The value created in any mining operation is a function of the mine plan. The quality of this plan is dependent on the strategies employed during definition drilling, resource estimation and mine planning. This paper presents opportunities to improve the value of an operation through better strategic management of these core activities. THE objective of the iron smelter is naturally the production of high quality iron at the lowest practicable cost. To enable this, large tonnages are put through the blast furnace, and, at the same time, the quality of the iron must be under definite control.The modern blast furnace enables these objectives to be attained. The description whieh follows sets out the general details of construction of such furnaces, and the operation at thc Broken Hill Proprietary Company's blast furnaces at Newcastle, New South Wales.The occurence of iron in many forms is so well known as to need no description. Modern civilisation may be said to be built on a foundation of iron, and, today, the production of iron and steel has beeome one of the world's industries.A short historical introduction will serve to show the evolution of the processes and apparatus since iron production assumed importance.There is no definite date fixed as to when iron was first made, or by what means it was first discovered. Perhaps prehistoric man threw iron bearing stone on to his fire, and these became reduced, Ieaving a soft metal behind, or more probably the first iron was of meteoric origin.There is evidence, however, to prove that it has been known for a period of 6000 years. Iron has been found in the Pyramids and its use was known to the early Eqyptians and later to the Hebrews, Assyrians, Greeks and Chinese. Following the Greeks, the Romans excelled in its extraction and uses in the manufacture of their instruments of war, and to this fact can largely be attributed the success of their many wars of conquest. Gas outbursts occur as sudden eruptions of gas and minerals from the face of a mine heading as the heading approaches potentially burst-prone (or anomalous) zones of rock. Such outbursts have resulted in considerable damage to equipment and in some cases lives have been lost. Characterizing these anomalous zones and detecting their presence is therefore vital to safe mining. Certain significant characteristics associated with the outburst-prone zones are: (1) the presence of fluid inclusions, (2) unstable stress conditions, (3) characteristic geologic structures, (4) certain physical properties of the rock, and (5) micro-seismic activity. Geophysical and engineering methods for detecting these characterisitcs are discussed and are considered with respect to their past success and future potential for predicting gas outbursts.

