Thermodynamic and kinetic aspects of nickel and cobalt leaching from metals. minerals and ores in various media have been reviewed and discussed in this paper. A kinetic model developed to delineate the leaching mechanisms for these metals has been discussed in view of experimental observations. The current review also includes the dissolution behavior of nickel and cobalt from various minerals such as oxides, sulrides. ocean floor manganese nodules, and laterites. A particular emphasis has been extended to similarities and differences of the dissolution behavior of these two metals in various media. The leaching of nickel as well as cobalt metal in acidic solutions and arnmoniacal solutions exhibits in most part mass transfer controlling. although at some pH's, chemical controlling or mixed controlling mechanisms seem to prevail. The leaching of nickel and cobalt from oxides in acids and ammoniacal solutions. on the other hand, can be described best by chemical controlling mechanisms.

Slow-settling, fine-grained suspensions can often be dewatered and densified by applying direct current between buried electrodes. Although water removal rates and power expenditures depend on physical and chemical properties of the treated slurries, metal mine tailings from Idaho, Colorado, and Mexico have responded well in laboratory testing, as have 29 samples of ultrafine coal waste from mines in nine states. This Bureau of Mines report reviews field tests at two Idaho metal mines and describes the recent installation at the Henderson molybdenum mine near Empire, Colorado, and the treatment of coal sludge at a Clinchfield Coal Co. preparation plant near Dante, Virginia.

O tubo formador de espiras é uma guia que está localizada no Laying Head, especificado de acordo com a norma ASTM 335P22, e tem por função conformar o fio-máquina na forma de espiras sobre o transportador Stelmor. O Laying Head gira continuamente, durante a operação normal, sendo que a cada revolução do tubo, uma espira é produzida, cujo diâmetro é determinado pelo raio final do tubo e pela velocidade do Laying Head, em relação à velocidade do Laminador. Estes tubos, durante a laminação dos aços BEXX, sofrem um desgaste acentuado, que é provocado pela carepa formada durante a passagem do fio máquina pelas caixas d’água, durante o processo de resfriamento. Desta forma, torna-se necessário trocá-los a cada 200t laminadas do referido aço, com tempo estimado de 30 minutos de parada. Além disso, há um desgaste físico acentuado na atividade de troca dos tubos, que coloca em risco a segurança dos funcionários. Outro efeito indesejável relaciona-se com o risco de ocorrência de sucata de linha, provocada pelo rasgamento do tubo, quando são fornecidos tubos cuja composição química se apresenta no limite inferior de especificação. Há programa de laminação que exige até 6 trocas diárias de tubo. Com a proposta de se incrementar a tonelagem laminada por canal dos discos de laminação do Bloco No Twist, tornou-se necessário desenvolver um tubo com insertos de metal duro, com vistas a aumentar a vida útil dos mesmos, como também a produtividade do Laminador 2.

This paper describes the use of a wavefront reinforcement model which has been developed to supplement established charge mass scaling methods. The model allows for the time taken for blast vibration wavefronts to travel from each blasthole, and has been successfully used to explain the reason for directional increases in both air and ground vibration in certain situations. The model has been used to identify wavefront reinforcement due to the propagation of air vibration and ground vibrations in certain situations. The paper includes a throw (or cast) blasting case history which provides multi-station evidence of the strong directional nature of wavefront reinforcement.

