A general description of the activities and results of bauxite investigation by the Bureau of Mines at its bauxite project in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Ark., has been given in Report of Investigations 4251. The tactual data obtained during the project are reported in a series of Reports of Investigations beginning with No. 4251, of which this is the twelfth. The data are accompanied by maps showing the location of holes drilled and the deposits developed. Each area upon which work was done is reported by half townships. Each bauxite deposit investigated was assigned a name and a number for ready reference and identification, and its location and name are shown on the appropriate halt-township map. The description of each half township is followed by a description of each deposit developed in that halt township. The 14 half-township maps and 77 detail maps of the bauxite deposits in this series of reports give the locations and numbers of all the holes drilled on the project except the deep holes drilled to test the geophysical anomalies. The locations of those holes show on figure 13 in volume 1. The descriptions of the deposits developed are followed by complete detailed logs of the drill holes. Many of the widely spaced exploratory holes did not discover bauxite of minable thickness and grade. The pertinent information obtained from the widely spaced exploratory drill holes has been summarized and tabulated, and a table for each half township is given with the discussion covering that area.

Between 1966 and 1976, Australia moved from being a non-producer to a position of meeting more than ten per cent of world nickel demand. New mine developments beginning the early-1990s have the promise of more than doubling the country's world market share - from around eight per cent to perhaps close to 20 per cent. This new surge in activity - the so-called `second nickel boom' - has led to several developments which seem likely to have similar economic impacts to those of the late- 1960s and early-1970s. There are, however, some notable differences this time around. The impact of long distance commuting over the past 30 years has changed the regional development scenario. The gold industry is much stronger in Australia than it was in the late-1960s and this helps to place the importance of new nickel discoveries in a more realistic perspective. As potential players have jockeyed to complete feasibility studies and move into construction and production phases of new long-life mines, established suppliers clearly seem to be taking actions to discourage the newcomers. In what appears to be a classic oligipolistic market situation, the heightening of perceived entry barriers to the industry appears to be a particularly visible strategy undertaken. In the current scenario as well, greater vertical integration among producers appears a significant influence on market power.

It is crucial to record ground movement of any magnitude to enable the safe and economical design of excavations and infrastructure. The DigiMine Laboratory is equipped with technologies to record such movements. This paper analyses the effectiveness of the Digital Mine instrumentation in recording earth movements in light of the Botswanan earthquake which occurred on the 3rd of April 2017 at 17:40 UTC. Recordings from the Digital Mine are compared with other ground sensing technologies which also captured the event (USGS and GEOFON systems). USGS and GEOFON system’s recordings suggest that, there are a number of possible mechanisms that could have resulted in the earthquake as discussed in the paper. Compared to the USGS and GEOFON systems, DigiMine system could not provide an analysis that could give possible source mechanisms. However, the system’s success in recording the Botswanan earthquake, is an indication that the system works and can be further developed or improved. For a comprehensive analysis, more data from various sensors needs to be collected. For example, DigiMine connecting to the national seismic monitoring system or to the local mine’s seismic monitoring system. Such connections will enable the development of a better self-analysis system and possibly prediction of future events. Reconciliation at large iron ore operations is a complex and time- consuming process. Often the volume of data and the large range of different stakeholders makes the process almost impossible. Up until recently geologists and engineers at these operations would spend hours cutting and pasting data in and out of monster spreadsheets, diligently comparing how resource/reserve models, grade control and survey pick-ups compare to what was actually produced. In 2003 the Sishen Iron Ore Mine in South Africa broke this cycle by implementing SnowdenÆs Reconcilor software. The implementation of a dedicated reconciliation system required a number of existing practices to be changed, with the involvement of stakeholders right across the mine. Data sources had to be clarified and validated, terminology had to be standardised, processes needed to be documented and some methodologies needed to be updated. This was a task that required significant effort by Kumba personnel so that the system could be successfully implemented. This paper provides a case study of the reconciliation system implementation at Sishen. It is a story of an operation that evolved from using a number of fragmented reconciliation processes to using a unified automated system. This paper outlines the key estimates and measurements that are used for reconciliation, details the characteristics of an automated web-based information management system to facilitate the process and provides some insights about the benefits that have been gained though the use of a rigorous reconciliation process.

