Microwaves are being applied industrially in a number of fields and possess a number of potential advantages that could be applied in extractive metallurgy. Microwave heating has a number of unique characteristics, which distinguish it from the conventional heating methods. In microwave heating, the absorption of energy occurs at the molecular or atomic level and therefore the heat is generated within the material itself. In conventional heating, the exterior temperature is usually higher than the interior, but with microwave heating, the temperature gradient is inverted and thus the interior temperature can be much higher than that of the surface. The energy densities in microwave systems can be relatively high and this in combination with the low thermal conductivities of oxide ores, can lead to very high internal heating rates. In this research, the application of microwave energy for the reduction of a nickeliferous silicate laterite ore has been investigated. The real and imaginary permittivities are the two fundamental properties which determine the microwave absorption characteristics of a material and these were measured for the ore, both with and without carbon additions using the cavity perturbation technique. The microwave heating and reduction experiments were performed in a 0 to 2 kW CTC microwave system. The effects of power input, processing time, sample mass and charcoal additions on the microwave absorption were investigated. Then reduction experiments were performed and the nickel grade of the magnetic concentrate and the nickel recovery in the concentrate were determined.

JUDGING by the progressive atmosphere prevailing in the nonmetallic mineral industries during the past year, postwar conditions were healthful though inflationary. Demand for most industrial mineral products has been exceptionally high and many new production records were attained. Severe shortages of some commodities existed, especially building materials and fertilizers. Production costs and prices increased and profitable operation was general. Under these conditions expansion programs were the order of the day. Ample funds were available to finance the purchase of good equipment; and, as wages and other operating costs were increasing, primary emphasis was placed on attaining maximum efficiency in new installations. These efforts were hampered by shortages and slow delivery of desirable equipment, so compromises in design were often necessary. However, on the whole, production practice improved.

In the present number of Mining and Metallurgy, issued on the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the Institute, it appears appropriate to chronicle a few of the interesting incidents respecting its early life. We are fortunate in being able to cull the following notes from unpublished manuscripts of Doctor Raymond and Doctor Drinker, than whom no other members could have written with greater exactness and fidelity. THE seventh decade of the 19th century may be said to have marked an. era in the history of the world. Industrially and .commercially it was marked by the wide application and utilization of discoveries already made, which came to their full effect at this period in steamships, railways, telegraph and cable lines; the standardization of parts in machines, from watches to locomotives; the use of 'dynamite, antiseptic surgery, the open-hearth steel process, the compressed-air rock-drill, the electric generator, and the Gatling gun. Through the opening of the Suez canal in 1870 the maritime trade of the world was revolutionized, sailing vessels were supplanted by steamers, while ocean cables and ocean "tramps" brought about far more rapid movement of commerce than had before been experienced. Politically, this period was marked by the sudden birth of the German empire and the beginning of that intensive internal development of the national resources of that empire in preparation for colonial extension and war, the amazing result of which has been made evident by the recent world conflict. WITH the large amount of metallurgical re- search work now being done and the constant effort of the engineer to effect economies of operation, I think it is a safe prediction that the next few years will see a great change in the handling of mine products. The well-managed mine, with sufficient ore reserves to warrant the necessary plants, will increasingly call upon the metallurgist and chemist for the solution of its problems. Shipping sorted ore or concentrate to the nearest smelter will not be the course followed. From ore to metal, or at least to a product directly salable to the consumer, will be the practice followed. As a consequence, mine managers will be increasingly interested in metal trade problems. By metal trade I mean the buying, selling, shipping, handling, and all the practices, forms and customs that go to make up the trade.

MUCH has been said in print, and much more that was unprintable, about burdensome controls, taxation, and multiplying restrictive, regulatory, or taxing activities of the Federal Government, but not so much has been said about ways and means whereby the Government can and does render economic assistance. Economics has been defined as the study of men earning a living, and economic assistance to industry as well as to individuals properly should take the form of helping enterprisers to help themselves rather than charity. Proposals to have the Government play Santa Claus must be examined carefully if -only to avoid undue favoritism to politically important persons and downright venality by potentially crooked public officials. Thomas Jefferson is credited with the remark that the best government is the one which governs least. Paternalism is abhorrent to most Americans.

