Nas plantas onde o Precipitador Eletrostático já está instalado, a solução com o melhor custo-benefício para reduzir as emissões de material particulado abaixo de 20 mg/Nm3 é com o Filtro Híbrido. Esta tecnologia consiste em combinação dos princípios de operação de um Precipitador Eletrostático (utilizado na entrada do sistema), com uso de campo elétrico para separação de material particulado do fluxo gasoso, e de um Filtro de Mangas (utilizado na saída do sistema), com uso de tecido para retenção de material particulado. Salienta-se que a viabilidade de implementação do Filtro Híbrido depende da configuração original do Precipitador Eletrostático (i.e. altura das placas, número de campos, largura da carcaça) que determina o espaço disponível para mangas, bem como as velocidades máximas do gás dentro da carcaça. Na indústria siderúrgica, este tipo de retrofit já é utilizado em planta de sinterização, mas também é aplicável para despoeiramento de fornos de cal e de plantas de pelotização.

In 2019 the Chinese Ministry of Ecology and Environment issued guidelines promoting the implementation of ultra-low emissions in the iron and steelmaking industry. These guidelines aim to drive improvements in air quality through the reduction of particulate matter (PM), sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxide (NOx). Secondly, it also represents an initial means to commence decarbonisation of the industry. The ultra-low emissions guidelines propose that well over 80 per cent of China’s production capacity will achieve these targets by 2025. In response, many sintering operations have implemented numerous improvements to the process that result in significant efficiency gains. Of note is the adoption of deep bed sintering where, with some modifications to equipment, the sintering bed depth is increased resulting in sizable reductions of SO2 and NOx emissions. This paper will also provide an overview of the requirements to introduce deep-bed sintering into an operation and highlight test work completed which quantifies the resultant reduction in emissions.

"INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Mines began a broad program of exploration of various proportion in the Pine Creek area of the Coeur d'Alene mining region in the fall of 1943. As a part of this project, exploring was done at theLittle Pittsburg property in 1945. The work included driving a 500-foot crosscut from the No, 6 level and drilling four diamond core drill holes to test the behavior of the Little Pittsburg vein at depth. This report presents the data obtained by the Bureau.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources, to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. A manutenção de monumentos e obras históricas deve ser executada com o uso de argamassa de cal, devido à sua maior permeabilidade e por preservar as características originais da obra. Entretanto, o uso de revestimento de tinta acrílica comercial sobre esta argamassa interfere na permeabilidade da construção como um todo, por vedar a superfície das paredes e tetos, internos e externos. Como uma alternativa que permite maior permeabilidade, tem-se a tinta à base de solo, constituída de água, cola branca e solo rico em silte e argila. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo quantificar e comparar as permeabilidades de amostras de argamassa de cal revestidas com tinta acrílica e com tinta de solo. Usou-se o método do tubo de Karsten para medir a permeabilidade dos dois revestimentos em comparação com a argamassa de cal sem revestimento. Os resultados dos ensaios indicaram que o revestimento de tinta à base de solo apresenta permeabilidade significativamente maior que a acrílica, sendo então mais indicada para o uso em restauro e manutenção de edificações históricas.

A maneira com que acontece a nucleação interfere diretamente na forma dos contornos de grão e também nas propriedades do material em questão. Para visualizar melhor, pode-se utilizar uma célula cúbica, na qual é possível notar que em cada eixo há diferença de textura e densidade entre os grãos já desenvolvidos. Neste trabalho, foram empregadas duas vias de estudo a fim de obter os resultados desejados. A primeira delas é a nucleação homogênea dos grãos e a outra, a nucleação não homogênea, ambas com velocidade constante. Esse fenômeno pode ser visto durante a recristalização de grãos. Rios e Villa [6] criaram um método efetivo para analisar a cinética das transformações homogêneas e não homogêneas a partir do método de JMAK[1-5]. Para comparar método analítico foi desenvolvida uma simulação computacional com base no modelo analítico Rios e Villa [6], foi utilizado a metodologia do Cone Causal (método estocástico). Os gráficos gerados confirmam a teoria de Rios e Villa [6] para esses casos particulares e comparam os resultados obtidos com o conceito de JMAK [1-5].

