IT has long been known that the density of a metal usually decreases with cold-work. Thus O'Neilll observed as early as 1861 that cold hammering of commercial hot-rolled copper is accompanied by a decrease of density of 0.2 per cent, and that subsequent annealing restores the original density. The origin of this density change, however, has remained obscure. In particular, experiment has not yet decided whether it is due to the presence of small cavities and an increase in inter-granular surface or to an actual expansion of the lattice itself. This uncertainty in the origin of the change in density is a reflection of our uncertainty as to the changes induced in a metal by cold-working. One school regards cold-working as a breaking up of the original grains into a large number of perfect crystallites somewhat randomly orientated with respect to one another.2 According to this viewpoint, the mere introduction of a large intercrystallite surface induces a net volume expansion. Another school regards cold-working primarily as a distortion of the grains. It is not obvious that this second viewpoint will lead to a net volume expansion. The purpose of the present paper is to show that this is indeed the case, and that this expansion is of the right order of magnitude to explain existing experimental data. The physical basis for the association of an expansion with distortion lies essentially in the variation of the elastic moduli with volume. This variation is considerable. Thus from Table I we see that a I per cent increase in volume for the case of copper will decrease the bulk modulus K by 10 per cent, the shearing modulus µ by 3.8 per cent. If we thus twist a rod through a given angle, we shall do less work upon it if it increases slightly in volume, thereby reducing the torsion modulus that involves as a factor the shearing modulus. A general principle3 in physics states that the rod will so adjust itself as to have a minimum potential energy consistent with the end restraints. It will therefore expand. In order to obtain a quantitative comparison with experiment, we follow Maier4 in comparing the lattice expansion with the latent energy of cold-work. This latent energy has been measured directly by Taylor and Quinney5 on copper rods subjected to torsion, and may amount to as much as 15 per cent of the total work done upon the specimens. Compressed air has been and is still very extensively used in connection with mining-operations, but its application in the past has been almost entirely confined to supplying power to underground machinery. Its introduction was due to the difficulty of taking care of the steam which is exhausted underground, rather than to any advantage in efficiency to be gained by its use. The ease with which electric power may be carried to the remotest parts of the mine and the high efficiency of the electric motor have long been appreciated by mine-operators, and electric power is now extensively used underground in the more recent developments, while many of the compressed-air engines in the older workings are being rapidly replaced by electric motors. Recently, however, it has been suggested to use compressed air for driving the large shaft-hoists, the air for the engines being supplied by electrically-driven compressors, and an installation of this character is being erected at Butte, Mont. It is the object of this paper to compare the compressed-air system of hoisting with the various electrical systems, from the stand-points of first-cost and cost of operation. However, before entering into a discussion of the various systems, it will be well to consider briefly the conditions affecting the choice of a system of hoisting in which electricity is the ultimate source of power. The power required by a mine-hoist is extremely intermittent and fluctuates between very wide limits, the all-day average consumption of power not exceeding from 5 to 15 per cent. of the maximum demand during hoisting. The problems and concerns of this extraction system are addressed, and typical extended cutting face operations are described.

Federal and State surface coal mining regulations require special handling of prime soil materials which result in additional costs, and no actual benefit when prime and non-prime soils are similar. The Coteau Properties Company proposes to mix both prime and non-prime topsoil and subsoils at the Freedom Mine in Mercer County, North Dakota, based on an analysis of soil physical and chemical characteristics which show these materials to be comparable.

