Originally developed for use in coal mines where on-shift blasting with explosives was prohibited, compressed-air blasting has been used for the past 15 years as a substitute for fixed explosives. With the current commercially available compressed-air systems -Airdox and Armstrong -coal is dislodged by a high-pressure discharge of air from a pressurized shell placed in the coal borehole. In the original systems stationary compressors were mounted on the surface or in the underground ventilated areas. These proved so successful that a mobile compressor unit was developed for use at the working face. Because of the possibility that such a unit might operate in a gassy atmosphere, the Bureau of Mines has investigated the hazards associated with operation under conditions where firedamp could accumulate in explosive concentrations. "Standard rock dust for use in the rock dusting of coal mines might be defined tentatively as powdered mineral, light colored and free of carbonaceous matter and free silica, all of which will pass a 20-mesh screen while 50% of it will pass-through a 200-mesh screen.Such dust may be prepared from limestone, gypsum, anhydrite, or shale free of sand and flint. For the initial rock dusting of the average nongaseous bituminous mines enough standard rock dust should be applied so that the combustible content of the resulting mixture of rook dust with mine dust shall not exceed 45%, a range somewhere between 35% end 45% being the practical objective sought.All entries, slopes or passageways and room necks should be rock dusted.Additional safeguards are:a.,Rockdusting roomsb.,Scattering of dust in vicinity of shots before firing.c.,Placing of barriers in the mouths of panels, cross-entries and other key positions.Redusting becomes necessary whenever the combustible content of the mine dust exceeds the permissible maximum. This should be determined by regular, systematic sampling, followed by a simple analysis of the samples for combustible content. A Bureau of Mines volumeter for measuring the density can be used for the determination of combustible content."

IN giving a sketch of the geology and mining of the tin-deposits of Cape Prince of Wales, a short description of the geographic and climatic conditions may be of special interest on account of this being a part of the world of which very little is known, even by the reading public. As shown in Fig. 1, the location of the Cape is lat. N. 65° 35' and long. W. 168°. It is bounded on the north by the Arctic ocean ; on the west by Bering strait and on the south by Bering sea. It is the western-most point of the mainland of North America, and to the west, across the strait, one can see East Cape, Siberia, which consists of a rugged, steep coast of granite cliffs. The climatic conditions are of interest because of the part they have had in the surface geology, and also because they affect mining from an economic standpoint. In connection with the climate and geography, it does not seem out of place here to quote a few lines from the prologue of The Wandering Jew, written by Eugene Sue, under the caption '1 The Land's End of Two Worlds."

DESPITE the fact that a combination of metals-aluminum-zinc-tin, and sometimes aluminum-zinc-cadmium-is extensively used for aluminum solders, as well as for die-castings, the constitution of these alloys has not yet been made clear. I. BINARY SYSTEMS The system aluminum-zinc is the basis of the ternary alloys under consideration. Their composition was made sufficiently clear by the investigations of Rosenhain and Archbutt,1 Bauer and Vogel,2 Sander and Meissner,3 Hanson and Gayler4 and Isihara.5 Only the temperature of decomposition of the crystals 0 seems still to be doubtful, whether it is considered as a compound of Al2Zn3 (according to Bauer and Vogel) or as an intermediate phase of variant composition (according to Hanson and Gayler). This temperature is given by most of the authors as in the neighborhood of 256° C., only Isihara giving 280° C. As its accurate determination is of special importance in the study of the ternary alloys under consideration it was experimentally controlled in the following manner: An alloy corresponding in composition to the formula Al2Zn3 was made, in which the temperature effect was found to be the greatest. This was drilled and a silver-constantan thermoelement inserted into the cavity so as to be in direct contact with the alloy. The whole was then very slowly heated and the heating and cooling curves determined. The transition temperature from the heating curve was found to be 281° C., whereas from the cooling curve it was 252° C.

