A heavy mineral deposit about 1.6 km (1 mile) in length, 0.13 km (0.08 mile) in width and averaging about 3 m (10 ft) in thickness is exposed approximately 130 km (80 miles) east of Denver, along Interstate 70, in Elbert county, CO near the town of Limon. The deposit is exposed in a geomorphic feature known locally as Titanium ridge. The dominant heavy minerals, accounting for about 70% of the total heavy-mineral suite by weight, are ilmenite, garnet and zircon. The mineralized zone appears in a series of visually interpretable facies that are stacked vertically and represent subtidal, forebeach, backbeach, washover fan and aeolian depositional environments. These paleoenvironments are analogous to depositional environments represented by a modern heavy-mineral bearing facies tract on St. Catherines Island, Ga. Thus, Titanium ridge provides evidence that heavy-mineral accumulation models for late cenozoic deposits in the Georgia and Florida coastal plains are applicable to heavy-mineral deposits of the Western Interior subsurface and, by implication, the Western Interior Seaway, extending from Mexico to the Canadian Arctic.

"Finance Minister Paul Martin's second budget might be good for Canada's mining industry in the long run, but the budget raises a number of concerns for the industry in the near term. The budget papers suggest that the 25% resource allowance is not working as intended, and report that the Department of Finance will be reviewing this valuable allowance. The so-called ""large corporations tax"" rate will be increased. This annual tax, which is imposed on a corporation's capital even when the corporation is not in production, is particularly harmful to the mining sector.IntroductionThe Honourable Paul Martin, in his second federal budget, emphasized spending cuts and made only modest tax changes. Mining is nothing but an art - besides being a science - of extracting valuable minerals from the womb of the mother earth. In this gigantic task, a large number of machinery and equipment are employed judiciously. Wire ropes play a vital role in lifting or hoisting men and materials under hostile/adverse working conditions and constitute a major item of investment on machinery/equipment. The economy of using a wire rope is a concern for engineers, users and the planners. The economic use of wire ropes for mining purposes largely depends on the following factors;Mechanical design considerations - which include tensile strength of wires, elasticity, resistance to abrasion and crushing, fatigue values, static and dynamic loads on wire ropes, factor of safety, fleet angle, etc. Metallurgical consideration - Composition and heat treatment of wire materials, defects like inclusions and voids, surface quality factor, lubrications, micro structural parameters. Operational consideration - Seizing and cutting of rope, storage, care and maintenance, cutting back, etc. Environmental consideration - Temperature and humidity, pit condition, dust, corrosive atmosphere, etc. In the present paper, an attempt will be made to suggest steps for achieving optimum economy while using the wire ropes for extraction of precious minerals and coal keeping in view the points noted earlier. Once technical viability is established, economy is the ultimate consideration for an industry for safe hoisting of men and material.

In a previous paper1 from this laboratory, the development of a lead grid method for exploring the distribution of strain and density within metal powder compacts was described. In that work thin lead foil with rectangular holes cut at regular intervals was inserted with the powder fill, the arrangement pressed and then radiographed to permit measurement of the deformation of the lead grid. Densities at each grid element obtained in this manner were plotted as a function of the die dimensions. From such plots it was found that the densest part of a compact pressed from one side (the top) is at the top outer region and the least dense at the bottom outer region of the specimen. The axial density maximum occurs more often nearer the bottom than at the top. As a result of such exploratory measurements, it appeared reasonable to conclude that variations in density could be attributed in the main to die wall friction. Thus compacts of large diameter appeared relatively uniform in density except where the die fill had been uneven. Finally it was found that lubrication of the finely finished die cavity contributed more to magnitude and uniformity of density within the compact than interparticle lubrication. Since publication of the above results, it was found that circular-hole grids could be more accurately made and, when deformed within the powder, more readily measured and analyzed. Much of the former work was repeated and new results which include the effect of lubrication, compact height, pressure, speed of pressing and vacuum pressing are reported in the present paper. Circular-hole Grids and Analyses OF Radiographs Commercial lead sheet 0.008 in. in thickness was used in all the work reported. The 0.0938-in. diam holes were punched in the sheet on 1/8-in. centers to an accuracy of 0.001 in. The finished grid used contained eight or more holes in a row and from I to 24 rows. The lead sheet was clamped between two pairs of brass strips bolted to a small milling machine table which was itself bolted to a bench in correct position near a vise which held the punch. Travel of the lead grid in two dimensions was controlled by two steel lead screws calibrated in 0.001-in. divisions. A stripper plate was used on the punch to avoid distortion of the lead foil. A high carbon-high chromium (chrocar) one-piece steel die was used throughout the work. The die cavity was 1.125 in. in diam and the clearance between plungers and die wall was 0.001 in. The die was also used for pressing from both ends with two long plungers. Finally, lapping of die and plungers gave a surface whose rms value On an Abbot profilometer was 5 micro-in. The die walls and plungers were, except where otherwise noted, lubricated with a stearic acid suspension in benzene. This was put on in multiple layers and allowed to dry before filling the die.