"A simple analysis of site conditions and capability of the mechanised depillaring (MD) operation found that this approach is suitable to address the strata control issues in coal pillar extraction under the weak and laminated roof strata of Pinoura mine. A continuous miner (CM) with a ram car and quad-bolter are used for single pass pillar extraction (first time in the country) to achieve a relatively faster rate of depillaring. A total of eleven panels are depillared under weak and laminated roof strata with a fair-rated rock mass rating (CMRI-RMR). It is observed that there is less influence of roof caving over the surrounding mining structures, especially those located out-bye the side of the extraction line. An attempt is made to quantify the goaf influence by field studies, which show that the maximum value of mining-induced vertical stress is 2.83 MPa, and the range of influence remains limited to around 15 m from the line of extraction. However, the problem of roof instability under the influenced zone was experienced due to the inherent nature of the weak roof strata. The chances of trapping of CM under weak and laminated roof strata of the panels is reduced by deriving a threshold value of the roof dilation, on the basis of a simple statistical analysis of the obtained field results. However, few incidences of roof collapses are observed over the CM due to the unpredictable behaviour of the geological structures below the freshly exposed strata, which also caused an obstruction in the speed of the extraction. This paper presents results of the field and laboratory studies, conducted for a successful application of the single-pass pillar extraction method, along with details of some CM trapping cases below the weak and laminated roof strata.INTRODUCTIONCoal is the major natural resource to meet the growing energy demand of India and this trend is likely to continue for the next 20 years in the country. A major part of the Indian coal belongs to Gondwana period, and only a small part belongs to Tertiary period. The estimated coal reserve in India per the exploration work done up to a maximum depth of 1200 m is 315.149 billion tonnes, including the proven coal reserve of 143.058 billion tonnes (CMPDIL, 2017). Even in presence of these huge resources of coal in India, there is a considerable gap between production and the users’ demand of coal. Most of the mines are operated by conventional semi-mechanised Bord and Pillar (B&P) methods; thus, the mining industry has gained a considerable amount of operational experience (Singh, Singh, and Dhar, 1996) and knowledge about strata behaviour (Singh and Singh, 1999; Singh et al., 2008) using this method. However, recently, the Indian coal mining industry has introduced some mechanised depillaring (MD) operations, where the level of production is relatively high. This approach of depillaring improves safety along with the production and productivity of a depillaring operation (Ram et al., 2017). The nature of the overlying strata of these depillaring operations vary greatly: from highly laminated, weak, and easily caveable to massive, strong, and difficult to cave."

The Red Lake greenstone belt is an irregular mass of lavas sedimentary rocks and intrusives which is approxiately 35 miles long 18 miles wide and 7 miles deep. Basaltic volcamcs are the oldest rocks w1thm the belt. They are believed to have been laid down on an ancient crust which is at least 3 billion (3 x 109) years old and was composed partly of sediments. The basaltic rocks are overlain by acid volcanics and sedimentary rocks which have been complexly folded and are preserved as a down-folded remnant of younger rocks within the older crust. The volcanics and sedimentary rocks of the greenstone belt have been cut by intrusives with a wide range of composition. The emplacement of the intrusives and the accompanying regional metamorph-ism which terminated the orogenic activity in this area are believed to have occurred approximately 2.4 billion years ago. The basalts and many of the basic and ultrabasic intrusives undoubtedly had their source in the sub-crust or mantle. At least some of the granitic intrusives are believed to have had

As escórias de aciaria, além de ser um coproduto da fabricação do aço, desempenham um papel importante na qualidade dos aços produzidos. Entender como elas se comportam durante o processo de refino é fundamental. Por exemplo, no refino secundário, a absorção de inclusões pela escória é umas das principais formas de se obter aços com maior limpeza inclusionária, e consequentemente, mais nobres. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo a caracterização de fases de escórias de refino secundário do sistema CMAS (CaO, MgO, Al2O3, SiO2), a fim de se obter informações a respeito de sua composição e fração líquida, além de prováveis fases sólidas. Para isso, quatro amostras de diferentes composições químicas foram fundidas em forno elétrico resistivo a altas temperaturas. As amostras também foram analisadas por diferentes técnicas como: microscopia eletrônica de varredura com sistema EDS acoplado (MEV/EDS), difração de raios X e simulação termodinâmica. Os resultados obtidos experimentalmente foram condizentes com as simulações termodinâmicas e com os resultados encontrados na literatura.