Plastometric tests were made to determine the maximum thickness of the plastic layer for different U.S. coals . The effect of test variables on the maximum thickness of the plastic layer was studied . The values for the maximum thickness of the plastic layer were found to be related to the Gieseler maximum fluidity , plastic temperature range , free swelling index , and other plastic properties of coals . Only a general relationship was observed between the plastometric parameters obtained in these tests and the coking properties of coal .

Now that such a method of evaluating metallurgical efficiency has been developed and proven practical, it Would seem logical to introduce the next, and more final, factor of Economic Efficiency. I choose to define this term as the percentage ratio of net return from milling to the theoretical maximum net return. The actual operating cost subtracted from the actual mill return represents the net actual amount received for the material treated. Experienced operators of most plants Would ordinarily have enough data on hand to estimate a theoretical milling cost per ton, based on labor, power, supplies and maintenance When operating at maximum tonnage With minimum trouble and under ideal ore conditions. When this theoretical estimated cost is subtracted from the theoretical maximum ore return (calculated by Pallanch's method) the resulting figure is the maximum theoretical net amount the mill operator could hope to realize in processing the ore. The percentage ratio of these sums, of actual to theoretical, is the economic efficiency of the operations. This economic efficiency, if determined on the basis of a fixed market price for metal and similarly fixed base rates for labor, power and supplies, Will reflect the effect of changes in milling practice, labor efficiency and equipment condition. When computations made on the basis of actual current rates for labor, power and supplies are compared With similar actual figures for past periods they will show forcefully how energetic our hunt must be to develop man saving controls, more effective metallurgy, and better equipment to maintain profitable operations. Such computations also offer a simple means of determining how much more labor, supplies and power can be put into the mill operation to obtain an increase in metallurgical recovery at a profit.

WE RECENTLY completed a study for a client, who is an applicant to export gas from the Province of Alberta, on the effects of gas export on Alberta's economy. This study was part of the client's application ?before the Conservation Board, and, no doubt, some of you are familiar with it. Submissions by other applicants in earlier hearings before the Board and before the Royal Commission on Energy, as well as claims made by parties opposing export, have also brought forward a number of other opmwns regarding possible economic effects. Ali of these studies have been on a piecemeal basis. They have dealt with particular aspects of particular applications, and only indirectly and by inference with the overall question of gas ex-port. We have prepared this paper to review the overall picture and ex-amine, as far as time permits, all sides of the question. While the paper is entitled Economic Effects of Gas Export on Alberta, we felt that the area considered should in-elude northeastern British Columbia, not only because Westcoast, the first major gas export project, is essentially a northeastern B. C. project, but because this area has historically been, from the point of view of economic, if not of political, geography, part of Alberta. In this paper, when we talk of export, we mean export from the Province or, in this case, from Alberta plus northeastern B. C. Sales to other parts of Canada have exactly the same effect on the economy of this area as l1ave sales to the United States, provided, of course, they are made on equal terms.

"Niobec mine, a producer of pyrochlore concentrates since 1976, became a producer of ferroniobium in 1994 and achieved accreditation to the ISO 9002 standard in 1995. The goal of ISO 9002 is to ensure that the products supplied to clients regularly meet their specifications, through explicit work standards and procedures throughout the production process, from deposit appraisal to ferroniobium production.A key element of ISO 9002 implementation at Niobec consists of the quality control procedures applied to the raw materials: the ore fed to the mill and the pyrochlore concentrate fed to the reduction plant. These controls extend from exploration, deposit appraisal, mine planning and reserves estimation, mining, mineral processing and, finally, ferroniobium production. The implementation of ISO 9002 has allowed more efficient control of the quality of the final product sold to clients. It requires interactive team work, the role of the geologist being to relate all information pertaining to raw material and product quality to the geological framework of the deposits."

