Mining of lignite is the largest bulk materials handling activity in Europe. In order to mine this lignite, with an average calorific value of only a third of bituminous coal in an economical way, highly efficient opencast mining technology is mandatory. The total continuous mining of overburden and lignite was introduced more than 60 years ago and was subsequently developed stepwise into the largest mass transport system of the world. In 2011, the Inden Mine, one of three RWE Power mines, stripped 90 Mbcm of overburden to produce 22 Mt of lignite. In total, nearly 100 Mt of Lignite was produced from the three mines of RWE Power in Germany. Beside bucket wheel excavators (BWE), several high-performance in-pit crushing and conveying (IPCC) systems, which allow the adoption of continuous mining systems, even for typical shovel and truck (S&T) operations, are available today. RWE Power assists operators considering a change from the S&T to IPCC technology, both in the planning process involving large-scale belt conveyor systems and later with operational know how transfer. In a number of cases, the challenges associated with this system change have been addressed and solved successfully. One key challenge is managing the development of skills for operating the belt conveyor systems efficiently. This paper compares the effectiveness of S&T to different configurations of continuous mining operation for an up to 170 m deep mine with a total annual output of 117 Mbcm. From the mine operatorÆs point-of-view, the quantity and skill level of staffing required for operation and maintenance are discussed in detail. Durante o processo de desfosforação, as principais fases sólidas formadas na escória são o silicato dicálcico (2CaO.SiO2) e tricálcio (3CaO.SiO2), o fosfato tricálcico (3CaO.P2O5), e o 3CaOSiO2.3CaOP2O5 formado pela oxidação do fósforo em solução sólida com o silicato tricálcio. O objetivo deste trabalho é estudar a formação destes compostos e avaliar a influência das fases sólidas e líquidas formadas na eficiência da desfosforação. Foram analisadas diferentes composições de escórias industriais com diferentes teores de CaO e FeO. As fases presentes na escória e a sua viscosidade foram determinadas pela termodinâmica computacional utilizando o software FactSage (usando os bancos de dados GTOXID e FTOXID) e os resultados destas análises foram relacionados com a eficiência de desfosforação. A eficiência da desfosforação também foi relacionada com os diferentes modelos de relação de partição do fósforo (Lp) disponíveis na literatura.

A utilização de revestimentos com aços inoxidáveis superausteníticos em substituição às ligas a base de níquel na indústria de óleo e gás pode ser uma alternativa interessante, uma vez que é possível a manutenção de bom desempenho e corrosão com um menor custo. O presente trabalha avalia as propriedades mecânicas e microestruturais de revestimentos depositados com a liga AISI 904L sobre o aço carbono ASTM A 516 pelo processo eletroescória, tanto na condição de como soldado quanto após tratamento térmico de alívio de tensões. Após a soldagem, foram realizados ensaios mecânicos e metalográficos para verificar o efeito do ciclo térmico de soldagem nas propriedades do revestimento. O ensaio de dobramento não mostrou indicação de defeitos, sendo considerado aprovado. Os ensaios de microdureza apresentaram valores inferiores a 300HV0.5, em decorrência da microestrutura austenítica com baixo percentual de fases secundárias no metal de solda e de bainita na ZTA. O tratamento térmico de alívio de tensões não provocou mudanças significativas nas propriedades do revestimento