High Pressure Grinding Roll (HPGR) is efficient equipment in comminution process. HPGR could be a good option for preparing ball mill feed at the first stage of grinding due to its high efficiency and low energy consumption. Closing with a screen, these mills are utilizing as one of the principle parts in mineral processing industries, especially for iron ores. Recently, HPGRs are working as primary mills at 4 developing lines in Gol-e-Gohar Iron Ore Processing Complex, Iran. Different mechanism of particle crushing in compare to the other tumbling mills makes the HPGR as certain equipment with its own particular controlling parameters. Hydraulic pressure, roller speed and level of material inside feeding hopper are the most important variables influencing grinding efficiency of the HPGR. To figure out how they impress the process and operation situation, different industrial tests were carried out and the best result (d80 about 8 mm for HPGR discharge) was achieved at 180-190 bar pressure (P), 300 rpm speed (S) and 50% of hopper level (L). It is worth noting that this finding has been observed through past pilot test too. We also used design expert method (DX7 software) to develop the best design and analysis the test results, as well. According to the mechanical restriction of HPGR and process limitation in the plant (based on the industrial results), we adjusted value of each parameter in a logical range. Therefore, 20 industrial tests were conducted, as DX7 recommended, and the various impacts of the parameters and their interaction were identified based on statistical analysis. As the authors expected, it was revealed that after presser, roller speed is a critical variable because of its significant role in residence time of the particles between the rollers. The function below has been determined to explain the relation between different parameters and the response.

Glass-reinforced polymer bolts, commonly known as fibreglass dowels and fibre-reinforced polymer or plastic bolts or plastic dowels are increasingly applied for strata reinforcement in mines as well as in concrete reinforcement in civil engineering. The most popular dowels used in coalmines are the 22?mm diameter fully threaded type. Fibreglass and plastic bolts are cuttable, easy to handle, lightweight and corrosive resistant. A series of tests were undertaken to evaluate various strength properties of fibreglass dowels. These included tensile failure tests by the double-embedment method, a single guillotine shear test and a double shear test, carried out on dowels installed in concrete blocks, and with punch shear tests. Punch shear tests were used to evaluate the dowel shear strength parallel and perpendicular to the fibreglass strands or elements direction of extrusion. The study found that the tensile strength of the 22?mm diameter fibreglass dowels was in the order of 30?t. In the shear testing, the peak shear load was influenced by the encapsulation grout type and the level of fibreglass axial pretension. The Brewer mine, near Jefferson, Chesterfield County, S. C., was originally operated as a gold mine. As late as 1890 this mine was reported to have been one of the large gold producers in the southeast. Occurrence of topaz on the Brewer property was not reported until 1935, when it was discovered, by Parks3/ and Parks of the Federal Geological Survey while they were investigating gold deposits in the Piedmont province.

"The cathodic kinetics of aluminum deposition from aluminum chloridealkali chloride melts was studied by use of electro-cnemical transient techniques at 700 °C. Aluminum deposited as an insoluble product on a glassy carbon electrode and as a partly soluble product on a tungsten electrode. The deposition was found to be a simple diffusion controlled process involving the exchange of three electrons. The diffusion coefficient of aluminum chloride was calculated - 4.sx10-s cm2 ·S-I in AlCl3 -NaCl-LiCl melts and 2.6x10-s cm2 ·S-' in AlCl3 -NaCl-KCl melts. For AlCl3 -NaCl-CsCl system the diffusion coefficient exhibited some uncertainty due to nucleation. The determined rate constant of aluminum deposition reaction was on the order of 10-' -10-2 cm'S:' Constant potential electrolysis was carried out. TiB2 was well wetted by aluminum. The species of melts penetrated into graphite and glassy carbon but not into tungsten. The diffusion coefficient of species in glassy carbon was evaluated.IntroductionAluminum chloride electrolysis is attractive for its power saving of 30%. Different process to circumvent the conventional chlorization to obtain aluminum chloride economically, such as directly chlorizating mixture of Al~03 and C in a cell with A-shaped laminated bipolar electrodes by rising chlorine (1), or by use of a composite anode (2), will promote the electrolysis technology to be realized industrially. With the appearance of the Alcoa process periodically there are studies on the kinetics of aluminum deposition. Some discrepancies seem to exist on the mechanism of aluminum deposition. Borne studies (3,4,5) showed that the deposition of aluminum was hindered by diffusion process in the melts. M.Gabco et a1. (6) claimed a preceding dissociation of a complex being the rate controlled step. This paper presents our results on the mechanism of aluminum deposition from the study by use of transient techniques and some results from constant potential electrolysis."

