When heated in the absence of oxygen, pyrite from refractory gold concentrates decomposes endothermically to pyrrhotite, releasing sulphur. The decomposition starts at the particle surface and progresses inwards, leaving an adhering layer of porous pyrrhotite. Use of the conventional shrinking-core model implicitly assumes a negligible partial pressure of sulphur in the bed, but this pressure is in fact at least equal to the equilibrium vapour pressure of sulphur over pyrite, constituting the principal control of the rate of decomposition. Further experiments showed a decrease in reaction rate as the conversion increased. Both phenomena are attributed to the persistence of non-isothermal conditions in the fluidised bed during pyrolysis, caused by the endothermic nature of the reaction and the relatively slow rates of heat transfer to particles and vapour removal from the bed. Materiais sustentáveis estão sendo investigados para substituir os materiais sintéticos, os compósitos com matriz polimérica têm sido aplicados em componentes, tais como capacetes e blindagem para os quais a resistência em um requisito importante. O presente trabalho avalia a classificação energética de impacto Charpy e Izod da matriz de epóxi compósitos DGEBA / TETA, reforçado com até 30% em volume de fibras de malva contínuas e alinhadas (Urena Lobata, L). Os testes de impacto foram realizados em amostras padronizadas em matriz de epoxi obtidas por aplicação de pressão em molde com cura a temperatura ambiente por 24 horas. Os resultados mostraram aumento significativo da energia de impacto com a fracção de fibras incorporadas de malva. A superfície de fratura foi analisada por microscopia eletrônica de varredura, SEM. O desempenho das amostras incorporados com 30% de fibras, sofreu apenas ruptura parcial devido a dificuldades impostas ao quebrar-se as fibras, e, consequentemente, a natureza dos quais fendas tendem a propagar na interface entre a matriz de fibra / resina epóxi, o que ajuda a absorver a energia do impacto.

O objetivo do trabalho foi estudar a possibilidade de ajustar as características do biogás produzido a partir da fermentação de vinhaça de modo a torná-lo intercambiável com o Gás Natural (GN), ou um GN substituto (GNS) com características que permitam introduzi-lo na rede de distribuição. São considerados aspectos normativos e técnicos associados à composição química e comportamento durante processo de combustão visando o atendimento aos requisitos normativos estabelecidos para o GN. O trabalho considera a vinhaça, rejeito da produção de etanol a partir da cana-de-açúcar, como fonte para produção do biogás em razão da grande disponibilidade deste resíduo do setor sucroalcooleiro. O Estado de São Paulo (ESP) é tratado com destaque, uma vez que este concentra a maior parte da produção do setor sucroalcooleiro no Brasil. Cálculos de razões de mistura tratada com gases de ajuste foram realizados para verificação das proporções necessárias que viabilizam a utilização da mistura como GNS, tendo como referência especificações da ANP. Os resultados do estudo indicam que a alternativa de geração e beneficiamento de biogás da vinhaça é uma opção tecnicamente viável de conversão de fração considerável deste resíduo do setor sucroalcooleiro em gás com características similares ao GN. Ademais, a alternativa proporciona a valoração do conteúdo orgânico do resíduo, com redução da contaminação dos solos no processo de reaproveitamento dos nutrientes nos processos de fertirrigação.

In the United States, about one-quarter of the fuel oil and natural gas consumption is associated with power production in utility and industrial boilers and process heat needs in industrial furnaces. Coal has been an attractive candidate for replacement of these premium fuels because of its low cost, but there are penalties associated with the solid fuel form. In many cases pulverized coal is unacceptable as a premium fuel replacement because of the extensive cost of retrofitting an existing boiler designed to burn oil or gas. In the cases of synthetic fuels from coal, research and development still has a long way to go and the costs of research and development are very high. Another option which appears very attractive is the use of solid coal in a liquid fuel form, coal slurry fuels. Occidental Research Corporation (ORC) has been developing coal slurry fuels in conjunction with Island Creek Coal (ICC,) Occidental Petroleum's wholly-owned subsidiary. Both Coal-Oil Mixtures and Coal -Water Mixtures are under development. ICC is a large eastern coal producer, engaged in the production and marketing of bituminous coal, both utility steam and high quality/low volatile metallurgical coals. A sister division, Sheridan Enterprises is engaged in the development of western coals.