Neutron activation analysis for mineral identification has attracted the attention of numerous investigators, judging from the publications on this subject in the past few years. 1-9 The appealing aspect of this method of mineral analysis is its proven sensitivity in the laboratory. In principle, activation analysis is one of the few petro-physical methods whereby a direct analysis for a mineral itself is possible in a borehole. The successful application of activation analysis requires the use of particular neutron reactions, measurement of selected gamma-ray energy intervals, and optimum bombardment and detection times. For copper analysis, Labanov et al., 10,11 using a low-energy PuBe source, reported an acceptable logging means. On the other hand, Pradzynski12, in analyzing ores and process tailings, used high-energy neutrons and photons for surface measurements of process samples. The work of Labanov et al. was based on measuring the rate of decay of the activated copper and hence was not as definitive as might be desired. Equipment is commercially available to carry out activation studies in the field 13,14 Gamma-ray spectra can be successfully transmitted over ordinary logging cables and, with borehole high-energy neutron accelerators and lower-energy chemical neutron sources, a variety of neutron activation methods can be studied. The purpose of the study discussed in this paper was to determine the feasibility and practicability of logging for copper using neutron activation techniques and commercially available equipment. The laboratory study showed that Cu could be detected in rock samples in the laboratory by high-energy neutron activation of 63 Cu. In the field, however, due in part to the large volume irradiated, the direct detection of copper using high-energy neutrons was not as promising. Detection of copper by measuring both the direct gamma-ray emission and the excessively strong low-energy gamma-ray absorption appears promising. Copper was not detected either in the laboratory or

For a study such as this, which summarizes and amalgamates much information collected, compiled, and utilized by the numerous U.S. Bureau of Mines country specialists and branch chiefs for inclusion in their country and regional reports that comprise the five other volumes of the international studies of the Minerals Yearbook, it is clearly impossible to cite all sources of information used in its presentation, but some recognition seems due. Generally speaking, this study and its related detailed studies on countries and areas would be much more difficult, if not impossible, without the efforts of the personnel of our counterpart agencies throughout the world. Information they collect, compile, and then publish, either in their own volumes or those of central statistical agencies in their countries, are the foundations on which this work rests. Thus, we must begin by expressing our appreciation to the multitude of persons employed by these agencies for their contributions.

Este processo de transferência foi realizado em etapas até a implantação do sistema que registra os principais eventos realizados pelas máquinas operacionais. Estes registros são armazenados em banco de dados e com o uso de ferramentas, podem ser apresentados em relatórios e gráficos. Com isso, a empresa possui um sistema de produção muito confiável, por ter condição de analisar e diagnosticar cada etapa do processo de produção e acompanhar com precisão as falhas e acertos operacionais. Quando há estabilidade no processo e todos os eventos acontecem de acordo com a condição normal de operação, o sistema possibilita um controle aprimorado no consumo de gás e da produtividade. The mode of propagation of explosions through narrow passages is important for understanding flameproofed equipment employed in mines. Narrow channels have been used in this investigation that connected between a small explosion chamber and a large chamber containing fuel-air mixture. The oxygen index of the mixture in the small chamber was determined which caused an explosion in the outer chamber. Preliminary measurements have already been given in Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 5457 and suggested that) flames do not pass through narrow channels. The hot, burned gases from the explosion in the small chamber, however, are able to ignite the mixture in the large chamber by a process of hot-gas ignition. Systematic measurements are reported in the present paper that cover the influence of channel length and diameter and the properties of the gas mixtures in the large chamber on the transmission of explosions. The influence of such properties as quenching diameter and flame temperature is also discussed. This paper concludes the work on this problem and presents a theory that describes in detail parameters that influence transmission of explosions through narrow channels. Os aços com um alto teor de Mn (15-30%) e os elementos de liga, Si e Al, apresentam plasticidade excepcional devido à geração de maclas de deformação (efeito TWIP) ou múltiplas transformações martensíticas (efeito TRIP). Este trabalho avaliou a evolução microestrutural, a formação da textura e sua influência sobre o comportamento mecânico de um aço contendo 17%Mn-0,06%C laminado a frio com reduções de 45% e 90%, e recozimentos a 700°C durante tempos diferentes. A microestrutura foi analisada por microscopia óptica e eletrônica de varredura, EBSD e difração de raios X. A redução um frio favorece a formação da martensita a'. No aço recozido estão presentes as fases martensita a? e e e austenita. O limite de escoamento e de resistência à tração alcançaram 750 e 950 MPa, respectivamente, com o alongamento total de 45%, confirmando sua alta capacidade de encruamento. A reversão da martensita para austenita ocorre simultaneamente com a recristalização desta.