THE first paper1 of this series described a technique of careful surface preparation by means of which reproducible results may be obtained from potential measurements of the behavior of tin in carbonate solutions with a pH range from 8.4 to 11.2. It then went on to establish the behavior of pure tin electrodes under these conditions and showed that the metal remains active at all times, though the steady potential attained after several hours decreases from I.I2[t] volts at a pH of 12.6 to 0.6 volts at a pH of 8.4. This behavior may serve as a norm with which all other data can be compared. In the second paper,2 small amounts of other anions were added to the carbonate solutions and the conclusion was reached that the common impurities encountered in alkaline materials packaged in tin do not increase corrosion. In fact, in some cases these anions may actually promote the formation of protective films. The present paper rounds out this survey by presenting data on the influence of cations added to the carbonate solutions, as well as the effect of alloy additions to the tin. In many cases the potential data are supplemented with weight-loss measurements. Information is also presented on the effects of some additional anions, the influence of gases above the electrolyte, the behavior of high-purity tin, and the effect of atmospheric oxidation on the corrosion resistance of the above-named alloys. Analysis of the entire body of data discloses some general rules applicable to corrosion in carbonate solutions. The experimental methods used are the same as those previously described. EXPERIMENTAL DATA Cations.-The carbonates of the cations K+, Li+, NH4+, which are soluble, were studied in the same way as the anions, by adding 0.01 mol of the metal carbonate to one liter of 0.2 M sodium carbonate solution, pH 11.2, or to 0.1 M sodium bicarbonate, pH 8.4. The other metallic carbonates are only slightly soluble, of the order of 0 7-3 mols per liter or less, and the sodium carbonate solutions were saturated by adding excess reagent several days before the experiment, shaking frequently, and filtering just before use. The chemicals were c.p. grade in each case except the indium salt. This salt was prepared by solution of the metal in hydrochloric acid and precipitation by addition of Na2CO3. These cations may be divided into two classes, according to their effect on the potential behavior of the tin: (I) normal, (2) passive. To offer a basis of comparison, curves I of Figs. The aluminous nature of the laterites capping the Minim Martap plateaus - named after two neighbouring villages - and the small nearby upland of Ngaoundal, was discovered by the Cameroon Mines and Geology Division in 1958. These deposits of worldwide importance, are located in the Ngaoundere region, some 500 km (300 miles) north-east from the port of Douala (as the crow flies). They constitute the major part of the Cameroonese mining potential. The study of the deposits and their economic development has been entrusted to SEBACAM, Societe d'Etudes des Bauxites du Cameroun, a company in which the Cameroon government participates. The bauxites originate from the transformation into laterite of lavas which covered a Precambrian basement during the Upper Cretaceous period and the Lower Tertiary era. The entire Minim Martap deposit comprises bauxite plateaus ranging in area from a few acres to several square miles. The average thickness of the bauxite layer varies from 10 metres at Minim Martap to 17 metres at Ngaoundal. The mineral constituents of the bauxite are gibbsite trihydrate, kaolinite and the usual iron and titanium oxides. Treatment of the ore does not involve any particular technical problems. It is the responsibility of educators to look ahead and prepare young engineers and scientists to cope with industrial and social problems of the future. We are faced with a review of history as well as prophesy of the future. The mining industry exists in a "bubble" with little interaction or communication with the outside. This isolation must be broken down if the industry is to survive in the U.S. and Canada. The ability to communicate with the general public and public officials is essential. Many changes are occurring that will require readjustments in technology and staffing. Aging population will result in raising retirement and increasing available workforce. This may force shorter working weeks to supply additional jobs. Environmental concerns will likely direct more attention not only to these concerns during mining, but to planning for post-mining land usage. Retraining and up-dating educational programs are required to cope with these changes.