First, permit me to say with what very great pleasure we find ourselves assembled in this most ancient and honourable city of Quebec. It is a city which we deeply respect as the fountain-head of the culture of French-speaking fellow citizens, and the seat of government of a province which is steadily recording new achievements in Canadian mining. Such achievements prove what can be accomplished when enlightened and progressive government policy, technical and scientific competence, and private initiative pull forward together in harmonious rhythm. It is a most happy and auspicious event also that the guiding control of the affairs of the Institute and of the fine traditions of provincial administration have for the past year been united in the person of our honoured President, Dr. A. O. Dufresne. This year, again, we have bad prepared for us by our hosts a splendid programme of technical sessions and social entertainment. Each year we pay an unspoken compliment to the Institute, expecting as a matter of course nothing but the highest standards in both these spheres. In its annua1, semi-annual, and regional meetings, in the constant activity of its local Branches, the Institute continues with marked success to perform its great dual service, social and educational. We are all its beneficiaries to the extent to which we choose to profit by participation in its affairs. But, one imagines, to none are the advantages of Institute membership more valuable than to young men embarking on their professional careers.

In 1958, the Iron Ore Company of Canada decided to proceed with the Carol Project. The ore deposits in the area are part of the highly metamorphosed southern zone of the Labrador Trough. They lie along the shore of W a bush lake, in the western part of Newfoundland-Labrador, 190 miles north of Sept-Iles. The project is designed to mine, by open-pit methods, 17,200,000 long tons of crude ore, grading 37 per cent iron, per year. This ore will be beneficiated to produce 7,000,000 long tons of concentrate, grading 66 per cent iron, of which 5,500,000 long tons will be pelletized. Production is scheduled to commence this summer. Initially, ore will be taken from 45-foot benches in the Smallwood mine, using jet-piercing production drills and large-scale blasting with "slurry" explosives. Four 13-yard electric shovels will muck the broken ore into 100-ton trailer trucks. The trailers will be hauled to two 2,000-ton loading pockets, which feed the ore into 100-ton railcars. THIRTY years ago, when I stood on the cliff of red fossil iron-ore, on Red mountain, Jefferson county, Ala., I asked what were the geological relations of this remarkable deposit. In reply I was told that it was a limestone colored and saturated by some unknown but wholly external influences, and that at a reasonable distance from the surface the color would disappear. I could find no satisfactory explanation either of the nature of this wonderful external permeating influence, or of the cause of such a ferrous impregnation selecting this one particular bed of limestone, to the exclusion of the higher and lower beds of the same material which are not even stained. I. THE PRESENT THEORY. Referring to this subject, Dana says:' "The clays, clayey sandstones and limestones of the Clinton epoch, through New York and the Appalachians, show that the mud-flats and sand-banks, and hence the shallow seas of the coast region, still continued. . . The beds of argillaceous iron-ore, which spread so widely through New York and some of the other States, south and west, could not have formed in an open sea, for clayey iron-deposits do not form under such circumstances. They are proof of extensive marshes, and, therefore, of land near the sea-level. The fragments of crinoids and shells found in these beds are evidence that they were, in part at least, salt-water marshes, and that the tides sometimes reached them." "INTRODUCTION The strategic importance of zinc warranted investigation of the Silver Eagle zinc prospect, which was first examined by an engineer 3/ of the Bureau of Mines in January 1943.From October 12, 1943, to March 16, 1944, the Bureau explored the deposit by trenching, core drilling, and sampling to establish the amount and grade of ore and to test for the presence of sulfide-ore minerals at depth.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. The influence of different waste materials in sinter blends on the quality and mineralogical composition of a sinter is described. As a result of partial preservation of the original textures of waste materials in the final product the degree of assimilation of the original material in the sinter product can be ascertained. Recycling of waste materials such as dolo char , arc-furnace slag, scrap fmes, mill scale and BOF-mud via the sintering process a saving on costs of raw materials such as flux and fuels, and a reduction on pollution can be achieved. A comparison of a typical sinter with a sinter produced through the utilization of waste materials showed a distinct correlation between certain types of waste material and some metallurgical properties. Dolochar in a sinter blend acts as part of the fuel and flux that are normally added to a sinter mix. Generally dolochar improves the quality of the sinter and decreases the consumption of coke. Other waste materials adversely influence the quality of the sinter. The glass and calcium ferrite content of a sinter when dolochar is used in the blend is similar to that of a sinter produced with only coke as a fuel in the sinter mix. The glass content is lower and the calcium ferrite content is higher, in a sinter produced from dolo char in the blend compared to a sinter produced with additions of other waste materials. Changes in the mineralogical composition are related directly to the metallurgical properties of the sinter product.