THANKS to the excellent preliminary work of: the Division officers and the local committee the fall meeting of the Coal Division at Bluefields was a brilliant success. West Virginia was at its best with its beautiful mountains, good roads and foliage, just beginning to turn to autumn colors. The meeting began on time and was kept on time throughout. The papers were-well prepared and, being on subjects of live interest, provoked 'lively discussion. One factor in bringing this about was that they were not too numerous and that with one exception copies had been submitted in advance a sufficient time to permit of them having been studied. The Friday morning session was presided over by John .J. Lincoln of the Crozier Coal and Coke Co. and president of the Pocahontas Coal Operators Association. After brief announcements by Thomas H. Clagett, chairman of the local committee, regarding plans for the two day's involved, and by Howard N. Eavenson, chairman of the Division, the reading of papers was taken up.

This report provides background information concerning a mine roof simulator currently being considered by the Bureau of Mines. The simulator is a mechanical device with the ability to simulate the forces and displacements associated with mine roof over an area 20 by 20 feet. The topics covered in the report include a conceptual description of the system, definition of system capabilities, discussion of how such capabilities were decided upon, description of available control modes, and a comparison between the mine roof simulator facility and similar facilities existing elsewhere.

Agglomeration developments in the iron ore industry of North America are closely related to shifting patterns in commercially acceptable ore grades and even the definition of iron ores. These relationships have occurred mainly during the last 20 years. Many of these changes are an outgrowth of events which involved the history of the Mesabi Range. Although magnetic taconites had been discovered in the Lake Superior area about 1870, they remained unvrorked in part for lack of concentration methods and a generally unfavorable economic climate. Some 20 years later the rich Mesabi hematites were found beginning the era of direct shipping ores which continued through World War II. These Lake Superior iron ores included reserves of an estimated three billion tons. Following World War II, decreasing ore grades and rising costs began to force the closing of many underground iron mines. The early 50's saw the beginning of the decline in direct shipping ores and a spurt in produc- tion of natural iron concentrates. However, the market for unprocessed concentrates began to decline in the early 60's as agglomerated products and foreign ore s began to dominate the U. S. market.

The work has shown that packed-bed behaviour can be predicted from the results of single-particle experiments, total reaction times being predicted somewhat more accurately than gas and solid temperatures and gas compositions. A small laboratory packed-bed reactor was built and used to study the decomposition of beds of specially prepared CaCO3 spheres, steps being taken to minimise the effects exerted by the walls of the bed on processes occurring within the bed. Gas and solid temperatures and gas compositions were measured at various points in the bed and compared with theoretical predictions based on kinetic data determined in previous single-particle experiments. The measured solid temperatures and total reaction times agreed remarkably well with the values predicted theoretically. Gas and solid temperatures measured after the reaction had finished at any point in the bed did not agree with the theory. This was because solid temperatures in the bed rose very rapidly once the reaction was completed and the walls of the bed could not be heated at a sufficient rate for their temperatures to rise as rapidly; thus some loss of heat from the bed to the walls was inevitable, and this could not be accounted for in the theory. In addition, the theory did not allow for the conduction of heat within the bed, and this resulted in some further slight discrepancy between the measured and predicted values, particularly after the reaction was completed. Gas compositions measured in the bed were rather scattered, but, even so, they agreed moderately well with the predictions of the theory.

