Faults under high rock cover represent some of the most severe ground conditions a Tunneler can encounter. High ground water pressures and flows are usually associated with mountain faults. Ground behavior can range from blocky ground to flowing sands and squeezing clays. Sticking a IBM within a fault zone for many weeks, with the disastrous financial consequences, is still a common occurrence. Interpreting the geology and detecting the location of a fault prior to penetrating it is a fundamental step to successful tunneling. Ground water control through predraining or pre-grouting is the second fundamental step. This paper discusses techniques applied for detecting and crossing mountainous fault zones through the use of case histories across the globe.

The following review covers published information on pressing of metal powders at room temperature. Only those operations are considered which occur between the time the powder is filled into the cavity and the compact is ejected from the die. Thus, this review does not concern hot pressing, coining or sizing feed or flow problems, commercial presses nor designs. It was also necessary to disregard to a large extent the effect of pressing on subsequent operations and on properties after sintering. 'The pressing operation is considered independently in its function to compact loose metal powder into useful shapes which can subsequently be handled. There are some comments by the writer in connection with a few of the findings quoted in the literature in order to stimulate thought and discussion. The selection of references quoted in the text is in some cases arbitrary although an attempt was made to favor papers containing novel ideas, techniques or results which mag stimulate future research. In order to enable the reader to check further into the subjects mentioned, the original, rather extensive, bibliography is appended even though not all the references are touched on in the printed version of this review. The equipment used by various workers, for example a die design created by Bridgman,22 is very interesting. 'The die insert has a conical external surface. The vertical pressure exerted on the punch transmits itself to the die which in turn is pushed harder into its tapered retainer. Thus, the higher the pressure exerted on the punch, the higher also the pressure exerted inwards on the die inserts. Inasmuch as this pressure counteracts the internal pressure from the compact the two stresses balance each other so that it is possible to obtain tremendous pressures without breaking the die. The die collar was made from an oil hardening tool steel, heat treated to a tensile strength of some 300,000 psi. The die was closed at the bottom by a plug made from special tool steels. Bridgman found that there is no steel which will withstand a com-pressive stress of 700,000 psi without continuous slow flow or immediate fracture. Therefore, the only material suitable for use in the pressing punch was sintered carbide. In view of the ingenious design it was possible to use special tool steel as die material. Jones22 raises the question whether this method of pressing has practical application in powder metallurgy. Although these tremendous pressures cannot readily be utilized without many special precautions, the tapered die and retainer idea is believed to be useful even for lower pressures. This final report summarizes the work done by The Bendix Corporation, Environmental Science Division, under contract to the Bureau of Mines to design, develop and test two improved systems for remote sampling the air at the working face of a coal mine in conjunction with approved portable methane detectors and machine-mounted methane monitors respectively. The work was started in May 1973 with preliminary design studies and was completed in May 1975. Five portable and two machine-mounted sampling systems were delivered. Contract "add-on" requirements for (1) modification of the machine-mounted system to accommodate a flame safety lamp and (2) a study of sensor response time improvement for the machine-mounted system were also completed.

A review of the practices of analyzing for precious metals at the Reno Research Center, U.S. Bureau of mines, is presented. A general description of fire assaying, the physical layout of a fire assay laboratory, and the use of fire assaying in combination with atomic absorption, induction coupled plasma, and emission spectroscopy is reviewed. The combination of techniques significantly decreases the detection limits for precious metal analyses and simplifies the analysis of the platinum-group metals. Methods of protecting personnel from ingestion of lead are also discussed.