It has been shown for an important class of complex transition intermetallic compounds (a, P, R, 6, and p phases) characterized by "normal" coordination [CN12 (icosahedral), CN14, CN15, CN16/ that interatomic distances nay be calculated to a good approximation as the sum of characteristic atomic radii. Two radii, one for major ligands and one for minor ligmds, are specified for each atom, except in the case of CN12 where only a miaaor-ligand radius is specified. The same appears to be true of transition-metal phases of simpler struc-ture: Laves phases (CN12, CN16), and p-tungsten phases (CN12, CN14). In the case of known examples of the more complex phases, a simple rule is given which specifies these radii. However, only a fraction of the known examples of the simpler phases obey this rule closely. To include the latter phases the rule may be modified by considering the radii as linear functions of the weighted average of the Pauling CN12 radii of the two kinds of atonzs, with the radii weighted according to the over-all chemical composition of the alloy. With very few exceptions interatomic distances for both tlze complex and the simpler transition phases can b$ predicted with this modified rule to within 0.06A. ManY intermetallic compounds are known of composition A,By, in which A is a transition element to the left of the manganese column in the periodic table and B is a transition element in or to the right of it. Frequently the coordination numbers (CN) found in these compounds are CN12 (icosahedral), CN14, CN15, and CN16 (called "normal" coordinations by Frank and Kasperl). Well-known examples are the cubic and hexagonal Laves phases which have CN12 and CN16, and the 0-tungsten (CrsO) phases which have CN12 and CN14. In the more complicated (often ternary) phases, such as the a phase,2 the Beck phases p3 and R~, the 6 phase,5 and the p p atoms occur with CN12, CN14, CN15, and (except for a) CN16; in many cases several crystallographically independent atoms of one particular CN occur in the asymmetric unit. A large number of independent interatomic distances are found in these complicated phases, varying from 20 in the a phase to 94 in the 6 phase. These distances show a large spread; they vary, for example, from 2.358 to 3.278A in the 6 phase. In our analysis of these distances we found that in each of these compounds every atomic position can be characterized by either one or two radii. The CN12 positions are characterized by a single radius, The higher coordinated positions are characterized by two radii, namely: the CN14 positions by 4 in the direction of the twelve "5-coordinated" ligands3 (called 'minor" by Frank and Kasperl) and by r:, in the direction of the two "6-coordi-nated" ligands (called "major" by Frank and Kasper); the CN15 positions by r15 for the twelve minor and r:, for the three major ligands; the CN16 positions by rlE for the twelve minor and r:, for the four major ligands. We have expressed the experimentally determined interatomic distances in observational equations as the sums of the appropriate pairs of these characteristic radii and the value of these radii have been determined by the method of least Squares. Despite their wide range, the interatomic distances could then be predicted by the sums of these atomic radii with an average deviation in any one compound of 0.06A or less. The results are summarized in Table I. Inspection of the radii thus obtained shows that in the structures in Table I the radii (in A) are given to a first approximation by the simple relationship: Where CN is the coordination number (12, 14, 15, or 16), and A = 1 for major ligands and = 0 for minor ligands. The interaLomic distances can be predicted within about 0.1A by sums of these atomic radii. Another phase belonging in this group with CN12, 14, 15, and 16 is the y phase & B7, in which A is molybdenum or tungsten and B is iron or cobalt. Recently the M%C phase has been refinedE and the observed distances also agree well with those calculated with Eq. [I]. (In the original determination of the structure of W6FeV7 the F$(II)-W(II1) distance was erroneously given as 2.84A, but we have recalculated it fro? the published parameters and found it to b? 2.57i4, in good agreement with the value of 2.6A predicted with Eq. The Bureau of Mines has studied the problem of cracking in residential structure walls from vibrations produced by blasting in surface mines. Direct observations were made of blasting damage consisting primarily of cosmetic cracking in plaster and gypsum board walls. Measurements of structure response and also application of the response spectra analysis single-degree-of-freedom model were used to quantify the frequency dependence of the safe level criteria. An overall summary analysis was performed using the new Bureau of Mines damage observations and data obtained from nine previous studies, including the three analyzed earlier by the BuMines for Bulletin 656, published in 1971. Separate analysis of the high- and low-frequency damage cases, structural response, and two types of construction resulted in the establishment of safe vibration levels ranging from 12 mm/sec to 50 mm/sec (0.5 in/sec to 2.0 in/sec).

I read a book the other day called Opportunity 2000. The book, Opportunity 2000, talks about what's going to happen in the next nine or ten years as we propel ourselves through the 1990s into the 219 century. The book, Opportunity 2000, is a futuristic book, somewhat like Megatrends. It said that by the year 2000, baby boomers will be old people, and when you got here before the baby boomers, how does that make you feel? It said that there will be more women in the American work place by the year 2000 than men. The book, Opportunity 2000, discusses diversity. The big challenge for the 1990s is ?diversity?. We'll have the D-word in the 1990s. We had the G-word in the 1980s ? ?global.? Diversity in terms of more immigrants, more minorities, more females into the American work place, but also value systems diversity. We'll have to deal and adapt to four different generational clusters in dealing and interacting with employees and management in the 1990s-value systems diversity. "The development of a predictive geometallurgical model is a multidisciplinary and iterative task that involves both discovery and integration aspects. In this paper, the authors discuss the concepts of geometallurgical modelling in terms of the underlying relationships that are used to connect geology, metallurgy and economic value, and how the early-stage preparation of a spatial geometallurgical model enhances project value and provides a sound basis for future studies and test work programs.Hot Chili’s (copper-gold-molybdenum) Productora Project, which is located in northern Chile, is a porphyry-copper style deposit that can be exploited using open pit mining and preparation of a saleable concentrate from fresh ore, as well as heap leaching, solvent extraction and electrowinning (SX-EW) extraction of copper from oxide ores. To enhance project value in the Productora prefeasibility study (PFS), Hot Chili developed a geometallurgical model that was used to predict the process responses of both sulfide and oxide ores. The Productora model incorporates test results from mineralogical, metallurgical and comminution testing, as well as other studies completed on a suite of samples collected from the many geological domains of the deposit.Using Bond Work Index and Abrasion Index proxies in the geometallurgical model, Hot Chili estimated the variability of sulfide ore throughput and comminution costs. Heap leach acid consumption in oxide ore was estimated from drill hole calcium concentrations. The model was then used in mine scheduling to identify high and low throughput or high and low acid ore zones so that the processing of these zones could be advanced or deferred to improve net present value (NPV). Additionally, the cost benefits of preparing an early-stage geometallurgy model were quantified through a comparison to a conventional model that was based on test work averages.CITATION:King, G S and Macdonald, J L, 2016. O objetivo desse trabalho consiste no estudo do grau de sensitização do aço UNS S31803 envelhecido a 700ºC por ensaios de reativação potenciodinâmica de duplo loop (DL-EPR). Para isso corpos de prova do aço em estudo foram solubilizados a 1175ºC e envelhecidos a 700ºC em tempos entre 10 min e 360 h. Corpos de prova metalográficos foram utilizados para caracterização microestrutural que foi realizada por meio de técnicas de estereologia quantitativa a partir de imagens de elétrons retroespalhados e análises magnéticas usando o ferritoscópio. Os ensaios DL-EPR foram conduzidos em solução 2M H2SO4 + 0,5M NaCl + 0,01M KSCN à 30ºC em amostras polidas. Observou-se que o comportamento eletroquímico do aço UNS S31803 possui forte influência da microestrutura, já que o grau de sensitização (GS) aumenta com o aumento do tempo de envelhecimento, devido à formação de fases intermetálicas que empobrecem as regiões adjacentes em Cr e Mo.

