The Top End of the Northern Territory lies in the monsoonal zone and receives rain during the November-April period. Initially, at the start of the wet season, rain storms are localised, but, following the descent of the monsoonal trough from below the equator, widespread rain occurs. Overflow incidents at mine sites tend to arise midway through the annual wet season when excess water accumulated in ponds begins to discharge to the external environment. Remote-access monitoring may be undertaken at mine sites using equipment to continuously measure water quality parameters with storage of the information on a data logger. The data is then retrieved by visiting the site and transferring it to a portable computer or by remotely accessing the system using a telemetry system and transmission via telephone, VHF/UHF or satellite. Such systems are readily available and vary in cost depending on the sophistication of the data transfer system. Available sensors for continuous monitoring include those for conductivity, temperature, pH and other ion selective electrodes, eg nitrate, and water level. Of these variables, conductivity is most useful due to its inherent accuracy and stability of reading. Remote monitoring capability is able to provide: (i) more intensive monitoring of key issues; (ii) more timely information; (iii) correct perspective on the degree of environmental problem; and (iv) information from remote locations, which would be difficult to monitor by more conventional methods. Examples are given for applications of continuously logged measurement of conductivity of waters discharging to drains and in creeks at Pine Creek, Ranger, Nabarlek and Woodcutters mines in the Northern Territory. These applications demonstrate the timeliness of the continuous monitoring technique.

The Carson-Iceberg RARE II study area, consisting o; 209,990 acres (134,983 ha), is on the crest of the Sierra Nevada in California, about 35 mi (56 km) south of Lake Tahoe. The area is divided into four parts: C4-986; C5-986; and B5-986, north and south portions. No mineral production has been recorded for the area. However, gold, silver, and tungsten resources and potential for additional resources have been estimated for the area and just north of area C4-986.

The investigations described in this report were undertaken to demonstrate, on a laboratory scale, the possibility of recovering several million pounds of tin plus tungsten contained in stockpiled and currently rejected slags from the Longhorn tin smelter at Texas City, Tex. At the same time, it was anticipated that the treatment procedures developed might be applicable to slags from other tin-smelting operations. Results of the laboratory work show that it is possible, by pyrometallurgical means, to separate the tin and tungsten into products of intermediate grade that may be returned to the smelter circuits for further upgrading. Several methods of treatment were investigated. The methods that proved effective were: Fusion reduction, chloride volatilization, sulfide volatilization, and carbide formation. Over 90 percent of the tin and tungsten could be removed from the slat by any of these methods. Each type of treatment has advantages and disadvantages, and it could not be determined from the small-scale work which method was the more meritorious. Tungsten and (in some types of treatment) tin-bearing products were diluted by iron, the separation of which will require additional studies. Prevention of a portion of the iron from reporting with the tin or tungsten is a distinct advantage and possibility that will require inure laboratory work to develop the needed techniques for its accomplishment. Tin products from single treatments of stag ranged up to 75 percent in tin content but were more generally under 35 percent. Tungsten products were usually under 15 percent; but segregated portions could be selected, at a sacrifice in recovery, that contained up to 50 percent tungstic oxide equivalent.

Marquette's first reported the existence of iron In Missouri in 1673. Recorded production wan begun in 1815, increasing in size and importance until 1888, when the low price of iron resulting from Minnesota's production of high-grade ore caused most of the operators to close down. Missouri's iron production came from three types of ore: (l) Brown ores, including the deposits of primary and secondary limonites in southeast and southwest Missouri, (2) hematites of the filled sinks, including the ores of Central Ozark district, and (3) specular ores in porphyry, including the deposits of the St. Francois Mountains.

I would say mainly the cost. I showed only 3 cases. One of them was the one that Allen just described and there were two other cases. In those cases it was fairly easy to develop a solution using limited mobility grout to treat the soft soils suitable for the limited bearing pressures required by the structures. LMG readily provided a fairly reliable system for the foundation support at a reasonable cost.