There are three major components of a fully grouted roof bolt which primarily determine its ability to develop and sustain load: the steel rebar, the resin annulus, and the rock/grout interface. The untensioned, fully grouted roof bolt is subjected to loading only when the surrounding rock deforms. Vertical rock deformation is generally a result of strata sagging and bedding plane separation, whereas horizontal deformation is typically a result of bedding plane sliding. These two types of deformation create different types of internal loads with-in the roof bolt, tensile stress for vertical rock deformations and shear stress for horizontal rock deformations. Also, as a result of the mutual load transfer between the rock and bolt, shear stress will be developed along the grout/rock interface. According to the exact bolt loading conditions, different failure modes may occur: bolt axial failure, bolt shear failure, and shear failure along the grout/rock interface. Understanding these possible failure modes and their root causes is the key to eliminating roof failures in underground mines employing fully grouted resin bolts. Using ABAQUS 5.8, a finite element model was developed to simulate the components of the fully grouted bolt and its interaction with the surrounding roof strata. Several models were conducted to investigate how load transfer occurs between the rock and the bolt under different geological and mining conditions. The effects of bed-ding plane location and properties, and strata sequence on bolt stability were studied. Also, the effects of hole roughness on bolt stability were discussed. Bolt axial failure was not observed within the range of the studied parameters; however, a combination of high overburden depth, a bedding plane located at 2 to 3 ft from the roofline or a low coefficient of friction along the bedding plane caused strata sliding and shears failure in the bolt. Also, in the case of a weak immediate roof, the shear stress at the grout/rock interface could exceed its ultimate capacity lead to slippage.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Otago Schist belt of southern New Zealand hosts widespread orogenic gold deposits. Erosion of these orogenic gold deposits has led to the formation of numerous placer deposits distributed across and beyond the host schist belt. Numerical modelling of crustal scale deformation and geomorphic evolution has defined the key tectonic features that have controlled the severance of detrital gold deposits from their sources. Tectonic activity over the past 20 million years, during development of the modern Pacific-Australian plate boundary, has severed links between some placers and their sources. Detrital gold was transported south from the Otago Schist source region in two different river systems in the Miocene. Mesozoic orogenic gold deposits shed gold into rivers that flowed to the south. These rivers were terminated by the rise of north-west-trending basement ridges at the boundary between weak schist crust and strong greywacke crust, and the ridges were controlled by pre-existing faults at that rheological boundary. In contrast, rising mountains close to the developing plate boundary in the Miocene were the locus of new orogenic gold deposits hosted in extensional faults. These gold deposits were rapidly exhumed and contributed detrital gold to orogen-parallel Miocene rivers that flowed to the south-west. Pleistocene deformation on mainly north-west and north-east orientations, and associated river capture, has severed the links between these Miocene orogenic deposits and downstream detrital gold.CITATION:Craw, D and Upton, P, 2015. Reduction of CO2 emissions is the key driving force behind the development and implementation of new solutions for energy production. One solution is circulating fluidized bed (CFB) combustion technology combined with a high-efficiency once-through water-steam cycle. Foster Wheeler's CFB technology is today commercially available in capacities up to 800 MWe with ultra-supercritical steam parameters. Simultaneously, the Flexi-Burn® CFB technology is being developed to provide capability of flexible operation in air firing and oxy-combustion for carbon capture. CFB technology can offer an attractive solution for the reduction of CO2 emissions, owing to advantages such as fuel flexibility and low emissions that the air-fired CFB technology offers today. Pilot test facilities provide information about the performance of CFB oxy-combustion technology, and the acquired knowledge is being incorporated in boiler modelling and design tools. One of the European R&D initiatives on carbon capture and storage (CCS) is the Technological Centre for CO2 Capture and Transport, which is supported by the Spanish Government through the Fundación Ciudad de la Energía (CIUDEN). CIUDEN is a research and development institution created by the Spanish administration in 2006 and fully conceived for collaborative research in CO2 capture, transportation, and storage. The Technology Development Centre for CO2 Capture and Transport comprises two technologies on oxy-combustion: pulverized coal (PC) and circulating fluidized bed (CFB). This paper will focus on the design and main characteristics of the 30 megawatt-hour thermal capacity (MWth) oxy-CFB boiler. Foster Wheeler is the technology provider of the Flexi-Burn CFB unit, for which commissioning has been completed in the first quarter of 2011. The CFB unit design allows operation either under conven¬tional combustion with air or under oxy-fuel conditions. The size of this experimental boiler is sufficient to allow the scaling of the results to commercial units. In this way, multiple fuels and operating conditions can be tested economically. The results will validate the design of a future 330 MWe supercritical Oxy-Combustion Power Station (OXY-CFB-300 Compostilla Project) intended to demonstrate the CCS technology at commercial scale. The Compostilla OXY-CFB-300 Project is one of the six CCS demonstration projects funded under the European Energy Programme for Recovery (EEPR) of the EU. The project is based on a future 330 MWe CFB supercritical oxy-combustion plant, with CO2 storage in a deep geological formation. The first phase of the project, granted by the EEPR programme and led by the Spanish utility ENDESA, includes all studies and characterization work needed on CO2 capture, transport, and storage, as well the costs, financing, and regulatory and permitting required, prior to the final investment decision for the construction phase of the plant by the end of 2012.

The suitability of char from Yallourn brown coal as a filler for carbon electrodes used in the aluminium smelting industry has been assessed on the basis of the specifications usually laid down by electrode manufacturers for petroleum coke fillers. The purity specifications can be met by a simple acid leaching of the coal before carbonization. The true density of char produced at 1200°C is within 5 per cent of the specification figure, but the bulk density of char obtained from as-mined coal is only half that specified for petroleum coke.Although this can be increased to three-quarters of the specified figure by briquetting the coal before carbonization, further increases would be very difficult to achieve, as the remaining shortfall in density is due to an extensive microporosity developed in the particles of char during carbonization.

