In past, no serious attempts have been made to study the effects of operating environments on performance characteristics of a mining system. In this paper, proportional hazards model (PHM) analysis technique is introduced which can be used to analyze the effects of operating environments on the performance of a mining system. It can be used to select suitable materials, manufacturers or designs of items for a particular working environment. In this paper some applications of the PHM are discussed with examples from a Swedish mine. Its application for decision making in maintenance is also discussed.

Working in urban environments presents unique logistical challenges beyond those typically associated with traditional geotechnical design and construction. These challenges can include constrained sites with limited access and laydown area, vibration concerns for adjacent structures, and the need to complete work within limited schedules. When challenging geotechnical conditions like variable bedrock elevations are present, the need to balance performance requirements with logistical constraints become the driving factor when selecting deep foundation systems. This paper focuses on the deep foundations used for a new elevated pedestrian bridge at a major health care facility in Tampa, Florida. In addition to the technical design requirements, the owner required a deep foundation system that could offer low vibrations, rapid production, and clean installation to limit impacts on their properties and the public roadway that separated them. The paper describes the project specific geotechnical and design conditions, describes Ductile Iron Pile design, and focuses on how installation of the system addressed the unique logistical challenges. In addition, the implementation of a full-scale load testing program to assess compression, uplift, and lateral design capacities is presented. This paper represents one of the few published references for Ductile Iron Piles on projects in the United States.

The mine is entered by a central vertical shaft, strongly timbered, and containing two compartments-one for the passenger cage, the other for the large skips bringing the ore to the surface. A man-way, for emergencies, is also provided, parallel to the shaft. The cage is a single-deck steel box, carrying about thirty persons; by means of arrangements above and below, it can also hoist and lower materials needed in the workings. Levels are run at intervals of 100 feet. In special cases, where the ore conditions warrant, sub-levels are operated, such as those at 1,113 feet and 1,123 feet (Fig. 7), which are connected by winzes with the 11 th level. One of these was pushed for 40 feet, and then abandoned because it was unprofitable to take up ore of the grade encountered. The ore between levels is removed by stoping. The drifts follow the course of the veins as much as possible, with numerous cross-cuts. Winzes, raises, connections, etc., are blasted out where needed. The main drifts are at least 8 ft. high by about 9 ft. wide. All former narrow drifts had to be widened sorne time ago, by ruling of the Ontario Department of Mines, to lessen the danger of accidents with cars in the small passages. Accurate plans of the under-ground workings are kept in the office, and extensive surveying is always being done underground to keep the maps up to date, measure the cubical contents of stopes, and so forth. Timber is extensively used in the construction of supports and chutes, and in the sinking of the shaft. Steel and concrete are too expensive to compete with timber, which 1s abundant in such sections as have escaped forest tires.

