation are activated on the prismatic planes and pyramidal planes, while the creep mechanism of T6 treated alloy is that wave-like <a+c> dislocations are activated on the pyramidal planes.

The study of Co-rich manganese crusts has reached the level which allows to start prospecting works in the observable future, and furthermore, probably, exploitation of ore deposits. In this connection, among other goals, the necessity to analyze a distribution of ore bed parameters in details is quite urgent. Foremost, these are crust thicknesses in connection with landforms and elements of submarine mountains relief. This report is based on representative sampling made in course of research cruises run by SSC Yuzhmorgeologiya over guyots of the Magellan Seamounts. Crustal covers could overlie seafloor surfaces which are confined to a various landforms and elements of relief under the condition, that they are free of sediments. These are planed parts of a summit surfaces, edges, spurs, rectilinear parts of slopes, intermountain saddles and volcanic edifices. It is known, that crustal thicknesses are different at a various forms of relief [1]. We processed statistically the data around crustal thicknesses, which were sampled by dredging and submersible drilling (Tables 1, 2).

"Due to the use of outdated mining technology or room and pillar mining process in small coal mines, the coal recovery ratio is only 10% - 25%. In many regions of China: the damage area caused by the small coal mines amounted to nearly one hundred square kilometers. Therefore, special mining techniques must be taken to reclaim the wasted resource in disturbed coal areas. This paper focuses on the different mining methods by analyzing the longwall panel layout and abandoned gateroad (AG) distribution in in the abandoned area of Cui Jiazhai Coal Mine in northwestern China. On the basis of three-dimensional geological model, FLAC- 3D numerical simulation was employed. The abutment pressure distribution was simulated when the panel face passed through the disturbed areas. The proper angle of the inclined face was analyzed when the panel face passed through the abandoned gateroads. The results show that the head end of the face should be 13-20m ahead of the tail end. The pillars on both sides of abandoned gateroads had not been damaged at the same time, and no large-area stress concentration occurred above the main roof. Therefore, the coal reserves of disturbed areas can be successfully recovered by using underground longwall mining. INTRODUCTIONDuring the 70-90's, there were a lot of small coal mines in China. Due to their disordered mining, most of the small coal mines left a great many abandoned gateroads (defined as AG in this paper) and a large area of damage coal seam. In these type of coalfields, there exist many mining risk issues, including nonuniform stress in the overburden, flooding and hazardous gases accumulated in the gob. So how to lay out a longwall panel and successfully mining under this type of abandoned small mines is a big issue nowadays in China.As mentioned above, longwall panel is being performed in the damaged coal seams in order to increase recovery of coal reserves (Wang, 2009). However, the abandoned geteroads intersect to each other all around the area. So a series of production issues arose while the panel face is passing through these AG. Gang and Gong (2015) analyzed the roof stability and abutment pressure distribution during the face was passing those AG that were parallel and inclined to the faceline. Xie, et al. (2015) proposed the ground control mechanism by passing the AG in top-coal caving longwall mining. He recommended to stop the face advance until the roof is over, using high strength bolts and cable bolts, and grouting consolidation. This paper studies the different mining methods by analyzing the longwall panel layout and AG distribution in damage coal seams. Theoretical analysis and field observation were conducted to determine the overburden movement when the face was advancing under the AG. The pillar between face and parallel AG changes from elastic to plastic and eventually to the residual supporting status. All these three status was combined with the roof structure to establish the theoretical model to calculate the shield support capacity. Numerical modeling was employed to simulate the pillar stability and determine the abutment pressure distribution as the face inclined to the AG during longwall mining."

Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC) and Centro de Investigation Minera y Metalurgica (CIMM) commenced a five year project from 2001 to modify the treatment of the furnace dust from Teniente converter containing harmful elements like arsenic and lead. The project was supported by Japanese and Chilean governments, and a demonstration plant was installed and operated at Las Ventanas Smelter and Refinery (Division Ventanas CODELCO). The basic and detailed engineering was made by Mitsui Mining and Smelting Co., Ltd (MMS) based on the joint study among JOGMEC, CIMM and Division Ventanas CODELCO. Arsenic in flue dust is lixiviated by sulfuric acid and fixed as crystalline ferric arsenate, where leachability of arsenic will be lower enough than the regulation, 5mg/I by TCLP (Toxicity Charactaristic Leaching Procedure) of USEPA. On the other hand, the recovered copper from the dust will be fed to the copper production process at Las Ventanas Smelter and Refinery, while zinc will be recovered as the exportable product. As introducing the crystallization and growing stage, the stable crystalline ferric arsenate formation can be achieved under the normal pressure.