September 2005, Northern Dynasty Mines announced the discovery of a new, high-grade deposit at its Pebble project in southwest Alaska. The product of insightful geological investigation, Pebble East, as it is now known, is quickly growing into one of the most significant copper deposits in the world. Preliminary analysis shows it could reduce the U.S. copper supply deficit by a third. The new deposit has also altered Northern Dynasty’s view of how Pebble should be developed. This article describes the Pebble project as it is currently understood and outlines the work planned for the next several years.

Advanced Jig Separation of Shredded Plastics The authors have reported that the RETAC jig is very useful in separating relatively low density particles such as plastics, and demonstrated that highly efficient jig separation of plastic components in discarded office machines is possible in pilot-scale tests. To further improve the separation efficiency, a hybrid jig (RETAC jig with air bubbler under the particle bed) which can separate plastics having similar specific gravities using differences in wettability produced by a pretreatment, and a reverse jig (modified RETAC jig for plastics lighter than water) were developed. This paper reviews the separation of shredded plastics using advanced jig separation technology (RETAC, hybrid and reverse jigs). Wettability control of the plastics for the advanced jig separation is also reported.

A process has been developed at Curtin University whereby glycine is used in an alkaline environment to leach gold, silver and copper from their ores, concentrates, process intermediates and wastes. Copper mineralisation investigated includes various oxides, sulfides and native copper. The leach process utilises an oxidising environment such as oxygen. Glycine is a non-toxic, non-volatile, edible, low cost reagent which is produced in large industrial quantities for use in several industries. Glycine and its copper and precious metals complexes are stable over wide pH, Eh and temperature ranges. Other than losses in leach residues, the glycine is recovered and recycled for leaching. Iron dissolution is insignificant in the pregnant leach solution. Iron in pyrite remains unaffected, whereas iron associated with base metal sulfides (e.g. chalcopyrite and bornite) is converted to a readily filterable iron hydroxide. Efficient separation of copper by solvent extraction and conventional electrowinning has been shown to be feasible for a number of organic extractants, whereas gold and silver glycinates adsorb very well onto carbon allowing CIP/CIL/CIC (carbon-in-column) based processes. The process is ideal for ores containing acid-consuming gangue, concentrates with high arsenic or halide contents and for copper-gold ores with significant sulfide mineralisation. The process eliminates many of the problems associated with the processing of copper-gold-silver ores, such as elemental sulfur formation, silica gels, unwanted metal co-dissolution, and jarosite precipitation. The reagents used and process residues are much safer and environmentally benign than conventional process options. The processing technology can be applied to in-situ, heap and vat, or agitated tank leaching at temperatures ranging from ambient to below 100?C at atmospheric pressure and is currently being commercialised. This paper will focus on copper leaching and recovery and iron rejection from a chalcopyrite flotation concentrate.

This paper describes the tower foundation design and construction experience for the 345kV Youngheung marine transmission line, which has been in commercial operation in Korea since July, 2004. This transmission line was designed and constructed to meet the rapidly increasing power demands of metropolitan areas and supply stable, bulk electric power from the Yonghung thermal power plant into metropolitan areas. This transmission line passes over the west sea, Lake Sihwa and over land. In order to successfully complete this project, and to safely support the tower during severe maritime conditions, several types of tower foundation such as Pad and Chimney foundation, Pier (Cylindrical) foundation, R.C.D foundation, Jacket pile foundation and Steel pipe pile + concrete mat foundation were developed and used. As the world?s first and longest marine transmission line, the 345kV Yonghung marine transmission line operates successfully, thanks to several high-tech civil engineering technologies and KEPCO?s accumulated experience.

Compared to conventional fully ducted axial and centrifugal fan systems, jet fans can offer a number of advantages for control of smoke during fire emergencies and dilution of diesel engine exhaust products in vehicular and rail tunnels. The success of jet fan applications is the result of a balance between the temperature de-rating of the fan, buoyancy forces and the installation momentum transfer efficiency. This paper provides a case study of a unique application of vertically-mounted jet fans in ventilation shafts used to provide both emergency ventilation and pollution control for an overbuild created by the construction of a series of commercial high-rise residential buildings over a portion of an existing passenger rail line. A detailed evaluation of a set of shafts for one building is presented, including a discussion of the calculation methods used to estimate the required jet fan capacity and the results of the subsequent numerical analysis using Computational Fluid Dynamics to simulate the performance of the jet fans during train car fire emergencies.