"Funding has been made available through the National Energy Program to build a mobile fine coal treatment plant. The plant is intended f or field application and also to upgrade the existing pilot plant facilities.Western Canadian coals with high proportions of fines (due 10 their friability) cause high losses of fine coal to the reject and in turn reduce the over-all recovery of saleable coal. Eastern Canadian coals with high amounts of sulphur of ten require crushing to fin e sizes to liberate pyrite and therefore need effective and efficient separation of these fine sulphur particles. The difficulties involved in solving these problems are two-fold. One is the reluctance to experiment in an operating wash plant and the other is that laboratory scale testing often cannot be extrapolated to the plant environment. The mobile fine cleaning plant with its ability to operate at existing coal preparation plants across Canada and with its flexibility in implementing flowsheet option s and close monitoring of fine coal circuit variables, is ideally suited to solve these fine coal cleaning problems. The mobile plant objectives are to design and optimize flowsheets, evaluate and improve fine cleaning circuit operations and 10 lest new process monitoring and control equipment.The schedule for construction and the required resources will be outlined along with flowsheet options and the general R&D philosophy of the mobile plant.IntroductionIn relation to coal preparation technology, Canadian coal s can be grouped as Eastern coal, Rocky Mountain metallurgical coal and Foothills high volatile bituminous coal. The eastern coals have high sulphur contents and in some cases require crushing or even grinding to liberate the fine pyrite . Rocky Mountain metallurgical coals often occur in highly sheared seams which have been subjected to rapid coalification. The high friability of these coals means that degradation during mining, handling and processing is extensive and results in large amounts of fine s ranging between 20 and 60% by mass of the wash plant feed. The widely varying geo logical structure and exposure to the elements results in partially oxidized coals which perform inconsistently in the traditional method of fine cleaning by flotation . Foothills high volatile bituminous coals for thermal use are frequently interbedded with soft shales and bentonitic clays. These clays disintegrate during washing and swell, producing large volumes of tailings. The presence of clays in plant circuits, particularly fine circuits, tends to increase the viscosity and may cause deterioration of the fines density separation and increase magnetite losses. In view of the fact that fine coal cleaning is the most difficult aspect of coal preparation , a research program is being established to study the factors involved and to offer some solutions.A recent performance evaluation of Canadian washeries showed that yield losses in the minus 2 mm coal circuits were approximately ten times those occurring in the coarse coal circuits(1). Because 2 mm x 0 coal represents 30 to 70 per cent of the raw coal, these losses can be considerable . The operating and capital costs of beneficiating minus 6 mm coal are about four to five times higher than for plus 6 mm coal. In the case o f minus 2 mm coal the costs are even higher. The economic importance of the fine coal cleaning cannot be over emphasized and as a result, the CANMET R&D program is geared for fine coal beneficiation."

MINE fires are always dangerous and are frequently accompanied by loss of life during the period of confusion which is apt to follow their discovery. In metal mines, fires may result from the accidental ignition of some combustible material, or they may be of spontaneous origin resulting from the rapid decomposition of sulphide. They occur frequently enough to demonstrate the need of some special equipment and a general plan for controlling them, in addition to measures for their prevention. Nearly all the large copper mines have had fires, and the methods of fighting them have been well described in recent papers, notably-by C. L. Berrien,1 R.. E. Tally,2 and others in discussion. The Copper Queen mine has many shafts, which are connected by underground workings. The deeper parts are ventilated by fans, but in the shallower portions natural ventilation through numerous connecting raises or shafts is sufficient. There have been several fires in the past few years, of which all are extinguished but one, and that is under control. These notes cover particularly the preparations that are being made-to check a new fire, partially or temporarily, and to facilitate the escape of workmen in the interval before a definite plan of fighting it can be established. A fire may occur in a shaft or station, or in some working father away. In case of fire in an upcast shaft, the gas would escape to the surface and the immediate result would probably not be dangerous to workmen, as they could escape by other shafts. In a downcast shaft, however, the gas would be distributed very rapidly throughout a large portion of the mine, and men might easily be trapped and asphyxiated. A fire in mine workings, drift, raise, or stope, would be dangerous in a degree, but the draft there is likely to be less strong than in a shaft and probably a smaller area would be invaded by the fire gases.

This report summarizes the findings of methods of treating caking coals in a fluid bed to destroy their caking properties. In batch tests it was found that several coals, including those with a free-swelling index greater than 8, could be decaed at temperatures from 400° to 425° C with a fluidizing gas composed of inert gas or steam containing 0.2 percent oxygen and a minimum residence LS,-;,' of 5 minutes. When treatment decreased the free-swelling index from about 8 to 1-1/2 or lower, the resulting treated coal was noncaking. In a continuous unit with continuous feed and discharge of coal, slightly more severe conditions were required to decake the coal. For 18- to 100-mesh coal a temperature of 430° to 440° C and an oxygen-to coal ratio of 0.4 cubic foot of oxygen per pound of coal feed was necessary. Finer mesh sizes required lower oxygen-to-coal ratios. In tests using air only as the fluidizing medium and treatment temperatures well below the softening range, the caking properties of 150- to 200-mesh coal were destroyed in 30 to 40 minutes of residence time at 200° C. Coarser sizes of 18 to 48, 48 to 100, and 100 to 150 mesh required longer residence time.