Many contributors have added to the fund of knowledge in the basic sciences related to mineral dressing during the past year. During 1964, the French edition of the Proceedings of the VIth International Mineral Processing Congress together with discussions was printed. Also, complete Preprints of papers delivered at the VIIth IMPC were published in September1. Over a third of the papers presented at VIIth IMPC dealt with fundamentals. COMMINUTION It has been postulated by Ponceleta that flaws need not exist before a stress is applied but rather the flaws are created at the tip of a propagating crack at a stress well below the theoretical breaking stress.

IN the third year of war, geophysical oil exploration broke all records to keep pace with the demand for increased reserves. Geophysical prospecting for strategic and other minerals also grew in scope. The trend of geophysical oil exploration throughout the war is indicated in Fig. 1. This figure resembles the one presented in the last annual review issue of M&M (February 1944, p. 62), corrected for data on-operations in the last months of 1943 and extended into 1944. The average number of geophysical oil prospecting crews in the field in 1944 was 451, whereas the total in 1943 was 340. An upward trend in the use of all geophysical methods is clearly evident throughout the year. Seismic operations were 67 per cent, gravimeter surveys 28 per cent, and other methods 5 per cent of the total. Seismic reflection and refraction crews increased 181/2 per cent over the 1943 average, gravimeter operations increased 73 per cent, and other methods gained 92 per cent. The increase in seismic and gravimeter operations, particularly the latter, is probably due to an increased production of equipment and the organization of new service companies. Miscellaneous methods gained largely through a revival of magnetometer work, and an increase in the use of torsion balances and electrical equipment. In comparison with the prewar average of 1941, it is noteworthy that seismic operations increased 58 per cent, gravimeter operations 88 per cent, and miscellaneous other methods gained as much as 283 per cent. Unfortunately the expansion in the number of geophysical crews does not indicate a proportionate increase in efficiency or in areal coverage, as will be brought out later.

The yield strength of annealed tungsten was found to have a strain rate exponent 12 times as great as that of low carbon steel. The effects of temperature and strain rate could be correlated through the Zener-Hollomon parameter with a heat of activation associated with yielding of 32,000 cal per g-atom. This heat of activation is independent of strain although both the temperature and strain rate dependence of the yield strength vary with strain. MOST metals have mechanical properties that are relatively insensitive to strain rate, especially at temperatures below that at which creep is important. In iron and molybdenum," however, relatively large strain rate effects are observed in the temperature range where the rapid increase in yield strength occurs which leads to the ductile to brittle transition. In this temperature range Zener and Hollomon' have suggested that the effects of strain rate and temperature T on the yield strength could be correlated through a single parameter, P, in the following manner where Q is a heat of activation characteristic of the metal and associated with some unspecified relaxation process. They also observed that if the temperature is restricted to a relatively narrow range— below room temperature for steel—that the logarithm of the yield strength could be expressed as a linear function of the logarithm of P. From this relation the logarithm of stress should be a linear function of the logarithm of the strain rate at constant temperature: where r will be referred to herein as the strain rate exponent. At a constant strain rate the logarithm of stress should be a linear function of l/T, ay(e = C) ~ eT [4] where q = Qr [5] and is referred to herein as the temperature exponent. These equations have been found to relate the effects of temperature and strain rate on the yield strength of molybdenum in the temperature range wherein the ductile to brittle transition occurs, —75° to +150°C.2 Bechtold and Shewmon3 have shown recently that the ductile to brittle transition in annealed tungsten occurs in the temperature range +150° to +350°C. The Bureau of Mines investigated processes for recovering a marketable lithium product from the montmorillonite-type clays of the McDermitt caldera. The clay deposit, located on the Nevada-Oregon border, is estimated to contain over 3 million short tons of lithium. Limestone-gypsum roasting and selective chlorination proved most successful for extracting lithium from the clays; 80-pct Li recovery was achieved using either technique. With both processes, lithium silicate in the clay was converted to a water-soluble compound-either lithium sulfate or lithium chloride. The lithium was then recovered as a carbonate by water leaching the calcine, concentrating the leach solution by evaporation, and precipitating the lithium with soda ash. The operating costs for the limestone-gypsum roast process were estimated at $2.02/lb Li2C03; selective chlorination operating costs were estimated at $3.85/1b Li2C03. The current selling price of Li2C03 is about $1.50/lb. A detailed flowsheet, material balance, and process evaluation are presented for the limestone-gypsum roast process. In addition, lithium reserves and resources are discussed and the McDermitt clays are described.