Introduction A few years ago the name Katanga recalled, to those interested in copper, a far-off country in central Africa where deposits of huge size were beginning to pour a stream of copper into the world's markets. But no one heard of the adjacent part of northern Rhodesia as a potential copper region. It was then a bush-covered wilderness, with a few lonely, widely-spaced villages, and here and there a copper prospect that created but little outside attention. There was also one struggling mine whose development created pessimism. The low-grade carbonate outcrops of Rhodesia did not compare favourably with the rich carbonate ores of Katanga. And, since Katanga was mining only oxidized ores, it was then thought that this adjacent region likewise would contain only oxidized ores. The one mine that had been started, Bwana M'Kubwa, was working on low-grade carbonate ore at a loss. The outlook was not promising. But, a little over three years ago, the aspect changed. The vision of one far-sighted engineer embraced the possibility that here copper sulphides might underlie those low-grade carbonate croppings. His courageous associates furnished the capital; drilling commenced, and the great Roan Antelope mine rapidly emerged. In quick succession, the N'Kana, Mufulira, N'Changa, N'Changa Extension, and Chambishi mines were heard from. Prospecting and development are now proceeding apace, towns are being hewn out of the virgin bush, plants are being reared, and ramifying branch railways are being pushed out from the single line of steel that now connects Rhodesia with the coasts to the south. A great new copper-mining centre is in the making, about which the world will hear much in the future. As with most new mining camps, rumors abound regarding its ore possibilities; some are correct, some are erroneous, and reliable information unfortunately is all too scanty.

Os aços inoxidáveis duplex (AID), apresentam em geral uma microestrutura composta de austenita e ferrita em proporções aproximadamente iguais. Para ter o controle dos processos de fabricação e desempenho é importante conhecer sua evolução microestrutural, devido à precipitação de fases intermetálicas como sigma (s) e chi (?), que causam grave deterioração das propriedades mecânicas do material. Neste trabalho foi estudada a evolução da fase sigma (s) durante tratamentos térmicos em temperaturas intermetálicas (800°C-900°C) de amostras do aço inoxidável duplex tipo SAF2205 (DIN 1.4462/UNS 31803). Foi observada uma gradual redução da intensidade do sinal do ruído de Barkhausen com o aumento do tempo de tratamento térmico, indicando uma redução na fração de fase ferromagnética. Para tempos de tratamento de 24 horas, o sinal de Ruído de Barkhausen está quase totalmente inserido dentro do ruído de fundo da medida, indicando haver uma fração volumétrica bastante reduzida de ferrita. Por meio da produção de amostras padrão para calibração, essa pode ser uma via de avaliação não destrutiva de componentes submetidos em campo a temperaturas nas quais se formam fases intermetálicas.