The Government of the United States annually expends approximately $8,000,000 for coal. Prior to 1906, this coal was purchased mainly on its reputation, or trade name, rather than under contracts specifying the heating value of the coal, its contents of ash and moisture, and other characteristics. In recent years the Government and other large consumers have appreciated more and more the desirability of definitely determining by chemical analyses and tests the character and quality of coal deliveries. Studies of engineroom and boiler-room efficiencies and economies point forcibly to the necessity of devoting more thought to the improvement of the boiler-room end. This calls for an intimate knowledge of the character and quality of the fuel used. The analyses and tests of delivered coal furnish such data, whereby the power-plant results can be comprehensively studied and a continuous check maintained on the coal and on the conditions of plant operation. Under authority of acts of Congress making appropriations for analyzing and testing fuels belonging to or for the use of the United States Government, a laboratory is maintained at the headquarters of the Bureau of Mines, 'Washington, D. C., where samples representing deliveries of coal purchased for Government use are analyzed and tested. The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal by the Government under specifications,a that is, by contracts that make definite requirements regarding the heating value of the coal expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analysis. Under many of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal offered, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled and analyzed to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor, and if it is not, the price to be paid is decreased in proportion; but if the coal is of higher quality, the price is proportionately increased. The analyses of coals or the guaranties offered by the bidders may in some cases be used for determining the award of a contract, but if the coals offered are of widely different characteristics, it may be difficult to determine which would prove the cheapest fuel, without having their relative evaporative efficiencies. Hence, it may be necessary to conduct evaporative tests under service conditions in order to determine which coal is particularly adapted for successful and economical use in the plant. But once a particular coal is selected, regardless of the procedure of determining the award of a contract, then the greatest advantage of the specification method is realized, in that it guarantees to the purchaser coal of uniform character and quality, thereby insuring the best results in the plant. The cost of purchases, under such specifications, of fueL for the use of the Government now aggregates approximately $4,100,000 per annum, and the cost of additional fuel for which samples are taken and submitted to the Bureau of Mines for analysis in order to determine the character and quality of the coal furnished aggregates some $3,000,000 per annum more. In fact, information is now obtained regarding the quality of fuel purchased on almost all contracts large enough to warrant sampling and analysis and heatingvalue tests. It may be said that the purchase of coal under specification is still in the stage of evolution and development, and that experience and time will be required to develop fully standard specifications and methods of sampling and analysis that may be used universally. The success of the specification method for the purchase of coal and the reliability of analysis now rests almost entirely on sampling.a Improper sampling leads to controversies, with resulting condemnation of the specification method in general and the value of laboratory analyses and tests in particular. A number of bulletins b have been published showing the results of the purchase of coal by the Government under specifications. This bulletin is a compilation of the results of coal analyses by the Government, including those made in the fiscal years 1908-1910, which have been previously published, and later analyses representing coals analyzed during the fiscal years 1911-1915. The preceding bulletins gave individual analyses or average monthly analyses, whereas this bulletin gives the average analyses only for the entire contract. It is hoped that this compilation of a series of comparable analyses of the coals purchased by the Government will be of value alike to coal dealers, to Government engineers, to purchasing agents, and to all users of coal.

A vertical air shaft in the Birmingham, Ala., iron district was sunk with a circular cross section and lined with concrete at a relatively low cost to provide needed ventilation for an iron-ore mine. The method of sinking the shaft is described, and the costs are stated in mar-hours with a descriptive list of equipment and a statement on the size and use of temporary buildings. Preparation began May 2, 1955, and the shaft was completed at a depth of [680] feet by September 22, 1956. By October 1956, all temporary building and [aft]-sinking equipment had been removed. The total direct-labor cost for the operation, including preparation and dismantling, was 50,700 man-hours, or 30.2 man-hours per foot. Total rock and dirt removed amounted to 17,523 cubic yards (in place), and the shaft lining required 4,635 cubic yards of concrete to form a circular air shaft with an inside diameter of 16 feet.

The yielding-rock-bolt concept, as developed in South Africa, consists of a smooth-bore die or collar fitted to a standard rock bolt. Laboratory testing at the Bureau of Mines Spokane Mining Research Center under slow and fast strain rates showed that extrusion loads can be controlled by varying the configuration of the die bore and that theoretical analysis (using basically Sachs' theory of wire drawing) predicts extrusion loads of the different die-bore configurations. A derived equation, based on this research, can be used for designed die-thread combinations for any desired extrusion load. Dynamic loading resulted in slightly higher loads (15 percent) than static loading. The strain hardening effect, which increases yield and ultimate strength, was partly offset by adiabatic heating of the threads, which decreases strength.