The paper deals with a process that allows the recycling in a cupola of EAF dusts with 18 % Zn. It produces dusts with zinc grade higher than 50 - 55 % and commercial cast iron with less than 200 ppm Zn, 50 ppm Pb, 0.15 % S. The paper focuses mainly on lab tests made with the aim to develop an effective formulation of self reducing - melting pellets. With such a formulation, agglomerates develop a breaking load higher than 125 - 150 kg without any thermal treatment. Zinc and lead are volatilized in the cupola with yields higher than 95 % at 1200 OC, before any melting. Sulphur is transfemed into gas and slag. All these conditions allow to lower zinc, lead and sulphur grades below the cast iron specifications. Results of first bench scale tests performed at Fonderie Piret to validate the process will be presented.

"Constructions activities in cities often imply large volumes of surplus material which could be treated by stabilization for re-use in new geotechnical constructions. Modification of dredged sediments by e.g. stabilization/solidification (s/s) is an example of sustainable handling option implying dredged contaminated sediments to become a potential resource for civil engineering constructions. The SMOCS project (Sustainable Management of Contaminated Sediments) within the Baltic Sea Region Programme 2007-2013 has developed a guideline based on a sustainability approach free to download at www.smocs.eu. The paper presents key issues in the guideline and highlights the importance of performing a field test as part of the design process. Two field tests with s/s-treated dredged sediments for new port areas are presented. Strength, permeability and leakage properties of s/s-treated contaminated sediments make beneficial use in geo-constructions possible. The influence of possible physical/chemical deterioration processes on the durability has been studied showing that freeze/thaw cycles might degrade the monolith of s/s-treated sediments. Consequently s/s-constructions shall be below freezing depth. Other deterioration processes such as salt and sulfate penetration were found of minor importance. Research is on-going to study the influence of and how to cope with freeze/thaw cycles on the long-term properties.BACKGROUNDConstructions activities in cities often imply large volumes of surplus material which could be treated by stabilization for re-use in new geotechnical constructions. A field test on the application of the stabilization/solidification method for treatment of dredged soft contaminated sediments was implemented in the Port of Gävle, Sweden. IT is with sincere appreciation and a deep sense of responsibility that I accept the honor of delivering the Howe Memorial Lecture. In our time metallurgical research has delved into phenomena ever more complex in character, so that much of this work must be done by organized teams. We, of the Union Carbide and Carbon Research Laboratories and the Electro Metallurgical Co., are truly a team and the lecture which is to follow is due largely to a few of the outstanding members of that team here cited and well known to you in their own right: John Lamont, whose work deserves special recognition, Walter Crafts, William Forgeng, William Binder, Robert Fowler, and David Swan. Thus it is a fitting pleasure to accept this honor for the research institution which I represent. Henry Marion Howe was truly inspirational and his breadth of view was such that he could use either the method of rigid proof or implied mechanism to further the broad understanding. But perhaps his outstanding characteristic was his sound judgment and his ability to weigh observations. The following is replete with observations and judgment as to their implication. We would like to feel that it is the type of dissertation which Howe, himself, would have enjoyed. Chromium carbides in stainless steel have, in a sense, been a key to the progress of the stainless steel industry. Brearley's first stainless steel, containing approximately 0.30 pct C, was successful because it differed from previous Fe-Cr alloys in that the carbides were present in such amount and form as to provide the stainless and cutting