Commencing in 1956, Rio TInto Australian Exploration Pty Limited in association with Electrolytic Zinc Co of Australasia, Limited, has been carrying out a mineral prospecting program in North-West Tasmania over an area of about 4000 square miles.The program has comprised extensive airborne geophysical surveys, detailed geological mapping, ground geophysical and geochemical investigations. Out of the wealth of new data, and the examination of previous records, has emerged a new structural concept of regional ore control and distribution in North-West Tasmania. This roncept stems from the discovery of an ancient 'fossil' rift valley (graben), named the Owen Rift Valley, along which are located the major mines of the area and numerous well-known prospects. The known mines and prospects from north to south include Mt Bischoff (tin); the Pinnacles (zinc, lead, ropper); the Chester (pyrites); Rosebery-Hercules (lead, zinc, ropper, silver, gold); Mt Tyndall (lead, ropper, zinc); Comstock and Tasman (copper, lead, zinc); Mt Lyell (copper, pyrites, gold); Mt Jukes and Mt Darwin (ropper). The identification of the West Coast (Owen Conglomerate) Range as a fossil rift valley is due to Or B Campana, who carried out extensive geological mapping and interpretation work, and who, with S B Dickinson, are the senior authors of this paper.S B Dickinson, who introduced B Campana to the geological problems of West Tasmania, had previously investigated the Mt Lyell and Rosebery mining fIeld, to which reference is made in this work.D King assisted in the regional mapping and in providing numerous data on the mineral distribution of the area.R S Matheson rontributed to the fmdings on ore emplacement and rontrol in the discussions held on this subject. DIAMOND drill research work was initiated at the School of Mines, University of Minnesota, in late 1949. The Drilling Symposium held in Duluth that spring highlighted the problem of high cost and core recovery and the need for controlled testing. An advisory committee made up of informed representatives of both mining companies and drilling companies was formed to suggest and advise on a program of drill research. A Hy-Mac hydraulic drill unit, see Fig. 1, especially designed for experimental testing, was obtained for this work by the School of Mines through the courtesy of the Carboloy Co. It is an extremely flexible unit, capable of exerting a forward thrust of about 1750 lb and turning at speeds from 650 to 2200 rpm. "In order to accurately detect whether the collision occurs between particle and bubble in flotation process, a collision detection method of particle and bubble, which based on morphological image processing and Otsu method, is presented. First of all, it utilizes image pre-processing to optimize images, the target area and the background area are segmented by Otsu method. Then, particle and bubble are fitted to a circle combined with the least-square method. It’s convenient to obtain the coordinate information and radius. Finally, the position of all particles is extracted to an image, which achieves the particle tracking and avoids the complexity of the continuous frame image tracking.Experimental analysis shows that the relationship between the two ordinate difference d and the bubble radius r has a certain influence on the collision detection when the dripping particles are close to the bubble, when d>r, the detection accuracy is 92%;When d=1/2r, the detection accuracy is 97%;When d=0, the detection accuracy is 100%. The result indicates that this algorithm can detect the collision between particle and bubble quickly, and the working hours of manual test are saved effectively ,the best position of dripping particles close to the bubble which is taken with a CCD camera should be in the range of the particle and bubble’s ordinate difference less than half of the bubble radius.INTRODUCTIONFlotation is an important technical means to separate useful minerals from ores. The flotation process of ores and materials in the world is treated by flotation technology up to billions of tons every year, so the study of flotation process is particularly important. Raising the collision probability between mineral particles and bubbles in flotation process is one of the key factors to improve flotation separation efficiency[1]. The study indicates that[2-4] the collision probability between particles and bubbles is influenced by many factors, such as particle density, particle size bubble size, etc. The analysis of these influential factors requires a lot of experiments. Therefore, it is of great significance to design an accurate collision detection method for the research of this field."

The in-situ retorting of shallow oil shale deposits is an attractive alternative to the material handling problems of conventional open pit mining techniques, which involve removing overburden, fragmenting and transporting the shale to a fixed retort, and finally disposing of the hot spent shale.For in-situ retorting to be successful, the oil shale has to be fractured and the fragmented rock expanded into a void, to allow controlled propagation of a flame front through the in-situ retort. The principles of cratering with explosives have been used to develop a process for the in-situ fracturing of a thin oil shale deposit overlain by a formation of porous rock. The overlying porous rock formation is first compressed by explosive charges to create voids in the porous rock. The oil shale is then fragmented and pushed in to the voids with separate explosive charges. This paper discusses methods of creating voids in porous rocks with minimal surface disturbance, and then methods of obtaining the most uniform fragmentation of the shale. The whole process can be completed, in practice, in one blast. The results of an experimental blast are presented, and possible modifications are then discussed.

Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulations require underground coal mine operators to dust their mine corridors with an inert material to prevent coal dust explosions. The most commonly used material is pulverized limestone. Current practice to determine compliance with MSHA regulations requires the coal mine foreman or an MSHA inspector to collect samples of the deposited dust, a mixture of coal dust and limestone rock dust, for above ground laboratory analysis. To expedite this process, the U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed two instruments to facilitate the inspection and rock dusting processes, the explosibility meter and float dust deposition meter. The explosibility meter is a hand-held instrument which provides an in situ measurement of the explosible nature of homogeneous mine dust samples. The float dust deposition meter measures the mass loading density of the top layer of coal or limestone dust deposited on the mine floor during mining operations by the ventilation air. It may also be used to automate trickle rock dusting equipment. The operation of each device is based on the difference in the optical reflectance between the light limestone dust and the dark coal dust. The principal of the explosibility meter is based on the observation that, for a fixed coal volatility, the optical reflectance of dust mixtures is relatively constant at the limit of flammability, and independent of the coal dust particle size.

VARIOUS suggestions as to proper fees for engineering services have been put forth by individual practitioners and by the American Institute of Consulting Engineers, the Connecticut Society of Civil Engineers, the Iowa Engineering Society and the Mahoning Valley (Ohio) Engineers, for the guidance of both the engineer and his client. The American Institute of Architects also has a schedule of minimum charges (revised 1908). So far as can be determined, however, the four national societies representing civil, mining, mechanical and electrical engineering have never given consideration to this question. An examination of technical periodicals published during the past decade shows that these schedules make provision for three methods of charging; i.e., (A) a percentage of the cost of the completed project; (B) a per diem rate; and (C) a fixed sum. This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of a diesel particulate filter (DPF) regeneration process on the concentrations and size distributions of aerosols in an underground mine. Two active regeneration strategies were examined for an electrically regenerated sintered metal fiber filtration system, and the effects were compared with those observed for a muffler and the same system operated in a passive configuration. The effects were assessed for three steady-state engine operating conditions. The number and mass concentrations and size distributions of aerosols in mine air were found to be strongly affected by the exhaust configuration, engine operating conditions and the regeneration process. When the system was operated in active configurations, the concentrations exhibited a transient and cyclic nature. At light load conditions, the distributions of aerosols in mine air were dominated by accumulation mode aerosols for all exhaust configurations and regeneration strategies. High concentrations of nucleation aerosols were observed when the DPF system was used and the engine was operated at high load conditions. A positive correlation between accumulation of particulate matter in the filter and the efficiency of the filter in removing accumulation mode aerosols was observed for all conditions. In the case of high engine load, reductions in accumulation mode aerosol concentrations were linked to a substantial increase in number concentrations of nucleation mode aerosol. Overall, the filtration system was found to be very effective in reducing total aerosol mass and elemental carbon concentrations for all engine operating conditions. However, the system was substantially more effective in passive than in active regeneration configurations.

THE Fremont test for measuring the energy consumed in breaking a notched bar of steel is not so well known in this country as it deserves to be. The test specimen used in this test is about 3/8 by 1/4 by about 1 1/4 in., notched with a hack saw on the lower side to cause the piece to break at a fixed point. A weight of 10 kg. falling 4 m., and provided with a knife or chisel which strikes the specimen, breaks the test piece by impact. The residual force in the falling weight after it has broken the specimen is recorded by a suitable device, and the difference between the total energy and the residual energy of the weight (in kilogrammeters) is the force consumed in breaking the specimen. An experience of several years with the Fremont testing machine has shown its great value in readily detecting brittleness not revealed by tensile testing or slow bending testing. I this paper it is proposed to discuss (1) the supersensitiveness of the test as applied to cast steel and (2) its value in revealing the effect of heat treatment under certain conditions. .