The Fischer-Tropsch synthesis is practicable in a reactor where the exothermic heat of reaction is removed by circulating large quantities of recycle gas through a catalyst bed of high-voids content. At an hourly space velocity of 1100, the feed gas, a mixture of 1.5 parts hydrogen to 1 of carbon monoxide, was converted 90 percent, producing hydrocarbons predominantly in the gasoline range. At these conditions a recycle-to-fresh gas ratio of 40:1 was enough to give excellent temperature control with a pressure drop of 1.5 p.s.i. per foot of bed using a steel catalyst in the form of lathe turnings. Steel parallel plates, although offering lower resistance to gasflow, were less reactive and less durable. INTRODUCTION The Federal Bureau of Mines has been engaged in a research and development program since 1944 on the synthesis of gasoline from coal. Gasification of coal with steam and oxygen to yield a synthesis gas--a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen--is being investigated at Morgantown, W. Va.; and the synthesis of gasoline by catalytically reacting the carbon monoxide and hydrogen over iron by the Fischer-Tropsch reaction is being investigated at Bruceton, Pa.

It is widely accepted that particles stabilize flotation froths and that stable froths result in improved flotation performance. Predicting the effect of particle addition on froth stability is, however, challenging. Furthermore, there is currently no technique that allows the prediction of the effect of different flotation reagents on froth stability, without carrying out froth stability experiments.

The authors were engaged to optimise a traditional rebar cage reinforced concrete segmental lining by means of finite element analysis (FEA) using macro synthetic fibres for the Shanghai metro extension. The aim of this study was to reduce or entirely replace the original steel reinforcement of the segmental lining, in order to make the precast production process faster and more economic. The outer diameter of the tunnel was 6200 mm, the thickness of the segments was 350 mm.The numerical calculations were performed by Atena Finite Element software, which is based on the combination of Menétrey-William and Rankine failure surfaces on the compression and tension sides respectively. The effect of the macro synthetic fibres was modelled as tension stiffening on the tension surface.A one-to-one full scale model of an assembled tunnel ring using the original reinforcement cages was tested at Tongji University in Shanghai, July 2013. The ring was tested to differing load levels where load and displacement were measured until failure. The author’s first step was to calculate the real displacement characteristics of the original reinforced concrete (RC) ring, then calculate the numerically modelled version, so as to compare them. The material parameters of the concrete and rebar used had been determined through basic material tests conducted at the Tongji University. (Bi, Liu and Wang, in press).The numerical modelling undertaken has shown good correlation with the full-scale physical test results. Optimisation of the lining reinforcement was achieved through the addition of fibres, resulting in a substantial reduction of the steel rebar cages. "The smelting reduction of V-Ti bearing beach placer by combined rotary hearth furnace and direct current arc furnace was studied in laboratory. It takes the aid of back propagation (BP) neural network theory to build the nonlinear mapping relations between the crucial process variables such as content of carbon, temperature and time and the degree of reduction. Then by the integrating BP neural network and genetic algorithm (GA), the optimized process parameters for the high degree of reduction were searched. The comparisons between experiment results and neural network simulation results show that GA-based on BP method can predict the degree of reduction with higher prediction accuracy. Calculations show that the integrated energy consumption of new technology is 580kgce/tHM, less than the current existing blast furnace.IntroductionThese V-Ti bearing beach placers (VTBBP) are secondary Fe-rich minerals formed by rivers, ocean waves, ocean tides and ocean currents on beach zones, their useful minerals are V-Ti magnetite ores. On Asia Pacific zone, such as Japan, China, Philippines, Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand, the VTBBP have large reserves and wide distribution. But so far, the VTBBP are not still comprehensively utilized. Therefore, in this paper, a combined rotary hearth furnace technology and arc furnace smelting method is studied for comprehensive utilization of the VTBBP. The main objective of this paper is to find optimum operation conditions for the production ofV-bearing iron and titania-rich slag from the VTBBP by means of the laboratory testing.Recently, neural network (NN) expected to be able to provide an effective tool because of its advantages, which describe nonlinear mapping relations. With the characteristics of strong selflearning, self-organization, robust error toleration and accurate nonlinear relation approximation, artificial neural network can be applied to nonlinear process modeling based on sufficient training. Back-propagation (BP) training algorithm is probably the frequently used one in practical application. Genetic algorithm has parallel search strategy and global optimization characteristics, which makes the trained neural network being higher classification accuracy and faster convergence speed. So it is necessary to combine neural network and genetic algorithm. The nonlinear relationship between input and output presented by NN and the global optimal function of GA are abroad applied in the engineering and scientific research [1, 2]. So these methods supply an efficient path to solve the above problems. At present, it is common to study the optimization of process parameters by orthogonal experimental design, the method combining neural network and genetic algorithm is a novel and better method than orthogonal experimental design. Tills study organized the above advantages to optimize the process parameters for comprehensive utilization of the VTBBP."