Understanding the behaviour of plasma arcs is an important part of the design and operation of direct current electric arc furnace smelting processes, which are used in the industrial production of many metallurgical commodities. In recent years numerical and computational modelling techniques have begun to illuminate the complexity of arc behaviour and how it is deeply connected to the thermodynamic and physical properties of the arc plasma. Plasma properties may be estimated from first principles using statistical mechanics methods, but this requires as input some knowledge of the composition of the gas phase that occurs over the process during smelting. In this paper the authors describe a workflow using thermochemistry software to predict the expected gas phase composition through a given process, followed by plasma property calculations using an open-source software tool that has been in development for several years. This tool, 'minplascalc' has been in development for several years and is also described in detail here. The workflow is then applied to the calculation of plasma properties of interest for a variety of historical and current pyrometallurgical processes, and the results are compared. The plasma property data are published in an open-access database for general use.

This report is one of a series describing investigations within the Missouri River Basin in Montana made by mining engineers of the Bureau of Mines Minerals Division, Region II. The primary purpose of these investigations is to provide information to agencies of the Department of the Interior and and others concerned with the planning of Federal power developments in the basin. The report contains such factual data as have been authorized for public distribution. The field investigations in Broadwater County were made during the late fall of 1948 and the summer of 1949. Virtually all known metallic mineral deposits and some nonmetallic mineral deposits within the county were investigated. However, some long inactive mines and prospects on which little or no information is of record may have been omitted inadvertently. Many of the mines and prospects have been inactive for extended periods. Most of the underground workings now are inaccessible. Because of such conditions, impressions gained by the inspection of surface features have been supplemented necessarily, where possible, by information obtained from Federal and State publications.

The Aroostook manganese-bearing deposits lie within a rectangle 30 miles wide and 70 miles long. Over 40 different deposits have been discovered in this area, but they have not been mined because the ores are difficult to treat. In 1949, the Maple Mountain area was selected for detailed investigation by the Bureau of Mines, because study by the State of Maine and the Federal Geological Survey indicated that it was the most promising in Aroostook County for developing a large tonnage of reserves. Investigation by the Bureau of Mines disclosed that all of the reported deposits of the central district were located on the limbs of a syncline underlying a pear-shaped area of 283 acres between the crests of Maple Mountain and Hovey Mountain. The ore area has been outlined by trenching and drilling along three sides of the perimeter, while the remaining side is defined by a fault. The area has a length of 6,300 feet and a maximum width of 3,100 feet. Diamond-drill holes have intersected the deposit as deep as 1,550 feet below surface, but additional deep drilling would be required to determine the intensity of folding or warping at depth. The Maple Mountain-Hovey Mountain deposit lies in the slates of Ordovician age and is classified into three zones, of which the upper, averaging about 57 feet thick, is designated manganiferous purple and red slate. The central zone, also averaging about 57 feet thick and containing the highest manganese content, is manganiferous, banded hematite. The lower zone is manganiferous, interbedded hematitic and green slate with an average width of about 33 feet. Manganese minerals occur with hematite in all three units. Trenching on the northwestern slope of Hovey Mountain uncovered other disconnected deposits of manganiferous rocks of earlier age than the ore of the syncline. The general strike of these deposits, which range from 15 feet to 75 feet in thickness, is southwest a length of 5,000 feet. They dip steeply southeast. The ore of the syncline is predominantly deep, hematitic red, inclining to red-dish black, fine-grained, dense, and thinly laminated. It is hard and siliceous. Hematite has, in places, been altered to magnetite. Because of the fine-grained texture of the ore, the manganese-mineral constituents are difficult to determine. Of the manganese silicates present, braunite is the most readily identified. Manganese carbonates and oxides are found also.

