Amax Coal Industries Inc.'s Delta Mine is a medium-sized. high-sulfur coal producer that has lived up to the challenges posed by nearly six decades of a highly competitive domestic coal market. The mine now faces one of its biggest challenges - the same one staring at the dozens of other high-sulfur producers in the Midwest - the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990. The 59-year-old mine, located in the coal fields of southern Illinois, has remained one of the state's oldest continuously operating mines by rolling with the ups and downs of the coal market and by incorporating new technologies and innovative productivity improvements into its operation.

"Basal till sampling techniques were used to search for gold mineralization in the Timmins, Ontario area. During 1978 and 1979, approximately 90 overburden sampling drill holes were completed in Murphy and Hoyle Townships to test specific geophysically defined target areas. A conventional tricone dual tube drill system, and a unique retractable tricone/rock coring system were used to various advantages.First pass till sampling at 800 to 1200 ft intervals perpendicular to ice transport direction yielded anomalous gold values in till and carbonatized quartz pyrite-rich bedrock chips, and lateritic soil. Subsequent induced polarization-resistivity surveys defined the areal extent of a pyritic carbonate alteration zone. A second pass till sampling/limited rock coring program evaluated the gold mineralization potential of the alteration zone. Diamond drilling has substantiated the till and bedrock gold anomalies. Further evaluation of this mineralization is currently in progress. IntroductionThis paper describes an integrated geochemical/geophysical gold mineralization discovery case history in Hoyle Township. This discovery is on a property jointly owned (I983) by Canamax Resources Inc. and Du Pont of Canada Exploration Limited. Exploration of the property began in 1978 by Rosario Resources Canada Ltd. and in 1979 a joint venture agreement was signed with Du Pont of Canada Exploration Limited. Rosario Resources Canada Ltd. was taken over by Amax Minerals Exploration in 1981, which became Canamax Resources Inc. in 1982.The work described in this paper deals with a gold mineralization discovery located three-quarters of a mile northwest of the gold deposit currently being readied for underground exploration and development. Further drilling is required to investigate the economic potential of the gold mineralization herein described."

The iron ore deposits of the Port Hedland district of North Western Australia are associated with band'ed sedimentary iron formations that form part of the local succession of folded and faulted Archaean volcanic and sedimentary rocks. The iron formations are regarded as the protore beds or sources of the iron which became concentrated by supergene processes to form commercial grade iron ore deposits.Iron oxide deposits occurring in situ within the protore beds are considered to be of residual-replacement origin, due to supergene leaching of gangue minerals and' deposition of secondary iron oxides in their place, Two types of deposit have been recognized. Lode deposits are deep lenses of massive hematite located adjacent to major faults. These deposits are thought to be very old and to have originated by supergene processes during the long period of erosion represented by the major unconformity between the Archaean rocks and the overlying Proterozoic beds. The other type, known as crust ore deposits, are shallow cappings of hematite and goethite on hills formed by the outcrops of steeply dipping protore beds. These deposits could have originated as far back as the early Mesozoic and it is possible that the ore-forming process is continuing at a slow rate at the present day.Deposits formed by erosion and re-deposition of material derived from pre-existing residual-type deposits are known as derived deposits. These include conglomerates and scree accumulations of various types and ages and pisolitic deposits formed by supergene leaching of transported detritus. Derived deposits range in age from early Proterozoic to Recent. The introduction of mechanized mining in coal mines, which has speeded loading, has emphasized the importance of efficient underground transportation systems. The purpose of this investigation is to study and analyze various systems now in use, and to derive conclusions therefrom. This report may be helpful to operators who are planning new systems of transportation or who are revising present systems to increase their efficiency. This paper is the first of a series on this subject and describes some systems of transportation utilizing rail haulage. ACKNOWLEDGMENT The information used in preparing this report was obtained through the courtesy and cooperation of the officials of the companies whose mines were studied. The descriptions of the transportation systems at the mines included herein have been checked for accuracy, and publication of the data has been approved by the executives of the several operating companies.

Diagnostic: tests were performed on a production ST-5A Load-Haul-Dump machine manufactured by Wagner Mining Machinery Company to evaluate and rank order noise sources. The diagnostic evaluation indicated that the major noise sources were the transmission, the engine, and the cooling fan. This phase was followed by implementation of recommended noise control treatments, which included vibration isolation of the transmission, a transmission enclosure, an engine enclosure, and modifications of the inlet to the cooling fan. The final step in the program was an underground operational period which began on 31 August 1976 at the National Gypsum Mine in Shoals, Indiana. The noise control treatments successfully reduced the LHD operator noise exposure by 7 dB(A), thus increasing its allowable operation time by a factor of 2.7. Actual measurements made underground using noise dosimeters have indicated that, during, a typical shift, the noise control treatments have reduced the fractional exposure to an allowable level. The report discusses the mechanical aspects of the LHD, its noise sources, the treatments applied, the final levels achieved, and field experience with the noise-controlled machine.