"Excessive wear rates on railway wheels can result in rolling-stock derailments. If wear is detected early the possible derailments can be prevented by prematurely replacing wheelsets, although the inventory cost and maintenance downtime remain a challenge. In the current study, wheels were introduced and monitored in-service for two years to investigate the cause of excessive wear rates. The wear rates and stresses were calculated for the wheels suitable for a maximum load of 26 t per axle. Microstructural and mechanical properties were analysed. As expected, the general microstructure of all the wheels tested was pearlitic. Although all the wheels complied with the tensile strength requirements, stress calculations confirmed material distortion on excessively worn wheels whereas trial wheels revealed yield strength exceeding the yield criterion. High wear rates observed on the wheels were a result of low yield strength relative to the load per axle. The typical wear mechanism found was due to a combination of rolling contact fatigue and abrasive brake wear. Despite compliance of the wheels with existing requirements regarding material and mechanical properties (hardness, ultimate tensile strength), it is recommended that the yield strength must also be taken into consideration as a critical parameter.IntroductionRailway wheels are used to support the wagon mass and guide the wagon along the tracks (Park, 1974). The wheels and rails must be able to tolerate the applied tangential forces in order to effect wagon dynamic performance and reduce material deformation (Ghidini et al., 1994; RSE_TE_SPC_0045, 2011; AAR M107/M 208 Specification, 2011. Over the past ten years, the South African coal wagon maintenance depot has experienced excessive hollow wheel wear rates on the heavy haul line wheels. The maximum load of Jumbo wagons on the coal line is 104 t, or 26 t per axle. Although the maintenance intervention cycle for wheelsets was two years, between February 2011 and August 2012 some wheels experienced excessive hollow wear. Hollow wear is regarded as wear exceeding 2 mm on the central portion of the wheel tread (RSE_TE_SPC_0045, 2011). This happened despite the fact that these wheels were manufactured and certified according to the requirements of AAR M107/208 standard for carbon steel wheels (AAR M107/M 208 Specification,. 2011) and the local wheel RS/ME/SP 021 standard specification (RS / ME / SP / 021 REV 5 (2013). The AAR standard only specifies a minimum hardness as a required mechanical property and the local standard specifies hardness and minimum tensile strength only. In general, an increase in hardness will improve the rolling/sliding wear resistance of steel. This relationship of hardness and wear resistance was found to be true only in a situation where solid and similar alloys are in contact (Singh, Khatirkar and Sapate, 2015). The sliding wear resistance of a material is usually estimated using Archard’s equation (Liu and Li, 2001)."

As an alternative to heavy water cooling, reactors cooled by organic liquids are being actively developed in Canada under the sponsorship of Atomic Energy of Canada Limited. One of the areas in which development has been required is that of core materials. The factors affecting the selection of fuel canning and coolant tube materials are discussed. It is shown that S.A.P. is a potentially attractive material for these applications. The fabrication of fuel sheathing is discussed. Difficulties met due to large inclusions and blistering due to high hydrogen contents have been overcome by magnetic separation and vacuum sintering of the powders. High-quality tubes can now be produced by extrusion to finished size. A study has been made of the mechanical properties of fuel-sheathing tubes and bar stock. The stress rupture properties of the tubes subjected to uniaxial and biaxial stress have been determined. The biaxial stress tests were performed by internal pressurization. A demanda por materiais ecológicos vem crescendo exponencialmente nos últimos anos. O potencial destes produtos é dado tanto pela versatilidade em seu uso quanto pela sua disponibilidade na natureza. Um dos materiais em expansão é o OSB (Oriented Strand Board), utilizado na vedação do Steel Frame. O trabalho tem como objetivo substituir em três porcentagens 15%, 30%, 45% das tiras de madeira do OSB convencional pela fibra do epicarpo do coco de babaçu (FECB), a fim de melhorar a resistência mecânica. Os resultados obtidos na chapa de 11 mm incorporada com FECB apresentaram resistência a tração entre 15 e 26 MPa e de flexão entre 42 e 75 MPa, tornando assim superiores ao produto encontrado no mercado.