"This paper describes the optic fiber structural monitoring system implemented for Pavoncelli Bis tunnel. The paper highlights the optic fiber sensors customization capabilities, how they smoothly fit precast concrete lining processes and TBM operations, and how a lifelong service monitoring can be achieved. An overview of readings’ evolution during excavation concludes the paper.INTRODUCTIONPavoncelli Bis is a 10 km hydraulic tunnel designed to by-pass the existing Pavoncelli tunnel which experienced severe damages during the 1980 Irpino-Lucano earthquake, in south of Italy (Barla 2009). Pavoncelli Bis excavation work commenced in 1988-90, however, when excavation approached pk. 0+583 in 1992, water percolations became more and more consistent and resulted in work suspension. The tunnel was eventually sealed at pk. 0+383, leaving a flooded section between pk. 0.383 and pk. 0+583. Work resumed in 2012 where EPB-TBM excavation was adopted to cross the flooded section and to overcome complex hydro-geological conditions in various lito-types and, in particular, in the Varicolori Clay-shales area (Figure 1).Consequently, stress evolution monitoring is extremely important during construction and during the service life of tunnel lining in clay-shales and in faults areas. In particular, the paper focuses on the monitoring system proposed for the newly EPB-TBM excavated portion from pk 0+583 onwards where optic fiber sensing technology was chosen for its reading stability and reliability in presence of water and its ability to be connected in series and remotely interrogated at kilometers of distance. FBGS OPTICAL FIBER SENSOR TECHNOLOGYFiber Bragg Grating Sensors (FBGS) are gaining increasing attention in the field of experimental stress analysis. Basically, Fiber Optic Bragg Sensors are strain-measuring devices and therefore provide many of the advantages of the well-known metal foil strain gages (Kreuzer 2007).Bragg gratings are written into so called single-mode fibers. These fibers consist of a very small inner core of 4 to 9 µm diameter and an outer part (cladding) of pure glass (SiO2) of 125 µm diameter. The difference of refraction indexes between inner core and cladding causes the light to propagate only inside the small core."

"The influences of citric acid (CA) on the flotation behavior of cassiterite using styrene phosphonic acid (SPA) as the collector were studied via single mineral flotation tests, contact angle measurements, zeta potential determinations and solution chemistry calculations in this paper. The results of single mineral flotation tests revealed under the conditions that pH=4 and the dosage of SPA 100 mg/L, the recovery of cassiterite reached 76.78%. The addition of 20 mg/L AC decreased the recovery by 12.42% at pH=4. Contact angle measurements demonstrated the adsorption of CA prior to SPA made the cassiterite more hydrophilic. The results of zeta potential determinations and solution chemistry calculations indicated the chemisorption of C6H7O7- and C6H6O72- filled parts of the Sn site on cassiterite surface and prevented the SPA from getting adsorbed. The hydrophilic effect of AC was stronger than the hydrophobic effect of SPA and the flotation of cassiterite was crippled. INTRODUCTION Tin is an important metal which is widely used in medical instruments, marine engineering materials, electronic and electrical devices, welding, weapon manufacturing and organotin compounds industries (Angadi et al., 2015). Cassiterite is the only mineral from which the tin can be extracted, thus it is of great importance to efficiently exploit the cassiterite mineral. Flotation is an indispensable method for the recovery of cassiterite (Li et al., 2015). However, cassiterite is usually in association with many other gangue minerals which are of similar floatability, such as quartz, calcite, fluorite, iron oxide, wolframite, scheelite and tourmaline (Sreevinas, 1997). So some modifiers are necessary in the cassiterite flotation process. The amounts of the modifiers used in the flotation must be judicious and the overmuch modifiers may cripple the recovery of cassiterite (Parsonage et al., 1987). Nevertheless, the research about the effects of the modifiers on the flotation behavior of cassiterite has been rarely reported. In this paper, the influences of citric acid (CA) on the flotation of cassiterite using styrene phosphonic acid (SPA) as the collector were investigated by flotation tests, contact angle measurements, zeta potential determinations and solution chemistry calculations."