"Effects of Bisbenzylisoquinoline Alkaloids on Alveolar Macrophages: Correlation between Binding Affinity. Inhibitory Potency and Antifibrotic Potential. CASTRANOVA, V., KANG, J-H., MA. J. K. H., Mo, C-H., MALANGA, L. J., MOORE M. D., SCHWEGLER-BERRY, D.. AND MA. J. Y. C. (1991). Toxicol. Appl. Pharmacol 108, 242-252. The Chinese have conducted extensive studies concerning the medicinal properties of plant products. In this investigation the ability of three bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloids to inhibit particle-induced activation of alveolar macrophages was evaluated and this inhibitory potential was correlated with the ability of those drugs to bind to membrane components. Tetrandrine. i.e.. an herbal medicine used as an antifibrotic agent in China, was a potent inhibitor of particle-stimulated oxygen consumption, superoxide release, and hydrogen peroxide secretion by alveolar macrophages. Tetrandrine also exhibited substantial binding affinity for membrane lipids and alveolar macrophages. In contrast, tubocurine, an analogue with little antifibrotic potential, exhibited low binding affinity and had little effect on macrophage activation. Methoxyadiantifoline, an alkaloid of unknown antifibrotic potential, exhibited inhibitory and binding properties similar to those of tetrandrine. The data indicate that a strong relationship exists between the antifibrotic potential of these alkaloids and their ability to bind to alveolar macrophages and inhibit particle-induced activation of these phagocytes. These drugs should serve as useful probes to evaluate the role of alveolar macrophages in pulmonary fibrosis. © 1991 Academic Press, Inc.Chronic silicosis is a fibrotic disease resulting from occupational exposure to silica dust. It is manifested initially by an increase in the quantity of pulmonary surfactant (Dethloff et al., 1986). However, in later stages it is characterized by an increase in collagen formation and the development of concentric hyalinized nodular lesions in the lung (Ziskind et al., 1976). Although mechanisms for the progression of silicosis have not yet been completely defined, activation of alveolar macrophages by respirable silica particles is believed to play an important role in the etiology of this disease. Studies from our laboratory have shown that both in vitro and in vivo silica exposures result in a stimulation of macrophage release of reactive products capable of damaging the lung parenchyma (Castranova et al., 1990; Goodman et al., 1990). In addition, exposure of al¬veolar macrophages to silica results in the release of fibrogenic factors which enhance the proliferation of fibroblasts and the synthesis of collagen by these pneumocytes (Leibovich and Ross, 1976; Bitterman et al., 1982, 1983).The bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloids, which represent the largest group among the iso-quinoline compounds isolated from the plant kingdom, are known to exhibit a broad rangeof pharmacological activities. Tetrandrine, for example, an alkaloid isolated from the root of Stephania tetrandra, has been tested for its antitumor, antihypertensive, and antisilicotic effects (Kupchan and Atland, 1973; Zeng et al., 1985; Yu et al., 1983). It is currently used in China as a treatment for angina, hypertension, and silica-induced pulmonary fibrosis (Li et al., 1981). Several related bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloids such as methoxyadiantifoline and tubocurine have also been evaluated for medicinal effects. Methoxyadiantifoline has been shown to exhibit effects on the cardiovascular system similar to those reported for tetrandrine (Jia et al., 1988). However, to date, the antifibrotic activity of methoxyadiantifoline has not been evaluated. In contrast to tetrandrine, tubocurine, a structural analogue of this drug, has been reported to be relatively ineffective against fibrosis (Mo et al., 1982)."

Discovered in 1952, the deposits have been explored by diamond drilling on and near a group of islands in lake Nipissing and from under-ground workings. The ore mineral is a uranian pyrochlore. It occurs in breccia zones in association with calcite, apatite, a?cmite, feldsiiars, biotite, magnetite, sulphides, and fluorite in varying amounts. The pyrochlore concentrations occur in a steeply-dipping gneiss series with some crystalline limestone. Trends indicate a ring structure 114 miles in diameter. The main ore zone shows evidence of repeated brecciation and a succession of replacements .giving rise to a complex of rock types. Pegmatite and lamprophyre dykes cut the ore as do calcite-fluorite veins and later faults with small displacements. Columbium and uranium occur al-most exclusively in pyrochlore, but the proportions vary. There is no tantalum and only small amounts of titanium.

Development of the Eldorado Mine THE pitchblende-silver deposits of Great Bear lake, Northwest Territories, were discovered by Gilbert LaBine in 1930. The property owned by Eldorado Gold Mines, Limited, consists of 53 claims situated, for the most part, on LaBine point, on the northeast shore of the lake. The Company also holds a group of 10 claims on Dowdell point, 7 miles to the southeast of the main group and across Echo bay. The fractures traversing the ridge on LaBine point can be readily seen from the air. Lack of overburden and the scantiness of vegetation leave rock exposures which are visible for miles. The years 1931 and 1932 were spent largely in staking, prospecting, and examination of the outcrops. A small Diesel plant was shipped to the property in 1932 and underground operations were started. Entry was made into the ore-body by means of an adit. A 20-ton mill was completed in the winter of 1933-34, and since then operations have been continuous, except for temporary shut-downs for additions to the mill. TRANSPORTATION The mine is situated 28 miles south of the Arctic Circle and is reached by an air route of 1,140 miles from Edmonton. The water route follows the course of the Mackenzie River system from Waterways, Alberta, the end of steel, and is approximately 1,450 miles in length. Two portages, at Fort Smith and on the Bear river, respectively, are necessitated by the occurrence of fast water. Transportation was one of the major problems to be solved, and Eldorado Gold Mines, Limited, found it necessary to embark upon both water and air freighting on its own account. The Company now operates a Bellanca 'plane with a payload of 4,400 pounds, and a complete water transportation system. The latter was established some years ago by the Northern Transportation Company and it is still operated under that name, but the Company is now a subsidiary of Eldorado. Modern steel boats, oil tankers, and barges were added to the fleet this season. The greater part of the ore shipments are made by water, aircraft being used for this purpose only when occasion demands. Freight rates have been greatly reduced by direct ownership of carriers. For example, water-borne freight is now quoted 'to the mine at $ll0 per ton, as compared with $240 per tan four years ago.