Abstract. The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, as part of its effort to maintain an adequate supply of minerals and metals to meet national economic and strategic needs, is conducting research on the pneumatic recovery of coarse mica. A system of crushers, screens, and zigzag air classifiers is used to concentrate coarse liberated mica particles from mica ore and from the waste tailings of abandoned mica operations. The plus 0.21-millimeter-size mica is effectively recovered by this method. The mica concentrates produced contain over 90 percent mica. The method recovered up to 78 percent of the mica in the samples. As a dry concentration method, the pneumatic-beneficiation technique may be advantageous in areas of limited water resource.

"IT IS NOT necessary here to dwell on the fact that sulphur is currently in short supply. It may be well, however, to •point out that this •storage is not merely a temporary condition, but that, judging by trends in world consumption of sulphur, it may •be anticipated that requirements will double in the next ten years.Even with improved techniques for mining elemental sulphur in the United States and the new finds in Louisiana, there is much concern as to how these future sulphur requirements can be met. It appears necessary to .turn more and more to other sources than elemental sulphur for •additional production. The three major alternative sources were:(1) By-product sulphuric acid •from smelter gases.(2) Sulphur and sulphuric acid from iron sulphides.(3) Sulphur from hydrogen sulphide contained in natural gas. The Jumping Pound sulphur plant of the Shell Oil Company of Canada, Limited, is designed to produce sulphur by the •third of these methods.Jumping Pound is a natural gas field about 20 miles west of Calgary where Shell has a number of producing wells."

A fully-instrumented driving mechanism has been constructed to study the power, aerating and solid suspension characteristics of several laboratory flotation machines. Machines operating over normal flotation speed ranges give constant power numbers in liquid' systems indicating that they operate under fully baffled turbulent flow conditions. Owing to lack of geometrical scaling, power numbers for different sizes of cells of the same make are different. Even larger differences occur between cells of different manufactures. For a given impeller, varying the tank size did not significantly affect the power consumption. Tank geometry and baffling has a slight effect on power consumption with shrouded impellers. For a given impeller speed, suspension height decreases while power increases with increasing mass of solids in suspension. While power consumption is hardly affected by particle size and clearance between the impeller and tank bottom, the suspension height significantly increases as clearance increases and as particle size decreases. Aeration was found to affect not only power but also the suspension characteristics of the machine. For closely sized particles drastic sedimentation occurred when a critical value of the air flow number was exceeded. The critical air flow number decreased with increasing particle size. This effect was less marked with a wide particle size range. The self-aerating capacity of flotation machines increases with cell size at a given speed for the same impeller-shroud system, but decreases in the presence of frother and solids. Equations have been established for correlating all of the studied variables. Data taken from the literature were also correlated with these equations.

The empirical McCracken and Stacey stability and risk assessment method has been in use for more than 20 years to assess geotechnical stability issues for raise bored shafts. The methodology has been applied with various levels of success. Increasingly, trends in mining and civil tunnelling have been towards larger diameter, single pass, raise bored shafts to rapidly provide means of ventilation, material movement (ore passes), or emergency egress. Identifying and assessing potentially problematic zones before raise boring commences can allow for appropriate risk-based decisions on construction, or to investigate alternative solutions. The implementation of a proactive solution to raising through an identified weak zone is preferred to the application of an engineered solution to an area subjected to substantial instability or failure. Methods for investigating potentially problematic areas are discussed in this paper based on AMC’s benchmarking data. Proactive investigation programmes resulting from these investigations are also discussed. Previous publications discussing the benchmarking data have concentrated on Australian case studies. Increased efforts and recent updates have been made to expand the database to include international case studies. This has provided further refinement of lower bound ‘raise bore rock quality index’ (QR) values, and various rock mass parameters for stability assessments. WMC Resources Pty Ltd û Copper Uranium Division operates the large underground Olympic Dam Mine at Roxby Downs, South Australia. These operations mine and process the ore to produce refined copper, uranium oxide, gold and silver. In mid-1996, the company committed to the Olympic Dam Expansion Project (OEP) to expand production from 3.0 million tonnes per annum of ore (85 000 tonnes per annum of copper metal) to over 9.0 million tonnes per annum of ore (over 200 000 tonnes per annum of copper metal). Along with the increase in the ore production capacity of the underground mine and the surface ore handling and processing facilities, expansion of the backfill system was required. The target backfill placement rate was 2.0 million cubic metres of backfill per annum which was to be predominantly delivered as cemented aggregate fill (CAF). This paper discusses the engineering activities undertaken to assess and change the method of designing the required strength of fill exposures. In addition, the operational changes that were introduced to achieve the required fill quantities and the mix designs to meet the specified strengths, including the use of alternate binders, are discussed. This work resulted in a large increase in the fill placement rate and a reduction in the overall unit cost of fill.