The paper deals with the investigation of two types of coreless induction furnaces, one of 60 cycles, the other of 5000 cycles. Nickel was used as test material and the absorption of oxygen by molten nickel was chosen for determining the influence of the frequency on the metallurgical characteristics of the furnaces. Dr. Herty's aluminum method, slightly modified, was found suitable for determining the nickel oxide content in nickel. Also an electrolytic method for determining alumina in nickel was worked out. The solubility-temperature relations for nickel oxide in molten nickel were determined approximately. It was found that the solubility of nickel oxide increases with the temperature. Comparative tests on the rate of oxygen absorption made in a 60 and a 5000-cycle furnace showed that the absorption of nickel oxide in nickel is an increasing function of turbulence, time and temperature. The rate of oxygen pickup in the 60-cycle furnace is about three times as great as in the 5000-cycle furnace. In the 60-cycle furnace the maximum oxygen content of the melt comes close to the saturation limit. Melting under an oxygen-free atmosphere prevents oxidation in both types of furnaces. The Critchfield manganese deposit, Huntingdon County, Pa., was investigated by the Bureau of Mines in October 1942. Iron ore was mined from an open cut just southeast of the manganese deposit about 80 years ago. The Critchfield Sand & Feldspar Co. was operating (1942) a clay-mining and beneficiation plant northeast of the manganese deposit. The Bureau completed six rotary bucket-drill holes and three hand-auger holes, aggregating 370 feet on the deposit. This report describes the work performed and presents the results obtained.

"For the comprehensive recovery ofV, Ti, Fe in vanadium-titanium magnetite in the process of pre-reduction-electric furnace smelting, it is expected that vanadium oxide is reduced into molten iron and titanium oxide is available in the slag. Thus the effect of slag basicity, the content of MgO, MnO and CaF 2 of slag content on the separation of slag and molten iron and the comprehensive recovery of V, Ti, Fe were investigated. The results show that increasing slag basicity, MgO, MnO and CaF2 are all beneficial to the separation of slag and molten iron. Higher slag basicity and the addition of CaF2 strengthen the reduction of vanadium oxide, and inhibite the reduction of titanium oxide, which are in favour of the recovery ofV and Ti. However, the addition ofMgO, MnO was not efficient for the comprehensive recovery ofV, Ti, Fe. For the vanadium-titanium magnetite of Panxi in China, the recovery of Fe was over 98%, the recovery ofV in molten iron was over 85% and the Ti02 content in slag was about 43% under the optimal conditions of slag phase type.IntroductionIt is well known that there are abundant vanadium-titanium magnetite resources which are located in Panzhihua of Sichuan Province[!]. At present the vananium-titanium magnetite concentrates are smelted in the blast furnace, which just make use of iron and vanadium, but lots of titanium is discarded in the slag. At the same time, the process has a large number of disadvantages, such as low recovery of vanadium, long route, pollutions, large investment and expenditure of energy[2-3]. In recent years, in order to efficiently utilize the vanadium-titanium magnetite concentrates, several new non-blast furnace processes have been proposed, such as pre-reduction-electric furnace, pre-reduction-grinding separation and so on[4]. "In this work, the combination of microwave drying (MWD) and heat pump drying (HPD) drying experiments were designed by response surface methodology (RSM) based on central composite design (CCD) using design expert software (Version 7.15), and the process parameters were optimized. The conditions given by software are: the MWD time is 4.6 or 4.4 min; the HPD time is 9.0 or 8.6 min; and the sample mass is 620 or 600 g. Under those conditions the moisture content is 1.0 10-2kg water/kg wet basis, and the effectiveness ratio is 0.70 kg water/kwh. The results of confirmatory experiments conducted under the optimized conditions show the combined drying have superiority of decrease of energy consumption and increase of handling capacity over the single MWD or HPD.1 IntroductionSilica sand is one of a silicate mineral with properties as hard, anti-friction and less reactive, commonly used as raw material for foundry and construction. The silica sand obtained from mineral dressing processes such as scrubbing, magnetic separation and flotation. Its moisture content is approximately 0.08~0.12 kg water/kg wet basis. The most common methods used for drying are solar drying and hot air drying. But these methods have some shortcomings: for example, the solar drying has longer process time due to low energy yield, [1] hot air drying has low-energy efficiency and a lengthy drying time. [2]Microwave is electromagnetic waves with frequency are 300MHz to 300GHz. The outstanding features of microwave heating are rapidity and selectivity. The water specific inductive capacity of 60~78 is much bigger than common materials, the moisture always quickly absorb electromagnetic wave and rapidly transfer to vapors. So, it can significant reduce the drying time. [3] Heat pumps (HPs) are devices for raising the temperature of low grade heat energy to a more useful level using a relatively small amount of high grade energy."