O processo termomecânico de laminação controlada seguido de resfriamento acelerado permite obter aços de elevada resistência mecânica e tenacidade e excelente soldabilidade, com o emprego de menores adições de elementos de liga, além da exclusão de tratamentos térmicos posteriores. Com a aquisição do sistema de resfriamento acelerado pela Usiminas, CLC, diversos aços vêm sendo desenvolvidos. Este trabalho apresenta a caracterização microestrutural e mecânica relativa à fabricação do aço API 5L X80, utilizando resfriamento acelerado. Foram avaliados os resultados de dois projetos de liga, Nb-Cr-Mo-Ti e Nb-V-Ti, com a laminação terminando no campo intercrítico. O aço Nb-V-Ti foi processado, também, com a laminação concluída no campo austenítico. Em todos, os testes a resistência mecânica e a tenacidade atenderam aos requisitos especificados pela API 5L. Embora a microestrutura dos aços tenha sido distinta em função das suas condições de processamento, a laminação do aço Nb-V-Ti no campo austenítico foi mais vantajosa em consequência de ganhos em produtividade e estabilidade operacional.

The development of computer techniques over the past ten years for solving these and ancillary problems is reviewed. The emphasis from a planning and control point of view falls mainly on ventilation network calculations, temperature predictions and advance estimates of methane emission.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a feasibility study and designed an operational system for consolidating waste coal sludge in a 110-acre pond by applying direct current between buried and floating electrodes. Consolidation would reduce the sludge to half its present volume, there-by extending the working life of the pond as well as creating a safe, stable impoundment. The project was conducted by the Bureau under an agreement with the Washington Irrigation and Development Co. (WIDCO), located near Centralia, WA. Part 1 of this report, published as Report of Investigation 8666 in 1982, covers the results of laboratory tests at the Bureau's Spokane Research Center and of a small-scale field test at WIDeO's coal preparation plant. Test results show the process is efficient and cost-effective when power is applied at low current density. Part 2 (this paper) describes a detailed design for an electrokinetic system to dewater WIDCO's 110-acre pond with a 27.4-acre electrode array. Densification of the inactive sludge pond will require 3.6 yr of treatment for a total cost of $1,450,000. The study and design are site specific, but design procedures and analyses are sufficiently detailed to serve as a guide for applying the process to any sludge pond.

The standard method of employing preliminary air-drying to determine the moisture in coal has been criticized with respect to the loss of heating value from excessive air-drying. By this method, the coal is air-dried at approximately 10-15° above room temperature with the loss in weight being less than 0.1 percent per hour, and then the residual moisture at 105°C is determined. The total moisture is calculated from these two values.

"IntroductionThe introduction to this section on gravity concentration indicated the wide range of equipment types that exist for the concentration of minerals, in what is the broadest size range of any concentration process.The equipment described in this chapter includes jigs, tables and sHme plant equipment. In contrast to the equipment described in the two succeeding chapters, this range of equipment, in nearly every instance, superimposes a mechanical movement on the fluid motion to effect separation of the valuable mineral from the waste mineral. The motion may be vertical Gigs), reversing (tables), or rotary (slime plants): however, in common they ""dilate"" the bed of particles to allow preferential settlement of the heavier particles.Description of Process UnitsJiggingJigging is the sorting of different minerals by stratification, based on the movement of a bed of particles relative to a fluid in a vertical plane.The basic construction of a jig is shown in Figure 1. Essentially it consists of an open tank filled with a fluid, normally water, with a horizontal jig screen at the top and with a spigot in the ""hutch"", or bottom compartment, for removal of heavies. The jig beri consists of a layer of coarse heavy particles (ragging) on the jig screen. This ragging is of a specific gravity between that of the minerals it is intended to separate.In operation the bed is made fluid by a pulsating current of fluid to provide stratification. On the upward or pulsion stroke the bed of ragging and slurry is normally Hfted as a mass, then as velocity of the upcurrent decreases it dilates, loosening the whole mass. On the downward or suction stroke it closes slowly again. The ideal is to control this dilation of the bed of material so that the heavier and smaller particles penetrate the interstices of the bed, while the larger heavies fall under a condition akin to ""hindered"" settling."

Oxygen converting of hot metal (LD/BOF) is contemplated as an object of simulation. Oxygen converting is a highly complex thermo-chemical process comprising a series of matter and energy transformation and transportation steps that makes the simulation very challenging. The basic principles of CONSIM 5 oxygen converter simulator are presented. Simulator is a comprehensive combination of a physical model with several empirical submodels describing all properties and processes that affect the final result of a converter blow, final mass and composition of steel, slag, dust and converter gas as well as the end temperature of steel. CONSIM simulator is used for simulation of series of high and low carbon steel blows. Simulated steel temperatures, oxygen consumption, blow time and iron oxide content of slag are compared with measured values. Problems of simulation and requirements for quantitative simulation of oxygen converter process are discussed.