Solid-state electrochemical measurements by three alternative experimental procedures were made with the cell FeO, Fe3O4 |Zro.85Cao.15O1.85 |Cu| Zr0.85CaO.15O1.85 | FeO, Fe304 to establish the solubility and diffusivity of oxygen in solid copper in the temperature range 800" to 1030°C. The solubility of oxygen in solid copper and the diflusivity of oxygen in solid copper Dgu = 1.7 X 10-2 exp(-16,000/RT) Cm2/sec were determined and confirmed in alternative experiments. The enthalpy of solution of oxygen in solid copper equals —10,000 cal per mole; the partial excess entropy of the oxygen atoms in the Cu-O dilute solution is approximately the same as that found for interstitial atoms in other metals. The diffusivity of oxygen in solid copper is consistent with that expected for an interstitial atom. RELIABLE values for the saturation solubility N(s) and diffusivity DO of oxygen in solid copper have not been unambiguously established in the literature. Following three early determinations by others,1"3 Rhines and Mathewson4 reported that the solubility of oxygen in solid copper increased from 0.007 at. pct 0 at 600°C to about 0.015 pct at 1050°C. Phillips and skinner,, using essentiially the same analytical procedure, reported that the solid solubility increases from 0.0018 at. pct 0 at 550°C to about 0.0075 pct at 1050OC. The only previous value for the diffusivity of oxygen in solid copper was reported by Ransley.6 Ransley deoxidized Cu-Cu2O alloys in an atmosphere of carbon monoxide gas to yield a solubility-diffusivity product. He used the solubility data of Rhines and Mathewson to calculate the diffusivity values. Another method for obtaining the solubility-diffusivity product (N(s) DO) is by measuring the widths of internal-oxidation zones in copper alloys as reported by Verfurth and Rapp.7 However, the calculated N(S)Do products depend upon the alloy content of the specimen, so that the internal oxidation of copper alloys does not follow ideal internal oxidation kinetics. As a result, unequivocal values for the N(s) DO product were not obtained by this procedure. A solid-state coulometric titration technique similar to that employed in this work was introduced by C. Wagner8 to study the dependence on silver activity of the Ag/S ratio in silver sulfide in the temperature range of 160" to 300°C. Similar experiments have been carried out by C. Wagner and co-workers9-11 to study the stoichiometry range of silver and copper tellurides, cuprous sulfide, and cuprous selenide. Numerous authors have carried out electrochemical measurements with a solid oxygen-ion-conducting electrolyte to determine the solubility and/or diffusivity of dissolved oxygen in several liquid metals.12-l6 Rickert and Steiner17,18 have used solid-state electrochemical measurements to determine the diffusivity of oxygen in solid silver from 760" to 900°C. Two different cell geometries were used. In the cell of linear geometry Fe, FeO | ZrO2 + (CaO) | Ag + [0 (dissolved)] [1] oxygen diffused from the interior of the silver electrode to the silver/electrolyte interface where the oxygen activity had been lowered from a fixed initial value to practically zero by the application of voltage to the cell. The diffusivity of oxygen in solid silver was determined from the solution of the diffusion equation and the time dependence of the cell current. However, this determination of the diffusion coefficient depended upon a knowledge of the solubility of oxygen in solid silver. A cylindrical geometry was used for the cell Pt, O2(Po2 = 0.21 atm) | ZrO2 + (CaO) | Ag + [0 (dissolved)] [II] which also allowed the diffusivity of oxygen in solid silver to be determined. These values were in agreement with other available data.l9 Recently, Raleigh20,21 used a method involving the measurement of diffusion-limited currents in a cell involving the AgBr solid electrolyte to determine the diffusion coefficient of silver in Ag-Au alloys at 400°C. Diffusivity values on the order of l0-14 sq cm per sec were measured in the alloy composition range 10 to 60 at. pct Ag in a single experiment. From numerous electrical conductivity and galvanic cell measurements,9'22"26 the solid solution Zr0.85 Ca0.15 O1.85 has been established as an electrolyte with predominant oxygen ion conduction over a wide range of intermediate and high oxygen activities. For interrelating the thermodynamics and the kinetics of the dissolution of oxygen in solid copper in this investigation, a galvanic cell was constructed with FeO-Fe3O4 as the reversible reference electrode, the Zr0.85Ca0.15 O1.85 electrolyte, and a pure copper specimen under-saturated in oxygen as the other electrode. An attempt was made to extract niobium oxide from ~98.5% Nb2O5 using solvent extraction processes. Nb2O5 is used as the feed material in carbothermic reduction processes aimed at producing high-homogeneity, super-conductor-grade niobium on a laboratory scale. The Nb metal used for superconductor applications requires a residual resistivity ratio (RRR) > 300, which in turn needs a stringent purity of Nb and allows impurities (substitutional and interstitial) in ppm levels only. In this paper, solvent extraction of niobium was studied under various experimental conditions, such as effect of different extractants, concentration of methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) in the organic phase and concentration of various acids. The concentrate was digested with hydrofluoric acid, with ammonium fluoride (NH4F) as a stripping agent. The extraction of niobium from low hydrofluoric- (HF-) bearing solution was found to be low. Thus, various concentrations of hydrofluoric acid and sulfuric acid, as well as hydrofluoric acid and hydrochloric acid, were investigated towards obtaining a maximum amount of niobium in the filtrate and a minimum amount of niobium in the residue. A McCabe - Thiele plot for extraction of niobium from the aqueous phase, HF-bearing solution using HCl with 85% MIBK in kerosene has been constructed to determine the O:A ratio and the number of stages of the process.