Partition curves are used to evaluate the separation performance of gravity-based concentrators. The partition curve is used to identify the nominal density cutpoint and relative sharpness of the separation. In addition, the graphical representation makes it possible to quickly identify the root cause of misplacement based on the characteristic shape of the partition curve. Partition curves have been traditionally constructed using data obtained from float-sink tests using heavy organic liquids. These toxic liquids are environmentally unfriendly and have been banned in several countries. Another method of establishing the partition curve is to introduce density tracers into the feed and plot the distribution to the lights and heavies. For heavy mineral separations, this approach is generally impractical due to the fine particle size. In addition, the partition data obtained using these existing techniques do not account for secondary factors such as particle shape that may influence the separation. In light of these problems, a methodology was developed for constructing partition curves using experimental data obtained from microscopic grain-counts. This technique, which essentially uses the different mineral species as density tracers, provides a powerful tool for evaluating heavy mineral separations. A case study is provided to demonstrate how this analytical approach can be used to assess and improve the separaton performance in an industrial upgrade plant.

The purpose of this report is to describe the work accomplished by Mine Safety Appliances Company under Contract No. H0110845. This contract required the design, installation and testing of a permissible mine surveillance and communication system for the USBM Bruceton experimental mine facility. While much of the design and operational detail of this system can be drawn from the instruction manuals delivered with the equipment, some of it will be repeated here in Volume I for the sake of clarity, but the principal objective will be to report on overall system and subsystem performance and to suggest design alternatives for future consideration. Details of the overall system design will be found in Volume II of this report.

A common problem recently encountered with the increase in the rate of input feed at Enrichment Plant 2 of the Sarcheshmeh Copper Complex is the loss of value to the tails, translating to lower recoveries. The feasibility of the direct transfer of part of the high-grade concentrate from rougher stages to an appropriate position along the circuit was studied, and two positions were proposed for direct transfer of the concentrate. One position was the feed flow into cleaner cells, and the other was the feed flow into the recleaner cell. The results indicated that transferring the concentrate from the first unit of the rougher stage to the feed flow into the cleaner cells was feasible, with no limitations, while the second position required the installation of a set of hydrocyclones. It was found that the transfer of concentrate to the proposed positions not only addressed the problem of limited cell capacity, resulting in debottlenecking of the circuit, but also improved metallurgical separation efficiency up to 1.4%.

The upswing in prices for base and precious metals, industrial minerals and coal has allowed the global mining industry to ramp up production at existing mines and begin construction of proposed projects. In addition to satisfying shareholders, the industry is also providing good paying jobs and creating needed infra-structure in places that previously did not have either. However, the industry has learned that the prospect of jobs and infrastructure is not necessarily a guarantee that communities will allow mines to be built. The industry must maintain even higher environmental and reclamation standards. And mining companies must help communities plan for life after a mine is closed and the company moves out.

Longwall mining alters the fluid-flow-related reservoir properties of the rocks overlying and underlying an extracted panel due to fracturing and relaxation of the strata. These mining-related disturbances create new pressure depletion zones and new flow paths for gas migration and may cause unexpected or uncontrolled migration of gas into the underground workplace. One common technique to control methane emissions in longwall mines is to drill vertical gob gas vent holes into each longwall panel to capture the methane within the overlying fractured strata before it enters the work environment. Thus, it is important to optimize the well parameters, e.g., the borehole diameter, and the length and position of the slotted casing interval relative to the fractured gas-bearing zones. This paper presents the development and results of a comprehensive, "dynamic," three-dimensional reservoir model of a typical multipanel Pittsburgh coalbed longwall mine. The alteration of permeability fields in and above the panels as a result of the mining- induced disturbances has been estimated from mechanical modeling of the overlying rock mass. Model calibration was performed through history matching the gas production from gob gas ventholes in the study area. Results presented in this paper include a simulation of gas flow patterns from the gas-bearing zones in the overlying strata to the mine environment, as well as the influence of completion practices on optimizing gas production from gob gas ventholes.