Lynn lake, Manitoha, where Sherritt has operated a copper-nickel mine since 1954, is located north of the 56th parallel approximately SOO miles north of Winnipeg. Sherritt's new, 3,000 tpd, copper-zinc Fox Mine is situated 30 miles southwest of Lynn lake. This paper focuses on the Fox Mine concentrator, hut first some background information. Sherritt Gordon Mines Limited started mining operations as a copper-zinc producer in 1931 at Sherridon, Manitoba, 150 miles south of Lynn Lake. As Sherridon fizzled out development of a series of nickel-copper orebodies commenced at Lynn Lake. The Forward process was developed to treat the nickel concentrate from the Lynn concentrator. Sherritt's ammonia leaching process is now history and is expected to gain more prominence as pressure is applied to the mining industry for closer environmental control. But few are aware of the fact that the present Lynn Lake crushing plant and concentrator were dismantled in the autumn of 1951 and freighted from Sherridon by tractor train during the winters of 1952 and 1953. The copper-zinc orehody at Fox Mine was discovered early in 1961 by geophysical methods which included both airborne and ground surveys. It is part of a ,large body of massive and semi-massive sulphides consisting chiefly of pyrite; with chalcopyrite, sphalerite (containing 7-9% iron) and pyrrhotite in varying proportions which occur within a series of volcanic and sedimentary rocks. The total mineralized zone is a lenticular body with a minimum average length and width of 1,350 feet and 66 feet respectively, to the explored depth of 2,000 feet. The average sulphide content is 67%. Higher zinc zones are masses of pyrite grains cemented by sphalerite with lower than average copper content. Zones higher in copper and lower in zinc are slightly more quartzose. Gold and silver are present in small amounts roughly proportional to the copper content.

"INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARYDuring the latter part of 1943 a magnetometric survey was conducted by the Geophysical Division of the Bureau of Mines at the mine, Putnam County, N. Y., in an endeavor to locate a segment of the body that reports state was cut off by a fault. The Mahepac mine was abandoned about 1895 after producing nearly 1,000,000 tons of high-grade magetite iron ore. The results of the investigation indicate the termination of the ore body by ""pinching"" or a displacement of such magnitude as to place any extension at a considerable distance the original ore body. This report describes the work done on the project and presents the data obtained. ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThe Bureau of Mines has been investigating deposits of critical and essential minerals in the United States and Alaska since 1939. The Mahopac mine was visited by W.T. "Cu/Ni multilayers exhibiting giant magnetoresistance were deposited from a single electrolyte under stepped potentiostatic control. To enable transport measurements to be made without remounting the multilayer film, we developed a novel method that involved plating on a thin metallic basal layer atop a rigid non-conducting Si substrate. Rotating ring-disk electrode techniques were used to monitor the composition and thickness of individual plated layers. Transmission electron microscopy confirmed that the interfaces between adjacent layers were sharp and that the structure of the layers was uniform throughout the film. Atomic force microscopy images indicated that the film's surface was smooth and free of defects.ELECTRODEPOSITION OF THIN MULTILAYER MAGNETIC MATERIALSI. IntroductionElectrodeposition of compositionally modulated films will in all likelihood continue to be used to produce the read heads for stored magnetic data. However, the next generation of head materials will require both improved sensitivity and reduced film thickness. Certain multi layers consisting of thin alternating ferromagnetic and nonmagnetic layers exhibit giant magneto resistance and consequently are promising candidates for read head applications. We have successfully made multilayer films with giant magnetoresistance that have total thicknesses as low as 25 nm, approximately 120 times thinner than the thinnest similar films reported in the literature. This paper describes early results from our work on electrodeposition and characterization of Cu/Ni multilayers, a model system with enhanced magnetic and mechanical properties, including the GMR effect. The structure and composition of the multilayers were determined using TEM, AFM, and electrochemical methods, and their magnetoresistance was measured by the standard four-probe technique. A novel method developed in this work enabled the transport properties of the ultrathin films to be measured reliably without the need to dissolve the cathode or handle the films. A U.S. Bureau of Mines interactive FORTRAN computer program can screen explosion-proof enclosures intended for underground service. The program incorporates important information and criteria to assist enclosure manufacturers and Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) personnel by providing a first-order approximation of rectangular explosion-proof enclosure characteristics prior to actual certification testing. The program uses information and data that can be retrieved automatically during program execution. The program also performs the calculations for a series solution algorithm and various equations to evaluate the enclosure for both a static internal pressure and an internal explosion. The program writes the intermediate and final calculations and information concerning the status of the screening process to a summary file on a floppy disk. One data base contains MSHA certification requirements given in the Code of Federal Regulations (30 CFR 18). A second data base contains material properties of acceptable construction materials and weld joint efficiencies. A series algorithm determines bolt and cover stresses for a simply supported rectangular cover with arbitrary bolt locations. Limit and yield line analysis is used to calculate the strength of body panels.