The applications of optical spectrochemical methods of analysis for determining trace impurities in metals are described, and the need for developing analytical procedures capable of accurately determining fractional parts per million of impurity elements in metals is stressed. Factors which determine sensitivity of detection and means to extend sensitivity levels in spectrochemical methods are discussed. Examples from the current literature illustrate the diversity of spectrochemical techniques that have been applied to the analyses of varied sample types, Many of the methods use preconcentration procedures to increase sensitivity limits. A bibliography containing abstracts of recent methods in included. Optical spectrochemical analysis is based upon the measurement of radiant energy emitted by atoms of the elements to be determined when a sample is subjected to a suitable source of excitation. The behavior of the valence electrons during excitation, usually by an arc, spark, or flame, produces radiant energy of specific wavelengths. This is recorded as spectral line images on a photographic film or plate by the spectrograph; for direct-reading instruments, the spectral lines are detected with photomultiplier tubes. The spectral lines result from the excitation of atoms in the sample. Each variety of atom produces its own characteristic set of lines, thus serving to identify the elements in the sample. Increased concentrations of elements in the excited sample results in increased blackening of the spectral line images.

Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are studying the time-dependent response of rock stressed along weakness planes. The objective is to improve mine safety by reducing the number of roof falls that cause injuries and fatalities to miners. Researchers conducted direct-shear tests on mud-stoneovercored from a coal mine roof. Results showed frictional strength weakens with displacement along the shearing planes. Results of direct-shear creep tests also showed time-dependent deformation. Test measurements were compared to classical analytical models. Results suggest that risk of roof collapse may be decreased through layout and support design to reduce creep rates and thus slow progression toward failure.

Gas phase hydrocarbons produced from underground reservoirs will, in many instances, have liquid phase material associated with them, the presence of which can affect the flowing characteristics of the well. Liquids can come from condensation of hydrocarbon gas (condensate) or from interstitial water in the reservoir matrix. In either case, the higher density liquid phase, being essentially discontinuous, must be transported to the surface by the gas. In the event the gas phase does not provide sufficient transport energy to lift the liquids out of the well, the liquids will accumulate in the wellbore. The accumulation of the liquid will impose an additional back pressure on the formation that can significantly affect the production capacity of the well. In low pressure wells the liquid may completely kill the well; and in the higher pressure wells there can occur a variable degree of slugging or churning of the liquids, which can affect calculations used in routine well tests. Specifically, the calculated bottom-hole pressures used in multirate backpressure tests will be erroneous if the well is not removing liquids on a continuous basis, and gas:liquid ratios observed during such a test may not be correct. Several authors1,3,8,14 have suggested methods to determine if the flow rate of a well is sufficient to remove liquid phase material. Vitter14 and Duggan' proposed that wellhead velocities observed in the field would be adequate for keeping wells unloaded. Jones8 and Dukler3 presented analytical treatments resulting in equations for calculating, from physical properties, the minimum necessary flow rate. An analysis of these studies indicates the existence of two proposed physical models for the removal of gas well liquids: (1) liquid film movement along the walls of the pipe and (2) liquid droplets entrained in the high velocity gas core. Although there probably is a continuous exchange of liquid between the gas core and the film, they will be treated separately for the purposes of this study. The development and comparison of these separate models with experimental data will permit the determination of which, if either, is the controlling mechanism for the removal of liquids from gas wells. The Continuous Film Model Liquid phase accumulation on the walls of a conduit during two-phase gas/liquid flow is inevitable due to the impingement of entrained liquid drops and the condensation of vapors. The movement of the liquid on the wall is therefore of interest in the analysis of liquid removal from gas wells. If the annular liquid film must be moved upward along the walls in order to keep a gas well from loading up, then the minimum gas flow rate necessary to accomplish this is of primary interest. The analysis technique used follows Dukler2 and Hewitt5 and involves describing the profile of the velocity of a liquid film moving upward on the inside of a tube. The minimum rate of gas flow required to move the film upward is then calculated.

A GREAT deal of attention has lately been given to the discussion as to the education required for engineers, and especially for mining engineers. The Institute of Civil Engineers has had a committee's report on it which has come to some interesting and valuable conclusions.The Institute of Mining and Metallurgy had a few years back a very long discussion on the subject, and the subject appears to be one of perennial interest to similar societies. Two recent addresses by Prof. Kernot, as president of the Victorian Instituteof Civil Engineers, are among the most interesting and practical of the contributions to the discussion. Engineers seem to feel either that the coming generation has not the same capacity to benefit by the training that has made themselves what they are, or that such training has turned out in themselves inefficient men, and that they must consequently struggle to obtain a better one for their successors. For not only is there a desire to extend existing instruction to cover the advances of science, but there seems to be a general desire also to make a completely radical change in the methods.It is not necessary to observe that education does not mean the imparting and acquiring of information, but rather the cultivation of the faculties so that the best use can be made of them and of any information acquired. For instance, a man is not educated who has by heart his lectures and the contents of his text-books, but that man is who remembers little of the actual wording of his text-books, but is able to find anything required in them...