Foram estudadas as cinéticas de oxidação a altas temperaturas ao ar de um aço inoxidável austenítico laminado e de quatro juntas soldadas produzidas através do processo MIG/MAG com diferentes gases de proteção, dentro de um projeto que visava estudar o comportamento de juntas soldadas de aços inoxidáveis austeníticos a altas temperaturas. Utilizou-se o metal base 253MA, o consumível de soldagem 22.12.HT e diferentes concentrações de gases de proteção: 100% Ar, Ar + 2% CO2, Ar +4% CO2 e Ar + 20% CO2. Para cada mistura gasosa, foi soldado um corpo de prova. Observou-se aumento no teor de carbono e consequente diminuição da resistência à oxidação a altas temperaturas ao ar nas juntas soldadas com gases de proteção com maiores concentrações de CO2.

Este trabalho tem como objetivo o estudo de matérias-primas utilizadas nas indústrias de cerâmica vermelha da Região do Cariri-Ce, de forma a adequar o processamento às especificações de composição, umidade e temperatura para obtenção de componentes com qualidade e características satisfatórias. Para tal, foi realizada a análise de composição através de FRX, limites de Atterberg, retração linear, absorção de água e tensão de ruptura à flexão, pós queima, em três temperaturas distintas. Pode-se observar que algumas argilas apresentaram composições típicas das utilizadas para a fabricação de produtos da cerâmica vermelha, aumento de tensão de ruptura e retração com a temperatura de queima, redução da absorção com o aumento da temperatura de queima e a penas as amostras AM e BP encontraram-se no intervalo de extrusão satisfatória.

The Bureau of Mines conducted both laboratory and field investigations to study the effectiveness of medium-pressure (up to 30,000 psi) water jets in controlling the generation of airborne respirable dust during the hydraulic fragmentation of coal. Laboratory studies were conducted at the Farmington High Energy Test Site of the Twin Cities Mining Research Center, and field studies were carried out at the Humphrey No. 7 mine, Mount Morris, Pa., in the Pittsburgh coalbed. The water jets were produced by commercially available triplex pumps. The dust samples were collected by midget impinger samplers, and analyzed by electronic and optical counting techniques. Respirable dust concentration for a full-scale production model was projected at below 2 mg/m3, the maximum exposure allowed by the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969.

To date, the scheduling and access design of an underground mine have only been considered as two separate optimisation problems. First, access to the mine is designed and then the scheduling is completed. One drawback of this approach is that the costs of access construction fail to be reflected in the net present value (NPV) calculation. In this paper, designing the access and scheduling its construction are formulated as a single optimisation problem.The underground mine access construction process can be classified according to the number of faces being developed concurrently. An underground mine with a single decline branching at a junction point into two declines is considered. After construction reaches the junction, the two faces of the decline can be constructed sequentially or concurrently.This paper proposes an efficient algorithm for optimally locating a junction point to maximise the NPV where two faces are being developed concurrently. The NPV is defined by taking the locations of orebodies and their values, decline construction costs, decline development rate and discount rate into account. The variation of the NPV and the optimal locations of the junction point for one and two concurrent development faces for a range of discount rates are discussed and compared. Black coals occur in most of the major sedimentary basins in Australia. In addition to the better known Permian coal occurrences of the Sydney, Bowen, Oaklands and Galilee Basins, coals of Permian age occur in the Arckaringa Basin in South Australia, the Bonaparte Basin in Northern Territory and the Collie, Perth and Canning Basins in Western Australia and the Tasmania Basin in Tasmania. Coals of Triassic age occur in the Ipswich Callide and Tarong Basins in Queensland, the Tasmania Basin in Tasmania and the Leigh Creek area in South Aus- tralia. Coal bearing rocks of Jurassic age occur in the Mulgildie Basin and Maryborough Basins in Queensland and in both the Queensland and New South Wales portions of the Clarence Moreton Basin and Surat Basins. They also occur in the Perth Basin in Western Australia. Rocks of Cretaceous age known to contain coal occur in the Styx, Maryborough and Laura Basins in Queensland, the Gippsland Basin in Victoria and both the Queensland and New South Wales portions of the Surat Basin. The coal measures have been deposited in a variety of sedimentary environments and the coals vary widely with regard to thickness, extent, banding characteristics, maceral and ash content. However, they are generally of low rank and most are suitable only for steaming.