Much new data on the flow of gases have been discovered by recent experiments by the United States Bureau of Mines and others. Although additional investigation is still desirable, the information now collected seems sufficient to attempt a tentative coördination of the friction factors. This study is confined entirely to fluid friction when the density throughout the duct is so nearly constant that it may be so considered. The Gerdau Ouro Branco Mill, three years after the implementation of its new plate mill, has started to develop high complexity products. The plate mill’s learning curve has been increasingly challenging since products are being developed to their highest grades. This work aims to present the first results of the development of steels of the strength class of 510 MPa produced by TMCP (Thermomechanical Controlled Processing) followed by accelerated cooling. These results show the potential and advantage of the accelerated cooling process regarding to obtain products of high mechanical strength and high toughness, associated with a low equivalent carbon.

Geologists or mining engineers familiar with geology are frequently requested by mine operators to give correlation in-formation regarding some mining property with respect to an adjacent area on one at some greater distance. It is the object of this article to mention a few of the difficulties involved in securing this information and to point out some of the salient factors upon which correlation is dependent. In view of the nature of the following discussion, a brief statement of the general character of coal formations .. seems appropriate. Coal formations, by reason of their environment of deposition which is in fresh or brackish water, exhibit the features common to continental deposits, in contrast to those of marine deposits. Such deposits are characterized by rapid variation in thickness and in lithological character both later-ally and vertically. (Plate 1 A). They consist essentially of sandstones and clay shales with all gradations between them, and also a few beds of coal and frequently some conglomerates.

This Paper contains a comprehensive survey of the known electron-hole radiative recombination mechanisms in the family of III-V compounds. Because of space limitations, the luminescence properties of each III- V compound are not reviewed separately and exhaustively. Instead, the different known types of recombination processes are discussed in turn and exemplified with reference to the III- V compound in which they were first recognized, or are best understood. Electron-hole recombinations usually occur predominantly at impurities or lattice defects either introduced de1iberately or inadvertently present, but radiative intrinsic interband electron-hole recombinations, which occur in perfect crystals, have been observed. Recombination processes which involve the participation of impurities or lattice defects ("extrinsic" recombinations) considered include transitions in which a) free carriers recombine with carriers trapped at impurities ("free to bound" transitions) , b) electrons bound at donor impurities recombine with holes trapped at acceptor impurities ("donor-acceptor pair" recombinations), C) excitons bound to charged or neutral donor or acceptor impurities recombine radiatively (both "resonance" and "two-electron" "bound exci-ton" transitions have been observed), d) excitons bound to neutral donor or acceptor impurities recombine non-radiatively (an example of an "Auger" recombination), and e) excitons bound to impurities with the same number of valence electrons as the host atom which they replace ("isoelectronic " traps) recombine radiatively. In addition, Auger recombination processes involving one or more free carriers have been observed. These extrinsic processes all involve impurities which are present as point defects. Some apparently well-authenticated examples of the recombination of excitons bound to complex impurity-lattice defect centers including nearest-neighbor donor-acceptor pairs are also discussed. Identificalions of the transitions involved in stimulated emission from the direct gap III-V compounds are briefly reviewed. Although the examples of these recombination mechanisms are selected from the III-IV compounds ia this review, these processes have quite general relevance in semiconducting crystalline solids; irrdeed most of them have also been identified in the 11- VI compounds and elernental semzconductors. THE development of crystal growth and purification techniques in recent years and concurrent advances in the understanding of physical processes in solids has accelerated the development of a wide variety of solid-state electronic devices of proven utility. These de- vices are generally used for switching or amplifying operations in electrical circuits. Most solid-state circuit elements are very photosensitive. This photo-sensitivity is generally undesirable and the single-crystal chip forming the active portion of the solid-state device is mounted in an opaque container. The photosensitivity is made use of in phototransis-tors and photodiodes, which are among the most sensitive detectors of electromagnetic radiation particularly in the near infrared.' In these devices, light is converted into electrical power. The solid-state lamp utilizes the inverse effect, namely the conversion of electrical power into light. There is an increasing tendency to use single-crystal diodes rather than the earlier electroluminescent cells in which the active material is present as a powder embedded in a suitable dielectric.' The radiation is emitted at a rate far in excess of the thermal equilibrium rate for the frequencies and temperatures involved; i.e., luminescence occurs. The development of practically efficient solid-state lamps is at an early stage compared with solid- state circuit elements or even photodetectors. Considerable progress has been made in recent years, however.3 The present review is devoted to a survey of the radiative recombination processes in the semiconducting compound crystalline solids formed from elements in groups I11 and V in the periodic table. These materials exhibit the full range of known recombination processes in solids. In fact many of these processes were discovered in 111-V semiconductors. Nonradiative recombination processes, which control the lutninescence efficiency, are also discussed. Luminescence is efficiently excited in semiconductors through processes which produce large excess concentrations of free electrons and holes in the energy bands of the crystal. Transitions induced by lattice defects or impurities usually predominate in the recombination process. By contrast, luminescence in the conventional fluorescent lamp is excited by optical absorption at the luminescent impurity center itself (the activator) and/or at a second type of impurity center (the sensitizer). This latter type of photoluminescence process, occurring in doped ionic crystals with wide band gaps, is outside the scope of this review.4 I) ENERGY BAND DESCRIPTION OF ELECTRON STATES IN CRYSTALS The energy band description of the energy states available to an electron in a crystal forms the basis of our understanding of the empirical division of crystalline solids into metals, semiconductors, and insulators in accordance with their electrical and optical properties.' "INTRODUCTION Spodumene and lepidolite were shipped from the Harding pegmatite deposit, Taos County, N. Mex., in the period from 1930 to 1930. Tantalum minerals were noted as early as 1924 and described in 1931 3/ but no tantalum ore was shipped until 1942. Oxide particles are commonly used as fillers in plastics, paper, rubber etc. (particulate composites). The successful fabrication of such composites is dependent upon the adhesive strength of the filler particles to the matrix. The compatibility of the matrix and the filler particles is generally enhanced by adsorption of surface modifiers such as surfactants and polymers at the particle-matrix interface. In order to develop a scientific basis for selection of appropriate modifiers it is necessary to understand their adsorption mechanism(s). Specifically, adsorption of polymeric additives is attributed to a combination of chemical and electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding and van der Waals forces. Hydrogen bonding has been suggested to be the primary adsorption mechanism for non-ionic polymers. However, a literature survey of Poly(ethylene oxide)(PEO)-oxide system suggested PEO, a non-ionic polymer, to be substrate specific. A systematic study was undertaken to investigate the adsorption mechanism(s) of a PEO on oxide particles. It was determined that strong Bronsted acid sites on the surface interact with the ether oxygen, a Lewis base, of PEO to induce adsorption. In this work characterization of PEO binding sites on oxides is reported and the mechanism(s) of PEO adsorption discussed.