A recent survey of 23 vein-type metal mining operations in several western states discloses that some of the more serious deficiencies in ventilation technology are associated with inordinately high levels of mine resistance. This problem has progressively increased over many years of operation (without adequate remedial action) as mines have become extended in depth. Where two shafts form the downcast and upcast airways of a relatively deep mine, the whole of the mine air volume must pass through each shaft in turn. Since at least one of these shafts contains hoisting equipment, structural members are necessary to support the rigid guides and shaft walls. These offer high aerodynamic resistance. In some deep mines, a single shaft of this nature may represent upwards of one-half of the total mine resistance. The second shaft, depending upon its design, may represent an additional one-third of the mine resistance. Therefore, the various working levels throughout the mine contribute only the small remaining amount of the total mine resistance.

A PART of the material incorporated in this paper was derived from the studies of ancient metal objects examined by the authors from time to time for museums and art collectors, in order to verify the age of the metal. The data thus accumulated during several years was systemati-cally surveyed and supplemented by new material obtained in examina-tion of a set of specimens that had been generously donated by museums for this study. Altogether over 50 pieces were investigated, of which 39 are described in this paper. Every specimen is at least 1500 years old; the majority are considerably older. Exact conditions to which these bronze and copper objects were exposed in the ground are unknown, unfortunately. It is safe to say that exposure conditions did not remain constant during the long period of burial. Although the collection of specimens studied represents a wide variation in location and age of the objects, as well as in the nature and composition of the metals, it was found that fundamental changes in the metal structure were limited to a few typical cases which, therefore, may be considered as more or less general. The authors' chief aim was to study the effect of extremely long periods of corrosion on the structure of bronze and copper.

Most of the arsenic contained in copper concentrates is removed in the gas phase during the smelting and converting processes and, according to recent environmental regulations, it is required to fix it in a solid stable form. In this regards, ferric arsenate has been reported as thermal and aqueous stable compound. Therefore, various alternatives for treating gas containing arsenic were considered in this work. From data obtained at laboratory scale on fixation of arsenic using iron oxide, a new process to treat copper concentrates containing arsenic was evaluated. The effect of temperature, oxygen potential and the sample porosity on the fixation of arsenic contained in a gaseous stream was studied, and the iron oxide converted into ferric arsenate was up to 10%. The obtained results suggest a new alternative for gas treatment with an interesting and attractive technical development. The arsenic was retained as ferric arsenate with thermal and aqueous stability, and it allows a safe disposal keeping the environmental restrictions. The kinetics parameters are used to scale up laboratory results to higher processing rates.

For improvement in the productivity of tall building projects, table formwork is one of the main methods that have been adopted for slab formwork. Because the table formwork method is an equipment-oriented construction method, the type of lifting equipment and method of operation considerably affects the productivity and cost of the table formwork. It is also important to make an equipment input plan for completing the table formwork within the time given, according to the structural construction cycle. For performing the table formwork, a tower crane or an independent lifting system, and shifting trolleys, are required. However, if an inefficient equipment input plan is made, exorbitant cost may be incurred. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to analyze the productivity of a table formwork, considering the type and number of lifting equipment and the number of trolleys inputted, and to suggest quantitative data for making a cost-efficient equipment input plan within the construction duration given. It is expected that the results of this research will be utilized as a basis for cost-efficient equipment input planning.