I truly free enterprise system requires free and unrestricted competition among a diversity of suppliers, in order to function properly. The natural attrition of the marketplace tends on the one hand to narrow the competitive field ... but the flow of new competitors entering the arena provides a "diluting" effect, and a "balanced" market place. Without the ready flow of new business entrants, the market becomes increasingly concentrated in the hands of fewer and. fewer firms. Competition among suppliers is diminished and the "free" marketplace suffers accordingly. A number of organizations, both governmental and private, have recently expressed grave con¬cern over the competitive future of the Western coal market. While most have noted that there is currently adequate competition within the Western market, some have cited the growing con¬centration of coal ownership ... particularly federal lease ownership ... in the hands of a relatively few firms. They suggest that unless this apparent trend is reversed or at least stemmed, the number of new firms entering the federally-dominated West may become reduced to the point where competition will suffer.

A busca por materiais que atendam as demandas ambientais que vem surgindo com o passar dos anos abre um importante mercado para a aplicação de fibras naturais. Além de biodegradáveis e provenientes de fontes renováveis, as fibras naturais possibilitam a produção de materiais compósitos de baixa densidade e com boas propriedades mecânicas. Para aumentar ainda mais essas propriedades, estuda-se o uso de tecidos de fibra natural em vez das fibras alinhas. As principais vantagens desta nova configuração são o reforço em mais de uma direção ao mesmo tempo e o fato de serem mais compactos, viabilizando a incorporação de uma fração maior de material de reforço. O presente trabalho investigou a resistência ao impacto de compósitos de matriz poliéster reforçados com tecido puro de rami, que é uma das fibras lignocellusosicas mais resistentes encontradas até hoje. Os corpos de prova foram reforçados com 1, 2 e 3 camadas de tecido e foram ensaiados num pêndulo de impacto Izod. Concluiu-se com base nos resultados que o aumento da fração volumétrica de tecido aumenta a resistência ao impacto dos compósitos.

Two degasification test boreholes were drilled to depths of 1,238 and 1,212 feet on Bureau of Mines property at Bruceton, Pa., as part of the Bureau's long-range coal degasification program. The holes provided detailed geologic information and geologic sections, which were correlated with regional stratigraphic cross sections prepared by the Pennsylvania Geological Survey. Gas content determinations and coal analyses were made on the Upper Freeport, Middle Kittanning, Clarion, Brookville, and Mercer coalbeds; gas content of the coalbeds ranged from 53 to 165 cubic feet per ton. Formation pressure and gas flow tests were conducted on selected coalbed intervals in borehole 1; formation pressures ranged from 292 to 473 psig. The middle Kittanning coalbed was hydraulically stimulated using very heavy gelled water, but gas production remained low because gel residue and formation water inhibited the flow of gas. Gas contents in the Clarion, Upper Brookville, and Mercer coalbeds were anomalously low owing to the proximity of porous sand-stones which act as reservoirs for gas migrating from coalbeds.