Effect of variations in sinter feed composition on sinter strength, bulk density, re-ducibility, chemical composition, and microstructure were determined by sintering experimental samples on a production sintering machine. Increasing amounts of roll scale, ore fines, return fines, and blast furnace slag were most beneficial to feed permeability, sinter bulk density, and strength. Burnt lime additions improved feed permeability but were not beneficial to sinter strength or bulk density. Sinter reducibility was adversely affected by all additives. DEVELOPMENT of methods for evaluating sinter quality, which would in some way predict the behavior of the sinter during charging and smelting in the blast furnace, has been given considerable attention in recent years. In a previous investigation at South Works of the United States Steel Corp., standard sinter sampling and testing procedures were developed.1,2 By modifying the sinter sampling device, a method of sintering experimental mix sinter samples upon a production Dwight-Lloyd sintering machine was also developed. This technique afforded a rapid and controlled method of investigating the effects of the various raw materials and additives on sinter quality and was used in this present investigation. Since the beginning of the present study in 1953, the results of numerous sinter investigations have been published, most of which were concerned with production tests of iron ore sinter, both here and abroad. Three groups of investigators reported results of experimental sinter studies that were related to this investigation. Voice et al.3 studied the effects of controlled variables on sinter quality by producing and testing experimental Northants iron ore sinter using an experimental sintering unit. Mor-rissey and Powers' determined the relationship between iron ore sinter quality and the moisture and coke content using a small laboratory sintering system. Burlingame et al.5 studied the effects of "additives" upon iron ore sinter using a laboratory sintering apparatus and laboratory grade raw materials. At South Works, it was considered desirable to study the effects of sinter mix composition and additives upon the quality of a flue dust-base sinter produced on a production sintering unit. Extrapolation of controlled laboratory test data to sintering plant operation lacking such precise control is not altogether satisfactory. Therefore, the present study was conducted in a manner which approximated production conditions as closely as possible. The raw materials used were those commonly encoun- tered in the production of flue dust and flue dust ore-type sinters and these were varied within extremes encountered in this type of sinter production. Experimental Procedure The experimental sinters were produced from 100 lb mixtures of sinter feed. The principal raw materials and additives used, their particle size, and approximate chemical composition are listed in Table I. The mixing of the raw materials was accomplished by means of a miniature single shaft pug mill shown in Fig, 1. The use of the pug mill as a mixer was decidea upon after encountering difficulty in reproducing the mixing and chopping effect of the sinter plant pug mill with other types of available small mixers. The miniature pug mill was constructed, consisting of 31/2x2x1/4 in, blades spaced 3 in. apart along a 3 ft shaft. Preliminary tests were run with this small mixer to establish the proper rotation speed and the required number of passes through the pug mill to thoroughly mix and distribute all the raw materials in a manner approximating the production Pug mill- Although the effects of varying the mosture content were determined in one particular series of tests, the amount of moisture added was changed as the composition of the experimental mix was varied. The objective of the present study is to evaluate and compile the relevant phase equilibria and thermodynamic data reported in the literature for the ternary system Cu-Fe-S. It is hoped that the results presented here will be useful to practising engineers and scientists in industry who are attempting to improve continually the existing processes of copper extraction and refining. At the same time, the present work will undoubtedly reveal the lack of some basic data which are important for the improvement of our existing extractive processes. Lastly, this work will also show that the development of theoretical models for the alloy phases in the Cu-Fe-S system is essential before complete consistency between the phase equilibria and the thermodynamic data can be achieved.