Output of mineral products was estimated to be unchanged in 1983 from that of 1982 with the exception of petroleum. The country began production of crude oil from the Seme Oilfield, and all output was exported. Wd and charcoal constituted 72% of Benin's total energy consumption, and imported petroleum products and electric power accounted for the remainder. Cement was produced from imported clinker. The gross domestic product (GDP) was $1,061 million in 1982, the latest year for which information was available.2 COMMODITY REVIEW Gold.-Exploration was underway at Perma by the U.S.S.R. as part of the United Nations development program. Gold had been produced previously at Perma, where a grade of 0.289 troy ounce of gold per ton was reported, An exploitation program for the deposit was to employ about 100 people, and output was targeted to reach 1,600 troy ounces per year. Recoverable reserves were put at 96,000 troy ounces.

This paper discusses the design, construction, and performance of the support of excavation system used at The Atlantic Building jobsite. The support of excavation system had to be adaptable to the different conditions surrounding the site. These conditions included support of four historic building façades, including the nine-story Atlantic Building, as well as support of three historic row-houses along two walls. Directly adjacent to the site is the historic Ford?s Theatre and townhouse. Across a 15? alley is the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) Building, and across a 30? alley is the Federal Election Commission Building and another ongoing excavation. Of historical note, these two alleys were the escape route for John Wilkes Booth following his assassination of President Lincoln. With the excavation being 53? to 58? deep, the system included driven and drilled soldier piles, drilled bracket piles, and two modified tangent walls. The bracing included tiebacks, corner braces, wales, cross lot struts, and a specially designed support system for the nine-story façade. The footprint of the excavation included 12 corners and all alleys and streets were to remain open during construction. The performance requirements for system movement at Ford?s Theatre and AILA Building were ½ inches in the horizontal direction. The modified tangent walls were used in these areas to provide stiffness. The soil conditions at the site were fill material on top of a shallow, sandy, silty, gravel layer on top of a deep layer of soft organic silt and clay. Below the silt and clay layer was fine sandy material at the subgrade.

This report presents a programme of work to demonstrate the use of a surface-based centralised computer control system for the remote monitoring and control of underground conveyors in a US coal mine. The system selected for demonstration was the 'Dynalink' Micro MINOS system which is manufactured by Hawker Siddeley Dynamics Engineering Limited. The site selected was Barnes S Tucker Lancashire No. 20 Mine located near Carrolltown, Cambria County, Pennsylvania. The system concept, operating and application software was designed and developed by the. British National Coal Board. The report describes the selection of the site, specification of the system requirements, commissioning, operation and evaluation of the system under typical US mine operating conditions. Experience with the system, based primarily on the system reliability and performance of conveyor control, was favourable. Mine management personnel felt that the system had successfully achieved its objectives and were keen to expand monitoring and control to other activities.

The Western Australian School of Mines (WASM) has developed a facility for the static testing of large scale ground support elements. The samples are loaded using a mechanical screw feed jack. Instruments measure the displacement and the load being applied. Methods have been developed for testing of mesh, shotcrete and membranes. Mesh samples are restrained on all sides and loaded centrally. A new large scale punch test method has been developed to evaluate shotcrete and membranes. These products are sprayed on to a sandstone substrate containing a centrally located isolated disc. The sprayed product is loaded by displacing the disk. The different test methods are described in detail. The test program involved two types of mesh, several shotcrete mix designs with different curing times and one membrane product. The force-displacement responses are used to directly compare the products. The implications for implementation of the different ground support products are discussed.

"Sediments in the vicinity of the hydrothermal seafloor massive sulphide (SMS) mounds are characterized by high concentration of metallic particles. They result from a long process of weathering of the primary mineral deposits and have been accumulated in depressions by mass wasting and hydrothermal plume fall-out. We present here the first results obtained on pore waters analyses of such sediments in distinct geological seafloor environments (in low-temperature hydrothermally active zones, on extinct hydrothermal mounds and in a remote depositional channel). Vertical concentration profiles suggest that the pore fluid composition is affected more by seawater circulation compared with hydrothermal fluid flow in all environments. The composition of pore fluids is affected by diagenesis and redox processes in the distal depositional channel where Mn2+ is released at depth with Cu2+.IntroductionMarine hydrothermal fields, hosting seafloor massive sulphides, are potential resources for future deep-sea mining and might become economic reserves for the industries. They are widespread at mid-oceanic ridges, arcs and back-arc spreading centers (Hannington et al., 2011; German et al., 2016). Sediments in the vicinity of these fields can contain unusually high concentration of Fe, Mn, Zn and Cu among other metal elements (Shearme et al., 1983). These hydrothermal, or metalliferous, sediments result from a combination of processes such as collapsing and weathering of chimney material, filling of the channels by turbidite-like mass wasting, in situ authigenic mineralization and hydrothermal plume fall-out (Goulding et al., 1998; German et al., 1990). The sediments contain important indicators reflecting the development of the hydrothermal systems. Because of their widespread distribution and metal content, they themselves can be considered potential mineral resources. Circulation of seawater through these deposits, however, often modifies the sediment composition by oxidizing the sulphides into oxyhydroxides and clays causing mobilization of the metals. To address the importance of alteration and diagenesis of these hydrothermal sediments, including the result of seawater circulation, we investigated the post-depositional processes occurring in the hydrothermal sediments at the TAG Hydrothermal Field (Mid-Atlantic Ridge, 26°N), focusing on the mobility of metallic cations in a number of different seafloor environments."