Hard rock mining has grown in importance in the Yukon Territory during the last 10 years while Alaskan hard rock mining has declined. One asbestos deposit in Alaska is dormant, but an asbestos deposit 55 miles to the east in the Yukon Territory is being mined by the Clinton Mine Div., Cassiar Asbestos Corp., Ltd. In this Bureau of Mines report, the economics of mining in the two locations were derived using the Clinton mine as a model. Both deposits were assumed to be of equal size and mined by similar methods. Conventional open pit mining and processing methods were assumed, and capital and operating costs were derived using flowsheets and standard costing methods. The estimated cost for the mine, mill, and support facilities in Alaska was about 30 percent more expensive than that in the Yukon Territory. The higher labor rates in Alaska were the primary contributor to the higher construction costs; freight rates added only slightly to the total costs. Approximately two-thirds of the additional annual costs of operating in Alaska were for wages and fringe benefits. The price required for the Alaskan asbestos fiber was $356.65 per ton compared with $287.44 for Yukon fiber, plus or minus 20 percent. A 12 percent discounted cash flow rate of return, 100 percent equity financing, and a rapid writeoff of assets were assumed.

A four-year study was carried out to determine the ability of coniferous trees to aid in the reclamation of uranium tailings at Elliot Lake. Five species were planted: white cedar, white spruce, jack pine, scotch pine and red pine. More than 570 bare-root, two-year-old seedlings were planted on bare tailings and in areas of established grasses. A further division was made between areas of coarse and fine tailings. Over-all survival and growth of the trees has been far below expectations based on previous experience with several varieties of grasses. The criteria for assessment have been per cent survival and yearly growth as determined by plant height. Pine was superior, with 68% survival when planted in bare coarse tailings, 45% for vegetated coarse tailings and 34% for vegetated fine tailings. Cedar had the worst survival rates at 49%, 14% and 7% respectively. No species survived on bare fine tailings. The survival and growth of the coniferous trees have been related to species, environmental conditions and tailings properties.

BEGINNING in December, 1933, and continuing to the close of April, 1934, large sums of money were expended in the states of Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia through the conduct of Federal and State Civil Works Administration, financed by the Government as a part of the President's recovery program to furnish employment to mine employees idle as a result of the economic depression. PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT The protection of the public health against the pollution of public water supply by acid mine drainage was the incentive that prompted the request that the sealing of abandoned bituminous coal mines be made a Federal project. A paper before the Central Section of the American Water Works Association, Wheeling, W. Va., on Aug. 24, by E. S. Tisdale, Chief Engineer of the West Virginia Department of Health, tersely says: In October, 1933, the combined experience of the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the U. S. Public Health Service and the States of Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky resulted in a report being filed in Washington, first with the Public Works Administration and later with the Civil Works Administration, where it was favorably acted upon, calling for these governmental agencies under the direction of the U. S. Public Health Service to expend $1,500,000 in a unified effort to seal abandoned coal mines in Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky and six other states farther down along the Ohio river. The report referred to was embodied in a petition that was signed by the chief engineers of the State Departments of Health of the several states contiguous to the drainage area of the Ohio River. The project as established under Federal supervision became interstate with respect to the several states involved, and upon the termination of the Federal project on Feb. 15, it was authorized as a State C.W.A. project, effective Feb. 20, under the supervision of the State Departments of Health and the State C.W.A. Administration, which continued to March 29, and was succeeded by the S.E.R.B. of the R.W.D. from April 2 to April

Os resíduos provenientes das indústrias cerâmicas demandam locais apropriados de descarte, gerando gastos, desperdício de matérias-primas e, quando o local de descarte é impróprio, problemas ambientais. Sendo assim, se faz necessário o estudo da reutilização destes resíduos, tanto para fins econômicos quanto ambientais. Dessa forma, a reutilização de chamote, resíduo oriundo do descarte de materiais cerâmicos, é possível através da sua incorporação em massas cerâmicas para a produção de novos materiais (blocos, tijolos, telhas, etc). O presente trabalho teve como objetivo analisar a influência do chamote em massas cerâmicas, comparando dosagens com substituição de 10%, 20% e 30% em massa com um traço de referência. Para isso foram realizados ensaios, com os quais pode-se obter as propriedades relacionadas a retração por secagem e por queima, absorção de água, perda ao fogo, porosidade aparente e tensão de ruptura à flexão. Em suma, pode-se concluir que o uso do chamote permite a obtenção de materiais com boa resistência mecânica, moderada absorção de água e com boas propriedades dimensionais, demonstrando ser uma alternativa ambientalmente amigável e economicamente viável.