Vacutainers are used by the Bureau of Mines and the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA) for sampling mine air and products of combustion. Tests were conducted on both 10-ml and 30-ml sizes to study shelf life stability during storage, pretreatment of stoppers, and handling of a wider range of compounds. A chamber was constructed to provide convenient, efficient evacuation of the Vacutainers shortly prior to use. Fixed gases and C1 ?C5 hydrocarbons could be stored for 1 week or more after sampling. Where decreases occurred (C02 and C3-C5 hydrocarbons), they were predictable as a function of storage time. An unexplained phenomenon, slow accumulation of CO in evacuated Vacutainers, occurred after a few weeks of storage. The levels were low and time dependent. Attempts to eliminate this behavior by pretreating the stoppers were unsuccessful.

Recent advances in ruggedised industrial control system technology and architecture in combination with latest technologies in the fast-evolving 3D LiDAR sensor sector becoming available have enabled the implementation of sophisticated automation algorithms for mining equipment such as bucket wheel reclaimers, as published by the authors in the peer reviewed AusIMM 2019 Iron Ore conference proceedings. This paper provides an overview of a second use case for such automation technology in bulk material ports integral to iron ore operations. The real-time 3D machine-vision based port automation system described in this paper was originally developed for the BHP-Mitsubishi Alliance’s (BMA) Hay Point port. The system has seen deployment at other major mining and general ports in Australia, such as at Dalrymple Bay Terminal (DBT) (shown in Figure 1) managed by Dalrymple Bay Infrastructure Management (DBIM), Hay Point, Queensland. A qualificação das sucatas ferrosas e beneficiamento por moinhos shredder são operações utilizadas pelas usinas semi-integradas com objetivo da melhoria na produtividade e qualidade do aço produzido. Um benefício adicional é a redução de impurezas e a melhoria da qualidade ambiental desta matéria-prima. Neste trabalho é avaliada a influência da qualidade da sucata no teor de cloro e de metais residuais em poeiras de aciaria elétrica provenientes de três usinas semi-integradas, com diferentes perfis de produção. Os resuItados alcançados mostraram uma possível redução do teor de cloro de cerca de 50% com a utilização de sucata processada por shredder. Os menores níveis de cloro potencializam a aplicação posterior de métodos para adequação do teor de cloro, favoráveis à reciclagem, incorporação ou coprocessamento destas poeiras.

A series of parametric studies were carried out for a flotation cell using computational fluid dynamic (CFD) modelling to determine the local response of hydrodynamic performance measures to change in operating conditions. As an example, an Outotec cell was used to carry out the response analysis. The hydrodynamics of the flotation cell has been previously investigated by laboratory measurements presented by Schwarz et al (2019), and a CFD model of the cell was developed and validated using these measurement data (Schwarz et al., 2019). In this work, parametric studies have been performed by modelling the flotation cell at different stirring speeds and gas flowrates, varying above and below standard conditions. Predictions of void fraction, bubble size, bubble surface area flux and particle–bubble collision rate are presented showing the effects of increasing and decreasing stirring speed and gas flowrate around the base case. Generally, the total gas holdup in the flotation cell was found to increase with increasing gas flowrate. The bubble diameter was found to decrease with increasing stirring speed and increase with increasing gas flowrate. The collision rate increased with both stirring speed and gas flowrate. The parametric results show that there is a correlation between the bubble surface area flux Sb which is affected by stirring speed and gas flowrate, and the particle–bubble collision rate. With the collision rate as an indication of flotation collection, it is also possible to show that cell performance can improve more by increasing stirring speed than by increasing gas flowrate in a situation where everything else remains constant. The CFD results can form the basis for a Response Surface Method (RSM) analysis which can then be used for automated optimization of cell performance. O fluxo simétrico e distribuição de temperatura uniforme são de grande importância no processo de Lingotamento Contínuo de Beam Blank, porém a utilização de duas válvulas para alimentação do molde traz dificuldades operacionais relacionadas ao posicionamento das válvulas e controle de vazão. Neste sentido é interessante trabalhar com apenas uma válvula. Neste trabalho técnicas de modelagem física e matemática foram utilizadas para avaliar o fluxo de fluido no molde, comparando-se o caso em que se empregam duas válvulas tubulares, com aquele em que se utiliza apenas uma válvula. Verificou-se que esta última configuração resultou em uma mudança no comportamento do fluxo, aumento na profundidade de impacto, porém a velocidade na região do menisco não teve variação significativa em comparação com a utilização de duas válvulas tubulares.