The portal, which is the near-horizontal, surface point of entry to an underground excavation, can often be an exceedingly difficult area in terms of ground control. Surface and subsurface failures at portals, as discerned during a study involving over 300 case histories, are unfortunately, common. To aid in the engineering evaluation of portals, the Geomechanics Classification System was appended with discontinuity orientation assessment values and support/excavation guidelines. Also, a design model utilizing RMR predicted rock loads in conjunction with half-dome theory is proposed for the most common type of portal failure. Other pertinent comments and recommendations relating to portal stability are included.

The mines and the mill of the Nevada-Massachusetts Co. are on the east slope of the Eugene Mountains, in Pershing County, Nevada, 8 miles northwest of Mill City, a station on the Southern Pacific R.R. and on the Victory Highway. Fig. 1. Supplies and, concentrate are transported by truck over an automobile road of easy grade. The property is at an average elevation of 5500 ft. and climatic conditions are generally favorable for continuous operation throughout the year. The ore treated is supplied by two adjoining mines, the Stank and the Humboldt. Physical and mineral characteristics of the ores produced by these two mines are substantially similar, although variations occur in hardness and mineral distribution.' The economic mineral is scheelite (CaWO4), composed, when pure, of 80.6 per cent tungstic trioxide (WO3) and 19.4 per cent lime (CaO).

Mill log analyses and complementary hot deformation studies were carried out on the as-cast structure and on a hot rolled structure of the same low carbon steel (SAE 1006) that had been processed according to the direct or hot charge route in a compact strip plant. The main softening mechanisms during hot rolling were found to be complete dynamic recrystallization during each pass above about 1000°C for the as-cast structure with an austenite grain size of 277µm and, secondly, incomplete static recrystallization after each pass with a finer austenite grain size of about 26 µm and tested below 1000°C. A two-stage hot working mechanism has also been found by others on a similar steel also processed by the hot charge route and this may appear to be a characteristic of this type of material. Constitutive constants determined from hot working studies were combined with other constants from the literature and incorporated into a grain size development model that correctly predicts the final ferrite grain size in the hot rolled strip steel. The predicted incomplete static recrystallization during the last three finishing passes in the plant appears to result in some retained strain in the hot rolled austenite as it transforms to ferrite on the run-out table. Analyses with the model predict relatively little sensitivity of the final ferrite grain size to process and product variables such as temperature and strain per pass for the last three passes and also the starting austenite grain size in the slab. Over the years as surface mining operations have become more sophisticated, angle drilling has become a more popular blast design technique, especially in areas where overburden and stripping ratios have increased. Another method of blast design is the staggered pattern, which greatly improves explosives distribution within the blast. While both methods present some engineering challenges, this paper will discuss how the two methods can be combined to enhance fragmentation, improve cast percentage, drill production ratios and highwall control. A practical engineering approach will be presented as well as a discussion on the discipline required to maintain a quality blasting plan.

EARLY in 1949, the Economic Cooperation Administration requested the Bureau of Mines to assign a coal-mining engineer to study milling conditions in Greek lignite mines; to make recommendations for the introduction of methods and practices that should increase production and decrease the cost of mining; and, from the results of a geological reconnaissance by geologists of the United States Geological Survey, to suggest plans for the development of mines to supply fuel for a thermal power plant, Albert L. Toenges was assigned to this investigation and arrived in Athens, Greece, March 15, 1949. The study of mining operations and the geological reconnaissance (which was made by W. G. Pierce and X. M. Denson, geologists, United States Geological Survey) Were conducted concurrently. The Geological Survey will publish the results of its investigation separately. Washability studies of lignites from Aliveri and Kimi were made at the Central Experiment Station of the Bureau of -Mines, Pittsburgh, Pa. The lignite fields mentioned in this bulletin are shown in figure 1.