"The primary objective of this research project is to study the character of the bit-coal interaction during coal cutting and its influence on the size and shape distributions of the generated dust. Secondary objectives include the investigation of the acoustic emission technique as an indirect method for coal dust characterization and remote bit wear monitoring. The results of the project will be useful in developing efficient coal cutting techniques which significantly reduce the harmful coal dust components, and in providing methods for remote monitoring of bit condition and associated coal dust character. This paper will outline recent experiments carried out on coal under uniaxial compression, linear single-bit cutting, and cutting using a laboratory-scale, single-bit shearer. During the experiments acoustic emission and a variety of other mechanical parameters were monitored. · A commercially available artificial intelligence computer package, namely: JCEPAK (Intelligent Classifier Engineering Package), has been utilized to provide a powerful and objective means for AE waveform analysis. This program is able to evaluate a number of features of each AE event and to make objective comparisons between AE signals associated with different loading or cutting parameters. Finally, the paper will discuss the results obtained from a variety of coal breakage tests.INTRODUCTIONStudies to date clearly indicate that the reduction of the severity, and eventual elimination, of Coal Workers' Pneumoconiosis (CWP) depends on gaining fundamental understanding in a number of major areas. These include dust generation and entrainment, transportation, suppression, medical effects of dust and possible treatment. At present a project is underway by the authors to investigate the character of the bit-coal interaction during coal cutting and its influence on the size and shape distributions of the generated dust. An important aspect of this on-going project is the development of acoustic emission (AE) criteria which will make it possible to carry out remote monitoring of coal cutting operations. Suitable on-line analysis of monitored AE data would allow engineers to evaluate factors such as shearer bit condition and cutting efficiency, and to quantify the particle size and shape distribution of the generated dust. The on-going AE studies are fundamental in form and were undertaken to evaluate the general feasibility of AE monitoring techniques using simplified coal cutting procedures. This paper will outline recent experiments on coal under uniaxial compression, linear single-bit cutting, and cutting using a laboratory-scale, single-bit shearer. THIS paper gives the results of an investigation of the behavior of the argentiferous cobalt-nickel arsenides of Temiskaming, Ontario, in roasting, made in the metallurgical laboratories of the School of Mines, of Columbia University in the City of New York. The ore was kindly given by the owners of the La Rose and Trethewey properties at Cobalt, Ontario, and Mr. E. J. Hall, Tutor in Assaying in Columbia University, has helped us much. I. OBJECT OF THE INVESTIGATION. The object of the investigation was to learn:- 1. The temperature at which the arsenic is most rapidly expelled; 2. The thoroughness with which it is expelled by prolonged roasting at this temperature; 3. The effect of adding charcoal (a) near the end of the roast and (b) at the beginning of the roast. II. NATURE OF THE ORE. The important ores mined in the Temiskaming deposits are native silver-with small amounts of dyscrasite (Ag6 Sb), argentite (Ag2S), pyrargyrite (Ag3SbS3)-smaltite (CoAs2), chloanthite (NiAs2) and niccolite (NiAs). Mispickel (FeAsS) and cobaltite (CoAsS) also occur in smaller quantities. The average composition of the ore shipped from this district for the first six months of 1905 -was: silver, from 4.1 to 4.8 per cent.; cobalt, from 6.9 to 8.2 per cent ; nickel, from 3 to 4.7 per cent ; and arsenic, from 30.9 to 34.6 per cent. "The size distributions of carefully screened 2 size fractions of ground materials were determined using a Microtrac laser dif-fractometer. The size distributions were fitted to the empirical function P(x) = 1/[1 + (x50/x)1] where P(x) is cumulative mass fraction less than Microtrac size, x. The standard deviation of A for a 50 second test time was approximately 0.5, so that seventeen test times give a mean with an estimated error within t 0.25 (95% confidence level). Values of were 5.44, 4.82, 4.40 for a coal ground under different conditions, indicating statistically different shape distributions; the average value for mica was 2.91 owing to the high aspect ratio of the particles. The ratio of x50 to the geometric mean sieve size was 1.2 for the coal and 0.70 for mica.1 IntroductionKoka and Trass have presented evidence [1,2] that materials ground in the Szego mill [3] give different shapes depending on the milling conditions. The variations in shape were deduced qualitatively by viewing SEM photomicrographs of selected 1/2 screen fractions. This paper quantifies their observed differences in shape by using measurements of the size distributions of screen fractions examined in a laser diffractometer [4] (Microtrac, Model 7991). The basic concept is that particles of 'a given ""screen"" size will give a wider distribution of ""Microtrac"" size when the particles are flaky with high aspect ratios, and a narrower distribution when the particles approach the cubical and spherical geometries.2 TheoryAustin and Shah [5] have shown that coal screened within a 1. 1/2 upper-to-lower sieve size range will give rise to a much wider distribution of Microtrac size. This paper presents the implementation of a digital twin for the vibro-replacement ground improvement process, as part of a digital construction site. The goal is to implement an evidence-based quality assurance for each produced element (column or point). The system uses a combination of planning data and real-time machine data collected automatically from construction equipment. In addition to the quality assurance, feedback is provided in a number of areas, e.g., condition monitoring of the equipment. The digital twin builds upon the real-time sensor and machine data, fused with metadata, to implement a digital model for the process. A hierarchical data evaluation, using rule-based Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), permits viewing of the spatial variation of data over the construction site. This permits the modelling of systematic variations in subsurface properties across the site, enabling the detection of anomalous individual elements, the diagnosis of their cause and the prediction of properties as construction proceeds over the site. All time-series data and KPIs are represented by standard classes of objects, leading to a generic coding of the data analysis; this minimizes the effort required to add additional sites and/or new KPIs. Examples are presented for a number of sites, where the system was used to identify anomalous columns.