properties. Again, the 12 pct Cr die steels with a carbon content of 1.5 pct or more achieved their properties by virtue of the form and distribution of the chromium carbides. In the straight chromium steels with from 12 to 25 pct Cr, chromium carbide amount and distribution are once more the determinants with respect to physical properties and corrosion resistance. In each of the cases just cited the role of the carbide is in essence similar to that of iron carbide in carbon steel and this story is so well known that we need not dwell on it. In the austenitic stainless steels, the chromium carbide plays only a minor positive role with respect to mechanical properties, and for corrosion resistance the objective is to achieve maximum homogeneity. Thus the tendency has been to ever lower the carbon and correlatively the chromium carbide content of the austenitic steels. Today stainless steels with carbon less than 0.03 pct are beginning to find their true place, and this is being aided in major degree by our Company's introduction of a new type of ferrochromium having negligible carbon. The role of carbon in these austenitic steels has long been recognized, and a truly enormous amount of research has been devoted to the subject. Much has been learned about corrosion resistance, but the attack on the problem from the point of view of carbide precipitation and the nature thereof has left much to be understood. Because of its fundamental importance to the future of stainless steels, further study of the mechanism of carbide formation in austenitic steels is of interest. In the 18-8 Cr-Ni steels, which are typical of the austenitic class of steel, carbon is soluble in the aus-tenite to the extent of approximately 0.15 pct at 1832°F (1000°C). The solubility becomes less with decreasing temperature, so that at 1652°F (900°C) the solubility limit is approximately 0.06 pct, at 1472°F (800°C) it is about 0.03 pct, and at 932°F (500°C) it is approximately 0.01 pct. Obviously this is the ideal situation for the classical precipitation phenomenon. It is true that, in a sense, 18-8 austenite resulting from annealing is in a metastable state, and the phenomenon of ferritic precipitation from this austenite should be considered. However, in a so-called fully austenitic 18-8 steel this is secondary with respect to the carbides and can be neglected. A wide variety of chromium carbides is known. Only one chromium carbide, Cr,,C,,, frequently referred to as Cr,C, has been found in unmodified low carbon 18-8 steel. This, fortunately, simplifies the study of the precipitation phenomena. For this study an A.I.S.I. type 304 stainless steel of commercial quality was selected. Analysis showed C 0.07 pct, Mn 0.49 pct, Si 0.33 pct, Ni 9.34 pct, Cr 18.91 pct, and N 0.033 pct. As expected with this composition the steel was homogeneous after annealing except for a few pools of ferrite, which were disregarded in that their location was not coincident with subsequent carbide precipitation areas. On corrosion testing the steel was normal and typical of good commercial quality. Specimens 1/2xlx4 in. were annealed and subjected to precipitation heat treatment for 100 hr at 100" temperature intervals from 1000° to 1500°F and for ten selected intervals ranging from 5 min to 64 hr at 1300°F. The purpose of the present study was to develop and test improved Type V workvests for use on dredge operations. The goal was to design workvests that would be more comfortable to wear, would interfere less with task performance, and would better meet the needs of dredge workers. It was hypothesized that by attaining these goals, the resulting vests would be worn more often and would be kept buckled more of the time than traditional vests. The study involved three major phases. In Phase I, visits were made to dredge operations and a definition of the problem was developed. Problems with current vests were identified and working conditions and tasks surveyed In Phase II, prototype vests were developed and laboratory tests were per-formed to assess comfort and interference. In Phase III, the prototypes were modified and field tested with actual dredge operators and workers.