Ion exchange technologies and processes are proven and established technologies widely used in numerous industries including hydrometallurgy for metal separation and recovery from metal bearing solutions. They have evolved through innovation which includes the development of countercurrent multistage (or multivessel) ion-exchange contactor systems with the benefit, for industrial operations, of greatly reduced footprints and ion-exchange media inventories, as compared to more traditional fixed bed contactor systems. Information on procedures for design and sizing of countercurrent multistage ion-exchange contactor systems is not readily available since it is most often proprietary know-how. The purpose of the present work is to develop a simple and innovative approach for the sizing and modeling of industrial countercurrent multistage ion-exchange contactor systems. The suggested approach builds upon published results and upon the following observation: in an industrial setting, knowledge of how component concentration or load on a contactor output streams vary with time t within a cycle duration (0 < t < T) is generally of little interest, only knowledge of time average of such concentration or load over a cycle duration T is sought for. The presented approach will be tested against current or past performances of industrial countercurrent multistage contactors of Orano Mining operations such as SNK‑3M moving packed bed contactors in Kazakhstan and NIMCIX fluidized bed contactors in Namibia.

PbSO4 is a commonly encountered component of the materials used in lead recycling (e.g. battery paste) and in by-products of metallurgical processes (e.g. residues from zinc hydrometallurgy, dust from copper smelting). Smelting of battery paste results in SO2 emission and in generation of significant amounts of hazardous ‘white slag’. Those adverse phenomena can be eliminated by removal of sulphur from the paste. Lead-bearing by-product materials are of polymetallic character with usually low Pb content, which makes lead recovery technologically difficult and uneconomic. However it can be successfully achieved by extraction of lead sulphate from solid phase with triethylenetetramine (TETA) water solutions. That compound has capability for selective solvation of a whole lead sulphate molecule. Virtually pure lead carbonate can be precipitated by means of saturation of lead-loaded aqueous TETA solution with carbon dioxide, and complete regeneration of the extractant is achieved by fixing of sulphate ion into gypsum through operation of calcium hydroxide suspension. The paper presents results of the lab and pilot scale studies into process of battery paste desulphurisation and recovery of lead from the residue of zinc calcine leaching.