O tamanho de grão austenítico é um parâmetro que influencia o desempenho de tratamentos térmicos em aços, assim como suas propriedades. Neste contexto, este trabalho investigou o uso de um reativo para ataque por imersão (240ml de água destilada, 2ml de HCl, 2g de ácido pícrico e 5 gotas de detergente neutro) para avaliar a influência da temperatura e do tempo de austenitização sobre o tamanho de grão austenítico de um aço ABNT1045 austenitizado nas temperaturas de 860ºC, 950ºC e 1100ºC por intervalos de tempo de 40, 90 e 180 minutos. As amostras austenitizadas foram temperadas em água, metalograficamente preparadas e atacadas com o reativo proposto com o objetivo de se revelar os antigos contornos de grãos austeníticos. Os tamanhos de grãos foram medidos com a utilização do software UMIAS de forma a possibilitar a determinação de distribuições estatísticas com quinhentas medidas para cada condição de tratamento. As amostras foram novamente preparadas e então atacadas com Nital 2%, sendo possível avaliar a influência do tamanho de grão austenítico sobre a morfologia da martensita. Pôde-se observar que, para o aço ABNT1045, a influência da temperatura de austenitização sobre o tamanho de grão austenítico é muito evidente e mais significativa do que a do tempo. Os valores de tamanho de grão se mostraram exponencialmente dependentes da temperatura, de forma que quanto maior o tamanho de grão austenítico, mais grosseira é a estrutura martensítica e menor é a dureza do material após a têmpera em água.

BCT® - Belt Casting Technology is the new horizontal near-net-shape casting process to produce flat steel products. BCT is the revolutionary leap in casting technology, designed for the production of special and conventional steel grades. Within a partnership between Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH and SMS Siemag AG, the worldwide first caster is now in operation. SMS Siemag AG (in cooperation with Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH) has erected the first industrial-scale casting machine located at Peine steelworks. The lecture will start with an overview about the highlights of the BCT® process with regard to the mechanical engineering aspects, while the second part will present current commissioning results and operation experiences. Since December 2012, the BCT plant is running. Up to March 2015 more than 90 casts have been carried out, 26 with FeMn-alloys. Never before flat steel was casted in dimensions of 1000 mm * 15 mm and with casting speeds more than 14 m/min.

"Flotation using large volume cells has grown in importance during recent years, particularly given the increasing demand for minerals whilst ore grades are decreasing. Outotec introduced the TankCell® e300 in 2007 to enable concentrator plants to process these higher tonnages. From the beginning, TankCell® e300s with FloatForce® mixing mechanisms have demonstrated good metallurgical performance with decreased operating costs and high availability. This paper deals with specific engineering challenges that need to be considered when installing these units rather than giving examples of performance. Today there are over 100 TankCell® e300s operational worldwide. As more of these units are installed new technical challenges are encountered and solutions developed to maximize their productivity. Lessons have been learnt by operators, engineering companies and the cell manufacturers on how best to design and layout these cells in modern concentrators to ensure smooth transition from design to installation to operation. This paper presents information on important design considerations and learning that has been obtained through the design, installation and commissioning of the TankCell e300 around the world. Areas pertaining to cells layout such as feed and discharge arrangements along with items of metallurgical concern such as sampling, reagent addition and the potential benefits of installing a variable speed drive on the motor will be covered in depth."

Multiphase, irregularly-shaped randomly-oriented PARGEN particles were grown to determine the breakage/liberation characteristics of such locked particles. The simulated locked particles were randomly broken to establish the liberation characteristics of the broken fragments. The progeny size distributions are consistent with Gilvarry&apos;s volume and surface flaw model for single particle breakage. The extent of liberation of both continuous and dispersed phases can be described from the conservation of interfacial area. In this regard the data can be normalized and liberation described for a wide range of dispersed phase grades and dispersion densities.