Underground mining operations tend to have higher operating costs than surface mines. When metal prices decrease, profitability is jeopardized due to the high costs. Therefore, mining management harnesses new practices that increase operational efficiency. One way to manage this challenge is to invest in new mine planning practices. Stope layout optimization as a part of underground mine planning aims to identify a portion of the orebody in the form of production volumes (stopes) to maximize profit under roadway and stope dimension constraints. In this paper we propose a novel approach based on identifying ore-rich areas of the deposit and prioritizing their extraction through an iterative heuristic clustering approach. The proposed approach is compared with and validated by an exact method through a small mining example. The heuristics produced nearly identical results in a very short time. Finally, a case study was carried out using a larger data-set. The cluster-based iterative approach generated nearoptimal stope layouts in a computationally effective manner.

(Pittsburg Meeting, March, 1910.) AT the Pittsburg meeting of the Institute, May, 1879, I made the first announcement in America of the results obtained by Sidney Gilchrist Thomas and Percy C. Gilchrist, ill their efforts to eliminate phosphorus in the manufacture of steel in the Bessemer converter and the open-hearth furnace.1 The first published statement in an American newspaper was a reprint of the first Thomas-Gilchrist paper, 2 which I sent to J. C. Bayles, at that time the editor. At the suggestion of many friends who were present at the Pittsburg meeting, and others who are cognizant of the beginnings of the process in the United States, and for the information of the younger generation of the iron and steel fraternity, I have thought it eminently proper that the history of the process in detail should be given where I made the first announcement and where the process has had its largest development. During my residence in England, from April, 1873, to February, 1879, and as a member of the Iron and Steel Institute since 1874, I was present at many of its meetings during those years. At nearly -every meeting the burden of discussion was the question of the use of pig-iron containing phosphorus in the. manufacture of steel by the Bessemer or the open-hearth process. The relationship between coal characterization and physical cleaning has not been well understood due to the complex nature of coal. Therefore, it is difficult to apply the results of coal characterization to predict and evaluate the performance of a physical separation (e.g. flotation). Eight U.S. bituminous coals were analyzed and studied petrographically in conjunction with washability and flotation tests. The results show that grindability correlates to ash and fixed carbon contents; liberation determined directly by petrographic techniques is close to liberation determined indirectly by washability; and an ideal separation efficiency can be determined by measuring the inertinite content and the washability separation efficiency using a heavy liquid with a density of 1.4. The ideal separation efficiency was attained for most coals by packed column flotation. The ideal separation efficiency can be used for comparing process technologies and process parameters.

Much has been written and said concerning tables of permissible or maximum allowable concentrations of various toxic substances in air, but not enough attention has been given to their limitations and how to use them intelligently . There is a tendency to place too much reliance on figures , with little or no consideration of their real meaning . The repeated publication of a figure often adds significance to it far beyond that intended by the original author or publisher . How are these figures referred to as "maximum allowable concentrations " established? What is their real meaning? To answer these questions it is necessary first to define maximum allowable concentration . The usual definition is somewhat as follows : "The average concentration to which an industrial worker can be exposed for 8- hours daily for an indefinite period without injury or occupational disease . This definition is made up of the following items : ( 1 ) Average concentration, ( 2 ) 8 - hour day , ( 3 ) indefinite exposure period , and ( 4 ) lack of injury or occupational disease . There is some controversy regarding item ( 1 ) , items ( 2 ) and ( 3 ) are usually though not invariably accepted , and there is definite disagreement regarding the interpretation of item ( 4 ) . . To reach a more satisfactory interpretation of maximum allowable concentration , attention is directed to ( 1 ) the development of tables of maximum allowable concentrations , ( 2 ) criteria on which limits are based , and (3 ) methods used to obtain data on which limits are based .