Controlling long overland conveyors with multiple drive stations is a complex problem. The methods for controlling these belts in a steady state are well-covered in existing literature, but a discussion of starting and stopping strategies is absent. This paper outlines different control strategies for starting, stopping and running conveyors with multiple drive stations. To illustrate the benefits of applying the methods described in this paper, the authors show how their adoption corrected many of the control system problems at Essroc Cement’s overland conveyor, which features three drive stations separated from each other by long lengths of continuous conveyor belt.

Volcanic ash, although a little-used Kansas resource, is available in forty counties with estimated, reserves of more than 20 million tons. It was first produced in Kansas in the early 1900?s but not until the early 1920 is did it become an important abrasive material. Total production to date is estimated at 2 million tons, the major use being as an abrasive in scouring compounds and soaps, additional uses include ceramic glazes, an additive in cement, and a filler and stabilizer in hot mix asphalt for paving. Unrecorded tonnages have also been used in construction of black-top (macadam) roads. From 1916 through 1944, Kansas ranked first among the states in volcanic ash production; peak production was about 52, 000 tons in 1923. Since 1945, production has steadily declined, primarily because materials other than volcanic ash are now being used for abrasives; only two producers operated in 1964.

WHILE fulfilling professional engagements, my travels over this portion of the Transvaal have been quite extensive—always on horseback however, so that anything like a thorough investigation of the ground passed over has been necessarily impossible; still, the more minute examination of certain small areas, coupled with general observations, has enabled me to form some idea as to the prominent geological features of the country as a whole. Anything like a complete or comprehensive description is indeed out of the question, as there are no proper maps of the country and the facilities for observation are limited. A large plateau, called the "High Veldt," stretches from east to west across the Transvaal. "The addition of sulphidic materials in the leaching of nickel laterites has several potential benefits that include improvements in the rheological behaviour of the blends, reductions in the sulphuric acid and steam requirements, sweetening of the nickel grade of the combined feed material, and the option of using a range of sulphidic materials. The current study examines the oxidative processing of 30% w/w blends of nickel concentrate and nickel laterite ore at 250oC. In particular, the viability of using low oxygen overpressures was examined for significant amounts of nickel flotation concentrate, up to 12% w/w. Further to this the impact of process water quality, in particular the presence of chloride, upon the kinetics of extraction and the mineralogy of the residue were also investigated. This paper will present the results of preliminary work in this area.INTRODUCTIONThe use of sulphidic ore as a source of sulphuric acid during oxidative hydrometallurgical processing is not a novel idea and can be traced back over forty years (Seidel & Fitzhugh, 1968). A series of patents pertaining to application of this approach for laterite ores can be subsequently found (O’Neill, 1973; Opratko et al., 1974; Rodriguez, 2008a, 2008b; O’Callaghan, 2010; Liu et al., 2011) and a few of articles containing published data (Ferron & Fleming, 2004; Quinn et al., 2009). The use of pyrrhotite tailings as a source of sulphuric acid has also been employed for the leaching of converter slags (Perederiy et al., 2011).It is known that hydrometallurgical operations such as the HPAL plant at Murrin Murrin have added small amounts of sulphides as either transitional (mixed sulphide/oxide) ore or non-smeltable concentrate. This can improve the rheology (Rodriguez, 2009) and provide heat credits. However these plants are generally limited in their ability to add such materials due to their reducing nature and given under highly acidic conditions that the breakdown potential of the titanium used for the autoclave lining is significantly reduced. A suitable oxidant must therefore be present to ensure the potential remains sufficiently high."