"An existing four lane section of US 27 was widened to eight lanes. The project lies in the rugged Valley and Ridge Province of the Appalachian mountains starting at the Tennessee River in Chattanooga, Tennessee and extending 2.6 km north to Signal Mountain Boulevard. This terrain presented many challenges to accommodate the road widening in the narrow, rugged topography. Multiple tiered wall systems consisting of large tieback walls, post-tensioned reaction blocks, and gravity MSE walls for a total of approximately 30 retaining walls were required. The retaining walls served to stabilize the thrust faulted geology while also minimizing right-of-way acquisitions. The cut walls consist mainly of a tiered system of tied-back soldier piles walls with cast-in-place concrete facing. Cast-in-place pile shear walls were required along the toe of existing MSE walls to maintain stability during construction. This paper discusses the design methodology, which includes a hybrid (rather than traditional) earth pressure diagram intended to reduce life-cycle maintenance and long-term performance. Further this paper addresses wall construction, slope stability analysis, landslide mitigation alternatives, soldier pile wall design features, site challenges, monitoring and performance (to date) of the wall systems.INTRODUCTIONThis project involves the proposed widening of US Highway 27 (State Route 29) from the north end of the Tennessee River Bridge at Manufacturer’s Road to State Route 8 (Signal Mountain Road), approximately 2.64 km of roadway (Fig. 1). The project site is located adjacent to the Tennessee River on the north side of downtown Chattanooga, Tennessee in Hamilton County. The existing, limited access highway is to be widened from four lanes (two northbound and two southbound) to a minimum of eight lanes. Some portions of the alignment will expand to as much as ten lanes where northbound and southbound ramp acceleration/deceleration lanes coincide.In addition to the number and heights of cuts and fills involved, a major factor in determining an economical design for the alignment is the complicated geologic conditions along the roadway alignment. The existing roadway is situated between several steep cut slopes, some of which are only marginally stable or currently exhibit signs of instability. Due to the proximity of the project to the downtown area, the steep slopes along the alignment, and the relatively dense population near the alignment, widening the pavement and constructing cut and fill slopes to a stable configuration would result in major land acquisition for slope right-of-way."