A utilização de ligas Al-Si tem se expandido industrialmente principalmente no setor automobilístico. Cabeçotes, blocos de motor, rodas entre outros são exemplos de componentes produzidos com essas ligas. Estes componentes normalmente estão sujeitos a carregamento cíclico. O objetivo desse trabalho foi estudar o comportamento da liga A356 utilizando corpos de provas submetidos à fadiga por flexão rotativa nas condições brutas de fundição e tratadas termicamente por T6. Corpos de prova para ensaios de tração e de fadiga foram obtidos por fundição por gravidade em coquilhas. A comparação dos resultados foi realizada com os resultados do limite de resistência, do limite de escoamento, do alongamento e das curvas S-N. Adicionalmente análises fractográficas foram realizadas para verificar o comportamento de fratura. A liga tratada termicamente apresentou melhores resultados no ensaio de tração e de fadiga na faixa de 103<N<107.

"The agglomerating index of coal is an index based upon the nature of the coke residue left when the standard volatile-matter determination of the well-known proximate analysis is made. In this determination a small amount of coal is heated in a container to about 950° C. (1,742° F.), at which temperature the volatile matter is driven off, leaving a coke formation. The coke residues for various coals are quite different in physical structure: and, for some time past, work has been done on studies of the nature of these residues in connection with the coking of coal. In 1934 Gilmore, Connell, and Nicolls proposed use of the agglomerating index for indicating the dividing line between noncaking coals and those having weakly caking properties. 4/ Its use was adopted in the standard classification of coals by rank as a requisite physical property index to differentiate semianthracite from low-volatile bituminous coal and also high-volatile ""C"" bituminous from subbituminous ""A"" coal, as shown in table 1, the standard coal classification adopted by the American Society for Testing Materials and the American Standards Association. 5./In studying the agglomerating properties of coals based on the coke residue the Bureau of Mines has adopted the notation given in table 2. Coals that in the volatile-matter determination give a coke residue either in the form of an agglomerate button that will support a 500-gram weight without pulverizing or a button that shows swelling or cell structure are considered to be agglomerating."

Because of continuing concerns regarding the effects of cumulative quantities of materials in the environment, the Bureau of Mines has initiated a series of studies to evaluate, to the fullest extent possible, all aspects of the materials flow sequence fur selected commodities. Although tungsten and its compounds do not pose a significant health hazard to the environment, they do represent valuable resource materials to which appropriate conservation considerations must be given. The present study includes a description of recent trends in the consumption, loss, and recycling of tungsten-containing materials in the United States during the period 1974 to 1991 and an estimation of the cumulative loss of tungsten to the environment since 1910. Obsolete tungsten is recycled primarily as cemented tungsten carbide components that have been used in cutting and wear-resistant applications. The quantity recycled, as a of annual U.S. consumption of tungsten, was estimated to have increased from 10% in 1974 to 341a in 1991. An estimated 58% of the 148,000 metric tons of primary tungsten consumed since 1910 was lost to the environment through means such as dissipation, discard, and dilution.

Because of problems encountered with conventional timber supports, a system of concrete sausageshaped support pillars was tested. The pillars are 3 m long, 0,6 m wide, and between 70 and 80 cm high (the height of the stoping width). They consist of bags filled with a grout of cement (slagment and sand in the ratio of I :2, and are installed in a staggered pattern 6 m apart on dip and 2 m apart on strike. These support packs have proved successful, and, although they cost more than the timber supports formerly used (R4,63 per cent are supported as against R2,26 for the conventional timber pack), their use is felt to be justified when account is taken of the costs of lost production and low productivity due to the bad hangingwall conditions that occurred with the conventional system.

A general review of the laboratory and field research being conducted at Michigan Technological University in the area of diesel emissions is presented. The facilities involved with this research are also described. These are the Experimental Mine, the diesel dilution tunnel test cell, the Mine Air Monitoring Lab (MAML), the portable instruments and the production mines used.