The feldspars are a series of related aluminum silicates containing varying proportions of potash, soda, rind lime; smaller amounts of other minerals arc likely to be present as impurities. They comprise three principal types: Potash spars, microline and orthoclase (KA12Si208); soda feldspar or albite (NaA1Si308); and soda-lime e (plagioclase) fellspars. The last-named is an intermediate group ranging from albite through oligoclase, andesine, labradorite, and bytownite to anorthite or line feldspar (CnA12Si2O8), Minor varieties are barium feldspar or celsian and a potash-barium feldspar. Perthite is a mixture of orthoclase end albite in alternate layers. Graphic granite or "corduroy spar" is an intergrowth of feldspar and quartz characteristically in the ratio of 3:1. Cornwall stone is a natural mixture of feldspar, quartz, end kaolinite imported in former years in sizable quantity from Cornwall, England. (A similar synthetic mixture, including some fluorspar, has been blended and marketed in the United States as "Carolina stone".)

A portable, handheld infrared scanner has been used to detect abnormal surface temperature on dumps of flood-generated trash near Wilkes-Barre, Pa. Three of eight dumps examined had thermal anomalies on the surface, indicating temperature buildup at depth. The anomalies found with the scanner were verified by measurements with a thermocouple probe or a carbon monoxide detector. One week after the investigation was completed, open fire broke out at the site of one of these thermal anomalies; about 6 weeks after the investigation, a thermal anomaly in another dump was verified when a trench was excavated in the dump.

Not infrequently, in the case of the failure of a metal structure, such as a bridge, tank, airplane, gun carriage, etc., a doubt arises whether the failure was due, among other causes, to the effect of an overburden or of an explosive maliciously or accidentally exploded in contact with it. As few means of discriminating between the effects of these causes have been known and these means were of a rough qualitative character, it was surprising to find in the record of an inquiry into the failure of a structure, the statement that, by observations on the Neumann bands in the structure, it was possible to determine the speed of breakage in the metal and to distinguish between a fracture caused by an explosion and one caused by an ordinary mechanical strain. Such a criterion, if well proved, was of value to the explosives experts of the Bureau of Minea, the Ordnance Department of the United States Army and the Bureau of Ordnance of the United States Navy, but search showed no record of it in the literature nor did any of the metallurgists and metallographers consulted know of any data on which such a criterion could be based having been assembled and critically studied. However, it was universally held that there was promise in the idea and that there exkted unique facilities at the Bureau of Mines Experiment Station at Pittsburgh for the preparation, under definitely known conditions, of material for study by metallographers, and that material of value might also be obtained from the proving grounds of the Army and Navy. Therefore, with the approval of the Director of the Bureau of Minea and the Chiefs of Ordnance of the War and Navy Departments, the Chairman of the Division of Engineering of the National Research Council, on April 12, 1919, appointed a Committee on the Investigation of Neumann Bands, which has since been engaged in this study and which, after some slight change in its personnel, consists now of the following: Dr. William Campbell, Advisory Metallurgist, Bureau of Ordnance, Navy Department.