"The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting research on jackleg use and related accidents in underground metal mines. This paper provides an analysis and overview of jackleg drill usage, accidents, operational characteristics and alternatives, based on information from injury reports, legacy research, stakeholder input and published literature. The results indicate that jackleg drills are involved in more groundfall accidents in underground metal mines than any other drill, and jackleg-drill-related injuries are most prevalent at the face in the course of installing initial ground support. Practical mechanized alternatives to jackleg drills for drilling and bolting under incomplete support in narrow underground openings have not yet been realized. Small, versatile mechanized bolting equipment needs to be developed to address jackleg-drill-related accidents and improve safety at mines where jackleg drills are being used. IntroductionJackleg drill is a generic name for a handheld, rotary, percussion rock drill equipped with an attached reaction leg to provide stability and thrust (Fig. 1). All of the drill and leg controls are located near the operator’s handle at the rear of the head portion of the drill. Jackleg drills are classified according to the bore size of their pneumatic pistons, which normally range from 6.03 to 8.26 cm (2.375 to 3.25 in.) (Kurt, 1982; Clark, 2012). Jackleg drills typically weigh 46.7 kg (103 lb), but the weight can approach 54.4 kg (120 lb) after being fitted for operation with drill steel and air and water hoses (McKibbin and Clark, 2001). In underground mines, jackleg drills are commonly used to drill 3.8-cm (1.5-in.) diameter holes up to 1.83 m (6 ft) deep in rock."

THe Pocahontas district occupies the extreme southern end of West Virginia, principally McDowell, Mercer and Wyoming counties, and a part of Tazewell county, in southwestern Virginia. The first record of the coal field is a report by Prof. J. P. Lesley, of Pennsylvania, about 1880, in which he mentions a coal opening at the upper end of Abbs Valley, Tazewell county, Va. C. R. Boyd, a mining engineer of Wytheville, Va., published a series of articles in 1881, mentioning coal on Indian Creek, Tazewell county, and on Horse Pen creek, which coals, he stated, extended toward the Ohio River. He also mentions the Abbs Valley coal reported by Lesley. In 1881, F. J. Kimball (who became president of the Norfolk & Western R. R. in 1883)) after examining the Scott mine in Abbs Valley, went northward across Abbs Valley Mountain to the place now known as Pocahontas, where he located what has since been called No. 3 vein of Pocahontas coal. In November, 1882, Jed Hotchkiss and others prepared a cross-section of the Flat Top Mountain coal measures, some notes on which were published by Mr. Hotchkiss, between 1880 and 1892, under the title of " The Virginias.' In May, 1881, the Norfolk & Western R. R. was organized through the purchase of the Atlantic, Mississippi & Ohio R. R., an old line running from Norfolk, Va., to Bristol, Tenn., with branches from Petersburg to City Point and from Glade Springs to Saltville. At that time, charters had been granted for three railroads tributary to the New River Valley, but their proposed routes would indicate that the promoters were concerned with minerals, timber, and a connection with the Chesapeake & Ohio R. R., rather than the development of any coal in the Pocahontas district. One of them was projected to extend up Bluestone River a short distance, but not far enough to reach the coal in the Bluestone Valley, and a little grading was done for a narrow-gage road between New River Station and a point in Giles county, Virginia, near the West Virginia line. All charters and railroads in this district were acquired by the Norfolk & Western R.R.