A comprehensive report on extensive experimentation in degasification of the Pittsburgh Coal seam is presented. Detailed accounts of the procedures and results are given for permeability tests, vertical bore hole tests, measurement of gas flow from sealed drainage areas, horizontal rib hole tests, and water infusion tests. The removal of methane gas from coal seams in advance of mining is not a new idea with mining men—much attention has been given to the possibility for many years. In other parts of the world, a principal concern has been in the recovery and utilization of the gas and a number of successful projects have been developed in Europe and elsewhere. In this country, the principal motivation has been related to the safety aspect with some possible side benefits concerning costs and efficiency in mining as secondary objectives. To date, experimental work in this country has been largely or entirely exploratory to determine bed characteristics with respect to the liberation of combustible gases to investigate or establish the possibility of degasification in advance of mining and as an aid in projecting mine ventilation systems to provide for safe, effective and economical handling of combustible gases liberated during mining. With these objectives in mind, the School of Mines and Engineering Experiment Station at West Virginia University, in cooperation with the Christopher Coal Co. of Osage, W. Va., initiated some experimental work in May 1952 and the project has been more or less continuous since that time. The work has been centered entirely in mines of the cooperating company in Monongalia County, W. Va., and Greene County, Pa. LOCATION AND GENERAL CONDITIONS OF THE AREA The principal mining in the area involved is in the Pittsburgh coal seam which lies at the bottom of the Monongahela series of the Pennsylvanian. The Pittsburgh coal in the area is generally uniform in its structure and physical characteristics. The bed thickness averages about 7 to 8 ft and the coal has a characteristic blocky structure as the result of pronounced face cleats and definite, but somewhat less pronounced, butt cleavage. It is a medium volatile coal, averaging about 37 pct, and is marketed principally as a steam fuel and for metallurgical purposes. The Pittsburgh coal outcrops along the Monongahela River and dips gradually, but not uniformly, slightly north of west (about N75°W). The westward extensions of the bed, from the areas contiguous to the Monongahela River which have been heavily mined, constitute the principal reserves and are all well below drainage with the depth of cover increasing with the distance from the river. In general, with deeper cover, it may be expected that methane liberation will be more of a problem in future mining as compared to areas mined previously; therein lies the interest in possible de-gasification in advance of mining. Fig. 1 shows the Pittsburgh coal area in the vicinity of Morgantown in Monongalia County, W. Va., and Greene County, Pa., in which the experimental work discussed is located. Fig. 2 shows the contours on the Pittsburgh coal in the test area. It will be noted that the first two bore holes for the experiments were at the edge of a bench or terrace with considerable change in the gradient in the immediate vicinity of the test holes and that the same general condition applies to later test areas. Mining is intensively mechanized in the area and in the mines involved in the experimental work with corresponding rapid advance of working faces a typical characteristic. Degussa Corporation&apos;s peroxide-assisted leaching (PAL) process was evaluated in the batch concentrate leach circuit at Hecla Mining Company&apos;s Republic Unit. The product leached in this batch circuit is a high grade gold-silver sulfide (predominately pyrite) flotation concentrate. The primary objectives of the test program were to determine the effects of dilute hydrogen peroxide addition on leaching kinetics, sodium cyanide consumption and precious metals recovery. The results of the testing demonstrated that using dilute hydrogen peroxide produced the following benefits: - 1. Batch leach time requirements decreased by 80%. - 2. Sodium cyanide consumption in concentrate leach reduced by 55%, which translated to an overall plant reduction of 20%. - 3. In the concentrate leach process, gold recovery was increased by 1 to 2%. Because of the excellent metallurgical results achieved with the use of dilute hydrogen peroxide, as well as an economic incentive, PAL has become standard practice in the concentrate leach circuit operation. A complete description of the Republic PAL plant evaluation and performance is provided in this paper. In addition, process chemistry considerations in regard to the role of hydrogen peroxide are discussed.

Coal as mined contains varying quantities of inorganic components (mineral matter) which, on combustion, produce the residue known as ash. It has long been realized that the weight of this residue does not equal the weight of the mineral matter originally in the coal, because of the chemical changes that take place during the ashing process. Moreover, the ordinary ash analysis presents the ash as a mixture of oxides with little or no clue to the identity of the mineral species originally present in the coal. It is only for pyritic sulfur that an attempt is made to determine a mineral component. So far as the authors are aware, there are practically no experimental data in the literature as to the percentages of the different mineral species present in coal. The oft-quoted table of Marson and Cobb1 cannot rightly be considered as data, since the authors merely state that the table "shows the probable forms in which these ash constituents exist in coal." In view of the attempts to calculate analyses and determinations of the calorific equivalent of coal to the mineral-matter-free basis, as well as the importance of the mineral species in clinkering, combustion and coking, it seems strange that so few data are available on this phase of coal technology. For example, numerous empirical corrections for use in the scientific classification of coal have been suggested to compensate for the losses from the mineral matter during ignition of the coal to ash. These include multiplication of the ash percentage by various factors such as l 1/10 and 156, the use of the Parr unit coal formula (1.08 A + 22/40 S, where S = total sulfur) as well as certain modifications of the Parr formula that attempt to correct for the organic sulfur present in the coal.