Mine and ore beneficiation wastes and smelter contaminated soils often cause phytotoxicity and threaten adverse environmental effects if not remediated. Science has clarified both the risks from soil metals and methods to alleviate those risks that can be applied at low cost. Phytoremediation is a family of plant and agronomy based technologies to deal with environmental aspects of sites requiring remediation. If valid risk assessment indicates that metals comprise risk, phytostabilisation may be used to alleviate that risk for most contaminated sites. In particular, Zn-Pb, Cu and Ni mine and smelter sites are readily remediated by making the soil calcareous and fertile, with added organic and metal sorbent amendments that include soil microbes to ‘revitalise’ the soil. In each case, the soil fertility and causes of phytotoxicity should be clarified by agricultural soil extractions, and the combination of amendments required to improve fertility and reverse phytotoxicity identified and found locally. In contrast with phytostabilisation, phytoextraction/phytomining uses rare metal hyperaccumulator plants and agronomic management to maximise annual phytoextraction of soil elements into plant shoots for harvest, ashing and use as a metal ore. Plants that accumulate more than two per cent Ni in shoots, and yield 10–20 t ha-1 dry biomass yield 200–400 kg Ni ha-1, which has value greater than all common agricultural crops. Considering the value of elements, existence of hyperaccumulator plants and demonstrated agronomic management for Ni phytomining, it is clear that mine sites and Ni mineralised subore-grade serpentine soils can be phytomined economically as an agricultural mining technology. A team developed agronomic methods and improved cultivars of Alyssum, which can be profitably grown on temperate zone Ni mineralised or contaminated soils. Plant species for tropical ultramafic soil materials have been identified. THE John Fritz Gold Medal for 1929 was presented to Herbert Hoover at the Executive Mansion on April 25, at a luncheon given by Mr. Hoover to present and past members of the Board of Award, preceding medalists, and presidents and secretaries of the American societies of Civil, Mining and Metallurgical, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineers. The presentation party of forty engineers which gathered at the White House, from all parts of the United States, was made up of past presidents of the four senior national engineering societies that established the John Fritz Medal and included five men who had received the medal in previous years. These former medalists were Edward Dean Adams, J. J. Carty, J. Waldo Smith, Elmer A. Sperry and Ambrose Swasey. This medal is the highest honor bestowed by these four national engineering societies, having a membership of 60,000. It is awarded not oftener than annually for "notable scientific or industrial achievement, without restriction on account of nationality or sex." In accordance with custom, the award to Mr. Hoover was made tentatively and without announcement in October, 1927, and was formally con- firmed and announced one year later.

Among the rarest of the rare metals are four that are linked together by a common historical background as well as by chemical relationship. With the excep- tion of indium, these metals are likewise characterized by the patriotic nature of the names given them by their discoverers. The existence of gallium, germanium, and scandium, was predicted by the Russian cherist, D. I. Mendeleeff some time prior to their discovery; and these elements might well have been overlooked, had not the search been stimulated by the urge to confirm the scientific hypothesis of their existence. Nowhare found in sufficient quantities to attract attention, these little known elemente are nevertheless widely distributed in the earth's crust. So far they are found commercially mostly in the sulphide ores of zinc and must be considered as being largely curiosities of the zinc smelter. Recent progress in electrolytic zinc refining, however, now gives promise that the way may be open for the recovery of these very rare metals in larger quantities-- possibly in quantities sufficient to permit of their finding commercial utilization.

During the past decades, cyclone electrowinning (CE) has been regarded as a novel separation technology, which can be used for direct electrowinning of metals from low concentration solution. Recently, CE was proven effective for the treatment of antimonic gold concentrates. The experimental results of cyclone electrowinning of antimony show the current efficiency increases from 43.8 to 72.2% with the increasing current density (from 254.8 to 647.3 A/m2), and on the other hand, power consumption per ton antimony decreases from 6100 to 4200 kWh with the aforementioned increasing current density. The grade of the obtained cathode antimony could reach 98.6%. Compared with the traditional electrowinning using parallel-board electrodes, the economic profit of CE was 33.1% higher attributed to the high current efficiency of CE. In addition, CE could adapt to high current density. All these characteristics indicate the CE method can be implemented commercially for processing antimonic gold concentrates.

A series of studies of emissions from large coal-fired steam generators have included measurements of the concentrations of oxides of sulfur and oxides of notrogen. The sampling equipment, method of sampling, and analytical techniques used for processing of these samples are detailed. A method based on the precipitation of benzidine sulfate was developed for determining both SO3 and total oxides of sulfur in the presence of interfering acidic components in the stack gases. In addition, difficulties encountered with sampling and analytical techniques are also described.