The Geomechanics Classification (Bieniawski, 1979) was modified for entry and roof support design in underground room-and-pillar coal mines. Adjustment multipliers were introduced to incorporate the influence of strata weatherability, high horizontal stresses, and the roof support reinforcement factor into the existing classification system. Sixty-two case histories of both standing and fallen mine roof were collected from two mines in the northern Appalachian coalfield. Twenty-seven engineering and geologic parameters were recorded for each case. A partial correlation analysis was carried out on the cases to establish which parameters have a significant impact upon the supported stand-up time of coal mine roof. Survival analysis, a statistical technique used in medical research to assess the effect of a drug or treatment on a patient's life expectancy, was conducted together with stepwise multiple regression to derive values for the adjustment multipliers. A practical example is included to illustrate the application of the modified Geomechanics Classification to underground coal mine design.

La cianuración es un proceso hidrometalúrgico basado en la utilización de soluciones de cianuros alcalinos como medio químico para lixiviar el oro y la plata contenidos en menas auríferas/argentíferas. Los cianuros más importantes que se usan en este procedimiento son el de potasio y el de sodio. El presente documento detalla las pruebas de lixiviación con un reactivo alterno al cianuro de sodio considerando las diversas características mineralógicas del mineral que se procesa en la Planta.

This report is based on data collected in and about the Liberty mine of the Liberty Fuel Co. by D. J. Parker and W. W. Kessler on December 13 and 14, 1933. An important phase of an examination to determine the general condition of a mine with respect to safety is the collection of dust samples from rock- dusted areas. Definite conclusions, based on intelligent interpretation of the analyses of such samples, can be reached only when the general condition of the mine is known. A similar examination and report were made on this property in January 1930 by D. J. Parker and R. I. C. Manning. Since that time much has been done by the management to improve safety conditions in this mine. The changes made will be noted in the course of this report. The mine is in Spring Canyon at Latuda, Carbon County, Utah, and is served by a branch line of the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad about 7 miles long and connecting to the main line near Helper, Utah. The writer desires to express his sincere appreciation for the many courtesies and helpful cooperation extended by Superintendent George Schultz and Mine Foreman F. W. Koelling.

BHP Billiton Iron Ore is one of the world’s premier suppliers of iron ore. It currently has operations in Western Australia and Brazil and also has some iron ore interests in West Africa.BHP Billiton’s Optimisation R&D team has developed a proprietary mine planning optimisation tool that uses a mixed integer linear programming (MILP). This tool is called Blasor and it is used to rapidly evaluate the resource development potential (RDP) scenarios for the company’s business development strategy. In addition it generates life of asset (LOA) mine plans for the company’s operations and growth projects. The Blasor optimiser maximises the discounted operating cash fl ow (DCF) as the objective function, subject to mining, processing and transportation capacity constraints and blended product quality constraints. The paper will outline how Blasor has been applied to the resource development potential (RDP) strategy scenario studies, growth project evaluations and LOA mine planning within BHP Billiton Iron Ore.The practical application of Blasor to resource planning optimisation within BHP Billiton Iron Ore has demonstrated the value of such a tool for optimising strategic directions through the evaluation of a number of carefully proposed scenarios and maximisation of operational decisions, such as cut-off grade, open pit development sequence, etc. Particularly for the company’s business development direction studies, Blasor plays the role of a fair valuation tool in that it discovers the most valuable resource development scenario, thus establishing a sound basis for comparing the economic merits of each scenario.

This Bureau of Mines publication describes the plan used to instrument two longwall gateroads at the Powhatan No. 4 Mine of the Quarto Mining Co. Vibrating wire stressmeters, flat jack U-cells, multipoint extensometer stations, and convergence stations were installed in or on the coal pillars, roof bolts, and roof strata of the gateroad entries. The instruments measure pillar stresses, bolt loadings, and strata movements as the gateroad entries are developed and the longwall panel(s) is mined. The report details only the instrumentation plan of the longwall gateroads and not the evaluation of any subsequent data. This is because a complete analy-sis of the data cannot be made until extraction of the longwall panel(s) is complete.