The current methodology for delineating and subsequently evaluating coal reserves is based on the use of vertical drill holes and surface based geophysics/geology. These techniques have three major problems, these being respectively:-a) Vertical drill holes can only provide a small sample of the coal seam and stratigraphy. Therefore the planar variation in coal reserve and environment parameters can only be approximated.b) Although surface based geophysics has had its fair share of success in recent years, there are still environments which have masked the finding of major structures.c) Access to drill sites is difficult at some locations due to mountaineous terrain, standing water and environmental impact.

Probabilities of encountering coalbed discontinuities during vertical or horizontal drilling in a specific coalbed can be estimated based on analysis of mined-out areas of the coalbed where the size, shape, orientation, and distribution of discontinuities are known. The result-ant probability estimates can be applied to cost-risk evaluations of drilling programs proposed for exploratory, developmental, or methane drainage purposes in undeveloped areas of that coalbed. Data compiled from mine maps of the Beckley Coalbed in southern West Virginia were used to estimate the probabilities that discontinuities would be encountered in two illustrative hypothetical drilling programs--one for drilling vertical boreholes and the other for drilling horizontal boreholes. Analysis based on a mined-out area of the Beckley Coal bed indicated that vertical methane drainage boreholes spaced 1,000 feet apart in a square grid pattern would each have a 29 percent probability of encountering a discontinuity in a geologically unexplored area of the coalbed. It was also determined that exploratory vertical drilling could locate most of the discontinuities if a borehole spacing of 2,500 feet were used. For horizontal drainage boreholes in the Beckley Coalbed, the analysis indicated a linear relationship between hole length and the probability of encountering a discontinuity.

Na última década, com o crescente aumento da demanda na produção de aço, as usinas siderúrgicas estão, cada vez mais, procurando soluções que tornem seus processos mais ágeis e economicamente competitivos, sem perder qualidade do produto final. O presente trabalho visou a uma avaliação post mortem dos tijolos refratários utilizados em carros torpedo. Esse estudo foi feito através das técnicas de difração de raios-X (DRX) e microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV) associada à espectroscopia de energia dispersiva de raios-X (EDS), com o intuito de se avaliar as modificações estruturais nos materiais em estudo (refratários TCP e TCE). Com base nos resultados obtidos foi possível verificar modificações estruturais mais significativas nos tijolos refratários TCE após o uso com base na incorporação de material associada à escória na sua superfície, o qual contribui para um aumento significativo na sua densidade.

Interparticle breakage is the main crushing mode of an inertia cone crusher according to its working principle and feeding condition. In this paper the breakage behaviour of an inertia cone crusher is investigated, based on energy controlled compression combined with the vibration theory, rather than geometry controlled compression (form conditioned) which plays a major role in conventional eccentric cone crushers. The effect of feeding and operating conditions on breakage behaviour was described quantitatively from the perspective of energy consumption and product size distribution. The influence of feeding conditions, discharge size settings and vibration exciter speeds on the crushing process and product quality has been studied according to the results of laboratory crushing experiments. The results of the experiments show that the particle size of broken products becomes finer with the decrease of a discharge gap within the gap range selected by the experiment. The product size increases significantly when the gap approaches the upper limit of 6 mm. The variation of eccentric speed has a more prominent effect on reducing the product size compared with the change of discharge gap. The change in product size is not apparent when the eccentric speed rises to a certain level. The throughput of an inertia cone crusher is sensitive to the change of discharge gap, which increases linearly with the discharge gap and decreases with the eccentric speed. Um complexo de MoB/CoCr, aplicado por aspersão térmica, vem se destacando na literatura como uma boa opção para revestimento das peças imersas no banho de 55%Al-Zn, prometendo melhora drástica na resistência a corrosão, quando comparado ao revestimento convencional WC-Co. Este promissor revestimento foi aplicado nas extremidades do rolo estabilizador da chapa de aço imerso no banho de 55%Al-Zn da ArcelorMittal Vega em quatro diferentes faixas com variação da espessura de sua camada. O revestimento apresentou danos após 18 dias e 3 períodos de imersão, não sendo economicamente viável para a maioria das linhas de galvanização à quente. Porém, quando comparado com desenvolvimentos similares, pode-se admitir um excelente potencial ao revestimento com MoB/CoCr, sendo necessário a continuidade do desenvolvimento com novas variações da espessura da camada de revestimento aplicada.