Operations at the Mount Bonnie gold/silver project are described. The project is based on the gossan of a stratiform and stratabound polymetallic sulphide deposit. The gossan contains approx- imately 100 000 tonne of ore grading 8g/tonne Au and 230g/tonne Ag. This is mined in an open cut, and transported to a stockpile area lkm away, from which it is fed to the treat- ment plant. The ore is crushed through two stages and fed to a fine ore storage shed, from which it is reclaimed, milled and cyanide leached in draft tube agitators. The pulp is filtered using a horizontal belt filter to recover a pregnant solution. Silver sulphide is precipitated using sodium sulphide solution, and collected as a mixed sulphide/precoat concentrate on a drum filter. The solution is then passed through carbon columns where the gold is adsorbed and is subsequently recovered by methanol desorption using a process developed by Micron Research, and electrowinning. Modifications to the treatment plant circuit based on operational experience are Described.

THE prevention of silicosis by metallic aluminium has been reported by Denny, Robson, and Irwin in two papers. The first (1) was published in 1937; the second (2), in 1939. The results definitely established that silicosis was prevented in animals by the inhalation of small quantities of aluminium. The present communication records subsequent progress in this field of research. HARMLESSNESS OF ALUMINIUM Animal experiments having served their purpose, it became necessary to consider means to test the discovery on humans. A question for immediate consideration was: Is aluminium harmful to man when inhaled as a fine powder? While the animal experiments were reassuring, since they conclusively showed the powder to be innocuous when breathed by animals, it was, nevertheless, desirable to have additional reassurance with regard to its effect upon human beings. Through the courtesy of the Aluminum Company of America and especially the valued interest in this problem displayed by that Company's Director of Research, Dr. Francis C. Frary, a study was made of the records pertaining to the health of a group of 125 employees who had for many years been engaged in the manufacture of finely powdered, metallic aluminium for the paint and ink industries. The conditions were such that these employees had inhaled varying and oft-times very dense concentrations of this powder daily over periods ranging from 6 to 23 years, the average for the group being 12 years. X-ray pictures of their chests showed no abnormalities attributable to aluminium. Their general health seemed better than that of the 3,000 workers in other sections of the plant. In fact, the early films of three employees in this group of 125 showed shadows suggestive of minimal tuberculosis, which shadows were not discernible in films taken after considerable periods of exposure to aluminium powder. The harmlessness of aluminium was, by this study, reasonably well established at the outset, a finding subsequently verified by Ontario research on humans.

"Theoretical notions of mass transfer processes in cascade separation of bulk materials have not been adequately developed as yet (Barsky M.D. 1980). In this paper we have derived linear difference equation of the second order for a cascade with initial feeding top any stage proceeding from mass exchange regularities. The solution of these equations has allowed us to determine quantitative dependences of the material distribution over the cascade stages, which serve the basis of the method of predictive estimate of the process results. We have also examined the model of the material distribution coefficient formation at individual cascade stages.We have checked the adequacy of this model to experimental data. It is noteworthy that the obtained theoretical results are phenomenological, i.e. they can be applied to the processes of separation of different physical nature, e.g. of isotopes, liquid media, gases, etc.INTRODUCTIONRecently, the processes of cascade separation of bulk materials have found broad application in various industries. They ensure a high separation efficiency and high-quality composition of final products. Although specialized literature gives serious attention to cascade processes [1], their theory is not sufficiently developed yet. "Mineral exploration in the Sicker Group, a belt of Paleozoic volcano-sedimentary rocks on Vancouver Island, has traditionally centred on auriferous polymetallic volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits such as those currently mined by Westmin Resources Ltd. near Buttle Lake. Recently, however, the focus of exploration in the Sicker Group has shifted toward targets of structurally controlled gold concentrations, with notable success. Major north and northwesterly-trending structural features such as the Cowichan-Horne Lake break (one of several regional high-angle thrust fault s active throughout a long period of geological time) and related fault systems have contributed to localization of gold mineralization.Using the extensive information database compiled by MPH Consulting Limited during numerous exploration projects in the Sicker Group, two cross sections through areas with significant gold occurrences southeast of Port Alberni are presented. The cross sections combine geological, geochemical and geophysical data in an attempt to emphasize the relationship between structural trends and gold mineralization. Examples from specific properties, including gold discoveries along the Mineral Creek fault zone, are used to illustrate this relationship."
